Next aims to improve everyday life through cuttingedge robotics. Their products help consumers to navigate and maintain household tasks to make life easier. The design of the new Next Design Research hub is inspired by one of the most crucial instruments for navigation: the compass. This ancient innovation changed how we operate on earth and it’s technology is still used today. Although the compass has transformed throughout history, it has always been a symbol for new discovery and forward-thinking. The Research and Design Hub emodies these concepts to create a space designed for innovation. Similar to the compass, home robotics change the way humans interact with their environment, and it is the nexter’s responsibilty to pioneer the next step in this technology. The space provides a wide range of spaces and amenities for employees to collaborate, research, develop, and create in whichever way works best for them. Universal design principles are a main component of the design in order to ensure that all people have a say in the technology of the future. The spacial arrangement is guided by a central compass, with different amenities in corresponding directions. Just as the compass created an opportunity for new human interaction, the northernmost point of the office is home to the cafe and lounge where all users can join forces for presentations, meetings, or socialization. The NEXT Design and Research Hub is the ideal atmosphere to explore the endless innovative solutions that robotics has to offer.

SITE

The site for NEXT’s Research and Development Hub is located in the heart of Boston’s Innovation District. This area is rapidly becoming a hub for industries like clean tech, information technology, and mobile media. The Innovation District is the perfect location for NEXT to establish themselves as a leader in cutting-edge robotics and intuative design.

BRAND IDENTITY

NEXT is a leading global consumer robot company. Their purpose is to improve everyday living through robotics. The brand embodies the company’s four core values: Humanity Centered, Purpose Driven, Foster Connections, and Think Big and Be the Next. The brand identity is inspired by a compass, an essential tool for new discoveries and relationships. The logo incorporates the company’s core principles to create a design that embodies NEXT’s commitment to the discovery process through technological exploration to foster innovation that provides practical and valuable robot products for the home.

The parti diagram is informed by the cardinal and intercardinal directions found on a compass. The north-facing compass houses the most public spaces while the intercardinal axes serve as pathways between different workspaces and amenities.

Bienenstock Student Design Competition

Niagara Falls, NY | 5000 sf

6 Weeks | Fall 2022

The powerful force of the Niagara River played a vital role in the prosperity of the Rust Belt. Hydroelectricity harnessed from the falls fueled mills and factories during industrialization. Today, a budding fine arts community holds a promising future in these areas. Unveil is centered around the power of art. A constant flow of new ideas and creations electrifies the gallery and its community. Inspired by the impressive rapids and falls, the gallery’s design aims to create a space that supports the constant flow of new creations and exhibitions. Varying displays provide artists with the flexibility to not just showcase individual pieces but rather create an immersive experience. The gallery provides innovative and flexible displays to accommodate all mediums of art and allow users to explore unique exhibits as they constantly change throughout the year. Glass partitions throughout the space allow for works to be unveiled to users as they meander throughout the space. This will encourage exploration, conversation, and inspire other artists showcase their own work in the space, leading to a constant cascade of new works flowing through the space. Ultimately, visitors will flow through a cascade of exhibits that highlight the power of the up-and-coming arts community.

G A L L E R Y

Unveil is located in Niagara Falls, NY. The town is home to a dedicated arts community in need of space where artists and visitors can come together to celebrate the power of art. MATERIAL SELECTION

Material selections take inspiration from Niagara Falls both figuratively and literally. Glass partitions represent falling water through color, form, and transparency. The partitions are inspired by the work of sculptor Danny Lane, whose sculptures resemble waves through the use of ribboned glass. Stone materials such as dolomite and limestone are directly derived from the layers of sedimentary rock which make up Niagara Falls. Dolomite is used as a countertop material in both the gallery and residential kitchens. The limestone floor has been stained blue to create a stream that meanders through the gallery and guides users around the different exhibition spaces.

PRESENTATION SPACE

A variation of glass veils create distinct areas in the gallery. Each area features track lighitng, adequate wall space, and varrying pedistal sizes to accomodate all mediums of art. The partitions are beneficial to curators because they provide flexibilty and customizaton for showcasing work. The stream on the floor compliments the arrangement of partitions to create paths for visitors to follow when exploring the space. Curators can use this to their advantage when designing their ideal viewing experience for the user. As visitors rove through the gallery, works are unveiled to them along the way.

Coworking Office

Roanoke, VA | 7500 sf

5 Weeks | Fall 2021

On Track is a Co-Working Facility in Roanoke, Virginia, built around the city’s rich rail history. The arrival of the railroad in the 1850’s completely transformed the area from rural countryside to a destination for business, transportation, and exploration. For years Roanoke served as a bustling transportation hub and gateway to the American West. Rail lines intertwined through the city created connections to ports and stations far beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the almost 200 years since the railroad was introduced to Roanoke, the city has evolved into much more than a railroad town. The area offers a plethora of outdoor activities, historic attractions, a vibrant arts community, and much more. Although the railway’s function is less active today, it laid the tracks for Roanoke’s ongoing prosperity.

With travel comes extensive opportunities for connection. This coworking space will serve as a hub for a wide range of networks, similar to a railway system. On Track provides a variety of spaces for today’s diverse demographic of employees and the ever-evolving workforce. The space offers an array of workspaces which differ in size, layout, privacy, acoustics, and overall functionality. This allows individuals to station themselves at their own discression. Spacially, all workspaces coverge at the central artery where communal spaces such as the lounge and cafe are located. Tracks in the floor design mimic rail neworks and encourage employees to veer off and utilize the different spaces. These design elements interlock to create an efficient, motivated workplace that keeps employees On Track.

The layout is guided by a central artery which runs through the main collaborative lounge, which is located adjacent to the cafe. All workspaces diverge into different stations, each with their own function. Wayfinding “tracks” integrated into the floor design encourage employees to navigate around the space, collaborate, and socialize.

CAFE + LOUNGE

Located in the heart of downtown Roanoke, The Virginia Museum of Transportation is just a tweleve minute walk from the site of On Track. Sixty years ago, the museum’s original structure served as a freight station, and it has seen multiple renovations over the past sixty years. The museum is known for it’s prestigious exhibits and hospitality. The cafe space was designed to emulate a similar experience through use of refined materials such as marble, brass, and cherry wood. Dramatic accent lighting and grand interventions make the space a focal point of the office. During the day the space will serve as a cafe, and at night a swanky lounge for occupants to mingle.

PASSENGER CARS

The collaborative lounge features three passenger train cars off the main track. These draw inspiration from the cars on display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Their central location allows easy access from anywhere in the space. The ceiling and booths are upholstered with acoustic foam for privacy and noise control. These booths are designed to support a multitude of occasions. During office hours, they are the perfect drop-in spot for informal meetings and quick individual tasks. After hours, the cars transform into a focal point for social interaction and relaxation with co-workers.

MATERIAL SELECTIONS

Roanoke’s rail history is reflected in the design through the use of raw materials such as exposed brick, wood, and metal. Marble, brass, and uphosltery embellish the otherwise industrial interior to curate a sophisticated and captivating space. Integration of these materials into structural elements such as archways, columns, iron partitions, and the passenger cars draws inspiration from famous Beaux Arts and Art Deco train stations across the United States. Furniture selections were made with adaptabilty and functionality at the forefront. Overall, these elements support universal design and accessibilty for the diverse demographic this office serves.
