Matt Tucker OUGD303 — Brief 10. Woodwork Exhibition The Fruits of Our Labour
Brief —
The initial brief was to create a piece of promotional material for the Woodwork end of year show. After some discussion with the department we also discovered that they needed a yearbook but didn’t have a budget to get a commercial print job. The purpose of the book was purely for the individuals to take home as a reminder of the course. To combat the issue of a lack of budget we are using a print to order system such as blurb meaning the individuals can order the books if they wish to buy them.
Concept —
The Fruits of ones labour transfers to the rewards for hard work, which felt appropriate for an exhibition, particularly that of a woodwork course which requires intensive and physically straining labour to produce their work.
Promotion —
For the event there needed to be a piece of print that showcased all of the individuals work and provided contact information for the course in general. The poster will be Riso Printed from a printers based in Leeds using two colours to save on costs and allow a larger budget for the setting up of the event. The flyers will also be riso-printed on an off white stock, two colour, then triplexed with some grey board in the middle to add value to the print.

Yearbook /Catalogue —
The yearbook also embodies the concept of the exhibition using the first section of the publication as a visual diary of the ‘labour’ with shots of students creating their projects to be exhibited at the end of year show. The second chapter features a showcase of each individuals work, with a page allocated to contact information and a full bleed image. The consecutive pages feature double page spreads of each indivduals chosen pieces of work. This chapter is titled the fruits, as a refrence to the event and is styles in the same way as the poster and cover of the publication with ‘our labour’ hidden. The yearbook will not be complete until 3 days after hand in when the students are having the rest of their FMP photographed. This is when we will put the order in for the 9 copies of the publication. Each book will cost around £9.00 each to produce. The publications will also come with a wrap around cover to match the rest of the branding for the identity. We did order a proof up but unfortunatly it didn’t arrive in time for the hand in. Again the publication will be created and be included in my portfolio post FMP hand in.

I am a London based designer maker with strong interests in freehand artistic / sculptural work. Using interpretations of natural form in my work has allowed me to create interesting fluid designs that have a basis of organic growth, but are not objects found in nature.

As we are working with the woodwork department, it means we can be slightly more adventurous with the signage as they have the equipment to make it all. The signage will use a simple system of boards and MDF that hold the users portfolio and short statement about the individual. They will vary in height depending on what sort of product they are next to and always stand off the floor making them easier to read and to save people straining to lean down and read the information. The boards will be made from MDF sprayed white, and feature a small slit where the students portfolios can be placed. This maintains the relationship between the students exhibited product and the rest of their works. Previous years have had the portfolios laid out on a separate table and students felt this wasn’t the most functional approach possible. There will also be large vinyl cut letters of the name of the event. These will be stuck to the large white spaces behind the products in black and white as not to conflict with the furniture. The signage will be created over the next few weeks before the exhibition and be painted in the same style as the branding for the rest of the event.
