Influential leadership is the key attribute that separates individuals who can manage a team versus those who can influence without authority. Influencing subordinates or providing direction is a practice that has been targeted as critical soft skill development for a few decades now. Documenting decisions in the correct order influences design and drives efficiency in developing work packages. An existing industry standard format organizes this process, and provides a checklist to guide the contractor, designer, and owner to evaluate options and to make informed decisions consistent with the owner’s objectives. In fact, supply chain fragility is still an issue we are facing across the nation and spanning the world. Jennifer is the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and the Leonard A. Hadley Professor of Business Analytics in Tippie College of Business. In her role as Associate Dean, she leads the efforts of the development and innovation of graduate education programs in the Tippie College. Blackhurst received her doctorate in Industrial Engineering from the University of Iowa in 2002. Fall protection is the duty of all employers with employees working at heights. Not only are you required to properly train employees, you are also required to properly train supervisors of those individuals. Every year, fall protection is an OSHA top-ten most-cited violation. Most of the time, equipment fails due to a lack of proper maintenance or inspection. In 2020, 645 people died on the job because of falls to lower surfaces, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In this seminar we will discuss the techniques for performing a pre-use inspection, how to identify an adequate anchorage point, and also best practices for mitigating exposure to an undesirable outcome.

Chris is the Compliance Assistance Specialist for Iowa OSHA and has been with Iowa OSHA since mid-2014. Chris Pankow | Cross Roads Mobile Maintenance - Williamsburg, IA

Chris began his career as a Park Ranger in the US Corp of Engineers Co-op program, interpreting and enforcing federal, state, and local recreational laws, regulations, and policies, while leading operations and providing a safe recreational experience. Following the Park Ranger program, Chris transitioned into heavy equipment operation focusing on large earth-moving equipment. During this tenure, Chris began his passion for training and safety. Following his heavy equipment career, he shifted into the Iowa DOT Highway and Maintenance division, performing various duties including field safety responsibilities. Since 2004, he has been a volunteer firefighter, first responder, and certified EMT. Chris assists with coordinating training activities, expanding his knowledge into high/low angle rope rescue, grain bin safety, and hazmat, among many other public safety initiatives. Chris has dedicated his career and personal passion to ensure the safety of his community through his volunteer fire rescue, environmental protection, and technical trainer in the high hazard task.

Jamie Papian | Iowa Lead and Asbestos Safety - Johnston, IA

Jamie is a multi-state licensed Lead and Asbestos Inspector, HUD Housing Quality Standards inspector and Certified Indoor Environmentalist, with more than 30 years in the commercial and residential construction industry. In addition to multiple lead and asbestos licenses, his environmental certifications include Water Restoration Technician, Applied Microbial Remediation Technician and Fire & Smoke Restoration Technician. Jamie is the owner and primary training instructor of Iowa Lead & Asbestos Safety; a private, company that provides EPA, OSHA and State required training for lead and asbestos professionals. He also owns Alliance Environmental Services; a private company that provides environmental testing, consulting and compliance services for issues related to lead, asbestos, water damage and indoor air quality.

Lane Thayer | Iowa American Rescue - Gilbert, IA

Lane has been in emergency services on the law enforcement side for 10 years. He has where he has developed an extensive background and expertise in firearms training and trauma management. He is the primary instructor at Iowa American Rescue, a premier provider of emergency response training in Iowa.

EARNING CREDITS AT THE 2023 WINTER CONFERENCE

MBI’s mission is to be the essential resource for improving member performance and promoting a business environment favorable to the construction industry. A key component of facilitating our mission is our education and training programs. MBI has demonstrated a history of offering quality education and training programs for industry leaders, managers, supervisors, and craft workers. This history has been driven by our membership to aid in the continuing quality improvement of their human capital. The high performing members that are part of MBI have long understood the value of making sure that they and their employees are continually engaged in learning in order to remain highperforming organizations.

In an effort to recognize those individuals in the industry who believe in the importance of lifelong learning and have demonstrated their desire for personal growth through their participation in the wide array of education and training activities offered by Master Builders of Iowa, we have established the Master Builder Designation (MBD).

Master Builder Designation credits are awarded in the areas of Leadership, Project Management, Ecological Construction, Ethics, and Safety with virtually every education program that MBI offers providing credits in one or more of these critical areas. The MBD program is a great tool that will benefit employees and companies by developing a well-rounded, high performing workforce.

Individuals interested in being awarded the MBI Master Builder Achievement Award need to meet or exceed 150 education and training credits. Upon completion of the required 150 credits, the individual will be recognized at the next MBI Winter Conference and will be presented with a remarkable award that was specifically designed for this program. MBI member firms are encouraged to showcase the accomplishments of employees who have captured the Master Builder Achievement Award to industry partners and owners, as well as on company websites and social media platforms.

To enroll in the Master Builder Designation program and start your journey toward earning the Master Builder Achievement Award, please complete an enrollment form and submit it to MBI.
