will observe the National Mourning Day on August 15, paying tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his 43rd anniversary of martyrdom. One of the most influential political personalities of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was no ordinary human – he was a national hero. As an architect of today’s Bangladesh, it was only Bangabandhu who managed to establish an independent state for Bengalis. Like previous years, the Sheikh Hasinaled government, Awami League and different political and socio-cultural organisations, educational institutions and professional groups have chalked out elaborate programmes to pay due respect to the greatest son of the soil on the day of his martyrdom. Every year on this day, the national flag of Bangladesh is kept at half-mast atop all government, semi-government and autonomous bodies and educational institutions. In line with the national programme, ministries and departments, directorates and agencies will organise various programmes at their respective institutions. The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh.

Biman

Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier, began its journey on January 4, 1972, immediately after the independence of Bangladesh through the Liberation War. Despite many odds on its journey towards a long and challenging path of progress, Biman has been able to establish its reputation as an airline with a welcoming smile and an ocean of hospitality. Biman’s journey started with a modest small Dakota plane. This year, as Biman celebrates its 46th anniversary, it proudly announces the induction of first two of the four brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliners in its fleet. From a Dakota to a Dreamliner, with this glorious journey, Biman is poised to enter a new era. A modern-age aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is being heralded as a gamechanger for the national carrier. The industryleading technology of the 787 Dreamliner

will create remarkable opportunities for our beloved airline and dramatically improve the air travel experience for our esteemed customers. We fondly call it the Dreamliner effect. The 787’s unparalleled fuel efficiency and range flexibility will enable Biman to profitably open new routes as well as optimise fleet and network performance. And for our valued passengers, it will be an experience like none other in the air, with more comfort and less fatigue. This is the Dreamliner effect. Boeing designed the 787 Dreamliner keeping the passengers in mind, right from the start. With the largest windows of any jet; cleaner, more comfortable air; a smoother ride; and space for everyone’s bag; you’ll arrive feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy life. Our new Dreamliner aircraft will have a total of 271 seats, comprising 24 in Business Class and 247 in Economy Class. The Business Class seat will be 180 degrees reclined total flatbed. The Economy Class seat will have a comfortable 31-inch pitch. Whether you are seeking a superior experience for business or leisure travel, Biman’s new 787 Dreamliner is an exemplary option, connecting you to major cities of the world. With the induction of the four Dreamliners, we are set to expand our network to more destinations in Asia, Australia, Europe and even in North America. The B 787 Dreamliner, the wonder of the sky, is a mid-size, dual aisle, twin-engine jet. It is 20% more fuel efficient compared to similar-sized commercial jets. Composite materials make up 50% of the primary structure, including the fuselage and wing. Boeing lists its materials by weight as 50% composite, 20% aluminum, 15% titanium, 10% steel and 5% other.

The engine nacelles are made of serrated edges that reduce the noise levels both outside and inside the cabin, by up to 60%. The aircraft also features a raked wingtip to further improve the fuel efficiency. This long-haul aircraft can perform 15-hour non-stop flight covering distance up to 13,602 km. Its cruising airspeed is Mach 0.85, equivalent to 903 km/hour at typical cruise altitudes.

The museum is not that large, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for it with the treasures it holds for visitors. Endearingly enough, it is like stepping back into Victorian times. Although called ‘pahar’, literally translated as hills or mountains, the clay hills are little more than mounds of clay and trees, surrounding a beautiful river of blue water, making for a picture-perfect view. This place is ideal for private picnics.

know that Bangladesh is famous for its potterymaking, but how many of you are aware of the place that supplies most of the clay? Situated in Birisiri, Netrokona, the China Clay Hills supplies most of the clay that is used in the famous ‘maatir haari’ or clay pots of Bangladesh. A secluded spot that not many know about, China Matir Pahar (China Clay Hills) are an untouched wonder of Bangladesh. The clay and certain unique chemicals give the water a clear turquoise colour that is very rare in this country, adding to the mysterious beauty of the place.

There are a few ways to go about reaching the spot. There is a direct bus from Mohakhali, Dhaka to Birisiri, Netrokona. From Netrokona, take a motorcycle ride to the clay hills. a more fun ride, if one has enough time in hand. It is wise to book the rickshaw a night before the trip and ask the rickshaw puller to come to your accommodation spot very early in the morning. The rickshaw ride will not be so smooth so prepare for a bone clattering ride.

The water is shallow enough for nonswimmers to wade in

However, many believe that the best way to reach the clay hills is by boat. A motorboat costs around 1200tk and gets you close to the hills in just an hour. For someone with more time on their hands and a natureloving heart, a more tranquil and relaxed way to reach the place is to take a row boat. It costs about half the price of a motorboat, offers you three hours to enjoy the water and both the boats take you to Ranikhong, close enough to the site to only require a short rickshaw ride to complete the journey.

Where to stay

When it comes to accommodation, Netrokona has government guest houses - YMCA and YWCA - of passable quality that you can spend a night in for as low as 400tk for two people. The rooms are clean and simple, with no extra amenities except for an attached bathroom, bed and a few basic amenities. There is, however, an outfield with barbeque facilities, which is a blessed addition.

There are no materialistic entertainment facilities at the China Matir Pahar. Instead, it is a laid-back and scenic spot that one can enjoy with friends. Simple pleasures and an unforgettable view make up most of the package that this spot has to offer. As China Matir Pahar gets slowly discovered by adventure/travel enthusiasts, tourists are requested to enjoy this national resource but respect it enough to leave it clean for others to enjoy it as well. After all, hidden gems retain their sheen the longest!

pilgrimage, performed in this Islamic month of Zil-Hajj, is a spiritual journey that takes the pilgrims’ souls beyond the ritualistic forms of worship. It acquaints them with the true spirit of devotion to God that is attained through selfless service to humanity. It imbibes universal brotherhood, social affinity, religious harmony and multifaceted aspects of unity in human life. Performing Hajj, one the five pillars of Islam, is obligatory for every Muslim, at least once in his/her lifetime, provided he/she is physically and financially capable to travel to the holy city of Mecca in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Though Hajj is an Islamic pilgrimage epitomising the deep faith, constant struggle and righteousness of Prophet Abraham, his wife Hajrah and his son Isma’il, its benefits are all-encompassing and not just confined to religious spheres of life. The harmonious global effects of Hajj are equally beneficial for one

Besides, Hajj rituals convey a strong message of all-round peace: peace with oneself, peace among Muslims, peace with non-Muslims and peace with environment and nature. The three Islamic months fixed for performing the Hajj are Dhul Qa'dah, Dhul Hijjah and Muharram. Hajj is not just an in-flight physical trip. It is rather a journey of the soul and heart; a continued spiritual journey in divine light. During the Hajj pilgrimage, a pilgrim feels the evolution of his/her soul. It creates such deep spiritual influences in the hearts of the pilgrims that they feel as if they were still pilgrims even after their return from the pilgrimage. Hajjis (pilgrims) find new meaning in their life after returning from Mecca because the sole purpose of this pilgrimage is the purification of the heart. This is the highest culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) referred to in his saying: “Whoever performs the rituals of Hajj, while having refrained from acts of lewdness, obscenity and wrangling, will return home like a new born human being (i.e. free from all sins).”

One

of the most accessible cities in Asia, Singapore is a fascinating blend of local neighbourhoods, large-scale attractions, shopping malls and lesser-known sights. However, beyond all these, there lies another Singapore that's not usually frequented by tourists. These flea markets often pop up in various corners of the city, offering people vintage and limitededition steals at prices light on the pocket. Here are few that you can look up to in your next sojourn.

Fleawhere

As Singapore’s most frequent and largest flea organiser, Fleawhere has got flea markets ongoing every day! Regardless of whether you are a youngster with an urge for all new-age stuff or an executive looking for some office material, Fleawhere won't disappoint you! For example, MOX Parade, is a place where local artists, fashion designers and the like sell their stuff. Similarly, Maker’s Parade is the place for all things handmade.

Flea markets in Singapore are not just about fashion, food plays an integral part here. PasarBella is famous for fresh seafood, meat, cheeses and baked goodies. Packed with quaint stalls, exotic aromas and festivities, it’s more than just a market. It’s a definite experience. It is a farmer's market with rustic interiors and diverse food and retail offerings. One can also find several varieties of groceries here.

China Square Central Weekend Flea Market

Spend an idyllic Sunday afternoon browsing the collectibles of over 60 vendors selling goods, clothes and home decor items from both vintage and contemporary toy collectibles to handmade crafts to cheap accessories and innovative gadgets. It's fully air-conditioned, so you don't have to worry about the heat.

SG Really, Really Free Market

SGRRFM is a place where you can shop for free. Everyone is invited to bring their stuff to share at the market, and if you find something interesting, you’re free to take it as well. Held every two months at temporary locations, the SGRRFM aims to reduce consumer wastage by promoting sharing and giving in the community. You might also encounter people sharing a craft or skill, such as yoga, tarot card reading and more. The most common items you’ll find there are secondhand clothes, books and vintage collectibles. The stuff may not be as shiny as some of the other flea markets, but you can't complain as it's free.

LEISURE 24 Hours

As

your flight descends into Colombo, all you can see is a sea of green courtesy the lush coconut plants that dot the island. It is also a perfect precursor of what to expect in this tropical Sinhalese island.

Sights & Sounds

Start your day on a spiritual note by stopping at the beautiful Gangaramaya Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples here. There are a number of Buddha statues inside the premises as well as murals that are quite intricate and fascinating. There is a museum, a library and a Bodhi tree in the courtyard here as well. Also head to the Independence Memorial Hall, an ode to the independence movement. This place houses a museum that is often overlooked but has some noteworthy cultural exhibits on display. Likewise, the National Museum of Colombo, which dates back to the late 19th

A special recommendation are the wood masks that are bright and colourful. They also make for a lovely gift item

Colombo has tropical hot weather throughout the year. Keep yourself hydrated and protected from the sun at all times.

at Pettah Train Station or kottu roti at Hotel de New Pilawoos, there is a lot to savour here. For a relaxed lunch, head to Nuga Gama at Cinnamon Grand that dishes up traditional Sri Lankan fare. The must-try here are string hoppers, which are akin to steamed rice noodles and team well with sweet or spicy toppings and a coconut. Non-vegetarians can relish the sour fish curry, fish ambul thiyal, here. If you are vegetarian, there are several choices here, including Indian restaurants as well as vegan ones like Cinnamon Red, OZO Colombo and Smokey’s – The Brownie Bar. If you are non-vegetarian, a visit to the Ministry of Crab that has all kinds of crab-based dishes, prawns and seafood rice tossed in a variety of delectable sauces is a must.
