WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN

May 2016 Welcome to the 32nd National Masters Basketball Championships, the eighth under the supervision of the Masters Basketball Association. To those of you who have played in past tournaments, I want to welcome you back and thank you for your continued support of our tournament. For the first-time players, we hope you have the same excellent experience our repeat players enjoy that keeps them coming back each year. Once again, the Board and Staff have invested a tremendous amount of time and effort for us to continue to have the National Masters Championships be the premier masters basketball tournament in the United States. Since last year we have been working very hard to promote the tournament and the MBA to a wider audience in the United States. We have added new elements to our website; have produced monthly newsletters; and have enhanced our social media presence. All of these activities are important to solidifying the future of the tournament. Ultimately, the tournament belongs to the Team Organizers and Players who have come to south Florida to compete over the past 32 years. We are counting on you to help us spread the word in your local communities about the quality of what we have and to help us recruit new teams, especially for the “younger” 40 and 45 divisions. I am also pleased to announce that our Welcome Banquet is returning to the La Quinta Inn & Suites Ballroom in Coral Springs. We think everyone will enjoy the more formal setting this venue offers. Our Keynote Speaker will be CAPT Greg McWherter, United States Navy–Ret. Captain McWherter was a two-time Commander of the Navy’s famous Flight Demonstration Squadron – the Blue Angels and is considered on of the premier fighter pilots in the world. He is an outstanding speaker and will have a positive message for us. We are honored that he will be with us. I look forward to speaking with many of you at the banquet and during the week at the Coral Springs Gym. I encourage all of you to exhibit good sportsmanship and to have a great time playing competitive masters basketball. Stay healthy and no hanging on the rim! All the best for a great tournament week,

Bill Watterson Chairman – MBA Board of Directors

for Those Who

n early May, the Coral Springs Gymnasium transforms into a basketball sanctuary where the sounds of sneakers squeaking on the court, balls swishing through nets and the celebration that follows can still be heard. However, the sounds are not coming from youth players, but those with a youthful heart. The 32nd annual National Masters Championships, operated by the Masters Basketball Association (MBA) annually attracts more than 30 teams - 300 players ages 40- 75+. The teams are comprised of players from all across North America and, in recent years, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. The National Masters Championships has become a staple in the basketball community, especially for those that still have the itch to play. Whether you are on the court or watching, the event is truly enjoyable for the staff, players, team organizers and spectators and will bring you back for years to come. The tournament brings together friends new and old and provides players with the opportunity to compete at a high level, while still having fun. The camaraderie is unmatched by any other basketball tournament. “You get a kick out of older guys playing and seeing older friends from all over the world still playing basketball,” said 13-year NBA veteran, Tim Hardaway. “I encourage people to go out there and support it. These are real people that love playing the game, this is real basketball.” Hardaway is one of many former pro players that have competed alongside many of the elite masters level basketball players over the past three decades. Having played in the NBA, or in some cases the old ABA, isn’t a prerequisite to playing in the national masters championships. (continued on page 15)

There are hundreds of elite basketball players ranging in age from 40 to their early 80s playing at a high-level on a regular basis in gyms across North America that match up evenly in many cases with former pro stars that have appeared in our tournament such names as LeRoy Ellis, Artis Gilmore, Jim Barnett, Rod Strickland, Billy Thompson, Mitch Wiggins and Hardaway, with former NFL star Cris Carter also a regular participant. The National Masters Championships, long recognized as the premier masters basketball tournament in the United States, has earned that reputation by providing a well organized tournament with top notch officials. Playing an official NCAA length game, teams are guaranteed to play four games and a fifth if in the championships on Saturday. All games are well managed by three veteran NCAA officials and experienced scorer’s table staff. “Our team organizers and players have told us over a period of many years that this tournament is the best in the United States,” said MBA Chief Operating Officer Dave Hulett. “Our tagline is merely a reflection of their opinion. We work very hard to deserve that reputation.”

Fort Lauderdale Beach

The tournament benefits from the yearround dedication and hard-work of the team organizers, who recruit players from across the United States as well as their local areas to travel to Coral Springs to compete. While some players are competing in their third decade, many new players will also be at the 2016 tournament.

Coral Springs Gymnasium

“One of our main goals now is to attract new teams in the 40 and 45 age divisions,” added Hulett. “We are working hard to make a stronger promotional effort to make certain the ‘younger age group’ knows we are here and about the high quality of the tournament. We want this new crop of teams and players to be able to look back in thirty years and marvel at the games they have played.”

We are fortunate to have so many special people involved with the Masters Basketball Association over the years and Gordy Pope of Greenfield, Indiana, was one of them. Gordy played in the very first Masters Tournament in South Florida and continued to play each year from his 40's to his 70's with the Indiana Masters, one of the tournament's most successful teams. Gordy was named to All Tournament teams a number of times over the years. Gordy, as the long time representative for Jostens in Central Indiana, supplied the MBA with the Jostens MVP rings. Gordy passed away this summer and to recognize his contribution to the tournament, the MBA Board of Directors has announced that the MVP rings shall now be known as the Gordon D. Pope MVP Ring by Jostens.

Hospice begins with a conversation. There is so much to talk about, so much to learn. What would you want at the end of life? What do the people you love want? It’s never too soon to talk about comfort, peace, dignity—hospice. Take the first step: Download “Considering Hospice Care: A Discussion Guide for Families” at HospiceCanHelp.com Read it, save it, print it, email it to someone you love. Start the conversation.
