2015.12-2016.02

Maeda Private School of Architecture House Project using the rule Merit Award

This architecture has to begin with one ancient myths in China. Once upon a time, a farmer called Wang went to the mountain to cut the trees. On the mountain, there were two hermits playing the board game. Wang felt very interesting and watching them playing. After they ďŹ nish playing it , he ďŹ nally had realize that he have to go, by that time, the ox handle has already rotten. Yes, the time passed so long so and he hadn t realize it because his experience was good enough to forget the time. From this story, Go is given the other name called Lanca which is from the meaning of forget the time, originally means the ox-handle is rotten. And, this is also the name of architecture of Igo which is called Lanca...

become a brand new typology of architecture.

The next step is creating the volume by using these ten layers. At first, the height must be decided and it is very important for the human scale but also the dynamism of the architecture. Thinking about the floor height is basicly between 2500mm to 3000mm, and finally layer s height is set by 900mm because it may provide two possiblity of the floor height the very short 1800mm and 2700mm. And the skip floor of 900mm difference will bring more actions to the space and therefore become more dynamic. After the height had been set, the next stage is to laminate these ten layers into one. Since the first layer will become the ground level, the height of whole structure is 900×9=8100mm. Because of each layer is based on the record of game in every section, so that the position and size of the floor is different, which result to the space having a lot of skip floors and voids, which enrichen the scenery of the architecture.

RULE: PENROSE TILING WHAT IS PENROSE TILING?

Penrose tiling is named by the British Scientist, Sir Roger Penrose(1931-). He investigated the brand-new tiling pattern which is both reflection symmetry and fivefold rotational symmetry, which seemed impossibile to find before his investigation. After this discovery, It was found that the structure of quasi-crystal, which structual characteristic is between the crystal and amorphous, has the similar pattern of penrose tiling.

WHAT IS QUASI-CRYSTAL? Quasi-Crystal is the material which is ordered but non-periodical. Therefore its characteristic is between the crystal and the amorphous. It is very mysterical material because it was also found in the Mars.

Designing based on the rule in the NATURE. In the nature, there is large number of forms, which is based on hededical rule, or enviromental factor, metamorphosis, etc, which might expand the possibility of spacial or morphological design in architecture. This sort of design method is based on the rule so that TO GENERATE the shapes , not fully based on the arbitral manipulation by the designer which is expectable, and which is called, TO MAKE. This assignment is to establish the method for us to find the nature rules and to architecturalize it.

RULE: PENROSE TILING

(ii) Pentagon

(iv) Repetition in the gold triangle

(vi) Golden Diamond and its replacement by smaller Diamond -2

GEOMETRY

The geometry which is relating with the number 5 has interesting relationship with Golden Rule. There is a triangle called golden triangle, whose three angle is 36° and 72°, or 36°and 108°. And actually, if you draw 2 diagonal lines in pentagon, two second golden triangles and one first golden triangle. In addition, Star is made up of 5 first golden triangle and one pentagon. Which you will realize that the geometry with 5 has the characteristic of repetition. Back to the golden triangle, the ratio between the longer line versus the shorter one is called golden ratio, Φ. The size of Φ is about 1.68, and the size of 1/Φ is about 0.68. Thus, there is formula like: Φ^(n+1) = 1 + Φ^n. From these we could find another repetition. Finally can we back to Penrose tiling. There is first major characteristic of Penrose tiling is repetition in the different size. In penrose tiling, we can change the single tile into four smaller tiles. And naturally, this can be done in the opposite way. The ratio between the size of those two module is Φ. Therefore, the penrose-tiling tesselation in certain plane can be repeated in the different size, which can be infinitely large and small, by Φ.

GEOMETRY

(i) Accute Hexahedral

(ii) Obduce Hexahedral

(iii) Hexagonal Closed Pack and Face-Centered Cubic

GEOMETRY

The focus on Penrose Tiling is the tesselation in the certain surface, which is 2-Dimensional. But as you know that Penrose TIling is the structure of quasi-crystal, which means it has to be 3-Dimensional. By the way, the crystal has several typology of atomic structure, for example, face-centered cubic, hexagonal closed packed up, etc, and so as the quasi-crystal, it has its own filling typology. And it is also the penrose tiling, which is 3-Dimensional. In 2-Dimensional Penrose tiling, it is constructed by two diamonds, which both of them is made up of golden triangle. And, in 3-Dimensional Penrose tiling, there is also two elements, which is Hexahedral, and the first one is called Accute, and the other one is called Obduce. The first one is very steap shape, and the latter one is close to cube. The Bottom/Top surface of both of the hexahedral is diamond which is made up by two golden triangles.

Knot is a loop that passing through itself several times. The space surrounded by the knot is devided and penetrated by knot... Thus, spacial relationship in knot is very contradicting and interesting. So... What if the architecture is created by the knot? How the space would be? How to deďŹ ne the relationship between interior and exterior? What kind of spacial experience people might have? This Work is created by these spacial interests.

Thus it is very hard to create the space by this loop.

The node point is set by the intersection points of

Then, the knot which covers the site

which covers the site three-dimensionally.

Since every node is on the groundlevel of the site, the knot is two-dimensional, but if these points were given the height, the loop will be three-dimensional.To guarantee the space for the people ,the level difference is set by 2500mm. The height is changed in every node point with the rhythm like: up→keep→up→keep→down→keep...

VOLUME It is very hard to discover, or specify the certain volume for the people, since the knot it self is linear, no matter it is three-dimensional or not. But, at the same time, line shows a lot of possibility, as i said in the beginning. As i used the rule above, there is a horyzontal element in the loop, and therefore we can set the volume for human space at there. The volume scale is 2500mm for height and 3000mm for width. And to make the relationship between volumes more abundant, I have adjust the position and the size of each volumes. And finally, the volume plan is decided like the picture on the right side.

RIBBONS How the knot is presented as the real body? It has to be elagant but also strong, and dynamic. Thorugh the several studies, i have decided to use ribbon to present the knot characteristic. It wraps up the volume, becoming the phtysical boundaries, but at the same time, it penetrates the volume which make the simple volume having the ambiguity. This ribbon is very dynamic, and it keeps very close to human body in the space.

To Knot-architecture At last, the volume and the ribbon are combining together. As a zoning plan, the function is set by each volumes and the ribbon connects all of them together. The ribbon is becoming the strongest elements in the space. It might be the strong boundaries which devides the interior and the exterior space. But at the same time, it penetrates the volume so that the devided space is becoming more ambiguous since the elements of interior/exterior is brought following the loops. And the ribbon is connecting all of the volumes in one loop. So, there is will be a intersting coexistence of assemble(as a whole. as one Knot) and discreteness(as individuality, as one room, volume).

CONCEPT

THEME: Interactive Playground The theme for the pavilion is given by Tokyo Design Week every year. During design, we thought what to define the interactive in the language of architecture? Would it be interesting if the space itself is changeable by the people who is in the pavilion, so that the experience in it will be altered in every moment? So the relationship between people and the space is more dynamic, and therefore the interaction between people and the space will be more intersting. In this pavilion, people can move the block freely, and therefore the space itslef will be changing every moment, and the landscape, or in other word, BLOCKSCAPE, will be different based on the idea of people, and of course, the interaction between the other people who is in the pavilion in the same time.

I have strong intrests to the shape of architecture. What is the beautiness? Is there any possibility of shape of architecture in the future society? What can we create?

Especially in China, there is debation towards the architecture nowadays, how should it be? What should be preserved and what should be changed? Then how to consider the tradition, and how to apply it into architectural design?

I believe that architectural body and our human body has certain interaction. How the texture, the atmosphere, the mass, the color, the climate, etc, affect people in the emotional way? It is one of my strongest interests.

Sometimes I felt I belong to both but also neither of them. As designer what should i express and what kind of phylosophy should i have? I would like to face to

Mamushidani Studio

It is very exciting that the background of the project is upcoming Olympic games and the site is Hiyoshi Campus, including Mamushidani where is full of interesting context. I would like to challenge the physical elements which natural landscape and architecture are including. Anyway, it will be a stimulating design studio and i am strongly looking forward to be involved in.

蝮谷

Japanese society is shrinking now, and at the same time the urban area is getting

dense, so that designer have to be aware of the change undergoing and may occur in the future. Through studying about the urban theories in co+labo i would like to

those problems throughout the time in co+labo

Culture

In co+labo culture is one of the important point to be focused on. I can share my experiences in China, but also some ideas which generated from living in the different culture, or as a person who has multi-cultural background. I would like to study about the relationship between architecture and culture.

As a member of SD architecture, more popularity and competetiveness is required, and i would like to make effort to strengthen them. In addition, throughout my three year in Keio Science and Technology, i found that the relationship between SD and SFC is poor, and i would like to create some by students. As i think,

this should be done by bottom-up. I would love to leading Keio architecture to develope, better and better.

理 International 論 Co+labo s international atmosphere is strongly attractive to

me.Because i was surrounded by people from various country in China. Therefore i love to be a member of inter-cultural laboratory. In addtion, several international workshops and lectures is very attractive to me.

Theory of Architecutre

I have strong interests to theory of architecutre, which is the necessary backbone of

creation of architecture. Toward the architecutre in the future, what kind of philosophy

or thoughts could be applied? What kind of idea is required in the future society? I want to read more literature as possible and have several discussion with Mr.Darko, and also, the member of co+labo Radovic.
