ANCIENT LORE VILLAGE
By Kathy Fox
Nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, just 15 minutes from downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, is a magical and whimsical boutique resort and event venue. Ancient Lore Village is a breath of fresh air that fosters community and creates unforgettable memories. Every visit to this whimsical village offers an immersive experience, allowing guests to explore the great outdoors, dine on award-winning fare, and partake in weekly activities. Whether you are visiting with a group or seeking a solo retreat, the wonder of Ancient Lore Village awaits to be discovered.
Tom Boyd, Founder and Chairman of the Board, is the mastermind behind Ancient Lore Village. The village was inspired by Boyd's book, Bokee's Trek: Outcasts to the Inner Earth, which imagines a place inhabited by creatures like orcs and fairies. Boyd shared, “The main question I always get is, ‘Why did I come up with this idea? Where did it originate? What was my background that made me ever decide to build something like this or even knew how?’ The answer to the first one is I didn't know, but I had a dream about how to make the world a little bit better ... I had to have a set of characters for the message I wanted to get across. The message is that if all people of all races would simply talk to each other and be friends, but you had to have a place to do that. And [my] goal was to get a few at a time, here in this village, to learn that there is a better way to live, and I think we did that.”
Boyd’s dream came to fruition with the Village’s seven enchanting dwellings, nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. He created Ancient Lore Village to help people unplug and reconnect with each other and nature. He wanted his guests to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, slow down to spend quality time with family and friends, and discover the joy of a few days without television or computers.
Each dwelling is unique, with a theme based on Boyd’s book. Amenities in each dwelling include a fireplace, wet bar with microwave, mini fridge, French press coffee maker, at least one full bathroom, and a cozy sitting area. The themed décor features locally sourced furniture to jeweled-adorned walls or custom murals helping bring Boyd’s vision to life. Every detail in each dwelling was thoughtfully curated, including the most comfortable beds ever.
BOKEE’S BUNGALOW was the first custom dwelling built in 2019 at Ancient Lore Village and is the largest at 1,600 sq. ft. — sleeping up to eight. This twolevel signature dwelling was built 19 feet underground and is topped with 75,000 pounds of dirt and special potted grasses. Bokee’s Bungalow's main floor features two private rooms each with a queen bed, two full bathrooms, a unique built-in dinette, and a wood-burning fireplace. The curved staircase leads upstairs where there are two sets of twin bunk beds, a third full bathroom, a game area, and a spacious seating area.
WATERFALL VILLA exudes luxury and natural beauty indoors. The villa can accommodate up to four guests and promises relaxation as guests look out to a beautiful waterfall in the woods. The first room is a breathtaking space featuring a birchwood theme with 14 layers of Venetian plaster to bring the feeling of being inside a birch tree forest. The 600 sq. ft. room has a king bed, full bath with waterfall shower, electric fireplace, sitting area, dining table, and is sure to please any guest. The spacious adjoining 400 sq. ft. room with a cozy queen-sized sleeper sofa and full bathroom offers similar amenities as the larger room.
DAY AND EVENING DISCOVERY PASSES ARE AVAILABLE FOR THOSE NOT STAYING AT THE VILLAGE, ALLOWING VISITORS
TO EXPLORE THE LUSH AND TRANQUIL PROPERTY AND PARTAKE IN THE ACTIVITIES.
FAIRY COTTAGE brings fairytales to life. Shimmers of pinks, creams, golds, and purples embellish the elegant walls of this whimsical dwelling that sleeps two. The space is approximately 400 sq. ft. where guests will find all the cozy necessities including a king-size bed, a full bathroom where the shower walls were crafted using exquisite tiles creating a flower pattern, and rockers in front of the fireplace to relax.
GREMLIN DENS can be adjoined or kept separate to best suit the needs of your party. Each of the two Gremlin Dens is approximately 400 sq. ft. and features a king-size bed, a fireplace with stonework from floor to ceiling, and a moose mural in the bedroom. The cozy seating area and décor make guests feel like they are off in a dream world.
LEPRECHAUN LAIR is full of mischievous, playful details just like the character is in Bokee’s Trek. This enchanting space of roughly 400 sq. ft. has walls adorned with stunning jewels and gold specks, a magical swirl stone fireplace, and a king-size bed in the bedroom. The cozy seating area by the fireplace with two rockers will make you feel like you have found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
ORC HOME is larger than life and full of emboldened details. There is a handcrafted wood headboard for the king-size bed. This dwelling boasts the highest ceilings on the property and features organic adornments such as a chandelier made from antlers to bull horns mounted above the bed. The Orc Home is also ADA-compliant.
To help guests unwind, 67 serene acres are waiting to be explored. Ancient Lore Village offers plenty of communal spaces for gathering and a large fire pit in the Village Gardens. Activities include axethrowing and archery and Gremlin Gameyard features cornhole, jumbo Jenga, yard dice, Connect Four, and horseshoes. At Fairytale Meadowlands, guests can enjoy a scavenger hunt, hike the trails, or capture incredible photos of the Village from Pinnacle Point. Selfguided audio tours are also available, allowing guests to explore the Village at their own pace.
Day and Evening Discovery Passes are available for those not staying at the Village, allowing visitors to explore the lush and tranquil property and partake in the activities. Additionally, the Village hosts monthly events like wine, bourbon, or dinner tastings and usually schedules monthly family-oriented events and makers events like blacksmithing or painting classes.
Although the Village does not have a restaurant, they do have a fantastic culinary team on site. Melissa Blettner, Chief Executive Officer, explained, “We don't have a restaurant per sé, but guests and visitors can sign up for lunch with our Food and Fun pass or dinner with either our Perfect Night Out or as part of a guest package.” Breakfast is casual in the room with yogurt and a muffin and the award-winning chef prepares exceptional food for lunch and dinner and can cater to any special dietary needs. A chefinspired Sunday Brunch, with optional Signature Mimosa Kits or freshly made Bloody Marys, is also offered weekly.
Blettner continued, “Chef Amy Carpenter, won the Chef of the Year award for the Greater Knoxville Hospitality Association competing against all the hospitality restaurants and hotels in Greater Knoxville. Next, she will go to compete at the Governor's Conference on Tourism, held in Chattanooga this fall. Olivia McGee, our general manager, won General Manager of the Year, and Ancient Lore Village as a whole won the #1 Tourism Property of the Year.”
The Village is constructing five treehouses expected to be completed this fall. There will be three king treehouses and two luxury treehouses, with the luxury ones featuring two private bedrooms and a full living area. Additionally, two settlement homes, designed for families, will accommodate up to five guests and be pet-friendly. Once the treehouses are finished, a Hammock Garden will be added nearby for guests and day visitors to unwind.
Guests will better understand the story after visiting the whimsical Ancient Lore Village. Bokee’s Trek is a story with nine core Unity values: Respect, Honesty, Wisdom, Empathy, Determination, Bravery, Compassion, Humility, and Growth. Bokee goes on a journey and meets many different characters along the way, but ultimately discovers that no matter their differences, they can all live in harmony in one place where only good exists. “I call it hospitality with purpose and the real mission here is to get people to unplug, that's why there are no televisions, and to communicate with one another. Hopefully, they realize that and when they leave will spread our vision and what we are doing here,” Blettner concluded. n

Dr. Megan Girmscheid, DMD
Dentalanxiety is a common concern for many people with approximately 40% of Americans experiencing it. Dental anxiety often stems from past experiences, fear of pain, or even the sound of the dental drill. Dr. Megan Girmscheid at Dental Haven, located in Franklin, Tennessee, has a passion for caring for the community and uses the groundbreaking approach of no-fear dentistry to transform her patient’s experience, ensuring that dental care is an accessible, comfortable, and enjoyable experience.
No-fear dentistry is a philosophy and practice that prioritizes patient comfort and alleviates anxiety through various techniques and technologies. Dental Haven is a no-judgment zone and the staff’s mission is to help patients feel comfortable and confident while undergoing treatments. This approach is especially important as dental health is crucial to overall well-being, and avoiding the dentist due to fear can lead to serious health issues down the road.
In May, Dental Haven celebrated its first anniversary. Thanks to the dedication of its team members, Dr. Girmscheid has created a welcoming environment that feels more like a boutique spa than a traditional dental office.
The moment you step into the office the serene ambiance, friendly staff, and calming decor work together to ease any initial apprehensions with comforting amenities such as a refreshment station to heated massage dental chairs. The team understands that a relaxed patient is a happy patient, and they go to great lengths to ensure that every visit is a positive experience.
The principle of no-fear dentistry will ease fears and help patients get the care they need for their smiles. Using innovative techniques and technologies designed to minimize discomfort and anxiety.
Sedation Dentistry: Whether it's nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, or general anesthesia, there is a range of options to help patients relax. These methods are safe and effective, allowing patients to undergo procedures without the stress and fear typically associated with dental visits.
Advanced Imaging: By utilizing state-of-the-art imaging technologies like digital X-rays and 3D imaging patients receive high-resolution images to make accurate images of their mouths. These tools not only provide more accurate diagnoses but also reduce the need for invasive exploratory procedures, further reducing patient anxiety.
Comfort Amenities: Patients can enjoy various amenities designed to create a soothing environment during treatments. From noise-canceling headphones, neck pillows, and weighted blankets to televisions in the ceilings, these small touches can make a significant difference in the overall experience.
Personalized Care: Each patient receives personalized care tailored to their specific needs and fears. After a consultation and cleaning by a hygienist, Dr. Girmscheid will perform a comprehensive oral exam. The dental team then takes the time to discuss any concerns, explain procedures in detail, and develop a treatment plan that minimizes stress and maximizes comfort.
The team at Dental Haven is dedicated not only to alleviating fear during visits but also to educating patients about their dental health. By demystifying procedures and providing comprehensive information, they empower patients to take control of their oral health without fear. This commitment to education also extends to preventive care by helping patients avoid more serious dental issues that can arise from neglecting routine check-ups due to anxiety.
Dental Haven is redefining the dental visit experience by building trust and fostering long-term relationships with patients. Those who once dreaded dental appointments now look forward to them, confident that their comfort and well-being are top priorities. Dental Haven offers a comprehensive range of services, including preventive, cosmetic, restorative, and emergency dentistry, as well as dental bonding, teeth whitening, dentures, crowns, veneers, and Botox. n
For anyone who has ever felt anxious about visiting the dentist, Dental Haven offers a sanctuary where fears are alleviated, and smiles are restored with care and kindness. St.Jude has hosted the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's Dream Home Giveaway for the past 11 years. This significant event in Nashville has successfully raised $16.7 million for their research center and hospital during that time. The St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is a raffle offering participants a chance to win a stunning newly built home in the Middle Tennessee area. Raffle tickets are priced at $100 each; those who purchase early may also qualify to win additional prizes. All donated funds directly contribute to supporting cancer research aimed at finding cures and these services are provided to care for critically ill children and their families entirely free of charge.
Last February, Mare Rote, Liaison Event Planner for Tennessee & Alabama at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® emailed Becky Smith, owner of The Linen Duck in Columbia, Tennessee, and invited her to furnish the dream home situated in the new June Lake neighborhood in Spring Hill. Smith was delighted to accept. The Linen Duck had the pleasure of serving as the furnishing partner for the 11th St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's Dream Home Giveaway and was one of more than 50 vendors who helped build the St. Jude Dream Home.
The Linen Duck, since 2019, has annually curated a home for their Design House for the public to visit and gather design inspiration. However, when the email arrived from Rote, Smith did not have a home for the Design House selected making it a very easy decision for Smith to redirect her Design Home resources towards this noble cause. “The Linen Duck was honored to be invited to furnish the St. Jude Dream Home,” said Smith.
St. Jude has collaborated with Signature Homes for seven consecutive years to construct the Dream Home. Signature Homes' in-house designers are responsible for creating both the color palette and interior selections. However, as the interior designer, Smith spearheaded the significant project, completely designing each room inspired by Signature Homes’ selections. Smith expressed her enthusiasm, “When Season Lot, from Signature Homes, shared their detailed selections with me, I was thrilled by their use of bold colors and striking tile choices.” She further elaborated on how people are increasingly embracing more colorful spaces. A sentiment reflected in Signature Homes' palette which featured rich greens, blues, and dark grays, also including yellow and terracotta hues.
Among all the spaces Smith designed within the St. Jude Dream Home, her favorite was undoubtedly revealed when entering through the front door. It's an exquisite welcome into a beautifully crafted environment where Smith added unique architectural finds and antique dining chairs to the existing custom built-in dining bench. She felt these additions added some Southern charm and tradition to an otherwise contemporary space.
In addition to the primary living areas, which include the living room, dining room, and kitchen, the property boasts four bedrooms, a casual game and entertainment room, a music room, and an office. Each of these rooms was also meticulously furnished and decorated by The Linen Duck. "Large homes on smaller lots can present unique floor plan challenges for homeowners," explained Smith. "Oftentimes, it is difficult to visualize a room's potential when it is empty. That’s why we ensure our design properties are fully furnished. Although none of these spaces follow simple square floor plans, with our thoughtful designs tailored to maximize their full potential, clients can see how even complex rooms offer numerous possibilities."
Designing a well-appointed space is indeed a considerable endeavor. "Each room must be purposefully designed, and function efficiently for its intended use, while simultaneously evoking a sense of harmony and beauty that invites the homeowner to live comfortably within it," remarked Smith. When asked about her favorite aspect of the design process, Smith responded, "Without a doubt, it's the installation week and the subsequent reveal.
This year, the Dream Home successfully sold all 22,222 available tickets generating $2.2 million in funds. News Channel 2 held the drawing live and revealed the winner on air June 23, 2024.
For additional information about the Nashville St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway for 2025, please visit dreamhome.org. Signature Homes will once again serve as their building partner for 2025, with construction likely to take place in one of their newly developed subdivisions in Franklin. The Linen Duck is committed to continuing support as a furnishing partner.
To donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, visit stjude.org.
This might be a common sentiment among designers; however, as someone deeply immersed in creativity who is frequently navigating through various challenges and sometimes significant issues along the way, to witness the vision materialize is truly rewarding and motivates me to repeat this journey continually." n
All furnishings and accessories showcased in this project are available for purchase at The Linen Duck. In support of St. Jude, The Linen Duck will graciously donate 10% of the proceeds from items purchased from the Dream Home collection. Additionally, numerous featured items offer customization options to better suit your preferences. For personalized solutions and extensive design services, we cordially invite you to visit their showroom and design center located at 109 E. 6th Street in downtown Columbia, Tennessee. Life is often described as a journey. A metaphor that captures the essence of the ups and downs, achievements, or challenges that test our resilience along the way. Journeys are also often shared and eight years ago, Jake Allyn, costar of Someone Like You, received a voice note from Josh Plasse, actor and writer, about a small-town American family that took the two of them on the RIDE of their lives.
RIDE, released on June 14, 2024, is an indie film that Allyn starred in, directed, and co-wrote with Plasse about the rodeo, both the sport and the way of life it represents. Allyn, who lives in Nashville and shines as an actor and writer, explained how he got his start in the industry. “It was definitely writing. My dad is a writer, my brother is a writer, so it's kind of the family business. Once I started to get into acting, I realized my best way into acting was writing. Not only being able to write my own rules or create my own projects but writing a lot for every character it's definitely a part of my process.”
The film is captivating from the second it begins. During the opening credits, you shadow a cowboy as he walks to ride, view old photos of bull riders and shining belt buckles, hear the snorts of the bull, and jump into the chute to ride which instantly sends you on a journey of cowboy life. “The photos at the beginning of the movie are not stock rodeo photos but are photos from actors in the movie, C. Thomas Howell and Forrie J. Smith, who are both real-life cowboys. These childhood photos are authentic and not props. The belt buckles and boots are actual cowboy gear too. I'm very proud that we did our best to make a very authentic cowboy movie and a very authentic rodeo story,” said Allyn.
I'M VERY PROUD THAT WE DID OUR BEST TO MAKE A VERY AUTHENTIC COWBOY MOVIE AND A VERY AUTHENTIC RODEO STORY.
JAKE ALLYN
Set in Stephenville, Texas, famously known as “The Cowboy Capital,” RIDE portrays the struggles of a family grounded in three generations of bull riders as they navigate the challenges of the modern world. The story centers on John Hawkins (C. Thomas Howell), the family patriarch, who faces his toughest battle yet when his only daughter’s cancer demands expensive cell therapy.
In desperation, he teams up with his estranged son, Peter (Jake Allyn), an amateur bull rider, to secure funds before time runs out. John and Peter embark on a cowboy-style heist and though they succeed, the aftermath leaves them as reluctant murderers, with only the family elder, Al (Forrie J. Smith), to turn to for guidance. The stakes rise even higher when John’s wife, Sheriff Monica Hawkins (Annabeth Gish), takes on a case that threatens to unravel their entire family.
Amidst these tumultuous events, John and Peter find themselves emotionally held up, dragged across a metaphorical dirt arena they can’t escape. Yet, these tragic circumstances might just pull the family closer together if they can manage to do one crucial thing: Hold on. Like Peter said in the movie, “When that chute opens, all my pain, all that emptiness, just goes away. For eight seconds, it’s like all I got to do is hold on!”
The film has already received accolades. RIDE won Best Movie at the Western Heritage Awards and the Audience Winner at the Dallas International Film Festival. As Allyn accepted the Western Heritage Award his speech gave homage to the cowboy way of life.
TO RECEIVE THIS AWARD FROM A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE DEDICATED TO THE WESTERN WAY OF LIFE AND WITH THIS MANY COWBOY HATS, THIS MEANS THE WORLD TO ME IT’S WHAT THIS FILM STANDS FOR. WHEN I LOOK AT THAT AWARD I SEE MY NAME. MY PARENTS NAMED ME JAKE AFTER KEVIN COSTNER'S CHARACTER IN SILVERADO. SO MY WHOLE CHILDHOOD I WANTED TO BE JAKE WITH THE TWO-GUN RIG. I THOUGHT THAT WAS SO COWBOY. I SEE A 10-YEAR-OLD KID CRAWLING INTO MY PARENT'S BACK SEAT. WHENEVER WE WOULD GO ON ROAD TRIPS WE'D HAVE THIS LITTLE TV AND I'D WATCH LONESOME DOVE THE WHOLE WAY JUST ON REPEAT. I THOUGHT THAT WAS A COWBOY.
JAKE ALLYN AT
I ALSO SEE A YOUNG FILMMAKER CALLING HIS STUNT COORDINATOR TO TELL HIM THAT THE MOVIE AND THE JOB THAT I PROMISED HIM WAS GONE. WE WERE A MONTH OUT FROM SHOOTING AND THE FINANCES HAD FALLEN APART. SIX MONTHS LATER THAT SAME STUNT COORDINATOR DROVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY JUST SO WE COULD SHOOT THIS FILM WITH THE SAME BULL RIDING GEAR THAT WE TRAINED WITH IN LOCKHART. HE WORKED SEVEN DAYS A WEEK ON THE MOVIE, ALL IN THE DEAD OF WINTER. HE DID EVERY DIRTY JOB I ASKED OF HIM, NEVER COMPLAINED ONCE AND WHEN WE WRAPPED THE FILM, HE GAVE ME ALL THE CREDIT. I REALIZE NOW THAT THAT IS COWBOY. YOU SEE, MY WHOLE LIFE I THOUGHT I WANTED TO BE LIKE THESE COWBOYS I'D SEEN ON TV. REALLY I JUST WANT TO HELP TELL YOUR STORIES LIKE [STUNT COORDINATOR] JODY STELZIG.
JAKE ALLYN AT THE 2024 WESTERN HERITAGE AWARDS
RIDE hits close to home, having been filmed during live rodeos in Tennessee and Kentucky. It also features Nashville country artists Bones Owens and American Idol star Laci Kaye Booth and local actors Josh Plasse and Scott Reeves, whom Allyn met while working on Someone Like You. The film boasts a cast including former rodeo champions, C. Thomas Howell and Forrie J. Smith, who bring the utmost authenticity to a film made by cowboys for cowboys.
Allyn concluded, “It is a rodeo movie, but bull riding is a metaphor for life. In the movie, life will throw you around, toss you off, and hurt you. You will have heroic moments and tragic moments, but if you just keep it simple at the end of the day, life is just like bull riding. It is about holding on to your family, your values, your way of life, and your identity. I think in one way or another, that is what we are all trying to do, no matter what we do as a profession or a sport.”
RIDE stands for the western way, gives a voice to the quiet cowboy, and reminds audiences that the toughest ride of all is a bull called life. No matter how hard you fight, whether you make it or not, the bull always chucks you. Always. “I am a bull,” Peter said. n
RIDE is now showing in theaters near you and streaming online! Follow Jake Allyn on social media at @jakeallyn85 or RIDE at @ride_movie
HOSTED BY BONE AND JOINT INSTITUTE OF TENNESSEE
Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee will host their third annual Skeleton Gala on October 26, 2024, in Liberty Hall at The Factory at Franklin. The masqueradethemed black-tie event is Bone and Joint Institute’s primary fundraiser and will benefit the Bone and Joint Fund of the Williamson Health Foundation. Attendees can enjoy dinner, drinks, including a signature cocktail, a silent auction, and dancing, featuring the dynamic band Burning Las Vegas.
Bone and Joint Institute is committed to giving back to the community in many ways, but this year’s gala proceeds will support the sports medicine program that serves student-athletes in Williamson County. In partnership with Williamson Health, Bone and Joint Institute provides physician and athletic training coverage to the Williamson County Schools as a service to the community.
“We don’t just provide services to the community, we are part of the community,” said Casey Davidson, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon and physician chair of the Bone and Joint Fund of the Williamson Health Foundation. “Our team loves being able to pour back into the community, support local students, and also honor our late founder, Dr. Craig Ferrell.”
To further Dr. Ferrell’s legacy, the group also plans to provide additional funds to the Craig Ferrell Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Skeleton Gala. Named in honor of Dr. Ferrell, these scholarships are given to Williamson County high school students who are pursuing a college degree in health sciences.
“Support for the Skeleton Gala has been tremendous, and we are hoping to build on that to host a bigger and better event this year to be able to continue to support students in the communities where we live and work,” said Davidson. n

is a crucial mineral found all over our body, in food, and supplements. It's mainly inside our cells, where it plays a huge role in making energy and protecting our DNA. With over 300 jobs in our bodies, magnesium helps break down food for energy, build proteins, and keep our muscles and nerves working well. It also helps control our heart rate, blood clotting, and bone health. If our levels of magnesium are imbalanced, it can disrupt these crucial functions.
According to the Institute of Medicine, it's recommended that women consume 310-360mg of magnesium daily, while men should aim for 400-410mg. However, modern diets increasingly rely on processed foods, which typically contain lower levels of magnesium than whole foods. As a result, studies indicate that Western diets have led to an average magnesium deficiency of 30-50%. This widespread deficiency highlights the challenge many people face in obtaining sufficient magnesium through their daily meals.
Signs that you might lack magnesium include feeling tired all the time, experiencing muscle cramps at night, tingling sensations, nausea, ongoing feelings of sadness or worry, and difficulty with bowel movements such as constipation.
Research has suggested that taking magnesium supplements could help improve performance in various types of exercise, including both aerobic activities like running and anaerobic activities like weightlifting. Magnesium is important for building proteins and producing energy in our bodies, which are essential processes for muscles to work properly during exercise. When we exercise, our bodies break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to provide energy for our muscles.
Research shows there is a significant association between very low magnesium intake and depression, especially in younger adults. Taking magnesium supplements every day can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety for everyone, regardless of age, gender, or how severe the individual's depression is.
Studies have found that people who consume more magnesium have on average a 15% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who consume less. This means that having enough magnesium in your diet can help lower your chances of getting type 2 diabetes. Magnesium helps your body properly use insulin and supports various processes involved in energy metabolism.
Magnesium levels in the brain have been linked to how long someone sleeps. This connection is because magnesium helps produce melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. When there's not enough magnesium, melatonin levels in the blood drop, which can affect sleep patterns. So, ensuring you have enough magnesium in your body might help improve sleep quality.
Low magnesium levels also lead to increased production of harmful compounds called reactive oxygen species (ROS). The reason behind this increased oxidative stress due to magnesium deficiency is a decrease in the activity of protective antioxidants. This deficiency sets the stage for chronic inflammation, which is linked to various long-term health issues.
Research has shown that magnesium is a safe and costeffective addition to migraine treatment. Magnesium supplementation can decrease migraine frequency, lower treatment expenses, and mitigate serious adverse effects.
With the multitude of magnesium supplements available, it can be daunting to determine which one suits your needs best. Understanding the common types of magnesium supplements is crucial as each variant offers advantages.
Magnesium oxide is often utilized as a stool softener because of lower absorption rates compared to its counterparts. While it excels in providing relief from constipation, its ability for other benefits is limited.
(Glycinate)
Magnesium bisglycinate stands out for its ability to be absorbed by the body, making it highly effective.
Magnesium bisglycinate is linked to inducing a calming effect, aiding in stress, sleep, and anxiety reduction, as well as alleviating muscle spasms. Additionally, it has been shown to aid in athletic performance by enhancing muscle function and preventing cramping.
Magnesium threonate has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier more effectively than other forms of magnesium supplements. This unique characteristic makes it particularly promising for mitigating symptoms of depression, anxiety, sleep, and migraines.
Visit rxcompoundcentre.com to learn more about magnesium, where you can find all you need to know about this amazing mineral. Information on magnesium resources is provided, along with recommendations for high-quality supplements and natural sources of magnesium.
Dr. Jonathan Bain, PharmD, BCCCP, BCPS-AQ, owner of the RX Compound Centre in Columbia, Tennessee, is also available to answer any questions about magnesium or any prescriptions you may have. Give him a call at (931) 388-3999 and follow them on social media at @rxcompound
Before considering magnesium supplementation, it's always wise to chat with a healthcare professional. While magnesium can be beneficial for some, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Factors like existing health conditions, medications, and individual needs can play a role in its effectiveness and safety. Take care, be informed, and consult with your doctor to see if magnesium supplementation is the right choice for you. n

Life insurance is a powerful tool. Buying it now ensures you take care of your loved ones and offers peace of mind for the family. If you have people who depend on you, life insurance is an essential and critical part of a comprehensive financial plan that provides protection and security for your loved ones.
The intent of life insurance is a death benefit that provides for your family's needs and covers expenses. This could mean replacing your income or paying off debt if you pass away, or a policy simply to cover final expenses and burial costs. Every situation is different, but choosing the right amount is crucial to safeguard financial security for those you care about and can help ensure there is not a drastic lifestyle change should something happen.
YOUR SAVINGS, DEBTS, INCOME, AND FAMILY SITUATION ALL PLAY ROLES IN CALCULATING HOW MUCH LIFE INSURANCE A PERSON NEEDS.
One of the first questions you should ask yourself when buying life insurance is, “How much coverage do I need?” Several methods exist to calculate the right amount and it is important to consider all factors during the process to better assess your family's long-term needs. Your savings, debts, income, and family situation all play roles in calculating how much life insurance a person needs.
MULTIPLY YOUR INCOME BY 10 is a simple and widely used guideline to estimate the amount of life insurance coverage needed. This rule suggests that you should aim to have a life insurance policy worth approximately ten times your annual income. Here's why and how it works:
Income Replacement: The primary purpose of this rule is to replace the lost income your family would face if you were no longer around. By multiplying your annual income by 10, you ensure your family has enough funds to cover living expenses for about ten years, giving them time to adjust and find alternative sources of income if needed.
Simplicity: This rule is easy to understand, making it accessible for individuals who might find more complex financial planning methods daunting.
Baseline Coverage: It provides a rough estimate and a baseline for further calculations. While it doesn't take into account all individual circumstances, it offers a starting point for determining an adequate coverage amount.
Keep in mind this rule is helpful as a quick estimate. However, it may not be suitable for everyone as it does not consider specific factors such as debts and liabilities, number and age of dependents, future expenses, savings, assets, or spousal income.
For a more accurate and personalized assessment, it's advisable to consider other methods alongside the Multiply by 10 Rule, such as the DIME method, a more detailed approach to determining the appropriate amount of life insurance coverage needed. DIME stands for Debt, Income, Mortgage, and Education, representing the key financial obligations to consider. By adding together these four components, one can get a comprehensive estimate of the life insurance coverage needed. Beyond these amounts, think about funeral expenses, the type of policy, Term Life versus Permanent Life, and any riders to customize a policy.
Below are financial obligations you may want to take into consideration for calculating your policy coverage:
Income replacement. Multiply the salary you want to replace for the number of years you want to replace it. You’ll want this income replacement to cover current and future expenses.
Mortgage. Include the mortgage balance so your family can stay in their home without fear of losing it.
Other large debts. If your family would struggle with other large debts if you pass away unexpectedly then add those amounts in.
Children's college tuition. Calculate the tuition money to ensure your children can pay for college.
Existing life insurance. Subtract any other life insurance that you already have. Be careful about relying on supplemental life insurance through work. It doesn’t always go with you if you change jobs.
Savings. Subtract any savings your family would use to pay expenses.
Remember, these general rules and formulas are just guidelines. You may have additional assets or obligations that need consideration when evaluating life insurance. Ultimately, the best coverage amount is the one that gives you the most reassurance your family will be well taken care of, even if you are not around to provide for them.

Iamso excited to invite you into the shop for a summer evening of conversations, flower class, and dinner. We will talk about tablescapes, arranging flowers, and share a delicious meal together. We will greet you with passed hors d'oeuvres at the door while you shop with your 20% discount. We'll chat about the two tables I'll be setting with my personal china collection and entertaining essentials from Hester & Cook and Caspari. It will be a wonderful round-up of chatting about entertaining in our homes and all the possibilities.
"Breaking bread around the table," is a phrase that is rich in history and meaning. Breaking bread is thought of as sharing a meal together and good food is wonderful, but many feel it is more about the relationship than the actual food. For me, loving to cook, is about who I am serving and the joy it brings me! We will gather around the table, share a summer dinner, talk about tablescapes and recipes, and enjoy dessert while learning how to arrange grocery store flowers. Our classes are informal and we love the discussions that come from comments and questions. It is a time of fellowship and getting to know our customers better. Our guests can shop our entire store and checkout using their Dinner & Flowers 20% discount. You'll leave with a complimentary swag bag of recipes, cocktail napkins, and other entertaining essentials.
This is the perfect time to meet up with friends and enjoy a summer evening together. Look at those calendars, call your friends, or better yet it could be a great date night! We love it when the husbands are in the shop. n

BEFORE THEY CAN GUIDE, THEY NEED YOU BY THEIR SIDE

is a powerful way to contribute to the community. Helping others brings a deep sense of fulfillment and knowing that your efforts positively impact others is incredibly rewarding. Debbie Greene, a Columbia resident, combined her love for dogs with volunteering for the Guide Dog Foundation and is making a difference in Middle Tennessee and beyond.
Since 1946, the Guide Dog Foundation has trained and placed guide and service dogs to help increase independence and mobility for individuals who are blind, have low vision, or other disabilities. The Foundation is accredited and certified demonstrating adherence to the highest standards for the humane and ethical treatment of dogs during their training programs.
For more than 75 years, the Foundation has been focused on improving the quality of life for the visually impaired by providing them with a highly trained guide dog and training at no cost. The volunteers play a crucial role in the guide dog program as they provide experience and socialization for the puppies in realworld settings preparing them for formal training.
Greene has fostered puppies through the puppy raising program for more than 25 years. Her dedication to helping puppies become guide dogs has taken her on a journey where she has successfully raised 17 puppies and currently has her 18th puppy, Jet, at her house. We got to play with Jet while he wasn’t working and see his training in action. We asked Greene to share her experiences and provide the readers with information on the Guide Dog Foundation.
How did you get started with the Guide Dog Foundation and when did you get your first puppy?
I originally started raising for Southeastern Guide Dogs after I saw an article in Southern Living magazine. The article talked about puppy raising and I thought I could do that; however, it took me a while to convince them because there wasn't anyone in Tennessee in the program. In 1997, I finally got my first dog, Kevin, a lab golden mix. I started with the Guide Dog Foundation in 2004, raising poodles for people with documented allergies, or a family member who needs a dog with less dander. The Guide Dog Foundation is the only school that works with poodles. Jet is my current poodle puppy. I got him when he was 10 weeks old and he is now 10 months.
Will you tell us more about the puppies in the Guide Dog Foundation program?
The Guide Dog Foundation is based out of Smithtown, New York. At around 10 weeks old the puppies are put on a transport that brings about 8 to 10 puppies down to the Middle Tennessee area. When the puppies are between 14-18 months old, they will go back to New York to begin formal training.
As a puppy raiser, I am training Jet in my home and teaching him basic obedience and house manners. I train him to stay off the furniture because the person who may end up with Jet may not want him on the furniture. For sleeping, a puppy starts in a crate by my bed. At six months, I took Jet out of the crate and trained him to sleep on a dog bed by my bed, and he knows that’s where he has to stay and sleep at night.
Potty training is also very important as they have to go on command. We teach them to go busybusy or just go busy on different surfaces, so when the dog is working it won’t have to go to relieve themself. Quite a few of the guide dogs go to big cities so it is important that their handler can easily take care of them and they will go on command as directed on any surface.
The puppies are fed three times a day on a schedule and at six months we start feeding them twice a day. To make the transition easier for the dogs, they are fed a preferred dog food that is readily available around the country in grocery stores. The dogs always have free access to water, but as puppies, we need to be careful they don’t drink too much or play in the water.
Now keep in mind, that whoever gets Jet or one of the other dogs may change the rules and if they want him to sleep in bed at night with them or they don’t mind if he gets on the furniture, that is up to them and perfectly fine. But the recipient is presented with a dog that knows it is not allowed on the furniture or in the bed.
THE GUIDE DOG FOUNDATION IS BASED OUT OF SMITHTOWN, NEW YORK. AT AROUND 10 WEEKS OLD, THE PUPPIES ARE PUT ON A TRANSPORT THAT BRINGS ABOUT 8 TO 10 PUPPIES DOWN TO THE MIDDLE TENNESSEE AREA.
What happens if the puppy isn’t a good candidate for a guide dog?
If a dog is not happy, they will discontinue formal training. However, they will see if the dog could excel in another service such as bomb detection. If another service area is not found, then the puppy is offered back to the puppy raiser and if they do not take the dog there is a waitlist of people wanting to adopt a dog from the school. Due to the cost of training the dogs, the fee is approximately $2,000 to adopt a dog.
How would one get involved in the Guide Dog Foundation program and join the puppy raising team?
There is an application process and people can visit guidedog.org to apply. Area coordinators in the Southeast Region process applications and if it is for the Middle Tennessee area I would eventually get involved because I work with the puppy raisers here. Right now, I am the only person puppy raising in the area as a dog in the Nashville area just left for formal training. But I would love to have more people involved locally.

THERE IS A LOT OF TIME AND LOVE INVESTED IN THESE DOGS WHEN YOU'RE A PUPPY RAISER, BUT IF THESE DOGS CAN TURN OUT TO HELP SOMEBODY, THERE'S NO GREATER FEELING.
What advice would you give someone looking to be a puppy raiser?
Well, it’s a lot of work, but you are going to fall in love with the dog. The only way I can turn them loose is by telling myself that I am fortunate not to need him. I want him, but I don't NEED him. The people that get these guide dogs, their lives are changed. I'm friends on Facebook with a lady who just got her third dog service dogs typically work for about eight years. She had to wait a little while between dogs and she said, ‘There's nothing like life with a dog. I can go out by myself; nobody has to go with me. I take my dog and we go where we need to go.’ It gives people freedom and that is very easy to take for granted. There is a lot of time and love invested in these dogs when you're a puppy raiser, but if these dogs can turn out to help somebody, there's no greater feeling. n
The journey of a future guide dog is a path that influences numerous lives. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train, and place one assistance dog. If you would like to learn more about the program or donate, visit guidedog.org and follow them on social media at @guidedogfoundation
JAY HOUCK, OWNER
What would you say to two high school sweethearts, madly in love their senior year in high school, who decided to pack up the girl’s 1988 Chevy S10 manual transmission, single cab, vinyl seat pickup, and run away? Oh, did I mention they had about $40 and some of the high school girl’s belongings?
This is how my wife, Andrea, and my story started living out of her truck, trying to figure out how to make it in this life! Fast forward 34 years later … Babe Ruth once said, "It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.”
I planted a church, Springs of Life Church, in the town we used to live in during the historic recession. This church was planted to bring hope and encouragement during a time when it was much needed, which is still running today. I also have a non-profit organization called Better Together Disaster Relief. This organization is designed to stir up love and good works in life's storms. We know there are natural storms, but there are also other storms that occur in families, so we want to be there for all storms.
I have been in the real estate industry since 2004. I have seen good markets and not-so-good markets. I have walked alongside clients through the best of times and also helped them through foreclosures and short sales. My mom once told me to "plug your nose and jump in the water" — what this means to me is, you don't walk away from clients or friends even when it gets tough — you tell them what they need to be told even when it's hard.
I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO HOME LOANS FOR OTHERS, WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN TURNED DOWN, NOT BECAUSE I AM BETTER, I JUST DON’T GIVE UP, AND FINDING PROGRAMS THAT MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE TO THAT PARTICULAR LOAN OFFICER.
This led me from being a realtor for 14 years to stepping into the mortgage industry, to now managing my branch here in beautiful Middle Tennessee. I have been able to do home loans for others, when they have been turned down, not because I am better, I just don’t give up, and finding programs that may not be available to that particular loan officer. One reason I can do this is because I am a mortgage broker and I am able to shop for more loans, which is a great asset for investors too! Another asset for my clients is I went through Ramsey Solution's Financial Coach Training. With this training, not only am I able to originate loans, but I am able to guide you to becoming financially free!
I want to thank you for taking the time to get to know a little about me and if you want to know more about my life story please reach out and give me a call or text at (615) 939-2068 or email me at jayh@arborfg.com! We’ll grab some coffee. I look forward to more conversations and helping you to achieve your financial goals through home loans. n
It’seasy to talk about caring for the community, but Williamson Health’s commitment to the residents of Williamson County is more than words. Now with more than 30 locations across the county—ranging from the system’s flagship acute-care hospital to orthopaedic urgent care and rehabilitation services, 18 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) rapid response units, numerous physician practices and more Williamson Health is elevating excellence in healthcare once again with the system’s newest clinic in Spring Hill.
“As Spring Hill continues to grow, we’re prepared to provide top-tier healthcare services to its residents,” said Phil Mazzuca, Williamson Health CEO. “We’ve been carefully planning and building this new clinic for more than a year and are proud to expand access to exceptional care throughout Williamson County.”
The new clinic, which offers primary care and other specialists, laboratory services, orthopaedic care and physical therapy, is one of five Williamson Health locations in the rapidly growing Spring Hill community. It joins another primary care, a walk-in clinic, and two EMS stations, all focused on ensuring residents can get exceptional care close to home.
“With the continued population growth in Spring Hill, the expansion of primary care physicians and services for this community has been a top priority,” said Tim Burton, associate administrator of Williamson Health Medical Group. “Our new clinic is open and ready to care for new patients who may have been delaying primary care for a variety of reasons or who simply want to stay closer to home for their doctors’ appointments.”
The new clinic is staffed by several providers who are already active members of the Spring Hill community.
Spring Hill and Thompson’s Station residents and Williamson Health Medical Group physicians Paula Dunn, M.D., and Sanford Kim, M.D., are based in the new clinic, which provides primary care, family and internal medicine, as well as laboratory services.
Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee also offers orthopaedic urgent care, physical therapy and an orthopaedic physician clinic at the new location, staffed by Matt Anderson, M.D., who specializes in sports medicine, and Preet Gurusamy, M.D., a joint replacement specialist. Andrea Pierce, PT, and Angel Shipman, PTA, both of whom are longtime Spring Hill residents, will provide physical therapy services.
“As a resident of Spring Hill, I love that the new clinic allows patients south of Franklin to receive the medical care and rehabilitation they need without the stress of traffic or the need to miss work or school because of our convenient location and hours,” Pierce said.
Dr. Anderson is set to serve as the team physician for Summit High School during the 2024-2025 school year. He’s excited to embrace additional ways to serve the Spring Hill community.
“A lot of our patients currently live in Spring Hill or commute from further south,” Dr. Anderson said. “So, to bring a clinic location closer to the patient population is really exciting. I’ll also be closer to the athletes and students for whom I provide care, so it’s nice to feel like I’m a bigger part of the community and playing a role in providing more convenient care for our patients.”
Spring Hill residents are receiving a top-notch patient experience and highquality care at the clinic. The space is brand new, the providers said, with stateof-the-art equipment and technologies. “Having orthopaedic specialists, physical therapists, and primary care providers in the same building also offers patients greater access to comprehensive care,” Dr. Anderson said.
“There is a tremendous amount of collaboration and synergy between providers,” said Dr. Anderson. “So, if a patient presenting for a routine checkup has a muscular or skeletal issue, it will be easy to set up a seamless consult and transfer. This new clinic really serves as a comprehensive center for health maintenance for Spring Hill residents.”
PRIMARY CARE: the clinic is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and is accepting new patients. Call (615) 791-2380 to schedule an appointment.
ORTHOPAEDIC URGENT CARE: open seven days a week, the Bone and Joint Institute clinic is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Walk-ins at the orthopaedic urgent care are accepted, but patients may also schedule an appointment online at BoneAndJointTN.org or by calling (615) 791-2070. Physical therapy is available from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Fridays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling (615) 791-2071. n

Allenbrooke Farms, located at 2023 Dr. Robertson Road in Spring Hill, Tennessee, is an organic produce and floral farm owned and operated by Daniel Allen, a third-generation Tennessee farmer, and his wife Emily. Established in 2011, Allenbrooke Farms began by offering organic community-supported agriculture (CSA) shares to the local community. Despite the decline of local farms in the Spring Hill area, Allenbrooke Farms has remained a staple.
The Allens expanded the farm's offerings in 2016 by opening the Venue Barn, a modern barn primarily used for weddings, providing a picturesque organic setting. The venue, however, is versatile and available for various events. As a family-owned and operated farm, Allenbrooke Farms prides itself on being inclusive and welcoming to all.
One of the unique attractions of Allenbrooke Farms is its status as a working family farm, which offers stunning floral fields as backdrops for wedding photography. These fields are in full bloom from May to September, enhancing the farm’s appeal compared to other venues in the area.
In 2022, Farmer Dan opened an organic farm store on-site at Allenbrooke Farms. The store is open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. From June through September, the farm offers FARM FRESH BOXES without any commitment or signup. These boxes, available during regular store hours, contain a half bushel of seasonal organic produce and are priced between $40 and $45. No big box store can match Allenbrooke's quality and fair pricing for organic, clean, and untainted food. This year, the farm is growing a variety of produce, including tomatoes available in July, potatoes, onions, mixed lettuce, kale, broccoli, cabbage, beets, chard, peppers, herbs, and florals.
The introduction of Farm Fresh Boxes replaced the yearly CSA share option when the farm store opened. Additionally, as Spring Hill's first and oldest U-Pick farm, Allenbrooke offers U-pick organic strawberries from early May through early June, and U-pick flowers starting in June. Although strawberry season is brief in Tennessee, it is renowned as the state's sweetest season.
Allenbrooke charges $5 per pound for berries and accepts both cash and card payments. Farmer Dan began welcoming the public into his fields in 2019 and introduced U-pick reservations in 2024 to accommodate the area's growing demand. The farm continues to expand its acreage each year as more people discover it. "It's a great problem to have, to say the least," remarked the Allens.
The farm began cultivating hemp as a commodity crop in 2018. The hemp is processed into terpene oil, which is then sold within the hemp industry supply chain. Terpenes, the essential oils of the hemp plant, contain zero cannabinoids. All commodity crops at Allenbrooke are grown organically, without the use of even certified organic chemicals. Allenbrooke practices regenerative farming, which focuses on enhancing soil health. As Farmer Dan explains, "We are focused on growing and building clean soil, and the crops are just a by-product of farming healthy soils."
A few years later in 2020, Allenbrooke Farms launched its consumable brand under its sister company, Sinsemilias. These products are available at the farm store and online at allenbrookefarms.com, which redirects to Sinsemilias for ordering. Sinsemilias was founded during the pandemic with the help of Allen’s wife, Emily, a hemp farmer who recognized the need for clean consumables, especially for local area mothers. They began with home deliveries, and the business quickly grew. Women in Tennessee have been a significant driving force behind the brand. Emily humorously notes the irony of the hemp plant being female, stating, "Those two elements of the brand represent Mother Nature in her true divine." Both Daniel and Emily affirm, "There's been no looking back, only forward!"
They hope that federal rescheduling of hemp will allow Tennessee to advance with the times, enabling the farm to grow clean medical hemp for the state’s most vulnerable populations. The Allenbrooke farmers encourage their community to seek out and "Support Local Organic Farmers!" emphasizing that they are right in the community's backyard. They believe the world needs more organic farmers.
Last year, adding to the farm’s allure, Allenbrooke introduced two glamping sites that provide unique camping experiences on the farm. These tents offer a fun option for adventurous guests and showcase the farm's diverse offerings beyond events and agriculture. Each site situated on the farm can comfortably accommodate up to four individuals, with the option to rent a pop-up tent for additional guests. The tents are set on all-weather platforms, are weatherproof, feature a queen bed, and have mounted wall heaters. Allenbrooke’s peak camping season runs from April through November.
For more information about the farm and glamping, visit allenbrookefarms.com or follow along on their socials to stay in the know of upcoming farm events and store happenings at @allenbrookefarms #nofarmersnofoodnofuture #supportlocalfarmers. n
