Classic Tales is a multi-sensory approach to guiding children’s experience with literature in a classroom rather than stage environment. After reading each tale aloud, we work as a group to express the story dramatically. We arrange props and simple scenery, choose costumes from the collection, use speech and song to tell the story and move expressively to instrumental music for processions, dances and other plot elements. Parents watch the final minutes of each class to view our work.

Artist Statement
I divide my time between printmaking and oil painting. My passion for both artistic processes stems from the ability to communicate in two different voices. I am inspired to use what I see in everyday forms, interiors and landscapes in my work. I find there is a constant source of inspiration just waiting for interpretation. I prefer to work from life using everyday items elevating them to show their beauty and importance.

Fused Glass Dish

In this class students will learn techniques for making glass pattern bars in the kiln. A pattern bar is a thick slab constructed from multiple layers of glass. The bar is fused together and then sliced in cross section to reveal the design inside. The slices are great for making repeating intricate patterns in glass. On day one students will make several bars using different techniques. On day two they will use a wet saw to slice the bars and learn how to incorporate them into their fused glass work. Some glass fusing experience is helpful but not necessary. A basic materials fee of $40 will be due at the beginning of class and additional materials will be available for purchase.

Advanced Skills for Watercolor Painting
This class will continue to concentrate on compositional skills with an emphasis on color and how color can affect the composition! Atmospheric color can help create depth in your painting; triadic color compositions can create fun and unusual images; continued use of complimentary colors can give more depth to your paintings; and last but not least we will explore “glazing” with watercolors! Please note: The first session of this class will concentrate on color, “real color” vs the “artist’s color” and the second session will concentrate on “composition” - pushing the edges. Color Basics in Oil Workshop
Geared toward students who would like to improve their color vision, this three day oil painting workshop will focus on exploring the fundamentals of color and light first developed by Claude Monet, the father of Impressionism. We will start with a combination of colored blocks and simple still life arrangements under dramatic lighting effects to excite the bold use of color to create form. We will then shift to painting still life arrangements in natural light, requiring a more subdued range of colors. This workshop is a recommended requirement for further study. Participants will leave the workshop with a foundation in place for painting the true effects of light on the subjects they are painting. Ages: 18+ 386500
This class is for the beginner to intermediate student. Students will begin studies drawing single objects and working up to a final still life composition. Color studies, brush work and introduction of various painting mediums and surfaces will prepare the student for the final paintings. Two paintings will worked on in class. One painting will be completed with a transfer method and the other with free hand techniques. Students may bring objects from home to construct a still life in class. Please contact instructor if you intend to supply your own articles. A materials fee of $45 will include two canvases, one board and one stretched, a set of acrylic paints, transfer materials, and paper. This fee will also cover additional paint colors and painting mediums. Class brushes, pallet knives and pallets will be supplied. New Membership Program Information
Membership fee: Beginning in January 2013, MHCA will no longer require a patron to be a member to register for a class. However, joining as a member provides valuable benefits to class registrants, including discounts on class tuition and savings on registration fees. These savings are significant for patrons who take more than one class in a year at Maryland Hall. MHCA will also change the minimum membership fee to $40/household (replacing individual, child individual and family member rates). All members of a household will be able to access MHCA member benefits for the $40 membership fee. Registration fee: As of mid-January 2013, a $10 registration fee/ semester will be paid by non-members only. Registration fees are nonrefundable, unless the class is cancelled.
