Classic Tales is a multi-sensory approach to guiding children’s experience with literature in a classroom rather than stage environment. After reading each tale aloud, we work as a group to express the story dramatically. We arrange props and simple scenery, choose costumes from the collection, use speech and song to tell the story and move expressively to instrumental music for processions, dances and other plot elements. Parents watch the final minutes of each class to view our work. The wonderful story Jack and the Beanstalk is terrific for acting out together, especially appealing because it works with the ideas of good vs. evil and being able to use one’s wit and problem solving skills (plus a bit of magic) to correct a wrong. Join us as we dance to music by Carl Orff and act out “The Ballad of the Noble Knight” in medieval style. I’m sad to see how Hollywood has distorted these wonderful fairy tales. Give your child a chance to experience the original with friends! Instructor: Robin DeLamater Members: $75 Ages: 6-7 Non Members: $100 #F13107800

Limited Palette Painting
Oil painting can be very challenging and extremely rewarding all on the same day. The options of subject matter, value range, color, edges and surfaces can be exhilarating or create mud on the canvas. Starting with a one-color palette, working up to a prismatic palette, this class will help simplify some of the mysteries of color theory and help the painter see value relationships as never before. A limited palette almost ensures color harmony in your painting since all secondary colors are mixed from the same primaries. Since this method of painting is helpful for all subject matter, a variety of subjects will be used, including Plein Air, weather permitting. This class is appropriate for oil and acrylic painters. Previous drawing instruction is required, painting experience is helpful. The class will be most enlightening to those who have been taught to paint with a full palette. Please email the instructor if further information is needed. kencosgrove@mac.com. Instructor: Ken Cosgrove Members: $225 Ages: 18+ Non Members: $250 #F13173400

Portrait Painting with Limited Palette
Anders Zorn, Rembrandt and many other great painters often painted their subjects with a limited palette. Working with live models, this class will explore monochromatic, achromatic and prismatic palettes, and will simplify color theory allowing the painter to take advantage of color, edges and surfaces in a less complicated context while seeing value relationships as never before. A limited palette also almost ensures color harmony in your painting since all secondary colors are mixed from the same primaries. This class is appropriate for oil and acrylic painters. Adult: Drawing & Painting Expressive Portraiture: A Weekend Workshop
It is said that there are at least two people in every portrait—the subject and the artist. The ability to find more expressive means of portraiture is the focus of this class. A successful portrait is more than a likeness in chalk or paint. It is a representation of a warm, breathing being with a character and a soul. Our role as an artist goes well beyond the ability to represent the subject as a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional plane. Relying on anatomy and an understanding of the properties of light from previous instruction, this intensive workshop goes beyond the structure of the subject and explores methods of expression to better represent the character of the model. Through demonstration and discussion it will provoke you to explore new ways of looking at portraiture. Previous instruction required. Please email the instructor for a supply list or if further information is needed. kencosgrove@mac.com. Instructor: Ken Cosgrove Members: $185 Ages: 18+ Non Members: $210 #F13173600

The head, torso, and appendages will be sculpted methodically, highlighting the essential characteristics that make us human. This proven method relies on memorization and understanding, thus students are advised to keep a sketch book during the week. ■ There is a new membership level called household membership, with a flat annual fee of $40; individual memberships and family memberships will no longer exist. Every person in the household may access membership benefits for the $40 household membership fee.. ■ Members will no longer pay a $10 fee per semester to take a class. Since more than 75 percent of our members take more than one class each year, this will result in a savings during the course of a year-long membership that more than offsets the change in individual member price. ■ Non-members who take a class will pay a registration fee to take classes. Members will receive a discount on tuition for classes; non-members will pay a higher price to take a class.
