A letter from the Publisher KATHY FOX PUBLISHER | EDITOR IN CHIEF In the last six months we have come a long way, and I am so glad to have you read issue four of Maury County Living. Summer is here and things are looking more like “normal” every day. While we continue to explore Maury County, I am constantly reminded what an amazing community this is to be a part of. In this issue I am excited to share with you the beautiful wildlife and scenery of Maury County, courtesy of Brian Willocks’ photography. The cover feature shines the spotlight on The Mulehouse, a new music and event venue that opened at the end of May, and how the dreams of Blair Garner came to fruition. We give you a look at a gorgeous pool oasis in Maury County along with a stunning redesign of a 1972 ranch house sure to give you inspiration. We also take a moment to honor and thank ALL the public servants who protect and serve us daily, highlighting Columbia Fire & Rescue Station 1. In addition, we recognize the valedictorians of the class of 2021 and share their collegiate plans as they embark on their new journeys this fall. A very special shout out to Jack Cobb, with Maury County School District, for his assistance in helping me gather much of the information needed for this feature. Thank you! There is also a touching story on the celebration of life and news about businesses on the move here to serve you. Finally, SAVE THE DATE for a special black-tie optional gala and shopping event at the Factory of Columbia in December — you will not want to miss this event! The mission at Maury County Living magazine is to connect the residents of Maury County to local businesses by sharing curated feature articles. BRIAN WILLOCKS Hiker, photographer, storm chaser, owl seeker and nature enthusiast are words that best describe Brian Willocks. Although he was born and raised in South Florida, he spent many vacations visiting family in East Tennessee and thanks them for giving him the appreciation of the outdoors and nature. His passion for wildlife photography is a big change from shooting for television and websites, but he is enjoying every minute. In 2017, Willocks moved to Maury County and is very happy to call Tennessee home. As you can tell by looking at his beautiful wildlife photos, he truly likes to “Log off and get out doors!”

THE

Mulehouse

AMERICA’S ULTIMATE VENUE For seventeen years the church at the corner of South High Street and West 8th Street in downtown Columbia sat empty, falling into disrepair. But in Blair Garner’s eyes, he saw nothing but beauty and opportunity. This is where he could build his own platform — one allowing for the kinds of meaningful, insightful, and relatable celebrity interviews that are his passion. The sanctuary would be reimagined. It would become a stage. The congregation would become an audience of fans and the conversations would become a unique and captivating experience for artists and fans alike. 14

BLAIR GARNER’S PERSONAL MANTRA — “WORK HARD AND BE KIND” SERVES AS THE FOUNDATION TO HIS STORIED CAREER AND BLESSED FAMILY LIFE. IT’S ALSO WHAT HAS SUSTAINED HIM THROUGH THE CHALLENGES OF TURNING HIS GREATEST DREAM INTO REALITY — HIS PASSION PROJECT — THE MULEHOUSE IN COLUMBIA, TENNESSEE.

The Mulehouse held its first ever event on May 22, 2021, which featured performances by Country Music artists Lee Brice, Chuck Wicks and Tyler Farr to raise funds for The Special Forces Charitable Fund. The result was an immersive and unparalleled experience for artists and fans alike. And thanks to the venue’s cutting-edge livestream technology, that rich experience will extend beyond the venue walls to a truly global audience. Opening day was full of excitement and gratitude. As Garner explained, “I didn’t feel I should be the first person to set foot on the stage because it was Pastor Mike Dawson from the First Baptist Church who led the congregation that final Sunday morning from this property years ago. I reached out to this inspirational man and said, ‘You are the singular person on this planet that deserves the honor of walking up on the stage first.’ So he did, and generously blessed the building and officially declared it The Mulehouse. That day was packed with emotion, second only to

crying tears from a depth of gratitude that I’ve never experienced before. The culmination of the dream to the reality of it was beyond my wildest dreams.” Now that The Mulehouse has officially opened, Garner feels it is important that it no longer be called his dream because this is something that belongs to Columbia. It is a community dream and Colombia has embraced it as its own. Garner smiled, “I am simply the guy lucky enough to have the key that fits the locks in my new hometown Columbia, Tennessee.”

to value — and to support everyone in pursuing their own dreams — all while collectively working to turn The Mulehouse dream into reality. The shared vision of The Mulehouse team is to establish itself as “America’s Ultimate Venue” — to make a lasting impact on the music industry as well as the landscape of Columbia, Tennessee.

THE SHARED VISION OF THE MULEHOUSE TEAM IS TO ESTABLISH ITSELF AS “AMERICA’S ULTIMATE VENUE” — TO MAKE A LASTING IMPACT ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AS WELL AS THE LANDSCAPE OF COLUMBIA, TENNESSEE. Garner began his broadcast career in his hometown of Canyon, Texas when he was only 17. The owner of the small-town radio station thought Blair might be great on air and offered him an audition. Only three months later, Garner was snatched away to work in the top-10 market of Dallas, Texas. By the age of 23 he racked up wins in the coveted markets of Los Angles, New York, Houston and Washington, DC. In 1993, his

Garner and his husband, Eric, discovered Columbia while searching for a family vacation home. The goal was simple. It shouldn’t be too far away from Nashville, but should feel as if it were a world away. And it was in this historic self-proclaimed “mule capital of the world” that they found their dream home — their “forever home”. “I didn’t realize how much I missed community until Columbia wrapped its arms around me and my family,” said Garner.

strong entrepreneurial bent took over, and he created his own syndication company with the show that he both created and hosted, After MidNite. That show quickly tracked as the fastest-growing syndicated show in broadcast history. Twenty years later he was hosting a #1 Country morning show in Nashville. After three high octane years, the grueling pace was taking a toll on his family, whom he calls his greatest achievement. Garner knew what he had to do. He resigned his position the next day. Not wanting to lose him, the company promptly offered the chance to do a different show — this time, on his own schedule. The resulting Blair Garner Show grew to 170 affiliates in the first six months alone. Through it all, Garner formed lasting personal and professional relationships with some of the leading forces in entertainment — those relationships are now eagerly PHOTO COURTESY OF THE MULEHOUSE.

supporting his new venture. For Garner, it all goes back to that one simple idea of working hard and being kind. He’s scored a Marconi nomination, nine Billboard Broadcast Awards, and three Academy of Country Music Awards. And while earning those recognitions, he collected a wealth of experiences — both good and bad — all of which are now helping Garner and The Mulehouse in establishing the guiding principles for the young company: Community. Quality. Iconic. Impact. 16

long-form types of conversations, Garner knew he would once again have to navigate uncharted waters. The decision to dive head first into those waters was natural for this lifelong entrepreneur. And the dive he made, was a big one indeed. Garner and his husband purchased a 55,000 sq. ft. building — the former home to Columbia’s First Baptist Church, situated next door to President James K. Polk’s

ancestral home, museum, and library. This is where the dream began to physically realize itself. These intimate interviews, done in true Garner fashion (no notes, just a lot of preparation — and a lot of listening on Garner’s end) will serve as the cornerstone for The Mulehouse. “Fame doesn’t insulate celebrities from the shared human experience. We all have fears. We all suffer loss. We know the joys of success, and we understand the weight of a moral choice” he says. “When artists allow themselves to be that vulnerable — to speak so candidly — fans relate to that. They forge a far more meaningful bond with the artists they love.

Garner knows from his close relationships with artists what they value most — They want to know that they will sound good. They want to know that they will look good. And just like their fans, the artist wants a rich and meaningful experience. That is exactly what The Mulehouse will give them. No stone was left unturned, with an especially exhaustive effort going into both the sound and lighting design, as well as the overall aesthetics of the venue. “When you combine the latest tech with a tip of the hat to history, the end result is a different level.” Garner explained. Utilizing his “uncompromising standards, a dedication to excellence and stamina,” Garner unequivocally labels his project as “built without excuse.” He says, “where others only see roadblocks, I see opportunity. And I’m never afraid to walk through a door that’s been opened for me.” Garner credits that kind of courage to his parent’s advice. His mom taught him early on, that “the odds don’t apply to you” and his Dad said, “If you’re going to make a mistake, make it as big as possible. Don’t be timid.” All of this factor into the The Mulehouse, which will ultimately include a theater bar, restaurant and boutique hotel within the building. “I want The Mulehouse to serve as an example of the kind of magic that results from marrying your dream with action,” Garner said. “I would love it if we can inspire people to remember a dream they long ago labeled as impossible — to consciously silence that inner voice of negativity that keeps creeping in — the one that tells them they aren’t good enough, or that it will never work. I want them to believe in themselves, and to summon the courage that will allow them to show the world who they truly are, and PHOTO BY ROSS JAYNES VISUAL MEDIA CO.

what kinds of remarkable things they can actually achieve.”

WHERE OTHERS ONLY SEE ROADBLOCKS, I SEE OPPORTUNITY. AND I’M NEVER AFRAID TO WALK THROUGH A DOOR THAT’S BEEN OPENED FOR ME.

And when it’s all said and done, what does Garner value most? “My last name,” he says. “Whatever successes or material rewards come my way, none of it compares to the value of that name. It’s the greatest gift I can ever give to my children. Take everything else away, I don’t care. I want that name to represent someone who treated people with kindness — that says you made the right choice, even when it wasn’t to your own personal benefit — it should be a name that stands for integrity, honesty, and goodwill. If I do that, then I will have led a most successful life.” n

Great FOOD — Great COCKTAILS

IN AN ATMOSPHERE FULL OF TENNESSEE CHARM

Southern Tré STEAKHOUSE

COLUMBIA OWNED & OPERATED BY THE TERRY FAMILY

Located in the heart of downtown Columbia, Southern Tré Steakhouse creates a space where family and friends can come enjoy a great meal or simply say hello. Open since 2016, the restaurant has a large variety of menu options ranging from seafood to pasta, to steak of course! What better way to spend your time than with great food, great cocktails, and an atmosphere full of all the Tennessee charm that our wonderful town of Columbia has to offer. Voted Best Outdoor Dining Space for many years running, the outdoor patio at Southern Tré is set in the famous (infamous) Whiskey Alley. It is surrounded by the beautiful architecture of yesteryear, with lots of open seating to enjoy the Middle-Tennessee weather we love. Live music is also another reason to secure a patio table, as Southern Tré brings in local artists to perform on Thursdays when the weather permits. Upstairs at Southern Tré, there are two private event spaces booked for weddings, showers, corporate meetings, birthday parties, and much more throughout the year. It is the goal of Southern Tré’s event staff to provide the best possible services to the wonderful community of Columbia. Southern Tré is not just about steak and seafood but offers an extensive menu exciting for even the most discerning palette. If you enjoy great food, an uplifting atmosphere, and being around friends and neighbors, we are always here to serve you. The restaurant is owned and operated by the Terry family: Ralph, Barbara, Julia, and Brandt. Ralph got his start in the BBQ business in North Houston, Texas and still owns the local favorite, Pit-Master BBQ. His love for food and family brought him back to his home state of Tennessee. With dreams of being close to music and Memphis, Ralph found the perfect place to settle down in Columbia, Tenn. The family relocated from Texas over a year ago and are proud members of the Noon Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Daughter, Julia Terry and fiancé, Brandt Archer’s musical career first drew the family to the Nashville area, but once they laid eyes on Southern Tré and spent months getting to know Columbia and the spectacularly friendly people, they knew it was home. The Terry’s are always around to greet and enjoy the company of the restaurant’s patrons. “We were welcomed to Columbia to an extent I have

Updated and Functional SPRING 2021 DESIGN HOME By Elizabeth Shane The Linen Duck’s second annual Design House is located at 1409 Windermere Drive in Columbia. This year a 1972 ranch home was selected to redesign. Lead designer, Becky Smith, said, “The team was excited to take on the challenge of bringing a new 21st century footprint to this 1970’s traditional home. With today’s new homes, tall ceilings, and open living spaces are prevalent, but I find so much value in a single level home, especially when the home sits on a beautiful lot with mature trees in a great neighborhood. The vision for this home from the beginning was to create an updated traditional concept with pops of contemporary elements to create interest.”

THE VISION FOR THIS HOME FROM THE BEGINNING WAS TO CREATE AN UPDATED TRADITIONAL CONCEPT WITH POPS OF CONTEMPORARY ELEMENTS TO CREATE INTEREST.

When talking to Smith about where the team starts when creating new floor plan concepts, she explained, “We start with incorporating essential spaces to how most people are using their homes today. Updated kitchens and large private master suites are essential, followed by spaces to entertain and have family dinners. Then we spend time trying to find opportunities to add in perks custom to the home’s character. Finding room for a home office is always a bonus with so many people working from home now.” An updated and functional floor plan was at the heart of the project, but the mood of the Spring 2021 Design House was definitely set by the finishes and furnishings. You could not help but notice the lighting was carefully selected throughout the home. “With lower ceilings, finding stunning fixtures that cast the perfect lighting was important,” Smith said. “I incorporated fixtures from several different lighting companies who are showcased regularly at The Linen Duck.” In addition, the home carried a neutral pallet throughout with pops of color. Featured wallpaper in the foyer and bathrooms added personality, and a rich accent color along the back wall of the open living area created a cozy atmosphere. You can find more before and after pictures at thelinenduck.com under the gallery.

INVITING ENTRY TO OPEN CONCEPT By opening up the living room, dining room, and kitchen the design team created an open concept without sacrificing these designated areas. Once the space was opened up, the original fireplace worked perfectly to create a new elegant dining room. The team elevated the space even further by adding custom cabinetry to function as a bar equipped with a wine chiller. The living room complements the entire area with custom upholstery from Norwalk. The team used Norwalk’s newest fabric introductions and unique furniture design to add contemporary elements. MAURYCOUNTYLIVING.COM

|

27

MASTER BEDROOM Originally the home had one smaller master bedroom on the east wing and a converted garage that shared the laundry room and an additional bedroom on the west side of the home. Today the converted garage is now a new exterior entry into a large mudroom and a new master suite. The master suite is the jewel of the home. The built-in cabinets create character, as well as functional space. Here again, the team used Norwalk’s latest fabrics to create a custom headboard while mixing linen and velvet elements for luxurious bedding. Velvet drapes and a white cowhide chair add texture to complete the space.

MASTER BATHROOM The design team did not disappoint here. Maximizing on the natural light from the large window over the bathtub, the team brought in deep rich hues to create a high-end retreat. Beautiful lighting fixtures and wall coverings add layers of luxury. The master bathroom was redesigned from the original laundry room. Smith stated she always puts a high priority on the master bathroom and closet when remodeling. 28

HOME OFFICE Converting an extra bedroom into a home office is becoming more and more relevant. Using the original master bedroom, the team created a home office that can easily be used for a guest suite when needed. Norwalk’s conversational sofa measures the size of a twin bed, and with its down wrapped cushions, you are assured comfort when sleeping or sitting. This room features a classical design mixed with updated elements such as the waterfall glass side table, acrylic desk chair, and slouchy linen slipcovered side chair from Taylor King’s Lauren Liess collection. The Linen Duck offers full-service design options, but they specialize in room design concepts delivered within 7 to 10 days. Utilizing their vast selection of furnishing and accessory vendors to create customized rooms, the Linen Duck design team will create a space unique to your home. Whether you have a one room makeover, space planning

COLUMBIA Fire and Rescue STATION 1

Our community is supported in so many ways by the men and women who serve as firefighters, paramedics, and police officers. First responders’ duties place them in harm’s way daily, but those who serve in these rolls find it extremely rewarding, satisfying, and truly have a servant’s heart. Firefighters in Columbia train more than 240 hours per year to ensure they are prepared to handle all types of emergencies that occur in the City of Columbia. We want to take this opportunity to introduce some of the firefighters at Station 1, as well as thank ALL the firefighters and first responders around Maury County for their assistance: Thank you for your service — we

appreciate everything you do for the community!

“Today I enjoy the job just as much as the first day I started.” stated Cobb, but what he enjoys most about being Fire Chief is impacting the lives of others in a positive way. He likes to solve problems, find solutions, and look for ways to improve. Managing tax dollars is an important part of his job and he strives to spend the taxpayer’s dollars wisely and efficiently. This is a major responsibility as Fire Chief in a growing energetic city and one challenge and responsibility he takes very seriously. As part of the leadership team, he understands the accountability the responsibility brings and knows making the right decision is imperative because it directly impacts the lives and people in the community the firefighters protect and serve. JAKE LEE — FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC

TODD WIENCEK — CAPTAIN/FIREFIGHTER/AEMT EVERY CALL WE GO ON IS UNIQUE. I ENJOY WORKING IN A TEAM SETTING TO ACCOMPLISH A COMMON GOAL. Captain Todd Wiencek came on board September 8, 2008, making this summer 13 years with Columbia Fire and Rescue. He began at Station 1 as a firefighter and was there for five years before transferring to Station 3 in 2013. In January 2021, he moved back to Station 1 and is one of the firefighters who is also an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. Wiencek wanted an opportunity to give back to the community and as a firefighter he felt he would get to help people during their worst times. He also wanted a career in a field that was constantly evolving and allowed him to stay active. He said, “Every call we go on is unique. I enjoy working in a team setting to accomplish a common goal. I always enjoy the calls that look bad, but have the result where everyone is okay. Sometimes after realizing everyone is fine, the caller will apologize for calling us. We remind them that this is our job and to never hesitate to call us during an emergency. We are always happy to watch people go home safe and healthy.” When Captain Wiencek has time off, he enjoys fishing in the local rivers and creeks and he and his family also enjoy going bowling at Ten Pin Alley for a fun night out.

CARRYING THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE COMMUNITY TRUSTING YOU IS AN INVALUABLE SERVICE PART OF THE JOB. Jake Lee has been a firefighter for 20 years and has been with Columbia Fire & Rescue for two years and he is also one of the paramedics at the station. He naturally has a servant’s heart and being a firefighter allows him to serve others, build strong relationships, and make a positive difference in the city and the surrounding area he serves. “Seeing the faces of people we serve when we make a positive difference in their life. Their faces just light up when you mitigate their emergency from a cat in a tree, skunk removal, car accident, death of a loved one, domestic violence, and fire suppression,” Lee described as some of things he likes best about his job. Lee also explained, “Carrying the responsibility of the community trusting you is an invaluable service part of the job.” One of the most unique ‘firefighter’ stories Lee shared was when he was approached by the administration to be a pallbearer in a funeral of a person he did not even know. This was such a unique request, but it was explained to him the person who passed loved firefighters and always wanted to date one. She never dated one, but her last request was to be carried out by firefighters and to be able to fulfill her dying wish was one of the greatest requests he has been able to be a part of in his career. “Her family was so grateful. The tears of joy in their eyes and warm embraces said it all. They even sent us thank you cards,” Lee recounted. When Lee has time off, he enjoys spending time in downtown Columbia or doing outdoor activities. You may find him at one of the unique shops near the square, hiking on one of the beautiful trails, or fishing at one of the nearby creeks.

OUR LITTLE

Oasis

IN MAURY COUNTY By Katie Baker

Only in Tennessee can you enjoy the outdoor space your home has to offer year-round. Bill and Cindy Toler already had a stunning back porch overlooking the valleys of south Columbia, but there was one, albeit wet, element missing — the pool. Having built five pools at various homes they have owned over the years, the Tolers set out, pre-covid, to build their dream backyard poolscape and aptly named it, “Our Little Oasis”.

Taking inspiration from their travels to Key West, the Tolers set out to design a pool and entertaining area that brought an airy, tropical vibe to their hilltop home. Their design concepts were discussed with Peek Pools, of the famed HGTV show Pool Kings, and the dream backyard the Tolers envisioned came to life. Cindy’s best piece of advice for anyone putting in a pool, “Do your research. Look at other people’s pools, watch Pool Kings, and build what works best for your lifestyle.” Most pools are relatively simple to build — a flat piece of land is dug out and a bean or rectangular pool is dropped in its place. However, the Toler’s backyard on a hilltop meant the entire design would be modified for two levels to take advantage of the sweeping views of Maury County. The top level is dotted with plush seating areas from Family Leisure in Franklin and is divided by a dual use hot tub or baby pool depending on the weather. When turned on the hot tub creates a waterfall across ocean blue tiles into the gunite pool below. Pops of blue furniture dot the travertine landscape along with a mix of eclectic outdoor decor collected from the Toler’s many travel adventures over the years.

The Tolers intend for this to be their retirement home so they made sure to include every wish list convenience they could think of when creating the covered kitchen and bar area. The stacked stone and granite counters were finished with True brand appliances including an artisan grill, fridge, and ice maker to refresh the sunset cocktails guests are invited to enjoy. Retractable blinds shade the sun when friends gather around the outdoor tv and Lasko space heaters keep revelers warm when the cooler temps come into play. The entire Key West concept was executed flawlessly, but nothing can compare to the sunsets that grace the Toler’s “Little Oasis”. As day turns to night, the fire bowls flanking the infinity pool light up in spectacular fashion against the brilliance of a Tennessee sunset. For fun, the Tolers will activate an advanced The lower tier of the backyard is where the real fun begins. then Peek Pools successfully made that happen for the Tolers. “Our Little Oasis” can be enjoyed as a calm escape or a place to kick up their heels and enjoy good times with the people the Tolers love the most. As Cindy explained, “We wanted it to be a peaceful getaway for ourselves, but we also really love to have our friends and family over. The memories we make back here are what we enjoy the most.”

WE WANTED IT TO BE A PEACEFUL GETAWAY FOR OURSELVES, BUT WE ALSO REALLY LOVE TO HAVE OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY OVER. THE MEMORIES WE MAKE BACK HERE ARE WHAT WE ENJOY THE MOST.

The Toler’s backyard was completed in about 9 months’ time and right as COVID began to hit the scene. Nowadays a new pool may take up to 18 months to build as the stay home orders escalated the decision for many homeowners to build a pool in their backyard. At one time in real estate pools were thought to add little value to a home as they required too much upkeep, but current market closing stats show that in Maury County homes with a pool saw on average a 15% increase in value between 2020-2021.

HISTORIC POLK HOME GARDENS

By Kathy Fox

The historic Polk Home gardens are the perfect setting for private weddings and events. The charming yard and spectacular gardens allow guests to design a unique celebration in an intimate space in the heart of downtown When Brittney Poynor was planning her baby ■ ■Columbia. ■■■■■ shower, she wanted a venue that had charm, splendor and was spectacular. Poynor, owner of Lace & Company and Bombshell Beauty, has deep roots in Columbia and was even the 2014 Mule Day Queen. In her mind, there was no question the Polk Home would be the ideal venue for the baby shower to celebrate her incredibly special rainbow baby on the way.

IT’S A BOY THIS TIME AND WE ARE SO READY TO CELEBRATE LIFE AND OUR RAINBOW BABY!

A rainbow baby is an endearing term used to describe children born after a miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death, symbolizing a storm’s end. Having a rainbow baby is a time usually met with joy and very mixed emotions. Brittney Poynor and her husband, Nick, found out they were expecting in October 2019. All things were going well, but unfortunately at the 20-week anatomy scan they were given some bad news. Their baby girl had brain development issues and sadly a few weeks later in February 2020, the couple lost her. “Obviously my husband and I were desperately upset, but the Lord had better plans,” Poynor said. “In October 2020, we found out we were pregnant again and the due date was in the same month we were due last time around. It’s a boy this time and we are so ready to celebrate life and our rainbow baby!”

MY BABY SHOWER WAS ALMOST AS BIG AS MY WEDDING. IT WAS TRULY A CELEBRATION OF LIFE MORE SO THAN EVER JUST BECAUSE I WAS ABSOLUTELY BLESSED BY MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Brittney and Nick celebrated with grandeur hosting a baby shower in the splendor of the Polk Home gardens with 70 family members and guests in attendance. It was a very precious time as the couple rejoiced getting to bring a new baby into this world. “I could not have asked for a better venue. The Polk Home was great to work with as were the other companies. It was magnificent from beginning to end. Danny Holmes Catering provided the food, my mother and I decorated, Taylor and Tate Photography photographed all of our fun pieces, and Copycats Print Services did all these large picture prints for me and the invitations,” Brittney explained. “My baby shower was almost as big as my wedding. It was truly a celebration of life more so than ever just because I was absolutely blessed by my family and friends. I mean I’m still unpacking gifts, but baby Nicholas Brock is ready for his big arrival and so are we.”

States. In addition to lashes her Spring Hill studio now offers a full slate of services for eyebrows including micro blading, powder brows or machine strokes as well as other PMU services including lip blushing and eyeliner.

PERFECTION IS OUR GOAL, BUT NOTE THAT NOTHING IS PERFECT — BROWS ARE SISTERS, NOT TWINS.

“We all know that beauty comes from within, but our physical attributes also affect how we feel about ourselves,” Jenkins stated. “Not to mention the fact, the convenience of Permanent Cosmetics and eyelash extensions!” Maven Lash & Brow is the premier machine strokes brow studio in middle Tennessee, but also offers micro blading as an option for clients. As Jenkins explains, “Micro blading is a manual tattoo procedure using a handheld tool to create hair strokes in the brows. Machine strokes is a tattoo procedure creating brow hair strokes by implanting pigment into the skin with a tattoo machine and the healed results are crisper and tend to last twice as long as micro blading.” It is a personal decision, and the benefits of each technique can be discussed during a consultation. “Lifestyle and after-care play a huge role in the healed results, and not everyone is a candidate for these procedures. In this case, powder brows (shading) may be a better option.” Jenkins added, “Perfection is our goal, but note that nothing is perfect — Brows are sisters, not twins.” In addition, Jenkins is now offering 3D areola restoration (tattooing), which is a service that can help so many women who have had reconstructive breast surgery. Very simply this technique of shading and shadows gives the illusion of having a third dimension and looking as if the tattoo is above the skin creating a nipple and areola. This service is a beautiful solution to help women feel confident again after reconstructive breast surgery. Book your appointment or consultation online today. Jenkins and her staff will take the time to discuss options and explain the difference between

the available techniques and services. The strong attention to detail and providing the best possible customer service is the reason for their success! n Jenkins is in good standing with the TNDCI and TNDH. Member and insured ASCP and member SPCP.

A KIT C H EN A R I U M

On the Move By Adam York

LIME & LOAF EXPANDS WITH NEW COMMUNITY-FOCUSED DESTINATION EXPERIENCE Let’s open a kitchen store in the middle of a pandemic! Says no one ever, right? Well, believe it or not, those words were uttered last summer when local business owners Paul and Chrissy Jensen of The Dotted Lime and Kathryn and Adam York of Smith & York Co. decided to join forces and bring to life a local kitchen shop experience in downtown Columbia, Tennessee — Lime & Loaf, a chef-curated kitchenarium for people who love to cook (or just want to look like they know). And while the tiny store’s opening inside Smith & York Co. might have appeared ill-timed, no one could have imagined the response that was received throughout the past year, as Lime & Loaf experienced tremendous growth and praise from near and far, leading to an expansion and new location in 2021.

A COLLABORATION OF RESTAURANT AND RETAIL Both The Dotted Lime and Smith & York Co. have built successful standalone businesses, each with their own unique offerings and dedicated followers. So, how did these two worlds collide? Well, as each business became frequent patrons of the other, the four business owners soon learned that their dreams and goals for growing their businesses had a common thread: The Dotted Lime’s chef-inspired, wholesome foods and culinary expertise and Smith & York Co.’s passion for entertaining guests with well-curated dining and tabletop accessories. “We had always envisioned opening a kitchen store concept, and we quickly realized in the late spring of 2020 that cooking, eating out, and spending more time at home was starting to take on a new form,” says Paul Jensen. As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic led to business shutdowns and stay-at-home orders, the Jensens witnessed changes to normal business models firsthand. Chrissy Jensen explains, “As people were staying at home with more time on their hands for cooking and baking, we realized there was a need for local access to high-quality chef’s knives, baking tools and accessories, and hard-tofind items.” These observations helped affirm that a void could be filled locally with the addition of a retail shop focused on kitchen essentials and gadgets.

HERE WE GROW With a prosperous first year behind them, the Jensens and Yorks are thrilled to be expanding Lime & Loaf in late summer of 2021, as the business will settle into its new home at 510 North Garden Street within the New South Marketplace complex. “Conveniently nestled next door to Tallgrass Meat Co., Lime & Loaf will soon offer an expanded collection of kitchen items, including small appliances, high-quality knives and cookware, baking essentials, and so much more,” Chrissy explains.

AS PEOPLE WERE STAYING AT HOME WITH MORE TIME ON THEIR HANDS FOR COOKING AND BAKING, WE REALIZED THERE WAS A NEED FOR LOCAL ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY CHEF’S KNIVES, BAKING TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES, AND HARD-TO-FIND ITEMS.

Additionally, Lime & Loaf will also offer monthly cooking classes and demonstrations in its hands-on kitchen, as well as a grab-and-go style café with pre-prepared food selections, baked goods, and more. “We’re excited to offer a destination experience like we haven’t seen throughout the kitchen retail industry. We hope to bring something new, different, and experiential for the community that will even draw visitors from around our region. Above all, we want to make Columbia proud,” affirms Kathryn. n

As the Jensens observed the growth and success happening on the downtown square at Smith & York Co., they were led to share their kitchen retail vision with the Yorks, who just happened to have an unused dedicated space inside their shop and were playing with ideas on how to best utilize it. “We were looking to launch a new retail concept of our own, and the timing was perfect to come alongside Paul and Chrissy with this unique partnership. We never imagined how this pop-up style shop within our store would meet so many needs– especially in a year when in-person shopping looked so different.” says Kathryn York. But, Smith & York Co.’s location and the unusual time in history proved to be the perfect incubation period for the tiny kitchenarium.

Lime & Loaf will continue to operate inside Smith & York Co. until the new space is ready, and you can now shop Lime & Loaf’s collections online at limeandloaf.com. ADAM YORK is the co-owner of Smith & York Company and Lime & Loaf and is a content marketing director at Green Apple Strategy, a strategic, full-service marketing and PR agency. Add some zest to summer and enjoy a scrumptious lemon olive oil cake. It is quick and easy to make and most importantly tastes delicious. The cake has incredible lemon flavor and is not overly sweet. Olive oil cakes are ridiculously moist without being too heavy or dense. In fact, you will see the moistness seeping from the cake (not literally of course), but it does not taste oily at all. Since olive oil is the main ingredient, it is important to use good quality

extra virgin olive oil — EVOO. With that being said, even after a week the cake tastes as good as it did the first day and believe it or not is even more moist. The lemon olive oil cake is the perfect cake to serve at a fancy dinner party or a family picnic. It’s simply delightful and everyone will ask for seconds!
