WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN May 2017 Welcome to the 33rd National Masters Basketball Championships, the ninth year under the supervision of the Masters Basketball Association (MBA). It’s an honor to serve as Chairman for an organization that annually brings together hundreds of elite masters basketball players from across North America for both camaraderie and fierce competition. This year, for the first time, our field of teams extends into South Asia with the Sri Lanka National Masters 40+ team making the long journey to our venue in Coral Springs, Fla. The National Masters Championships has earned and successfully maintained the reputation of being the “Premier Masters Basketball Tournament” in North America. Much of the credit for how we are highly-regarded is attributed to the years of hard work by Dave Hulett, who recently stepped down as our COO. His expert experience and passion for the MBA enabled us to set the high standards we provide on an annual basis that many have come to take for granted. Any group of people can get together and host a tournament, but few can get close to the organization and professional atmosphere created by Dave. We salute Dave for his endless dedication and contributions he made to put us where we are today. Since the conclusion of the 2016 tournament, the MBA Board of Directors has been active discussing how to assure the long-term viability of the tournament. We hear many stories each year on how important this event is to you. Many of our players who are in their 70s and 80s have enjoyed our event for more than three decades and we want to make sure we can provide the same yearly opportunity for those players now competing in the 40s division. To do this we not only need to continue to recruit more new teams, but also secure additional corporate partners and friends of the tournament. As always, I want to encourage you to share any suggestions you may have with me or any board member. Finally, I want to thank the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau sports development team, the City of Coral Springs, the Coral Springs Sports Commission and staff of the Coral Springs Gymnasium for their continued support of the MBA. I also want to applaud Tournament Director Steve Nelson and his staff for their excellent work over the past year. I wish each of you a safe and fun tournament and no hanging on the rim!

“If you don’t like the way things are done, go do it yourself.”

or team organizer and MBA player JD Miller, this saying went a long way in creating a team in the National Master’s Championships annual basketball event. Team organizers play a pivotal role in the expansion and development of the Masters Basketball Association. Opportunity rests in the minds of those creative enough to take on the responsibility of creating their own team. With more teams comes more playing time and roster spots for the athletes competing in the MBA.

JD Miller, Our Gang, Team Organizer

With an organization that holds a tournament for those 40-plus guys want two things to go their way: to be on a team, and to play. This isn’t always the case for the tournament. Almost every competitor knows how difficult it is to motivate yourself to play, but have no luck finding a team. Or wind up sitting on the bench of a team you have no familiarity with, because that team has a loaded roster with guys who’ve played together for years. Miller, a former professional basketball player in Italy, had already participated with Masters Basketball for a couple of years, but got tired of being placed on rosters where he wasn’t getting the playing time he felt he deserved. Seeing the negative side of the free agency process, Miller felt the same pain of other players who are deserving of starting on a team, but just didn’t know anyone else in the tournament. For Miller, it was time to begin a new chapter of Masters Basketball – one as a player/team organizer, where he could have full control over basketball operations for his team. He gathered other players based in California and “Our Gang” officially became reality. Ever since, Miller has had Our Gang signed up for the tournament every year. “We’re always the first team to sign up,” said Miller, “I tell the guys that I’ll have the team every year, I’m an accountant. I am very organized. They don’t need to worry about anything, I’ll have the team. January 1st every year I have my rosters done and payment in. Each year I rent out a court for practice the Monday before the tournament

at 3 p.m. Our guys won’t have to worry about finding action, we’ll stick together.” “We are always trying to add more team organizers to the Masters Basketball Association,” said MBA Tournament Director Steve Nelson. “It ensures the growth of our fantastic tournament, and we are always available to assist anyone looking to become a team organizer.”

Kenny Hill, Charlotte Cosmos, Team Organizer

With the help of Nelson and the MBA, other players have had the opportunity to share a similar story as Miller. For Kenny Hill, he wanted to have control over what he wanted on a team. Hill formed his own team last year after playing previously with teams based in Chicago and Miami. Hill wanted to allow his team the opportunity to give other guys experience playing. The Charlotte Cosmos are compiled of players Hill has previously played with on other teams. Currently, Hill has one player from the free agent list. He gets his uniforms from his experience playing in the MBA. When it comes to team communication, Hill feels he has the right recipe. “I think that’s where teams go wrong, they don’t talk with each other. Every two weeks I am calling my players seeing if they’re still in. I want to hear ‘yeah, continued on page 15

Kenny, I’m still in, you just called two weeks ago’ from my players. I want to make sure they’re still ready to play in May.” While there are plenty of team organizers with background in the MBA, Joe Pantaleo finds himself in uncharted waters, and with pretty good company. A groundskeeper for 22 years at Indian Creek Country Club, a private club in Miami Beach, Pantaleo has always stayed active in sports, whether golfing or playing in rec basketball leagues. “About three to five years ago I heard about MBA. After doing some research, I decided to post for free agency,” said Pantaleo. This year, Pantaleo will be competing with his own team, the Red Birds. He also was able to acquire a bigticket player: Rick Pitino. “One day at Indian Creek, I saw Rick on the 9th hole and decided to ask him if he’d ever heard of MBA. He said, ‘No Joe, I can’t say I have.’ So I asked him if he’d ever seen 55-plus year olds play full court basketball, to which he said he hadn’t either. I told him I was forming the team and am trying to find participants. Rick seemed very interested in this, and drove about 10 yards on the golf cart before stopping, turning and telling me ‘I’m in.’ With the head coach of the Louisville basketball team on board, Pantaleo has fielded a lot of publicity for the Red Birds. Pitino has discussed his role in the MBA in a press conference, and has had TV announcers bring up the tournament during a Louisville game. Pantaleo has his roster at nine currently, and has two or three members from the rec center he plays at on the team, though he has had some help from Pitino. “One day, Rick comes up to me asking if we have a center. I tell him no, we don’t have a center. Rick responds ‘I’m going to find us a center.’ And we now have 6-foot-7 Hugo Cabrera on our team.” Pantaleo has had help from Louisville with uniforms and Pitino has found the team a practice facility at a gym. The Red Birds have players from Dallas, Louisville, and Miami. The great part of MBA for Pantaleo is it offers players the opportunity to play. “You reach a point where you try to find ways to keep doing it,” said Pantaleo.

Michael Pyatt, Harlem USA, Team Organizer

Finding a way to keep going is what every player who participates in Masters Basketball tries to do. In a competitive tournament, you want to play. Many players will find ways to keep playing, even if it means creating your own team.

Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino (left) was recruited by Joe Pantaleo, Team Organizer, Red Birds (below).

Michael Pyatt is a former professional basketball player who has played in countries such as England, Ireland, and Scotland; while also spending time coaching in Ireland. Pyatt will be participating in the MBA for the first time with his team, Harlem USA. On participating in the tournament, Pyatt says: “We look at it as a way to keep in some sort of shape as we age. It also continues old friendships when you add players to your team.” For Harlem USA, which is based in the New York/New Jersey area with recent additions from Dallas, Texas, the MBA offers yet another avenue of staying active and continuing friendships. “I get inspiration watching 70-year-olds running down the court,” Miller said. “Guys I played in college with went pro and were done at 40. I’m a basketball player. We come together once a year and play basketball. We want to come, play basketball, have fun and go home healthy.” Miller feels the players list gives first year players chances. He started with 12 players, and has four original players with Our Gang now. He fields about three or four new players every year. But Miller sets ground rules for his team: sportsmanship and respect. He’s only had to kick off two players for violating the rules. Finding a way onto a team isn’t, and shouldn’t be a problem for Masters Basketball Association. If you want to play, there are free agency lists. If you can’t work your way into playing time with a certain team, you can create one of your own. For JD Miller, Kenny Hill, Joe Pantaleo and Michael Pyatt, they’re paving the way of creating playing opportunity. Masters Basketball Association continues to grow and prosper, and is always looking for those who want to take on the responsibility of creating their own teams. Team Organizers can recruit anyone who plays basketball, from former pros, to friends at their local rec leagues. To learn more about becoming a team organizer in 2018, contact MBA Tournament Director Steve Nelson.

They Never Stopped

PLAYING

– By Brett Korpi –

Chicago Windy City, 2015 - Dennis O'Brien (#50)

B

efore you read this close your eyes. Imagine yourself on the court right now. You’re in the paint, banging into your opponent, boxing out for a defensive rebound. You get the rebound and pass it out to a waiting teammate. You then sprint down to the opposite end of the court and fight your way through defenders to get down under the basket. Having envisioned that scenario you’re a bit winded, right? Now, imagine yourself over the age of 80 and enduring that for a whole game. Impossible, right? At the Masters Basketball Association Tournament in Coral Springs, eight players over the age of 80 will complete that seemingly unimaginable feat. These eight world class athletes will not only be playing in at least four games during the week-long tournament but will be doing so against younger players competing in the 75+ Division made up of five teams.

They will be competing against 80-year-old Warren Scheider of the American Eagles and 80-year-old Dick Garber of Johnson’s Olympians.

Last year’s runner up in the 75+ Division, Vintage USA, features 81-year-old Ron Linford, who was named to the all-tournament team. The BYU alum finished the tournament sixth in The oldest player the division in scoring, averaging 9.2 in the tournament is points-per-game.

Dennis O’Brien (84) who was born in 1933 8 Players in the tournament are 80 or older 50 Players in the tournament are 75 or older FIVE teams are competing in the 75+ Division

“The 75+ Division in the MBA is truly awe-inspiring for myself and the 400 other athletes that compete in the tournament,” said Bill Watterson, Chairman of Masters Basketball Association. “These gentlemen are the epitome of competitive spirit, desire, and sportsmanship. They truly love the game of basketball.” One team in particular, Chicago Windy City, will be sending five players over the age of 80 on to the court. The team, based out of the Chicagoland area, is led by team organizer, 85-year-old Dennis O’Brien, who is playing in this year’s Masters after only being able to coach the team last year due to a knee replacement. He is joined on Windy City by fellow 80+ club members, 80-year-old John Hunt of Lincoln, Rhode Island, Chicago resident 80-year-old Alan Dennenberg, and another Iona alumnus 81-year-old Bob Swedlow. Daytona native 82-year-old Dick Lenholt rounds out the group.

O’Brien is the oldest player in the MBA, an honor that is a point of pride for him. He has been playing in the tournament for over 30 years. “It’s the best tournament in the country.” O’Brien said of why he keeps coming back. “The competition is top notch and the referees are great. They let us get physical and bang around.”

Having recently moved to Indianapolis to be closer to family, O’Brien lives an active lifestyle. He still works as a consultant in the Chicagoland area and commutes weekly from Indiana. He plays in tournaments throughout the year and has picked up the game of “pickle ball” to stay in shape. Born and raised in the Bronx, O’Brien had to work during his high school years and never played basketball before entering the Navy. While there he picked up the game and has not stopped playing ever since. His fondest memories of that time were when he was stationed at Guantanamo Bay. There his team would play against teams from visiting ships and Marines stationed at the base. After serving four years in the Navy, O’Brien went to Tarleton State College and played one year before transferring to Iona in New York. After college, he began playing for ABC TV in the Industrial League. “We were paid in the television appearances.” O’Brien reminisced. “The more points we scored the more time we got on the Dick Clark and Pat Boone shows.” continued on page 19

A move to Chicago would have O’Brien playing against top competition, including former Globe Trotter Ernie Jones. The love of the game and competition would only grow with age as he would continue to play in men’s league and national 3-on-3 tournaments. Playing with and against players all over the country, O’Brien, who now resides in Indianapolis, would form lifelong friendships. Those relationships would lead players from across the country to join O’Brien on Windy City, Including Florida resident Lenholt. The 6-5 Lenholt, who is a current resident of Ft. Myers and an avid fisherman, had an accomplished amateur career. He was a member of the Seabreeze (Daytona) High School team that won four straight state championships. He was also a four-year starter at Georgia Tech and at the time was a part of the tough Southeastern Conference. He was a member of the famed 1955-56 team known as the “Giant Killers.” The Yellow Jackets earned that nickname by upsetting number one ranked University of Kentucky not once, but twice. Lenholt counts LSU’s Bob Pettit and Kentucky’s Cliff Hagan as his toughest opponents. And he thinks back to those years and the upsets of the Wildcats fondly. “Kentucky had a 129-game home court winning streak going and the week before we had lost to a tiny school in Tennessee (Sewanee). Kentucky thought they were going to laugh us off the court,” Lenholt said.

1933

Dennis O’Brien was born in 1933 and has maintained his health and conditioning to compete again this year. Here’s a sample list of elite pro athletes born in the same year as Dennis. Raymond Berry, NFL Hall of Fame Hubie Brown, NBA Head Coach Ed Charles, MLB, 1969 World Series Champion NY Mets Tito Francona, MLB, 14 yr career Tom Gola, Hall of Fame Basketball Player Forrest Gregg, NFL Hall of Fame Sam Jones, Hall of Fame Basketball Player Johnny Unitas, NFL Hall of Fame

Vintage USA 2016 team: Ron Linford (front row, far left) and Warren Schneider (#11, 2nd row, far left).

Georgia Tech would go on to win 59-58, ending the vaunted streak. Later in the season Kentucky would make the trip to Georgia seeking vengeance. “They were livid!” Lenholt exclaimed, “They brought a television crew thinking they were going to embarrass us.” Georgia Tech would once again beat the Wildcats, this time 65-59. “I don’t think that tape ever made it on television,” Lenholt laughed. “But I did get a copy recently at a Georgia Tech Letterman game.” As much as O’Brien and Lenholt have accomplished in basketball they were never NBA players. Which makes what they and fellow players in their division are doing that much more impressive. When asked why they are still able to play at an elite level and Hall of Famers such as Bill Russell do, both players agreed that it is the fact they never stopped playing. “Never quitting, the desire to compete and the love of the game,” said O’Brien, who plays four days a week and hopes to play as long as he can.“I look forward to playing in the 90+ division when they create it.” Lenholt, who plays three times a week, echoed that statement. “I just never stopped, the older you get the harder it is to pick it back up.” One reason that keeps the fire for the game burning is the camaraderie between not only teammates, but opponents. “To see old friends and to go out and have a good time; that’s what it is all about,” said Lenholt, when asked about what he looks forward to returning to MBA the most. O’Brien thinks back to all the bonds he has formed through the game of basketball and MBA in particular. “You don’t always remember the names,” said O’Brien. But when you see their faces, you remember the games.”
