The PANL Board
Introduction
The PANL Board
18th SONY α
AWARDS
PANL was founded 19 years ago, in 1989, to represent a broad community of editorial, fashion and advertising photographers. It is an extremely visible and highly influential force in Dutch Photography. We gather together every year to celebrate great photography at our PANL Awards prize giving, this year in the magnificent Oude Kerk (Old Church) in the heart of old Amsterdam. The nominated and winning work is showcased in this book has been selected by an independent jury, composed of photographers and those who commission or work intensely with photography. Photography is their daily business and above all their passion. Their choice will hopefully stimulate and surprise you. This year, more than other years, there has been a more outspoken range of criticism by our invited contributors to the jury’s selection. Criticism that has created heated discussion within the PANL Board. On one side, there are some who feel that being too critical works counterproductive and is therefore unnecessary to make a point, while others believe that being sharp and critical should be applauded and encouraged. We collectively believe that the dynamic difference of opinion within PANL reflects a healthy and self-critical organisation. This year has been a year of streamlining our organisation. The increased workload, which is a direct fall out of our increased ambition, has had a direct impact on the back office as well as board members. To address this we have introduced a number of changes that are having a direct effect on the effectiveness and efficiency of both the Board members and the back office. Once again we are fortunate to have a strong supporter in SONY. Their global experience and insights to the world of photography has been an invaluable source of inspiration. We look forward to a flourishing and continuing relationship in the coming years. Like all organisations we have no idea of what the immediate future will bring us. However we in the Board believe that the active participation of our members will continue to make PANL strong and flexible in the coming years. This book is the second in a series of three. Last years Blue Book (17th edition) launched the series. It represented the open and inclusive mentality of our organisation. We strive to bring together the wide and diverse range of work created by our members. This year’s Glow in the Dark, White Book, focuses on the high visibility of our members work in the public domain. Next years book will complete the series.
The PANL board wishes you an illuminating and rewarding read. Eugene Bay, Chairman PANL

The battle for silver and gold A cosmopolitan group gathers together in Spaces on a cold, sunny December morning. For the last few months, this stately building on Amsterdam’s Herengracht has been the meeting place for the PANL jury. Today’s an important day, when the entries for the 2008 competition will be judged for the PANL Sony Alpha Awards #18. It’s no easy task. After the initial digital round, there are still 536 entries shortlisted out of a total of over 1,200 in all categories. In short, the genial mood in which early morning coffee is being drunk will probably have evaporated by this evening. By then, swords will have been crossed and the debate about what is and isn’t ‘beautiful’, ‘innovative’ or quite simply ‘breathtaking’ will have been raging for some time. Many judges, one result. That’s the fervent hope of the PANL organisation, represented on this occasion by Jacqueline van Stiphout, Laura Mars, Carlfried Verwaayen and Annemiek Klijn. But inviting a jury made up of experts from practically all corners of the world inevitably means you will be trying to marshal a wide range of approaches and highly divergent tastes. This will lead to a tough, though hopefully fair and equitable, exchange of views.
The members of the jury are introduced to each other by Jeannette van Zee (De Informatiekamer), who has been given the task of coaxing all these varied opinions towards a shared consensus. There are three photographers: documentary photographer Brian Finke from New York, Kurt Stallaert, a Flemish photographer who describes his own work as ‘surrealistic,’ and Olaf Veltman, a commercial photographer who works from his farm in Drenthe, where he attracts commissions from all over the world. They are joined by Magnus Olsson from Sweden, who has worked in Helsinki, London and Stockholm and has been creative director of Saatchi & Saatchi Nederland for just over two years. Anneke Krul, former coowner of the 020 design agency, now works in Amsterdam as a freelance art director, graphic designer and creative consultant. The international tone of the jury is completed by Kirsten Rendtel, art buyer at Scholz und Friends Berlin. Van Zee, who has been jury coordinator before, outlines the procedure. The group must select approximately 120 photos for inclusion in the PANL book. Wherever possible, they should try to include nominations from all the categories in the interests
of diversity. A chairman must also be chosen to preserve integrity. ‘Can’t we all be chairmen? ’ suggests Krull. ‘Perhaps we don’t need a chairman’, replies Olsson. Nods of agreement - anarchy!
Reconnaissance! The initial round The jury cheerfully begins its work. Several rooms on the ground floor are filled with a series of long tables on which the entries are spread out, all anonymously of course. The group is shown around by Van Zee, whose calm yet alert approach will pilot them through this long, exacting day. To add to the tension, photographer Jacqueline Dersjant follows them all with a large camera, registering each enthusiastic gesture, expression of hesitation or outburst of delight or disgust. For the moment, there’s absolute silence and total concentration, interspersed with a frequent raised eyebrow or cautious smile. The jury takes its work very seriously. Three votes per entry are enough to keep a work in the competition. ‘Raise your hand if you’d like to discuss anything,’ says Van Zee, trying to encourage the initially somewhat reticent group to get a debate going. In the category People Portraits, a series of classic black and white portraits in filmic

style is given five votes. But the other photos attract a draconian response. Photo after photo is rejected. On the other hand, art buyer Kirstel Rendtel is noticeably generous compared to her colleagues. In this category (and in others, as it later proves), her hand goes up again and again. Which is good news in these economically straitened times: clearly, there are still buyers out there for many of these photos. As they walk past the Interior & Exterior category, the jury appears to be slowly but surely melting. Minimalism dominates in this category. The desolate landscapes and old model aircraft parts are proving especially popular. In the ‘Non-Commissioned’ subsection of the Still Life category, a series of reptiles enclosed by hands is the clear favourite. A tree trunk also meets with universal approval. But a photograph of female genitals positioned above a tulip stalk is ruthlessly voted out. ‘Next,’ is the unrelenting verdict and the jury resolutely turns its back on yet another room containing pictures of the children of many of the photographers. Yet before this, the room displaying the Still Life (‘Commissioned’) work causes five hands to promptly rise in response to a photo of a black and white shoe. Olsson asks his colleagues to reconsider. ‘I’ve seen this kind of work so often!’ he cries. He points to another series above it which failed to get through the initial selection round: ‘In that case, this series should also be reconsidered.’ Stallaert invites his colleagues to look more favourably on a photo of a horse they’ve previously rejected. But both arguments fall on deaf ears. Veltman’s lobbying in the Student category is more successful and he manages to win extra support for an interior shot in primary colours which the others have more or less missed. This photo will go on to win a merit award. Almost all hands go up for a black and white series of three portraits. High quality, notes Olsson. Hope for the future! The Lifestyle & Fashion category generates quite a bit of controversy. Two series of photos are heatedly debated. It’s felt that they reflect a desire to ‘over-submit’. One photo in each series is warmly praised but the rest come in for heavy criticism. The jury thinks it’s a real shame that a photo of this kind can’t be judged as a single entry. The discussion results in a series which was initially voted in being taken out of the running after the second round. Krull makes a case for a series

showing women in black clothing. ‘This is the only series of fashion photos in the competition which radiates genuine quality,’ she argues. The photo gets through but falls by the wayside in the final selection round. The jury feels that the Lifestyle & Fashion category is a bit thin this year. ‘I really haven’t seen any work by the quality lifestyle and fashion photographers who are working in the Netherlands today,’ says Krull.
Motivation! The second round The remaining shortlisted work now has to achieve four out of six votes to stay in the running. There’s a great deal at stake: will this work or that make it into the book? Van Zee is hoping for a final result that includes at least three entries in each category. But that turns out to be wishful thinking. The jury, now warning to its task, has other ideas. The Documentary & Life category hasn’t attracted an enormous number of entries, yet it is still striking how few photos are given the thumbs up. A series of wedding photos receives just one vote (Finke’s) while a series of photos of babies, apparently taken in an orphanage in Eastern Europe, only attracts three. ‘Stereotypical,’ opines Krull. ‘No! A really good example of photojournalism!’ counters Finke. The jury agrees: each photo in the series tells a story. Touché. The series gets through. Further on in the Interior & Exterior category, a minimalistic white interior also generates debate. ‘This is too correct,’ remarks Olsson. But only he and Stallaert vote against it, so this entry also appears to have secured its place in the book. Olsson isn’t pleased. ‘The centring is the aesthetics of the idiot, someone told us.’ Duly noted. Krull now shares her burgeoning doubts with the others and withdraws her vote. The photo is rejected. The subject of boyhood dreams clearly appeals to this jury, although the many single photos and series of cars make less of an impression than the pictures of aircraft components. ‘Find as many vehicles in different parts of the street as you can,’ is the dismissive remark that accompanies the voting out of one series of automobile photos. ‘Too stock’ is another merciless comment applied to an over-stylised series in dark tones showing male models and elevators. But Stallaert, who much admires this series, rushes to its defence. He manages to convince the others. A series of photos of plants is reclassified in
the Still Life category at Veltman’s suggestion, and later wins a place in the book. In the People & Portraits area, the jury spends a long time considering the merits of a portrait of film-maker Paul Verhoeven. Eventually it’s voted down, much to the disappointment of Veltman, who immediately afterwards is galled to see a rather formal portrait of a soldier next to a pot plant voted in. ‘Those days are over,’ he says firmly. ‘Portraits should say more about the person they portray. And it requires talent to portray a major ego like Paul Verhoeven in this way’. Krull disagrees, saying she’s seen too many of this kind of portrait. Stallaert thinks Verhoeven is acting on the photo: ‘The soldier portrait is far more natural and therefore stronger.’ In the end, though, neither photo makes it to the next round. Van Zee suggests it might be time for lunch, but the jury’s now got the bit between its teeth and wants to go on. The next category awaiting consideration is Student Work. The ‘graphic’ black and white series of three moving portraits gets a unanimous ‘go’. It’s a historic moment - the first time today that the entire jury has been unanimous. ‘I like the student work!’ they all say, somewhat surprised. Work by no less than eight young photographers is included in the book, including four series. Before lunch, the remaining work in the People & Portraits (‘Non-Commissioned’) category is subjected to closer inspection. ‘A rip-off’, ‘Too easy’ but also ‘Most uncomfortable but that’s good’ and ‘So emotional’ are just a few of the comments made. A series of photos of young gymnasts (presumably taking part in a competition given the numbers on their gym slips) attracts widespread approval. An image of a boy with a hare lip and vulnerable expression also gains many votes. Clearly, hunger hasn’t yet dampened interest in the job in hand. The jury decides to complete its discussion of the photos in the other series which still require further consideration. In the Still Life (‘NonCommissioned’) category, it decides to allow the reptiles series to go through. > lees verder op pagina 232

However, Krull fails to get ‘her’ series of five fashion photos passed. But the jury’s hands shoot up for a still life showing two young girls’ legs encased in plaster peeping out from under a net curtain. ‘It takes the subject in another direction,’ says Stallaert approvingly. ‘It has something soft,’ adds Krull. ‘Formally it is beautiful,’ puts in Finke cautiously. The aircraft parts also get a unanimous vote.
War! The final round After lunch, Jeannette van Zee announces that 99 entries have made it through from the previous selection rounds. It’s now time for each jury member to make their own personal selections. They can choose an entire series, a single work or even one photo from a series. Each member also has a maximum of three wild cards which they can use to get work brought back into the arena. Veltman uses one of his to secure an entry for the Student Work category. ‘I could see a Gucci logo on it,’ he says in endorsement of a photo of a young female model wearing lip gloss. He’s supported by a majority vote and the photo makes it into the book. After a short break in which everyone presents his or her own personal choices (see box), it’s finally time to select the work that will win the top prizes, including the coveted PANL Award. Olsson puts in a bid for his personal choice: the wall series. During the voting round, this was selected for silver, but Olssen thinks it deserves gold. Veltman says teasingly: ‘We always knew there was something wrong with art directors.’ But Olsson isn’t put off: ‘It’s uncomfortable and new. Flawless, from a crafting point of view. The whole series! It unites design, photography and art-
Now the heavy guns are wheeled in. The merits and demerits of each photo are discussed in minute detail – resulting in their promotion to a higher award category or, in the worst case, a demotion. Finke, for example, wants the gymnast series to win gold and the portrait of the boy with a hare lip to be given silver. ‘I didn’t even vote for the gymnasts,’ counters Olsson. ‘It’s done in a right way, but it doesn’t move things forward.’ Eventually, each of these finalists is awarded silver. But why gold for the reptiles series when nothing else in this category has been awarded anything? The jury decides to take drastic measures and gives it a ‘merit’ instead. A series of photos of flowers, which was initially set to walk away with silver, is now given only an ‘honourable mention’. During the final round of voting, emotions either reach fever pitch or sink without trace. A photo of a boy at a carwash, which was initially crowned with a gold, sparks off a lively squabble. ‘Maybe it’s a boy thing,’ comments an incredulous female jury member. Veltman replies jokingly: ‘If you can’t get sex into the book, you should at least get a car in’. But four votes against two means the photo now only gets an ‘honourable mention’. In the Lifestyle & Fashion (‘Non-Commissioned’) category, too, in which only two photos have survived the pruning exercise, gold is now reduced to a ‘merit’ award (for the girls’ legs showing beneath the net curtain) and silver is demoted to an ‘honourable mention’ (dog in a collar). One of Veltman’s favourites, the filmic black and white series of young people (People & Portraits, ‘Commissioned’), doesn’t get any marks from Krull. She wins over a fellow jury member so now it’s four against two. One of the four photos is also regarded as less good, so the series gets a ‘merit’ rather than a silver. But there’s very little dissent about what to award the Student Work category. Everyone agrees the black and white series deserves gold. The judging is now drawing to an end. All the proposed entries for gold, silver and ‘merit’ awards are laid next to each other. This is the jury’s final opportunity to make a pitch to upgrade or downgrade the material. Finke puts forward an argument for awarding gold to the gymnast series, which
is currently down for a silver. He gets the rest of the jury to agree. This prompts Olsson to revive the case in favour of ‘his’ wall series (People & Portraits): ‘The gymnasts are fairly traditional, after all. As a signal, it would be rock & roll to say that you can make portraits like that but,’ indicating the wall series, ‘also like that.’ The votes are cast. Veltman: ‘It’s a commissioned work. Someone’s breathing down the photographer’s neck, after all. If we award gold to the wall, we’ve also got to give gold to the gymnasts.’ And that’s eventually what happens. There’s also universal consensus about the overall PA NL Award, which is to go to the series of four photos of old aircraft parts in a hangar. But despite all his ardent pleas, Olsson’s wall series remains contentious. At the jury’s request, PA NL is asked to find out whether the photos satisfy the competition criteria, for example in terms of copyrights. Further enquiries at Pictoright unfortunately reveal that the series has to be disqualified because the photographer doesn’t own the full copyright. This infringes both copyright laws and the entry rules governing the PA N L Awards. In the end, then, the final tally of awards for the PA NL 2008 edition is four golds, four silvers and 15 ‘merits’. All in all, a respectable haul. ●

Personal Choices
Anneke Krull Single photo, Interior & Exterior, Commissioned: girl playing in a concrete jungle. ‘I see it as a fashion photo - by way of compensation, since so little good work was entered in the Fashion & Lifestyle category. I think the contrast between the rigid architectonic environment and the playful little girl works very well. It’s a razor-sharp photo in which the colours make her spring out at the viewer. And then there’s the threatening sky; there’s an entire story in this picture. I can imagine what the rest of the series might look like, if there were one.’
Magnus Olsson Series of 5 photos in People/Portraits, Non-Commissioned: photos of walls with peeling black and white posters of Chinese people and characters. ‘It wasn’t difficult to choose. They struck me right away. It feels big. It’s got scale. A lovely idea: doing portraits in a new way. It’s the strong visual impact of the work. Perhaps it’s because I’m in advertising. The whole thing is very clear.’
Kirsten Rendtel Single photo; People & Portraits, Non-Commissioned: portrait of a boy. ‘Very sensitive. I like the fact that the photographer was able to catch the confidence of an adolescent. Normally they try to look very cool and grown-up, but he has a remarkable vulnerability. The photographer has managed to get in to this and gives us a glimpse inside the boy.’
Kurt Stallaert Series of 4 photos in Interior & Exterior, Non-Commissioned: aircraft parts in a hangar. ‘I can find almost no flaws or disruptive elements in this photo series. The atmosphere, the composition, it’s all perfect. I don’t have any sense that it’s been staged. It’s basic, apart from the extra light that’s been used, but which doesn’t disturb the purity of the scene. There’s a story behind it, it makes you wish the aircraft could speak. I’m passionate about planes: I myself fly a Piper Lance, a light aircraft built in 1979.’
Brian Finke Series of 4 photos in Interior & Exterior, Non-Commissioned: aircraft parts in a hangar. ‘These aesthetically enticing pictures struck me as early as the first voting round. I love the mystery that surrounds them. They make me curious about the story that is created by the stillness. I want to go there and see them for myself. For me, the choice was between these photos and the girls with their different emotions and the black gymslips. I can keep looking at them. But the same is true of the planes. The spotlight, the metal, the broken glass, the texture. Where is this place? Why are these bits and pieces of planes being kept?’
Olaf Veltman People & Portraits, Commissioned: young Muslim woman with blue hijab. ‘I love this picture of a Muslim woman. And in combination with the series of gymnast photos; they must be by the same photographer. But in that series there was one photo I didn’t think was as good as the rest. This photo was more difficult to make, and unlike the gymnasts, it was commissioned. It’s so simple and retiring. It really grabbed me: the girl almost looks past or through you, as if you weren’t there. The simplicity and use of colours is very striking. I could tell you all about the aircraft series, but in my opinion it deserved silver, not gold.’
