The national flag carrier has entered into a new era with the induction of its first Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, “Aakashbeena” in its fleet in late August 2018. Another three 787-8s are scheduled to join the fleet – one in November 2018 and the remaining two in September 2019. In our continuous effort to expand the fleet, one Dash8-Q400 and two 737-800 will join the fleet in September 2018 and December 2018 respectively. With the expansion of our fleet we will be able to increase frequencies on some of our domestic and regional routes, offering you more choices. We will also start operating flights to Guangzhou, Colombo and Male from early next year. We are truly excited about the future.

Bihanga means... ...a bird in Bangla. It is often used in literary writings. As Biman Bangladesh Airlines is being reborn, reinvented and soaring to new heights, we felt this was the most symbolic name for Biman’s new in-flight magazine, and so will our customers.

West bengal
At its festive best Durga Puja in West Bengal is a not just a festival but is an immersive experience of the state’s art, culture and cuisine
10
A bhashan (immersion) procession in Kolkata is no less than a grand spectacle filled with music, dance and fireworks
T
here is a popular saying in West Bengal – “baro maash e tero parbon” – which literally translates to 13 festivals in 12 months. It is, therefore, not hard to imagine why the state is called a land of celebrations. And though all festivals are celebrated with great pomp and joy, none beats the fervour with which the state celebrates Durga Puja. For West Bengal, Durga Puja is not just a festival – it is a celebration of togetherness; of art, culture, food, friendship; and of homecoming. For a Bengali, it is more than just a devotional experience or welcoming home the Mother Goddess. It is an intrinsic emotional bonding with their land, their people and their commuSEP - OCT 2018
nity. In short, from religion to euphoria, West Bengal’s Durga Puja could well be considered one of the grandest festivals in the world. Durga Puja is celebrated in the month of Ashshin (September-October) and the magnitude of this festival can be seen and felt in the streets of Kolkata, the state capital: more than a million people throng the streets each day, pandal-hopping from one part of the city to another. Apart from the pandals and the idols (the main attractions), the state also becomes a makeshift canvas with art installations displayed in over 10,000 locations across the state. Cultural performances form an intrinsic part of the festivities: musical
shows, dance programmes and theatre. In the city and at several other locations in the state, puja committees even invite celebrities from the Bengali and Hindi film industries to make appearances.
The rituals
The main rituals of the festival are observed in the last five days, but for a Bengali, the celebrations begin on Mahalaya. On this day a prayer is chanted for the Mother Goddess, inviting her to descend on the Earth with her children. For a Bengali, nothing ushers in Mahalaya better than the sonorous (now recorded) voice of Birendra Kishore Bhadra on the radio, at the crack of dawn, reciting Sanskrit shlokas. Mahalaya is observed
seven days before the grand festivities begin and the tradition of listening to it is a tradition passed down through generations. It also marks the day when hundreds of artists in Kumortuli (Kolkata’s famous idol-making district) draw the eyes on the idols of the Goddess in a ritual called chokkhu daan.
The festivities
While the divine rituals form the essence of the festival, Durga Puja is also synonymous with grandiose pandals/pavilions and spectacular light works. Take, for example, the large-scale artwork that was made on Kolkata’s Lake Road in 2017 – 300 artists led by 15 leaders painted a 1.5km-long alpona (rangoli) in just 24 hours. A few years ago, members of a popular community pujo near Rashbehari Avenue in the city painted the outer walls of all the houses in the area as an extension of the main pandal. And these are just two of the hundreds of thoughtprovoking and spectacular works of art that are displayed all through the city and elsewhere in the state.
11
Significance of puja days
According to rituals, the Goddess’ visage is unveiled on Shashti (sixth day) and the ceremonial pran protishthan, which invokes the Goddess, is done on Saptami (seventh day). Ashtami (eighth day) marks the day when a young girl, kumari, is worshipped as the Goddess. Sondhi pujo, celebrated on the cusp of Ashtami and Nabami (ninth day) marks the Goddess’ victory over Mahishasura. This ritual is traditionally celebrated by lighting 108 earthen lamps (prodip). The festivities culminate on Dashami (10th day) when the Goddess is bid adieu. On this day, women apply vermilion powder to the Goddess and engage in sindur khela, where they smear each other with vermilion powder. People also perform the dhunuchi naach, a traditional dance performed with a clay pot filled with burning incense. The biggest highlight of the festival is, however, saved for the last day – the
(Clockwise from top) The entrances to pandals are also magnificent works of art; women apply alta (red dye) on their feet during the celebrations; sindur khela (red vermilion play) is one of the highlights of the last day of the festival; dhunuchi naach (a traditional dance performed with a pot filled with burning incense)
bhashan, or immersion. A spectacular parade of idols on Kolkata’s Red Road, started by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee in 2016, takes Maa Durga and her children to the Ganges where she is immersed (bishorjon). It is when people experience a rush of emotions; they are saddened to bid Maa Durga on a safe journey back to heaven, yet are consoled by the fact that she will return to them the next year. The numerous immersion processions on the streets of Kolkata are no less than an extravaganza – unfaltering
beat of the dhaks (traditional drum), joyous dancing on the streets and people chanting: “ashche bochor abar hobe” (it will happen again next year). To really experience a city, one has to feel its pulse and there is no better time to get to know Kolkata – in all its colours and magic – than during Durga Puja. ‘We need foreign investors’ In order to attract foreign investment, we have to make this country very safe and approachable for the investors, with one-stop services. Bangladesh’s reputed businessman Mr. SAK Ekramuzzaman, Managing Director of Rakeen Development Company (BD) Ltd. talks to Bihanga
SAK Ekramuzzaman, Managing Director, Rakeen Development Company (BD) Ltd., Managing Director, RAK Ceramics (BD) Ltd. Chairman, RAK Paints “Since the country’s independence, the garment industry has played a leading role in the economic development. After the Liberation War of 1971, traders of the country earned foreign currency through the export of garment and initiated the economic development of the country. The problem of severe unemployment also recovered significantly. The readymade garments industry and manpower exports has kept the pace of economic development of the country,” says SAK Ekramuzzaman. “The housing business in Bangladesh started to play a big role in the economic development of the country in the nineties. Lots of jobs were created due to the expansion of the housing business. Stakeholders, construction workers, engineers, architects, managers associated with the housing industry; these all factors combined, became an important sector of the country’s economic development,” he added. Responding to a question on how to approach development in this sector, Mr. Ekramuzzaman said, “In order to modernise the housing industry and to improve the cosmopolitan and other
facilities for buyers, this sector requires huge foreign investment. A world-class housing industry is not yet established in Bangladesh. Peace is a big issue here. But with the worldclass housing facility, I developed the Rakeen City. Rakeen Development Company BD has developed respectively 20,000 and 10,000 best in class Condominium Flats in the DhakaMymensing Road and Kachpur of Narayanganj. Besides, I have employed about 20,000 people in my housing industry, and I hope to grow further in the future.” With regard to the overall development of the country and the problems it is facing, Mr. Ekramuzzaman said, “The country needs skilled manpower. We are far behind than the developed countries. It is important to establish some government policy, technical academies and institutes for the same. Besides, private entrepreneurs also have to play a big role here. To say, foreign investment is mandatory in large projects for the development of the country. Bureaucratic complications are big problems in this case. We have to make this country safe and attractive to the investors with one-stop services. The businessmen want returns for their investment. For that, we need a nice environment. Tourism also has a major role in this field. Bangladesh has to do branding
by highlighting culture, civilisation, hospitality, security and the pleasure foreign tourists get visiting here. The tourism board will have to come forward for this job.” “On the other hand, India is our largest friendly neighbour. Our language, culture are almost the same, especially with the states of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and the neighbouring Seven Sisters. India has raised itself to the developed stage by implementing new technologies. In this case, we can take technological know-how from India. We still have a very large trade deficit with India. This can be settled by bringing Indian investment here within a planned framework. We can go forward by marketing our products to India and creating a win-win situation. We would love to do joint ventures with India.” “Recently, Bangladesh Bhavan was inaugurated at Shantiniketan in West Bengal, India, for the development and betterment of both countries. In the museum-cumresearch centre, Indian researchers and students will have access to a huge amount of data regarding Bangladesh. India as a big country – and like a big brother – can give us relax taxation on our products. At least make it legal and balanced.”

During
the medieval ages, castles were a sure-shot way of ensuring security and safety across the land. With their high, imposing walls, intimidating fortifications and (almost) certain death awaiting those who dared to lay siege to them, castles have earned a name for themselves in history as a symbol of strength and power. From Windsor Castle, which was originally built to defend London and is now one of the Queen of England’s stately homes, to the Krak des Chevaliers, the finest example of a Crusader Castle, there are many that have withstood the test of time and are now some of the most sought-after tourist spots for visitors from around the world. Castles rose to prominence in between the 9th and 11th centuries AD, and in keeping with that, the Nizwa Fort’s first foundations were set in the 12th century. It served as a prestigious administrative seat of authority to many imams and walis (governors) in the region. The fort was later expanded upon by Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Yarubi during the 1650s. The fort is a reminder of the town’s stability during Oman’s more turbulent periods; raiding parties would often attempt to plunder Nizwa’s riches when it was a strategic location on Oman’s vital trade routes. Bahla Fort, on the other hand, is Oman’s largest castle, which probably meant that the one in Nizwa was an outpost of whoever ruled in Bahla at the time. This dates back to the Nabahina Dynasty, which oversaw the Sultanate during the 11th century AD, and is now a world-famous UNESCO heritage site. In fact, it is one of the four UNESCO sites in Oman. restoration work undertaken by the government of Oman means it is now one of the country’s most loved monuments.
Getting there
Both Bahla and Nizwa are located in the Dahkiliyah Governorate, south of the capital Muscat. Nizwa, at one point, was an important centre of trade and commerce, learning, and religion in this part of the world, and is, therefore, often frequented by tourists and residents in the Sultanate.

Oman’s coastline stretches for a distance of 3,165 kilometers (1,967 miles), including beaches overlooking the Sea of Oman, the Arabian Sea and the Straits of Hormuz in the North.
After landing at the Muscat International Airport, rent-a-car services can be readily hired at the airport, alternatively taxis are also available. Visitors who are planning to come to Oman can also enquire with many of the other rent-a-car companies or guided tour agencies in Oman.
Bahla Fort is one of four historic fortresses situated at the foot of the Djebel Akhdar highlands in Oman.
Nizwa fort is best recognisable for its large domed tower, which at one point hosted 24 artillery cannons, the main source of firepower for the fort. That number has over the years, been reduced to about four since castles took on a more aesthetic purpose, but the crenellations which allowed for ease of arrow and cannon fire through this vast dome also provided the defenders of the tower with a 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside.
The Archaeological Sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn are an important group of necropolises from the 3rd millennium BC, located near a palm grove.

The castle aside, Nizwa Souk is a thriving, bustling bazaar that is famed for Omani handicrafts — crafted by local artisans. In addition, the local falaj system, Falaj Daris, which has irrigated the plantations surrounding the city since times immemorial, is also listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site, and is still functional. Bahla also has a large souk, famed for its frankincense resin – the best frankincense in the world is found and grown in Oman – silverware, such as khanjars (traditional daggers worn by the Omanis on ceremonial occasions),

Where to eat
Oman is home to a large number of expatriates from South Asia, and a number of establishments run by people from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have thrived in the Sultanate’s major cities. In addition, Western fare such as pasta and pizza is also easy to find.
Both the Castle and the Fort at Nizwa have been restored using traditional methods and materials.
For a taste of local culture, though, visitors would be welcome to try Arab food that is synonymous with Omani culture and hospitality, which can also be found in both Nizwa and Bahla.

I drive out of Bangkok, I’m struck by the utterly glorious Thailand sky. In the big glitzy city, living in a towering hotel or walking amid all the skyrises, you hardly get to see the sky, but now I can see a beautiful sunrise, slowly turning from a faint yellow to a burnished orange, turning the early morning inky sky into a brilliant blue. My destination lies only three hours away by road and I don’t know quite what to make of it.

the most of this by enjoying a lot of beach time, chilling at the hotel’s Beach Garden, taking lots of Instagram-worthy photographs of the beautiful scenery. The seascape of Hua Hin is made even prettier with the Hua Hin Hills in the backdrop. When I do step out, I am utterly charmed by the quaint railway station in the town. Built entirely in wood, this historical landmark was first opened during the reign of King Rama VI in 1911 and later renovated in 1926. It remains functional to-date, and the red and white painted building is definitely one of the most beautiful railway stations in Thailand, and among the loveliest I have seen anywhere in the world. King Rama VI loved to spend time in Hua Hin. He built the most beautiful structures in town, including the absolutely stunning Mrigadayavan Palace, built in 1924. This seaside palace

was supposed to be his summer palace, and he did spend three months here in 1924, but unfortunately he died just a year later in 1925. What he left behind, however, makes for a beautiful half-day excursion for modern day visitors. The seaside palace is built entirely in teak, painted golden and affords unforgettable views of the sea. Set in acres of green lawns dotted with majestic, tall, red silk cotton trees, the palace is not a typical Thai building – with arched, pillared, corridors and an open and airy plan, it reflects a more European sensibility. The reason being, the palace was meant to provide reprieve from oppressive summers and meant to be a breezy place that is easy on the eyes. Plus the architect who built it was Italian!

A little
known fact about Dubai is that it was once a fishing village! Today, it is home to the world’s highest building (the Burj Khalifa), the world’s tallest hotel (JW Marriott Marquis Dubai), the world’s largest artificial island (the Palm Jumeirah) and the world’s biggest mall (The Dubai Mall). Besides high-rolling luxuries, it also offers countless opportunities for action on land, sea and air.

Out of the 10 days that Durga’s victory over the defamed Mahishasura is celebrated, Kumari Puja falls towards the end of the 8th or the Maha Ashtami day. In some places however, the puja can also be held on the 9th day, Nabami.

a country with huge diversity, Bangladesh houses within her members of the Hindu faith among many other faiths. As such, Durga Puja is a famous and widely talked-about veneration in Bangladesh. Out of the many days Durga is worshipped, one veneration we choose to talk about here is Kumari Puja. The word “kumari” literally means a teenage female and as the name suggests, kumari puja is all about worshipping the teenage girl. While this is a tradition that is dying out in a number of countries, Dhaka has chosen to keep it very much alive.

Dhaka’s most prestigious Durga Puja is at the Dhakeswari National Temple. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina often visits this mondop during the puja days. Other famous Dhaka pujas include those at Dhaka University’s Jagannath Hall, Ramna Kali Temple etc.
SEP - OCT 2018
On this day, an unmarried teenage girl is worshipped as a goddess, symbolising Goddess Kali’s reincarnation as a young girl to defeat Kolasur. Other interpretations also suggest that Kumari Puja is a reminder to the world that the Goddess Durga is a mother who is present in females of all ages. What is noteworthy is that there is no discrimination in choosing a maiden for the purpose of veneration. Theoretically, any maiden may be chosen regardless of race, religion, caste, community or colour. The girl, who can be anywhere from the age group of 1 to 16, is called Sandhya, Saraswati, Tridhamurti, Kalika, Subhaga, Uma, Malini, Kuvjika, Kalasandarbha, Aparajita, Rudrani, Bhairavi, Mahalaksmi, Pithanayika, Ksetrajna and Annada or Amvika, respectively by age.

Anjali (flower offerings) are presented to this symbolic deity all day long, along with sweets and food.
It is customary to gift the girl with gold, silver, and clothes
Throughout the day, cultural programmes are held while the deity sits on the pedestal. These programmes are organised inside the puja marquee and include dances, religious recitations, etc. The cultural programmes are seen as meditation and a way to connect with the higher power. These programmes get a lot of foreign and non-Hindu attendance as well. Anjali and Mohaprasad (sweets) are distributed afterwards as symbolic blessings. The entire marquee is decorated with colourful cloth, lights and flowers and heavily perfumed with incense.

Almost tasting like rolled oats, beaten rice is soaked overnight to make it soft, and then sweetened milk is added. When the mixture is ready, mango is added to it, either finely chopped or grated. The flavour of mango is enhanced by the natural flavour of milk. Although rice and mango come together more famously in the Thai dish mango sticky rice, this Bangladeshi variant is nothing like the Thai dessert. Make it a healthy breakfast item or consume it as a chilled dessert after lunch and enjoy summers like a Bengali!
Bengali Bhel
Although the name does tend to remind one of mint chutney and sev, the bhel you get in the streets of Dhaka is nothing like Indian bhel. There is a firm, fried base of dough that is topped with a chickpeas gravy heavily thickened. It is then topped with grated, crunchy cucumber and lots of tamarind water for the extra tang. Finally, for spice lovers, a dash of red pepper and flavoured salt completes the process. Although the dough sphere is big, pros eat the whole thing in one go.

A Bengali meal follows a multi-course tradition; food is served course-wise, usually in a specific format. Generally a meal starts with shukto (a bitter preparation) followed by shak (leafy vegetables), pulses, a variety of vegetables, and fish. The meal ends with a sweet dish, mainly sandesh.

Morning
Start your day like New Yorkers with a crisp breakfast of bagel and cream cheese. Any corner bodega (Spanish for small stores selling a variety of items) will sell them, but your best bet is to find a place that makes them fresh throughout the day. The key is that they must be rolled by hand, boiled and then baked. Once done, take a subway train

No trip to NYC would be complete without a visit to Central Park. Go watch the ice skaters at the Wollman Rink this fall and skate a few rounds yourself. Few places worth visiting around the Central Park are the Gapstow Bridge, The Pond, The Mall and Bethesda Terrace. The park is the most visited urban park in the United States and also happens to be one of the most filmed locations in the world.

After lunch, head to the top of the Chrysler Building or the Empire State Building for breathtaking views of the city. Pay a visit to the new World Trade Center. Spend some time at the reflecting pools that are in the place where the towers once stood and have all the victims’ names engraved around the edges. If you’re in a cultural mood, check out Van Gogh’s masterpieces at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), enjoy some swinging sounds at Radio City Music Hall or the lush greens of the High Line Park that runs up the West Side. Once night’s fallen, make your way to Times Square and absorb the brilliant colours and lights at the “crossroads of the world”. The Times Square ranks itself as one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions in the world. Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant round the corner at The London NYC is the perfect place to end your day.
