Dr. Manimekalai Mohan, an esteemed educationist and thought leader, has dedicated her life to empowering young minds and fostering a culture of giving. As the founder of SSVM Group of Institutions, she has always emphasised that true success is not measured by wealth or power but by the impact we create in others’ lives. She shares her profound insights on why givers build lasting legacies while takers merely enjoy 昀氀eeting victories.
Many believe that success is about competition and self-preservation. How do you de昀椀ne true success in the light of giving?
Success, in its most profound form, is about signi昀椀cance rather than status. A person who solely focuses on accumulating wealth and power may momentarily shine, but it is the Givers who create legacies. The true measure of success lies in the number of lives you elevate. A Giver’s success is not just personal; it is communal. It’s about fostering an ecosystem where people grow together, where kindness fuels ambition, and where collaboration trumps competition. True success, therefore, is not about how much you take from the world but how much you contribute to it.
In the modern corporate and entrepreneurial landscape, Takers often seem to climb faster. What makes a Giver’s journey more sustainable?
In my opinion, Takers may sprint, but Givers endure the marathon. A Taker’s rise is often built on fragile
Founder,
foundations — exploitation, hoarding opportunities, and self-interest, leading to distrust and isolation. Givers invest in relationships, nurture talents, and foster collaboration. While rewards aren’t immediate, their networks strengthen, goodwill multiplies, and in昀氀uence deepens. Generous leaders create workplaces of trust, innovation, and resilience. Their businesses don’t just grow; they 昀氀ourish. As Adam Grant rightly explains in ‘Give and Take’, Givers succeed in the long run by adding value to others, ultimately shaping resilient and thriving communities.
How can parents and educators instill the philosophy of giving in children while ensuring they don’t get taken advantage of?
The key lies in balanced generosity — teaching children to give wisely.
Make them understand that giving isn’t self-sacri昀椀ce; it’s about meaningful contribution. Parents and educators must model empathy, encourage kindness, and celebrate sel昀氀ess acts while also reinforcing the importance of boundaries. Children should understand that saying ‘no’ to unfair demands is as valuable as saying ‘yes’ to genuine needs. A strong Giver knows their worth and chooses when, how, and whom to help. This balance ensures they grow into compassionate yet resilient leaders who uplift others without being exploited.
Can you share a real-life example where a Giver’s mindset transformed a challenge into an opportunity?
One of the best examples I can think of is Abraham Lincoln, a leader who turned division into unity through sheer generosity of spirit. Instead of seeking comfort in like-minded supporters, he appointed his strongest critics, valuing expertise over agreement. His goal wasn’t to win arguments but to build a nation on trust and collaboration. True leaders don’t seek credit; they uplift even those who once opposed them. His humility, resilience, and openness turned crisis into transformation. Lincoln’s legacy reminds us that Givers don’t just create change — they build lasting bridges that future generations continue to walk on.
If giving is such a powerful force, why do some people hesitate to embrace it? How can society shift its mindset towards generosity?
Many hesitate to give, fearing a loss of time, resources, or opportunities. Yet, giving is an investment, not a sacri昀椀ce. The paradox of generosity is that the more you give, the more you gain — not just in wealth, but in trust, ful昀椀llment, and in昀氀uence. Societal change starts with leadership. When institutions, businesses, and communities prioritise ethical success, people see that giving is a strength. Schools must teach collaboration, businesses must reward integrity, and governments must lead with service. A world built on giving is a world built to last. And the moment we replace fear with faith in the power of generosity, we unlock limitless potential.
revolutionising cultural exchange, a collection of works by Indian artists is being displayed at the Vatican Library for the 昀椀rst time ever! A collaboration between Maria Grazia Chiuri, creative director of Dior women's collections, and Karishma Swali, creative director and founder of Chanakya School of Craft, 'En Route' is on till December 20, 2025. Here's a toran(traditional doorway decoration) showcased at the exhibition.

Celebrating the month's special days with 昀椀ve remarkable women and their inspiring experiences.
Five women, all pioneers in their respective 昀椀elds, share a common thread: their journeys have transcended personal achievement to inspire societal change. Their stories interweave with March's special days, reminding us that celebration often means honouring both tradition and transformation.
WORLD WILDLIFE DAY
March 3
“If I could fall in love with Komodo dragons by just watching them on television, may be I too can photograph wildlife to inspire others!” This simple thought drove Aishwarya Sridhar to pursue nature photography and conservation. Inspired by Sir David Attenborough's "Life" series and a childhood spent exploring nature near Matheran, Maharashtra, Sridhar's journey led hertobecomethe昀椀rstIndianwoman to win at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards in London. A National Geographic Explorer at just 25 years of age, she has spent hours in India's forests capturing elusive creatures. An Emerging Fellow at the International League of Conservation Photographers, Sridhar also heads Bambee Studios, where she produces natural history and environmental documentaries.

The Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is the last remaining home of the Asiatic lion. It offers a fascinating tale of human-animal symbiotic relationship. "The lions here share a unique relationship with Maldharis, a tribal community that has been residing in the region for years," says Sridhar.
My Gir
"My guide had led me to the spot where the lioness and her cubs had been spotted the day before by a safari group. But my wait was a long one. After several hours, she emerged from the bushes with her two playful cubs following behind. A moment framed – the rare cats in their last wild home," says Sridhar.
WORLD POETRY DAY
March 21
Kashmir
"My husband, Naveen Pandita hails from Kashmir, and I've seen the destination through his eyes. While I prefer vacationing by the ocean more than in the mountains, Kashmir is an exception. It’s not just another pretty place; it’s an emotion, almost like poetry," remarks Munir.
If the lyrics of “Doobey” from the 昀椀lm Gehraiyaan have touched your heart, you can thank lyricist and poet Kausar Munir for the lines! This English Literature graduate from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, started her career as a scriptwriter with the popular television series, JassiJaissiKoiNahin! “Vijay Krishna Acharya, who was the director of Jassi..., gave me the chance to write the song ‘Falak Tak’ for the 昀椀lm Tashan, and that’s how my journey as a lyricistbegan,”saysMunir,whohastohernameover100昀椀lms,with hitslikeIshaqzaade,EkThaTiger,Dhoom3,DearZindagi,andmore. Words P. Mukherjee
Srinagar appeals to Munir's soul, and not just because of its natural beauty. “I love the city's architectural heritage. Dar-es-Salam, for example, has my heart,” she explains. The majestic home-turnedluxury boutique hotel stands by the picture-perfect Nigeen Lake and is a treasure trove of Kashmiri arts. “I also love Pahalgam, especially sitting by the banks of the Lidder River. I feel the river speaks to you if you listen. I adore Kashmiri cuisine, and katlam (a local bread) tops my list,” she says.
In spring, Kashmir blooms with vibrant colours and fragrances. While the Tulip Garden is popular, another such paradise is Badamwari garden at Shahre-Khaas, where the 昀椀rst almond blossoms signal spring’s arrival. Lined with fruit trees, 昀氀owers, and cascades, the garden is believed to date back to before the 14th century.
My Lakshadweep
"Over the years, I have explored the reefs of Lakshadweep, Thailand and Sri Lanka.Lakshadweep is relatively free of divers and its shallow lagoons are perfect for observing marine life up close. Once, while diving near Bangaram Island, I had a magical experience with six manta rays. They swam very close to me, their massive wings and bodies moving 昀氀uidly," recalls Patel.
In Lakshadweep, Patel suggests spending time at Kavaratti, Agatti, Kadmat, and Bangaram, which offer the best diving sites and have welltrained diving instructors. “In Kavaratti, a must-see is the Ujra Mosque, built in the 17th century by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim. Also, try the local tuna curry in coconut milk with paper-thin rice kilanji,” she adds.
WORLD WATER DAY
March 22
Magic is sure to happen when a marine biologist falls in love with scuba diving! That’s the ideal life of Avani Patel, who started diving as an academic pursuit but soon became addicted to the peaceful underwater world. Today, her passion fuels her business of guiding travellers to explore both above and below the water! “My Master’s programme required me to conduct underwater surveys, so I learnt diving. My 昀椀rst dive wasintheRedSea,inSharmEl-Sheikh, Egypt, where I researched for my thesisonreefhealth.Itwasloveat昀椀rst dive — drifting weightlessly over coral gardens was enchanting,” says Patel, whoholdsaMaster’sdegreeinMarine Conservation from the University of Hull, the UK. Dubey admits her love for theatre is so deep that she doesn’t mind blending work with pleasure. “Travel is my second love, and whenever I go somewhere — for work or leisure — I make it a point to watch local theatre. In every country I’ve visited, I’ve tried to catch a local play, concert, or dance performance. Ireland is my ultimate dream destination. I have also performed several times in London, which is a Mecca for theatre,” she says.
"My 2022 vacation in Ireland was magical. I fell in love with Dublin and its rich history. One of the highlights was the Book of Kells, a ninthcentury manuscript, at the Trinity College Library. The Long Room at Trinity College, one of the world's most beautiful libraries, with over 200,000 rare books, made for an unforgettable experience. I also explored local bookstores. While I love visiting historical monuments, I especially enjoy touring museums and art galleries," shares Dubey.

"I visited Inverness in February 2019, and was greeted by a crisp -4°C chill, and a breathtaking blanket of snow covering the city. I meandered into The Malt Room, a whisky bar, for a nightcap and recommendations. The owner had an impressive collection of whiskies and shared unique facts about each one of them. Over the next couple of days in Inverness, I visited the distilleries he recommended and returned to his bar every night to share stories," says Sharma.
For former marketing professional Swati Sharma, it all started with a Highland sip! Savouring a single malt in Inverness, known as the whisky haven of the Scottish Highlands, Sharma had a eureka moment. The idea of a passionate community of whisky and spirits lovers was born here.
“In Scotland, whisky sits on a pedestal. The way tastings are conducted, the depth of history and heritage in every dram, and the sheer artistry behind every bottle fascinated me. It was eye-opening to realise how much effort goes into crafting whisky,” she says. Soon, she launched Dram Club with co-founder Vinayak Singh as a passion project for her love of whiskies. Today, the platform connects like-minded people, building a community of those who love whisky.

From the vibrant strokes of Rajasthani Phad paintings to the intricate metal inlays of Karnataka’s Bidri work, India’s rich craft heritage is 昀椀nding new life in contemporary home decor.

Imagine a wall-mounted light 昀椀xture, whose sole purpose is to illuminate. Sleek and modern, it ful昀椀ls its purpose while staying functional. But infuse it with a century-old craft, and suddenly, it carries a legacy, transformed into a piece of history. In India, as interiors shift from minimalism to embracing a sense of individuality, traditional crafts are becoming more relevant than ever. From hand-carved wooden panels and intricate Pichwai paintings to 昀椀nely crafted metal inlays and handwoven textiles, artisans across the country are reimagining age-old techniques to add cultural value to contemporary interiors. Designers and collectors increasingly
see craft not as an ornamental afterthought but as an integral part of spatial storytelling.
Collaborating with artists, we have been able to lend to new-age homes the heritage of crafts. An apt example is the way our designers have created a totem pole-like tablewithtraditionalcaneweavingtechnique from Nagaland. It's so striking that it can be a conversation starter in a modern home, while drawing from an ancient craft. We have also created Phad totem pole tables, the latter hand-painted by Phad artist Kalyan Joshi from Bhilwara, Rajasthan. A series of vases reimagines India's doll-making traditions, sculpted using the traditional wax method from Chhattisgarh under master craftsman Sushil Sakhuja. Our unique Jantar Mantar Recline draws inspiration from historic thrones, featuring a 24-carat gold leaf backrest created in collaboration with Varakh artisans from Jaipur. Varakh, the ancient art of producing and using ultra-thin sheets of goldorsilvertodecoratesweets, biryanis, and even medicines in India, has been integrated into modern products to preserve it.
INCREASINGLY SEE CRAFT NOT AS AN ORNAMENTAL AFTERTHOUGHT BUT AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF SPATIAL STORYTELLING.
Gunjan Gupta is an independent artist-curator behind GG
Collectibles and the founder and creative director of Studio Wrap and IKKIS.
A set of vases created by Gupta's studio blends Bidri with the Japanese art of Kintsugi, known for its delicate cracked metallic lines, resembling 昀椀ssures in porcelain. In this collection, blackened alloy vases are intricately inlaid with silver, forming 昀氀uid, vein-like cracked patterns across the surface.
One of the most effective ways to integrate craft into any space is through architectural details such as intricately carved wooden doors, stone jaali screens, or hand-painted frescoes. For those who prefer subtlety, textiles play a transformative role — from handwoven dhurries and block-printed upholstery to embroidered cushions and naturally dyed curtains. Craft can also be introduced through furniture and accessories — a handcrafted ceramic vase, a silver inlay metal coffee table, or a cane-woven lounge chair can serve as striking focal points. Even lighting can make an artisanal statement, with sculptural brass 昀椀xtures, woven bamboo pendants, or hand-blown glass lamps, adding dimension and artistry to a space.
Another centuries-old craft 昀椀nding new ground in luxury interior décor worldwide is Bidri. This 500-year-old metal inlay craft is believed to have originated in the royal courts of Persia before travelling to India, where it 昀氀ourished under the patronage of the Bahmani sultans who ruled Bidar, Karnataka, in the 14th and 15th centuries. Known for its striking silver inlay work on blackened alloy, Bidri is now being reinterpreted for contemporary interiors.
Hyderabad-based Nolwa Studio collaborates with design studios across the world to reimagine traditional crafts and create their modern interpretations. Rohit Naag, founder and CEO of Nolwa Studio, shares: “When I decided to pursue design intervention in craft, I started close to home and studied craft clusters around the city. In this exploration, Bidri stood out for its sheer intricacy, skills, techniques, and processes. While artisans were designing small 昀椀gurines, I realised Bidri could lend itself to many modern interpretations.”
Beyond enhancing products like tables, chairs, and light 昀椀xtures, Bidri can also be integrated into modern homes through customised contemporary expressions, including wall panelling, tables, bar cabinets, lighting, and more.
Naag reinterprets Bidri — traditionally known for its 昀氀oral and geometric in昀氀uences — to create modern expressions that still feel rooted. He explains: “We have introduced Bidri to product designers across the world, providing exhaustive information and a mandate on the craft’s possibilities and limitations; for instance, how it cannot be used in exteriors or high-moisture settings. To keep a traditional craft relevant in contemporary times, it's important to ensure it has a sense of utility rather than limiting it to being a decorative piece. I want to make crafts aspirational by creating collectible objects that seamlessly 昀椀t into modern homes.”

A rising favourite among Indian travellers, Azerbaijan is 昀椀lled with hidden gems — a country of stunning landscapes, exotic stories, and warm people — a land best explored by road.
Azerbaijan is a paradise for road trip enthusiasts, offering an unforgettable journey through ever-changing landscapes. The country's wellmaintained roads make for a smooth drive, and the moment you leave Baku — the vibrant capital — the scenery transforms from bustling cityscapes to vast, breathtaking open spaces. Over the course of 11 days and 2,500 km, I traversed this land of contrasts, from the shores of the Caspian Sea to the towering peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. Even in March, I encountered patches of snow and ice, adding an adventurous touch to the journey. Overall, the experience was nothing short of spectacular — remarkable routes, warm hospitality, and a road trip to remember.

I am always in awe of the excellent culture at IndiGo, from the people I work with to the shared commitment to excellence, I am sure we will only fly higher, onwards and upwards from here.
My journey with IndiGo started in 2011 as a Customer Service Executive in Thailand, I can proudly say that I have witnessed and contributed to the airlineís incredible growth. Today, as the Country Operation Head, I oversee operations, regulatory compliance, ground teams, and the launch of new stations IndiGoís energetic and collaborative culture has been instrumental in shaping my leadership skills through challenges like managing the Bangkok station. What I cherish most is the spirit of teamwork that fuels innovation every day.
I recently experienced IndiGoStretch, a remarkable new offering that rede昀椀nes comfort without breaking the bank. Imagine a business class voyage, featuring carefully curated gourmet meals, and plush coupestyle, highly spacious seats designed by RECARO. All this comes at a fraction of the cost typically associated with business class.
As I settled into my seat, which boasted an impressive 96 cm (38 inch) legroom and a 6-way adjustable headrest, I felt an immediate sense of relaxation. The seat width of 54 cm (21.3 inch) enveloped me in comfort, complemented by a deep 12 cm (5 inch) recline — ideal for a restful journey. With a USB-C port conveniently available, I effortlessly kept my devices charged, ensuring I could work on the go.
IndiGoStretch doesn’t stop at superior seating. The priority check-in and boarding process, as well as the generous baggage allowance — including 30 kg for check-in and an additional 12 kg for hand baggage — signi昀椀cantly enhanced convenience. Dining on board was a treat with nutritious meals from the Oberoi Flight Services, served in delightful packaging. The attention to detail in IndiGoStretch truly personalises and caters to the needs of modern travellers like myself.
For those planning to travel along India’s business routes, IndiGoStretch offers an exceptional introductory price. I highly recommend opting for this thoughtfully crafted business product to elevate your next travel experience.
