Shareable Shortbread For your next cookie exchange or other holiday event that finds you scrambling for a unique hostess gift, consider these shortbreads adorned with some beauty from local flower farm Petaloom Florals, pink ‘alaea salt, and some added decadence — white chocolate.

Ingredients (Makes 18 cookies)

Instructions

Garnish

2. Using 1 ½ tablespoon size scoop, scoop dough onto a greased cookie sheet, pressing to make a shallow divot in the middle of each cookie. Bake cookies at 350ºF for 10–12 minutes, until bottoms are golden brown. Cool completely.

1 cup unsalted European butter, room temperature ¼ cup granulated sugar 1 tsp real vanilla extract 2 cups all purpose flour ¼ tsp salt 1 cup sweetened flaked coconut ½ cup crushed raw macadamia nuts

8 oz white chocolate chips Edible flower petals (pictured here are dianthus) Pink Hawaiian Salt crystals (‘alaea)

1. Cream together sugar, butter and vanilla. Sift separately flour and salt. Add to the creamed butter mixture, then add coconut and macadamia nuts.

3. To decorate, drizzle melted white chocolate over cookies (place chips in a microsafe bowl and microwave in 20-second increments until completely melted). Place flower petals gently on still warm chocolate and dust with ‘alaea salt crystals. Chill to set up. 4. To gift, place each cookie in a paper cupcake wrapper — individually, not stacked — in a decorative tin. Maja Liotta is a private chef and is passionate about food, farms, foraging and teaching. Our Keiki PRAYER

Saying Grace Expressing appreciation for a nourishing meal has been practiced by people of all cultures and faiths throughout history. Saying grace not only leads to a more present and pleasant experience, but also helps us appreciate the effort that goes into preparing a meal from farm to table. Before breaking bread with your family or friends, consider using one of these ways to show gratitude. Ho‘onani Ho‘onani i ka Makua mau Ke Keiki me ka ‘Uhane nō Ke Akua mau, ho‘omaika‘i pū
Ko kēia ao ko kēlā ao. Kūnou ha‘aha‘a ko ka honua Nō uliuli o ke kai Na ‘ano lani kau hōkū Nā nani o ka ‘ōnaeao ‘Āmene Let us give praise to the eternal Father,
To the Son and to the Holy Ghost.
To God everlasting, let there ring praise
Both in this world as well as the kingdom All the earth bows in tribute,
As do the riches of the sea,
 The celestials among the stars
And the splendors of the universe. Amen.

Buddhist Meal Gatha We receive this food in gratitude to all beings
who have helped to bring it to our table,
and vow to respond in turn to those in need
with wisdom and compassion.
Sanskrit Blessing The food is Brahma (creative energy). Its essence is Vishnu (preservative energy). The eater is Shiva (destructive energy). No sickness due to food can come to one who eats with this knowledge.
Zen Blessing from Thich Nhat Hanh In this plate of food,
I see the entire universe supporting my existence.
Variation on a Native American Thanksgiving We give thanks for the plants and animals
who have given themselves so that we can enjoy this meal together.
We also give thanks for our friends and family who have traveled here today.
May this meal bring us strength and health.
Secular Mealtime Prayer Dear earth who gives to us this food.
Dear sun who makes it ripe and good.
Sun above and earth below,
our loving thanks to you we show.
Blessings on our meal.
Saying grace is a heart-felt, conscious practice that brings friends and family together in a sacred space. Whether they are said in the name of a faith or not, words full of gratitude are a beautiful beginning to any meal.—RG

Our Keiki THE PRESENT MOMENT

Mindfulness & Emotional Intelligence BY EMMANUELLE BETHAM

E

motional intelligence—the ability to recognize and manage your and others’ emotions—is key to acquiring complementary soft skills such as team-playing, adaptability, active listening, and happy learning. To help your child develop emotional intelligence, practice mindfulness with them. This means helping them to be present and notice the choices available to them in any given situation to make good decisions. Here’s what you can do daily to help your child (and yourself) develop mindfulness and emotional intelligence skills: • Take time to just be in the moment. Stop doing, remembering or planning. Sit or lie down somewhere quiet and comfortable, away from devices and other distractions. • Ask your child how they are feeling. Make a point of acknowledging their emotions (all feelings are okay) and associated thoughts. This may be an opportunity to identify any issues and to discuss what your child wants to happen. • Then direct your child to go deeper within: “Close your eyes and feel any movements, noises, colors, smells, etc. inside your body.” • Next, have them focus their attention on their immediate surroundings: “Observe the shapes and colors around you; feel and smell the air that’s touching you; notice the ground that’s supporting you; listen to noises nearby.”

• After doing that, help them pay attention to the bigger space around them, progressively acknowledging everything they can perceive from nearby to very far away. If and when this is difficult for your child, read a short story together. Then, invite your child to report and expand by way of reflection and discussion: • Ask your child to tell and interpret the story in their own words. • Help them distinguish between what the story actually says and what it means to them. • Look at the illustrations, and see how verbal and non-verbal language may be used to convey messages. • Give examples of how a certain concept in the story may apply to each of you in your life. • See if your child can describe different scenarios to convey the same messages. • Dramatize and/or role-play relevant scenarios or situations. • Make it fun!

Emmanuelle Betham is author of the I realise series which aims to help its readers develop emotional intelligence and mindfulness. It is the British spelling of ‘realize’, from the French ‘réaliser’, meaning both to discover and to accomplish. For more information, visit LanguageCommunicationCoaching.com.

Our Keiki MOVEMENT

Get the Wiggles Out Getting the wiggles out is an important element of any child’s life. But in today’s device-centric world, encouraging keiki to move their bodies is even more vital for their well-being and for their caregivers! Read on if you’re looking for ideas to inspire your child to release tension, take a break from schoolwork, or just exercise. Get some air…on your trampoline! Jumping on your backyard trampoline is an excellent way to release pent-up physical energy. A light cardio brings up the heart rate and circulates the blood. Why not join your keiki in the fun and chase them around in circles, or simply hold hands and jump together? As long as the zipper on the safety net is closed you are good to jump to your heart’s content. Play hopscotch. Grab some colorful chalk and head to a paved or cemented stretch on your driveway. Write numbers in each square or customize your own hopscotch with pictures or letters. The simple activity of jumping and hopping might prove to be the perfect reinvigorating break for your toddler or keiki. Collect shells. Take advantage of the beautiful beaches around Maui with a shell collecting challenge. Gather some buckets of your choice, and set a goal for types or amounts of shells to be collected. To pick up the pace, set a timer and have kids race around in teams. At the end of the activity, feel free to leave the shells where they belong – on our beaches!

Dance to the music. Put on your keiki’s favorite music and let them dance (and sing) to get the wiggles out. As they swing their hips and pump their fists to the rhythm, their coordination and aerobic fitness also get a workout. Play “Tutu Says.” Just like Simon Says, this fun, Hawaiian version can be played inside or outdoors. Want to make it more fun and introduce more movement? Tutu might say “run back and forth five times to the nearest mango tree” in your yard. Choose a variety of commands that involve movement, and let Tutu do all the saying! Help your keiki become calm and centered by making time for some physical movement. Whether it’s a simple game in the yard, on the beach, or indoors, all it takes is a little creativity and thought to make a difference in their day. —RG

Our Keiki SCHOOL NEWS

New Renovations at Roots School 740 HAIKU RD., HAIKU Roots School recently completed major renovations of its Preschool and K-2nd grade classrooms. Located on Haiku Road in the heart of Haiku, Roots School is an independent private school serving children from Preschool to 5th grade. Through the $1 million Growing Roots Capital Campaign, the school has been raising funds to remodel the campus, which includes the 68-year-old main building. Phase I of renovations was completed in Summer 2020, which included the Preschool classroom, K-2nd grade classroom, Preschool bathrooms, and administrative offices. Phase II will happen in Summer 2021 and will include an additional classroom, a formal front entrance, and new bathrooms. Phase III will happen in Summer 2022 and will include additional classroom spaces. “We are so grateful to the many donors who helped make this possible, including the Atherton Family Foundation, Samuel N. & Mary Castle Foundation, a generous anonymous donor, and the wonderful and incredibly generous Nuestro Futuro Foundation,” said Head of School Melita

Charan. “These new spaces are sparkling new, easy to maintain, and allow for proper physical distancing requirements.” Roots School offers small class sizes; multi-age classrooms; a focus on social and emotional learning in addition to academics; arts-integrated, project-based curriculum; and a tuition aid program. Roots School is open for safe, in-person learning, and has a limited number of spaces available in its 3rd–5th grade class. For more information, email office@rootsmaui.org, call 250-7988, or visit rootsmaui.org.

Outdoor Learning at Carden Academy 55 MAKA’ENA PL., PUKALANI At Carden Academy in Pukalani, outdoor learning has been a key part of returning to campus safely. With the help of parent volunteers, Carden spent the summer preparing outdoor spaces, including adding a roof to the garden pavilion, adding a cement slab to the Pre-K pavilion, and purchasing camp chairs for every student. Now, outdoor classrooms are shared between two grades with a split schedule that allows elementary students to spend more than half their school days outside. All outdoor classrooms are covered to provide protection from the sun and weather. And with seating spaced six feet apart, keiki can take their masks off while outside. Indoor classrooms are sanitized while students are out.

“We are so fortunate to live on Maui where we can be outside year round,” says Head of School Kristi Bendon. “Having these outdoor classroom spaces means we can take advantage of that opportunity and keep keiki safe while keeping up with academic learning.”

Emergency Room Preparedness BY MAUI HEALTH A patient recently arrived at the emergency department with abdominal pain. He had been suffering for a week but delayed seeking help — in part because he was afraid of COVID-19. Because of the delay, his problem was much more difficult to treat. Since the start of the pandemic, we have seen many patients avoid coming to the hospital for medical emergencies, including heart attacks and strokes. Some are afraid of the virus; others have heard the hospital is full. Unfortunately, these delays can be life altering or even life threatening. The fact is Maui Memorial Medical Center’s emergency room is the safest place to be if you are having a medical emergency. Our emergency room visits per day are still below normal, so we have plenty of capacity to care for people right now. We are prepared for any potential surge of COVID-19, including any surge that may arrive with the return of visitors to the island.

We screen and temperature-check everyone arriving at the ER regardless of symptoms and anyone with suspicious symptoms is immediately isolated. Patients who are not severely ill are evaluated in an outdoor tent. Visitor policy restrictions are still in effect to further minimize community traffic and potential exposure. The strict masking policy throughout the hospital requires every individual, including patients, to be masked at all times. In addition, the hospital has more than enough Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and our guidelines for use are above and beyond Centers for Disease Control and Department of Health recommendations. This includes the use of N95 masks throughout the ER on every patient regardless of COVID status. The pandemic is our new reality and it is important that we never let our guard down. We are prepared and will remain ready for any potential surge, just as we have done before. In the meantime, if you or a loved one is having a medical emergency, do not delay your care – seek help immediately. The ER is safe and our health care team of experts is ready to care for you. Please visit www.mauihealth.org/safe for more information.

Baby Keiki ORAL CARE

What to Expect at Baby’s First Visit to The Dentist BY HAWAII DENTAL SERVICE (HDS)

The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child should go to the dentist within six months of getting their first tooth – and no later than their first birthday. Hawaii Dental Service (HDS) shares what your dentist will do at your baby’s first visit: Check your child for cavities. Hawaii has the highest prevalence of tooth decay in the nation. Show how you brush and floss your baby’s teeth. There are different types of toothbrushes for baby, depending on their comfort level. Flossing can come later once teeth have sprouted. Teach you about food, drinks, and habits that can cause cavities. Proper nutrition is a critical part of taking care of your baby’s oral health. Avoid foods with excess sugar, and do not let the baby fall asleep while drinking milk or formula. Talk about fluoride and how it can prevent cavities. Hawaii doesn’t have fluoride in their water supply, but that’s ok – there are many ways for your baby to get fluoride including topical fluoride varnish, supplements, and more. Fluoride is a safe way to prevent cavities, it makes teeth stronger and more resistant to acid caused by eating sugary foods and drinks.

Check your child’s bite, growth, and development. Early detection of any potential problems allows you more options to address them. Your child’s dentist can provide guidance on proper pacifier and milk bottle use for babies and how to prevent crooked teeth and baby bottle tooth decay. Give you information to prevent accidents as your baby grows. Dentists can offer new parents a lot of tips on how to care for baby’s teeth; so, ask questions! Healthy baby teeth are critical to a child’s early physical, social and emotional development – they maintain proper spacing in the jaw and between teeth until the adult teeth are ready to grow in, foster good nutrition through proper chewing, aid in speech development and build self-esteem by providing a healthy smile. Introducing your little one to good oral hygiene habits and regular visits to their dentist at an early age is the best way they can learn to Live Well, Smile More.

Baby Keiki SOOTHING TIPS

Calm a Fussy Baby A crying baby can be distressing to parents and caregivers; they may feel just as distressed as the crying baby. But don’t lose hope; there are many different ways to help a baby calm down. And it might just help to remember some of the following information. A well-fed baby is a happy baby. Make sure your baby’s basic need for food is met,
whether it’s breast milk or formula. Once you tune into your baby’s eating habits, you’ll get to know how often they need feeding. Remember that it’s different for all babies, so don’t feel like there’s necessarily something wrong or that you’re a failure as a parent, if your infant wants feeding more or less than what a book may say. A pacifier can soothe your baby. Some babies learn to self soothe early on in their lives, but if you find your baby is fussy and cries a lot, consider introducing a pacifier to them. They come in all shapes and sizes, so if they reject the first one, try another brand. Water can be calming and healing to a baby. While bathing your baby may be less convenient than a quick fix like a pacifier, for example, bathing your baby is a wonderful way to connect with your infant. If it calms you down too, then you’ll both benefit from this simple solution.

Rocking back and forth can give comfort to an unhappy baby. For this reason, it is a favorite of many mothers and fathers. The key is to find out what works for your baby. Your baby might like a slow gentle rocking motion, or perhaps your baby prefers an infant swing rather than the rocking chair. Experiment with different methods to find the best fit for your baby’s needs. Sound can be soothing to your baby. Babies are surrounded by the sound of blood flowing as they grow in the womb, but once they are born that constant noise is taken away from them. To replicate this sound, try making a “shush” noise near their ear, as suggested by Dr. Harvey Karp. He says, “the best way to imitate these magic sounds is white noise.” Trying to soothe a fussy baby needn’t be stressful and disheartening. As the caregiver, remember to take a deep breath and calmly consider some basic comforting techniques. Of course, if your gut tells you something more serious is going on, contact your pediatrician! —RG

Baby Keiki BIG FEELINGS

When Your Child is Worrying BY KIEGAN BLAKE, O.T.

D

uring these times of uncertainty, you want to give your child an internal experience of safety and security amidst the changes that are going on around him. You also want to validate your child’s feelings, as her worries are real, even when there is no imminent danger. Here are some tips: • Maintain your morning and evening routines. These bookends of the day create predictability for your child. • Exercise. Your child is carrying his worry inside his body and so create a daily outlet to discharge his worries. • Create fun. Laughter and giggling are also wonderful outlets. • Include a daily practice to manage your own worries. It is important that you feel centered and regulated for your child. • Take turns talking about what is going well and what is “tricky”. You model talking about a range of emotions, which creates a balanced experience of both positive and tricky experiences, and your child will enjoy hearing yours.

• Have at least 2 “quiet” times each day in a cozy space, where you do activities such as reading, drawing or audio book. Your child’s body will benefit from support to calm down and stay settled internally. • Share pleasurable activities with your child. When your child feels close to you, she is likely to feel more secure and more emotionally calm. • When your child is telling you about his worry, listen and “hold the space” for that emotion. Resist the urge to minimize it, solve it or talk your child out of it. It is important that he feels understood. • Empathize. “Hmmm, I can see how you’d be thinking about that” • Deep breaths. It is the fastest way to calm your child’s body. Drinking water slows down your child’s breaths. You can practice blowing up a balloon or blowing bubbles to make big breaths fun. • Problem solve together. “Hmmm, I wonder what we could do…” Listen and see what she comes up with. Ponder the possibilities together. • If your child has persistent worries, consider seeing a child counselor. Giving From Your Garden Free to low-cost holiday gift ideas from your yard or garden As the holiday season approaches, we are thinking of so many fun and creative ways to utilize our gardens and the abundance of nature to create unique gifts for those we love. A gift from the garden is a gift from the heart; it’s something that shows thought, care and consideration. It can be as simple as a freshly picked bouquet of flowers, or an intricately woven or decorated wreath. Here are some of our favorite ideas for gifts that can be given from the garden that are free or very low cost to make.

Custom Seed Packets Are any of your favorite plants in the garden going to seed? Have the kids go on a seed scavenger hunt to collect the seeds and then design and make their own custom seed packets for gifting! You can find free printable seed packet designs online, or challenge the kids to get creative with recycled paper by trying different folding techniques. Be sure your seeds are completely dry before packaging.

Infused Sugar or Salt Infusing the fresh flavors of your garden into sugar or salt is such a great way to share your garden with your friends and family. Be sure your herbs are completely dry before adding. Seal in an airtight jar and let sit for one week before gifting, to be sure the sugar or salt has taken on the full flavor and aroma of the herb. Ratio: Approximately 1 teaspoon dried herbs (one herb, or a combination) to 1/4 cup sugar/salt. Try with salt: Rosemary, Sage, Fennel, Basil, Oregano, Thyme Try with sugar: Lavender, Lemongrass, Lemon balm, Mint, Dried Citrus Peel, Dried Coconut

Tea Blends Pick and dry fresh herbs that you have growing in your garden and package them as tea! You can use just one plant, like mint or lemongrass, or mix and match herbs to make different blends. Plants to use for tea can include: mint, chamomile, lavender, lemongrass, hibiscus flowers, mamaki, echinacea, mugwort, lemon balm, or catnip. You can place these loose blends in small recycled glass jars or make your own tea bags using cheesecloth or coffee filters. • Cheesecloth: Cut into a square, place one teaspoon of tea in center, gather edges, and tie with string. Attach a homemade tag or something creative to the end of the string, like a bead or a piece of seaglass. • Coffee Filter: Cut the sides off of a coffee filter so it creates a rectangle. Place loose leaf tea on the filter. Fold both long sides into the middle. Fold the filter in half. Trim the top. Fold the top corners down. Staple a string to the top folds of the packet.

Garden Giftwrapping To put the finishing touch on your gift, have the kids create homemade cards using leaf rubbings. By placing a leaf under white paper and gently rubbing a crayon sideways across the paper, it will transfer the leaf pattern onto the

paper. This final thoughtful gesture will be sure to put a smile on your loved one’s face. And don’t forget: banana and ti leaves work great as a “wrapping paper!” Our gardens and the land around us provide so much. Show those you care about this holiday season that you were thinking of them by gifting these simple, thoughtful gifts! Grow Some Good is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating hands-on, outdoor learning experiences that cultivate curiosity about natural life cycles, connect students to their food sources, and inspire better nutrition choices. Recharge for the New Year We’ve just spent the better part of this year being battered to our core. Name anything — work, school, family, health, community—and it’s likely been turned upside down. With the new year, come new beginnings and a perfect time to reclaim our lives. Here are ways to recharge for the new year: Seek out the good stuff that fills you up. Dial up old friends that know you better than anyone. Pursue a dream. Cozy up with a great book. Remember those interests and routines you set aside amid the chaotic year and fight hard to make time and space for them. Find your way back to wellness. If you’ve spent the pandemic shoveling ice cream in your mouth, you’re not alone. When you’re ready to pull out of your dairy-induced coma, bring back the good choices that will keep you healthy and strong into the new year. Learn a dance. Dancing in your kitchen is always a good idea. But, when was the last time you tried to follow choreography? Challenge

yourself to dive into it and get your mind and body moving again. Try YouTube for ideas or sign up for a class on the island. Shout your heart out. A friend recently asked on social media, “HIT YOUR CAPS AND TELL ME WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND.” Expressing our frustrations and laughing among friends can do wonders for healing. Plan a trip. Travel is transformative. Although it may seem crazy right now, there are options depending on your level of comfort. Plan a staycation. Go camping. Explore anything that pulls you out of your routine and into a brand new perspective. Find your inner kid. That unabashed, curious and playful state does wonders for a stressed mind and depleted body. Build a gigantic sand castle. Jump on the trampoline. Release yourself from overthinking and steal away with your kid’s Lego set. Make something. There’s nothing more satisfying than creating something with your hands. Plant a container garden. Draft a pattern for a dress. Bake a triple layer cake. Bringing something to life in turn brings you to life. The new year is upon us, and like each new day, anything is possible.

‘Ohana NEW TRADITIONS

Honoring Our Kupuna BY BRITTANY C. SMITH

T

he holidays are approaching, and we are looking forward to the warmth of connecting with family and friends; however, our gatherings may look different this year. For my family there will be fewer guests and no visits from our parents or grandparents. In lieu of this, we decided to bring back the tradition of honoring our elders during the holiday season. How will we do this without them physically being in our home? I decided to designate a space in our home to display photos of our elders with fresh flowers, a candle and incense. Usually, this spot in our home displays our menorah or, later in the season, a nativity. This year, among the holly and the candies will be heartwarming photos of our grand relatives. Already, since the idea was sparked, our house is joyfully sharing old family stories and I noticed there is a fresh, light feeling around our home. Initially I thought we would feel sadness about the absence of our family; and while we

still do, there is a stronger emotion emerging now that we have committed to honoring our elders from afar. We are inspired. We are finding new ways to say thank you to our kupuna, and it is fun. I encourage you and your family to try something similar. Place any memento that reminds you of your relatives (photo, card, etc.) in a spot where everyone in the family can enjoy it. Make a habit of acknowledging this spot by bowing, lighting a candle, saying a prayer, or offering a simple nod. You will notice a positive change in your mood and your house will feel harmonized because it is refreshing to focus our attention on the meaningful parts of our lives. This is especially important now, when our attention is pulled by the material, consumer-driven focus of celebrating the end-of-theyear holidays. Let’s deepen our connection this year with what is most important — our families. Create a tradition of honoring your elders during the holiday season and let 2020 be a year of happy memories. Whether through donations, volunteer work, or just providing a shoulder to cry on or a helping hand, these are true heroes! A partnership with Maui Health and Pacific Media Group, Hometown Heroes honors those in our community who are doing what they can, whether big or small, to help provide some sense of normalcy, security, love, and protection during these very trying times.

You can nominate any Maui County resident, of any age. A winner is selected every week, wins a $50 gift card, and is announced each Friday on 99.9 KISS-FM. Visit mauihealth.org/hero to nominate a hero.

‘Ohana SELF-CARE

Tips for Caregivers During COVID-19 BY CHRISTINE SPENCER REGIONAL COORDINATOR, ALZHEIMER’S ALOHA CHAPTER MAUI COUNTY

Family caregivers undoubtedly have one of the toughest jobs out there; and during the pandemic their unpaid hours have increased even more. Over 65,000 family caregivers in our state contribute to the 17 billion hours of unpaid care in our country each year for Alzheimer’s disease. Here are a few tips for caregivers during COVID-19. 1. Make your life easier. Make less trips to the pharmacy by asking your primary care physician to fill medicines for longer amounts of time — for instance, a 90-day rather than a 30-day prescription. Maintain a consistent routine day to day, as people living with dementia do really well with a regular schedule every day. When plans change, this may cause anxiety, confusion and behavior changes like mood swings. Areas you can build routines around are meals, hobbies, and times to wake up and go to bed. With the approaching holiday season, one can feel overwhelmed. Think about ways you can simplify holiday activities and make new traditions. 2. Ask for help. Easier said than done for many of us, but it is encouraged especially now when many regular activities for seniors are limited due to safety concerns. The Alzheimer’s Aloha Chapter offers free support services and classes. Call the Helpline any time of day or night: 800-272-3900. Join

a support group to talk story with fellow caregivers, sign up for a class online, or schedule a personalized Care Consultation. Sometimes our ohana and friends want to help, but they don’t know what to do. Be specific when they offer — suggest they sit with your loved one, run an errand for you, or bring a meal over to give you extra time. 3. Stay calm, confident and healthy. Many people living with Alzheimer’s disease can pick up on other people’s emotions or can sense negative energy. It is important to focus on doing things you enjoy to relax. Believe in your amazing ability as a caregiver and decision maker — you’ve gotten this far! Focus on your health and take a minute to ask yourself what you need to access wellness. Staying active, eating healthy, getting a good night’s sleep, and connecting socially are pillars for overall health.
