Nascido em 14 de outubro de 1794, Robert continuou a sua atividade empresarial na sua cidade Natal. Iniciou-se na loja do seu pai , onde , na condição de aprendiz , aprendeu as várias técnicas de impressão. O seu irmão conseguiu o Devonshire Chronicle como um jornal de West Country liberal, e pelos vários feitos dos irmãos temos a noção que nas suas vidas,a impressão e a política liberal estaram sempre ligadas na sua carreira. Em 1820, Besley ingressa na empresa dos Srs. Thoregood , fundadores de tipos, com sede em Fann Street, onde mais tarde ele próprio se tornou-se chefe . Entre outros cargos, foi também Presidente do Scarborough e Whitby Railway Company e Presidente do cais do Griffin. Em 1864 torna-se era xerife e em 1869, Lord Mayor. Relativamente ao tipo de letra que criou, o tipo de letra Clarendon foi posteriormente utilizado pelo governo do Império Alemão para proclamações durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, e também era comum em cartazes do Velho Oeste americano. Atualmente pode também ser visto no logotipo de empresas como a Sony.

CLARENDON
J J Criada por Robert Besley, a fonte Clarendon tornou-se tão popular que a sua patente, após ter expirado em três anos, foi copiada por outras fundições. Os estudos de Besley para a criação deste tipo, foram desenvolvidos com DeVinne e Cheltenham e incidiam sobretudo no conceito de uma família de tipos com diferentes pesos. Assim, mesmo a versão regular da clarendon apresenta um aspeto algo aproximado ao efeito bold, o que se torna muito útil na enfatização de textos. Daí ser usual vermos o tipo Clarendon em anúncios , folhetos , cabeçalhos ou texto muito curtos. Sobre este tipo de letra sabe-se ainda que foi reformulado pela fundição Monotype em 1935, por Hermann Eidenbenz em 1953. O seu trabalhonrelativamente a este tipo resume-se um pouco a correção de pesos mal distribuídos, serifas em forma de laje ou mesmo correções nos terminais e braços de algumas letras Ele tem pesado, serifas laje e terminais bola nos braços de algumas letras.
