A steamin’ cuppa with...
‘I want to
surprise people’ She is fresh and funky, an actor who is known for her girl-nextdoor image and her challenging roles. Shraddha Kapoor talks about her career and her fashion label... By Aarti Kapur Singh
S
hraddha Kapoor has a sense of style that is approachable and yet edgy. Despite that image, the star with a peaches-and-cream complexion confesses to be partial towards traditional outfits. “I love the traditional look and have over the years learned to appreciate the fusion in Indian wear. Recently, there have been two outfits that have mesmerised me with their overall look and design. The sari that designer Sabyasachi gifted me meant a lot. It was stunning! The second is the blue sari I wore in Aashiqui 2. People started making its duplicates and the jhumkas I wore with them. They even started tagging me on Instagram. It was crazy!” exclaims Shraddha. The actor, who turned 26 on March 3, had an ideal debut opposite Ben Kingsley and Amitabh Bachchan in Teen Patti, but the only thing she ever got for being star-struck was the Filmfare Best Debut nomination. “Before Teen Patti released, I auditioned for a really important film. I was dying to get it. I worked day and night and gave the audition everything. But I didn’t get the role,” shares Shraddha. The film was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s My Friend Pinto opposite Prateik Babbar. After Teen Patti released and tanked, Kalki Koechlin replaced her in the movie. This was a real blow to her. Her second outing, Luv Ka The End, also didn’t set the cash registers ringing. “I would often wonder what it would feel like to be in a film that was successful. I didn’t get into depression 4 ambience mall
or anything, but it did make me wonder how would it feel like to have people clicking your pictures,” says Shraddha. Her wishes were soon answered. In 2013, Kapoor found her breakthrough role in Mohit Suri’s romantic musical drama, Aashiqui 2, the sequel to the 1990 film Aashiqui. She was casted as Aarohi Keshav Shirke, a small-town bar singer who becomes a successful playback artiste with the help of a popular male singer, Rahul Jaikar (played by Aditya Roy Kapur). “After the success of ‘Aashiqui 2’, I felt I need to conquer a lot more. I am constantly working towards it and I will work harder. Nobody expected ‘Aashiqui 2’ could do so well as it had two new faces. That Friday changed so many lives: mine, Mohit Suri (director) and also that of Aditya Roy Kapur (actor), besides the singers and music composers,” Shraddha admits candidly. Film critic Anupama Chopra termed her as a “real triumph” and added that her “porcelain face has a haunting vulnerability.” Kapoor next reunited with Suri for the thriller Ek Villain (2014) for which she also sang the song “Galliyan”. Her second release that year was Vishal Bhardwaj’s critically acclaimed drama Haider, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet set during the Kashmir conflict of 1995. She played the character of Ophelia, a journalist named Arshia Lone. “Talking about Haider, it feels immensely wonderful when people appreciate the patience and hard work I had put in. It feels good when your efforts pay off and you get noticed. Being an actress

was always my childhood dream and I’m glad I didn’t give up on it easily,” says the actor. However, the young lady is not in a hurry to reach the top, but would rather do fresh roles that challenge her. “It is a conscious effort on my part to do different roles. I want to do something that people have not seen before and surprise everyone. There has to be variety in work,” she says adding, competition is not scary. I know competition is there and it can come my way by new, fresh faces that are around or are coming up. It pushes me to work harder. I know if I don’t work hard I will be left behind.” At present, Kapoor is shooting a sequel to the dance film ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, entitled ABCD 2, opposite Varun Dhawan, which is scheduled for release in June this year. She has also committed to star as a singer in a sequel to the 2008 film Rock On!!, co-starring Farhan Akhtar, Purab Kohli and Arjun Rampal. The multi-tasker is also foraying into fashion and designing with her own label, Imara, colaunched with Universal Sportsbiz. Experimenting with ethnic designs, Imara offers a refreshing take on fashion. Themed across eight stories: Blue Pottery, Mughal, Spring Blossom, Damask, Monochrome, Lucknowi, Indigo and Boho, Shraddha Kapoor has provided creative inputs in terms of designs and cuts, the final product has been crafted by designers who brought her thoughts to life. “Launching my own fashion line has always been something I wanted to pursue. For as long as I can remember, I have been in love with clothes, with fashion and the idea of designing my own collection has always fascinated me. My penchant for creating something trendy, contemporary and a line that is an extension of my personality is how Imara was born. The process of designing Imara has been an extremely gratifying creative expedition for me. I worked with some of the best designers across the country, shared my ideas with them and saw them work their magic and bring those to life. Watching my ideas for Imara materialise so beautifully is one of the greatest experiences I’ve had so far,” says Shraddha.

ollywood is moving towards creating fashion rather than just wearing designer clothes. After leading director Karan Johar’s association with Vero Moda, it is the first lady of Bollywood, Gauri Khan. Making her debut in fashion designing, the style icon collaborated with Satya Paul, India’s premier design label with an international presence for their spring-summer 2015 collection. The brand marks its 30th anniversary in the Indian fashion industry with the Tropical Wonder collection. Inspired by an exotic holiday, this line explores

lush prints rendered on casual and occasional wear separates like sheer tunics, flowing kaftans, shift dresses and fluid sarees Gauri’s unparalleled eye for detail, a glamorous worldview and an effortless take on style has been incorporated into her debut collection for the brand. A creative entrepreneur in her own right, she has lent her design sensibilities to the signature line in which she incorporated the use of luxurious prints for a line of casual and occasion holiday wear. The clothing and accessories collection has a lot of palm motifs and calligraphic scribbles. In terms of colours, the

palette had fresh citrus, aquatic shades, deep ombre and sunset tones. One who loves to experiment and try different colours in one look surely loved what Gauri’s collection had to offer. The first lady of Bollywood prefers saree over western gowns and was elated when the brand proposed the idea to her. Expressing her love towards the six-yard wonder, Gauri says, “When I talk about the brand Satya Paul, the first thing which comes to my mind is sari apart from all the shirts and various things.” The mother of three discloses that she took the inspiration from the past collection of the brand and their use of colours. “I was an artist and I love colours and Satya Paul’s collection always have some colourful outfits. This inspired my tropical collection. Next year also you will see more vibrant and pumped-up dresses from me,” adds Gauri. Much like her own disposition, the garments have been tailored to exude a natural poise and are styled in a contemporary fashion, making it ideal for the Indian summer. Targetted at the young Indian woman, with all her moods, be it strong, sensual, feminine or vulnerable, this urban inspired collection includes apparel and accessories for women and is available in Satya Paul stores.

Your summer guide to a
youthful skin
Keeping your skin looking young and beautiful is tough, especially during summers when the sunrays beam down. Protect it all day from the UV rays even when you’re not lounging outside By Aarti Kapur Singh
M
ost of us neglect protecting our skin from the summer sun. Apart from a sunscreen, using the correct facewash and antiageing products is critical in summers. Set your sights on these tips to prepare you for a summer of skincare success and promise yourself that to look fresh and gorgeous. Hot and humid conditions also call for deep pore cleansing, especially for oily skin to keep the pores free of clogged oil and dirt. After washing or cleansing the skin, cleansing grains or a scrub should
40 ambience mall
be used. Cleansing grains can be mixed with a skin tonic and rubbed gently on the skin, in a circular motion. “The first step to achieve a healthy-looking skin begins with gentle yet effective cleansing that protects the skin barrier. Alkaline-based cleansers can be harsh and damage the skin barrier,” states Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s Product Development Consulting Dermatologist. “Once there are tiny cracks in the skin barrier, it increases the possibility of irritation and allergies. When cleansing the face, using a soap-free formula is an integral part of maintaining the skin barrier function,” he adds.
tips by Shahnaz Husain for fresh and young skin The queen of Ayurvedic beauty, Shahnaz Husain gives us some pointers to keep skin fresh and young. ○ Use herb and flowerbased products or ones with fruit extracts in summer. ○ D rink as much of water as possible, preferably at room temperature. ○ I f you are out during the day, carry a small bottle of rose skin tonic in your handbag so that you can use it whenever the skin feels sweaty and greasy. Wet tissues can be an option too.
A good skin toner is a must in hot and humid weather to cleanse and refresh the skin. A flower-based skin tonic, containing rose or lavender, is ideal. Or you can use rose water, if you have normal to dry skin. It refreshes the skin and imparts a clean and fresh feeling. Cleansing of the skin before bedtime is even more important. The dirt and pollutants
deposited on the skin during the day must be removed. This not only helps reduce surface oil, but protects the skin from pimples, spots and other eruptions. An anti-ageing product works best during the night, especially in summers as you don’t have to counter balmy weather with a greasy face. Without question, it is our eyes that show our age first. The eye area ageing affects the entire eye contour with the appearance of lines and wrinkles, crow’s feet and sagging skin. “The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the body and experiences an increase in thinning during the ageing process. Couple this with constant movement associated with contracture of the 14 muscles involved in the opening and closing of the eyelids and you see fine lines and wrinkles as well as the formulation of crow’s feet, starting to form even in our 20s.” shares Dr Adam Geyer. Talking about the benefits of Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Face Wash, Dr Geoff Genesky, head of Kiehl’s Skin Care Laboratory, research and innovation manager, says, “We have carefully selected an amino acid-based surfactant to cleanse deeply while ensuring a gentle yet rich foam, while a vegetable-based surfactant to achieve a thoroughly clean yet not overly dry skin.”
○ U se Shaface (Herbal Facial Skin Conditioner) once a week. It provides a deep cleansing treatment, giving glow and lustre to the skin, tightening the pores and minimising blemishes. ○ U se deep cleansing lotion Shamint which serves the dual purpose of cleansing as well as moisturising for people with oily skin.

Tempting bites Follow the post-movie tradition and indulge in a delectable meal at Mistral, located next to PVR Director’s Cut By Kamya Kandhari

here are very few places where you can sit, relax and vouch for a variety to come over. Mistral, located on the third floor of Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj is one of its own kind. Tucked in a quiet corner, next to PVR Director’s Cut. Notably it stands as a part of PVR group’s deli and bar. The place has set a versatile menu, inspired from some of the finest cuisines – Italian, Indian, Mediterranean, Moroccan and Thai. What is really impressive here is that while trying to flirt with different varieties of cuisines, the chef at Mistral does a complete justice to the place of origin of every dish being served on the platter! The restaurant has a subtle seating arrangement, keeping in mind the comfort factor for all. It has couches and low seats on one end for all those who probably want to lounge around while towards the entrance, it has high bar chairs, for those craving for a quick drink on the go. It has an seating capacity of 103. (Below) Pasta with bell tomatoes (bottom right) Scrambled egg with pita bread

There is a small bookstore towards the right, next to the entrance. A few steps ahead, there is an open-sky beer bar, vodka and whisky bar and an open kitchen. To make the culinary experience more interesting, Mistral has got an extensive menu counting up on exotic wines, spirits and signature cocktails. During our conversation with executive chef Mayank Tiwari, we found out that Mistral completely relies upon the fresh veggies stock that they get from their own
farms located in proximity of the mall. Interestingly, they don’t back upon frozen food; they rather keep it ‘fresh n’ simple’. Coming on to our culinary delight for the evening. We started our meal with Koobideh kebab, a persian mined lamb kebab along with salad and pita. The kebab was in itself very fresh and tender whereas salad wrapped in the pita pocket was light and was set on as a perfect complement to the dish. Then came the very thing crust Porky pizza with toppings of delicious pork sausage,
pepperoni and bacon bits. Alongside, we had few salad samples including beetroot and goat cheese salad which had fresh beetroots, French beans with balsamic dressing and the other one was Tabbouleh of Quinoa. These salads were certainly fresh with concentrated flavours. Apart from the regular menu served at Mistral, there is a chef’s special menu with wine recommendations and an ‘All-day dinning’ menu option involving a complete meal set at affordable prices.

The car is packed with a lot more features than its diesel variant and is priced at `34.65 lakh (allIndia ex-showroom). If you need more adrenaline, more performance, more speed then this stylish ride is perfect for you. You’ll love the attention you get while driving the Mini around the city. Mini Cooper D It looks good and goes great. Is this the perfect premium hatchback?
L
et’s start with a history lesson. When launched in the 60s, the original Mini set the template for affordable hatchbacks which is now common practice. It’s front engined, front wheel drive layout made for compact packaging of mechanicals and released cabin space. Over the years, the Mini earned a name for itself in motorsports, winning numerous competitive events including the famous Monte Carlo Rally. With that kind of sporting heritage, we were expecting a lot from the new Mini Cooper D that visited the FHM garage this past month. But first, it’s USP, the design. This latest generation Mini is as retro as retro gets, and you’re guaranteed second glances everywhere it goes. Vintage details like chrome surround on the oval headlamps and the window line harks back to the original. So does the floating roof effect and wheels positioned at the corners of the car. What isn’t old school though is the car’s size. It’s not really a ‘mini’ anymore. It has actually grown in size over the last generation, although it’s still smaller than a Mercedes A-class. Thankfully it was as much fun to drive as we hoped. If you’ve ever driven a go-kart at a decent clip, you know exactly what we mean. The Mini turns into corners almost telepathically, with nearly no body roll to speak of. The thick rimmed steering wheel is fantastic to hold and the way the car reacts to inputs is pure bliss. In fact the Mini is the most fun you can have in a front wheel drive car. Helping it’s cause is the three cylinder diesel engine, that punches above it’s weight. It may not have the kick-in-the-backside feel in a standing start, but boy does it get going once on the move. Ton up speeds come easy and the quick shifting box keeps it spinning in the meaty part of the power band. Which is exactly what you need for covering distances quickly. For all practical purposes, the three door we drove, should be treated as a two seater. The rear seats are best used as luggage space, for the boot isn’t too big. If in a situation you do need the seats, let’s say for the girl friends’s friends, pray they are petite not voluptuous. Otherwise get the five door. At `31. 85 lakh, it is fully loaded, though there are more practical alternatives. But nothing is as much fun to drive or good looking. If you can, we say, take the plunge.
Traditional chrome toggle switches add to the Mini’s old school charm.

Hybrid power Gone are the days when touchscreens merely added 'cool' factor to laptops By Swapneel Bandiwadekar
O
ne might ask why not just pickup a tablet instead of a touchscreen laptop. Nice question but tablets usually don’t have the same power. Plus, two-inone machines pack keyboards to offer the same level of convenience. There isn’t a single product like an iPhone in PCs but there are more choices for users and every single one has its own merits.
Since they are available in a wide variety, there is a machine suitable for every need and budget. But we don’t want you go on hunting and comeback home confused instead. That is why we have handpicked a few to get you started. This list contains both regular form factor as well as multimode machines. Pick up the one which you find right as we make your decision-making will be a lot easier.
15 inch HP Pavilion 15 There are two variants available in HP Pavilion 15 range and both come at different price points. The key difference is the processor. The lesser priced (`53,990) variant comes with a 4th Gen Core i5 processor while the other variant comes with a latest 5th gen Core i5 processor and is priced at `56,990. Rest of the specs remain same with 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD and 2GB Nvidia GeForce 830M graphics card.
Acer Aspire R7 Young professionals would fall for this one because of its design. Its Ezel mode gives you best of both the worlds by making its touch display float over the keyboard. As for the hardware, you get a 4th gen Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. But, be warned. You’re going to blow up your account as this one costs `84,000. Buy it if you are looking for flexibility combined with a larger screen.

14 inch
Dell Inspiron 14
Acer Aspire E1
Dell has launched two 14 inch touchscreen machines. Both come from the Inspiron 3000 series. The price difference between the two isn’t much but configuration options could be confusing. The first model has 4th gen Core i5 processor while the other one has 5th gen processor. In the second model you get 8GB RAM while the first one has 4GB. But the first one trumps as it has Nvidia GeForce 820M GPU with 2GB dedicated memory. So under graphics intensive tasks it is likely to perform better. Prices are `47,690 and `50,790 for first and second models respectively.
If you don’t need all the flexibility of an Ideapad Flex 2 nor want to spend money on Dell’s offerings then you might want to consider Acer’s Aspire E1. You would still get the compactness of a 14 inch chassis. Cheaper price tag comes with its obvious trade-offs. This one has couple generations old 3rd gen Core i3 processor mated to 4GB of RAM. It features a 14 inch HD (720p) display. You can pick it up for `33,000.
Lenovo Ideapad Flex 2 If I were to pick-up a touchscreen laptop, my preference would be to the multi-mode one like Lenovo’s Ideapad Flex 2. These multi-mode machines let you use and enjoy touch-screen the way it should be. Flex 2 offers two modes, laptop and stand. Stand mode is useful when you have just show a presentation to someone or enjoy a movie. In stand mode, it’s way more engaging as you can interact more closely without keyboard getting into your way. You get to choose between Core i3 or Core i5 processor. Although, Flex 2 series has 14 inch screen on all its models, there two resolution choices: HD (720p) and FullHD (1080p). 8GB SSD is standard across the range combined with 500GB HDD for storage. Since the OS will be loaded on the SSD you will witness faster boot times and quicker response from the machine. Pricing starts at `39,000 and goes as high as `50,000.

13 inch Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 3 Pro Lenovo is the pioneer in multi-mode laptop segment. At present Lenovo holds two Yoga series, a Yoga 2 and the latest Yoga 3. If you’re someone who wants latest and greatest products, then take a look at Lenovo’s Yoga 3 Pro. Be prepared to shell out whopping `1,15,000. What do you get in return? It is truly a masterpiece in terms of design as it uses watchband inspired hinges that has 813 individual aluminum pieces. It’s not any less on spec sheet either. It gets it processing power from a mighty Core M processor and 8GB of RAM. Both combined, drive the gorgeous 13 inch 2K Quad HD display on Yoga 3 Pro. 512GB SSD boosts the performance while also offering adequate storage. The only concern about Yoga 3 Pro is the battery life which Lenovo claims as up to 7.2 hours.
Acer Aspire R13 Acer’s Aspire R7 has an impressive design but not everyone will find its big 15 inch comfortable. What if you get same flexibility, same engaging experience but in a compact package? Yes, you do get it with Acer’s Aspire R13, a 13 inch variant of its R7. The hardware is similar and powerful. It’s powered by a 4th gen Core i5 processor paired with 8GB RAM. It’s better than its elder sibling as Acer has replaced slower HDD with a speedier 512GB SSD and the 13.3 display is beautiful too with crisp FullHD (1080p) resolution. Available exclusively through Croma’s retail stores and costs same as the bigger R7 at `84,000.
11 inch Dell Inspiron 11 2-in-1
HP Pavilion 11
Dell is present here too. Surprised? Dell has only two configurations available in this range but I would recommend the one with Core i3 processor. So, let’s have a look at the better one. For `41,290, you get a 11 inch multimode machine that has 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD. HD 720p resolution is stretched across its 11 inch touchscreen. At just 1.4 kg, it’s quite lightweight and portable.
HP’s only offering in the 11 inch segment and their only multi-mode machine. HP has recently refreshed it to add a better and powerful processor which is Intel Core M 5Y10c. This one easily beats Intel’s Core i3 processors with a better battery life. Its specs include 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and an 11.6 inch touchscreen display with HD (720p) resolution and is priced at just `40,000.

“I am committed to fitness... He is a model, actor, owner of a soccer club, but the role John Abraham cherishes the most is that of a fitness icon By Aarti Kapur Singh
72 ambience mall
“I
am more of a fitness fan, than an icon myself. But if my commitment to fitness motivates people, I am happy with that too!” quips John. His body type is ecto-mesomorph, which means he keeps fluctuating between lean and muscular. “The most challenging part of my body type is that it is easy to gain weight on the joints, rather than the muscles and that means I have to constantly keep working out or be involved in physical exercise to help my muscles put on the bulk, rather than other parts of my body,” reveals the actor. John firmly believes fad diets don’t work and says, “What works is burning calories not controlling them. So eat right and eat well. Starving only makes you bloat up.” John also believes that there are no short cuts to success and working out is the benchmark of having a good physique. He says he has never indulged in growth hormones or steroids and doesn’t want others to do it either. “The use of unnatural substances is unacceptable to get a ‘body’. Not only is it not right, it could have serious side effects like hair loss, high blood pressure, mood swings, loss of libido and enlarged glands. Stay away from the short cuts,” he warns, while adding, “I take protein supplements or multi vitamins
John Abraham’s workout plan Chest: Flat bench press, Incline dumbbell press, decline pull over, cable cross over Shoulder: Barbell shoulder press, dumbbell Arnold press, dumbbell lateral raise, front raise, Biceps: Barbell curl, dumbbell alternate bicep curl, concentration curls, Triceps: Dumbbell tricep kickback, close grip bench press, cable pushdown, Forearms: Barbell wrist curl, palms down dumbbell wrist curl, Back: Barbell dead lift, pull ups, wide grip lat pull down, cable seated row, one arm dumbbell row Legs: Barbell front squat, leg press, seated leg curl, calf press, leg extension Cardio: Treadmill running and walking Abs: Exercise ball reverse crunch, hanging leg raise, plank, leg raise.
to recover and heal muscles, but that is about it.” What you eat is what you are. And this adage holds true for John Abraham as well, who gives equal importance to eating right and working out in achieving an ideal body. “I burn about 5,000 calories per day and consume a lot of high protein and carbs. I begin my day with a cup of green tea or milk before hitting the gym. My breakfast comprises four egg whites or a potato or sweet potato with carbs and some brown bread to fulfil the carb intake. Post my workout, I have the whites of about six eggs with a protein shake,” reveals John. For lunch, John prefers traditional and simple meals. “My lunch usually comprises two chapattis made of wheat flour, yellow dal, spinach and some stir-fried vegetables,” he says. John also confesses of continuously munching on something, but he ensures that it is light and healthy. “For the kind of action and work I do, I need to energise my system every couple of hours. When you are active, it is okay to munch on something in order to give you enough energy and keep your metabolism active. A handful of almonds, or a banana, or a glass of fruit juice are my favourite snacks,” he says. Overall, John’s diet consists of 50 per cent protein, 20 per cent carbohydrates, 20 per cent fibre, 10 per cent anti-oxidants and essential fats. Discipline is also paramount to being fit. John does not eat carbs after 5 in the evening and ensures he has his dinner by 8pm. Talking of working out, John’s schedule involves working on two body parts a day – a big muscle followed by a small muscle. “For instance, I work out chest and triceps one day and shoulder and biceps, the other. Legs are worked out twice a week. I also make sure I sun for about 20 minutes after each exercise. For those that want to bulk up and build muscle size, the way to go is to do weights first and cardio at the end. You get a much better endurance training effect from running after lifting weights,” the actor advises.
