Incredible self-love journeys of social media influencers
IN AND AROUND SELECT CITYWALK
A Shift in
Perspective
Select CITYWALK and the Shift Series came together for an inspiring evening as they brought three accomplished women to share their stories with an audience of 30 women Loving yourself as you are, being comfortable in your skin and making your voice heard even in a man’s world are all ways of finding yourself and knowing your true identity. Sending out this powerful message to women everywhere, Select CITYWALK and the ladies of the Shift Series came together for a panel discussion titled “Undiscover to Discover” at the shopping centre’s Good Earth store recently. Exploring the idea through two broad segments, namely ‘Women of Substance’ and ‘Breaking Stereotypes’, the event featured three eminent speakers, women from different backgrounds and walks of life, who shared their journeys and struggles with an awestruck audience comprising 30 women. Neharika Yadav, the first Indian woman superbiker who is also a UNESCO Youth Ambassador, was the first speaker at the do and narrated her story of overcoming all odds to be where she stands today. Paralysed after an accident, she worked hard and passionately to get back on her feet, and is now a biker extraordinaire! She shared with the audience how the

thrill of riding a bike is her favourite experience in the world. The second speaker was lawyer, blogger and writer Divya Gupta, who encouraged all women to speak up and say what they think and feel no matter who they may be speaking to. She stressed that every woman needs to be as comfortable and confident speaking to a man as she is to a woman, and feel truly free to express her opinions. The final speaker, NDTV fashion consultant Ambika Anand, spoke about the importance of family and how her loved ones have always been supportive of her every step at work. Talking about her workplace, she also revealed to the audience how it has many facilities for female employees. By the end of the evening, every woman in the audience went home with food for thought that she could share with her loved ones, doing her bit to bring about a shift in mindsets and proving that women are much more than the stereotypes used to define them.

‘Love Yourself,
Empower Yourself’ Says 23-year-old fashion activist Aishwarya Sharma, as she talks about her journey and tells us why loving yourself as you are is the most important key to happiness
When and how did you become an influencer? I started my fashion blog in 2017 with an aim to address social issues through the medium of fashion. I have always believed that fashion has a larger purpose to serve and it feels great to see young people come out and support this kind of an initiative. I had never imagined that people would understand the idea of fashion activism the way they did – it is really overwhelming.
8.
Tell us about your journey so far. As a young girl, I wanted nothing more than to help everyone around me. This combined with my love for fashion made me the fashion activist I am today. I feel that women, after years of suppression and silence, are finally finding their voices now and speaking out louder than ever before. I am glad that I am being able to speak for myself as well as for other girls who haven’t been able to do it for themselves yet. My journey with fashion activism is a continuous process and I am learning new things every day. The more I get involved with the underprivileged strata of society and make their issues a priority on my blog, I feel like I evolve as a person. Talking about acid attacks, mental health problems among the youth and social evils against women has led to changes in my own life too. I have become more empowered and more aware. What challenges have you faced along the way and how did you overcome them? Whenever you do something unconventional and talk about things
otherwise neglected by society, you face a lot of criticism. Fashion blogging is still a niche space and bloggers are expected to be like mannequins with no real opinions. This cycle needed to break and that was why I created my blog ‘Figuramoda’. I still face a lot of backlash on my campaigns and blogs, but that has never stopped me from saying what needs to be said. What are your thoughts on body positivity? I feel where there is no selflove, there is a void. How you look at yourself every morning is very important. You have to understand and appreciate your own value to really be happy, and you have to love yourself as you are - because you’re beautiful! Body positivity is all about acceptance and self-love. What would be your message to people who suffer from self-doubt? We all have our moments of self-doubt! What we need to know is that how we feel – about ourselves and about the world – is in our own hands. We can choose to be empowered, proud, loved and appreciated.

‘Learn From
Other People’ Says 34-year-old stay-at-home mom Dilpreet Kaur Dua, whose blogging was inspired by an urge to help people be aware of and battle breast cancer
Tell us about your journey so far. My mother was diagnosed with cancer when I was 16, so I had to grow up very fast to be able to manage everything in the house and deal with a parent in a lot of pain. I had to become independent overnight and that experience really changed my view of the world. Over time, it has made me more aware of what my body is trying to tell me and I always try and pass
on whatever I learn to other people too. What challenges have you faced along the way and how did you overcome them? Needless to say, breast cancer was my greatest challenge. I am blessed to have a family who took it upon themselves to look after me and all my needs for the entire duration of my treatment. I live with my in-laws and they raised my babies, my father knew how to guide us because of his experience with my mother and my husband did everything he could to make sure I smiled through it all. Two surgeries, 25 chemo therapy sessions, a month of radiation and a lot of bad movies – he was with me through them all! What are your thoughts on body positivity? During my surgery, both my breasts were removed and reconstructed using muscle grafting from my thigh. This left me with 7-inch scars and indentations on my thighs, and one of my breasts was not reconstructed properly. Despite all this, I step into the swimming pool in my twopiece every time. Every scar, every vein and every stretch mark on my body is a story, and an achievement all by itself. I am proud of them all. They remind me of where I’ve
been and where I want to be in life. That’s what makes them so powerful. What would be your message to people who suffer from self-doubt? Learn to love yourself no matter what flaws you think you have. Exercise, eat right and most importantly, sleep well. Learn from other people who have been through bitter experiences like you, and gain confidence from their journeys.

When and how did you become an influencer? I never actually planned to become an influencer. My best friend wanted the world to know my story – that’s where it all began. I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer after the birth of my daughter in 2015. I had already lost my mother to ovarian cancer while I had been pregnant, and this was a huge blow. It took a few days, but I ultimately decided to focus on what my body was telling me and what I needed to do next. I felt that it was important for young mothers like me to know that something like this can happen. It wasn’t about inspiring anyone, but just telling people that no matter what happens, you can learn, adjust your course and move on. I did it for my two kids – they were my strength.
City Story
‘Determination is
a Superpower’ Says 30-year-old brand consultant Moumita Sen, whose passion lies in sharing her thoughts and experiences with the world and proving how waist size can never measure capability When and how did you become an influencer? I started my journey as an influencer three years ago, with my focus on sharing my journey of self-love with as many people as possible so that they could understand the importance of loving themselves. I had been documenting my thoughts and experiences since I was a teenager, writing in my diary about being looked down upon for being overweight. Through the years, I grew to love my body and love who I am, and my husband has been an integral part of my journey. Tell us about your journey. Since I had begun my career as a teacher, becoming an influencer was completely new territory for me. And in terms of the regular standard of “beauty” going around at the time, I did not have an hourglass figure to flaunt or a chiseled face to doll up. I created my blog to capture the many layers that make up an individual like me, never aiming to influence anyone but just to share my thoughts. I lacked confidence, not knowing how people would react to a “plus size” girl’s opinions on lifestyle. I often felt like a fish out of water during the initial years, but slowly gained more confidence.
10.
I also learned how to multitask along the way. Today, I am happily managing my work as an influencer and as an entrepreneur with a beautiful family. What challenges have you faced along the way and how did you overcome them? As a mother to a toddler, a working woman and a member of a nuclear family, it has been challenging to remain consistent and persistent in my journey as an influencer. There are brand commitments to be met, parental duties to be taken care of and lots of work to handle at the same time. It can be a handful, but I’ve tried to do my best with countless sleepless nights! A huge amount of credit for whatever I have been able to do goes to my husband, who has supported me at every step of the way. Also, being a “plus size” influencer is difficult – people still tend to measure credibility by how slim you are. I was determined and thankfully found people who understood that listening to what I was saying was more important than focusing on what size I was. What are your thoughts on body positivity? Your self-esteem, confidence and identity depend on how much you love everything
about yourself, including your body. If you start doubting how beautiful you are, you will find 200 more people reinforcing that doubt. Nothing depends on the size of your waist. Be proud of what you have been given – carry those extra inches with elan! Show your critics how confident and happy you are as you are and believe me, all those pointing fingers will stop pointing soon enough. Body positivity is extremely important and is the core of your identity. What would be your message to people who suffer from self-doubt? Nothing is impossible when you love and respect yourself. Love and praise your body, mind and soul – all three together make who you are and no one has the power to make you feel anything less than perfect. Your capabilities cannot be measured by your waist size or skin colour. Your hard work and determination are your greatest superpowers.

‘Every Body is
Valuable’
Says 26-year-old entrepreneur Rahul Bhushan, who may have endured many hardships through his teenage years but today stands tall in his own element When and how did you become an influencer? I entered my teenage years as a boy many would refer to as “healthy” and a bout of typhoid left me with thinning, grey hair that prompted many of my peers to call me “uncle” just when I was 16 years old. I tried out many cosmetic products and would wear a cap. I was so horrified at the idea of relatives coming over, that I would lock myself in the restroom for hours just to avoid facing their bodyshaming remarks. Later, during the low phase of my life I used social media a lot and became quite expressive on Instagram. Started chronicling everything that I was exploring those days especially food and different cuisines. As my follower base increased, I started receiving invitations from popular hotels and restaurants for new launches and tasting sessions. What had begun as a means to overcome loneliness gradually became a wonderful source of collaboration with people and brands about things I love. Tell us about your journey. I was born in a middle class joint family in the interiors of Bihar and grew up aspiring to be a civil servant. By the time I graduated, my confidence was at such a low point that to take off my cap in the examination hall traumatized me. Shyness which grew out of embarrassment eventually
left me with no social life as gradually I realized it’s better to stay alone than to answer those difficult questions. Even though I had a lot to say, people only had comments about my physical appearance but never a listening ear. That was when I made friends with social media and it was through expressing myself there that I regained my confidence and self-esteem over time. People began to respond to me and follow my updates, and I developed a new sense of self-assurance. From being ashamed of myself, today I love and respect myself. I have discovered my strengths and have started focusing on the good things about myself. What challenges have you faced along the way and how did you overcome them? Overcoming the sense of abandonment was my greatest challenge – I felt shunned by my own family and friends just because of the way I looked, and it was a terrible feeling. I faced it by making small changes in my own perception, learning and by not getting affected by other’s behavior. I started exploring wider interests, keeping myself pepped up using activities I enjoyed engaging in. I devoted a lot of time to understanding what I liked and what I didn’t like, and
slowly, everything got better. It’s only when I accepted myself the way I am and started loving myself is when people started investing their time on me. Your thoughts on body positivity? People will love you only if you love yourself. Do whatever it takes to increase your confidence and love who you are. Body positivity is all about unlearning the idea that only certain bodies are worth acceptance and praise, and instead recognizing that all bodies are equally valuable. Living a body-positive life means embracing the principles of acceptance regardless of appearance. Any message to people who suffer from self-doubt? Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.

Love Your Baby Bump!
Flaunt that beautiful belly with these five hot tips for celebrating your new shape with pride and pizzazz Words: Cécile Reinaud, founder of Séraphine
Your body is amazing. There’s no two ways about it. Gone are the days when a baby bump was something to hide - your changing body deserves to be celebrated! That’s why, 17 years ago, I founded Seraphine with the aim of creating beautiful maternity clothes that women would love to wear, even if they weren’t pregnant. For women who are, these are my top five tips for feeling confident in those gorgeous curves.
18.
selectcitywalk.com
1
Don’t sacrifice your style
When your body is changing, it can be easy to lose sight of what suits you. However, there’s no need to compromise on your sense of style just because you’re pregnant! At Seraphine, our collection covers a wide range of styles for every occasion, all tailored to fit your changing shape. Take it from all the people we’ve dressed - from A-list celebs to royalty! Whether you’re looking for clothes that are classic chic, rock chic, edgy, feminine, boho and anything in between, you’re sure to find something here that helps you feel fantastic.
2 Invest in maternity basics early
Some women try to squeeze into their prepregnancy clothes for as long as possible, but in my experience, the sooner you invest in good maternity basics, the better you’ll feel. A comfortable pair of specialist maternity leggings is an absolute must-have, as well as some basic maternity tops and vests that you can accessorise using pieces from your regular wardrobe.

3
Do denim
Every woman knows the power of the perfect pair of jeans – when they fit right, it’s an instant confidence boost. At Seraphine, our denim is designed to grow with you through pregnancy, fitting and flattering your curves every step of the way. You can choose from a wide range of cuts and styles, opting for a pair that fits over or under the bump – whichever feels best for you.
5 Emphasize the empire waist
Once your bump begins to show, the empire waist – just below your bust – becomes your new slimmest point. Any style that draws attention here is guaranteed to flatter your figure. Why not try a stylish maternity wrap dress, or add a statement belt to draw the eye?
4
Try the midi trend
This season is all about the midi dress, which is great news for expecting mums as this trend is perfect for pregnancy. The modest midcalf length is flattering and ultra-feminine, and allows you to stay covered up while remaining completely on trend. We have some gorgeous midi options in the Seraphine range this season – find your favourite and flaunt your new curves!
Make the most of these nine months – they will go by so much quicker than you think!

It’s time to own your voluptuousness, ladies, by highlighting your curves instead of trying to hide them under layers that do nothing for them. Go for high-waist, belted silhouettes that accentuate your waist – belted dresses, jackets, wide-legged pants, culottes, high-waist flare skirts…there’s a whole range of options that would work wonders – take your pick! Gentlemen, whether you’re the lean machine or the squishy teddy bear, the right colours and prints can work wonders to show off what you have. If you want to flatter a lean frame, slim-fit solid colour basics work like a dream, as do clean geometric patterns. If your edges are on the softer side, steer away from statement belts and opt for darker shades in solid colours. Play with graphic prints and textures, but stay far, far away from horizontal stripes.

Want to create the illusion of curves, ladies? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Sweetheart necklines are the easiest way to begin – they’ll soften the lines of your upper body and let you look classy and fun at the same time. Side cut-out dresses also do the job well, giving you a pretty little hourglass with a whole lot of sass. You could get a similar effect with a cool colour block top that has side panels tapering in towards your tummy. Horizontal colour blocks work great too – choose something that uses a darker colour for your waist and a lighter colour for your chest, and you’re good to go.

Gentlemen, be not afraid of graphic prints on those pants you’ve been hesitating to buy. Cool, not-just-blue-black-andgrey trousers are very in this season, and if you’re aiming to accentuate your lower body, the more playful the pair, the better. If you have muscular legs, straight-cut or tapered lowers work best, but you can try out chinos too – they can be very flattering if worn right. shape of my heart With a wider forehead and an enviably narrow chin, these are faces that work best with softer tones. Go for soft, matte pinks on your cheeks, although a nice little pop of sultry red on your lips will never do you harm. Avoid contouring above or below the cheekbones they already prominent, and totally gorgeous, to begin with! Pencil liners work better than liquid liners for heart-shaped faces, and steer away from smokey eyes. Lighter shades of eyeshadow work great!

If you have a square face, you already have a jawline to die for. Make it stand out even more or give it softer edges with the right kind of contouring - use a darker foundation to contour the tip of your chin and under your cheekbones. For a softer look, steer away from angular eyebrows, sharply lined lips and loud lip colours. Light pink cream blush on your cheeks and pastel pink on your lips - maybe even a sheer, shimmery gloss - will delicately offset those gorgeous lines. Avoid eye-liner and use mascara to light up those lashes instead, and you’re good to go.

round and round
So your face makes a beautiful circle, a la Priyanka Chopra Jonas. To give it a more angular edge, highlight those cheekbones for some definition. You can blend a little bronzer under them and use some highlighter on top. Bronzer under the jawline can elongate your face a bit too. For your lips, use a sultry, deep red for that pop of luscious colour. Smokey eyes and sharp, angular eyebrows can be a finishing touch.

Long enough
Oval faces come with a wonderful elegance that needs no makeup to shine through. You can make it gently rounder and less elongated, if you like, using a delicate pink or bronze shade of blush horizontally across your cheeks, applying it in a gentle upward motion that moves towards the side of your head, and a medium to dark shade of eyeshadow. Lining your lips is another great idea for oval faces, highlighting the lines as well as the fullness of your lips. Avoid arched eyebrows and work with their natural line of growth instead.

Pompadour for the oval or round face The classic pompadour is a timeless hairstyle dating back to the 1700s. Your hair is combed upwards and backwards to make a bulge. Differently cut hair lengths at different angles create a unique look that can be styled in exciting ways with the right styling products.
Modern side-part for the rectangular face Visually reducing hair volume to avoid an elongated face works great for this shape. Parting your hair for a classy, chic look with a neat or messy fall, or combing it back from the side of your head that has denser hair volume does the trick perfectly.
Quiff for the square or heart-shaped face The perfect quiff is achieved by brushing your hair upwards and backwards from the forehead, with more length on the top of your head. Stylists at Geetanjali Salon ensure that the right products are used, so that your look stays intact and flawless through the day.
Messy fringe for the diamond-shaped face A textured or angular messy fringe complements the features on this face shape, as it balances out the wider proportions of your cheekbones with your forehead. Leave it to the salon’s experts to get this just right!
Curly top fringe for the triangular face A textured pompadour, fringe or quaff – either of the three would work well for this face shape. The key is to ensure a curly top, which is achieved by using thicker product to enhance volume. Balancing out a wider jaw with a narrow forehead, this is just the look for you!

Grilled to perfection The perfect stop for a tryst with the culinary secrets of Punjabi cuisine, Punjab Grill has carefully preserved recipes that have passed down generations Text: Vinayak Surya Swami
Millennials today look for a perfect experience; a half-baked evening of over indulgence is something most of them steer clear of. With that in mind, Karan and I arrived at Select CITYWALK with the perfect dinner on our minds, heading to Punjab Grill, one of the premier names under F&B giant Lite Bite Foods.
Bhatt i Da Murgh
We were courteously greeted by Rajinder, a member of the waiting staff, who led us to our table and offered us fresh hot towels. The first thing that strikes you about this restaurant is the upbeat, almost glamorous decor. Coupled with the traditional delicacies being served, Punjab Grill feels like the perfect modern-day recreation of an eatery from the late 70s. Our host for the evening offered to guide us through the extensive menu, to which we readily agreed, deciding to begin with a taste-profile inspired by the land of five rivers. As the hors d’oeuvres were wheeled in, we were immediately impressed with the presentation and the delicious aromas took our anticipation a notch higher. Karan’s non-vegetarian palate was in for a treat as he dug into the bhatti da murg, a traditional preparation of marinated chicken roasted in an Indian
Champ Tajdar
earthen oven, and the chaamp tajdar, lamb chops drenched in the flavours of cloves, black cardamom and kasuri methi before being grilled in the tandoor. The champ tajdar melts in your mouth, he told me, and is rich with the flavour of ghee. For my part, I thoroughly enjoyed paneer ke shole, a spicier and smokier alternative to paneer tikka which, when paired with the restaurant’s authentic mint chutney, was nothing short of a flavour explosion.
Murgh Makhani
Once we were ready for the entrée, an extensive course beginning with methi paneer masala and murg makhni along with house specials, besan aur hare pyaz di subzi and meat Punjab Grill came our way. The murg makhni was everything Karan could have hoped for, the chicken succulent and the gravy wholesome, paired with a crispy and fresh pudina paratha. The paneer was perfectly balanced with the spice and freshness of methi (fenugreek) and the richness of the gravy. I paired it with the wafer thin zafrani paronthi naan. Next up, we both immersed ourselves in the house specials as Devendra, the chef himself, graced our table. He explained that both the dishes were prepared keeping in mind homely flavours, and were balanced with just enough spicel To seal the evening on a high, the Punjab Grill team surprised us with a beautiful rass-malai served in an interesting cocktail glass. It was every bit as delicious as the dishes preceding it. The grand finale was a small shot of green paan, a concoction that our hosts were proud of. Even the tiniest sip gave us a burst of the flavours of an authentic paan. Punjab Grill checks all the boxes on a foodie’s list and then some, doing so with the effortless ease of a restaurant that brings its A-game out every day of the week.

Food
Eat, Weigh, Love If you’re a foodie who had to go on a diet, you’ve probably wondered more than once if there really is true happiness in the world. We’re here to tell you that you don’t have to be a slave to meal plans to stay healthy, or happy. How is that possible, you ask? Listen to your body, so that you can have your cake and manage your weight too!
50.
Never Stay Hungry
You might think you already know this, but hear us out: food really is life. It’s the fuel your body burns up for energy every day. If there’s not enough fuel, there won’t be enough energy and this is bad news for your body and your mind. What we don’t mean by this is that you should stuff yourself at every chance you get. What we do mean is that you need to keep feeding yourself at regular intervals, with an adequate amount of nutritious food. If you let yourself go hungry for too long, you’re multiplying your own chances of overeating. And all those diets that taught you carbs and calories are your enemies? They probably forgot to mention that they’re where most of your energy comes from. Consumed in moderation, they’re actually your best friends. Start listening to your body for signs of hunger – really notice how your tummy feels when you start and finish a meal, and you’ll figure out when you’re really hungry as well as just full enough to carry on with your day, recharged, instead of sinking into an ill-timed nap you might like to call a food coma.
51. Just be active, watch for your body’s signals for hunger and fullness and practiSe moderation – it’s literally all you need!
Food
Love What You Eat, Eat What You Love
Whether you eat three square meals a day, or a series of small meals throughout, one thing you have to let go of is foodie’s guilt. Remember that diet-binge-repentrepeat cycle you’ve struggled with before? It’s time to kiss it goodbye for good, because making your peace with food is the first big step you can take towards a new practice: intuitive eating. The logic is simple: the more you deny yourself forbidden fruit, the more likely you are to gorge on it as soon as you get the chance. And because you’ve classed it as “forbidden” in your mind, you’ll spend a lot of time regretting the binge, possibly fearing the weighing scale like it’s going to up and bite you the next time you go near it. Allow yourself to eat what you want, albeit in moderation, and you’ll find that those mad cravings that always lead to overeating, will overwhelm you less and less. The result? You eat what you love, and your weighing scale loves you too.
All You Need is Love
We’re all familiar with the depression stereotype that sits in front of the TV and feasts on ice cream to get over heartache. Movies will make that a caricature for you, but it’s actually true – a lot of people end up overeating to cover up a case of nerves or fill a void. Our advice: be conscious of what you’re doing, and don’t eat your feelings! Even if what’s bugging you is the fact that your weight isn’t going down as fast as you wanted it to. Remember: you have to be realistic and love yourself no matter what. Respect your body and its beautiful shape, and focus on being healthy rather than skinny. Trust us when we say this is way more rewarding than a size zero attained by denying yourself the food you love. Just be active, watch for your body’s signals for hunger and fullness and practise moderation – it’s literally all you need!
52.
Allow yourself to eat what you want, albeit in moderation, and you’ll find that those mad cravings that always lead to overeating, will overwhelm you less and less.
