Chairman's Message

Recently AAI airports have received various accolades at the Swachhata Awards 2019 announced by Ministry of Civil Aviation airports Namely Chennai, Trivandrum, Indore, Surat, Patna, Raipur, Varanasi and Agartala airports to begin with and the findings will be shared with other airports to implement similar measures. Shri Arvind Singh Chairman, AAI

Dear Readers, Having firm belief in holistic & sustainable development, AAI started a pioneering initiative to make its airports single-use plastic free a year ago. It gives me immense pride in sharing that 85 of our airports are now 'Single-Use Plastic Free' & many of them have recently completed a year. These airports took various steps to eliminate single-use plastic by promoting usage of eco-friendly sustainable alternatives and installation of plastic bottle crushing machines. Green corridors are important in ensuring successful organ transplants. It helps in saving precious time that otherwise would have been lost in normal transit of the vital organs and gives the recipient a fresh new lease of life. Recently, a live donor heart was air transported from AAI's Pune Airport to Delhi’s IGI Airport. This was made possible by efficient AAI team creating shortest air route to transport the organ all the way from Pune to Delhi, coordination with Indigo Airlines and priority security clearance by CISF personnel. Embarking a huge step towards adopting best practices to mitigate bird/wildlife hazard at Indian Civil airports, AAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, GoI. SACON will undertake the study on wild life control of eight critical 4

March 2020

Recently AAI airports have received various accolades at the Swachhata Awards 2019 announced by Ministry of Civil Aviation. Various airports were adjudged Clean & Safe Airports in different categories on various parameters. Kolkata Airport was declared the Cleanest Airport in category of airports with annual passenger traffic of 5 million & above followed by Chennai and Jaipur. In the category of the airports with between 1.5 million & 5 million, Madurai Airport bagged the first prize with Chandigarh and Trivandrum securing second and third place respectively. Udaipur, Vadodara and Vijayawada Airport grabbed the first, second and third position in third category of airports with annual passenger traffic between 1 million & 1.5 million. AAI as an airport operator and leading ANS Provider is unceasingly working towards facilitating air passengers ensuring their safety, security and leisure. Persisting in its commitment towards enhancing passengers’ comfort, AAI has taken a major step by operationalizing In-Line Baggage Screening System at Chennai, Goa and Kolkata airports. This system will ensure faster check-in, resulting in smooth passenger flow at AAI airports and convenience to the passengers. The facility is being extended to seven more airports namely Lucknow, Varanasi, Trivandrum, Calicut, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Srinagar airports in the next few months. AAI recently hosted the 36th Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) Interoperability Working Group (IWG) meeting in February 2020. The meeting

was attended by IWG Co-Chairpersons, senior officials from DGCA, ISRO and delegates from IWG member countries like USA, Europe, Japan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea etc. The main focus of the meeting was on the status of SBAS procedures, implementation and plans along with various technical sessions. With the implementation of SBAS services, seamless navigation for safe & efficient aircraft operations can be provided all over the world using satellitebased technology. As part of a globally thriving aviation market, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is committed towards the development of airport infrastructure and ensuring better maintenance and operations to provide world-class services. Recently, Concession Agreements were signed between AAI and the Adani Group for the management and development of Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Mangaluru airports. Under the agreement, the Adani Group subsidiaries will hold management control over the airports for a period of 50 years. The concession fee that AAI would receive will be utilised for the maintenance and upgradation of the smaller airports. This will also help in achieving the ambitious target of development of 100 more airports by 2024 to support the RCSUDAN scheme. Showcasing the sporting spirit, this year AAI won Gold in All India Public Sector Badminton Tournament for Men & Women and the Runners-up Trophy in 40th & 18th National Team Chess Championship 2020 for Men & Women. As the Spring season ushers in with the festival of colours around the corner, I wish all the readers a very happy Holi. Happy Reading!! AirportsAuthorityOfIndiaOfficial

Engineers India Ltd.

Engineering excellence EIL has emerged as a leading design and engineering consultancy company across the hydrocarbon value chain - J C Nakra, CMD, EIL, shares his vision and plans for the company with Airports India Can you take us through the journey of EIL and major milestones? Also tell us about your geo-strategic reach. Engineers India Limited (EIL), a Navratna PSU, under the aegis of MoPNG, began its journey in 1965 and has played a yeoman role in shaping the country’s hydrocarbon landscape. During five-and-a-half decades of our service to the nation, we have our footprints in 20 out of 23 operating refineries in India including 10 grassroot refineries, and 10 out of 11 petrochemical plants. We have also been providing our services in Non-Ferrous metallurgy and Fertiliser sector since the 1970s. In 1997, we got listed on the BSE and NSE, and GoI accorded us the Navratna status in 2014. EIL is currently providing services for 9 MMTPA grassroot Rajasthan Refinery and Petrochemical Project including other brownfield refinery expansion projects of clients like IOCL, HPCL etc, and 1.2 MMTPA Ethylene Cracker for HMEL, which is the largest in India, is also being executed by EIL. BS-VI projects for various PSU and private clients being executed by EIL have already started producing the desired quality fuel. EIL is also engaged in the Pipeline Projects of Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Project and is playing a pivotal role in the country’s quest towards gasbased economy. Recently, we also provided services in the construction of underground crude oil storage caverns of 5.33 MMT capacity at Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru and Padur. In the infrastructure domain, we are currently associated in the major projects of UIDAI, Namami Gange, National High Speed Rail, AAI, IIM Nagpur, IIT Patna and MHA. We forayed into international territories way back in 1973. Our client base is across Africa, Middle East, Southeast and Central Asia, and our major clients are ADNOC,

GASCO, Orpic, Dangote Group, ERL, Petronas and Qatar Petroleum. Currently, EIL is providing consultancy services to the world’s largest single-train grassroot Dangote Refinery of around 30 MMTPA capacity in Nigeria, integrated with Petrochemical. EIL is also providing its services for setting up 1.5 MMTPA first grassroot refinery in Mongolia, under the Line of Credit from GoI. We have a state of the art engineering office in Abu Dhabi and inspection offices in London, Milan and Shanghai. We also have a wholly-owned subsidiary, CEIL, which provides TPI and certification services.

Please share a brief about your diversification initiatives. While hydrocarbon remains our focus area, to leverage our design and engineering capabilities, we have diversified in strategic sectors like Infrastructure, Alternate Fuels and Fertilisers. In early 2000, we diversified in infrastructure domain and today we are providing services for green buildings, institutional campuses, airports and high-speed rail project. We also have 26 per cent equity in Ramagundam Fertilizer Project, which is in the final stages of completion. Other emerging areas like 2G-Ethanol, Waste to Fuel and LNG have also started showing good results. Please provide a detailed overview of the range of services EIL provides in various segments of its operations. EIL is the only player in the Indian hydrocarbon sector that provides complete

J C Nakra, CMD, EIL

‘Concept to Commissioning’ services under one roof and has emerged as a ‘Total Solution’ engineering consultancy company. We provide services like preparation of feasibility studies, process design, detail engineering, procurement, site supervision, project management, independent engineering, commissioning assistance and troubleshooting. Being a technology-neutral company, we have no tie-ups with any licensor and hence are able to recommend our clients what is best for them. This is one of our greatest strengths. The manpower required is highly technical in this industry. How do you recruit, develop, retain and motivate the world-class talent? Employees being our biggest asset, we believe in ‘Delivering Excellence through People’. Consulting businesses, specifically oil and gas, require manpower with high technical skills and commercial acumen. This is reflected in the composition of our manpower. Out of about 2800 employees, around 85 per cent have technical background like BTech, MTech, PhD etc. EIL is a sought-after employer amongst the youngsters from premium engineering colleges in India. We recruit people for their attitude and desire for learning. The skill set for any particular aspect can be easily developed and a lot of emphasis is given on training. Art of local innovation so many other recipes like the Arab and Jewish Muttamala, and then there is the Kerala version of the Dutch bread Breudher.

This book is all about the love for history, food and culture, shares Tanya Abraham to Airports India The book began because of her love for history and culture. Coming from parents of two different Catholic communities in Kerala, it always intrigued her as to how these communities so similar in many ways stayed culturally quite apart. Coupled with her desire to learn about unique cultures in Kerala, the spice trade that changed the flavour of the land, and the emergence of completely new foods from ingredients such as religion, customs and local innovations absolutely amazed her. It began with the research - how and from where these recipes emerged. Then she documented (authentic) recipes, traversing the communities which she felt in time could vanish. Excerpts from the interview: What surprising facts about Kerala cuisine did you encounter while bringing this book out? The book is different because it traces the emergence of cuisines from the emergence of new communities because of foreign trade influence. Foreign trade refers to the spice trade, with people plying the seas to reach Kerala for spices. The centuries of trade 24

What is the inspiration for this book? I grew up in Fort Cochin, a small town once colonised by three European powers. Not too far away from our anscestoral home was Jew Town. As a child I witnessed the sharing of food from homes and thus in turn the ancient cultures. My parents families also cooked dishes differently . Some are called by the same name but made differently. This had me questioning. Besides food and my grandmother’s kitchen were truly the soul of our joint family household. Not just the home, but in many ways the town too. It was a fascinating childhood. Published by Roli Books

naturally caused an amalgamation of cultures. Because of religious practices, these cultures stayed quite unscathed. It is most likely that other cultures may have been present too, brought from other nations to Kerala. Thus, it’s a very specific aspect of Kerala cuisine which is being covered in the book. Some of the recipes maybe commonly known. But reading it from the perspective of the research will give a whole new perspective to them. The food in Kerala truly is witness to its multicultural soil. To me, this is fascinating. You give an eclectic collection of recipes, like the pancakes with a twist. What are some of the dishes that are unique to the region? Wherever long term foreign culture (here, from the Arabs or Portuguese or the Dutch etc) is present, something new can be expected. Adding local ingredients like coconut to a crepe (commonly called pancake in Kerala) or making a version of the appam with coconut milk and banana and steaming it, is from Portuguese influence. The Vindhaloo in Kerala is unique to Kerala alone, so are

What do you think is the major ingredient used in Keralan food? Pepper for one was always an ingredient. Later when red chillies came to Kerala shores, it too. Coconut can't be separated from the cuisines of Kerala, it is found in various forms in dishes. Kerala cuisine is, in a way, a mix and match of various ingredients; but spices from the Malabar remain its core. There are so many cookbooks already published. How is your book distinct from them? The title says it- it’s history and the ancient spice trade. The recipes are not mine but documentation from old families in Kerala. The goal was to preserve culture through food and Kerala is unique because of the spice trade. It’s is a book tracing the emergence of a unique set of recipes all of which stemmed from the spice trade but took upon different flavours. What is your favourite recipe from the book? Shrimp Pada is my favourite! My grandmother made it often. It’s a kind of pickle but eaten even with bread. Caramel custard with nutmeg is comfort food. AAI_Official

Make the most of indexation benefit available on Debt Mutual Funds Every year, on what is popularly known as Black Friday (the Friday after Thanksgiving Day) in western countries, shopaholics and the not so shopaholics throng various malls and retail Ms. Shyamali Basu, Senior Vice President outlets to get the best & Head - Products deals on everything & Marketing, HDFC from apparels to Asset Management gadgets and perfumes Co. Ltd. to sportswear. The temptation to shop extravagantly when anything is at a discount does not spare most mere mortals. Almost everyone has an inclination to get things at a lower cost, irrespective of what one is buying. One of the rare instances where one actually wants to see a higher cost of acquisition is for computation of taxes viz. tax on capital gains. Most of us hate paying taxes but we all have to pay them nonetheless. While one cannot run away from paying taxes, one can certainly make the most of existing tax provisions and make tax efficient investment decisions. One such tax efficient provision which investors can consider is the benefit of indexation available while computing long term capital gains on investment in debt mutual fund schemes. Gains made on investment in debt mutual funds held for

more than 36 months are considered as Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) Indexation is the method by which purchase price of an investment is adjusted for inflation (usually adjusted upwards, unless there is deflation). The Cost of Inflation Index (CII) is used to index the cost of acquisition of the debt mutual fund unit. The CII for each financial year is available on the income-tax website, incometaxindia.gov.in. If inflation has been high during the period between the purchase and sale of the investment, then the indexed cost of acquisition of the investment will be higher, reducing the gains that are liable for taxation. The indexed price so arrived at is used to calculate the capital gains on which LTCG tax of 20% plus surcharge (as applicable) plus education cess of 4% is charged. Further, the fact that the CII is defined for each financial year, means that one can actually end up getting benefit of 4 indexations while investing for a little over 3 years when one invests towards the end of a financial year. Investors can consider various debt mutual funds with different maturity profiles and credit quality like Short Duration Funds, Medium Duration Funds, Banking and PSU Funds, Corporate Bond Funds and Credit Risk Funds for a period of 3 years and above depending on their risk appetite.

To conclude, it is worth noting that debt funds offer well diversified portfolio as compared to traditional fixed income instruments like FDs etc. and are also more tax efficient compared to them owing to the benefit of indexation. Just like you hunt for discounts during Black Friday Sale, this March, explore the option of investing in Debt Mutual Funds for an investment horizon of 3 years and above to make the most of cost indexation benefit. The views expressed are author’s own views and not necessarily those of HDFC Asset Management Company Limited (HDFC AMC). The views are not an investment advice. Investors should obtain their own independent advice before taking a decision to invest in any securities. Mutual Fund investments are more volatile and riskier compared to traditional investment instruments. HDFC Mutual Fund/ AMC is not guaranteeing returns on any investments. Investors should be aware that the fiscal rules / tax laws may change and there can be no guarantee that the current tax position may continue indefinitely. In view of individual nature of tax consequences, investors should consult their professional tax advisor. MUTUAL FUND INVESTMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO MARKET RISKS, READ ALL SCHEME RELATED DOCUMENTS CAREFULLY.

AIRLINeS PERSPECTIVE

Boeing, ATR and Collins Aerospace have presented their view on support/ solution providing to equipage for existing aircraft fleets to make enable for SBAS-based operations. They also expressed their future plans to provide solutions for SBAS operations with upcoming updates. They explained the benefits of SBAS utilisation in aviation. During the deliberations, aircraft OEMs clarified that ATRs recently

supplied to Indian airline operators such as IndiGo Airlines, Alliance Air & SpiceJet have the GAGAN approach capability. Airline representatives also expressed their willingness to utilize GAGAN for approach/landing operations at the airports operated by ATR fleet. Air France and Japan Airline have presented their view on benefits of SBAS utilisation in respect of safety, customer satisfaction, fuel saving & noise exposure reduction and their readiness & status on the same. Airline industries appreciated organising of the event, which was beneficial for all aviation stakeholders to understand the SBAS readiness by various ANSPs and also the aircraft equipage. 31

AAI Update

no more long queues at AAI airports

with in-line baggage system Now passengers can directly go to airline counters and deposit their check-in baggage saving precious time at airports Words: Corp. Comm. Team, CHQ, AAI with inputs from Chennai, Goa & Kolkata Airports

I

n a bid to enhance passenger convenience at airports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated a facility of new In-Line Baggage System (ILBS), which is being installed in various airports across the country. The in-line baggage screening system means air travellers will have lesser queues near the X-ray machines to scan their baggage before check-in and will also result in smooth passenger flow at these airports. This would also enhance the safety and security of the aviation sector.

10 airports were identified for the implementation of the screening system with CTX scanners and this has been recently made operational at 3 airports, Chennai International Airport, Dabolim Airport, Goa, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata.

Enhancing passenger comfort at Chennai Airport

At Chennai Airport, total eight state-ofthe-art CTX (Computed Tomography X-ray) scanners have been deployed at Domestic (4) and International (4)

Terminals at a total cost of approximately `58 crores. At the International Terminal, the old EDS scanner have been replaced with the CTX scanner, whereas in Domestic Terminal Inline Scanning is being introduced for the first time. The Baggage Handling System (BHS) in both terminals is also upgraded with high performance PLC, VFD drives, conveyors and control system.

How does it work

The entire system works on a four-level design as per BCAS requirements and specifications. All passenger check-in bags are inducted at Airline Check-in counters and further travel on BHS conveyor to the CTX Scanner. An Automatic Tag Reader reads the Airline Baggage Tag and this information is used by BHS and CTX to track the bag.

Level-2 screener

Baggage handling system

At first level, the CTX Scanner scans the bags, provides 3D imaging and possible threat evaluation. At second level, trained and certified security screeners evaluate the bag image and threat metadata provided by CT scanner, to identify potentially harmful objects in a bag. CTX Scanner produces cross-sectional tomographic images of the contents of a piece of baggage by imaging multiple slices. The intense amount of computation required to interpret the CT scan images is a significant factor in the systems throughout and automatic threat detection performance.

BENEFITS OF ILBS •

Passengers will not have wait for long and get their registered baggage scanned before dropping at the check-in counters

Faster passenger processing, minimum queuing time, and less congestion at Check-In Area.

It will streamline the security screening process and add to passenger comfort.

Passengers can directly go to Airline counters and deposit their check-in baggage which will allow them to save at least 15 minutes.

passenger footfall, took a major leap forward in the direction of passenger facilitation with the start of new ILBS. The facility was started in phased manner to avoid any inconvenience to the passengers. First leg of the ILBS system started on January 31, 2020 followed by addition of second leg on February 3, 2020. With the addition of this best-in-class facility, passengers will now be able to save time in check-in process. They now can go directly to the check-in counter and drop their bag. Security screening of the luggage will now be carried out by 33

trained screeners of AAICLAS, a 100% subsidiary company of AAI. With continuous increase in number of passengers travelling through Goa Airport, this facility is surely going to streamline the security screening process and add to passenger comfort. Sh. Gagan Malik, Airport Director, Goa International Airport, said that "it is a big asset added to the infrastructure and all the measures have been taken to ensure its 100% serviceability." Goa got positive reactions from passengers after the addition of ILBS facility. “Goa is a major tourist destination for people around the world. Addition of ILBS facility is adding to their convenience. I am travelling with my family and feeling relaxed that I don’t have to carry my luggage to different areas,” said a passenger.

streamlining the security system at Kolkata Airport

ILBS became operational at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata, on February 17, 2020. This facility, having a total cost of 72 crores, has eight numbers of CTX Inline X-ray machines, one each for each check-in portals. At present seven (four Domestic and three International) system is operational. The one left (check in portal A which is used by Air Asia India and GoAir) for Domestic, is pending for interface of Baggage Handling System (BHS) and it is expected to be installed by June this year. Taking into consideration all the other parameters of Baggage handling system

at NSCBI Airport, each of the eight checkin portal lines, can handle approx. 1200 bags per hour. Passengers travelling from almost 205 domestic flights and 35 international flights will be benefited from this facility. The system will screen about 33,000 checked in bags of 220 plus flights that depart Kolkata daily.

ACHIEVeMENTS

Being a fully operational airport, the biggest challenge was to instal the ILBS without disturbing the normal operations. The installation was accomplished without hampering the operation even for a single minute. To complete the mammoth task, the airport team had to temporarily remove lots of conveyors and cables to make way for the CTX. Now, passengers can directly go to airline counters and deposit their

check-in baggage, which will save at least 15 minutes. Also, now there will be more space per passenger in check-in area as all the standalone XBis will be removed. Some of the standalone X-rays will be used in the Level 2 screening room of the new screening system as well as for International to Domestic transfers. A total of 42 BCAS certified screeners are at Level 2 and another 40 more screeners will be added in near future. This is a quantum jump in passenger services at NSCBI Airport, Kolkata and passenger feedbacks are very encouraging. Creating effective control and accountability in the screening system, ILBS will not only provide faster checkin and convenience for passengers, but will provide an enhanced level of security too.

This island is an archaic world in itself where you can find locals living in bamboo huts and cooking on fire. Abundance of natural beauty, diverse wildlife and impeccable serenity make this place a global phenomenon to experience. The island is also an important cultural centre of Assam. Many monasteries constructed by the Assamese Saint – Srimanta Sankardeva – still survive and depict the vibrant culture of Assam. The island also offers opportunities for birding enthusiasts. Both domestic and migratory birds, including storks, kingfisher, egret, purple moorhen and white-breasted waterhen can be spotted here. 47

With a noticeable spurt in the shooting of films and TV projects here, the state is set to emerge as a major film shoot destination in 2020. The film-friendly infrastructure of the state has been serving goals for cinema lovers over the years. According to Mr. Faiz Ahmed Kidwai (IAS), Secretary-Tourism, Govt of Madhya Pradesh and Managing Director, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, “The Bollywood producers and directors find this state more desirable as compared to other places not only because of its scenic beauty but also people here are very hospitable.” Having such a rich heritage, Madhya Pradesh has always encouraged

The three UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Khajuraho Temple, Sanchi Stupa and Bhimbetka Rock Shelters – have been acting as the jewels of the crown beholden by the state. Apart from these, the state glitters with Jai Vilas Palace, Rajgarh Palace, Mitawali or Mitaoli, Aterfort, and the Chhatris of Shivpuri. It has numerous wildlife hotspots with 11 national parks & 24 wildlife sanctuaries. But it's not just Bollywood, international film body Hollywood also had projects like “The Bear” by Paramount Pictures, “A Suitable Boy” by BBC Production prized up in state's collection. Many other recent movies shot here include Panga, Kalank, Manikarnika, Luka Chuppi, Padman, Toilet- Ek Prem Katha, Mohenjo Daro, Bajirao Mastani, Motichoor Chaknachoor respectively. Upcoming projects like ‘Sherni’ starring Vidya Balan and ‘Durgawati’ starring Bhumi Pednekar have also sought Madhya Pradesh as their destination. State also offers incentives like Capital Investment Subsidy for creation of infrastructure along

with the installation of equipment to establish film studio and film making. The state also runs its own hotels/motels which are available to the units for a film shooting.

The literature connection

Rudyard Kipling drew inspiration from settings and surroundings of the Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. The character 'Mowgli' was created based on a true story about a boy raised by wolves. Many of the Jungle Book's locations including Seoni can still be visited today.

The subsidy is given according to the budget of the film, shooting duration, artists (mainly local) involved, and the extent to which the state is shown. The support extended by the local authorities for permissions and access to various heritage and protected structures has acted as the key factor for many filmmakers and actors to trust the state for shoots. With such subsidies and incentives, the government has been able to attract filmmakers which in turn has increased the state's tourist footfalls since there is a great following of actors and cinema in India. 53

It endeavours to assemble in a public space by making them remember only one thing - putting on the same lens of festive fervour together to find something playful, exciting and curious which is 'visible' and 'hidden' at the same time. Hidden because any interactive installation won’t respond unless one touches it, thereby, making them appear intriguing and suspenseful. While their overall weird and unusual appearance would be apparent or visible to everyone. Maheshwar is a small town whose weavers continue to create magic on hand looms reviving a tradition that dates back several thousand years Words & Photos: Bindu Gopal Rao

O

n a recent trip to Mandu, a casual conversation with a media colleague led me to discover its proximity to Maheshwar and I immediately decided to head to the city known for its famed Maheshwari saris.

Handloom Hues

My first stop was at Ahilya Fort that overlooks the Narmada Ghat and as I started walking down the stairs to

head towards the water, I heard the clickety clack of the hand looms from the women of the Rehwa Society that has been spear heading the handloom revival here. Handloom weaving in Maheshwar has a history that dates to over 1500 years. The tradition was given a new lease of life by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar who ruled Maheshwar between 1765 to 1795 and ensured that weavers prospered. It helped that the weavers had the patronage of wealthy local families who promoted

The royal Holkar family established Rehwa Society in 1979 as a notfor-profit organisation with a grant from the Central Welfare Board for the weavers the fine textiles. Post-independence, the royal patronage vanished and the weavers diminished in numbers as they could not find new markets. To revitalize the weaving traditions of Maheshwar, the heirs of the royal Holkar family established Rehwa Society in 1979 as a not-forprofit organization with a grant from the Central Welfare Board. Most of the weavers who work here today come from difficult socio-economic backgrounds and are largely single income earners. Apart from a housing colony for the weavers called ‘Ajilya Vihar’, the Rehwa society has 66

founded the ‘Ahilya School’ in 1989 for the community and most of the weavers' children study here. The Rehwa society has been working with weavers to ensure that they empower the women weavers by giving them employment and income to better their lives and sustain the hand weaving tradition of Maheshwar.

Weaver Speak

At the center there are several women busy at work and I speak to Kiran Kewal, a 35-year-old weaver who has been weaving for seven years, "I really like working on handlooms as this is what I have known from the beginning. In between there was a work offer from a power loom that I have declined as that will kill the craft of Maheshwar." She weaves about two saris per week and says the pallu is more complex and can take longer if it has complex designs. At Rehwa Society she is part of a 150-member strong weaver community that work together every day from

10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The weavers have a day off on Tuesday and are paid per piece - complex saris can help them earn upto `900 per piece while simpler saris will give them upto `600 per piece. Krishna Kewat, 33, who has been working here for about four years says she likes to work here and can make one duppatta for a week. She further says, "I have trained for six months to learn the art of weaving and it helps me supplement my family's income too." Apart from working as a weaver, Krishna also has a tea stall that she manages from 6:00 am to 9:00 am every day on the Narmada ghat and then reports to work after that. One of the oldest weavers here - Chandra Ben who is 70 years old has been weaving for 40 years and shows no sign of slowing down. "I do not like to be idle at home and love my work. In fact, I like to come and weave saris more than being at home. My family

in fact asks me to take rest at home but I have got used to working and cannot imagine life otherwise." Having worked on the weaves for decades now, she says that today there is a lot of demand for dupattas and stoles as well apart from saris. Madhu Chauhan, 34, who has been weaving for seven years says, "I manage my work at home and come to work as well. To do this I get up early in the morning and I am conscious as I must come to work as it helps me support the family income as well. We focus on handlooms only as power looms are useless. The workmanship in handlooms is like no other and we are able to correct any errors immediately, so the sari is always perfect.” The dedication of these women to preserve their craft is exemplary to say in the least and this must be a place to stop by on your next visit. 67

Coronavirus and Travel

follow

Always remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Boost your immune system with Vitamin C, D and Zinc, to decrease the risk of catching the Coronavirus A rapid influenza test can give you a result in 15 minutes and quickly determine what you might have

Apart from wearing a mask in crowded places, washing your hands and using hand sanitiser, what can we do to stay healthy – and remain calm – during the flu season, especially in the midst of a Coronavirus outbreak? •

With the ongoing pneumonia epidemic, caused by coronavirus, currently affecting Mainland China along with 27 other countries, it’s evident that it has become a cause of worry for all of us and especially the one’s travelling. The virus, was identified in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei region, after 41 people had developed pneumonia without a clear cause. The virus evidently transmits from human to human mainly through the fluid droplets passed on through sneezing and coughing. Symptoms include fever, coughing and breathing difficulties, and the virus can be fatal. Since it attacks on the body as any usual virus, it becomes evident that keeping our immune systems boosted will help us stay safe from it, along with many other precautions. I have listed some points below. Boost your immune system with Vitamin C, D and Zinc to decrease the risk of

catching flu. Avoid feeling overwhelmed by acknowledging feelings of anxiety, and you will feel more emotionally stable.

Some precautions that can be taken to avoid the spread of infections and viruses are: Defend yourself with powerful nutrients Since while travelling, the food we eat is not very nutritious, it becomes important that we carry our essential vitamin supplements with us and consume them on daily basis. Carry good, naturally sourced vitamin supplements with you while travelling. Vitamin C, D, and Zinc along with some good probiotics. Keep yourself well hydrated while onboard. And there is nothing that hydrates our bodies better than plain water at normal room temperature. Keep your water intake good in the flight.

The need for a healthy diet, maintaining personal hygiene and getting good rest to boost your immune system cannot be ignored. Begin with prevention. It’s not too late to get the flu vaccine, and this is especially important for the young, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. While it will not prevent Coronavirus, it will defend against the more common seasonal influenzas during season. If you do feel unwell, see your doctor as soon as possible. “A rapid influenza test can give you a result in 15 minutes and quickly determine what you might have. Anti-viral drugs for the flu should be taken within 48 hours, so it’s important to see your GP promptly.” If you have a fever, after visiting the doctor, wait for at least 24 hours after the fever has subsided to leave home. “Optimise everything that you can control – wash your hands, take care of your body, get enough sleep, eat nutritious food and less stress.
