DREAM FROM A VISIONARY
18
There is no denial of the fact that technology has exploded in every sphere of human existence over the last few decades and is expanding aggressively. Clearly there is undisputed benefit from usage of technology but when this impinges on the fabric of our socioeconomic structure, time comes to take a pause, sit back and think seriously about what is going on. There is nothing more immediate and imposing than the effects of technology in the delivery of modern day healthcare. Ever since control of healthcare has slowly shifted from the hands of the professionals to those of the entrepreneurs, a gap has appeared in the trust between doctors and their patients, which was the hallmark of the relationship between the two for centuries. Time has come to evaluate if the priority should simply be a strong corporate culture or
just traditional doctor-patient relationship and try to establish a happy medium between the two. The Peerless Group, created in the heart of Bangladesh more than 80 years ago, has diversified in many areas, including in the field of healthcare and has kept trust, ethics and transparency at the centre of their activities all the while. The Peerless Hospital was established in 1993 and it has just completed 25 years of its glorious journey last year. Bengali-speaking people from both sides of the border have used the facilities provided by the hospital with love and tenderness, which has always been reciprocated by the hospital. Nearly 56,000 patients from Bangladesh visited us last year and we have opened up a separate counter exclusively to give them better service.
Dr. Sujit Kar Purkayastha MD(Cal), FRCP(London & Glasgow) Managing Director
The Peerless Hospital was a vision of late B K Roy at a time when healthcare was limited to public sector and the sector was struggling to cope with the increasing demand. The hospital was built in southern most part of Kolkata, which was sparsely populated at the time. But over the last three decades multiple new housing estates have sprung up and no less than eight new hospitals have been built in that area. Our hospital was the first multispecialty hospital in this part of the city, equipped with state of art facilities. We started joint replacement surgery, developed first neonatal intensive care unit, interventional radiology, complex endoscopic procedures, open heart surgery, gastrointestinal and pancreatic surgery etc. We have created the first modular operation theatre complex in Eastern India. Of late, we have started kidney transplantation and are getting ready to start other organ transplantation programme. Advanced laparoscopic procedures, including complex cancer surgery, are routinely carried out. The hospital also plans to start bariatric surgery within the next couple of months. Incidence of cancer in India is rising rapidly and there are plans to start a fully comprehensive cancer unit within the hospital premises. Early detection of cancer can change the outcome of treatment favourably. We have started screening programme for breast, cervical, prostate, lung and colon cancer with appropriate facilities. A new
digital mammogram with advanced breast imaging and expertise to perform stereotactic biopsy has been developed under leadership of a consultant breast radiologist in a one stop breast clinic. This hospital can justifiably be proud of its highly skilled and experienced medical workforce most of them been trained oversees in the UK and USA and have been associated with the organisation for many years. They feel that they are able to work here with full independence and in an unquestionably ethical environment. Peerless Hospital has realised early that just providing patient care cannot be the sole objective of any organisation destined for a long journey. It invested in academic, training and research of doctors, nurses and paramedics. Well trained and motivated workforce is key to providing good care to the patients and multiple academic courses are up and running here, including DNB (Diplomate of National Board) courses in General Medicine, General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Orthopaedic Surgery among others. Clinical audit is one of the most important tools to improve clinical effectiveness of any organisation and we
not only carry out audits but also publish them in peer reviewed journals. Patient safety is of paramount importance to us and we provide regular training to ensure that. The hospital has been accredited by NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers) for its quality. Bureau Veritus, an international body, has given us platinum certification for overall quality of services in the hospital pharmacy. It has the unique distinction of being given the prestigious award among all the multispecialty hospitals in the Eastern India. The Emergency Department of the hospital has been running a training course for advanced cardiac life support for many years recognised by the American Heart Association and takes pride of training many doctors not only from this hospital but also from many others within and outside the state. As part of its social commitment it has also trained many members of the public services like police, Navy and community dwellers with basic life support training. As mentioned at the outset, we all depend on technology in our everyday life but we are not always aware about the proper
use of the technology. In healthcare, use of technology can be very expensive and according to a study by Oxfam, application of expensive technology in healthcare is making over 60 million people poor every year in India alone. Even in the affluent West, lot of emphasis is being given to improve clinical skills and improve upon communication between doctors and patients so that overuse of technology can be minimised. There is no point in applying sophisticated and expensive technology unless we are able to give comfort to the ailing patients coming to us for help. As a highly responsible organisation, our primary aim is to engage with the patients who come from far and away and ensure that we make most relevant and appropriate use of technology so that we can give them maximum relief and transfer any financial benefit to them. We would like to be by the side of our patients who come here with a lot of hope and expectation. Our primary objective is and will always be to use our knowledge solely to serve the best interest of our patients so that we can be proud of our work ethics and ourselves.

Where there are mosques built in the 1400s, and royal mansions from the Mughal period, which still pull in large crowds, there are also newer buildings built during the time the French settled here. The mansions built by the French have a distinct Western look to them. There are several places to visit in

Old Dhaka, if spirituality, beauty and history are what you are looking for.
Lalbagh Fort
A 17th century Mughal fort, facing the Buriganga river, was started by Subahdar Muhammad Azam Shah, the son of Aurangzeb. His successor, Shaista Khan, however, abandoned the structure in an incomplete state, deeming it unlucky, when his daughter Pari Bibi passed away in it; it remains unfinished to this date. There are other myths surrounding the fort as well. There are passages below the fort leading to Fort Zinzira, another structure, not too far from this one. It was mentioned that soldiers that tried to escape the British army through this route never returned, and neither did the search parties sent after them. The passages are now sealed. The fort is worth a tour and many guided tours are available at the venue.

Stating a strong case for pluralism, Old Dhaka has structures like the national Hindu temple and the Shia Imambara in one area. Big structures, both religious congregational buildings show vibrance in their times of prayer and festivals. The green and blue tiled Imambara brims with worshippers during the holy month of Muharram and the Dhakeshwari temple pulls in crowds, from both Hindu and other religions, during Kali and Durga Pujas in the months of October and November.

flaky and airy biscuit made in kilns with flour. Eaten with tea, honey or cheese, these biscuits are found in a lot of places in Dhaka - but none as authentically made as in the bustling alleys of Old Dhaka. Kebabs, definitely a Mughal delicacy, are barbecued or fried meat cakes and a variety of these are found in Old Dhaka. Spicy, tangy and dry, kebabs complement biryani and are also eaten with naan or on their own. Wash it all down with a tall glass of cold lassi. This is a drink made of sweet yoghurt and milk and there is no lassi as famous as that found in Nazirabad.
Old Dhaka has a lot of food inspired by the Mughal dynasty
All in all, a day trip to Old Dhaka will give you a holistic experience of tastes, smells and sights to behold. It’s an excursion that gives one a taste of the true flavours of Bengal and its origins and leaves you feeling oddly royal and proud.

In the early 15th century, the Arakanese Kingdom, where Mrauk U was the capital, expanded its territories to the Chittagong area of Bengal. Best time to visit
The best time to visit Bandarban is between October to February. The climate is cool and dry. However, if one is not opposed to a little bit of inconvenience of the rain, the full beauty of Rangamati might really be in monsoon when the lush greenery of the city is rain washed, the waterfalls are fuller and the heart is lighter. So, are you ready for a treat in Bandarban?

In Pursuit of Success From the pen of an IAS officer comes Selfie for Success, focusses on real-life examples of celebrated people to tell the Burra Venkatesham, I.A.S. reader why one must never give up. Divided into five sections titled ‘settings of success’, ‘syllabus of success’, ‘summary of success’, ‘side effects of success’, and ‘signature of success’, the book gives real-life examples of celebrities like JK Rowling, Oprah Winfrey and others adding their life stories and how from rock bottom they rose to great heights. Speedboats
w¯úW‡evU
Speedboats, which are powered by an engine usually take you on a thrilling ride to some island. Each speedboat can carry about 20 passengers. If you have a big group, it is feasible to rent out one large boat entirely for yourselves. At these islands you will meet fishermen who sell fish like anchovies (shutki) or crabs at subsidized rates. You can also enjoy a steaming cup of tea at the fishermen’s huts before riding back.
Jet Ski
Jet skis are motorbikes that can ride on water squirting a high-powered jet of water behind it. A trained skier will take you out for a spin on the waves. This is an enjoyable ride similar to the speedboat but is more individualistic. Jet ski racing provides a high adrenaline experience but do it only if you are an expert at jet skiing.

of southern Thailand’s most popular island provinces, Krabi is famous for its scenic views, gorgeous islands and exquisite delicacies. Blessed with white sandy beaches, picture perfect islands and coral reef vistas, the region is most famous for coral diving. When we (me and few of my friends) planned to visit Krabi, we just thought it to be an adventurous trip, but we were surprised to see the number of options available to explore there. Being covered by stunning scenery, white beaches that stretch for miles, a jungle and over 200 islands just of the coast, Krabi covers quite a large area to explore. Be ready to travel a lot to see and experience the attractions.

You don’t have to book anything in advance, just walk through the little town to Railay Beach East. “When you make it to the top, the view of Railay makes it all worth,” said Tong Yong Kee, our guide who accompanied us on the trip. He was right. The view is worth the climb. Railay West and Pranang Cave beach are the two gorgeous beaches here, the latter being the busier of the two (mostly because it’s smaller so it seems more full).

You can just relax or get adventurous by renting a kayak and explore the waters. Ao Nang also has a few restaurants that serve traditional Thai dishes and mouthwatering local seafood. Krabi also has some night markets, so it is ideal for you to stay the night in Krabi Town and spend the day at Ao Nang. Visiting the islands is one of the best things to do while in Krabi! There are roughly 200 of them sitting just off the Krabi coastline, some are small rocks jutting out of the sea, some are quite larger but remain uninhabited and some are huge with many inhabitants. For example, Skull Island, Koh Talabeng, is known for dramatic, craggy cliffs and a mysterious scenery, Koh Gai is a typical tropical idyll, with powdery sands, clear blue waters, and vendors selling food and drinks, Koh Jum is the place to explore tiny fishing communities, mangroves and laid-back beaches. You can also include Koh Haa, Koh Poda, Koh Nok and Koh Hong. You can rent a boat from Krabi Town or Ao Nang and explore the islands. Alternatively, you can also rent a boat along with a guide.

Praise is in store for those working for a professional set-up. Better remunerations can be expected by those going in for a job switch. Discussing property matters with someone knowledgeable is okay, but take your own call.
Profits accrue for those who have ventured into something new. Someone from the opposite camp can tug at your heartstrings and usher in romance! Money or an expensive gift can be received from someone who adores you.
Keeping someone in good humour on the professional front will prove beneficial to your career. A difficult task at work can tie you up in knots, but perseverance will pay. Travel is likely.

Also called 'Norway of Arabia', Khasab has desert mountains that boast artistic patterns
like the 1000 Nights Camp that offers an interesting mix of the Boudouin tribe’s tentlike rooms with some basic city comforts thrown in are also available. The desert bit done, the newlyweds can now pack in a taste of the sea and the mountains. And sure enough, as the hour-long flight from Muscat starts descending towards Khasab in the northwest Omani exclave of Musandam, the views from the aircraft window promise myriad delights. Also called 'Norway of Arabia', it offers not just sparse desert mountains boasting artistic patterns on their tall, rocky surfaces but also a spectacular coastal route that shows up artistic vistas of fjords with tall cliff rising from the water surface. These vistas can best be savored through a day-long dhow cruise with some dolphin sightings packed in. Nothing more could warm the cockles of your heart than to see these beautiful creatures joyously racing along with your dhow, offering perfect photo-ops. Carry your costume as options for swimming and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters of the Strait of Hormuz are available. Khasab also houses Jebel Harim, the highest mountain that stands at a height of 2,087 metres. As you drive up, don’t forget to ask your 4D vehicle driver to take you towards the area that houses ancient fossils and rock engravings that have been etched with time on stone. Just watching them is like a journey back to thousands of years. Let your experience in Musandam be complete with a visit to the Khasab Fort built by the Portuguese that goes back to the 17th century. Later, as you relax in the sit-out of your hotel room enjoying the views of the fjord waters, raise a toast to a great journey ahead.
