FAMILY FOUNDATIONS TO FORGE FUTURE CHAMPIONS

In the recently concluded Paris Olympics, India made indelible strides on the global stage in various sporting arenas, showcasing our nation's unparalleled talent, grit and unyielding spirit. As the echoes of this historic event fade, for sports professionals across the world, the 2028 Olympics is already on the horizon; in India, the momentum is unstoppable - there is an unprecedented drive to nurture and propel young athletes to new heights, ensuring they are primed to compete and conquer on the world’s biggest stage like never before.

However, achieving this goal transcends individual talent; it requires a unified commitment and concerted efforts from families, educational institutions, and the community at large. "When values such as fair play, perseverance, and teamwork are instilled from a young age, children are far more likely to develop the discipline and resilience necessary for success in sports," says Dr. Manimekalai Mohan, distinguished academician and the founder of SSVM Group of Institutions, Coimbatore.

Excerpts from an interview:

Why is it important for families to promote sportsmanship among children? Promoting sportsmanship among children within families is essential because it lays the foundation for a child's overall character development. When parents emphasize values such as fairness, respect and integrity, children learn to navigate challenges, respect their peers, and strive for excellence in all aspects of life. It helps them handle both victory and defeat gracefully, builds teamwork and empathy, and encourages a focus on personal growth over winning.

Parents can inculcate these values in their children by actively participating in sports with them, encouraging them during the sports events, and reinforcing that effort and integrity are just as important as winning. This not only enhances their interest in sports but also contributes to a positive, supportive environment, indispensable for their overall well-being and future success.

In what ways does early exposure to sports contribute to a child's overall development?

Early exposure to sports plays a significant role in a child's physical, mental, and social development. Physically, it helps in building strength, coordination, and endurance.

Mentally, sports teach children discipline, focus, tenacity, strategic thinking and problem-solving, while socially, it fosters solidarity, communication, and leadership skills. Sports also provide a healthy outlet for stress, which is increasingly essential in today's fast-paced world. It encourages time management, and ignites a lifelong passion for physical activity, laying a strong foundation for a balanced, healthy, and successful life.

What steps can we take to harness our population's potential to produce worldclass athletes?

India's extensive population represents a tremendous reservoir of resourceful asset. To harness our population's potential to produce world-class athletes, we must start with early talent identification and provide comprehensive training programmes with access to top-tier coaching, facilities and support services. Investing in sports infrastructure and

promoting education and awareness about the value of athletics are key. Strong support systems, including financial aid and career counselling, are imperative to allow athletes to focus on their development.

Providing international exposure and engaging communities will further motivate young talent. The involvement of experienced coaches and sports scientists can further enhance the development of young athletes, allowing us to tap into our country's vast talent pool. Finally, government and corporate support can provide the necessary resources to build a robust pipeline of world-class athletes.

How can corporates be encouraged to invest more in grassroots sports initiatives in India? Corporates can be encouraged to invest more in grassroot sports initiatives in India by highlighting the long-term benefits of nurturing young talent, including building a strong national sports culture and future marketable athletes. Offering tax incentives and government partnerships can make such investments more attractive. Additionally, aligning these initiatives with corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals and providing opportunities for brand visibility through sponsorships and events can further motivate corporates to support grassroots sports, enhance community goodwill and contribute positively to the nation's health and morale.

Balancing sports and academics is often a challenge for students. What advice would you give to parents who want to support their children's sporting aspirations? For parents who wish to support their children's sporting aspirations, my advice would be to encourage them wholeheartedly and be mindful of their well-being. At the same time, balancing sports and academics requires effective time management and a disciplined approach. Prioritizing tasks and setting clear attainable academic and sports goals can help children stay focused and motivated. It's essential to maintain open communication, understanding their child's goals in both areas, and assuring a supportive environment that values both education and sports equally. Providing structure, such as a balanced schedule that includes study time, training, and rest, can help prevent burnout.

Additionally, parents should celebrate all achievements, big or small, and seek schools or programmes that offer flexibility and support for student-athletes, ensuring their children can excel in both academics and sports. Then, the dream ‘a Young India – a Fit India’ will be a viable reality.

On Foot

Via dell’Amore offers breathtaking views of the Ligurian coast. About 30 m above sea level, it connects the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola.

Nestled in the enchanting landscape of Italy’s UNESCO-inscribed Cinque Terre, where vibrant villages are perched precariously on rugged cliffs and Mediterranean waves dance along sun-soaked shores, a hidden gem is making a triumphant return. The Via dell'Amore, a trail renowned for its awe-inspiring views and timeless romantic allure, is reopening for visitors after a 12-year slumber. This longawaited revival is more than just a gift to dreamers and explorers — it's a tribute to the unwavering spirit of the local community, that has lovingly breathed new life into this century-old treasure.

Storied Path of Romance

The Via dell'Amore, often translated as "Path of Love," has been enchanting visitors since it opened in the 1920s. Originally constructed as a materials depot for work on a local railway line, it is part of a pathway that connects the five villages in the area. Over time, the path, with a stunning sea view, turned into a cosy and romantic route for couples, offering an intimate passage between the charming

settlements. Stretching to around a kilometre, the trail meanders along towering cliffs that overlook the glittering Ligurian Sea, with every turn revealing a new, breathtaking vista. Along the way, lovebirds and tourists alike have historically been drawn to the iconic tradition of affixing "love locks" to the railings, a symbol of enduring affection.

However, in 2012, nature’s forces took their toll. A landslide damaged the path, leading to its closure and subsequent repairs. More than a decade later, the Via dell'Amore is poised to reclaim its place as one of the most cherished experiences in Italy.

An Immersive Experience

Walking the Via dell’Amore is more than just a leisurely stroll; it is a deeply immersive experience that engages all your senses. The fragrant scent of local delicacies from cafes mingles with the salty sea breeze, while the warm hues of sunset paint the sky in shades of pink and orange. Along the way, you’ll encounter small, heart-shaped plaques and

poetic inscriptions left by previous travellers, adding to the trail’s romantic ambience. Preclosure, I had stumbled upon a pair of elderly locals, who were revisiting the trail to relive their youthful romance.

Beyond the Path

While Via dell’Amore is a jewel, Cinque Terre offers much more for the intrepid traveller. Each of its five villages — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore — has its own distinct character and charm. Monterosso al Mare boasts sandy beaches and historic landmarks, Vernazza features a picturesque harbour and a vibrant cultural scene, Corniglia provides stunning panoramic views from its cliffside perch, Manarola is renowned for its scenic beauty and pastel buildings, and Riomaggiore enchants with its narrow streets and lively atmosphere. For those driving to the region, the coastal roads offer spectacular views and access to hidden gems along the way.

But, the true essence of Cinque Terre is best experienced by leisurely exploring its paths, savouring its local cuisine, and immersing yourself in the rhythm of village life.

Buon Appetito

Known for their local grape and olive farming, Cinque Terre has a lot to offer when it comes to food. The Ligurians are very proud of their pesto sauce and for good reason. Walk into any café for a pizza or focaccia and you won’t be sorry. Make sure you have savoured the now-famous, locally produced miele di Corniglia, a sort of honey-based gelato. Cafes often serve limoncino — a sweet creamy chilled liqueur made from lemons — at the end of meals.

Whether it’s actor and presenter Lee Dong-wook's love for kimchi (salted and fermented vegetables) or BTS' Jin's obsession with naengmyeon (cold noodles), the passion these Korean celebrities have for their local cuisine has ignited a similar craving among their fans worldwide, including in India. As Korean drama, music and culture gain popularity in India, once unfamiliar dishes have evolved into favourites. While Korean ramen noodles opened the door to this exciting new wave of flavours, dishes like kimchi, bibimbap (a hearty rice bowl), and boba tea (served with tapioca pearls) are now staples in restaurants across the country. Here are a few Korean restaurants in India and their must-try dishes.

Tteokbokki at Garle, Dehradun

Driven by his desire for authentic Korean flavours, Soo Jo Kim founded Garle Korean Cafe & Restaurant in 2022 in Dehradun. The word "garle," meaning "shall we go" in Korean, captures his vision of creating a warm, inviting space for diners. With a focus on healthy Korean cuisine, Kim and his wife take pride in crafting fresh kimchi daily. Every dish on the menu is a treat, enhanced with Kim's special touch, reflecting his deep-rooted passion for food.

Try Tteokbokki, a delectable dish of rice cakes simmered in a sweet and spicy sauce, and kimbap, a savoury roll of seasoned rice wrapped in seaweed.

Boba tea at Got Tea, Delhi

In 2020, three childhood friends from Mussoorie's Woodstock School — Yu Sung, Armaan Bindra, and Joseph Touthang — turned a casual conversation about India's limited bubble tea options into the successful launch of Got Tea's first outlet in South Delhi. Today, Got Tea thrives on three key factors: a strong customer focus, premium tapioca bubbles imported from Taiwan, and in-house crafted flavours that offer customisable tea experiences. Their classic Taro and Mango and Passionfruit Boba teas are must-tries, blending tradition with innovation.

Korean fried chicken at Mukbang, Kochi

At this charming Korean eatery in Kochi, it’s hard to say what’s more captivating — the warm, infectious smile of its founder Hyeonju Park, affectionately known as “Mrs. Park,” or the delicious dishes she lovingly serves. A Kochi resident for around two decades, this former educator from South Korea delights in sharing her culture, greeting guests with a cheerful “annyeong!” Mukbang Korean Restaurant & Bakery, launched by Mrs. Park in 2023 to navigate post-pandemic challenges, has quickly become a favourite in this tourist haven. Her partner, Jongman Park, who ran a sushi restaurant in South Korea, effortlessly brings authentic Korean flavours to the table.

Yu Sung recommends Korean Banana Milk with a shot of espresso or the Matcha Boba Tea.
One of the most popular combinations here is yangnyeom (fried chicken) and sikhye (sweet rice beverage). And don’t miss the framed personal autograph from BTS members on the wall!

Dolsot bibimbap at Heng Bok, Mumbai

As you step into this cosy restaurant, chances are you will be warmly welcomed by manager Niraj Giri, who ensures you feel at home amidst the traditional Korean ambience. Once seated, indulge in the ever-popular dolsot bibimbap — a sizzling stone bowl of Korean fried rice cooked live at your table. While the dish stays true to its traditional roots, the real treasure lies in the crispy, caramelised layer of rice at the bottom. Heng Bok Korean Restaurant, founded in 2014 by Ladakhi brothers Morup Namgyal and Rinchen Angchuk, was inspired by their Korean customers and their passion for serving authentic Korean cuisine.

Jaffna, the vibrant gateway to Sri Lanka’s undiscovered northern province, is a treasure trove of eclectic experiences. From colourful temples to the charming sight of its bustling bylanes and markets, Jaffna offers a unique blend of tradition and tranquility. Famous for its deliciously sweet mangos, this off-the-beaten-path destination warmly invites you to explore its rich Hindu heritage, artistic expression, and creative spirit. Intriguing yet unimposing, Jaffna is a rewarding journey into a lesser-known side of Sri Lanka that leaves a lasting impression.

Jaffna Favs

While in Jaffna, explore the popular Casuarina Beach. In winter, be mesmerised by the large number of migratory birds that arrive in the water bodies in and around Jaffna. The nearby Chundikulam National Park is a hotspot for bird-watchers.

History and Heritage

Historians say Jaffna's early mention can be found during the time of Lord Buddha’s visit to Sri Lanka. Today, Jaffna boasts several Hindu and Buddhist sites across the peninsula and islands.

Jaffna loves its festivals and some of the popular ones include Navarathri, Karthigai Deepam and the grand Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil Festival.

Jaffna's Food

Jaffna's cuisine is a flavourful blend of spices, featuring signature dishes like crab curry, spicy mutton curry, and unique palmyra-based sweets, reflecting the region's rich heritage.

The imposing Jaffna Fort, once the city's gateway, has a storied history. Said to have been built by the Portuguese in the early 1600s, it was captured by the Dutch in 1658, who expanded it into a distinctive pentagonal shape. The British took control in 1795 without a fight. Today, its walls, gateways, and moats offer a fascinating glimpse into centuries of colonial history. About an hour away stands the solitary Point Pedro Lighthouse, with a cosy beach that is perfect for a picnic.

Of Temples and Beaches

Jaffna's Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil temple, a vibrant hub of Hindu worship, stands as the city's most significant religious site, renowned for its grand annual festival. Beyond the temple, visitors can explore the serene Jaffna Public Library, the intriguing Jaffna Archaeological Museum, and picturesque beaches.

CATCH A RAY IN FRANCE

F or actor Lisa Ray, a spontaneous traveller who cherishes discovery, the Loire Valley in France offers a perfect blend of nature, history, and culinary delights.

Words Geetika Sachdev

All eyes were on actor Lisa Ray when she walked the ramp for designer Rahul Mishra at the recently concluded India Couture Week 2024 in Delhi. The Four More Shots Please! actor evoked nostalgia with her entry, swaying to the tunes of the iconic song "Afreen Afreen" , sung by the legendary late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, featuring her.

While the runway may be her first love, Ray also enjoys traveling, particularly to destinations where nature takes centre stage. She says, “I was a spontaneous traveller until my daughters came along. So, I’ve learned to plan. But once we arrive at a destination, we open ourselves to discovery. I am definitely not one to overplan or hit traditional tourist spots.” No wonder the quaint Loire Valley in France features at the top of her list. “It's unbeatable in spring and summer. The wildflowers and the lush weeping willows lining the bike paths next to the languid river transport you to a timeless, leisurely era,” she explains.

The region's winemaking history is another talking point, dating back almost 2,000 years when Romans set up the first vineyards here. Today, Loire Valley is abundant in Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) wines, including some of the finest white wines and rosés. Ray agrees, “The crisp Sauvignon Blanc pairs perfectly with summer meals. I have been to Loire Valley twice, and both experiences have been unforgettable.” If there's something that can't be missed, it is the cave experience. From monuments to mushroom houses and quaint villages, these centuries-old troglodyte caves that populate the Loire Valley, especially the Saumur Val de Loire area, feature many attractions. “The region is home to an astonishing number of dwellings and caves carved into tufa limestone rock and were used as shelters in ancient times. Many have now been converted into dining spaces or wine cellars,” adds Ray.

briefing

Top things to do in Loire

“Soak in the charm of the destination while relishing a glass of wine. Bike along the Loire River, explore small medieval villages, and don't miss the cave experience. Book a night in a castle, and enjoy a boat tour in Saumur.”

Pro tip

Stay

On her recent visit to the Loire Valley, Ray checked into the Art Hotel in Rochecorbon, a stunning property on the banks of the Loire, near the city of Tours. Another favourite on her list is Chateau Belmont in Tours, set in a 2.5-hectare park. Guinguette de Rochecorbon is a hidden restaurant she swears by. “Book a splurge at a chateau hotel. And be aware that it's often challenging to get food between lunch and dinner in smaller towns,” she advises.

“Rent a car in Paris and drive up to the region, exploring the small hamlets and towns along the way. Langlois Chateau and Chateau de Miniere offer excellent tours, but just driving or renting bicycles and discovering hidden treasures along the way while asking locals for directions is ideal,” she says.

“Shawls, because I always feel cold in air-conditioned spaces; sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, and a sense of wonder.”

Non-essentials

“I have stopped shopping when I travel. I’m a recovering pack-rat, and I prefer experiences to material things. I do pick up trinkets for my girls, though.”
