* 100% OF YOUR GIFT GOES TO STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS | Tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
RAISE YOUR PADDLE! WHEN: At the end of the Live Auction on Saturday evening, April 9th (~9:30 PM) WHERE: MassArtauction.org/bid MassArt students are Creative critical thinkers | Resourceful | Resilient | Still pursuing their dreams But they can’t do it alone (especially right now!) and that is where you can help! Everyone wins when you participate in Raise Your Paddle. Raise Your Paddle is our annual appeal for outright contributions to our student scholarship fund. Your gift, of any amount, will make a world-class art and design education accessible for motivated MassArt students. Starting in 2021, we are now designating our annual Raise Your Paddle appeal to a newly created fund called the Finish Line Fund. We were concerned that some MassArt seniors were at risk of not graduating on time due to financial pressures brought on by the pandemic and wanted to do whatever we could to help them cross the finish line to graduation, which was the reason this fund was created. Thanks to the support of our generous donors at last year’s Auction, we raised enough money to help 30 seniors graduate from MassArt! We hope you will help positively impact the lives of more students again this year. When you support our students with a Raise Your Paddle gift, you make it possible for generations of students to make the world a better place through the power of art and design. Change a student’s life — MassArt students are worth the investment. Raise Your Paddle!
WHAT IT COSTS

For an in-state undergraduate student to attend MassArt during the 2021–2022 academic year:

If you are not able to join us for this year’s Auction to participate in the Raise Your Paddle segment in person in real time, you can still make a gift of any amount by going online to massartauction.org/give.
OR BY SCANNING THIS QR CODE: If you do participate in this year’s Auction but miss the chance to Raise Your Paddle (or perhaps were outbid on that piece of art you had hoped to buy and are feeling generous!), please consider making a gift in support of the Finish Line Fund before the Auction ends to help more students like Ytthr get across the stage at Commencement!
“Thank you so much, I’m very honored to have received a gift from the Finish Line Fund. This support will be monumental to finishing my degree. It’s been a wild rocky road but I’m so glad to be on it towards the final lap. I truly from the bottom of my heart am so appreciative of this opportunity as finances have been the biggest reason for my gap year(s).” YTTHR LAVAUD ’22, PRINTMAKING Finish Line Fund Recipient

Auction Guidelines BEFORE THE AUCTION
We encourage all MassArt Auction guests to register in advance of Friday, March 18th on Bidsquare by visiting www.bidsquare.com/user/register. This will allow you to be ready to submit bids when the Auction officially opens for bidding on Monday, March 21st at 12:00 NOON EST via massartauction.org/bid. Once you register, Bidsquare will be notified and will approve you for bidding or request additional information to complete your registration via email. If you created an account on Bidsquare for previous MassArt Auctions, your log-in credentials should still be valid, but we recommend that you double-check them to make sure. Registering a few days in advance will ensure you will be approved to bid in time for the auction. PUBLIC PREVIEW DAYS
We are excited to install all of the featured artwork from both the Live and Silent Auctions this year in MassArt’s Design and Media Center for viewing! The works will be on exhibit during a public preview period, running Monday, March 21st - Thursday, April 7th by appointment. The College is following COVID-19 guidelines and protocols for the health and safety of our community. For more information on how to participate, please visit massartauction.org or contact Kathryn Calnan, Executive Director of Advancement.

by another competing bidder. At the end of the defined bidding period, the lot is sold to the highest bid offered. In this timed auction, sales will begin to close incrementally at 12:00 NOON EST, beginning with Lot #100 and running through Lot #396, which represents the end of the auction. If you are the winning bidder at the close of the Silent Auction section, your bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. LIVE AUCTION
We plan to host this year’s Live Auction on Saturday, April 9th in the Design and Media Center at MassArt. Our live Auction will be held in real time before an audience of in-person and online bidders with Auctioneer Karen M. Keane, MassArt Trustee and CEO, Skinner Inc. For those attending virtually, please join us at massartauction.org/ bid promptly at 8:00 PM EST to participate. Alongside those participating in the room, Bidsquare allows a bidder to remotely participate online. Bidders who are unable to attend the Live Auction in real time can place absentee bids online starting Monday, March 21st at 12:00 NOON EST, which will be automatically processed during the Live Auction. Bidders participating in the Live Auction virtually will have their bids automatically received by a remote clerk, who will place your bid in real time.
E: kcalnan@massart.edu T: 617.879.7012 SILENT AUCTION BIDDING
While the artwork is on view on campus, bidding for the Silent Auction will take place soley online. The three Silent Auction sections outlined in the catalog will all be featured in one timed online auction on Bidsquare starting Monday, March 21st at 12:00 NOON EST through Sunday, April 10th at 12:00 NOON EST via massartauction. org/bid. What is a timed auction? A timed auction is automated, and takes place solely online. The bidding for each lot is opened at a predetermined level at a set time and stays open over an extended period. During this period of open bidding, a bidder will be able to see the current high bid on each lot. You may place a higher bid at a defined bidding increment. A bidder’s identity is always kept confidential during the auction. In a timed auction, bidders are automatically informed by email if they are the high bidder, or if they have been outbid 8
BUY NOW — NEW FEATURE!
We are thrilled to debut a new “BUY NOW!” feature for this year’s Auction! A “Buy Now” option will be available for all Silent Auction lots during the timed online Silent Auction on Bidsquare, beginning on Monday, March 21st at 12:00 NOON EST via massartauction.org/bid. The “Buy Now” option will be removed at 12:00 NOON EST on Friday, April 8th (48 hours before the close of the Silent Auction). During this time, any Silent Auction lot may be purchased outright by paying 150% of its stated value. Artwork may be purchased by clicking “Buy Now” on a selected lot on Bidsquare and remitting payment of the issued invoice immediately. If payment is not received by Friday, April 8th at 12:00 NOON EST, the buyer will lose claim of the artwork and it will become available for bidding during the last 48 hours of the Silent Auction.
THANK YOU! We thank you for your support and wish you the best of luck on your auction bidding!
RAISE YOUR PADDLE
ARTWORK PICK-UP/DELIVERY
Raise Your Paddle is our annual appeal for outright contributions to our student scholarship fund. Your gift of any amount will help MassArt remain affordable and accessible. Starting in 2021, funds raised from our annual Raise Your Paddle appeal are designated to a newly created fund called the Finish Line Fund, which supports MassArt seniors at risk of not graduating on time due to financial pressures and helps them cross the finish line to graduation. Gifts made through Raise Your Paddle are outright donations and are tax-deductible as allowed by law. We encourage our guests to consider participating in Raise Your Paddle at the end of the Live Auction or making their gift online at massartauction.org/give.
Due to the persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic, our team continues to work closely with our artwork partners to provide an excellent experience for our buyers. We plan to offer all buyers the options of local Boston pick up, free delivery in the Metro Boston, MA area* or shipment of artwork at the expense of the purchaser during the weeks after the Buy Now Post-Sale Auction. Thank you in advance for your patience.
POST SALE
The Post Sale will run for a week and a half after the Auction from Wednesday, April 13th - Friday, April 22nd on Bidsquare. The Post Sale is comprised of unsold lots from the Live and Silent Auctions. Each lot is listed and available for outright purchase at the opening bid amount (60% of the estimated value of the piece, unless otherwise stated). Please note that you must also register for this sale on Bidsquare in order to participate, even if you already registered for our Live and Silent Auctions. BUYER’S PREMIUM
A buyer’s premium equal to 12% of the winning bid will be applied to each lot sold and will be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. This premium helps to offset the administrative costs of running the MassArt Auction in order to ensure the funds raised through artwork sales go directly to student scholarships and academic programming. A buyer’s premium will not be applied to any pledge(s) made during the Live Auction’s Raise Your Paddle fundraising opportunity. SALES TAX
All artwork purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser lives out of state or possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption certificates from other states will be accepted if presented with a business card or on letterhead. Please contact the Fundraising Events team at auction@massart.edu with questions.
Please visit our website at massartauction.org or contact Fundraising Events Coordinator Olga Batyuk at auction@massart.edu or 617.879.7014 with any questions you may have. ARTWORK INSTALLATION & TRANSPORTATION SPONSOR:

Qin Feng’s expressive compositions serve as meditations on time and motion. His bold brushstrokes lyrically combine the gestural impulses of action painting with the tradition of Chinese calligraphy painting and the artist often playfully pairs the traditional medium of ink with alternative materials such as coffee, tea and oil paint. Qin’s interest in balancing the dynamic between positive and negative space within his compositions mirrors his interest in exploring the delicate harmony between humans and nature. Qin’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Her ongoing series of paintings of doughnuts invests this unlikely subject with unexpected presence and identity. “Eveleth’s paintings restlessly shift across a spectrum of meanings, covering along the way all the distances between opposing significances; prosaic and profound, profane and sacred, banal and intriguing, to say nothing of the axis between cool asexuality and gushing, if veiled, sexuality.”

Carlos Estévez is from the generation of Cuban artists and intellectuals who, emerging in the 1990s, developed a sense of connectedness to the world outside of Cuba where social, political, and geographic boundaries do not exist compared to the restricted freedoms on the island. Estévez uses images from the physical world to convey his thoughts on isolation and solitude. His trademark mechanical figures include hybrids of man and nature, combined with elements of music, marionettes, architecture and telephones. His interest in alchemy and the paradoxical nature of man are evident in this new series illustrating the divergences that derail us from our higher self.

Rick Fox, a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MFA) and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (BFA), studied with George Nick, a longtime realist painter and mentor to many painters in New England. Fox’s work began as a response to his environment by portraying his surroundings with honest detail. Fox likes Cezanne’s approach, remarking, “In order to create honesty you need to embrace the flatness of the surface. I’m experimenting with how much I can simplify the shapes but with the goal of trying to use flatness to get more volume and illusion." In that simplification, suddenly new opportunities arise to organize and push color. Rick Fox is represented by Gallery NAGA in Boston, MA.

Inspired by a View-Master and pop-up books as a child, Thomas Allen became interested in recreating these three-dimensional experiences by using mid-century books and pulp fiction paperbacks as still life subjects. Allen gently cuts around the shape of his figures, physically releasing them from their two dimensional surface, and then places them in a new display of meaningful interactions. With an offbeat and cinematic way of storytelling, Allen continues to create photography that is animated, contemplative and intriguing.
Anita Thacher was a New York-based artist known for her multimedia installation, film, video, public art and photographic works. Her art explores issues of perception often with natural and domestic themes.

Jee Hye Kwon earned her BFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Inspired by architectural forms and topographical shapes in nature, Kwon creates works which combine the renderings of an architect with the delicate skills of a master jeweler. The artist’s works are distinguished by their ‘see-through-spaces.’ Fluidly interlinked organic forms suggest dynamic movement, accentuated by the white and black of silver and shakudo. Kwon’s work is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Kamm Teapot Foundation, North Carolina. Kwon is represented by Mobilia Gallery in Cambridge, MA.
Elizabeth McDevitt is drawn to the hand forming techniques of chasing, repousse and engraving, often in combination with enameling. Finding inspiration in the patterns and beauty found in Nature: water, flowers, leaves, shell forms, insects and birds, both abstract and realistic, often in minute detail. McDevitt states “I strive for perfection, a spiritual goal which is always just beyond the reach of the human hand." McDevitt received her MA in art history from University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1980. The artist has studied jewelry and metal smithing extensively through workshops and international travels. In 1982, she studied with the renowned enamelist John Paul Miller at the Cleveland Art Institute. McDevitt’s mother was an art student at MassArt in the 1930’s. Makiko Oda studied environmental design at Joshibi University of Art and Design in Japan. Her studies in plant life continue to be a key source of inspiration in her works. Her astute use of materials is evident in her elegant sculptural jewelry, formed with reclaimed slices of wood and layered with lustrous gold and silver leaf. Oda’s jewels reflect the varied expressions that plants show us: the way that green leaves ripple in the breeze and reflect sunlight, their ever-changing tones in the autumn as their borders overlap, and the elemental happiness that plants bring to people. Oda has been recognized with the Excellent Use of Materials Award at the International Craft Exhibition, Itami, Japan, and the Excellent Prize Award at the Japan Jewelry Art Competition. Oda is represented by Mobilia Gallery in Cambridge, MA.
Yuri Tozuka received a BFA from MassArt. Tozuka is influenced by elements such as dark humor, satire, and illogical notion. She uses traditional metalsmithing materials and techniques to create objects which are not just sculptures, but also jewelry. She was a studio assistant for traditional Japanese techniques in metal at the Penland School of Crafts in NC. Tozuka’s work has been honored with numerous awards and has been internationally exhibited and collected. In 2012, she won an award from REFINED VII at the Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. In 2019, Tozuka participated in the group exhibition Some Assembly Required at the Art Museum Complex, Duxbury, MA.
