Ten Years! I still need to pinch myself to make sure it’s really happening. It feels as if it was yesterday when in March 2013 we launched the inaugural edition of what today is a handsome magazine we can be proud of.

I am humbled to have been representing some of the most prestigious brands and professional offices in Houston and The Woodlands for many years now, while at the same time, I’m proud to have the trajectory that was brought us from a small Spanish magazine in 2013 to the luxurious and entertaining publication it is today. I’d like to share my testimony with you and “How It All Started”, on page 35.

This 10-Year Special Anniversary issue is somewhat different from previous ones. This time around we decided to go quite visual, with a 14-page section including highlights of our photography from 2014, and a beautiful 24-page spread we just photographed in River Oaks.

Teaming up with renowned luxury architect and interior designer Carlos Castroparedes, we assembled a section summarizing the evolution of Houston and The Woodlands during our ten-year history, starting on page 42.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

I will never forget when in March 2013 we published our first issue of LUXCIOR, back then named “Houston Latina”, originally a Spanish magazine.

As I was driving along I-45, I decided to stop by IndiGO Auto Group -Lamborghini Houston and Porsche of North Houston-, where I handed a copy of the magazine to the receptionist and asked her to please pass it on to her manager. I never expected her to actually stand up and walk to the back, magazine in hand, to a few minutes later come back to tell me: “They want to see you”. “Who are they”? -I wondered-, but I went with the flow and followed her back to an office where I was greeted by Todd Blue -founder and then CEO of IndiGO Auto Group- who was in the middle of a meeting with then-General Manager Kelly Wolf (Mr. Wolf today is the CEO and Dealer Principal of indiGO Auto Group, overseeing the company’s 20 luxury dealerships, which include Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, VW, Bentley, McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW, Aston Martin, and Ferrari in California, Texas, and Missouri.

I couldn’t believe Todd and Kelly interrupted their meeting to invite me in. As I sat down, I distinctly remember as if it was yesterday, when Mr. Blue went on to tell me while going through the magazine: “What you are doing is very smart. A luxury magazine for Latinos, what a great idea” . Then he went on to explain that one out of three cars he was selling for both Lamborghini and Porsche -the only two brands IndiGO had in Houston at the time-, was purchased by Hispanics, 80% of whom lived in The Woodlands (remember, this was 10 years ago). We shook hands and Lamborghini and Porsche became my very first luxury clients. Later IndiGO added McLaren and Rolls-Royce to their list of high-end brands, to become Houston’s #1 ultra-luxury automobile campus, and also brands we proudly continue to represent.

Later on, I decided to change the name Houston Latinos to LUXCIOR (what a great move!). As time went by I noticed everyone was trying to get their hands on LUXCIOR (our covers are the ones to blame), but because it was in Spanish I was missing out on a great proportion of Houston’s population. So I gradually went from Spanish to bilingual, and from bilingual to English, as it is today. After all, most Latinos from our following are bilingual anyway, so we didn’t actually lose any audience. On the contrary, we gained tenfold from all other segments.

Another great story I can’t forget was with ACPS - Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery-. I tried for a straight year to gain their business. I met with them at least three times, but the answer kept on being a big “No”. In mid-2014 -at the completion of our first year- I got a call from Jeremy Hartling, to this day their Chief Development Officer, who told me, and I quote as I will never forget: “We have been following your magazine, and we really like what you are doing. Our clients love it. So we decided to come on board. Is your back cover available?” Nine years later, they are not only still our back cover but also great friends. And I must say the same about Richard Vander Dys, owner of Vander Dys Fine Jewelers in The Woodlands, someone I admire for his extraordinary knowledge, passion for the world of fine jewelry, and integrity. Over the years we became close friends. Lastly, from those early days, I must recognize Gianfranco Percovich, founder of Sal y Pimienta, my client and friend since he started with iconic Tango & Malbec on Sage Rd. in Galleria, as you probably remember.

I won’t get into listing all the great businesses we had the privilege to represent, as I don’t want to leave anyone out, but it has been a wonderful experience, even through the usual challenges of any growing enterprise.

I am grateful to all of those businesses, whether they are still our clients or not, and I pray that God may continue to bless and prosper them all.

I must also recognize our team, in Houston, and from other states and abroad. I always believed that success in any enterprise can only happen when you surround yourself with the right people. Not one single person can achieve much without the right people. So I must start with Manuel Reuter, who from the very first year helped me make LUXCIOR a success, and still to this day continues to contribute. Carlos Castroparedes, an extraordinary architect and interior designer, cultural contributor, and friend. Richard Vander Dys, a dear friend and great supporter. And of course, lastly but always first and foremost, to our awesome God, for his direction and never-ending goodness.

Today, after ten straight years of publishing in Houston, the most amazing city in the nation, and having seen all of “The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly (like Harvey, Covid, Santa Fe, etc.), I still feel like singing “like it’s 1999”!

The Greater Houston metropolitan area -which includes The Woodlands up to Conroe- embodies luxury and prosperity. Half of these spectacular treasures come from the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

Since 2012, Houston has seen tremendous growth in its luxury sector with the opening of many developments that cater to affluent individuals. There is a clear trend towards mixed-use developments, which combine residential, commercial, and retail spaces in one convenient location.

One of the most notable is the River Oaks District, which since its opening in 2015 has brought to Houston the pleasures of an ultra-luxury shopping experience comparable to Rodeo Drive, by offering top names in fashion such as Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes, Harry Windston, Cartier, Dior, Van Cleef & Arpels, Rolex, Patek Philippe at De Boulle, Alice + Olivia, Zimmermann, Moreau, Canali, Assouline, and Vince, to name a few.

And when it comes to some of the finest cuisine and sweets, it’s worth mentioning Steak 48, MAD, Café Toulouse, Le Colonial, Loch Bar, Ouzo Bay, Bisou, Little Hen, The Tuck Room, Amorino, and the most recent addition almost ready to open, Bari Italian Restaurant. These in addition to the Grey House Apartments, office spaces, Epic -Houston’s most luxurious movie theatre experience-, and Equinox, a high-end fitness center.

The Heights, a historic neighborhood in Houston, has also seen a recent surge in development as well. New luxury apartment buildings like The Driscoll at River Oaks and The Susanne offer upscale amenities like rooftop lounges and resort-style swimming pools. There is much to be said about sports in Houston, starting with the two World Series dominated by Houston-pride Astros in 2017 and 2022, to the purchase of the Rockets by Tilman Fertitta in 2017, and many things in between over the course of the last ten years.

One of the most significant has to do with the sport that is taking over America and Houston: Soccer. This sport, by far the most popular in the world, is also becoming the most popular in the country and our city, equally played by people of all ages, all races, and genders.

This boom in the US and particularly Houston over the last decade has led to next year’s Copa America 2024, the most important tournament that in-

cludes most countries from North, Central, and South America, to be held in the US from June 14 through July 13, 2024, with some of the matches to be played at NRG. Argentina will be defending the current title.

In addition to this event, and certainly much more important, the 2026 FIFA World Cup -the 23rd quadrennial international tournament of the men’s soccer championship contested by the national teams from 48 countries (16 more than the 32 nations that played in Qatar 2022)- will be -for the first time- jointly hosted by 16 cities in three North American countries: Canada, Mexico, and the United States, thus named “The United 2026”.

Argentina is also the actual world champion after defeating France in 2022.

There will be a total of 80 matches in this tournament, out of which Canada and Mexico will host 10 each, leaving the remaining 60 matches to the United States, including every match from the quarterfinals onward.

The 16 host cities selected by FIFA, include 2 cities in Canada, 3 in Mexico, and 11 in the United States. Houston is one of them, as part of the Central Division. Only four venues (Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Vancouver) are indoor stadiums that use retractable roof systems and are equipped with climate control. This represents a significant advantage to prevent any unexpected weather conditions.

Houston’s NRG Stadium -home of The Texans-, will host at least five or six matches over a 35-day period, which could very well include semi-finals and even the World Final. During these weeks Houston will experience a flood of people and most industries will see a surge as they have never experienced before.

In addition to the gigantic influx of cash into our economy during the games, most industries will start capitalizing months and years in advance. This year and in 2024 we will start seeing a growing number of new developments and infrastructure, and existing businesses expanding their capacity, creating thousands of jobs across multiple industries.

Houston is going to experience a new phase in its already fast growth to accommodate the impact of 2026, and beyond. We are entering a new and exciting chapter in the history of our city.

Another sport that has gained extraordinary traction through the last decade is the equestrian discipline. For many years the Polo season in Houston has been recognized as being one of the most important in the USA. And a new era has been developing in this arena.

Houston has a magnificent Polo Club in the Uptown area, while right now there is a new big development taking place in the Brookshire area with the expectation to turn it into a world-class campus for this sport and other equestrian disciplines.

The Sendera Equestrian States is developing new state-of-the-art facilities with the most beautiful and professional Polo courts and equestrian stables.

Rafael Chávez Monzón, founder of Haras Dos Cavaleiros, brought Houston to an entirely new level in equestrian sports, through the European discipline known as “Working equitation”, performed by the extraordinary Lusitano horses -originally from Portugal. This very high-end sport is hosted at luxurious Haras Hacienda in Magnolia, also property of Mr. Chavez Monzon, where the best horses from around the nation and the world gather to compete through a series of practices and tournaments all year round. The Ultimate Haras Cup Grand Prix takes place October 13th through 15th.

Fédération Equestre Internationale enters the Houston equestrian sports scene

This year, a remarkable new addition was brought to Houston by Haras Dos Cavaleiros: Fédération Equestre Internationale’s (FEI.org) Jumper Horse Competition. The International Federation for Equestrian Sports is the international governing body of equestrian sports. The FEI headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will be performing for the first time in our city an international Jumper Horse Competition, the weekend of May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) through the 7th.

Traditions are meant to remain unmolested

Uruguayan cuisine is internationally valued for the extreme quality of its 100% organic meats. This means grass-fed cattle, no use of antibiotics or hormones in the cows, and no fertilizers or pesticides on the grass. This is not optional, it’s the law. That’s why while other countries were banned from exporting their meats into the US, Uruguayan beef was ranked in the top two. Furthermore, Uruguayan beef always comes up in the top ten in the world, no matter what kind of criteria you use to do your research.

Why is this relevant to us? Because as far as we know, the only restaurant in Houston that specializes in Uruguayan beef is Sal y Pimienta, in City Centre, founded, as you probably guessed, by Houston’s indisputable number one Uruguayan restauranteur, Gianfranco Percovich.

Although Sal y Pimienta has gained a solid reputation over the last nine years among meat lovers, this restaurant is also known for its pasta, “ceviche”, desserts, and wines.

Although the tradition dating from almost a decade ago remains intact, Gianfranco won’t stop traveling to South America in search of the next elevated experience for his patrons. So every so often you can expect to find new dishes on the menu that add to the popular ones that no one would dare to touch.

However, this time around, rather than bringing a new idea or recipe, he brought an entire “Juan José Etchevarne”, one of the most awarded chefs in the South American country. For two weeks he will be testing his unique dishes in Houston, and training the already expert house chefs on new techniques and flavors for main courses and even desserts. To our fascination, we had the opportunity to taste some of them: definitely another level.

As a good Uruguayan, wine is a mandatory part of any meal. Family and friends’ gatherings cannot be conceived without it. At the same time Chef Juan José arrived in Houston, so did both Pizzorno brothers, owners with their parents of the award-winning label that bears the family name, now in its fourth generation, from the Canelones Region. So here is another tradition that gets deeply rooted as a fundamental part of any Sal y Pimienta memorable dining experience. So on your next visit, you’ll know what to order.

And if you still haven’t experienced S&P, beware, you may get addicted.

As a jeweller of eyewear, Cartier applies the same procedures as with its jewellery pieces. Its craftsman-like approach places the material at the heart of the creative process. Acetate, a cellulose-based material, is worked at Cartier in the same way as wood, horn or gold.

LACQUER

A delicate craft process, lacquering consists of depositing the lacquer by hand with a brush or a syringe into a recesses hollowed from the metal. Lacquered piece is then over-dried for three hours. Then lacquerer goes on to grind and polish the piece, before diamond-polishing it, until the lacquerer is truly levelled. This jewellery skill is used in the production of the panther head in the ‘Panthere Wild de Cartier’ frame where each of the animal’s spots is crafted from black lacquer made flush with the metal.

CARTIER WOOD

Among the pioneers in the use of wood in eyewear, Cartier began using this material in 1992. Noble, it requires many skilled interventions such as cutting, polishing, machining and finally varnishing, which gives it a shiny appearance and protects the surface. Each temple consists of 12 thin layers of wood glued and pressed together in a process called lamination used by Cartier to maximize the strength of each frame.

HORN

It can measure up to a meter but only a very small part of the horn meets Cartier’s criteria in terms of quality and aesthetics. The construction of thin strips layered crosswise ensures quality, resistance to warping and the stability of each frame.

SOLID GOLD

Cartier has an independent workshop in the Manufacture where work with precious metal in carried out. All Cartier solid gold frames are 18 carats. Cartier uses 3 tones of gold, worked with extreme thinness and delicacy.

HOUSTON City of Immigrants

For the past two years, Luxcior, one of my favorite magazines, has given me a platform to discuss the latest updates on immigration law.

Previously, I have discussed various visa options for non-immigrants, options for family reunification, information on DACA, TPS, and Asylum, and I have also provided insight on the most current border issues. I often mention the flaws with our immigration system and the hope for a comprehensive immigration reform that will aid millions of deserving immigrants who contribute to our country every day. This time, however, I want to write about something different. I want to write about our great city of Houston and the immigrants that call this city home.

Houston has become my own home away from home for two decades now. As an immigrant, born and raised in Albania, I have found our city to be welcoming of immigrants and a city that offers wonderful opportunities for those eager to seek them. It has been a privilege to be an immigration attorney in Houston, helping other immigrants, like me, reach their American dream.

It is not surprising that Houston is an immigrant-friendly city. Houston has a wonderful history of embracing immigrants from the very beginning. Between the years 1865 and 1924, it became our very own Southern Ellis Island with the Port of Houston welcoming over 200,000 immigrants, mostly from Europe. Today, the number of immigrants has grown and according to the most recent U.S. Census data, more than 25% of Houston residents are immigrants with over 145 languages spoken daily in the city. That is, one in four individuals speaks a foreign language at home. What makes Houston special is its diversity and inclusion of different nationalities. Houston continues to be the most ethnic and racially diverse city in our country. People from all over the world choose Houston to visit, invest, bring families here, and also to seek refuge. Houston is a great city for refugees. With five resettlement agencies, it hosts the largest number of refugees

in our country, giving an opportunity to thousands who escape war and persecution from their own countries.

Houston is a city with a generous heart. In addition to the resettlement agencies, there are numerous non-profit organizations, various international communities, and volunteers who help refugees feel at home.

Houston is the city of international trade. It is an energy city and the medical city of the world. Its success is a testament to the inclusivity of individuals from all over the world. Immigrants bring to Houston their skills and talents, their languages and cultures, and their food and traditions which make our city better for all. They bring life to our city.

Houston understands the positive impact of immigrants and celebrates them annually. Huston’s International Festival, which is held each spring, is a ten-day celebration of dance, culture, music, and food from all over the world. Since its first publication, ten years ago, LUXCIOR has celebrated and supported immigrants. Created by an immigrant, this one-of-a-kind magazine has showcased the work of immigrant communities in Houston and their success in business, art, science, medicine, and philanthropy. THE GONDOLO ORIGIN

The Gondolo collection was named after the famous retailer in Rio de Janeiro, Gondolo & Labouriau, with whom Patek Philippe enjoyed a strong and successful business relationship between 1872 and 1927. This bond resulted in the creation of timepieces - designed exclusively for the Brazilian retailernamed the “Chronometro Gondolo”.

The collection initially consisted only of pocket watches, before the first wristwatches appeared in the 1920s.

At a time when Europe struggled with lean years and faced a World War, it was Gondolo & Labouriau alone who retailed close to a third of the entire production of Patek Philippe watches. Sales were so spectacular that in Brazil, ‘Patek’ even became a substitute for the noun ‘watch’; instead of buying a watch, you bought a Patek - even if it wasn’t a Patek Philippe at all.

WE ARE BACK AT HARAS

Five years after our last presentation at Fabulous HARAS Hacienda, we are delighted to announce the return of the Houston Exotic Auto Festival’s 8th Annual Edition, this time partnering with F.E.I. - Fédération Équestre Internationale, in a double event combining a display of The Woodlands and Houston’s top supercars -among other attractions- with the first International Equestrian Jumping Competition in our city.

FEI’s 3-day event will start Thursday, May 5th, ending with the Grand Finale the same day of the Fest, on Sunday, May 7th, from 11 AM to 4 PM. Many participating vehicles will gather at Lamborghini Houston - Title Sponsor of the H.E.A.F. since 2019 - at 10 AM, for a rally that will end at Haras Hacienda.

For the first time in our history, FEI, the international governing body of equestrian sports, is presenting an event in Houston, attracting the elite of the Jumping Equestrian Discipline, recognized as one of the three Olympic equestrian disciplines. Only Haras Dos Cavaleiros could pull this off, as the premiere name in equestrian events in Texas. The first of its kind, the Huracán Sterrato explores a new frontier in driving pleasure, designed to push the envelope when the asphalt ends. The super sports car is equipped with a dedicated iteration of the LDVI (Lamborghini Integrated Vehicle Dynamics) system, featuring specific Strada and Sport calibrations and introducing Rally mode. Like a work of art, it represents the leading edge of innovation: the super sports car concept imagined in a radically new way.

Automobili Lamborghini introduces the new Huracán Sterrato: the first super sports car designed for maximum driving pleasure even away from the asphalt on loose or dirt surfaces, reinterpreting the very concept of sportiness and emphasizing the brand principles of brave, authentic and unexpected.

The Sterrato perfectly encapsulates the values at the core of Lamborghini’s DNA and redefines the sports car concept. Powered by a V10 engine reaching a maximum speed of 260 km/h, the newest Huracán delivers the ultimate driving experience with perfect grip on all kinds of terrain; the thrill is further enhanced by the presence of the Rally driving mode in the LDVI system for the first time in a Huracán.

The design of the Sterrato is a call to adventure, with a height increase of 44mm to that of Huracán EVO and interiors in signature Verde Sterrato Alcantara that cater to the pilot, allowing immediate access to all control features. A set of bespoke Bridgestone tires completes the new Huracán’s getup, providing a strong, perfect grip on gravel and tarmac and guaranteeing unparalleled per-

formance for the ultimate exploration of new terrains. been increased. The iconic air intake on the rear hood accentuates the car’s sporty, audacious character. The front underbody protection, sills and wheel arches emphasize the car’s muscular stance. The Huracán Sterrato interior reflects the “feel like a pilot” philosophy adopted for every Huracán model. The titanium rear arch, four-point safety harness, carbon bi-shell sports seats and aluminum floor mats invite the driver into a space made for adventure. The driver has full control of functions from behind the wheel, with displays inside the vehicle offering intuitive access to information.

The revised LDVI system (Lamborghini Integrated Vehicle Dynamics) of the Huracán Sterrato delivers specifically-calibrated STRADA and SPORT drive settings for road, with the new RALLY mode optimized for dirt and loose surfaces including snow: another facet of the super sports car’s fun-to-drive personality. Its wider tracks and increased ride height made short shrift of the snowy setting, and the Sterrato’s Bridgestone Dueler AT002 run-flat tyres, specially-adapted for the all terrain Huracán and rated for its top speed of 260 km/h, assured maximum performance in the wintery conditions. The aluminum front under-

body, reinforced sills and rear diffuser, and enhanced wheel arches protected the Sterrato from icy obstacles, and emphasized its powerful muscularity in the challenging winter sports environment. This car caught the attention of skiers and vacationers in its ice-cool winter whites of Bianco Phanes with details in Grigio Telesto and black carbon fiber including the reinforced wheel arches. Future owners of the Huracán Sterrato can also create their own unique sporty style from 350 external colours and more than 60 interior leather and Alcantara options through the Lamborghini Ad Personam personalization program.

The Huracán Sterrato’s 5.2-liter V10 engine delivers a maximum power output of 610 CV and 560 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, combined with 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and electronically controlled all-wheel drive with rear mechanical self-locking differential. Designed to offer optimum performance on loose surfaces, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds.

How much higher is ‘HIGH’ ?

As publisher, this is the one question I keep on asking myself. And that’s the reason why we will never stop raising the bar in every way possible, no matter the cost. After all, we represent some very amazing luxury brands -both in retail as well as in professional services-. No need to ellaborate on this: it’s in your hands.

Now let’s talk style. In fashion photography, there should be no boundaries, there should be no limits to creativity. If the sky is the limit, well, on the right page you have it. The next step up will be talking to SpaceX -and we probably will. And lastly, check if The Devil still Wears Prada.

I definitely think there is much more than just finding beautiful models, great designs, exquisite jewelry, breathtaking locations, and cool cars, yachts, or jets -although we definitely look for all of them. There is an absolute craving to reach far beyond “The Edge”. We don’t care to be “edgy”. Everyone else is, without making much of an effort. “The 10X WOW factor” -for lack of a better expression- is the bare minimum we can settle for. And I think we have accomplished that plenty of times. Let’s remember some of them, although as I review these images, I can see how primitive we are compared to what’s coming next.

Fortunately, Houstonians are always so cooperative and so much fun to work with!

Exotic cars, yachts, and jets will always go well with fashion. This particular event was part of a fabulous two-day photoshoot we named “Fast & Fabulous”, somewhat based on the movie as you guessed, and published in July 2019. It took place at Galaxy Airport in The Woodlands, and MSR Houston in Angleton.

Producing a photoshoot like this one is not as simple as it may seem. It requires weeks of planning and assembling all the components. In this case, it required permits from a large private airport and a race track, styling six models at Saks Fifth Ave. -always willing and glad to be part of the action-, picking the right jewelry, arranging its security, transporting brand new supercars -99% of the time from Indigo Auto Group, the coolest partner to have for occasions involving exotic automobiles-, Ducati motorcycles from V1 Moto -another great and fun partner-, and Butch Hammad at Imperiale TV, nearly 30 people between models, professional motorcycle riders and car drivers, jewelers, stylists, makeup artists

and hair stylists, front and behind the scenes photographers, videographers, transportation, food, support staff, and of course, our publisher (our biggest pain in the neck...lol). And a lot of time. Several hours are allocated to picking the best out of hundreds of images, and then there are many hours of editing both photographs as well as videos. The actual photoshoot usually takes all day. In this case, two full days.

But at the end of the day, although we all go home exhausted, it’s quite rewarding to see our work published and all over the web and social media.

Most times -like in this case- we videotape our photoshoots, so for many scenes, we can’t use actual models, but professional drivers, motorcycle riders, skydivers, etc.
