Patients with heart disease can now hope for better outcomes with innovative treatment methods “The worry was worse than the pain. It showed a lack of awareness”

Prof. Dr. Fazila Tun Nesa Malik, Chief Consultant Cardiologist – National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute

Findings from an epidemiological study (Indian Heart J. 2013 Jul; 65(4): 424–435) done in Bangladesh shares the following insights on the prevalence of heart disease in the Sub-continent: 1.  Prevalence of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) that causes heart attack is 10 folds higher in our part of the world than that of Western world. 2.  Heart attack is both severe in nature and manifests at much younger age (5 to 10 years earlier) in our region than in developed nations. 3. Prevalence is 5 folds higher in urban population than in rural. 4.  Although mortality rates due to CardioVascular Disease is higher in males in Bangladesh but it is growing faster now in female population than it was 30 years ago. Is Bangladesh geared to combat the rising disease burden and mortality due to this endemic? Surprisingly, the problem to fix is not only the capability of the healthcare institutes or their treatment options, but the need today is to raise general awareness on lifestyle changes to prevent heart diseases, timely detection of symptoms and management of heart diseases through technology available in Bangladesh.

Speaking about this one of the eminent female Interventional Cardiologist and globally acclaimed for her huge experience in this field, Prof. Dr. Fazila Tun Nesa Malik, Chief Consultant Cardiologist – National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute said, “People with heart diseases can now hope for a better quality of life and prevent mortality thanks to many innovative treatment methodologies available today in Bangladesh. Most of our hospitals are now well-equipped to screen for any heart-related ailments. In the last decade, the medical devices technology has advanced significantly, especially in the non-invasive, catheter-based therapy space. Among the non-communicable diseases (NCD’S), Cardiovascular diseases is the leading cause of death in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has attained satisfactory standard for treatment, prevention and control of Cardiovascular diseases both in Government and Nongovernment sectors.

Drug Eluting Stents (DES): Integral to treatment of heart attack and artery diseases through the procedure called Angioplasty, newer DES available today is more deliverable reaching the most inaccessible lesions and release medications for 180 days that reduces the likelihood of a repeat blockage. Holter Monitor: This is a small and portable device that can be worn. It helps record continuous ECG patterns taken over a time frame of 24 to 72 hours. It can detect rhythmic abnormalities that may not show up in a normal ECG. Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS) Unlike a standard pacemaker, the leadless pacemaker in its small, capsulized form allows it to be implanted using a catheter through a vein in the leg, similar to how a DES is inserted.

Some innovative technologies available today in this field are as follows:

Pacemaker: This is a small device placed under the skin in the chest and helps control heartbeat. It also helps the heart beat more regularly in people with arrhythmia. Pacemakers can be single or dual chamber or biventricular. The biventricular pacemaker is also known as the Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is used in patients with heart failure.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: This is a non-surgical and non-invasive approach to treat severe aortic stenosis (AS) - a condition where Aortic Heart Valve deteriorates over a period of time. Recommended to high risk patients where Open Heart Surgery seems risky, patients may be discharged in just couple of days post procedure.

In conclusion, hospitals of Bangladesh today host plethora of treatment options reflecting the latest in technological advancements in Cardiology. However, unless we raise the general awareness of timely detection and share these options of treatment among the masses, the statistics of the epidemiological study might continue to reflect gloomy picture.

“Technological advances in the treatment of heart diseases in the recent years have been directed at reducing readmissions, improving the quality of life, and saving heart muscle.”

of the common man. Bangabandhu, as he was later called, was also a firm believer in the rich cultural and literary heritage of Bangladesh and for him that was the springboard of the Bangalee ethos, its tradition and its nationalism. That instilled in him the pride of being a Bangalee living in Sonar Bangla. Sheikh Mujib was an eighth grader at Gopalganj Mission School when he first spent time behind bars for taking part in protests against the British rule. He became close to then top Muslim League leaders Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy and Shere-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq during his time at Kolkata’s Islamia College. He quickly established himself as a young leader and joined the Awami Muslim League. At the initiative of Mujib, the party was renamed as ‘Awami League’. He was arrested on March 11, 1948 for taking part in a general strike to have Bangla recognised as a state language. His political activities

fair to say that Manchester is a music lover’s haven, having gifted the world the likes of the Smiths, Chemical Brothers, or the Stone Roses. Football fans will be overjoyed when visiting the hallowed grounds of Old Trafford and cheering Manchester United on as they practice. But the city is more than just music and sports. You’ll find great food joints, hipster areas and cultural events taking place all around. Manchester can be roamed by a free bus service called the Metroshuttle that loops around the city centre taking you to all the prominent areas. There’s also a tram service called the Metrolink.

It may seem a little odd but some of the favourite places to discover in Manchester are the libraries. Take for example, Chetham’s Library - founded in 1653, it is the oldest English-speaking library in the world. manuscripts, including the 13th-century Flores Historiarum of Matthew Paris – a chronicle of world and English history; a 15th-century Aulus Gellius, bound for Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary; and an important compendium of Middle English poetry. The library’s wealth of special items and collections include illuminated manuscripts made for royalty to the minutiae of personal life – diaries, letters and account books. There’s also the Central Library, the iconic city venue, designed by E. Vincent Harris. While it was first opened in 1934, following a refurbishment in 2010, taking four years, the Grade II listed building has been brought into the 21st century by combining historic features with cutting-edge design. Targeting young readers has been the key for the new look and feel: there’s a “gaming area” with Xboxes and Playstations, as well as a children’s library in the 20,000 sq ft of new space.

Bangabandhu

- Father of the Bengali nation and the greatestever son of Bengali nation of thousand years - was an iconic personality of the world in all aspects of his vibrant political career especially of the Mother Language Movement in 1952, Liberation War in 1971 and above all his undisputed patriotism. Apart from all these, he was a travel-thirsty person. Whenever he travelled to beautiful places of any country of the world, the immense beauty of Bangladesh emerged in his mind. That is why, soon after the independence of Bangladesh, he also desired to portray a positive image of Bangladesh abroad through tourism and build a golden Bangla. Therefore, he established 'Bangladesh Tourism Corporation'. He really wanted to embellish Bangladesh like the Switzerland of Europe. Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been performing well to fulfill the unfinished task of Bangabandhu. Bangabandhu is a great legend for promoting the image of Bangladesh all over the world and is a great icon in the development of Bangladesh's tourism industry. He is not only an epical hero of our great liberation war, his political philosophy and political life has become a legend today in creating a bright image of Bangladesh in the international arena. As a developing country, the charismatic identity and image of Bangabandhu can serve as an important cornerstone in promoting Bangladesh's identity to the world and promoting and marketing the tourism industry.

Bangabandhu himself was a great travelloving person that we can find in many publications. In his autobiography the Unfinished Memoirs, Bangabandhu nicely articulated many places and delivered excellent details of his travel in China and other countries. He described it so well that the areas he traveled surface like pictures in front of our eyes. His book the Unfinished Memoirs delineated many travel stories of his visit to China, India and other countries. Bangladesh is now all set to celebrate the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 2020. Hon'ble Prime Minister H.E. Sheikh Hasina has already announced 17 March 2020 to 17 March 2021 as Mujib Year. A national committee has also been formed in this regard. On the occasion of celebrating Mujib birth centenary, Bangladesh is going to get a great opportunity to highlight and spread out the political ideology and philosophy of Bangabandhu across the globe.

enhancing image of Bangladesh abroad. Bangladesh can capitalise this characteristics figure for developing country's image and promoting Bangladesh tourism abroad. Many tourists visit Stratford Upon Avon in England to see the birthplace of William Shakespeare and South Africa to see the residence and political memories of Nelson Mandela. Same as the greatest son of this soil, founder of the independence, father of the nation and undisputed historical leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman can be promoted as a great legend and icon for attracting foreign tourists to Bangladesh. Regarding this issue, already a veteran journalist, editor and human right activist Sir Frank Peters made a proposal for the development of Bangladesh tourism industry by cashing in this advantage. He rightly mentioned in his article how Bangladesh can capitalise the charismatic figure and political philosophy of Bangabandhu for attracting foreign tourists while observing the Bangabandhu's birth centenary in 2020. Bangabandhu's birth place, early life, student life, political career, life in jail, his historic 7th March speech everything are the much-expected tourist attractions in Bangladesh. It is our duty

Mujibur Rahman's historic March 7 speech at the Racecourse Maidan was recognised

to portray all these things widely across the globe. Different publications and videographies should be developed and widely circulated. Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) and Department of Film and Publications (DFP) can work together in this regard. UNESCO has already designated Bangabandhu's historic 7th March speech a Documentary world heritage. His heroic speech "The Struggle this time is for our Emancipation, the Struggle this time is for our Independence" is still the greatest inspiration of our long history. This information should widely be circulated at home and abroad for inspiring the suppressed people all over the world.

Information about Bangabandhu's political career can also be of much interest to tourist because of such a political odyssey no other leader in the world took yet. Bangabandhu was imprisoned only at the age of 18 in 1938 for his nationalist speech in a political gathering, which is very rare. It was the Bangabandhu, who first use 'Bangladesh' in the conference of Students' League in Naryanganj.

Bangabandhu wanted to embellish Bangladesh like Switzerland of Europe

In 1946, he was elected as General Secretary of the central students union of Kolkata Islamia College. He started hunger strike at Dhaka Central Jail in support of the heroes of Bangla Language Movement in 1952. On June 23 of 1949, Bangabandhu was elected as Founder Joint Secretary of Awami Muslim League from the prison. The Hon'ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh H.E. Sheikh Hasina has already declared 2020 as the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Elaborate programme will be chalked out soon. Bangabandhu was a visionary leader for the promotion of tourism in this country, that is why he created Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) in the Presidential Order (P.O.) no -143 to develop tourism in this country. This P.O. itself is the excellent guideline and flagship for the future promotion and expansion of tourism industry in Bangladesh. To observe the birth centenary of Bangabandhu in a befitting manner and promote the Bangladesh tourism by capitalising this epical image, some specific activities may be taken to observe the birth centenary of Bangabandhu and let the world know about this great legend. Steps may be taken to make various types of multi-lingual publications and distributions of books, brochures, flyers on Bangabandhu and his works. Measures also may be taken to make a great exposure on Bangabandhu and his political philosophy in renowned international media. Constant publicity on Bangabandhu and his political life may be made in social media like facebook, twitter etc. Ministry of ICT may be entrusted with this responsibility. Several road-shows may be organised in major tourists generating countries across the globe to mark the Bangabandhu's birth centenary and invite foreign tourists to Bangladesh. An iconic structure may be created to commemorate the Bangabandhu's Birth Centenary. It is the moral obligation of Bangladesh to spread the political philosophy of Bangabandhu across the globe. This will help Bangladesh to attract more foreign tourists. The Author is a tourism specialist.

On

March 26, 1971, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s Independence following the crackdown on unarmed Bengalis on the midnight of March 25 by the Pakistani occupation forces. After the nine-month-long War of Liberation with the supreme sacrifices of three million martyrs and the honour of two lakh women, Bangladesh achieved its cherished independence on December 16, 1971. The day is a public holiday in the country. Different sociocultural and political organisations have designed elaborate programmes on the occasion. The national anthem ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’ will be sung simultaneously across the country and Bangladesh missions abroad. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lead the nation in singing the national anthem at the main programme of ‘Jatiya Shishu Kishore Samabesh’, scheduled to be held at Bangabandhu National Stadium. The

In

the port city of Chattogram, a structure with multiple domes and soaring minarets painted in bright colours compels the people passing by to halt and praise its beauty. Situated amidst the hustle and bustle of always-busy Nawab Siraj udDaulah Road, Chandanpura Mosque is one of the most famous landmarks in the city as well as a popular tourist attraction known for its impressive architecture. Said to be a great example Mughalinspired architecture, the spacious interior, slender columns, elongated buttresses and intricately designed balusters of Masjid-e-Siraj ud-Daulah, locally known as Chandanpura Jame Masjid, can impress each and every kind of traveller. According to various historians, the masjid was built in 1870 and was known as HamidiaTaj-Masjid. Various builders and architects from Lucknow and Mumbai (both in India) were brought in for the work. However, in 1947, an initiative was taken to renovate the mosque, which was completed in 1952. At that time, around Taka 4 lakh was required for the renovation. Currently, the two-storey structure with an entrance in the middle has two staircases zigzagging to the top of two minarets on both sides. Both minarets are around sevenstorey tall. Railings of the staircases have multi-coloured floral designs. In total, there are five domes with a large onion dome at the centre -- surrounded by

The massive vaulted-gate was constructed not only as an entrance, but also to welcome all. Alongside being a prayer hall, this place offered people a place to unwind. People came here to sit back and relax. Today, the major attraction of the mosque are its minarets. They were constructed in such a way that there was ample space for sunlight to enter the floors. While visiting the place, do try and play some “hide and seek” with sunlight and shadows. Located between Andarkilla and Chawkbazar intersections -- two denselypopulated areas in the city, there is worry that rapid urban sprawl may eventually have a negative impact on the area, especially the structure of the mosque.

During a recent visit, this correspondent also saw several multistoried buildings were being constructed in the area while heavy vehicles plying the adjacent roads throughout the day. Banker Pallavi said when heavy vehicles continue to ply the road next to the mosque, its columns vibrate. Base of the structure may become unstable due to that, she said. In order to preserve the mosque, it is necessary that a ban is placed on the movement of heavy vehicles on the road. Otherwise, it will be difficult to preserve the mosque, despite all the maintenance works.

a myriad of attractions. Khasab, the capital of Musandam, is well-connected by land, sea and air routes, and serves as a perfect base for tourists who like boat cruises. Fjord Khor-as-Sham or Kumzar town can be cruised from here. Khasab is also the place to start your mountain safari up to the mighty Jabel Hareem. The Khasab Castle and Bukha Fort are other popular tourist spots here. The Khasab Castle is famous for its museum that displays handicrafts and other archeological collections. The Bukha Fort, also known as Bukha Castle, lies in the quiet fishing village of the same name. It has a, more or less, square ground plan with one round corner tower, two rectangular corner towers and one central rectangular tower. It was restored in 1990. The eastern port town of Dibba is renowned for its clean beaches and unique White Sea
