STRAIGHT LINES, STRONG MINDS FIND CLARITY, PURPOSE AND PROGRESS IN EDUCATION

In education and life, the most straightforward concepts often hold profound wisdom. Manimekalai Mohan, an esteemed academician and founder, SSVM Group of Institutions in Coimbatore understands this well. For her, straight lines symbolize more than geometry—they represent clarity, purpose, and a direct path to achieving goals.

In this interview, she shares her insights on how straight lines embody powerful ideas that guide her personal philosophy and her approach to education at all their academic institutions.

Straight lines often represent clarity and focus. How do you see these qualities reflected in your role as an educator and leader?

Straight lines are indeed symbolic of clarity and focus. In my role, this translates to a clear vision of what we want to achieve with our students and institutions. Like a straight line, I believe in a focused and unwavering approach towards our goals, ensuring that every decision and action aligns with our core mission of nurturing well-rounded, future-ready individuals.

You speak often about the importance of purpose in education. How do straight lines represent a persistent approach in your philosophy?

A straight line doesn't waver—it stays true to its path. For me, this is a powerful metaphor for living with a purpose. In education, it is crucial to have a defined direction and stick to it despite challenges. We aim to cultivate this sense of purpose in our students, encouraging them to set clear objectives and pursue them

diligently. It's about knowing where you want to go and moving forward with intention and determination.

How do straight lines inspire efficiency in the operations and culture of the SSVM Group of Institutions?

Straight lines are synonymous with efficiency because they take the most direct route between two points. At SSVM, we strive to embody this principle by streamlining our processes and removing any unnecessary steps hindering progress. Whether in administrative functions or curriculum design, we focus on what truly matters, ensuring that our resources—time, energy, and talent— are utilized most effectively.

In what ways do you think straight lines symbolize progress and growth, particularly in education?

Linear lines are often associated with forward movement and progress. In education, progress is not just academic; it's about holistic growth. At SSVM, we encourage students to think of their educational journey as a straight line toward their potential—constantly moving forward, learning, adapting, and growing. This continuous progress is essential in confidently preparing them to face future challenges.

Beyond the literal, straight lines can have a more profound philosophical or ethical significance. How does this perspective shape your educational values?

I see straight lines as a symbol of integrity and commitment to one's values. Our schools emphasize the importance of ethical conduct, transparency, and staying true to one's principles. Just as a straight line represents an unalterable path, we encourage our students and staff to adhere to their moral compass, ensuring their actions reflect a commitment to honesty, fairness, and excellence.

5 MUST-DO IN THAILAND

Experience the vivid beauty of Thailand through its unique attractions, from stunning spiritual centres dedicated to Lord Ganesha to a Diwali-like grand festival

Must Seek

Thailand exudes a certain spiritual fervour through its many beautiful temples. It has three towering statues of Lord Ganesha in Chachoengsao province near Bangkok. The first is the “Reclining Ganesha” at the Wat Saman Rattanaram temple in Muang district, measuring 24 m in length and 16 m in height. Nearby is the “Lord Ganesha in the Blessing Seat” idol at the Wat Phrong Akat temple in Bang Nam Priao district. Seated at a height of 49 m, the Lord Ganesha statue adorns a serpent and a royal hat.

Just a few kilometres further is the “Accomplished Standing Ganesha” at the Khlong Khuean Ganesh International Park, in Khlong Khuean district. Sculpted in bronze, it is deemed the biggest statue of Lord Ganesha in the world with a height of nearly 39 m.

Must See

On the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar, which usually falls in November, Thailand becomes a luminous vision — much like Diwali — as locals gather around waterbodies to float the “krathong”, a banana leaf-float decorated with candles and flowers. Called Loy Krathong, this festival attracts visitors from around the world. This year, Loy Krathong falls on November 15 and the celebrations in Sukhothai province and Tak province are two key events to watch out for.

Must taste

Thailand offers diverse culinary varieties, including vegetarian dishes. This can be relished at its five Michelin restaurants that serve an array of global vegetarian delights. Sample Greek-Mediterranean, neoIndian and other delicacies at Aesop's, Haoma, Igniv, Mia and Thien Duong. Also, savour authentic local food at the street food stalls lined at Banthat Thong Road, Central of Bangkok.

Thailand has an interesting world-class golf event, Honda LPGA Thailand, held in February at Siam Country Club, Old Course Pattaya in Chonburi province every year.

Must Buy

Thailand is abuzz with vibrant shopping centres offering something unique for every visitor. Ratchaprasong is often dubbed Bangkok's shopping capital, with sprawling shopping malls, designer stores, and more. For luxury shoppers especially, Siam Paragon is a one-stop-destination for highend global brands or local Thai designer brands. IconSiam and CentralWorld are among the other big shopping malls.

MEANDER

R ediscovering India’s hidden musical instruments.

Words Dr Alokparna Das

Traditional and folk musical instruments in India, like the taus, nafiri, and shree khol struggle to find relevance today. Once integral to cultural celebrations, these instruments are often overlooked. Here’s an initiative to raise awareness and revitalise appreciation for these lesser-known vadyayantras, ensuring their legacy endures in modern society.

N afiri

A ceremonial pipe that has been integral to Delhi’s wedding processions and Jain festivals, the nafiri resembles a shehnai but is half its size, and has a shriller tone. Made of sheesham (Indian rosewood) or sangwan (teak wood), the tube serves as the main body of the instrument and also acts as a resonator. The metallic bell-like pyala at the farthest end of the instrument is usually made of bronze.

LEVITATING THROUGH INDIA

T he Grammy-winning pop star says she has fallen i n love with India's vibrant culture and spirituality. As she readies to return to one of her “favourite” countries, the “Houdini” singer tells us that she has her to-do list ready!

Travelling has always been close to my heart, and people often ask why I love it so much. For me, it’s a lot like singing — an adventure into the unknown, full of discovery. I’ve never shied away from a leap of faith. I mean, I was only 15 when I moved to a whole new country, chasing dreams that seemed impossible at the time. I had a few singing lessons under my belt, but knew nothing about the business side of music. Lucky for me, I’m a quick learner!

In my world, boundaries simply don’t exist — they’re all in your head. That’s probably why I’m able to juggle so many passions — music, culture, film, and so much more. And as I wrap up an incredibly busy 2024 with an India tour, my 2025 travel plans are already shaping up!

My first performance in India was back in 2019, and the love I received was overwhelming. The friendships I made pulled me back for both work and leisure. In fact, I ended 2023 with a magical holiday in Rajasthan. There’s something about India that has formed a special bond with me over the last few years.

Next up is Mumbai! My performance here (on November 30) is part of the Asia leg of the Radical Optimism Tour, kicking off in Singapore on November 5. From there, it’s a whirlwind — Jakarta, Manila, Tokyo, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and finally Seoul on December 5. Every time I’m in India, I make sure to soak in everything. The food, the fashion, the spirituality — it’s all so vibrant. Rajasthan will always have my heart with its colours and diversity, but I had an unforgettable time in Delhi too.

And, of course, shopping is high on my list. India’s a treasure trove, and I always discover something new. Last time, I bought lots of stuff from Rajasthan, which makes me want to explore other handicraft destinations of India.

People often talk about India in stereotypes, but honestly, most of that is just a surface impression. India is deeply spiritual, and I love how it invites you to connect with yourself. There’s a warmth here, a deep sense of faith that’s almost contagious. I’ve always felt incredibly welcome.

I’m also really excited about the possibility of collaborating with some of the amazing talent here. Diljit Dosanjh has brought Punjabi music to a global audience, especially our generation. And I’ve been vibing to so much Indian music — both commercial and folk. I’d love to connect with local artistes. As I return, I hope to make even deeper connections in one of my favourite countries in the world!

T he Maldives is not just a holiday destination –it's a life-changing experience. Let a pro scuba diver unravel its underwater secrets for you.

Let me start with a spoiler alert: The Maldives never ceases to amaze. If anything, it only becomes more enchanting with each visit. This is a destination where fatigue is a foreign concept. Picture this: manta rays and whale sharks gracefully glide overhead, while vibrant coral reefs teem with marine life, so extraordinary that it could have been plucked from a David Attenborough documentary.

With a staggering 1,192 coral islands dotting the Maldivian archipelago, the sheer

magnitude of this paradise is astounding. Imagine yourself on a scuba diving holiday on a tropical island, measuring a mere one kilometre in length and about 500 m in width. Stepping out from your accommodation, you find yourself on a pristine white sand beach, where a turquoise lagoon extends as far as the eyes can see. The sun is shining brilliantly, and the ocean beckons. As you contemplate which dive site to explore next, you can only marvel at how splendid life is in this serene haven.

I ndiGo to MALÉ www.goIndiGo.in

Flying Mantas

While there is a lot to discover and experience in the Maldives, swimming with manta rays is a life-altering phenomenon. These enormous, graceful and harmless creatures with wingspans of 12-15 ft float by like they own the place (spoiler: they do). They look like giant alien spaceships flying by and you are floating in space like an astronaut, witnessing scenes that seem like a fairytale. Every year at Baa Atoll in the Maldives, between July and October, hundreds of these enormous flying carpets with wide smiles create a unique symphony of nature! Join in to get a front-row seat!

Shark Tank

South Ari Atoll stands as the premier destination for encountering the colossal whale sharks. This region is legendary for its year-round population of the largest fish in the world. If swimming alongside a schoolbus-sized, polka-dotted gentle giant — one that can easily be mistaken for a character from an Avatar movie — isn't on your bucket list yet, it may be time to make some revisions.

Over the past 15 years, I have had the privilege of swimming with numerous whale sharks in these waters, yet the aweinspiring sensation of being in the presence of such a majestic and serene creature never diminishes. There is an almost spiritual and profoundly humbling experience associated with sharing the ocean with such spectacular creatures.

The best part about South Ari Atoll is its consistent whale shark sightings throughout the year, with the period from November to May being particularly optimal. Local guides possess an extraordinary knack for tracking these gentle giants, ensuring an unforgettable encounter.

Beyond its whale sharks, the atoll boasts some of the Maldives' most breathtaking coral gardens. Dive sites such as Kudarah Thila and Broken Rock present spectacular overhangs, caves, and channels, all brimming with vibrant marine life, adding yet another layer of wonder to this aquatic paradise.

Adventure galore

If adventure is your calling, you can try the extraordinary experience of skydiving over the Himalayas in Nepal. Bravehearts only

For divers seeking an adrenaline rush and a chance to encounter some of the ocean's most formidable and awe-inspiring creatures, Fuvahmulah is the ultimate destination. Situated in the deep south of the Maldives, this remote island has earned the moniker “Galápagos of the Maldives” for its extraordinary marine life.

The waters around Fuvahmulah are home to what may be one of the largest populations of tiger sharks globally. Add to this the rare opportunity to witness the elusive thresher sharks, and you have a recipe for a diver's dream. To heighten the excitement, the area also hosts mighty hammerhead sharks and oceanic manta rays that are even larger than

their counterparts in Baa Atoll. The chance to encounter these magnificent creatures will certainly get your heart racing.

Fuvahmulah is not for the faint of heart; it is for seasoned divers. However, the effort is richly rewarded. After a dive here, you will quickly understand why Fuvahmulah has become a coveted destination for adventurous divers. I recall dives where we were surrounded by more than a dozen tiger sharks, each measuring between 12 to 15 ft in length — calm, curious, and utterly unfazed by our presence. Perhaps our paths will cross there — whether sharing a moment with a manta ray, gliding alongside a whale shark, or chuckling over an encounter with a triggerfish that took an unexpected dislike to your fins!

I ndiGo to JAGDALPUR www.goIndiGo.in

N estled in the heart of India, Bastar boasts a unique fusion of natural splendour and rich cultural heritage. As the region celebrates Bastar Dussehra, here's a handy guide.

Imagine a waterfall as tall as a 10-storeyed building and as wide as several football fields. This is Chitrakote (Chitrakoot) Falls in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district. Hailed as India’s Niagara, it cascades with force throughout the year, reaching its most breathtaking grandeur during the monsoon season (until October).

Located approximately 40 km from Jagdalpur (district headquarter), this horseshoe-shaped waterfall is formed by the Indravati River as it plunges 90 ft. The deafening roar of the water can be heard from miles away, yet while standing at its edge, the sound becomes unexpectedly serene, almost meditative. For the adventurous, local fisherfolk offer boat rides that take you close to the falls, where you can feel the powerful spray of the water. If you're seeking a gentler experience, a visit to Tirathgarh (Teerathgarh) Falls, about 60 km away, offers a more peaceful opportunity to soak in nature's shower.

FESTIVALS

The 75-day Bastar Dussehra, often called the world's longest festival, dates back to the 13th century. Celebrating Goddess Danteshwari, it features a stunning two-tiered chariot procession through Jagdalpur's streets. Some tribal communities also worship their own gods and goddesses. The final 10 days are particularly spectacular, with this year’s celebration ending on October 19. In contrast, the Phagun Madai festival (February or March) is smaller but more intimate, inviting greater participation rather than just spectating.

While most tourists are drawn to Bastar for its waterfalls – including Chitrakote, Chitradhara, and Tamda Ghumar – the true essence of this mystical region lies in its tribal communities that have inhabited these lands for centuries. The best way to engage with them is by visiting the weekly haats (local markets), which are held on specific days in different villages. The markets near Jagdalpur are more frequented by tourists, but the remote rural haats offer more vibrant and authentic experiences.

Tribal Tales

These markets are bustling centres of trade and social interaction for the local tribes. While exploring these markets may require local help, they are unmissable. The sight of colourful stalls, the sounds of lively bargaining, and the steady stream of villagers at the markets make these haats an immersive window into local life.

Art and Craft

As you explore, you'll notice the deep-rooted connection between the local communities and their crafts. Bastar is renowned for its craftsmanship, with indigenous people excelling in a range of traditional arts. Terracotta, one of Bastar’s ancient crafts, often features depictions of animals, symbolising the region's natural wealth and cultural heritage. Despite modernity creeping in elsewhere, the people of Bastar have managed to retain their age-old techniques. A significant craft is bell metalwork, with a focus on animal figurines and scenes from daily life. One of the most celebrated forms of art in Bastar is Dhokra –the lost wax technique used to create intricate metal sculptures. Many artisans work from their backyards, which double as workshops, and visitors are often welcome to observe or even participate in the process that is a peaceful, almost meditative experience.

Basket weaving is another speciality. Their baskets are designed for various practical purposes, from smoking fish to storing rice. The craftsmanship of Bastar reflects a deep connection to the land, with natural resources playing a central role in the works.

Unique Flavours

Bastar’s culinary traditions are equally rich in stories and heritage. A stay at Shakeel Rizvi’s Bastar Tribal Homestay in Jagdalpur provides the perfect opportunity to sample the local fare. The homestay has no kitchen; the meals are prepared by local women and delivered to guests. Each meal is unique, and no dish is ever repeated. The food is lightly cooked, with every part of the vegetable used, reflecting the community’s resourcefulness. A memorable experience is tasting the region's tiny, flavourful aubergines. Millet is a staple in the local diet, along with smoked and dried fish.

For the more adventurous foodie, chhapra –the legendary red ant chutney — is a must-try. It is a local delicacy and will undoubtedly be one of the most unique culinary experiences of your life.

-inputs from Geetika Sachdev

Tribal Haat

For a glimpse of a weekly haat, visit Pamela market, held on Sundays in a forested area near Jagdalpur. While city influences like two-wheelers and cars are present, you'll still find elements of tribal life, including local vegetables, dried mahua flowers, and the famous red ant chutney.

Mind this Kanger Valley National Park

Just 20 km from Jagdalpur, this biodiversity hotspot features lush forests (mostly sal and teak) and the Kangar River. Explore caves like Kutumbasar, Kailash, and Dandak, known for their stunning geological formations. Spot crocodiles at Bhainsadhara or take a dip in a natural pool near Gudiyapadar. Listen for the unique call of the Bastar hill mynah bird!

• Visit Bastar from October to March.

• Avoid plastic and travel light to preserve its pristine environment.

• Approach with an open mind and heart, and spend four to five days immersing yourself in the local community.

Gods and Glory

D ussehra celebrations unfold in a vivid tapestry of rituals, performances, and age-old traditions. Across India, each region brings its unique charm to this festive season.

A Chhau dance performance from eastern India depicting Goddess Durga's triumph.
Autumn in India comes alive with vibrant celebrations. Communities gather for prayers, fasting, feasting, and merriment. In eastern and northern India, Durga Puja festivities honour Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasur, while Gujarat shines with Garba and Dandiya dances during Navaratri. Across northern India, Ram Lila performances enact Lord Ram’s victory over Ravan, culminating in the burning of Ravan's effigies on Dussehra night.

Mysuru’s (Mysore) royal Dasara honours Goddess Chamundeshwari, transforming the city into a glittering cultural hub, with grand rituals and vibrant festivities. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu Dussehra (right) features beautifully decorated deities and a week-long celebration filled with folk traditions. However, this Dussehra celebration begins on the day it ends elsewhere in the country.

(Above) While there are hundreds of Ram Lila performances organised across Delhi and NCR, the annual gala held by Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra is unique. Catch its latest presentation, to be held every evening from October 3 to 26, at Kendra Lawns, 1, Copernicus Marg in the capital.

While North India buzzes with presentations such as this, in Tamil Nadu’s Kulasekaranpatinam, Dasara Festival at Arulmigu Kulasai Mutharamman Temple is a unique spectacle that draws lakhs of devotees annually.
