‘I dream of a
white wedding’ She is witty and stylishly edgy, that we vouch for. She is painfully honest and emotionally strong, that she promises. And she has a body to die for, that anyone will agree with. Ileana D’Cruz talks of Bollywood, style, love, marriage and a romantic wedding By Juhi Dua Photographs by Arjun Mark Styling by Aakanksha Jain
F
or a girl from chilled-out Goa who started modeling at 18 and became a superstar in the South Indian film industry by the time she was just 22, Ileana is quite sorted in her head. She is bubbly. She is vivacious. And she likes to bring a smile on other’s faces as much as she likes to smile herself. Or should we make that giggle. At the sets, she walked around showering compliments on almost everyone. From liking my shoes to admiring the thigh high tattoo of Karishma— one of the fashion assistants—to sharing air kisses with Daniel, Ileana made sure she made everyone at the sets feel peppy and upbeat. She is also quite humourous, we found out. While canning one of the shots, there was a red spot that seemed to shine, near her left ear. Arjun, our photographer, thinking it must be the light flashing, adjusted his lights. But when the spot came again in the picture, he zoomed in to see what it really was. And we realised, it was Ileana’s ear, looking bloodshot red. And then when we looked at her ears, they did look a little red. We all had a laugh, and Ileana sportingly took the joke on her. “I am Rudolf’s sister. He has a red nose. I have red ears.” Her style choices are as spunky as she is. “My style is minimalistic and fuss free. I like clean lines and sophisticated designs but I like a bit of edgy thrown in,” she says. “I thought I have an eye for these things, and I always wanted to be a fashion designer. But I found my calling in a spot I never thought I would. The journey from Goa to
Telugu films to Bollywood, in fact, has been very surreal for me.” She tells us how it all started. “I happened to meet Marc Robinson when he was in Goa for his daughter’s christening and he told me that I should give modelling a shot. My parents pushed me to give it a shot too.” But she says that she failed miserably as a model. “I somehow got a few commercials and then bagged my first Telugu film, and I decided to take it up,” she reveals. Ileana’s debut film Devadasu released in 2006 and became a huge hit, grossing around `140 million, even winning Ileana the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debutant. She next appeared in the gangster film Pokiri which emerged as the highest-grossing Telugu film at the time. Overnight, she was ruling the Telugu film industry. While success wooed her quickly in the South, Ileana confesses that the actual love for acting came two years after she entered the film industry. MY BIG BOLLYWOOD DREAM Leaving an industry that gave her recognition, money, and fame must have made for a difficult decision. But Ileana says she just followed her heart. “I loved my work in the South, but I was probably getting stuck in a rut and wanted to try something different. With Barfi, I actually got that opening and I would have been a fool to say no to a film like that.” After her Bollywood debut with Barfi, the Goan stunner has not looked back. But she insists she is definitely not saying goodbye to South. “Bollywood is clearly a priority right now, but I am not cutting myself away from the South

Indian film industry because that’s the place that gifted me my love for acting.” CRAVING FOR MORE As much as Ileana enjoys meaningful cinema, she is a smart girl, and knows that formula films are as important too. “I understand that commercial success is important for any actor too but I would love to do a film like Barfi again, that stirred the creative juices in me.” Working with Mr Bachchan Senior is right on top of Ileana’s wish list. “To see him act would be a dream come true.” Ask her who has been the co-star she has enjoyed working with most until now and she says, “Varun and Saif.” “Varun is so relaxed that working with him puts you in a Zen mode and working with Saif was super fun too. Because we had so much fun working together, our scenes together have turned out great.” Australian photographer Andrew Kneebone, Ileana’s alleged boyfriend also makes his Bollywood debut with this film. But ask Ileana about his cameo and she just says with a giggle, “It has just popped up all of a sudden so I don’t want to talk too much about it.” A ROMANTIC WHITE WEDDING ON MY MIND Ileana and Andrew have been professing their love for each other on social networking sites rather actively and Ileana accepts that it’s all out in the open but she prefers to maintain a dignified smile on the matter. “I am in love but don’t want to talk too much about it.” But she does tell us about the white wedding that she dreams about… “I would love to get married on a beautiful serene beach. I would want a white wedding and prefer it to be an intimate affair. I imagine myself to be a romantic bride with a dash of quirky.”

Run(a)way
success Sharp dressing takes you places, believes ace filmmaker Karan Johar who turned designer for fashion brand Vero Moda By Asmita Aggarwal
T
he Marquee collection from Vero Moda has a little something for every woman. Priced between ` 2,000 and ` 9,000, the collection has eight unique themes; dreamy feminine weaves, the interplay of sheer and opaque, monochrome with a dash of red, print-on-print. And tonnes more. The designer, who put his heart and soul into the collection, hopes to make young women more fashionable in his own way.

NEW RAGE
What is the inspiration behind the collection? I was conscious of every woman having her own individual fashion statement, and have tried to include each and every kind of style to fit those trends. So, while the ‘Dreams & Ivory’ collection is for the more feminine woman, ‘Nocturnal Rendezvous’ is for someone with gothic preferences. There’s something for everyone. Is this the first time you have designed a collection for women? Although there have been times when I have picked out specific outfits for my movies, I have never really associated with a brand like this. I think designing for women has been absolutely fascinating as I could push my creativity to its limit. I am very excited about this association with Vero Moda and have given my heart and soul to this collection. Why have you associated with Vero Moda? Vero Moda has excellently positioned itself as a high quality clothing brand, offering the latest looks at just the right price. The healthy and successful run of the brand since its inception has provided a solid foundation for its continuing expansion and success. Vero Moda has become synonymous with contemporary fashion and designs, which young women across the world desire and I wanted to contribute to making young women more fashionable in my own little way. Define your personal style... I’m mostly formally dressed when I step out. For me, casual dressing is meant for working out at the gym. I am big on suave dressing as you never know when a normal day might turn into an occasion. Plus, I really believe that dressing sharp takes you places. Tell us something about the looks you have created for the Vera Moda Marquee collection. I have used eight basic themes in Vero Moda Marquee. Dreamy feminine weaves, the interplay of sheer and opaque, monochrome with a dash of red, sporty luxe, gold and silver sequins and print-on-print, are some of the key trends incorporated in this collection.

SOMETHING FOR EVERY WOMAN... DREAMS AND IVORY The highlights of this line are dreamy, feminine weaves and knits matched with vintage shapes. I have used gold thread, timeless pearls and beads to create a couture-like collection that is ageless and classic. KALEIDOSCOPIC FOLKLORE I created this line keeping in mind interesting silhouettes in a riot of colours, with traditional aesthetics. FUTURE POSH This is a must-have for the party season! Jackets, short skirts and dresses embellished with sequins make this a very exciting line for me. NOCTURNAL RENDEZVOUS The recent urbane rage of vampires made me create a line that is essentially monochrome with rivets and blood red highlights. I have also created an extension of this line - mostly black pieces with oxidised silver details. I have kept in mind the woman who has a penchant for the ‘dark’ and who is confident enough to flaunt this look! HIDE AND SEEK This is the most romantic line from the collection. With vintage cuts and flirtatious lace, the mix of sheer and opaque enhances the demure, feminine woman. My designs have been brought to life with the flawless tailoring of georgettes. And embroidery patches coupled with the treatment of solid matte panels over sheer fabrics is what sets this beautiful collection apart from the rest. SUPER POSH This collection is for those who like to be the centre of attention! I have created red carpet glamour with baroque inspirations in embroideries, all-over sequined dresses, and foil designs on chiffons. VERO GLITZ This stylish leisurewear in pop colours and embellishments is perfect for those who like to look stylish even in loungewear. I am personally a fan of ‘always being dressed up’ and this line is an expression of the same. WINTER GARDEN This all-lace collection in black and electric blue meant for delicate evening wear is dressy yet soft.

Your beauty guide to a
fairytale wedding The bride is the central protagonist in the Indian wedding extravaganza. So you must shine through like a star. From getting your makeup right for every function to the 10 beauty must-haves for your trousseau, here’s everything you need to enter your new phase in life on a flawless note. By Aparrna Gupta
T
he themes and the scale of weddings may differ, but each bride wants to look her radiant-best on the wedding. After all, the photographs get saved for posterity! Makeup expert Puja Taluja, who has dressed up faces of Madhuri Dixit and Kareena Kapoor, and many other Bollywood actresses, tells you how to dress your face like a star for various functions running up to the wedding and reception.
MEHENDI THE LOOK: GIRLIE CHIC The mehendi function is all about colour, music, dance and girly fun. So the makeup should be young and breezy. A bride could also play around

with colours and keep the hair in loose curls or braid it with natural flowers. Since the mehendi celebrations take place during the day, keep the base very clean, flawless with a natural glow to the face.Â
SANGEET THE LOOK: SIZZLING HOT The Sangeet is usually the most informal, fun event amongst the other wedding functions. It involves a lot of dance and music as the name suggests. Experiment with makeup and hair. Ditch the traditional look and go for a sizzling hot avatar. Backless blouses and sexy cocktail saris, call for complementing makeup. Go for smokey eyes, or bold winged retro look. Add false lashes to bring an element of drama in your look.
WEDDING
RECEPTION
THE LOOK: ROYAL ELEGANCE
THE LOOK: GLAM DIVA
The bride should stick to the traditional look on this day. Ideally she should opt for a natural looking base. To achieve a flawless look it’s a good idea to opt for airbrush makeup for your base. Highlight the eyes. Since most Indian women are blessed with big almond eyes, an extended eye liner looks great. Remember to seal the makeup well as usually the wedding functions carry on till the wee hours of the morning and the bride needs to look all fresh till the end.
The reception is all about looking glamorous. The makeup, hair and outfit all needs to be ultra glam. Makeup should follow suit. Dress your eyes in glitter with lots of mascara for a wide-eye diva look. A well-defined eye liner brings that sparkle to your face. Since for the reception, the choice of outfit is an Indo-western, loosely done chignons or an all pulled up hairdo looks chic.
DIY GLOW-GETTING TIPS BY SHAHNAZ HUSAIN In the olden days, ubtan was made at home for bridal skin care. This usually consisted of wheat bran, gram flour, yogurt or cream of milk and a pinch of turmeric. First, the body was massaged with sesame seed (til) oil. Then the ubtan was applied and washed off after half an hour, while bathing. It helped to clear the skin of dead cells, leaving it smooth and bright, with a translucent quality. Today, body scrubs serve the same purpose. ○ F or your daily facial care routine, cleanse your skin twice a day. For normal to dry skin, take half a cup of
cold milk and add five drops of any vegetable oil (til, olive or sunflower). Put this in a bottle and shake well. Cleanse the skin with it, using cotton wool. Keep leftover mixture in the fridge. ○ N ormal to oily skins need deep pore cleansing. Mix rice flour with curd or rosewater and apply it on the face two or three times a week. Rub gently on the skin with small circular movements. Wash off with water. It helps to discourage blackheads. Avoid using scrubs on pimples.

One of Europe’s most lively playgrounds, Madrid is as old and worldly wise as it is young and flamboyant. From a culture vulture to a high-powered corporate rat, a gourmand to just another freespirited vagabond, the Spanish capital indulges every fantasy and personality. Here’s a top 10 what-to-do-in-Madrid list that’ll help you celebrate life like a true-blue, sangria-soaked Madrilenian By Aparna Pednekar
46 AMBIENCE MALL
“T
o go to bed at night in Madrid marks you as a little queer,” wrote Ernest Hemingway in his 1932 book ‘Death in the Afternoon’ on Spanish bullfighting. That phrase goes a long way in understanding how this historic metropolis has continued to work over the decades. Like its perplexing official symbol, a tubby bear standing on its hind legs pawing a madroño (strawberry tree), the city can at once be sweet and fierce… and all flavours in between, offering a dizzying array of temptations. Here’s our top 10 things to do in the city, of which it was said ‘De Madrid al cielo’ which means there’s only one thing to see after Madrid and that is heaven. 1. EXPERIENCE ALMODÓVAR’S MADRID You needn’t be a raging Pedro Almodóvar groupie to appreciate the city through the internationally renowned filmmaker’s lens. Almodóvar moved to Madrid in 1967 as a youngster and worked odd jobs to fuel his dream of narrating celluloid stories. Madrid has since proven itself as his longest-standing muse (though Penelope Cruz may come a close second). Start your Almodóvar tour bright and early on a Sunday at the city’s most famous flea market, El Rastro, where the filmmaker was once part of the throng of hawkers selling everything from antiques to faux designer handbags. Just remember to bargain very hard. Next, walk down to Plaza Mayor, where he shot a famous solo dancing scene for his film Flor de mi Secreto. Should you not want to dance yourself, pick up a juicy bocata de calamares (calamari sandwich) from the bars dotting the side lanes of the plaza and down it with a glass of cider. More foodie stops include Museo del Jamón, the famous café chain which featured in the 1997 film Carne Trémula. Last and most grandiose is La Pecera, an iconic café densely populated by the city’s literati and creative souls. With its chandelier-lined ceiling and carved columns, it’s a gorgeous, if slightly pricey setting, for a quick tapas stop. 2. BE A DRAMA QUEEN For an evening steeped in culture, book tickets for a musical at the Teatro Lope de Vega, which has hosted blockbuster productions like ‘The Lion King’, ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Mamma Mia!’ and ‘Les Miserables’. The theatre is located on the ‘Broadway of Madrid’, the buzzing Gran Via. Other theatres on this street include Rialto, which played the Spanish jukebox musical Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar (Today I Can’t Get Up) for four seasons, and the 1932 Teatro Coliseum, which has seen the likes of rocked to ‘Cats’, ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Chicago’. 3. FOOTIE FEVER Whether you get a celebrity spotting of Ronaldo or not, the ‘Tour of the Bernabéu’ is a rite of passage, when in Madrid. The Stadio Bernabéu, a certified five-star sporting venue, is home to Real Madrid, the richest sports club in the world. After viewing the changing room, benches, pitch and director’s box, the tour ends at the museum, Spain’s fourth most visited museum, offering terrific moments for fans, like getting yourself photographed with the club’s nine Champions League trophies. 4. STOP TO SMELL THE ROSES While the city – quite literally – never sleeps,
you can sneak out of the party and sink into the lap of nature. And we don’t just mean tiny little green nooks in a concrete jungle. Madrid has some spectacular urban parks. The largest of them is Casa de Campo, five times bigger than New York’s Central Park. Or you can picnic in the centrally-located and very popular El Retiro, enjoying its genteel ponds, fountains and verdant jogging tracks. If you’ve snagged a date, the Parque del Oeste — a classic English garden recreated in the Forties after being damaged in the Spanish Civil War, has a spectrum of romantic spots. So, walk to Fuente de Juan de Villanueva, the city’s tallest fountain or bask in the exquisite Rosaleda (rose garden) — the scene for an international rose competition in May every year. 5. SHOP LIKE A SPANIARD Spaniards love shopping and treat it like a lavish, time-consuming and thoroughly enjoyable hobby. Whether you’re blowing up your bank
account on serious designer threads, whipping up a high-street storm (Spain is Europe’s high street fashion capital with brands like Zara, Mango and Pimkie) or scouring for quaint local finds, Madrid has the best options. Channel your inner celebrity with a stiletto-packed power trip at swanky Salamanca, which is home to labels such as Dior, Chanel, Hermes and Burberry. Of the many multi-dollar delights on Calle Serrano, known as the ‘Golden Mile’, you’ll find swish home grown luxe brands like Adolfo Domínguez and Manolo Blahnik. Cheuca, the bohemian district, filled with gay bars and a fun, permissive vibe, is great for shoe-shopping. It has factory outlets of many European brands. The Fuencarral indoor market offers authentic boho-chic at affordable prices. If you’re strapped for time, swoop into El Corte Ingles, the city’s biggest department store. 6. SCAN THE ROOFTOPS Just a 10 minute walk from one of Madrid’s busiest squares Puerta del Sol, Gate of the Sun, is Lavapiés, one of the city’s most beloved neighbourhoods. Once Madrid’s ancient Jewish district, it is now a lively, multicultural and modish hotspot. If you are a Bollywood fan, visit in June to catch their Indian cultural festival, BollyMadrid. Of its many popular restaurants and cafes, Badila that offers Spanish home cooking with a modern twist, and Los Chuchis, are highly recommended. But for the most scenic view, head up to Gau & Café. Perched atop an 18th century school building, now a library, and the site for several executions during the Civil War, this terrace café offers a sweeping view of the city
rooftops and ruins. Order the classic Duelos y Quebrantos — scrambled eggs, with cured ham, bacon and baked potato, and let the evening simmer deliciously. 7. SNAP YOUR HEELS AND TURN UP THE HEAT You can’t possibly come to Madrid and not have at least one memorable Flamenco experience! From the several nightlife options in the city that you can choose to make a fool of yourself at, the least embarrassing could be Candela, at Lavapiés. Walk into this unpretentious venue, hours after midnight, to find a foot-tapping, laissez-faire atmosphere that puts amateurs at ease. Sneak down to their basement to uncover the real party! Cardamomo’s 3 hour long show every night, showcasing classic tablao flamenco with contemporary spins is world famous. Centrally located, near Sol Square, it’s where you can gorge on paella and knock down a few mojitos, before losing yourself to the vivacious beats
of flamenco. If you’re looking for something beyond just a great night out, enroll at Centro de Ocio El Horno. The dance and leisure studio conducts hour-long beginner’s classes for as less as 15 Euros.
Flemish, Italian, and French art. To get a grip on the artistic achievements of the Spanish empire, book a three-hour tour (www.contexttravel. com) to learn the fascinating history and secrets of this massive collection of art.
8. HIT A SWEET NOTE After a raucous night out, invoke the Madrileño within and drag your weary feet to San Gines to chomp on churros dipped in hot chocolate. The century-old chocolatier, squeezed in an alley between Puerta del Sol and Plaza de Ópera, is where you’ll find like-minded night owls settling in for an early morning siesta. They also serve porras (chubbier cousins of churros) and their soul-satisfying chocolate spiked with alcohol of your choice on request.
10. STRAY OUT While it’s impossible to exhaust all the excitement that Madrid offers, a breather is always welcome. Take a ride on buses starting from the Conde de Casal and stopping in Madrid, winding 45 km from the city, through the picturesque countryside and dusty hills to Chinchón. This 15th-century town is perfect to just watch Spanish country life go by. Hang out at the Plaza Mayor and watch the locals go about their daily grind, while snacking on empanadas and downing a small glass of anis, an anisette flavoured liquer synonymous with the town. The artisanal bakeries and restaurants will surprise you with their culinary skill. Chinchón is also known for its wine festival in March and a garlic festival in October.
9. DECODE THE PRADO The Prado Museum is one of the world’s greatest art museums, famous not only for works by such major Spanish artists as Velazquez and Goya, but also for a wide berth of

hen it comes to performance cars, you can’t go wrong with the BMW’s M range. The M3 coupe in particular is a hot favourite. With the new generation though, the performance coupe is called M4, while the M3 is now a four door saloon. Both are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six engine that produces 425bhp. That’s plenty of power and we felt it when the M4 rocketed down the kilometre long back straight of the Buddh International Circuit. At the end is a tight right hander which demands a firm shove on the brake pedal. Speed scrubbed off, we
turn in as fast as we dare and the car reacts instantaneously, without wasting any time and we’re already heading to the next set of left-left-right turns. You really have to keep up with the pace of the car. It’s exhausting. So we pit in after a few laps to take in the gorgeous lines. The muscular bonnet, the chiseled bumper, quad exhaust pipes all scream performance. Too bad the engine note is a little underwhelming. At `1.21 crores for M4 and `1.19 crore for M3, these are expensive. But capable nonetheless. Now where’s the bank loan phone call when you need one?

The confetti from the celebrations has settled, all wishes have been sent, all high fives have been given and it’s time to pick those joysticks back up. While the gaming community always ensures there is something happening on every platform, 2015 is especially going to be epic for PS4 players. Here is a look at the top five PS4 games that are worth checking out By Sharath Nair
2014
ended on a great note and from the looks of things, 2015 is going to keep this wave rising. The gaming community makes sure that there is something for everyone. Case in point: Grand Theft Auto V is coming to Windows on 27 January. Happy Gaming! Gamers belong to an elite class of tech worshippers, every time there is a new advancement, a new development; we start feeling blessed, as if the tech community put in those months of rigorous hard work just for us. Most of us are still taking our time with Assassin’s Creed Rogue or Far Cry 4 or even Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and we are already hearing news of upcoming releases; this is simply being spoiled by affection. 2015 is especially going to be beyond memorable for PS4 players as the publishers are increasingly aiming at its multiplayer capabilities, creating interesting results. There is obviously a huge list of titles coming the PS4 way, but for a while let’s overlook the obvious like Batman: Arkham Knight or even the Dead Kings patch for Assassin’s Creed Unity. We turn the spotlight on the surprises we are set to celebrate...

‘DmC: Definitive Edition
DmC and all DLC running at 60fps and 1080p, there, that should be headline enough but thankfully it’s not. Everyone cried and complained at the reboot and finally the fruits have ripened. The Definitive Edition will also have new Turbo, Hardcore and Must Style game modes in addition to a Gods Must Die difficulty level. New costumes, trophies/achievements and leader boards will also be included.
2.
Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell
The standalone is coming two years after Saints Row IV, it will be bundled alongside Saints Row IV: Re-Elected but you don’t need Saints Row IV to play this expansion. Pretty neat, isn’t it? The earliest surprise you will get is Johnny’s power of flight. Unlike the gliding mechanics of Saint’s Row 4, a pair of angelic wings can be summoned which can then be flapped up to five times before having to touch ground and recharge. But you will stall mid-flight if you lose momentum. Saint’s Row Hell is a uniquely weird place and it has its own set of rules. There are five demonic islands and you have to complete activities in order to raise Satan’s Wrath and eventually progress. The legacy is kept alive with plenty of side missions and unlockable content.
3.
Resident Evil: Revelation 2
The 10th instalment of the wildly popular franchise has been designed as a series of terrifying episodes which are interconnected. Each episode provides hours of gameplay and the dramatic cliff-hangers. The new and scarier ‘Afflicted’ are able to move quickly and can use some basic weapons, so get ready to fight harder. Players can and will need to switch between Clare Redfield and Moira Burton, the two characters to overcome challenges. Assistive co-op play has been smoothened and will be a treat.

Project CARS
Project CARS (Community Assisted Racing Simulator) is aimed at hitting the perfect harmonic note of being a racing game and a racing simulator. But everything here is aimed at pleasing you as well. There are many gameplay modes to choose from and the best part is, it is a crown funded project, so regular and necessary updates will be a treat. Future Proofing has been kept in mind all the while and this is evident by its ability to be played on three 4k screens side by side. It may not be true for 12k but it is still awesome. Even more awesome is the fact that it already supports both the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, for now we can only imagine those crisp, detailed graphics in Virtual Reality but upon release, this game will be a must-have.

MLB 15: The Show
Yasiel Puig from the Los Angeles Dodgers features the cover of the upcoming instalment of Sony’s immensely popular Baseball series. New additions include partnerships from various equipment brands; this means authentically accurate gloves, bats, cleats and more. The graphical improvements are pretty major and individual player personalities have been enhanced to make this edition the most authentic baseball experience yet. That’s a whole lot of surprises to welcome the year with. So if you and your partner love gaming, pick one of these up and enjoy the fantasyland together.
Xbox ONE Excitement The PS4 side of things look shiny, but what about our Xbox One comrades? If you thought that you have been overlooked, even if for a fleeting second, you are wrong! Boot up please. By the time you will be reading this, a new DLC Package would already have been out for Forza Horizon 2. And thus the smash hit and the critically-acclaimed title will get new cars like the 2015 Nissan IDx NISMO, the 1980 Subaru BRAT GL, the2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Shelby, the 1975 Ford Bronco and the 1953 Ferrari 500 Mondial. bi-annual. You saw Forza Motorsport 5 in 2013 and Forza Horizon 2 in 2014, does that mean…? Nope, I don’t want to say it, I will just hold my breath! And talking about holding breaths, Xbox One will exclusively give you Halo 5: Guardians this year! And this time, the new Halo will sweep us all, with a compelling new plot, with 60 fps @1080p gameplay and a multiplayer engine that seems to have been redone, well, the move to Xbox One called for an entire new game engine as it is. And again, not saying anything, just holding breath!

Mini-Monsters
on the road
Whether it is pure luxe pampering or all about performance, Mini SUVs or Baby SUVs as they are often referred to, can get you excited with the sense of power they exude. Now, if you enjoyed driving the daddies–the regular run-of-the-mill SUVs, we bring to you the pros and cons of these new generation kids on the block. Take your pick and speed off!
Audi Q3 Dynamic The baby SUV of the Audi range has been a success. How does this new top flight variant fit in the lineup?
Courtesy: FHM
I
t’s tough to live up to the legacy of your forefathers with the weight of expectations bearing down on you. There are, however, many a success story of people who have come out of the shadows of their fathers and become successful in their own right. Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Shruti Haasan are some of the names that come to mind. And talking about taking the legacy ahead, with the success of the Audi Q7, Audi launched the Audi Q3 in India back in 2012. That’s when the luxury car market was enlightened with the term ‘Baby SUV’ and after that there was no looking back. The Q3 went on to become one of the highest selling luxury SUVs in the country. Today after two years of its launch the car faces some serious competition from the Land Rover Evoque, BMW X1 & the recently launched Mercedes Benz GLA. Call it crafty timing or an adept move, but Audi India has now launched the top of the line Q3 Dynamic. It is intended not only to act as an antidote to Mercedes Benz GLA, but also give a fresh lease of life to the car. The changes to the exterior of the Audi Q3 Dynamic are not going to dazzle you. They have been subtly incorporated and you’ll have to have a keen eye to spot the new full chrome front grille, faux sump guards design on the front and rear bumpers, rear LED lamps in clear lens & neat looking five-spoke ‘Trias’ design alloy wheels. The wheels wear 235/55 R17 Pirelli Scorpion high profile tyres that don’t really do justice to the looks. However, they grow on you with their practicality
66 AMBIENCE MALL
once you spend some quality time with the SUV. But that’s not where the story ends, The Q3 dynamic has a surprise waiting for you the moment you enter the cabin and start the engine. The MMI screen pops out and flings at you three drive select options: Comfort, Auto and Dynamic. As the names suggest, the drive in ‘Comfort’ mode is like driving in your daily SUV nestled in German luxury, on the roads of Lonavala with your family. The experience being as smooth as it can get. The fuel economy goes up and the throttle response is bare minimum. Auto Mode is like Professor X of the X-Men series, read that as I-know-everything mode and makes for a wonderful compromise in terms of ride and handling. Then there’s the Dynamic Mode. If you have ever encountered a school kid who has just got his pocket money, this is what it’s like. Just imagine his behaviour for a minute. Nothing in the world can stop him from reaching the school canteen as soon as he possibly can. That’s what the Dynamic Mode is like. It makes the car go bonkers with the full capacity of the 35 TDI engine and a horse power support of 174 bhp. As claimed by the company, it will reach the three figure mark in 8.2 seconds. That’s plenty fast for most needs. The DSG gearbox has a remarkable history to its name but what makes the Audi Q3 Dynamic stand out against its competitors is Qauttro four wheel drive as Audi calls it. Let’s not forget the occasional crave for off-road adventure drive where this can come handy too. Of all the things said and done the most disappointing part of the whole experience was when it left our garage.

ini SUVs are perfect for the urban male. More spacious than a hatch to lug all the friends around, more powerful than a sedan and with high ground clearance to ride over broken roads. What more can one ask for? Well, comfort for starts. Good looks. Bit of luxury pampering and features. So it’s not surprising that the entry luxury SUV space is a hotly contested one. Audi has its Q3, the BMW has the X1 and Volvo the V40 CrossCountry. Now Mercedes has brought it’s GLAclass you see in the pictures. Mercedes has been making some truly stunning cars of late 68 AMBIENCE MALL
and the GLA is by far the best. Just look at it. The aggressive face, muscular haunches, wheel-wellfilling tyres, tight flowing lines all over, there just isn’t a bad angle to the GLA. We do wish it was a bit taller, like the Q3, which looks like a proper SUV. The GLA ends up looking sorta like an estate car. On the upside, this low stance means that you don’t climb up, rather slide inside like a sedan. Which brings us to the cabin. If you’re used to cheap, dull plastics of your daily drive like us, you’ll be surprised. Every surface in the cabin reeks of quality. The dashboard is similar to the A-class,
though the two tone black and beige of our test car was a bit a too much for us. There’s an all black trim on offer thankfully. There’s leather upholstery and we must mention the comfy front seats. They adjust electrically for height and lumbar support and are very spacious. If only they turned round, we would have stolen them to replace the crappy office chairs we have to put up with. Obviously a great driving position is easy to find, and driving is where the GLA impresses. The petrol GLA 200 we drove comes with a 2.0-litre petrol motor producing 181bhp. It doesn’t sound
WITH LOVE FROM THE A The interiors are pretty much faultless, though an all-black might look better
BOY RACER When 7-speed auto can’t change the gears fast enough, the paddle shifters are a lot of fun

much in a car that weighs a tonne and a half, but the 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearbox helps masks the bulk quite well. Plant your foot down and you’ll surprise most traffic light racer wannabes, especially if you engage the Sports mode. Press a button and the engine suddenly sounds eager and gears only shifting around the red line. It’s a lot of fun and you can hit speeds that are illegal in most parts of our country. Automatics though can’t match stick shifts for driving pleasure, but there are paddles behind the steering for enhanced driver involvement if you are so inclined.
Power 181 bhp
Going fast however doesn’t count for nuts if the car can’t handle. Thankfully the GLA isn’t anything like an SUV in this regard. Which is not a bad thing since there is no four wheel drive and that it’s not likely to see any off roading. In fact it handles like a typical front wheel drive car and maintains its line around a corner. The suspension is sportily set up which helps matters, making the GLA a decidedly sporty drive. But when time comes to negotiate the craters masquerading as potholes on our roads, there will be a fair bit of cringing. Especially from the rear seat passengers. Of which there
Gearbox 7-speed auto
should only be two. Three average size adults will find things getting a bit intimate. Which would be a good thing if we were on an cover shoot with three girls. Not so much on the way to a weekend cricket game with the lads and kit in tow. The kit will spill into the cabin, because the spare wheel takes up a big chunk of the boot. This GLA 200 costs `36 lakh exshowroom in Delhi and a diesel is available at `32.75 lakh. What you get is a good looking five seater with lots of equipment and sporty handling. We on the other hand are on our way to rob a bank so we can pay for the GLA 45 AMG, which is due soon.
ECONOMICALLY WISE And sporty. While the buttons are not exactly flashy, the engine is all that and more
SUNBURN There is also a panoramic sun-roof, which alone has sold half of the Audis in the market

Enough has been said about him. But each time he decides to speak up, he introduces us to a new superstar. That’s Ranbir Kapoor for you By Dessidre Fleming
B
ollywood heartthrob, brand ambassador, football club owner, and son to legendary superstars— Ranbir Kapoor is adept at playing many roles not only on screen, but in real life, too. And he must be one of the most envied men, for the adulation he gets for every role he plays is tremendous. His latest partnership with one of the world’s leading watch brands, Tag Heuer, gives the charismatic star more power. But, amid all the rumours and the paparazzi that surround the Kapoor scion’s public image, Ranbir Kapoor, the person, believes in keeping things and people he loves, close to his heart. From his philosophy on life to his recent super-power partnership and his style staples, he bares it all. You are known for living by your own set of rules. But are you really the rule-breaker you are made out to be? What do you believe in— following rules or defying them? I think you are supposed to follow rules and defy them, at the same time. I don’t think one should be a rebel in every way. So you should follow certain rules. But then again, who’s to say what’s right and what’s wrong? In the end, you should just follow your heart and your mind. And if there is a marriage between the two, then there is nothing that should really matter. And what’s your take on the much-soughtafter balance between your personal and professional life? How do you achieve that? Today, I think everyone manages the whole personal-professional life balance. You have to do it. I do it, too. I mean, you go to work, you come back home and you switch off and spend time with your family-your parents, your wife, or your girlfriend, and your siblings.
Family and close friends are really important, and I understand that. At the end, that’s what keeps you grounded and going for more, especially if you’re in an industry like mine. Being in the film industry transports you completely to a place that is not real. And so, it becomes incredibly crucial to get back to your bearings by being with people you love and care about. Coming from a very prominent family, luxury is probably what you grew up with. But what does it mean to you today? For me, luxury means happiness. Anything that gives me happiness; a sense of freedom and peace is what makes me happy. I think luxury is really synonymous with that. How would you describe your personal style? It depends from day to day and on my mood. Sometimes, I like to dress up in a suit. Most times, I just want to keep it casual and wear something such as a blazer on a pair of jeans. But, I always add a good watch to whatever I wear. Nothing else describes my personal style better! Talking of watches, tell us about your recent high-on-adrenaline association with Tag Heuer. Interestingly, my relationship with Tag Heuer started when I was really young. It was one of the first watches I wanted to own. My parents gifted me a Tag Heuer on my 13th birthday and it excited me. Nineteen years down the line, to be associated with the brand is really humbling. I really have to pinch myself sometimes to believe that I am now part of the Tag Heuer family. The four principle Ps of Tag Heuer—Prestige, Precision, Passion and Performance, are the four principles I identify with and can apply to how I look at my career and life.
Which is your favourite collection and your favourite timepiece from Tag Heuer? The Tag Heuer Grand Prix edition is one of my favourites because it was one of the first watches I ever owned. I am also extremely thrilled about the Jack Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 edition, which was gifted to me by Tag Heuer. The Formula 1 watch is super cool to sport, too. How important is a watch for you? Is it just something you use to keep track of your daily schedule, or is it a way of accessorising for you? A watch is definitely a style statement and a wardrobe staple. It’s like an extension of your personality. Having a good watch on your wrist also gives you confidence; there is something about the look and feel of a good watch on my wrist. It makes everything feel right and I start approaching things more systematically. So to me a watch is an accessory that makes a statement about who I am and what I do. Coming to people, who are the most significant people in your life who have inspired you the most? One of the people who have inspired my life the most is my grandfather, Mr Raj Kapoor, for the kind of work he did. I was very young when he passed away. Whatever I know today about cinema and about him is through his work. The second person is definitely Lionel Messi. He is my favourite football player. What I really admire is the way he approaches the game, how concentrated he is on the field and even in his life. For him, it’s not just about the game. It’s about scoring and winning and that’s the kind of approach that I look up to. I like to apply that level of concentration and mindset in my own life, too.
