WHEN MISSIONS AND PHOTOGRAPHY WALK OF HANDS GIVEN

MASSAO IN MISSIONS is a Ministry that I carry out, which aims to go through Brazil and the World to photograph missionary actions with the most diverse missionary Christian organizations and partner churches. And then donate all pictures material to these same organizations and churches, in order to help, contribute in the communication of what is Missions, their accomplishments, needs, goals and purposes. The main purpose of this ministry is to bridge the gap between Missions and all those who are unaware of this subject. As well as deepening the knowledge and involvement of those who already know missions, but superficially. So, this is one of the calls God has given me, to go out into the world to take pictures of missions and communicate this to the rest of the world. Showing through photography, we can carry a message of Love and Hope and be used by God to transform lives through the witness of the Living Christ.

Many people ask me why photography? That simple! Because an image can communicate more than a thousand words! Therefore, in order to further improve the communication about Missions, I also created the Missions Magazine, in order to communicate about the missionary work of these same missionary organizations and churches through Photojournalism in a simple and clear format. (Free distribution) Well, I realized that only the donation of the photos was not enough so that the excellent work of these missionary organizations and churches could be widely disseminated. All of this, because I faithfully believe that clear and effective communication of Missions, diminishes the distance between the Mission and all those who are not yet involved, who do not support, who do not contribute and do not go in Missions. Embark on the missionary journey of this edition. And my thanks for participating in reading.

The Mission Amazon Outreach is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian mission organization formed to support churches and other organized ministries in Brazil in spreading the Gospel message of Jesus Christ throughout the Amazon River Basin. We partner with indig-

enous churches in Brazil that are seeking unreached people in the 30,000 villages with no Gospel presence, pastoral leadership, or biblical instruction. Amazon Outreach takes Christians from every walk of life to the Amazon River to participate in various ministries. These

ministries include medical, dental, eye care, evangelism, construction, and bible instruction for men, women, and children. By meeting physical needs we establish relationships with the villagers opening the door to share the love of Jesus Christ with them.

BRAZIL The story of the Amazon

S 44

tretching over 4,345 miles, the Amazon River Basin is an expansive, yet isolated region. The Amazon River is the longest river in the world and runs through the South American countries of Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Brazil and accounts for 20% of the fresh water that drains into the world’s oceans. There are an estimated 30,000 villages on the banks of the Amazon River with no Gospel presence.

Indigenous people who have been neglected by civilization inhabit the Amazon. They call themselves “the forgotten people.” The river is the only highway, and the boat is the only transportation. The State of Amazonas has few major roads or highways roads, and transportation is mainly by river. This is also where over 1,000 tributaries come together to form the Amazon River. And it is in these rivers where our mission trips take place. Not only on the Amazon but also the Solimões, Negro, Cuieiras, and Madeira rivers.

Many of the villages we visit make you feel like you have stepped back in time a few hundred years. These villages are usually located off the main river on a tributary or a beautiful lake. The homes are generally built with wood, bamboo, and leaves. They are very small homes with several people living in one house. No matter what size the village there is, there is usually a Catholic Church, a school, and a soccer field. The people along the Amazon are quite humble and reserved. After they get over their shyness, they are very

hospitable and always greet visitors with a smile The men usually hunt or fish in the morning while the women grind manioc (the primary source of calories) and take care of the children. People travel in flat bottom canoes from place to place. There are no bikes or cars in the smaller villages, but you will find an occasional one in the larger villages

TRANSLATORS MISSIONARY’S The fundamental work of the missionary’s translators, one of the most important areas of the Mission. Because enables communication between river people (ribeirinhos) and American missionary’s volunteers.

46

47

48

FUNDAMENTAL GEAR

I

In any mission, the team is like an engine and each volunteer is like a fundamental piece for its operation. Depending on which one breaks, everything stops.

In order to accomplish a mission with more than half of the team of American volunteers who do not speak Portuguese, the work of translating missionaries is extremely important. The main attribution of translating missionary’s is the translation from English to Portuguese and vice versa, among American missionary volunteers and river people in the various actions of the Mission. Being VBS, health area, dentist, evangelism, glasses, woman ministry, among others. However, contrary to what many people think, the attribution of these missionary translators is not limited to just translating. Besides translators, they are missionaries! Suitable for serving where required in all areas of the mission with accuracy. Be in the area of children, painting houses, in the area of praise, evangelism, pharmacy, among others. The profile of these volunteers are mostly university students from Manaus, active and exemplary in their churches and passionate about missions. Some of them, due to frequent missions, are already studying translation. If it qualifies still more to continue translating in missions and being able in the near future to form disciples in this area of translation in missions. There are many missionary organizations in the Amazon. This brings a great demand for these volunteer translators. That is, it is a ministry of great importance and great demand. That is why it is important to value them and treat them as missionaries, not just as simple translators. Because they are missionary’s!

52

The work of missionary’s translators is not just about translating. They are involved serving in Praise, children ministry, and others areas of missions.

53

The translators actions in the Mission go further the borders of translating. They are also missionaries serving God in different areas of the Mission like VBS, worship and others areas.

accepted Jesus if she would go with Him if He returned that day. I questioned Melissa how she could know that when only God knows who will go to heaven or not. At that moment, I knew I had a decision to make. Although it was hard to believe I did not deserve heaven, I was not sure I was going there. Eventually, we went up the Rio Negro to visit the riverbank communities. At our first stop, Melissa shared

testimonies, the group was evangelizing door to door on the streets of Manaus. I listened to each word; God’s plan of Salvation was a decision to be made—now, during this lifetime—by putting your faith in Jesus as Savior. Jesus said that he “came that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” On one occasion, Melissa asked a lady who had

her testimony with me. I was confused how Melissa, being such a good person, could have ever deserved hell. Then the Holy Spirit opened my understanding—despite

my

zeal, I was going to hell. My sin separated me from God. It is not by works but by grace—a gift obtained by Christ on the cross, and affirmed when He rose again. God revealed His love and plan to save me through Jesus, and I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior. vHe later led me to Seminary and Missionary training (Instituto Linguístico Ebenézer da Missão Novas Tribos do Brasil), but that is another story. Today, I am a missionary who works as an English teacher. I was a full time missionary for over 10 years. Nowadays, as far as going on trips, I travel when opportunities arise. So, my happiest days are when I am doing Missions,

began in 1999. After taking several mission trips to Brazil, a small

group of

short-term missionaries

(people very similar to you) developed a passion for the villagers of

the

Amazon River Basin. They formed Amazon Outreach, elected a board of directors, and raised the funds to build a mission boat. One mission boat turned into two plus a well drilling boat. We have taken over 500 teams to the Amazon, visited hundreds of villages, and drilled over 120 wells. Over 150 surgeries have been performed—the majority of

which were financially

impossible for these indigent villagers.

AMAZON CONNECTION

The most important thing during a mission trip is not to be stuck in the actions and schedules. The most important is the connection with the people, building relationship with the people of the villages through the love of Christ reflected in our lives. This is the best way to spread the Gospel and love as Christ. 97

TESTIMONY DEJAISON RODRIGUES

I

was raised in a Christian home, was my parents and five brothers and until today we all serve in the missionary work. My call to missionary work began at the age of nine. But only when I was 25 years old started my work like missionary evangelist and sailor in the

boats of the

Presbyterian Church in the Amazonian rivers. My desire to be a dentist just started when I came across an opportunity to go to college. It was the Lord Jesus showed me that I should do a dentistry college, and I immediately obeyed by understanding that it was His will. It was not an easy path, yet God led me through difficulties, challenges, and scarce financial resources until I graduated. He was faithful and did not let me miss anything in all five years of college until I became a dentist. God provided all my needs, so that I could complete my dentistry course and serve in His work. During this way, many doors were closed, however whenever this happened God opened many others because it was His will I became what I am today, Dental Surgeon - Endodontist ( Endodontics is the specialty of dentistry responsible for the study of dental pulp, the entire system of root canals and periapical tissues, as well as the diseases that afflict them. ) and Missionary. And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, [even] to them that are called according to [his] purpose. Romans 8:28

A

s a short-term missionary, we have the luxury of being able to come back, sit down, and reflect on all that took place on our short trip. In my case, I have just returned from another trip to the Amazon River Basin in Brazil. While it’s true that some things can be expected to happen: 1. God will reveal Himself to those who seek Him 2. God will perform miracles for those who wish to see and experience them 3. God will work through a surrendered heart to achieve His work

202

However, more often, God will take our breath away with a blessing so great that we didn’t even realize we were hoping to achieve! This trip had just this type of event. And it happened through one of the most basic and simply of human needs, crystal clear, cold, clean water. Did you know that 1 in 8 people in the world do not have access to safe, clean drinking water? Water borne illnesses caused by unclean drinking water claim the lives of 5,000 children every day. Thousands of children die every day because they do not have clean water. The same water used

Adoption Isn Testimony of Brenda Clark Bailey-Holmes

A

tfter being married for 14 years, my husband and I finally felt at peace with not being able to get pregnant. This was not an easy peace, it wasn’t easy getting to that point and only God could’ve healed and changed our hearts through such a difficult and personal time. We were married at 20 in 2002. Babies! Through the next 14 years we would be told by a lot of different doctors that we could not get pregnant, and they all had different reasons. This was a deep, dark weight that would always be looming. We went through a miscarriage and that weight got even heavier and more real.

260

We had friends around us getting pregnant and it was so hurtful, personally, not to get to have that joy. Of course we were always happy for them but it would always sting, there was always a reminder that this was not happening for us. 2016, God have us peace. I say He gave it to us because only God could change our outlook and our heart and our situation for His glory, His path for our personal direction. He created a compassion for people in our hearts and it’s like He physically took bitterness and grief out of our body and replaced it with peace. We were so tired from being so heartbroken in this one area in our life, which affected every other area, and we rested in knowing He was going to show us something great.

n’t Strange Early 2016 we both told each other that we felt called to adopt. What a crazy sentence! This was never our heart or plan. We couldn’t wait to get it started and soon we were announcing our adoption news and getting the adoption paperwork finalized for the next steps to take. One week away from an adoption meeting something crazy happened. I was pregnant. Me. I was pregnant. It finally happened! We had a great and fun pregnancy and he was born February 2017. I look at him daily, still shocked how he is here! We put the adoption on hold until recently. We weren’t going to push that off because our pregnancy came along. That pregnancy was a gift from God for our obedience to His call for us to adopt. He called us,

we were obedient, He honored our obedience. We are now in the process of our adoption and we cannot wait for the rest of our story! That weight that we had before God called us to His purpose was so heavy and sunk us to not be able to move out of our emotional pit. Like an anchor that is held underwater making you stuck in one place. But the freedom of answering God’s call and following through with His plan for us has lifted that heavy anchor. We are free in His plan. We are at peace because of His mercy. He has gifted us because of our obedience!
