f you thought the ‘cute’ label would box Alia Bhatt into those ‘glam-doll’ roles, with which she made her debut, her totally de-glammed performance in Highway proved you wrong quite quickly. And her habit of calling a spade, a spade, ensures she is almost always in news. Oh yes, she is opinionated! And she is not scared to speak her mind. At all. That may have made her Bollywood’s latest controversy child, but she is beyond caring. “People are free to express their opinions about me and I am free to express mine,” she says. Yes, she does try to be diplomatic once in a while. She has no favourite co-stars and no dream list of actors she wishes to work with. No favourites between Varun, Siddharth, Randeep or Arjun either. Instead, she has dream directors. She would love to work with Raju Hirani and Ayan Mukherjee. She enjoyed working on all her three films and with all the three directors, and does not like the idea of comparing her films as each is special to her. She loves her mom and dad equally. That’s diplomatic enough. But you push her a bit, just a wee bit, and the real Alia jumps up to the fore and takes centrestage, almost instantly. She considers people who bring her age into everything plain ridiculous. She is open about the fact that she is never going to be open about her personal life. She just cannot hide behind facades and would rather wear her opinions about anything and anyone on her sleeve. Rumoured stories about her link-ups do not bother her but people writing lies about

her, especially those lying with confidence, is something she finds hard to tolerate. And oh yes, she loves clothes, shoes, accessories and everything stylish and exclusive. People may call her a spoilt brat, but she says that she has no qualms in accepting that she is lucky and that she would rather concentrate on enjoying the luxuries that she has been served on a platter.

STYLE WISE A fashion icon for youngsters, Alia is fond of her brands and loves to shop. We chat up with her on what excites her the most—Style. What’s your favourite style of dressing for when you are not shooting? I like wearing heels and dresses and accessorising well. Wearing big rings and doing up my hair and adding colour to my lips is high on my list. One fashion trend you wish would make a comeback? Knee-length boots. Who are your favourite designers and design labels? Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney & Michael Kors. One fashion brand you can depend blindly on for red carpet events? Dior.

“Earlier I dressed to get noticed. Now I don’t dress to get noticed, I dress for myself. And people can hate it or love it.” What do you enjoy spending most of your money on? Shoes. What is beauty to you? Simplicity. One makeup essential you have to wear every day? Kajal. On days when I am not shooting or don’t have any appearances to make, I like to keep it simple and clean and wear only Kajal. Any childhood memories or impressions that have influenced your style? My maternal grandmother, who’s a German, is very elegant. I don’t think I will be able to go down that road anytime soon. But her fine taste has left lasting impressions on me. When we were young, she would buy a lot of pretty dresses and unique accessories, like charming bracelets, for me and my sister. It’s because of her we have developed a fondness for many things like whites, dainty trinkets and, of course, my quirk for buying pajamas. How would you dress up an LBD, the fresh Alia way? By complimenting the look with dark eyes and soft hair. What would you not mind breaking your bank for? Food. (Laughs). Actually, that’s a lie. I am more materialistic than that. I buy a lot of stuff for myself. But when it comes to pushing it, I would splurge on cars. I am lusting after the new Jaguar XF. It’s not out here in India yet but I want it. An actress whose style sense you really appreciate? Sonam Kapoor from the current lot of Bollywood actors. But I also really appreciate Sushmita Sen and Rekha for their sartorial choices. Rekha’s style presence is amazingly inspiring.

y calf muscles were shouting profanities at me by the time it was 4 pm—and I was not even halfway through my shopping list. That’s the thing about Ambience Mall, Gurgaon—the largest operational shopping mall in India—it doesn’t seem to end, and neither does your shopping. But just as I was striking a truce with my overworked ankles as I headed towards a comfortable-looking armchair ahead, my eyes fell on Sawasdee Spa—almost hidden in a corner of the mall on the second floor. The words “Thai massage” beckoned invitingly and I gave in to the temptation. I stepped in and was greeted by the refreshing smell of lemon grass and two life-size statues of the Buddha. “I need a massage,” I almost pleaded to the smiling woman seated behind the reception desk. “Make that a full-body massage,” I added, taking in the ambience. I could sure do with some TLC.

The smiling woman suggested an Aromatic Body Bliss Massage and, dumping my shopping bags behind the reception, I eagerly followed my masseuse-to-be through a wooden door. Inside, it was a haven of flickering candles and soothing smells. “Relax,” said Jenny, my masseuse, as I lay face down on the massage bed. Just lying down felt so good. But if I was feeling a wave of relaxation at this, I had a tsunami coming my way. The warm oil on my back felt like heaven and Jenny’s

I drifted in and out of sleep with happy thoughts on my mind, and the rest of the 90 minutes were lost in the soothing Thai tunes in the background and having every stress massaged out of my body by Jenny’s experienced hands. I was almost heartbroken when it ended. But Jenny had that covered—with a perfectly temperature-controlled steam bath and some throat-warming Thai herbal tea. As I sipped on the tea, I got talking to Sukhchit Dahuja, the owner of Sawasdee. Opened in 2010 in Ambience, the brand was the first to bring the Thai spa culture to a mall in Delhi/NCR. Now after four years of building up a faithful clientele, Sawasdee looks forward to opening a sister spa in New Delhi. Looking forward seemed an emotion I could relate to—as I walked out of Sawasdee with my shopping bags, I could definitely hear my muscles shouting out a “thank you” in unison.

MOUNT TAMBORINE, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA When you’re on Australia’s Gold Coast, it’s easy to get used to the casual sophistication and glamour that surrounds you. After a day or two soaking in the magnificence of the opulent Palazzo Versace, or even partaking in the bustling surfer culture on one of the many beaches, make your way to the quaint village centre of Mount Tamborine. This verdant mountain plateau and its heritage communities are home to a bunch of exclusive wineries, restaurants, boutiques and gourmet stores.

PRIVATE TOURS The best way to explore Tamborine village and its hinterlands is to hire a four-wheel drive (Southern Cross 4WD Tours offers bespoke private luxury tours) and meander through the tree-line lanes or even the hidden rainforests in the area. Here you will see a string of heritage homes, dating back to the British colonial era, some of which have private cafes and tea salons in their backyard—accessible only if you know an ‘insider’. There are various points in the Mount Tamborine area, which offer breathtaking ‘photo op’ vistas of the surrounding plains and the ocean in the distance.

RAINFOREST ACCOMMODATION AND CHAMPAGNE BRUNCHES Few people expect to find a thriving rainforest in the heart of Australia. This stonecovered village, which appears like an ageing relic from France’s glorious past is, in reality, a hip and trendy village in an unapologetically ancient avatar. AN ART HUB Ever since the ’60s and ’70s, when this citadel was frequented by European socialites and business tycoons, St. Paul de Vence has become a hub for modern artists. Iconic Franco-Russian artist Marc Chagall call St. Paul home, while Henri Matisse spent a lot of his time painting here. Today, there are strings of upscale art galleries and thriving artist communities in every cobbled nook and cranny of the village. FOR THE BON VIVANT Visitors enter on foot—this is a car-free village—through the imposing rampart gate at the front, greeted by the sight of Les Tilleuls, under the shade of an old lime tree, one of the most famous cafés and a regular haunt for locals. While most visitors to St. Paul de Vence are day trippers, a small section of discerning travellers choose to stay at a boutique hotel or a French luxury homestay within the rampart walls. Some of these luxury homestays at St. Paul are run by local artists and, hence, their homes and hotels are like curated art exhibitions in themselves. Besides that, the village houses trendy local designers, stores selling olives, foie gras and absinthe, as well as the Cave de St. Paul, a wine cellar that dates back to the 14th century. If this pastoral-chic existence appeals to you, the equally quaint medieval village of Vence, also in the form of a fortified hilltop habitation, is a short drive away. This is where Henri Matisse painted his world-famous modernist church murals.


SITGES, SPAIN Sitges, a once sleepy fishing village, located only about 35 kms south of Spain’s capital of eclecticism—Barcelona—has now become a boho-chic hotspot, burgeoning with luxury hotels, boutique hostels, nudist beaches, organic groceries, upscale cafés, trendy boutiques and an extremely picturesque waterfront. Sitges and its 17 beaches has also become a favourite weekend getaway for Barcelona’s swish set. The charm of this little village reveals itself to you as you walk through its labyrinthine, cobbled alleys or explore its seafront promenade, meticulously dotted with Mediterranean-style palm trees. Art enthusiasts will love the evident juxtaposition of old Spanish fishing-village constructions alongside Gaudistyle modernist-buildings, quirky facades et al. A MODERN AVATAR A string of millionaires’ mansions dot the waterfront, a church stands steadfastly atop a seafacing hillock, flanked by a stone clock tower and, along the horizon, a flotilla of anchored yachts bob aimlessly with the waves. At the azure waters’ edge, you will spot a crowd of sunbathers, nonchalantly sporting couture swimwear and designer tans, especially since the weather is sunny almost all year long. And when the sun goes down, the whitewashed stone walls and cobbled streets of Sitges are home to some of the trendiest nightclubs, wine lounges, champagne rooms and tapas bars in the region. Sitges also enjoys the reputation of being one of Europe’s most gay-friendly zones. DON’T MISS A little known fact is that Sitges’ most famous son is a certain Facundo Bacardi

Massò, who left Spanish shores for Cuba, where he invented and perfected what we now refer to as Bacardi rum. oll the ball and make them fall! Bowling can be a lot of fun and it’s the best way to spend time with your friends, family and even that special someone, when a casual evening is what you have on mind. We round up the top 10 pro-tips for you to bowl like a dream…

#1 Concentrate Concentration is most important if you want to make a strike. Distractions, problems at home, school or work, and uncomfortable clothing contribute to loss of concentration. One thing to do is wear a watch and count to 4. It’s not necessarily the extra time that helps, but this gives you a familiar object to concentrate on and helps improve your timing. seconds hand count 4, then move your eyes to your mark as you begin your approach. This will work, providing you don’t have to alter the position of your watch arm too much.

#2 Keep your shoulders square For consistent deliveries, keep your shoulders square to the foul line at all times. A dropped shoulder can send the ball wide. This often happens when you rush your approach. Maintain a moderate approach speed and be aware of your shoulders during delivery.

#3 Keep your back straight This is one of the most difficult things to learn to do automatically. It is instinctive to bend

#4 No arm bends please! Bending your arm at the elbow and swinging it away from your body are the main reasons for an inconsistent game. A slight bend at the elbow to obtain lift is all right, as long as the inside of your elbow is pointing down your lane and not at the snack bar.

#5 That knee better be bent! It might seem natural to begin your slide with a bent knee, then straighten it as you release the ball. Although, this will get you more lift, it’s just one more thing you have to get perfect for consistent bowling. Stay down at the foul line for higher scores.

#8 Watch your ball cross the mark It doesn’t matter whether you focus on a mark or on an area of the lane, as long as you focus on something. “Hold that pose” until your ball crosses over that mark, this will ensure that you are not rushing out of your approach.

#9 Practise, practise, practise And when you’ve finished doing this, practise some more. It’s hard to be consistently good at something if you do it only once a week. Get a friend to watch your approach, or, if possible, set up a video camera. You’ll be surprised at what you see!

#10 Have fun! Bottom line! You don’t have to average 200 but you can always have a great time! Oct-Dec 2014 59

Get yourself a Retro-Hatch If the new Mini Cooper launched in November isn’t your cup of tea and if you are in the market for a cool plus 20 lakh hatch with dollops of retro appeal, there is every reason to be happy. The legendary Fiat 500 will be coming to India in its proper avatar – 165 bhp compared to the 1.3 l multi-jet that was plonked into its bonnet. On the other hand, if you’ve always fancied yourself a Beetle – there’s some good news – after a gap of a couple of years VW is bringing in the Beetle back in a new less cutesy styling and some powerful TSI engines. Both the models will carry a sticker price upwards of `25 lakhs.

Sedans Have you been putting off buying yourself a sedan? Try the BMW 3-Series that will be released with minor cosmetic nips and tucks like more kid-friendly features, updated headlamps etc. The 3-Series though will be receiving major overhaul under the bonnet with newer, more powerful and efficient engines. It is in fact expected to share the engine with the X3. The facelift is not unprovoked though – there is going to be an all-new C-Class in the market and Mercedes promises it will be bigger, better and even more fun to drive than the current one. But even more importantly, it will be even better looking with a design reminiscent to the S-Class. The booster shot this segment needs though will be delivered in the form of the all-new baby Jag – the XE which

features an all new lightweight body made 75 per cent of aluminium, which means you can expect a new benchmark of handling and speed. The XE will also serve as the launchpad for a brand new range of 4 cylinder, 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines the company is calling Ingenium. The XE is expected to be priced around 28 lakhs.

Looking for a Luxury Suv? Besides the slew of compact luxury SUVs that are going to launch this year, Honda will finally be launching a Diesel version of the CRV along with an updated design, while Ford will finally be sending in reinforcements to replace its ageing Endeavour. The concept pictures look absolutely amazing and Ford has already proven their ability to translate concepts into production cars without letting the apple fall far from the tree. Both cars will be priced close to `25 lakhs. But an even more exciting battle is happening at the top of the SUV pyramid. JEEP will finally be launching in India with the exciting `40-lakh boss of all off-roaders – the Wrangler and the 70 lakh Grand Cherokee that will take on the ML, Q7, and the X5. Meanwhile there is also going to be an all-new Audi Q7. And unlike before when the Q7 lagged behind its sister cars the Cayenne and Toureg, the Q7 which is a favourite of Indian cinema will be leading the car this time and look to take the Mercedes GL by the horns. Still not convinced? Save your money, there is a new Land Rover Discover Sport coming in 2016.

In the market for a Sportscar? Just in case, the smashing, power breathing, big daddy of all performance cars the M4 didn’t deliver the kick in the gut you were aiming for there’s some other flashier options in the wings – there is a new Audi TT if you have 60-odd lakhs to throw around, up your budget a little and there will be more exciting, driver friendly versions of the Porsche Boxter GTS and the Cayman GTS that will be going up for sale in 2015. The Nissan GT-R will finally be coming to India to rival the F-Type and the 911. But that isn’t all – Mercedes will be launching the AMG GT a car which will breathe down the neck of the F-type. Get Yourself A Compact Suv On offer for the breed of urban adventure aspirers will be a slew of hot new cars. The most exciting launches are of course courtesy Maruti Suzuki. The brand has not one but two compact SUVs up its sleeves – the S-Cross that was shown off at the Auto Expo in 2014 and the XA Alpha a concept that generated whistles and claps at the Auto Expo in 2012. While the Maruti S-Cross is a city SUV with the underpinnings of the SX4 sedan, the XA Alpha is a brand new concept which has already generated its own crowd of groupies. Just to make matters even more interesting, the company showed off an above 4-metre version of the XA Alpha tagged the iV-4. As if that was not enough, Hyundai is working on a compact SUV based on the i20 called the ix25. The car will run on a 1.4 L and 1.6 l diesel engines and share design cues from the new Santa Fe. Honda which has already enjoyed a lot of success with its Brio platform

Let’s face it, there are weekends when you just want to take a quick run on a bike or just hit the hills in one. The choice in that too is all set to get a lot more exciting. The greatest part of it though is that a chunk of this action will happen in the 350 cc plus engine category. Hero Motorcorp is getting ready to launch the Hastur a 620 cc naked bike design many claim is inspired from the Kawasaki, Royal Enfield will finally be launching Fury in India (a bike the company manufactured from 195963 only for exports). In addition to this, KTM will launch the 1190 Adventure and the RC8R (with a top speed of 320 kmph, this bike gave sleepless nights to Ducati). Ducati itself is readying to launch the Panigale while Yamaha will send out its quarter litre bike R25 and Bajaj will launch 400 cc versions of the popular Pulsar. So no matter what sort of leisure biking you might be interested in, 2014 will have a mind boggling number of options for you. Just remember to wear a helmet. Porsche Boxter GTS Volkswagen Taigun

inding time to read with your child can be a real struggle in this busy age. This, however, would totally qualify as spending quality time together. Although every child is different, as research has proven, it has real quantifiable benefits for both your child’s reading ability and familial bonds.

Benefits of picture books for your child Firstly, for children new to reading, picture books open up a world of narratives and are vital in capturing a child’s interest in reading, which should last a lifetime. Picture books allow children to learn that written words carry meaning which they may not be aware of until they start to see words with images in books. As the actor’s latest release Bang Bang has created a bang at the box office, we get Hrithik Roshan to tell us about his passion for well-crafted watches. By Hansa Makhijani

ome October, and we will finally be able to feast our eyes on Hrithik Roshan in Siddharth Anand’s Bang Bang. With the sizzling Katrina Kaif for company, jaw-dropping action sequences, stunning locations and some catchy music, it promises to be a muchawaited entertainer. In the meantime, however, the Rado commercial with brand ambassador Hrithik Roshan, which also stars Lisa Ray, is entertaining enough. The gorgeous actor tells us about his association with the brand and acquaints us with his taste in timepieces. Tell us about your first brush with Rado. As a child, I first came across a Rado watch on my father’s wrist. That image has been anchored in my mind as the image of what a real man should look like. And here I am today, with a huge Rado collection of my own (smiles). What are the values of the brand that resonated with you the most? Rado has always been a trendsetter—in material, design and technology. ‘Imagine it and you can make it’ is something that the founder of Rado had said and this line resonates with me immensely. I believe that impossible is nothing! What do you like the most about the latest Diamaster collection?

That’s a tough one. The new collection is not only light and stylish but also diverse. You worked with Lisa Ray for the first time while filming the Rado commercial. What was it like? We had a lot of fun while shooting the commercial. It focuses on the style and durability of the Rado Diamaster Collection as I chase Lisa around, and required friendly chemistry between the two of us. It was so easy to create the warmth for the ad film and it was absolutely lovely working with her. Which Rado watch is your alltime favourite? Ambience Mall Activities VASANT KUNJ

Independence day celebrations For this year’s Independence day celebrations, Ambience Mall Vasant Kunj tied up with the Indian Postal department and Delhi Philatelists Society. The event was aptly called Spirit of India In Her Stamps saw some rare and extremely beautiful stamps on display. The event saw interesting activities being organised by the mall. For instance, there was a tri-coloured letter box for actually posting letters to one’s loved ones, a photo point called ‘Be A Stamp’, a kiosk of tri-colour knick knacks courtesy an NGO, and a counter called My Stamp wherein one could

get personalised postage stamps by the India Postal Department. There was also a flash mob by Nehru Bal Sangh.

Real vs reel Mary Kom Prior to the release of of Mary Kom, the movie, actress Priyanka Chopra and Mary Kom, five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, visited Ambience Mall to promote the movie. They were greeted with an enthusiastic crowd trying to catch a glimpse of their sporting and Bollywood idols.

Soccer mania

Ambience Mall recently tied up with Adidas during FIFA 2014 and put a life size brazuka ball (the official FIFA football) on display at the mall. The mall carried out a lot of activities to engage the customers during the FIFA month.

Flea Market Fun The Flea Market that takes place takes place every Saturday and Sunday at the Lower Ground level of the mall is now better than ever. With stalls ranging from beautiful ethnic wear, jewellery, garden equipment, trendy shoes and bags, home furnishing items and more, it’s a one stop shop for all your needs. 76 AMBIENCE MALL

Mother’s day celebrations A pop up store was created, an assortment of gifts from difference (selected) retailers was on display at mall’s atrium, along with the pop up store, shop n win activity was conducted, the enclosed pics show pop up store view and mother’s day shop n win activity setup, and customer receiving gifts from mall.


Ambience Mall Activities GURGAON Auto Expo at the Mall

In a one-of-a-kind event, Ambience Mall played host to an Auto Mall Expo. Twenty brands ranging from BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Mini Cooper, Volvo along with others displayed their cars in the mall.

Actress Karishma Kapoor was invited by Ambience Mall to take a pledge for health for Revital Women.

India Fiesta Latina Some of the best chefs in the country were invited at the Indian Fiesta Latina to promote world’s most loved cuisines at the Ambience Mall, Gurgaon. Known Indian celebrity chefs like Kunal Kapoor from Master Chef India represented the Indian cuisines. Free live cooking sessions were also conducted for the mall patrons.

Summer Lovin’

Summer vacations being the most exciting time for kids, Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, hosted interesting workshops and shows especially for them. More than five thousand kids participated in the workshops and also received gifts.

Femina magazine in association with Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, hosted a fashion show to highlight the latest collections of the brands placed inside the mall.

Remembering Mahatma Gandhi

This year on Gandhi Jayanti, Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, took a pledge to motivate all their patrons to keep their country clean. A special pledge wall was also created at the mall. The mall was also decorated with some of the most famous quotes by Mahatma Gandhi. Oct-Dec 2014 77
