Artstart One

Art projects are based on themes within the Kindermusik class which joyfully explores things that go like trains, boats, planes and our bodies through singing, dancing and the use of instruments. Kindermusik Our Time

Kindermusik Our Time focuses on the child’s healthy emotional development as confidence, curiosity, selfcontrol and communication begin to emerge. Activities also include story time, sound imitation, rhyming and object identification as well as experiencing a variety of musical moods and timbres. Painting for Two

This class is designed to introduce painting techniques and explore color in a fun environment for both children and adults. Each child and adult pair will work on at least two finished paintings. Ballet Theatre of Maryland’s School of Classical and Contemporary Dance is the first and oldest professional ballet school residing at Maryland Hall. It is also the only school with a fully comprehensive classical ballet and contemporary ballet training program for beginning through intermediate, advanced, pre-professional, apprentice and professional students of dance. Students enrolled in level V and VI classes are eligible for our Apprentice I Training Program which provides them with more intense training and performance experience with the professional company in productions at Maryland Hall. The School’s professional faculty trains students from an anatomically-based syllabus with expertise in styles from such schools as the San Francisco Ballet, Ballet West, American Ballet Theatre, Richmond Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, Connecticut Ballet and Ballet Theatre of Maryland, all of which provides students with a rounded experience in the training of the Classical Ballet Form. Class Focus is on: Correct body alignment and placement; hands-on anatomical training; internal core strengthening and development of muscle groups; balance; flexibility; aerobic and anaerobic stamina; musicality; concepts of form and style; discipline and artistic integrity; and the body’s capacity to express individuality through movement. An emphasis is placed on beginning barre building towards centre pointe work. Prerequisite: Students must take three technique classes per week in order to take point or via discretion of the instructor. Students must take a technique class prior to taking pre-pointe/ demi-pointe, so the muscles are warmed up and prepared for the intense work of these classes. Students are encouraged to take this class twice per week in addition to the three technique classes. LA/NY Style jazz is recommended as a cross trainer.

Beginning Ballet 3: Pre-Pointe /Intermediate/ Demi-Pointe Strengtheners & Stretches

Students begin preparing the legs and feet for pointe work through a combination of pre-pointe appropriate physical therapy (PT) exercises and ballet technique. Students will work with therabands and other PT props to strengthen the appropriate muscles in the legs, feet, back, and abdominals to prepare students anatomically for the arduous work on pointe. Students will begin this work in soft technique shoes, but will progress to wearing pre-pointe/demi-pointe shoes. The Director of the School will fit students in these shoes via appointment at Dance Supplies, etc. in Severna Park. Prerequisite: Mastery of Beginning Ballet 1 & 2 work, a minimum of 2-3 years of ballet training and consent of faculty plus 3 technique classes per week. Introduction to Classic Drawing Techniques II

Beginning to Intermediate level students. This studio class builds on the first session. Students will set up their own still life compositions and fine tune their drawing skills through the use of a variety of pencils and charcoals. This class gives the student a chance to “personalize” their drawing techniques. Limited Palette Painting

Beginning to Intermediate Level. This studio class offers a comprehensive study of Landscape painting in Acrylics. Topics cover the basic components of landscapes including perspective, pictorial design and color work. This class also includes a brief introduction to “Plein Air” painting to prepare the student for outdoor painting in the spring and summer. Oil painting can be very challenging and extremely rewarding all on the same day. The options of subject matter, value range, color, edges and surfaces can be exhilarating or create mud on the canvas. Starting with a one-color palette, working up to a prismatic palette, this class will help simplify some of the mysteries of color theory and help the painter see value relationships as never before. A limited palette almost ensures color harmony in your painting since all secondary colors are mixed from the same primaries. Since this method of painting is helpful for all subject matter, a variety of subjects will be used. This class is appropriate for oil and acrylic painters. Previous drawing instruction is required, painting experience is helpful. The class will be most enlightening to those who have been taught to paint with a full palette. Clothed Figure in the Interior

This class will introduce students to painting the clothed figure in the interior with models posed in natural, every day poses. We will begin with simple poses in uncomplicated scenes to give the student practice in organizing the figure in a painting. Expressive Portraiture I

It is said that there are at least two people in every portrait—the subject and the artist. And it’s true. The ability to find more expressive means of portraiture is the focus of this class. A successful portrait is more than a likeness in chalk or paint. It is a representation of a warm, breathing being with a character and a soul. Our role as an artist goes well beyond the ability to represent the subject as a threedimensional object on a two-dimensional plane. Using valuable tools from previous instruction, this class goes beyond the structure of the subject and explores methods of expression to better represent the character of the model. Introduction to Painting with Encaustic

Encaustic, the oldest form of painting combines beeswax and damar resin with colored pigments. This workshop introduces and expands the use of the encaustic medium for participants. Pressman will guide students in basic and advanced techniques to creating works that are rich in layers and transparency. Color application, methods of fusing, image transfers, mark making, pastels, graphite, collage and are just some of the topics that will be covered. Encaustic equipment, history and safety will be addressed. Along with technique, experimentation is encouraged and combined with attention to art fundamentals, editing and content. Learn to make site-specific sculpture on the grounds of Maryland Hall using recycled, repurposed, or reclaimed materials. Vitrograph Stringer

Pull threads of molten hot glass from a kiln in this exciting one day workshop! The vitrograph technique is perfect for making wavy lines in glass. You can twist, bend, fold, coil and pull the glass into curvy lines and strings. Once cooled, these stringer can be fused with sheet glass to make compositions with fluidity and movement that’s not possible any other way. No glass experience necessary. Cold Connections: Dynamic Solutions for No-Solder Jewelry

In this workshop, students will be introduced to techniques such as riveting, screwing and wiring as a way of assembling jewelry without the use of a torch and solder. Silver Clay and Glass Jewelry

Bangles and Cuffs

The two worlds of fused glass and silver clay (PMC) collide in this exciting two-part class. On day one, students will learn glass cutting and fusing basics to create glass cabochons. One day two, students will set their cabochons in silver clay, and learn the basics of forming bezels and bails out of silver clay. Students will complete 1-2 pendants in class. No glassworking or silver clay experience is necessary, but advanced students are also welcome. A supply fee of $35 is due to the instructor at the start of class.

Make beautiful cuff bracelets and bangles from copper using basic hammering techniques and simple tools. Cutting, hammering and metal coloring techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. Co-ops

offer studio time in a non-instructional setting. These opportunities are for artists who wish to work independently and practice their skills in a collegial environment. Each co-op has its own description, facilitator, fee structure and time allowance as described below. All co-op participants must be current members of MHCA.

Sculpture Co-op I

A weekly venue for stone, wood and clay sculptors. Artists with varied experience would work independently side-by-side, sharing knowledge and skills. What if I wish to withdraw from a class?

Membership, registration and material fees are non refundable. Tuition fees are fully refunded for cancelled classes. If you wish to withdraw from a class, there is a $5 service charge and you must contact the education department prior to the start date of your class for a 100% refund of tuition. 100% refund for notification received at least 5 working days prior to the start of the class

What are the fees involved with registering for classes at Maryland Hall?

* All payments for tuition and fees must be made to Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts prior to the start date of class. Pro-rating of class tuition is not available. Tuition: The tuition is set by individual instructors and values for each class. Materials fee: Materials fees are established by instructors and are specified in the detailed class descriptions found online. Materials fees are paid to the instructor (unless otherwise noted) on the first day of class.

New Membership Program Information

Membership fee: Beginning in January 2013, MHCA will no longer require a patron to be a member to register for a class. However, joining as a member provides valuable benefits to class registrants, including discounts on class tuition and savings on registration fees. These savings are significant for patrons who take more than one class in a year at Maryland Hall. MHCA will also change the minimum membership fee to $40/household (replacing individual, child individual and family member rates). All members of a household will be able to access MHCA member benefits for the $40 membership fee. Registration fee: As of mid-January 2013, a $10 registration fee/ semester will be paid by non-members only. Registration fees are nonrefundable, unless the class is cancelled.

What if my class is cancelled?

Classes may be cancelled if sufficient enrollment is not reached by the start of the class. You will receive a full refund including the tuition, membership and any additional fees. To help ensure that your class will not be canceled, please register early.

Additional Procedures and Policies Pick up & drop off procedure for children under 12

Parents/caregivers of children under the age of 12 are required to escort their children to class and sign in. At the conclusion of each class, parents/caregivers must sign out for child pick up. Special pick-up arrangements (adults other than parent or primary caregiver) must be communicated directly to the teacher prior to pick up time for class.

Inclement weather policy

Check the MHCA website www.marylandhall.org for cancellation information. MHCA follows the Anne Arundel County Public Schools inclement weather policy: If AACPS are closed all day, MHCA will NOT have classes. If AACPS are open one or two hours late, classes held before noon at MHCA are canceled. If AACPS dismiss early, after-noon and evening classes at MHCA are canceled. If AACPS are closed or dismiss early on Friday, please check the MHCA web site.

Student Behavior policy

To ensure a pleasant artistic experience for all of our students, we ask that they uphold the following Student Behavior Policy: ■ Students are expected to come prepared for and to participate in class. ■ Students are expected to treat the faculty, building and fellow students with respect. ■ Students are not allowed to possess or consume alcohol or controlled substances in or around the building. ■ Smoking is prohibited inside the building. ■ Students who are consistently disruptive during class time may be asked not to return by the instructor.
