Biman welcomes 2nd Dreamliner A M Mosaddique Ahmed Managing Director & CEO (Biman Bangladesh Airlines)

It

gives me immense pleasure to welcome you onboard Biman Bangladesh Airlines, your home in the sky.

It has been a busy year for us as we are adding five new aircraft to our fleet and increasing our seat capacity almost by 940 seats and around 38%. While our first Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is already connecting passengers from Dhaka to Doha and Kuwait, we are all set to welcome “Hangsa Balaka” our second Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in November 2018. After induction of the two Dreamliners, Biman will operate six weekly frequencies to London and four weekly frequencies on Dhaka-Dammam route. The third Dash-8 Q400 aircraft joined the Biman fleet in October 2018 paving the way to increased flight frequencies to all our seven domestic destinations. Biman will also add two more Boeing 737-800 on lease by December 2018.

After a nine-month-long war, the nation achieved its Independence in 1971. Independence from the dominance of the then West Pakistan under the great leadership of the Father of the Nation—Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is the supreme achievement of the Bengali nation. Our independence is our pride and the historic movement from ‘52 to ‘71 is our heritage. Bangabandhu, the greatest person of all times in Bengali history, delivered an iconic speech on March 7 in 1971, which has been declared as a part of UNESCO documented heritage. History says Bangladesh has been a centre of cultural diffusion since the nation became independent. There is a story in every page

This makes Bangladesh a land of religious harmony. People of all religions live here in great harmony and peace, which is the strength of our culture. The landscape of the country looks like a magical tapestry in green, woven intricately by nature, criss-crossed by a network of several major rivers and their numerous tributaries and canals. In fact, Bangladesh is the largest riverine delta in the world. The extensive river systems are fundamental to the country’s economy and people’s way of life. Sculptures, tapestries, engravings too are developing along side contemporary art; pantomime, puppet, theatre, caricature, acrobatics and circuses have their own novelties. Music in Bangladesh has developed through centuries along the three mainstreams—folk, modern and classical. Folk, tribal and classical are prominent forms of dance. Bangladesh has developed some special areas like Dhamrai, Comilla, Sonargaon, Rajshahi, which are famous for local arts and crafts. The government has also taken some institutional measures for developing and marketing different sorts of visual arts and crafts. Traditional dances, music and drama performances of Bangladesh are also of much interest to many tourists.

The mermaid of

Bangla Channel What better way to spread awareness about the importance to know swimming than to plunge into the Channel for a 16 km swim yourself By: Becky Horsbrugh

Whenever

I visit

Bangladesh, it takes the country less than an hour to captivate me. The first time I came, it was a riot to the senses and I was enthralled. People thronged around, autos, rickshaws and the humble motorcar all scurried around as the oppressive heat bore down. I was in Dhaka to help out with the SwimSafe swim teaching schemes run by the CIPRB (Centre for Injury and Prevention, Bangladesh). I spent a week at a place called Sreepur Village, north of the capital.

My first impression of the country was one of richness, colour, a young and vibrant history, and a people proud of their nation. I was intrigued and fascinated, most of all I wanted to do more to raise awareness of the dreadful statistic of drowning in Bangladesh every year. Then one day I came across a page on Facebook called ‘Swim Bangla Channel.’ It gave details of a 16 km sea swim from Teknaf to St Martin’s Island in the Bay of Bengal. At the three hour mark, I stopped for water and shouted to ask my crew how far away were we? They pointed ahead, and there for the first time I could see the island. It was far away in the distance but a great incentive. I kept going and although my shoulders began to ache, finally after 4 hours and 45 minutes, my feet touched land. I was back at St Martin’s and had achieved my aim. The ensuing media coverage of my swim in Bangladesh was just incredible. I was covered by most of the newspapers and on my return to Dhaka, I was interviewed by a number of television stations as well. I became known by the moniker ‘the Mermaid of the Bangla Channel’. I hope as time passes they will continue to spread information on this. If the young are taught to swim, they are more likely to get their siblings to swim and then more likely to teach their own children. before had the Bengali people so great an occasion as the decisive victory in a war against the marauding Pakistani occupation army on December 16, 1971. The history of this land and the subcontinent was rewritten with the culmination of a nine-month war in the triumph of a new nation. The liberation movement of the Bangladesh people that led to the War of Liberation began soon after the creation of Pakistan in 1947. Since inception, the Pakistani rulers began maligning the East Pakistan culture to destroy their independent cultural identity. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman showed the first sign of being a people’s leader in 1943 when he distributed rice to the famine-stricken people from his father’s stockpile. In the coming years, he grew up to be the leader he was meant to be, and steered his nation to their most glorious moment in history. He was—from that first sign of leadership till the day he died—as the people’s leader.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was later given the title as ‘Bangabandhu’ (Friend of Bengal) initiated the liberation movement by founding the East Pakistan Students League, just six months after the creation of Pakistan in 1947. He also acted as the architect and principal organiser in founding the Awami Muslim League, the first ever opposition political party in Pakistan, in the year 1949. Born on March 17, 1920, at Tungipara in Gopalgonj district of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the third child of Sheikh Lutfur Rahman and Saira Begum. He studied at the Islamia College in Calcutta and graduated from Dhaka University, Bangladesh. Mujib joined All India Muslim Students Federation in 1940 and in 1943, switched to Bengal Muslim League. While at Dhaka University, he founded the East Pakistan Muslim Students’ League. Mujib led students’ strikes and protests when the Pakistan authority tried to impose Urdu as the state language of Pakistan in 1948 and remained active to organise the movements which culminated on February 21, 1952. said earlier, did not witness much of a change. The military-civil bureaucracy conspired with the business oligarchy and the landed gentry to protect their vested interests. People’s emancipation did not figure seriously in the politician’s scheme of things. In 1963, Sheikh Mujib became the President of Awami Muslim League. He played the key role to scrap the word ‘Muslim’ to give his party a complete secular character. He proclaimed a 6-point charter of demand seeking autonomy of East Pakistan at the national conference of opposition political parties in Lahore in 1966. The Six Points program was called as the Magna Carta of the Bengalis. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman truly played out the role of Bangabandhu a grateful Bengali nation conferred on him once he was free of the Agartala conspiracy case in February 1969. After 1966, it was history that took its own course to fulfilment. With the “six-point” demand and mass uprising in 1969, Mujib turned into an invincible leader. The 1970 election, in which Awami League won a landslide victory, was a clear indication that the people of West and East Pakistan mandated Mujib to implement the “Six Point” program. The political establishment in West Pakistan did not accept the election results. This caused great unrest in East Pakistan which, under Mujib’s leadership, resorted to a “non-cooperation” movement against the Pakistani authority. Bangabandhu’s historic 7th March Speech deserves a special mention here. It was extempore, took just 19-minutes to deliver, but each word conveyed the strategic guidance for the final phase of the revolution and instilled patriotic feelings into the people. The speech was rated as one of the world’s best speeches. The famous address was included among a list of the documentary heritage of the world by UNESCO in 2017. Pakistan’s well-planned crackdown on the night of March 25, 1971 on unarmed civilians in the east wing marked the beginning of a genocide. On that night, Mujib had dispatched his aides to East Pakistan Radio with a handwritten message declaring independence. Mujib wrote the message

in English to draw international attention quickly. He had already conveyed his instructions to the people in Bangla during his public address on March 7. All this goes to show a visionary leader who had realised that he might be arrested and might not get the time to convey his last message to the people. Bangladesh’s people initiated the war of liberation suddenly as Pakistani forces went for mass killing. In course of time India got involved and it turned into a Bangladesh and India joint war against Pakistan. On December 16, Bangladesh got liberated.

The first government of Bangladesh was formed in exile on April 10, 1971, declaring Sheikh Mujib as the President in his absence. This speaks of the trust bestowed on a leader by his followers who believed in him and in his ability to deliver. His strategic guidance triggered the formation of the provincial government of Bangladesh to lead the country in his absence during the War of Liberation.

After 34 years, a verdict on the murders was given. The ability of Bangabandhu to unite a series of political conveniences with the popular appeal of secularism to demand a separate state for the Bengali people, has brought him the accolade ‘the father of the nation of Bangladesh’.

It was the first entry for a Qatari site on the international register and one of the 911 natural and cultural properties worldwide. For those who are not familiar with the matter, inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list is a unique opportunity for a country to build local and international awareness for the site and the values of the World Heritage Convention. Once a site has been put forward by the country, it goes through an evaluation process which often lasts several years.

As a result of the studies conducted at the site, a large number of archaeological finds from the 18th-19th centuries are now part of the National Museum of Qatar’s (NMoQ’s) permanent collection, and will be featured in the museum galleries. According to UNESCO, Al Zubarah had trading links across the Indian Ocean, Arabia and Western Asia. Sand blowing from the desert has protected the remains of the site’s palaces, mosques, streets, courtyard houses, fishermen’s huts, harbour and double defensive walls, a canal, walls and cemeteries. Excavation has only taken place over a small part of the site, offering an outstanding testimony to an urban trading and pearldiving tradition which sustained the region’s major coastal towns and led to the development of small independent states that flourished outside the control of the Ottoman, European and Persian empires and eventually led to the emergence of modernday Gulf states. What distinguished Al Zubarah from the other trading towns of the Gulf is that it lasted a comparatively short space of time, secondly that it was abandoned, thirdly that it has lain largely untouched since being covered by the

Al Zubara Fort was built in 1938 and used by the military until the 1980s. The layout of the fort has been preserved by the desert sands. The entire town is a vivid reflection of the development of an 18th and 19th-century trading society in the Gulf region and its interaction with its surrounding desert landscape.

desert sands, and fourthly that its wider context can still be read through the remains of small satellite settlements and the remains of possibly competing towns nearby along the coast. If you're in Doha, it is possible to get to the fort solely by public transport. There are buses from the Al Ghanim Bus Station three times a day. The journey takes about two hours each way. If you are planning on a day trip from Doha, the only option is to take the first departure from Doha and catch the last return bus at Zubarah back to the city. It will give you over four hours at the fort, which is more than enough time to observe the surroundings. An alternative for those wishing to spend more than a day around the Qatari countryside is to catch the evening bus at Zubarah onward to one of the nearby towns, such as the northernmost seaside village of Al Ruwais, where you can catch a later evening bus back to Doha.

presents a colourful and arty picture where cycle rickshaws and CNGrun autos become enmeshed in the coils of erratic traffic. What makes the scene interesting is that the cycle rickshaws, more than one million in number in the country, are bedizened all round with eye-popping and catchy art. Each rickshaw is vibrant, dynamic and decorated with colourful and dazzling tassels, tinsel, plastic, and artwork. Welcome to Bangladesh where rickshaw art forms strands of culture unique to the delta country. These three-wheeled, pedal-powered vehicles are a vital mode of transport in Bangladesh, providing lowcost mobility. They have collapsible, plastic baby-buggy hoods that act as a canopy to the passenger seat. These rickshaws can carry up to four people, or even cargoes of coconuts, groceries, jute, oil drums, etc.

cities and towns such as Chittagong, Comilla, Rajshahi and Khulna too, have followed suit with their own signature idioms. Nestling on the eastern-most edge of Bangladesh, the city of Chittagong prefers religious paintings as rickshaw art, while city of Comilla sports plain designs with elegant dark blue or green hoods. Enamel paintings on rickshaws use lively, bold, bright, and raw colours, such as fluorescent green and dark red with images ranging from the animal kingdom and nature to cinema. These days many rickshaws display high-tech advertisements. Tourists from abroad find these rickshaw arts a feast for the eyes, marvelling at the art as they meander along. Bangladesh’s rickshaw craftsmanship has also been tried in other countries employing rickshaw painters from here. Also, a number of rickshaw artists have received awards. To start your trip off on a good note, indulge your palate with a delicious breakfast. The famous Hong Kong Egg Tarts were said to be first introduced in Guǎngzhōu in the 1920s. Almost a fusion between Western and Chinese cultures, the egg tarts’ style and recipe haven’t changed in decades.

Head to Liwan district in West Guǎngzhōu and stroll through Qingping, one of China’s oldest outdoor, medicine markets. Traders tout remedies such as dried seahorses, deer tails, chrysanthemums, seaweed and ginseng (“good for bones”, “good for Guangzhou immune system”). Don’t miss Fengyuan was earlier known as Road behind the market, a district Canton in the West. It was established in 214 BC. It was also known as Panyu at one point.

After getting your fill of the traditional, make your way to Shamian Island, a quaint sandbar that was once a trading port and is now home to residential and commercial buildings. The island’s architecture is stunning; many of the buildings here are Gothic and Baroque in style. Bronze statues and well-manicured walking paths lead you through the island, making it a wonderfully picturesque place to spend a few hours in.

Evening

For a lively evening to end your day, head to Beijing Road for casual clothing. Art lovers should go to the parallel Wende Road, with shops selling Chinese paintings and calligraphy. If you’re more into local street markets, Shangxia Jiu Lu, also known as Up Down Nine Street, is the place to be, it is almost a mile long and has over 300 shops. Conclude your tour with a cruise on Guǎngzhōu’s Pearl river. The 90-minute boat ride will provide you with some of the best views of Guǎngzhōu city! The lit-up skyscrapers and a blaze of neon reflecting in the waters offer a magnificent sight.
