Food Sprint

10 teams, 30 hungry #foodies, and a whole lot of food from 8 amazing #restaurants, the #FoodSprint at #SelectCITYWALK was an evening of foodie fun like never before! The participants tweeted, blogged and had to engage on social media platforms to move from one round to the next. Rocky and Mayur boosted participant morale and interacted with them during the event. Our partner brands were Mamagoto, Ala Turka, Krispy Kreme, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Pita Pit, Red mango, Haagen Dazs and Sattvik.

12

Sattvik turns 7 with Select CITYWALK As we turned 7, so did our favourite vegetarian restaurant Sattvik. A sumptuous 7 course menu by the restaurant was on offer as a part of special anniversary celebrations throughout the month of October. Some preparations that set Sattvik apart are delicacies made with lotus stem and dal with betel-nut leaves.

International Clown Festival Celebrating this occasion, Select CITYWALK and the World Clown Association held a oneof-its-kind international clown festival with Marti Flubber D’souza. There were stage shows by solo, two or three clowns, makeover sessions by the clowns on how to become a clown, impressive ‘Balloon Art’ and meet and greet with photo ops with them.

BODYCON BASICS Abbreviated for body-conscious, think bandage dresses, think super fitted, think Hérve Léger. Skin-tight pencil skirts, figure hugging dresses, form-fitted high waist denims; the bodycon is a trend to reckon with. If it’s a pair of tight high-waist denims, wear with a turtleneck top. The colour, especially if one is self conscious, should be from the dark palette for this silhouette. Whilst sporting this trend, always remember to select your pairings well. Team a bodycon dress with a denim or bomber jacket or a boyfriend blazer and make a chic statement. Accessorise well and keep the balance. If you’re trying separates, keep in mind to team a tight item with a breezy separate to create balance. For instance pair tight high-waist denims with a turtleneck top. SHEER SIMPLICITY A dash of sheer does look great and adds a touch of the femininity when added to layers. Sheer gowns are a great way to wear this trend for evening wear. A sheer hem, sleeves or shoulders looks great for day wear or everyday wear. Going over the top is a risk with sheer,so try it in small doses. The colour palette is largely pastel, creams and whites and classic black. Sheer cardigans, sheer shift dresses and sheer skirts are favourites.

BLACK IS THE NEW BLACK No matter what anyone says about orange, mauve or whathaveyou being the new black, nothing can beat the potency the colour black brings to an outfit. It’s here to stay. Whether you see it in nail polishes, moto-jackets, mini-trunk purses, cropped tees, shimmery gowns, warm knits or trench dresses, black is the new black. There is no opposing it and as they say, when in doubt, wear black.

/STYLE FILE UNDERCLOTHES

Y

our unmentionables have a huge role to play and are integral to good dressing. Choose the right bra, pick underclothes that compliment your figure, avoid panty lines (huge no-no), pick out the right thong and so on. Familiarise yourself with your wardrobe and your body type to begin with. Make a list of the underclothes you’ll need accordingly. Have a lot of fitted dresses and skirts? Invest in thongs to fit smoothly under them. Seamless panties are a must-have in the drawer. Seamless panties with lasercut edges stay flat and have less visibility. If you find thongs uncomfortable, try hip-huggers or hipster briefs made out of extra-plaint stretch fabric. These even made side pinches of fat disappear. A skin-coloured T-shirt bra is a much-needed undergarment. It lends a completely seamless look under fitted sweaters and snug tee-shirts. Shapewear to smoothen out unwanted bulges and bumps are imperative for those with heavy silhouettes. Get

Keep in mind The right kind of underclothes is as vital as what you’re wearing. They give the right feel and look to an outfit. What’s inside does reflect on the outside, pun not intended Hipster panties are worn low around the hips (hence the name) and are basically low rise panties in a boy short form. Great when worn with low pants, dresses, and skirts. If you aren’t used to wearing thongs, you can ease into the style by wearing some Brazilian style panties. Brazilian undies are a mix between a thong and a bikini.

Invest in thongs to fit smoothly under a fitted skirt or dress

shapewear that has gripper edges so that they don’t roll up. High waist briefs are also a great buy to say goodbye to tummy flab. These are a great alternative to shapers. It snips the midsection and hips without suffocating you. Great for waist-cinching dresses. Thigh huggers help those looking to slim down the thundering thighs. Ideal for sheath dresses, these also define the waist and tummy.

Thongs help diminish any VPL’s (visible panty lines) in jeans, tight pants, or dresses. They come in various styles including t-strings & g-strings, which are even less coverage. When purchasing undergarments make sure to buy the size you normally are, the effect should be a gentle sculpt not sausage-in-a-skin and too-tight control wear is just not comfortable. Don your rubber washing-up gloves when putting on sheer stockings so as not snag.

/STYLE FILE CANDID CAMERA

PICTURE PERFECT

There is nothing worse than having awkward pictures posted online for everyone to see. So this season here is my guide to looking picture perfect through it all!

Natasha C Kochhar, a former model, fashion stylist, teacher and image consultant with a degree from FIT, NY, has gone from teaching at the Elite School of Modelling to working with Channel V to styling celebrities - and loved every minute of it! She is currently head of fashion and brand evaluation at Select CITYWALK.

TIP#1 KNOW YOUR ANGLE

Facing the camera straight on is rarely flattering; instead, turn your head to a three-quarter position to give your features depth or better yet take a look at your favourite pictures of yourself and try to spot a pattern. Do you look better facing the camera straight or at an angle? If you prefer an angle then note whether it’s the right side you prefer or the left then try to replicate it in your next photo. To avoid a double chin, elongate your neck and push your face forward a bit and keep your chin slightly down. It might feel awkward, but it will look great — promise.

TIP#2 MAKE SURE YOUR MAKE UP IS THE PERFECT MATCH

Many girls have the tendency to wear foundation that is too pale for their skin tone. This becomes even more obvious when a flash hits the skin. My advice would be to match the skin tone of your face to your chest and add a thin layer of foundation to your neck to make sure its all the same colour!

20

TIP#3 CURLED LASHES AND MASCARA ARE A MUST

Think the Kardashian sisters! Both curled lashes and mascara open up your eyes, which are the focal point of a picture. You want to draw people into a picture by maximizing the impact of the eyes. The more open they are, the more the light hits them and that’s what makes them twinkle!

TIP#4 PRACTICE YOUR SMILE

A fake smile just looks fake!! Find your natural smile. Or maybe crack a joke just before a picture is taken, laughing shots can be candid and fun, don’t force it. Try and be natural, if you’re cheeks start to hurt, it’s probably too much!

TIP#5 FIX YOUR HAIR

A photo can highlight flyaways, so make sure your style is sleek. When your hair is tied, your baby hair can sometimes get out of control. I’ve discovered that transparent mascara is the perfect gel to control that.

November-December 2014 selectcitywalk.com

Hair spray is also another option. If you are afraid to use too much I suggest you spray some on your hands and then lightly try to control frizz. Besides the flyaways whether your hair is straight or curled just make sure it is in order.

TIP#6 TRY THE RED CARPET POSE

If ‘natural’ is not the look you are going for; put your hand on your hip, angle your body to the side and turn your head towards the camera. It’s a cliché, but it really does work to help you look slimmer. Another tip involves crossing the legs, its a great way of giving your body a mermaid shape. For inspiration google red carpet pictures of Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton and Rihanna and replicate their perfect angles.

TIP#7 GET THE LIGHTING RIGHT

When you’re taking a selfie or any photo for that matter, good lighting is absolutely essential! You can’t show off your makeup, hair or new outfit in bad lighting because it’s distracting and unflattering! So avoid standing directly under a light, which can cast weird shadows on your face. Instead, stand facing a natural light source, such as a window, or in a spot where soft light hits your face from the side.

TIP#8 PREP YOUR PEARLY WHITES

Another secret to beautiful photos lies within having a flawless smile. If your smile is sparkling, happiness and beauty will radiate throughout your whole appearance. If you have the time to get your teeth professionally whitened before the festivities begin that would be ideal however home remedies such as baking soda have been known to do the trick as well.

TIP#9 HOLD YOUR POSE

It takes practice, but it is possible to take clear, nonwobbly pics. Staying still is an obvious but challenging tip to execute when you take your photos. This is especially important when you’re taking a selfie. And even when you are being professionally clicked it is equally important to relax, stay still and hold that pose!

TIP#10 PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

A lot of the process involves trial and error, so keep at it and pretty soon you will master the delicate balance of art and science in capturing the perfect picture!

DROP DEAD GORGEOUS... Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy - but mysterious. However, above all black spells out loud: “I don’t bother you - don’t bother me.” And yet again it emerges as fashion’s favoured. For the festive season, black is your go-to colour. It isn’t without reason when in doubt, wear black - is a popular adage. Take it away, black. The floor’s yours! styled by NATASHA C KOCHHAR photographer KARISHMA BEDI

S

himmers for your body can give you an instant glam- up but overuse can make you appear too harsh or gaudy. Colours like golden and bronze look awesome on tanned or dark skin and people with fair skin can go for silver and pink coloured shimmer. It can be applied on the neck, cleavage, back, face, hair, and legs but don’t apply it in a single go, give multiple layers to it. In this way, it would make your make up look thick and long lasting. You can highlight any part of your body through shimmer. Be it cleavage, arms, legs or collarbone, a little bit of shimmer can look great. However, there are a few ways in which you can put this powder on your face to complete your evening party look. Now, shimmering rouge and frosty eye shadows are available in the

market, but if you don’t have them, then it’s completely fine to use shimmer powder for highlighting temple and forehead, nose, chin and apples of your chin. If you have a dark and tan tone, then a bronze or golden shimmer will go very well. For fair-skinned, silver body shimmer is very good, especially if you’re wearing a silver dress. Warm pink shimmers are for all skin tones. So, choose shimmer powder accordingly. Always apply shimmer powder before wearing the dress. The loose shining powder may sprinkle over clothes. You can sweep the powder in the middle of your cleavage, collar bones, arms and legs. Make sure your skin has no residue of moisturizer or cream otherwise it will be a messy affair. Glitz & glam If you have a dark and tan tone, then a bronze or golden shimmer will go very well.

COCKTAIL CURE

From the metallic shadows to the bold berry pouts - a rocking night in town calls for an array of glitter and glam. If the winter has you looking paler than usual, use a bronzer or gradual tanner on your face to brighten up your look at night. The classic cat eye with dark lips and tips are still evergreen. “Berry is a versatile colour and all shades in the Berry family suit the Indian skin tone very well. Incorporating it for the lips and nails is a great idea for this party season,”asserts Mickey Contractor, director, makeup artistry, MAC India. This year you could also choose a monochromatic look for your lips and cheeks while going bold with your eyes. “The Eyes are the focus this fall. The exaggerated winged eyeliner has been shelved to give space to well defined shapes; be it the dramatic boxy eyeliner or the half way liner that defines, enhances and extends the length of the eye but it still subtle. This fall is also about infusing colour. A classic liner can be made striking by using unusual shades,” says Mickey Contractor.

HOLIDAY HUES

Christmas and New Year is when you will either be hosting holiday parties or would be attending one. A fresh hairstyle and a new dress can work wonders but considering the amount of face time you will be spending with people, your makeup will pull your entire look together. From red lips to bold brows to cat eyes that make everyone envious, there’s a holiday look for you to impress long lost friends and make a lasting impression on new faces. First and foremost it is important to carry makeup which is portable. Also remember to prep up your skin with a cleanser and lotion for your makeup to last the entire party. For a daytime look you could go for funky eye shadows and for the night you could add just a hint of shimmer to your eyes with metallic dust and a thin eyeliner which could extended into the cat eye look or smudged to give a smokey one. Finish with a lip tint and head for the party.

DO IT BY THE DAY

Makeup trends come and go but flawless, polished skin never goes out of style. The natural matte look is perfect for day wear, says Bobbi Brown. For a daytime look what works best is a fresh face with minimal mascara, soft brown eye shadow and a creamy rose lipstick. Glamorous glitter, smokey eyes and dark eye shadows are a complete no no for a daytime look. Skipping heavy makeup is just the right thing to do this fall. Instead just dab on some concealer to hide any red spots and make your eyes look brighter by putting a touch of shimmery white shadow at the inner corners. If you want to add a pop of colour to your look then you could add a hint of matt red lips - it will instantly glam up your day wear look.

For the festive season add shine to the cheeks with this quick blush in mocha tone, Clinique, `2,500

There is a reason why we like strings of light at our houses during festival time. The festive feel makes everything look beautiful and glowing. The same is true for highlighting makeup. To get your own shimmer, sweep a glittering powder over your cheekbones, below your brow bone and on the inner corner of your eyes. If your skin is light, reach for a pink-based highlighter, while medium- to darkskinned women should try golden tones. Black liner swept across the top lid makes a bold yet elegant statement that needs very little else. Its time to swap your pencil for a liquid or gel liner. Chocolate not only is the yummiest treat of the season but also a sweet alternative to red lipstick. Skip the matte browns and reach for those with mauve or reddish undertones. Basic gray shadow infused with flecks of gold, purple, and green is a whole new way to make up your eyes. A colour that’s this multi- textured will work better for you when the occasion is festive.

Blowouts of this party season call for movement and volume at the crown

TREND

SENSUAL BLOWOUTS

Abandon the usual blowouts of the past where your hair fell flat like a curtain. Blowouts of this party season call for movement and volume on the crown. Start by using a round brush to blow-dry wet hair. Keep all the volume at the top and iron out just the ends of your tresses. Make sure your hair is devoid of all oil and if needed, use a dry shampoo to absorb all excess oil and pile on the volume.

This elegant hairstyle is perfect for sit-down dinners and froufrou dos. To achieve this look in less than 5, part your hair at the centre all the way down. Pick the side you want your chignon to rest on and get all your hair to that side. Make two ponytails out of your hair, hold them in your hands and make a knot. Wrap both sides of the knot around each other and secure with pins. Complete the look with a medium hold hairspray.

Run a dab of curl-enhancing mousse through damp hair and then dry your curls out with a diffuser to form striking ringlets. Use your fingers to style your hair and some hairspray to keep your ringlets bouncy all through the night. Don’t tuck in those curls, let them come out and play.

A glamorous yet done-within-minutes hairstyle is the partyperfect pouf. If your party memo says bold and flirty, the pouf has to be your look. High on volume, big bodied and cascading waves are right on the ball. Start off by taking the crown section of your hair that’s been dried and back comb it. Create a pouf, deciding how high you want it and pin your hair. Curl the rest of it with a curling iron making large and loose waves. Spray with a lock-in hairspray to keep in place.

A stunning and extremely eye-catching trend to latch on to during this year’s party fest is the block heel. Chunky, comfortable (especially for the long after-hours parties) and chic, block heels are a must-have. In a variety of designs, shades and patterns possible, this style is a blessing in gorgeous disguise for your feet. Block heels are being touted on catwalks in reptile skin prints, embellished with studs or in classy suede. Wear your block heels with knee-high thin socks or stockings for a little quirk. Leave the stiletto route this party season and get on to the block heel wagon.

FABULOUS FLATS

You have a party to go to almost every day and your feet are simply giving up what with the 6 inches of killer heels you’re wearing all night long. Switch to fabulous party flats because apart from good looks, comfort is terribly important. Designers world over have given the nod to flats as a noteworthy alternative for party footwear. Dolce & Gabbana sent interesting vintage flats with T-straps down their runway. Colourful bling-y loafers are another option one has to boogie the night away comfortably. Metallic brogues, ankle strap flat pumps or ballerinas are a sure winner. You don’t need heels to look fabulous anymore. Multi gilded gold flats, Steve Madden

Your short boots will never fail you, so don’t hang ‘em up just yet. A must-have for shoe zealots, boots have emerged as the favoured go-to footwear for this party season. The stylish repertoire of boots ranges from thigh-high, over-the-knee, moto, ankle strap, mid-calf, wedge booties and shin-guard boots in colours like fawn, beige, tan and black and prints like never before. Textures like snakeskin, soft leather, slouchy suede, embellished with crystals, metallic studs and even polka dots are amping up the chic quotient on this trend. Take your pick because these boots are not going anywhere anytime soon.

LIVE LIFE, BURGER KING SIZE There’s something here for everyone who walks in. A special creation for veggie lovers aptly called the Veg Whopper makes its foray into India for the first time. A crisp patty made with vegetables and served in a 5’ freshly toasted sesame bun. Sounds like heaven already! Add to this - tangy pickles, fresh tomatoes, onions, lettuce laced with mayonnaise and ketchup to boot, this burger will turn a veggie non-lover also into a veggie lover. A tip here, hold it with both your hands. Burger King recommends a combo of large fries and a fountain drink with this king-sized Whopper. Of course, for cheese lovers, top your burger with cheese for that extra yummy-ness. Feeling a little left out, non-veg lovers? Don’t. A bit of the Chicken Whopper will have you addicted for life. Flavour filled, flame-grilled, juicy chicken patty served in a bed of tasty pickles, lettuce, tomatoes and onions topped with mayonnaise and ketchup; this is truly a whopper of whoppers. Again, don’t forget to use both hands. There’s a Mutton Whopper too that combines a juicy and peppery flame-grilled mutton patty with a freshly toasted sesame bun and toppings. Burger King recommends ‘Go Double’ for that much more fun.

SHAPEWEAR TO THE RESCUE

Over-ate during the festive season? Fret not, shapewear comes to the rescue to help you tide over all those bumps and lumps. Read on to know more about body shapewear and how to make it work for you. words

| Shruti Tomar

I

t’s imperative for every woman to have a couple of shapewear items in her closet for those days when the flab is a hindrance or just to look stunning in a figure hugging outfit. Abandon all those worries about looking podgy and rotund because these tuckers make all that fat disappear in no time. The right body shapewear lends curves at the correct places in addition to highlighting those parts that need help. Think of shapewear as your box of cheat-wear! Shapewear comes in different kinds for different parts and types of body. So when you are shopping for it, go armed with the knowledge of what you want it to do for you. If you don’t have an answer to that, doesn’t matter. Shapewear can be used under most clothes and are a great investment.

PANTY GIRDLES This style of shapewear comes in a variety of styles and is perfect for tucking in all that extra happiness around the tummy, butt, thighs and hips. An instant tummy-tucker, this item of clothing has come a long way from its days of being an uncomfortable

obstruction around the midriff. The styles available vary from high waist long leg girdles to waist control girdles to regular panty girdles. It’s important to know what you want to aim at. Get the right size or it doesn’t serve the purpose. Get your measurements right by trying it out. A tighter pair does not mean it can contain more flab. They’re created to fit snugly and any tighter than needed can make it painful and create more flab at the edges. If you get a size bigger, it doesn’t help in controlling the fat.

SHAPEWEAR SLIPS Wearing that body-hugging bandage dress or a fitted top, opt for a shapewear slip to smoothen you out. There are two kinds to choose from here. The half-slip skirt if you’re simply looking for something to work on the thighs and hips. The full body shaper dress is the second kind that is a strapless body shaper to be worn under a strapless dress. Tips to keep in mind when shopping here are the dress neckline, ability to move your legs and try on to see bust requirements. Shapewear for full figures – Shapewear is an essential item for those who wear plus sizes. It minimizes all those problem areas and helps you look fabulous in anything you wear.

RETRAIN YOUR TUMMY THE RIGHT WAY Retrain your tummy the right way to get rid of the tummy fat in no time. Lie on your back on a mat with legs lifted over the hips and arms above your head. Crunch up. Try to get your hands to touch your feet. Keep your legs straight and bring your arms back over your head and lower your upper back and left leg down. Crunch up lifting left leg over hips and extending hands to touch toes. Switch legs. Repeat. Stand on your left leg, left arm stretched out at shoulder level. Lift right foot some inches off the floor and move to the side. Keep right hand behind head, elbow bent outwards to the side at shoulder level and lift right knee towards elbow. Switch sides. Repeat. Stand up with feet put together. Lunge back

with left leg, bend knees to 90 degrees, and reach left hand to right foot. Stand up, lift left knee in front of you to hip level, and bring fists to chest, bending elbows out to sides as you twist left. Twist to centre, lunge left leg back. Switch sides. Repeat. The V crunch is different kind of crunch. Sit on a chair, back straight and arms at side. Lean upper body to 45 degrees as though one side of a V. When in that position, tighten ab muscles and lift your legs to make second side of the V. Try to keep legs straight and continue to bring your legs up. Lastly, the floor leg lifts. Lie on your back, arms on sides and lift your legs up 6 – 10 inches above the floor. Contract your ab muscles. Hold in this position for as long as you can and lower legs to the floor. Repeat.

/WANDERLUST NEW YEAR EVE DESTINATIONS

WHACKY, WEIRD, WILD, 2015

If you like the typical out of the box stuff and fancy something just a little bit different then some Google research can unlock many exciting New Year’s Eve celebrations at slightly less traditional destinations. Here are just eight fabulous alternative spots to ring in the New Year POLAR BEAR PLUNGE, USA, CANADA

I

n New York City, it’s only about an hour on the Q train from the crush of New Year’s Eve parties at Times Square to Coney Island, where hundreds of people rush into the Atlantic Ocean on Jan 1. All across the globe, folks fortified with courage (liquid or otherwise) will splash into lakes and oceans to start 2015 off with a shiver. A polar bear plunge is an event held during the winter where participants enter a body of water despite the low temperature. In the United States and Canada polar bear plunges are usually

64

held to raise money for a charitable organization. However, some Canadians have been known to make the plunge in celebration of a new year. In Canada “Polar Bear Swims”, “Plunges”, or “Dips”, is a New Year’s Day tradition in numerous communities across the country. Vancouver, BC’s annual Polar Bear Swim Club has been active since 1920 and typically has 1,000 to 2,000 registered participants, with a record 2,128 registrants plunging into English Bay in 2000.

RED SHOE DROP IN FLORIDA, USA

T

he island starts to tilt a bit with the amount of people who gather in front of the Bourbon St. Pub & the New Orleans House on Duval Street to ring in the new year as the world famous drag queen Sushi is lowered in a huge red high heel shoe from the top of the New Orleans House to the ground at the stroke of midnight. New Year’s Eve revellers can expect to combine “bubbly” with “balmy” in the Florida Keys, raising champagne toasts at celebrations along the island chain as subtropical breezes rustle the palm fronds. While New York City is famed for

its Times Square “ball drop,” Key West is to stage four widely differing takeoffs on that New Year’s Eve tradition as midnight will approach Dec 31, 14. The arrival of 2015 is to be heralded on the island’s Duval Street with the “drop” of a gigantic man made conch shell, the symbol of the Florida Keys, to the flat roof of Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval. Thousands of spectators gather on Duval for the annual gala, emceed by a rooftop host starting at 10 pm. and featuring dancing in the street and a countdown to midnight recorded on a huge clock. At midnight, the shell descends and cheers erupt.

Festivities kick off on 30 December with revellers carrying torches from Parliament Square to Calton Hill, where fireworks set the sky ablaze. On New Year’s Eve, join over 50,000 people who will take to the streets to sing Auld Lang Syne (the biggest and loudest rendition in the world) and to party. Celebrations continue on New Year’s Day with games such as ‘scotch hoppers’ and ‘dreadnought’, created by local artists, in the Old Town.

JUNKANOO IN NASSAU, BAHAMAS

L

ong before the spectacular ‘rush-out’ of New Year’s eve, the exuberant Junkanoo dance troupes - groups of up to 1,000 - will have been busy rehearsing their dazzling routines. The musicians will have perfected the hypnotic rhythms they’ll perform day and night on a cacophony of goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles and horns, and the imaginative costume designers will have worked non-stop to weave their own special magic with beautifully coloured crepe paper and cardboard. As the Junkanoo parade moves through the

streets of downtown Nassau, the energy of the dancers and the beat of the music motivates the vast crowds of supporters and spectators to start moving in their seats, or on their feet, or in the trees, or on balconies - wherever they have found a spot from which to watch this soul-stirring festival! At the end of the famous Junkanoo procession, judges award cash prizes for the best music, best costume and best overall group presentation.

A

firework spectacle overhead, toast with friends and samba till you usher 2015’s first sunrise...a heady enough cocktail to ring in the New Year is on offer at Brazil’s Copacabana beach. An incredibly popular place to welcome the New Year, the beach hosts millions of New Year revellers from across the world every year. The midnight display is regarded as one of the best in the world, created by colourful fireworks which are launched from barges docked out in the ocean. The celebrations officially start at around 8pm when live music shows from Brazilian samba to rock bands get the crowd in the mood and the party spills from the sweaty indoors onto the streets. It is customary to wear white in Rio on New Year’s Eve - said to bring you luck for the New Year and cleanse oneself in the ocean waters. Both will fit the bill once you get doused with champagne, sprayed in F1-style by rapturous crowds!

GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, SCOTLAND

T

he Stonehaven Fireball Festival arose from a 19th century fishermen’s festival but it is likely that the use of purifying flame to word off evil spirits and to endow the fishing fleet with luck has pre-Christian origins. At one time, only those born in the burgh of Stonehaven could participate. In the 1960s when the festival began to decline the rules were changed and, today, anyone can take part. Annually, at least 12,000 people fill the town to watch the spectacle. At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, up to 45 local people - sometimes some in kilts - light up the high street of this North Sea coastal town, whirling flaming balls, attached to wire handles, over and around their heads. The marchers, led by a piper, make their way through the centre of town from the Market Cross to the harbour, where they throw their flaming balls into the sea.

The petite and classy Aditi Rao Hydari looks as glamourous on screen as she does sans makeup in a green room. “I can’t stand too many products on my face or hair,” she says, as she gets ready to walk the ramp at the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014. With an intriguing mix of innocence and sophistication and blessed with flawless skin and a classic bone-structure, inherited from her royal lineage, it doesn’t come as a surprise when she refers to her penchant for the elegant look. “I am

When it comes to everyday makeup, Aditi prefers neutral shades on her face and hint of pink on her lips. “I could step out with just lipgloss and mascara.
