Tournament Program 2010

May 10-15, 2010 • Coral Springs, Florida a

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME On behalf of the Board of Directors of The Masters Basketball Association, the Sponsors and the Staff, I want to welcome you the 2010 National Senior Championships. This will be the second year that the Championships have been operated by the Masters Basketball Association and we are continuing the tradition of operating a high quality tournament in South Florida. In spite of continued economic stress throughout the country, we are very pleased to have 35 teams entered, coming from all points of the compass, Anchorage to New York and Chicago to Dallas. This appears to be one of our most competitive tournaments in almost every age division. We are very gratified that Team Organizers and players have expressed confidence in our product, and we continue to believe, “If you build it, (with high quality) they will come.” We have built it and once again you are here. The MBA National Senior Championships also offers a wonderful opportunity for corporate sponsorship. Our demographics are in the ages that many corporate sponsors are interested in reaching. We will be launching a major effort over the coming months to reach working agreements with a new group of sponsors. This effort will be critical to guarantee the continued viability of your tournament. We hope to enlist many of you to assist in this effort. As always, if this is your first MBA tournament or if you are a veteran of many, you will have a unique week. You will find the competition every bit as fierce as any you may have experienced at any level of play, yet you will also find a spirit of true sportsmanship and camaraderie. Thanks for coming -- have a great tournament.

Best regards, Kevin J. McNamara Chairman of the Board

BASKETBALL THOUGHTS The Wisdom of John Wooden Age 100, October 2010

WHAT COUNTS “For me it is never simply a case of win or lose, because I do not demand victory. What I demand—and that’s exactly the word—is that each player expend every available ounce of energy to achieve his personal best, to attain competitive greatness as I define it. Victory may be the by-product, but the significance of the score is secondary to the importance of finding out how good you can be. This is only possible with ceaseless, not selective, effort toward that goal.” AS SIMPLE AS ONE, TWO, THREE “My coaching mentors were by my side in spirit during this time. By the early 1960s, I had a devotion to the following three principles and knew how to teach them:” 1. “Condition. Supreme physical condition accompanied by mental and moral conditioning is foremost. Performance diminishes immediately when condition is insufficient.” 2. “Fundamentals. Players must have the ability to properly execute the basics of the game instantaneously without having to stop and think. This concept is taught through relentless repetition of details (and I was the one who determined which details would be perfected).”

JUMP AGAIN

3. “Team Spirit. Most important of all, each young man must be willing and eager to sacrifice personal glory for the good of the group. “One for all and all for one” is a phrase that still send a chill down by spine. The college teams that bring me so much pride are those that demonstrated the highest level of team spirit – the 1948 Indiana State Sycamores and the 1949, 1964, 1970, and 1975 UCLA Bruins. They exhibited a unity that even Coach Piggy Lambert would have admired.” From My Personal Best, Life Lessons from an All-American Journey John Wooden with Steve Jamison

“The Masters Basketball Association tries to model our operations on many of the principles taught by John Wooden. Attention to detail is one of the most important to a well-run tournament.” — Dave Hulett, MBA Tournament Director
