In 1984 John Daugherty, a coach and teacher at Coconut Creek High School, hosted the first-ever South Florida Masters Basketball tournament in Coconut Creek, FL. Twenty four years later, in the summer of 2008, Kevin McNamara and Lisa Reinhard established the Masters Basketball Association (MBA) and retained Dave Hulett to be the CEO and Tournament Director. Thanks to the efforts by these great supporters of masters basketball we celebrate the hosting of our 34th annual Masters Basketball National Championship, and the 10th tournament managed by the MBA. My first time in South Florida was 1992 and as a sideline observer I have witnessed the growth of the tournament since the move to Coral Springs. Kevin’s and Dave’s vision was to continue to have the best Masters Basketball Tournament in the United States. With 47 teams competing in the 2018 tournament, that vision continues successfully. The MBA Board of Directors and staff have worked to assure this year’s tournament is

Since helping Kevin McNamara form the MBA in 2008, Lisa Reinhard has been the constant in the success of the tournament. As Kevin’s representative on the Board of Directors, Lisa is the E.F. Hutton of the Board, when she speaks the rest of us listen. I want to personally thank Lisa for her time and insight. I also want to commend Jordan Klemow, the sole member of the MBA Board based in South Florida. He has worked tirelessly this past year to recruit teams and help with many other key parts of the tournament including the banquet planning. Finally, the tragic events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School took place less than 5 minutes from our Coral Springs home. Several MBA participants and staff had family and friends that were at the school or affected by it. I cannot imagine the anguish the event caused. I applaud the school staff, first responders and local hospitals for their efforts as we wish for the best for everyone affected. Best regards for an enjoyable week on and off the court!

Fewer than one in 35 (2.9 percent) of high school senior players get to play college ball and of those that DO, fewer than one in 75 (1.3 percent) actually makes it to the NBA. (Only three in 10,000, 0.03 percent, of high school senior players get drafted by an NBA team.) So, whether it’s 10 years played or one minute, reaching the League is something special. Former NBA players can count on getting special treatment at the annual National Masters Championship, the showcase event of the Masters Basketball Association. They’ll notice it the moment they step on the court. “You see some guys they get real serious on me and they try some things to get me,” said 54-yearold Billy Thompson, a six-year NBA veteran and one of only four men ever to win an NCAA Championship (with Louisville in 1986) and an NBA Championship (with the Lakers in 1987) in the back-to-back seasons -- Bill Russell (University of San Francisco, ‘56, Boston, ‘57), Henry Bibby (UCLA, ‘72, New York Knicks, ‘73), and

Thompson, is back playing in this year’s Masters after taking last year off and, while he is currently senior pastor at Jesus People Proclaim International Church in Deerfield Beach, Florida, he is going to do anything BUT turn the other cheek when facing the competition. He’s also not shy about trading some talk on the court. “You still talk smack,” he said, with a laugh. “That’s the one thing that never leaves basketball. That’s all part of it. But it’s a lot of fun. It’s meant to be fun. “A lot of the guys on all the teams, you get to know them and you’re friends. You’re glad to see them,” he added. “Some of them can’t play because of their injuries or they’re older but they still come and watch. It’s the camaraderie that I enjoy. I found out about it,

probably about eight years ago. Some of my friends were playing in it and they told me to come on and check it out. They told me Tim Hardaway was playing, Greg Kite, even Eddie Pinckney was playing back then. So I just started going whenever I had a chance.” Wali Jones has similar affinity for the Masters and is definitely a familiar face around the event. He probably wore an even bigger target on his back than Thompson. Jones is a Philadelphia native, who played collegiately at Villanova, then played seven of his 10 NBA seasons in “The City of Brotherly Love.” He was a point guard on the 1967-68 World Champion 76ers, that featured four future Hall of Fame players (Wilt Chamberlain, Hal Greer, Billy Cunningham and Chet Walker) and were coached by

another (Alex Hannum). That team went 68-13 and ended the Boston Celtics’ run of eight straight NBA

NBA PLAYERS ARE UNIQUE. Not only in their talent, which is obvious, but also in beating the odds.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson (Michigan State, ‘79, Lakers, ‘80) are the others). “I see it and I love it because that’s just how it’s been. I used to do it to the guys I played against when I was on the playground. You see the better kids, you want to get out there and you want to outdo him. You want to show him, let him know, ‘Hey, I’ve got some stuff. Then you get to bragging, ‘Hey, I scored on whoever. He’s in college or he’s in the NBA.’ So I know how it goes.”

“So you always had that extra edge where you knew guys were trying to play you or stop you. You’re a competitor.”

When his playing days were done Wali found his way to the MBA, where the different age levels -- 4045+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+ and 75+ -- allowed him to continue playing.

“Guys would say, ‘It was really a pleasure to play against you,’ ‘I watched you,’ You had complements

Jones knew what was coming from non-NBA’ers every year but took that intensity and used it as motivation. He did it for three decades, finally hanging it up after last season’s event. Ironically, he was one year short of actually BEING a 76er, as he turned 76 on February 14. “Of course, they want to come out and compete against a guy that used to play pro ball to show that they can compete against you. It meant something to them,” he said.

But that intensity turned to respect once the games ended.

like that,” Jones said. “But when you get on the court, you’re a competitor. So guys would come at you. People do come at you because you did play. They want to show that they can compete.” Showing they can compete doesn’t necessarily mean showing up a former NBA player. Sure everybody wants to win but most participants see the bigger picture. There’s a level of respect and guys embrace the opportunity to share court time with an NBA player great. “To me, it’s a thrill,” said 56-year-old Michael Siegel, a Penn graduate

and a CPA, who is a CFO by day and an avid basketball player by night (he plays in leagues four nights a week) -- 2018 will be his third straight Masters. “Most of the guys that I’ve dealt with are nice guys. I don’t think it got the competitive juices going any harder. Really it’s a game of survival because you’re playing five games over four or five days. Part of it is just being able to make it through the week without your body breaking down. “As you get older, the differential narrows, particularly if you have stayed in shape and haven’t gotten hurt,” Siegel added. “Where a guy like myself, who’s in very good shape, can play with and keep up with guys that played at that level in the past, when 30 years ago I belonged in the stands and not on the court with some of these guys, it’s a lot of fun.” Getting to play with a former NBA great can actually be as big or bigger than scoring on one. Scott Werner, a varsity-level player at Coral Springs High School who has been playing the Masters since 2003, was a teammate of former NBA marksman Glen Rice, an NCAA champion with Michigan in 1989, an NBA champion with the Lakers in 2000, and a 15-year NBA veteran, in 2007. Their team reached the final game of the 40-45

2018 NATIONAL MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS

championships, the only team to break through during the C’s run of 10 titles in 11 years. Jones scored a game-high 27 points in the Sixers’ championship-clinching 125-122 Game Six win over the San Francisco Warriors.

“Playing against and with former pro players has been a great experience and makes you realize the how skilled and talented pro players really are,” said Werner, who, in addition to Hardaway, has played against such NBA-level talent as Thompson, Pinckney (an NCAA champion with Villanova in 1985, a first-round NBA Draft pick of Phoenix in 1986 and a 12-year NBA veteran), Mitchell Wiggins (a first-round Draft pick of Indiana in 1983, a six-year NBA player and father of Minnesota Timberwolves star Andrew Wiggins), Jerry Reynolds (a 1985 NBA first-round pick of Milwaukee, and the first person credited in using the term “24/7” to describe his jump shot, “Good 24 hours, seven days a week, 365 days a year.”), Rod Strickland (a DePaul star, firstround Draft pick of the Knicks in 1988 and a 17-year NBA veteran), Johnny Newman (a second-round Draft pick of Cleveland in 1986 and a 16-year NBA veteran), and Greg Kite (a 1983 first-round draft pick of the Celtics, a two-time NBA champion and 12-year NBA veteran). “The dedication and time that these guys have to put in to get to that level is unbelievable. I believe that these former pro players only enhance

Siegel agrees. His brush with greatness at the Masters came on the court as well as on the sidelines. A couple of years ago he played with former UNLV star and 13-year NBA veteran Reggie Theus. Last year he played on The Redbirds with former UNLV star and 13-year NBA veteran Reggie Theus. This team roster also boasted player/ coach Rick Pitino, a two-time national champion coach (Kentucky in 1996, Louisville in 2013), the first coach to take three teams to the Final Four (Providence also made it in 1987) and one of only four coaches to take a team to the Final Four in four different decades (Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim and Dean Smith are the others). “The week before the tournament, Pitino called two practices and ran us through plays and functioned as our coach. That was, obviously, a big thrill, too,” said Siegel. “I could see why he is so highly regarded as a coach because of the way he taught and explained things. Obviously, I’d never been exposed to somebody that has coached at that level.” As the 2018 Masters takes place, fans should keep an ear out for memorable names from days gone by in every age group, then sit back, watch and appreciate the legends that are going end-to-end

with the pride with which they once did so at the world’s highest level. There’s still a chance to see some flashes of greatness. “I pick my spots, when you will exert some of the energy that you have left,” said Thompson, with a laugh. “I concentrate on my ability to rebound and block some shots, at least be around the rim. Now and then I get out there and try to shoot some threes for fun. It’s just so good to be able to do a lot of the things that you see opening up on the court that once you see it open you can go and do it and get it done. Sometimes when your wind is not there and you’re not in shape, you can see what needs to be done but can’t move and do it.” Keep an eye out in the crowd as well. “I won’t be competing but I always make it a point to go up there and see the guys compete,” said Jones, who is a featured host on Sports Inside and Out (www. sportsinsideandout.com and see their Facebook page). “I’m gonna miss it,” he added. “Guys are amazed that we were still playing at 65, 70, but that’s what life’s about. Your health is your wealth. I would come up there and they were amazed that I was playing at 55, 60, 65, 70, but it’s something I liked doing. It was a wonderful experience.” ■

for East Bank Saloon on their 70+ Division Championship squad. Having never met, the two Longhorns were introduced at the tournament and were quick to flash each other the famous “Hook’em Horns” hand sign. “It is always special when you are out of Texas and you flash the ole Hook’em at a fellow Longhorn,” Brizzolara said of the introduction. Despite their recent success on the court neither Baker nor Brizzolara made their marks in Austin on the hardwood. However, they did excel on different fields.

HOOK’EM HORNS The University of Texas has had no shortage of great athletes across all sports over the years, Legendary names like Earl Campbell, Roger Clemens, Ricky Williams, Vince Young, and Kevin Durant. It is of no surprise that when you look at 2017’s MBA All-Tournament teams you will find Longhorn alumni. Tony Brizzolara was dominant in the frontcourt for 60+ Division Champion Victory. While Kelly Baker was a force down low

Baker was a hulking lineman from 1964-66 for famed Longhorn head coach Darrell Royal. While Brizzolara starred on the mound for the UT baseball team, before being drafted in the 2nd round of the 1977 Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves. Even though he made his mark on the gridiron, Baker is no stranger to the game of basketball he was a captain on the 1962 Dumas High School Texas 3A State

Championship team. In 1961 Baker was coached by Don Haskins who would win an NCAA title at Texas Western in 1966. “He was a tough son of a gun, but he taught me everything I know. I still shoot free throws the way he taught me.” Baker said of the Haskins, who would make history by being the first to start five African-Americans in a championship game. Standing at 6’5” Brizzolara stayed away from basketball in high school to focus on football and baseball. However, after retiring from baseball at the age of 29 having spent 10 years in the Braves system including three seasons with the big-league club, he wanted to stay active and took up hoops. He hasn’t stopped since. After meeting at last year’s tournament, the two keep in touch occasionally through e-mail. They each still follow Texas closely and are proud to be a part of a legendary alumni base. “There are many iconic institutions in this country. I am proud to say that the Texas Longhorns is one of them,” said Baker. If you are a fellow Longhorn and see Kelly and Tony this year, be sure to flash the Hook’ em.

RAMBLIN’ ON When Loyola University Chicago went on their historic run to the 2018 Final Four many casual basketball fans scratched their heads and said I’ve never heard of them. However, alumni of small Catholic school are quick to point out how storied the school’s basketball program is. Competing in the 50+ division for the Chi Town Cats is Stephond Robinson a member of the Ramblers from 1983-88. He was a redshirt on the LU squad that made a run to the Sweet 16 in 1984 before losing to No. 1 Georgetown and Patrick Ewing. “People don’t realize that Loyola has the most wins per tournament appearance,” said Robinson who is in his seventh year covering the team as a color analyst on the radio and TV.

“Harkness was one of the best players I had ever seen,” said Alan Denenberg who played at Loyola from 1957-60. “It was a special time I remember watching the game on TV delay. Denenberg who was the leading scorer in the 75+ Division last year

“There is a ton of history there for such a small school.” That history includes a National Championship in 1963. Led by star forward Jerry Harkness Loyola would defeat Cincinnati 60-58 in Louisville, KY.

Robinson has a genuine love for the history of Loyola and looks forward to meeting Denenberg this year. “I love talking to Alumni especially ones from the ‘60’s and those special teams.” One of the faces made famous by the Ramblers’ Cinderella run is that of Sister Jean who was the team’s biggest supporter and team Chaplain. “She is always smiling and knows her basketball and gives out pointers to the players before practice and has a genuine love for the players.” Robinson said and added Sister Jean says a prayer before each and ends it with words any basketball player would want to hear. “Lord help us score!” ■

2018 NATIONAL MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS

“I was at the conference championship game, and didn’t miss a tournament game on TV.” Denenberg said. “My kids were excited. They kept asking to see pictures from when I played. It was a very exciting time.”
