<MOON> by Kim, Kisoo : NO REAL NO LIKE

Okreal Kim Director of Contemporary Art Institute (CAIKOR )

Artist Kim, Ki soo who works with stainless steel, gives formativeness and malerisch attributes to the properties of materials. His new artworks for this exhibition in Art Space Purl are reconstructed in order to show his visual vision which is the boundary between virtual and real in the method that shapes the longing and nostalgia that he felt in the moon reflected in the water. It is the way to separate reality and image between the boundaries that fall into the horizontal and longitudinal spaces that cut and connect between daily life and non-daily and between the moment which is in the middle of the seeing and the seen through the sides of his sculptures that are separated and combined to the small sides and big sides.

In the moment we look at Kim Ki-sooโ€™s <MOON>, like illusions, the projected image, the rusty iron and the sharply divided line among the transparent appearances, the transformation of the shape split into the face, and the various movements that are constantly changed appear and disappear. It is one or multi after images like a childhood nostalgia or longing. In this show, Kim Ki-sooโ€™s <MOON>, produced by remnants of memories located deep in his mind, makes me focus to two approaches of more exquisitely displayed surface. Although his artwork still starts from the nostalgic moon reflected in the lake, the unique difference is that with the delicate touch Kim contains his aesthetic sense reflecting the reality beyond the optical illusion which is never changed even on the surface of swaying lake. For example, in the previous <MOON> series, he expressed his interpretation about the material property of stainless steel as the water surface which is usually embodied as hammered surfaces or wrapped with white cloth. This was the way he indicated that his artistic perspective that involved in the boundary of the optical illusion took the aspects between visible and invisible as the way to paint and the painting subject itself.

<No Real No Like> is the concept to determine the point of the boundaries between reality and illusion or the premise regarding the reality that is projected on a combination of elaborate triangular planes by laser cutting in order to explain the natural choppy wavelength on a still water surface. The reality in sophisticated sculptures is a combination of the moving faces that have split and transformed to the optical illusion and his artworks can be the place to rebirth a space that is cut with sharp angled faces and the distance between the image and the reality as a psychological or spiritual space. In addition, in the way of composition that cuts and splices images like broken glass due to the weight of space and stone, natural formative formality and artificial form are intersected. The reality and the image, and the variations of artificial and natural echo are at the boundary where the preconceptions are disappeared and appeared. In this process, we can see that the resonance of immobility reestablishes or reproduces the relationship between reality and image. In his show, โ€˜No Real No Likeโ€™, re-establishment of the illusion eliminates illusion and, at the same time, fragmentizes the illusion through the newly overlapped and floating change. The power of a small transition in the continuity of his previous works still derives from the memory of the moon that Kim has seen while he was in military service. Stainless steel, the main material of Kim Ki soo, reminds us of the moon on the surface of the water or running river. This occurs when Stainless steel reflects reality like mirror does. Likewise as calm lack embraces the bright full moon, <MOON> series by Kim Ki soo envelopes the gaze before his artworks.

The <MOON> series, which is newly approached through this exhibition, focuses on the method in which the objectivity of the image reflected on the fragments of elaborate triangles is newly shaped. It is at the boundary of the deconstruction that individualizes the whole (multi perspective) into the parts (one perspective). It presents the three-dimensional sculptural perspective on the two-dimensional plane, as if Cubist pursued the Cubistic time and space by dividing analytic time and space. This aspect that breaks one perspective illusion is the new place intersecting a part and the whole and the subject and the object. In the viewpoint of multiplying the perspective about the presence of time and space and dividing illusion projecting Dasein into sophisticatedly combined triangle, I cannot but look forward with the keenest anticipation to his future artworks. The swaying reality in it is the place of NO REAL NO LIKE. It is the aesthetic sense of Kim Ki soo that conveys his own sense of existence that pursues the answer to the question regarding the formality that contains the reality that can be encountered as he has followed his journey of producing artworks. It is time to meet myself in the third place, where Kim Ki soo puts his sincerity.

27

By reconstructing the fragmented forms of the solid steel, the concept of this exhibition, โ€œNo Real No Likeโ€, clearly provides the boundary between reality and unreality. For instance, through the elaborate pieces of a triangle, the illusion of the mirror image and the material effect of projecting the objects are diversified. The novelty of the <MOON> series in 2017 is at the very boundary to strip off the optical illusion. It is the part that makes the distance regarding the relation between the images that the artistโ€™s perspectives are reflected and the reality, or combines the multi-view cube that has visual diversity because of the transparency property from the material Kim has been used with the elaborate triangles. Just as there is no resemblance without reality, he presents a methodical change that exists between visualizes the variability of space, reality and illusion, and fixation and fluidity.
