2019 is marked as the year of expansion for Biman, where at least four more aircraft will join our fleet soon. We are going to introduce two Boeing 737-800 aircraft in April 2019. Another two new Boeing 787 Dreamliner will join the fleet in July and September this year. With this induction of newer aircraft, Biman is also expanding its wings to a new horizon. We are about to go to new destinations in China, the Middle East and South Asia this year. We have also increased our flight frequency in all seven domestic destinations in Bangladesh.

Separated by a narrow but deep channel, shady palms trees and beach shelters make the two Sister Islands – Big Sister island (Subar Laut) and Little Sister island (Subar Darat) – popular with picnickers. The warm, blue waters are home to some of the richest reefs around. The waters are home to an amazing variety of fishes, crabs and other marine life. The islands are also home to some Longtailed macaques. They are wild and it is advisable to leave them undisturbed. Getting there: No ferry services are available. Apart from their famous chilli crab, Singaporeans have plenty of seafood tricks up their sleeve.
24
Prawns, squids and even stingrays are served on gorgeous platters, drenched in mouth-watering sauces. The most common method of cooking squid here is the dish Sotong where squid is wrapped in a banana leaf and then grilled over a fire. You can also find plenty of shellfish dishes being sold as street food in any of the local markets.
quarantine colony for leprosy cases and a penal settlement for political prisoners and ringleaders of secret societies, St. John’s island was transformed in 1975 into a tranquil getaway with swimming lagoons, beaches, picnic grounds, trekking routes and soccer fields. There are several bungalow chalets and also bunks that can accommodate up to 60 people. Be it a family outing or a camping trip, you are bound to have a comfortable place to stay on this island. It is also a lovely place for fishing enthusiasts. Getting there: The ferry service is the same as for Kusu, head to Marina South Pier and go from there.
Pulau Hantu
Literally translating to “ghost island” in Malay, Pulau Hantu is a place rich in sea life with more than 100 species of corals, as well as bamboo sharks, clown fishes, sea stars, seahorses and turtles. Legend has it that ancient Malay warriors once fought to death on the islands and their ghosts now linger there. However, there is nothing ghostly about it. Made up of two islets – Hantu Besar and Hantu Kecil – the island is managed by Sentosa Development Corporation. The island today is increasingly becoming popular with water enthusiasts. While diving is the top choice for visitors, you can also opt for overnight camping.

Katara Cultural Village is Qatar's largest and most multidimensional cultural project
Waqif combines colour with commerce. It sits on the original site of a Bedouin market from the 1750s with its stone and wooden shops still retaining their authenticity. Brimming with cafes, restaurants selling all types of cuisines, ice-cream vendors selling Turkish icecream while hollering theatrically, this bazaar is a must-visit if you want to indulge in some retail therapy. The spiral tower of Fanar smiles down upon the souk like a benevolent deity.

Beach, Parky Beach and the Second World War Cemetery. These attractions bear immense value for Bangladesh and are popular spring destinations. Another destination that can be added to the list of places to visit is the Chittagong Hill District (CHT) region for a week. Spring brings out the beauty of the CHT region and the district turns itself into a tranquil heaven for nature lovers; green hills and sprawling valleys are dotted with waterfalls and small lakes. Tourists can visit Rangamati – the lake city blushing with colourful exotic people that adds to the romance of this paradise. You can make a boat journey at Kaptai Lake and visit Shuvolong as well. You can shop for souvenirs and savour traditional food and tribal dancing too. While there, you should also visit Bandarban for some adventure. The irregular shape of the lake intrigued geologists and the lake was appropriately probed into, in 1973. Scientists at that time all but decreed the water of the lake to be too acidic for any form of life to survive.

or Bogakain Lake, located in the Ruma Upazilla of the picturesque hills of Bandarban, is a sweet water lake. According to folklore, Boga Lake was the result of a massive earthquake that hit a nearby region called Khumi, when the residents of that region killed and ate a deity. The said deity took on the form of a dragon and brought on the calamity. However, the lake, which is about 1246 ft deep according to popular geological belief, is nothing but a collection of years of abundant rain water from summers.

The location attracts many tourists the year round. The roads to the popular spot, however, are only accessible by jeeps or SUVs and trucks. Popularly tourists are known to spend a few days in Bandarban before partly taking a chander gari (jeep) and partly a river cruise carrying a maximum of 10 people to Boga Lake, at a nominal cost of 30tk. Trekking is another option but not many brave 22 km of steep and rocky tracks for six long hours, especially when it rains. It is difficult enough, braving the roller coaster rides of the chander gari, but the views are worth the ride. The jeeps follow a schedule of 8am, 12pm and 3pm every day. It is also advisable to take tribal guides who are not only lighter on the pockets but also

The Army concentration camps surrounding the area restrict swimmers from getting into the waters of the deep lake as the weeds may tangle in swimmers’ legs and cause accidents. The Bawm Tribe inhabiting the lake region is mostly all Christian and there is a charming church tourists can go to during the day. The lake itself is surrounded by several cottages, which can be rented out for a nominal charge. The accommodations are clean and the food is hygienic. Prior permission must be taken from the Army camps before visiting the area. Boga Lake is a refreshing and calm spot for visiting as a day or night excursion by itself, and also serves as a resting camp for travelers travelling further east to Keokradong. One way or the other, Boga Lake is an experience worth having, if only to tune out the city sounds and revel in nature. observes 48 years of its existence as an independent country on March 26 this year. For any country this is an occasion for rejoicing, but for the people of Bangladesh the celebration is laced with different thoughts and feelings. Anniversaries are occasions for remembrance and renewal. For the generations that have grown up after Bangladesh secured Independence, it is hard to remember the burden of the colonial yoke it shed. Bangladesh’s War of Liberation, began on 26 March 1971 and ended with the liberation of Bangladesh on 16 December 1971. The armed struggle was the culmination of a series of events, situations and issues contributing to the progressively deteriorating relations between East and West Pakistan. Questions of land reform, state language, inter-wing economic and administrative disparities, provincial autonomy, the defense of East Pakistan and many other consequential questions had been straining the relations between the two wings of Pakistan ever since independence of the country from Britain in 1947.

On this day, the national flag of Bangladesh will fly atop all government and private buildings while all streets and important city intersections will be decorated with national and multicoloured miniature flags and festoons.
MAR - APR 2019
The general elections of 1970 had made Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Chief of Awami League that bagged 167 seats out of 169, the sole spokesman of the people of East Pakistan and the majority leader in the Pakistan National Assembly. But the Pakistan civil and military ruling clique had refused to transfer power to the majority leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his party. Bangabandhu also refused to yield to the pressure put on him for undue accommodation. Sheikh Mujib's historic address on 7 March 1971 made this point quite clear to the Pakistani military junta. Then began the civil disobedience movement. It was the night of March 25, 1971. The roar of tanks broke the silence of the night. Millions of people in Bangladesh, then a province of Pakistan, woke up not to the chirping of birds but to the thudding sounds of bombs and bullets. That was the kickoff of one of the biggest genocides, led by the Pakistan army, in the world history. There were spontaneous uprisings

In the land of colours and celebrations-Bangladesh, Noboborsho or the New Year holds a special significance By: M un ira Fid a i

The
nation of Bangladesh is a place where different cultures and subcultures are celebrated and observed with much respect and fervour. From the season of spring, to harvest, to winter and summer, there is nothing we don’t enjoy! If there is something to celebrate, you can be sure the Bengalis are celebrating it. Pohela Boishakh or Noboborsho - a festival celebrated in different parts of Asia under different names like Baisakhi in Punjab, India, and Songkran in Thailand - essentially means the same: the advent of the new. In this land of colours and celebrations however, Noboborsho holds a special significance. Because it is the Bengali New Year, it is especially close to the hearts of the people of this land. On this day, Bengalis taste, wear and live their culture. Donning red and white, eating hilsha fish fry and roasted eggplant with soaked rice, and funfair hopping all day long are popular agendas for the day.

In Bangladesh, Mongol Shobhajatra is one of the biggest attractions of Pohela Boishakh. In Dhaka, the Mongol Shobhajatra is organised by the Fine Arts Institute at Dhaka University. The parade received the honour of being a cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2016.
mar - apr 2019
A conventional, yet welcoming way to start the morning is with the Mongol Shobhajatra. Clad in red and white traditional attire, men and women flock to Charukala, the famous University of Arts, to see and take part in the beautiful and colourful parade prepared by the students of fine arts. What’s amazing about it? Masses of people moving merrily, carrying huge, festive masks and handmade crafts. The event is one of the most happening sights all through the day but only early birds can catch it as they start as early as 7am and are all done in an hour or two. UNESCO has recognised this parade as cultural heritage, and it is worth your while to take part in it at least once. Go from there to Ramna Botomul Park for a morning full of folk music, skits, a healthy dose of the boishakh anthem “esho he boishakh” and a breakfast of “panta ilish” soaked rice with fried hilsha fish. The day of Boishakh is very hot due to the merciless April sun and is made more humid thanks to the crowd on the streets. However, cool off with cold glasses of raw mango juice or sugarcane juice from roadside stalls. You

Mash is an important part of the Bengali diet and no boishakhi meal is complete without an assortment of bhartas
will not be disappointed by the flavours. Do go puchka hopping on the same streets. It is hands-down the most popular street food in the country and you are sure to find a lot of puchka vendors as you walk along. A word of caution - Bengalis love all things spicy. If your spice tolerance is different, do let the vendors know before they fix your plate. Pretty much every free space is booked for some fun fair or another, complete with trinket stalls selling bangles, flowers and toys, and delicacies like laddoos and payesh. Children have fun on merry-go-rounds while young girls adorn their hands and faces with alta (red, washable skin paint). Lunches are usually reserved for family and delicacies include everything from spicy duck bhuna to beef and chicken, and a variety of fish. Mash is an important part of the Bengali diet and no boishakhi meal is complete without an assorted platter of bhartas. After a meal fit for royals, it is usually time for a short siesta. Pohela Boishakh evenings are a time for visits. Either friends will visit you or you will visit them. People usually carry sweet boxes to share for evening snacks and tea. Dinner too may be a heavy affair of the same sort so it is wise to go easy with the evening snacks. Young people nowadays make-do with ice cream cones and we agree with the choice! The day ends in the company of friends and family, as all festivals days should. While you now know what to do on Noboborsho, feel free to mix and match your attire in your creative style and let your inner child free. We wish you a day full of delicious puchka, belly dropping merry-go-round rides, a handful of red and white bangles and a heart full of love and laughter. Shubho Noboborsho!

and statues and other figures dating from 11th-century, excavated from former temples. One fascinating exhibit is the rifle used by Mohamed Thakurufaanu who ruled over the Maldives Islands (from 1573 to 1585 AD), in his fight against the Portuguese in the 16th century. Come here to enhance your historical and cultural knowledge of the Maldives. Next on your list should be the Grand Friday Mosque. The biggest mosque in the country, it was opened in 1984 and is built in white marble and free from any form of decoration. However, the highlight here is its golden dome, which has become a symbol for the city and dominates the skyline of Male.

Being surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the seafood on the islands is exceptional. Try garudhiya, the traditional dish of the Maldives, which is a fragrant fish soup cooked using fish, water and salt. It is served with lime, rice, chilli and onions. Next sample the masroshi – chapati, stuffed with smoked tuna and coconut, with some added flavour of curry leaves and spices, or try some of the many lobster dishes available here.

When in the Maldives, do not miss out on the some of the best diving sites in the world. If you do not have a license to dive, snorkelling is the alternative. With about 2,500 reefs, it is the ultimate destination for people who love underwater adventures. It is difficult to name one island for the best snorkelling experience; you will find a number of small private islands with enchanting luxury resorts that offer more than just comfortable accommodation. The Maldives is one of the few places on Earth where you can find a year-round population of whale sharks. While whale sharks are spectacular, many people rate snorkelling with manta rays as their best experience. The reef mantas in the Maldives are also huge, with a width of up to 4.5 m – the heaviest weighing more than a tonne. The Maldives is known for sightings of dolphins and whales too. It is said that

The fish market in Malé is a place where you can feel the pulse of the city by interacting with the locals and understanding their way of life. It’s a great place to watch fishermen pour in their day’s catch from the fishing harbour nearby. Look out for some truly massive tuna, octopus and grouper.
