MullenLowe is proud to support MassArt and its artists.
WELCOME to the 2017 MassArt Auction! This year marks the 28th anniversary of MassArt’s signature Annual Benefit Art Auction. This event has grown exponentially since 1989 but what has remained constant is the extraordinary array of featured artwork that continues to attract the most discerning collectors. MassArt Auction proceeds go to scholarships and support for academic programs that directly benefit our most important asset – our students. MassArt is the nation’s first public, independent college of art and design in the country. Auction proceeds raised tonight provide the next generation of artists, designers, and educators with a world-class education regardless of their ability to pay. Our sincerest thanks to all of YOU – sponsors, patrons, artists, gallery partners, faculty, staff, students, and volunteers - for joining us tonight to make this event possible. Quite simply, we couldn’t do it without you. Please enjoy the evening - bid high and bid often!

Tali Kwatcher Chair, MassArt Foundation

auction guidelines FIFTH LINE BIDDING Be the fifth bidder! When you bid on the FIFTH LINE of a silent auction bid sheet you will be entered into a raffle to win free artwork installation services. Imagine having a professional come to your home and help you hang and arrange your art. The good news is that even if you don't win that particular item, just having your bid on the FIFTH LINE will enter you into the raffle. Go ahead—be the fifth bidder. Three winners will be chosen at random after the Auction. All winners will be notified by email the week following the event. Installation services to be scheduled at a mutually convenient time for both parties within one year of the Auction.
BEFORE THE AUCTION Preview and bid on auction artwork at paddle8.com/auction/massart starting March 24, 2017 through April 7 at noon EST. Bids may be placed on either Live or Silent Auction lots during this time. All Silent Auction lots are available for purchase for 150% of their stated value. For more information visit MassArtAuction.org. You can also download the Paddle8 app to your iPhone and bid and buy artwork from your phone before the Auction.
AT THE AUCTION / CHECK-IN During check-in, guests will receive bidder numbers when they provide a valid credit card or leave a signed blank check at the registration table. Bidder numbers will not be issued unless either a credit card or a check is provided. This will ensure prompt payment of all artwork and shorten the checkout process significantly. If you registered to come with a guest, other than your spouse, your guest will have to register for his or her own bidder number unless you have requested otherwise.
To expedite your check-in process, contact Manager of Stewardship & Fundraising Events, Corinne Wardian at 617.879.7022 to attach a credit card to your bidder number before the Auction.
SILENT AUCTION BIDDING There are three Silent Auction sections that will close in twentyminute intervals upon completion of the Live Auction. Each item offered in the Silent Auction will have a bid sheet posted adjacent to it. To place a bid, write your bidder number on the sheet opposite the amount you wish to bid. Please place bids according to the minimum increments posted on the bid sheet; any bid not in the proper increment will be disqualified. You may bid on any item in the Silent Auction until the section is closed. At the posted closing time a Silent Auction Captain will collect the bid sheets and determine the winning bid for each item. If you are the winning bidder at the close of the Silent Auction section, your bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. In the event of a dispute over a Silent Auction bid, the Executive Director of Advancement will determine the winning bid and the decision will be final.
BUY NOW OPTION Any Silent Auction lot may be purchased outright by paying 150% of its stated value. Artwork may be purchased at any time during the Auction by placing a bid on the highlighted Buy Now line with your bidder number on the artwork's bid sheet. Once the bid has been placed on the Buy Now line of the bid sheet, the work is considered sold. Bid sheets will remain adjacent to the work until the section is closed. The Buy Now option is available during the Opening Reception on Wednesday, March 29 and during the Public Preview Days on March 30 – April 6 and to online bidders at paddle8.com/auction/massart.

ARTWORK PICK-UP/DELIVERY
The Live Auction will begin at 8:00PM and continue without breaks until all items have sold. To bid in the Live Auction, hold your bid card up high with the number facing the Auctioneer. The highest bid acknowledged by the Auctioneer constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item by that bidder.
To ensure the safety of all artwork, NO ARTWORK WILL BE WRAPPED TO TAKE HOME THE NIGHT OF THE AUCTION. After paying for your purchases at the check-out station, please make arrangements at the pick-up/delivery station through one of the following options:
To place an absentee Live Auction bid visit at paddle8.com/auction/massart or contact Executive Director of Advancement Kathy Calnan at kcalnan@massart.edu or 617.879.7012.
1) Pick up work in the Bakalar & Paine Galleries on Wednesday, April 12 or Thursday, April 13, 4:00 – 7:00 PM; or 2) Have work delivered to your home in the Metro Boston area; or 3) Have work professionally shipped at the expense of the purchaser.
BUYER’S PREMIUM A buyer’s premium equal to 10% of the winning bid will be applied to each lot sold and will be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. A buyer’s premium will not be applied to any pledge(s) made during the Live Auction’s Raise Your Paddle fundraising opportunity. Gifts made through Raise Your Paddle are outright donations and are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law.
SALES TAX All artwork purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption certificates from other states will be accepted if presented with a business card or on letterhead. All certificates must be presented during guest check-in.
PAYMENT Cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express will be accepted as payment. Guests will be asked to put a credit card on file during check-in for payment of artwork purchases and donations made at the Auction. Notification of winning bids and receipt of purchase will be emailed following the event. You may visit the check-out station with any questions at the end of the evening. All purchases are final and must be paid for on the evening of the Auction. No exchanges or refunds will be allowed.
The Office of Fundraising Events will contact buyers who did not make pick-up/delivery arrangements the week following the Auction.
GENERAL RULES The Massachusetts College of Art and Design Foundation reserves the right to add items to or withdraw items from the Auction without notice. The values listed are estimates of fair market values. Items have not been appraised by the MassArt Foundation. Each person (bidder) issued a bid card assumes all risks and hazards related to the items obtained at the Auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising there from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design Foundation, its employees, the event organizers, sponsors, and volunteers connected with the Auction. All items purchased in the Live Auction become the property of the winning bidder once that bidder is acknowledged by the Auctioneer.
Thank You. We thank you for your support and wish you the best of luck on your auction bidding!

2017 AUCTION COMMISSION
2017 AUCTION COMMISSION
Portrait commission
Wall painting commission
Lot 6: Rania Matar
Lot 17: John Guthrie ’92
Rania Matar's identities as a Lebanese/American woman and mother inform her work, which focuses on girls and women in both her cultures, highlighting how female subjectivity develops in parallel form across cultural lines. While most of her earlier work focused on prepubescent and teenage girls, her most recent project, Unspoken Conversations, which started when her own daughter left for college, focuses on the very potent relationship between mothers and daughters, and on growing up and growing old. Her work will be included in a solo exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum: In Her Image, which opens in December 2017.
John Guthrie has parlayed his training in aerospace engineering into artworks of brightly colored geometric forms and lines, always perfectly composed and meticulously rendered. Bid on this rare opportunity to have an artist’s studio practice brought to your home and witness John’s thoughtful process as it unfolds into a stunning, high-impact wall drawing.
The winner of this commission will receive a beautifully unique and intimate custom 36” x 44” photograph of themselves, their daughters, and/or the different generations of women in their family. Date of the commission to be set at a mutually convenient time for both parties within a year of purchase. Commission includes the portrait sitting, unframed editioned print, digital file for personal use, and four unframed 8"x 10” prints. There will be additional travel expenses for locations outside of metropolitan Boston. Courtesy of the artist and Carroll and Sons.

Mind Reader, 2011 Oil on Canvas 24” x 24” $4,000
Heart, 2016 Mixed Media on Panel 32” x 16” $1,000
Courtesy of the artist and Carroll and Sons, Boston Monique attended Brandeis University and Queens College and currently lives and works in Watertown, MA. Her paintings pay obvious homage to Roy Lichtenstein’s “Blonde” paintings of the 1960s and 70s but she reworks the text to expand the interpretation of the original with a more female-friendly approach. She has chosen not to replicate the benday dots of the Lichtenstein paintings that were inspired by clippings from newspapers and comics. Her focus on paint application reminds us that, although often seen reproduced in print, Lichtenstein was foremost a painter; she encourages us to see his paintings again with attentive eyes.

Ronni Jane Casty
One should either be a work of art or wear a work of art.
MassArt is grateful to have counted Ronni Jane Casty as a valued member of the MassArt community and is saddened by her passing. As her husband Ron noted, Ronni was
“a woman of valor.”
As much as she was bigger than life in so many ways, she was just as understated and private, all adding up to a sophisticated, gracious, generous, and beautiful lady. Our sympathy is extended to Ronni’s family and many dear friends.
