FASHION RESOLUTIONS
TO STICK BY IN
2015
Each year we resolve to do a million things like learn a new language or try to look like Bridgette Bardot but let’s resolve to get our fashion sense on the right track this year. Out with the old and predictable and in with a few fashionable risks -what say? words
12
| Shruti Tomar
January-February 2015 selectcitywalk.com
1
Resolve to try a new colour – You’ve been branded the girl who only wears ‘that’ colour and need to break out of that mould. The rainbow is at your feet, pick a shade that you fancy and incorporate it into your wardrobe.
Resolve to differentiate between leggings/ jeggings and jeans – Yes, they are part of the happy extended pant family but what, when, where (wear) is very important here. Leggings are to wear when you are exercise or with layering with tunics and shirt dresses. Do not confuse them as bottom wear to be worn the way denims are.
2
3
Resolve to infuse things from the past into the present – What we mean here is pick a decade and read up on the fashion of that era. Work an accessory or an aspect of that era with a current trend but with caution. Pick one that suits your personality at Select CITYWALK. Rocker styles from the 70s, pencil skirts and shiny waves from the 40s or any other cultural era that you see fitting into your persona would be the way to go. Remember a fine line between Halloween and high fashion.
Resolve to use belts – A fashion essential this one. A belt does to your shape what no bodyshaper can do. There are two kinds that you must own, one that fits your natural waist and the other to be worn around your hips. Instant style elevator!
5
4
Resolve to shell out a fortune for those perfect black pants – NO, they are not boring or basic but a crucial wardrobe requirement. Whether you want subtle details like suede, silk or leather or a fit akin to cigarette pants, boot leg or skinny fit – own one that looks great on you. Try The Collective, GANT and Zara at Select CITYWALK who have them in plenty.
selectcitywalk.com January-February 2015
6
Resolve to try out new stores or designers – You have a few favourites that you run to every time. Try out a new store or designer at Select CITYWALK like the recently opened Shivan and Narresh and stir up your wardrobe. Scour the markets – brick and mortal as well as digital and see what else is available for you. You’ll be surprised.
7
Resolve to buy things you love and not must-own – We all do that. ‘I must have this’ and ‘How can I not own that’. Shed that thought. Buy things you love and that look good on you. Fashion is comfort and style blended into one another and not blindly following trends. And if you must follow a trend that doesn’t entirely suit you, add elements of it to your wardrobe.
8
Resolve to throw out (or better still, donate) anything that looks too young or too old on you – Toss out the frumpy stuff along with the Barbie doll clothes. Your outfits should make you feel good and not anything else. Donate, hand-down or simply let go of it all.
Resolve to abandon the thought that exercise wear is regular wear – It’s not. Please make the effort to dress up post gym for that movie night out or dinner with friends. Also, anything with more than 50% spandex should not see the light of day outside the gym.
10
9
Resolve to move away from expected to the unexpected – Try a new fit in denims or a new length in your skirts or a new hairdo or a new shoe style. Resolve, resolve, resolve

THE BIG
BANG
Who doesn’t wait for sale season to hit town? If Diwali and Christmas were not tough enough on the wallet, come January, with its End of Season Sale (EOSS), and we’re armed mentally, physically and financially to scour the town words

uring the End of Season Sale, the idea is to stay at the top of the first-in-line shopper list and eventually come away with the best steals — and try not to get trampled in the process. A bit of planning and knowing products that have a “best time to buy” will help you get more bang for your buck and make you a sale-shopping expert.

Keep an eye out for the biggest and best sales in town and chart your shopping plan so as to be there at the right time and get the right deal. Saving time is as important as saving money. Always pick up staple classic items during sale season. The reason is you can’t go wrong with them and they are usable in every season. Classic jackets, trousers, a good pair of shoes and structured dresses are items that you can wear at any time of the year, irrespective of what’s trending. Winterwear is always on sale at this time of year. If you’ve been eyeing that gorgeous winter coat, be rest assured it will be on sale and you’ll get a great price.

This means consider how many wears/uses a particular item will have when purchasing it and then invest in a product. To sum it up, remember to follow these commandments of shopping during sale season. The early bird gets the worm, so be early. CAUGHT
RED-HANDED
Red has been misunderstood. Fierce, passionate, dangerous, bold, powerful - these could well be synonyms for the colour, but there’s also fresh, vibrant, soft and soothing. Don’t shy away from this striking hue as it swoops in to sweep you off your feet words
R
ed is undeniably a colour that sets fashion trends. Add a dash of red or drench yourself from top-to-toe in it, and you’re bound to be the centre of attention. The key lies in how you wear it. Here are some ways to add the colour to your wardrobe that makes you stand out, but not in a tacky way.
| Shruti Tomar
(Above) Add an interesting hair accessory to your crown for that added touch of romance, Accessorize, `795; (left) A red blazer can instantly lift any outfit, Zara, `4,690; (below) Who doesn’t love stunning rubies? Pick ’em up! Swarovski, `6,420
BLAZING IN RED The blazer is a classic, and one in red can lift an outfit in an instant. Pair this with denims, fitted plaid or printed trousers, a crisp collared white shirt or a well-cut tea-length skirt. Throwing a red blazer on top of any outfit is guaranteed to keep you at the epicentre of attraction.
DRESSED IN RED A red dress – mini, midi or maxi – is definitely a show-stopper. Time to abandon the little black dress for the little red dress, we say. Capitalise on textural effects such as ruffles, velvet details, pleats and sequins to add drama to the monotone hue. Choose accessories with care, since you don’t want anything taking away from this bold colour. No contrasts but only complementary, non-competitive accessories are what you should pair it with.
A sleek red clutch takes an outfit notches up in a jiffy, Accessorize, `1,345 Nothing spells romance more than a floor-length red gown (left), Bebe, `13,999; and strappy red heels, Charles and Keith, `6,999. Own one already?
SOLELY RED Christian Louboutin has immortalised the red heel, but there are few of us who really strut this trend with confidence. Wear a pair of sky-high red heels with

skirts, fitted ankle-length pants, a cute dress or well-cut denims. Stick to neutrals and solid shades when it comes to your ensemble, as you don’t want anything to compete with the red stilettos. Flats, wedges and strappy sandals in red also add as much pizzazz to an ensemble as heels.
A red V-neck loose tunic worn over monochromatic bottomwear creates a style statement to boot. Zara, `2,990
HAND ME THAT RED Handbags in red are a must-have for any fashionista. A tote, clutches, minaudières, cross-body slings or quilted purses, red arm candy is a wardrobe essential. Wear with black and white separates, a classic dress, formal trousers or red heels.

RED-LIPPED
Red ankle-length pants can be paired with tunics, well-cut peplums or even crisp white shirts for a chic look.
The red lipstick is akin to wearing a red outfit, really. You either go for it or you don’t. Always try several shades of red before deciding which one suits your skin tone. Remember, red lips make a statement. Don’t wear red with heavy makeup. Keep the rest of your face minimal to wear red lips. Try red on the lips by way of glosses, matte, sheer, shimmer, tints and stains. Another approach to red lips is to dump the lip pencil and just let the colour build using a lip brush. In this case, the rest of your outfit may or may not have hints of red.

WHAT NOT TO DO WITH RED
COLOUR ME RED
To make red look good on you, there are rules. Make sure you follow these do’s and don’ts.
Head-to-toe in red is a brazen but stunning move, if you can carry it off. Take red pants and top it with a red sweater. Throw on a printed scarf and wear cute red ballerinas or wedges to complete the look. A red dress with red heels and a little red clutch with a pair of pearl earrings is another way to go. A flouncy red skirt and a red crop top with strappy red flats and minimal accessories help
○ Red lips make a statement much like a necklace or a fabulous handbag. Make sure you don’t choose your shade for red lips blindly. Select one that suits your skin tone.
ease into the head-to-heel red look.
A SHADE OF RED The red palette is crafted to suit almost every red urge one may have. From coral, cherry, crimson to berry, wine and ruby, the rouge rage has many avatars. Marsala, plum and strawberry are other colours in the red family that one can wear. Team this with charcoal, emerald and gold for sheer sophistication.
A backless dress with hook and eye fastening; Zara, `4,990
Gold accessories are always the way to wear red. (Above) twisted belt, Forever New, `2,000; (left) leaf layered earrings, Accessorize, `795
A red shirt looks great with formal black trousers and heeled boots. Guess, `4,999
○W hen wearing red, avoid over-accessorising. You don’t want others to compete with this showstealing hue. Take hints from Michelle Obama, who wears her red with the utmost panache. Don’t pile up the accessories and stick to a statement piece such as a necklace, a bracelet and/or earrings. ○ Slouchy and ill-fitted clothing does not do justice to this hue, so stay away from it. Welltailored and structured garments complement the sophistication that red brings to an ensemble. Sharp lines and a clean cut help avoid the comehither look that anything red can end up exuding, if gone wrong. ○B lack is a safe bet when choosing a colour to complement red. Since it’s a loud colour in itself, avoid another bold tone. Use black when in doubt, always.

MEN IN
RED
The primary hue is not just the ladies’ palette any more. It lit up menswear runways across the globe. So the lads love it too. Read on to know how to add a dash of red into a man’s wardrobe
M Photo courtesy: US Polo
enswear has taken to red in a big way this season. London, Paris and Milan catwalks had men in red sashay down in everything from knitwear, trousers, sweatshirts, the red sock, sneakers and so much more. The palette was brushed with shades of crimson, cherry, ruby, dark berry, blood orange and even pink. From boardroom to ball room, give your wardrobe a shot of red.
CHERRY CHECK
Nothing says dapper like a black T-shirt with hints of red. US Polo, `2,299
Vibrant and delightful, wearing the cherry red will require dollops of confidence and pizzazz. Take a top-to-toe cherry red suit, for instance, that can easily spike your evenings. Not for boardroom dressing, this hue can also be divided into separates, lending you two strong statement items to wear to dress up or down. The casual way to go here would be a cherry red T-shirt with basic denims or shorts. Play this shade down by layering with neutrals.
BERRY BOLD
The dark berries are an easier red to play around with and fits well with a man’s wardrobe as compared to other stronger shades of red. Wine- enthused berry hues look great on jackets, separates and even suits. A sophisticated colour, combine the berry with neutrals like beige, ecru, grey or white for masculine elegance. Another fantastic shade on the red palette, the soothing warm coral is a great way to infuse red into your look. Chinos, shorts, a pocket square or a pair of socks – coral is a refreshing colour that will instantly liven up any ensemble. Combine with navy blue, greys or white for optimal impact.

PINK IS IN
This one’s for the brave-hearted. Blazers, sweatshirts, short-sleeve shirts and colourpopping footwear, hot pink will make you stand out in the midst of a crowd. Pair with whites, navy blues and greys to tone it down and yet carry the colour in style. Celebrate red this season with a whole lot of chutzpah and élan!

ALL ABOUT LOVE
These iconic romantic tales are the stuff movies are made of (pun intended). But let’s talk fashion. The inimitable white shirt, circle skirt and scarf in Roman Holiday, the snug wool pants and tweedy jackets in When Harry Met Sally, the iconic little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the 1940s suit in Casablanca, the sassy-ness of thigh-high boots in Pretty Woman, signature beret in Bonnie & Clyde and the dainty floral dresses in Walk The Line have left an indelible mark on fashion. TO WOMEN, WITH LOVE

The Body Shop’s Red Musk challenges convention, and turns up the heat on the codes of feminine fragrance for strong and spirited women. Warning: Girlies stay away!
ne of the pioneers of the no-animal-testing policy and always a frontrunner in launching eco-friendly products, the iconic retailer of cosmetics and toiletries The Body Shop has yet again stepped a notch higher with the launch of its new offering, the Red Musk fragrance. This, by the brand’s own admission, is the most unconventional scent till date. An intensely different take on feminine fragrances, the product is a bold blend of musk and cinnamon, pepper and tobacco — but “no flowers”. According to their experts, instead of approaching the feminine fragrance the typical girly way, the new product has the warmth of spices amalgamated with man-made, cruelty-free musk to add a new dimension and offer female customers a red-hot dramatic sensuality. The perfume is a wholesome package of irresistible allure, where the distinct biting scent of sun-dried pepper fruits gels well with the sweet yet savoury aroma of cinnamon and is completed by the classic addictive warmth of tobacco, a major ingredient in male perfumes. With a mysterious blackand-red packaging, the Red Musk bottle states clearly that it is for the strong and spirited woman with a swashbuckling persona that is ready to embrace the world.

EYE SPY A SPARK
The eyes say it all and since there will be a lot of gazing-into-each-others-eyes, make sure you got the eye makeup down pat. Soft but yet dressed up, there are several doe-eyed makeup tricks one can experiment with. Try a neat line of a shy lavender eye shadow for a simple yet stunning look. Remember bold shades do start getting messy faster than pastels, you need something to last you all evening. For some colour pop, use shiny green or dark green eyeliner on the lower lash line, ensuring the rest of your makeup is in neutral tones. For the trending cat-eye winged edge, make an outline with your liner on the upper lash and smudge it with the spongy tip that comes with the eye pencil. Another tip here is do not try to get matchy-matchy with your eye makeup and your outfit. Depart from the black smokey eye look and go for the coppery smokey look. This mild metallic shade beats the black inkier smokey look by a long shot. Do up your eye rims with a black liner to secure the look. For that spark in the eyes, bring out the white eye liner and brush it on the inner corners of the eyes.

FLUSH OF ROMANCE
While the first flushes of romance are natural, the ones that follow may need some help from the outside. Pale pink cheeks and nude lips, this look is sure to melt anyone who sets their eyes on you. For the fair-skinned, a honeysuckle, pink, peach and plum blush will look great for that sweet rush of colour to your cheeks and for those who are on the sultrier side of things; the bronzer adds a great glow that merges beautifully with the base to look natural. The colour palette is apricot, mauve and soft berry. The thumb rule is to apply the blush to the apple of the cheeks and then the bronzer along the edges. The lips for this look are a la Jenny Lopez. Those trademark muted lips are achieved by applying foundation on your lips with a moist makeup sponge prior to applying your lip colour. Go for a fleshy, plump shade that has peachy and pink undertones to capitalise this look. Another way to go is the glossy satiny lip with a justbitten lip stain. The trick here is instead of a completely translucent, press the lip colour with your finger tips at the centre of your mouth and dab outwards. Of course, the red lip, read dark berries and wines, is always the weapon one can bring out this season.

DEWY LOVE
That soft, satiny skin is guaranteed to keep all eyes on you or guaranteed to keep the eyes of that someone special on you all evening. A great trick for luscious skin is to apply moisturizer before as well as after you apply makeup. Akin to a nail polish top coat, a dab of your lotion adds that added glow. Pat a bit and apply on your cheekbones, chin and T-zone. Ditch the heavycream based foundations that tend to crack after sometime and instead go light with an illuminating sheer liquid foundation. A light base, followed by concealer just where required and finished with translucent powder should be perfect. Blot with a facial tissue to get rid of any excess. Go on and charm those fellas with that dewy doll look.

HAIR AFFAIR
For the ultra romantic look, create soft darling waves that can be turned into a variety of hairstyles depending on your mood. A playful braid with tendrils cupping your jaw is sure to set heartbeats aflutter. Once you’ve braided your hair, widen and rough it up a bit by pulling on either side of your hair. A gorgeous side-swept French knot but with a twist is apt here. Allow the loose ends to fall softly on one shoulder after you’ve tied your knot. Create flowy Bohemian waves by voluminising your hair with mousse on wet hair followed by blow drying it. Iron little sections of your hair but only the middle part of your strands avoiding the roots and tips. Open out these curls to get the waves. Add a jewelled headband or a cute hair accessory to one side for that sparkle on your special evening. If you want a wavy and undone updo, curl your hair with the curling iron and then secure all of it with a band into a slack ponytail to one side or at the nape of your neck. Wrap your hair in twists around the band into a bun and fasten with bobby pins. Now, brush your fingers and pull out wispy strands that’ll frame your face and finish with a glittering hair accessory on the bun.

REFUEL Refuel not just serves and sells but also promotes healthy eating, and hence is the favoured choice for all health-conscious foodies, who are treated to quick fresh food. The “open kitchen concept allows you to choose veggies for your wraps, sandwiches and subs to ensure that whatever you order is prepared right in front of your eyes and ranks high on the hygiene quotient. With a variety of juices, shakes, mocktails and smoothies on offer, you have enough freshfruit, low-calorie drinks to choose from. Pair these with some very healthy, high-on-nutrients snacks to satiate your hunger pangs and yet feel light. Sheekh kebabs wrapped in tortilla and vinaigrette dressings are not to be missed.
THE TODDY SHOP A place you repeatedly want to visit with your mum for brunch, or with your friends for gluttonous Sundays, The Toddy Shop is where you need to check in. A gentle reminder, though - they do not serve toddy. Indulge in some palatable Keralite and south Indian delicacies. Pothu erachi varattiyathu (authentic Kerala beef fry with porottas), erachi ishtoo (goat and potato curry in coconut milk), erisheri (red lentils and pumpkin cooked with coconut) and iddiappam are sure to make your mouth water. Make sure you pair these with some interesting sides - mulaga podi or the tamarind, ginger and jaggery-based chutney, puli inji.
Authentic Kerala Cuisine
BURGER KING The veg chilli cheezos and chicken nuggets and strips are yummy titbits to start with. Take your pick from a mouth-watering list of burgers - paneer king or veg chilli cheese, chicken tandoor grill or spicy bean royale, which is a breaded, deepfried bean patty with ketchup and American cheese. The star snack is, of course, the veg or chicken whopper made with crisp vegetable or juicy, flame-grilled chicken patty. The lettuce, tomatoes and onions laced with mayonnaise within the freshly toasted sesame bun just adds the perfect drool-worthy oomph factor to these munchies. Pair these with French fries and fountain drinks to keep the hunger pangs at bay for a long time.

ake up, cook, rush to office, be glued to the computer screen from 9 to 5, return home, cook, sleep and wake up again. You think you are trapped in a vicious cycle! And your worries of appearing rotund and podgy continue to plague you because you are unable to sneak in a workout. Well, take a deep breath, because all you need to believe that no matter how busy you are, there are enough extra minutes in your day that you can use to get in shape and slip inside that one dress you drool over every time you are at the shopping mall.
BE AN EARLY BIRD What can be more rejuvenating than waking up to the sun peeping out from behind the clouds? Total bliss and just the perfect start to the day! This doesn’t mean you skimp on the required six to seven hours of sleep every day in favour

of a sweat session. But taking a few simple steps to reset your sleep schedule can earn you those valuable extra minutes to invest in shaping up. Once you wake up, engage yourself in 1530 minutes of jogging, walking or step-ups. If you are a pet lover, take out the leash and take your pooch for a walk. To experience a morning calm, go for a yoga or a meditation session before you step out for the rat race.
WHEN YOU HAVE ONLY 7 MINUTES

with an overhand grip. Place your feet and hands just about shoulder-width apart and squat down as far as possible without losing your grip on your hands and feet. Similarly, opt for lunges and push-ups.
TURN YOUR COMMUTE INTO A WORKOUT
How about sparing yourself the stress of circling around the parking lot to find a spot for your bike or car? Gain more energy by parking farther away, even in a remote lot, and treat yourself to a walk that lasts a few more metres. If you use public transport, get down a few stops earlier and walk to your office, fully charged to perform at work. Once at the workplace, make sure you skip the elevator and take the stairs. The elevator definitely goes up, but it doesn’t pump up your heart rate. Hence, walk up the stairs instead and see your body thanking you. Even if you’re bombarded with work calls and are glued to the phone, you don’t have to be glued to your seat. Make it a habit to talk and walk every time your phone rings. Above all, whether at office or home, adopt a DIY mentality and get up from your seat every time you need to.

WHAT TO DO Though the city’s iconic gondola rides steal the show when talking about romantic dates, the other Venetian draws are no less swoonworthy and will definitely set your beau’s heart aflutter. Sipping Bellinis to the tunes of classical melodies in the majestic Piazza San Marco or capturing a view of spires from atop the Campanile di San Marco, are worth it.
GLIDE THE GONDOLA
W
hile on the lookout for a romantic getaway, certain classics definitely stand the test of time, and Venice in Italy is one of these. A gondola ride in the city is one activity every lovestruck couple yearns to indulge in. When in this endlessly fascinating city, pick up a gondola at any of the main bridges - the Rialto or Accademia - as there can actually be nothing more romantic than gliding in the canals and sailing slowly underneath delicately arched bridges with your loved one on a starry night or a pleasant evening. Add to that a leisurely stroll hand-inhand down the quieter streets of Venice,

the opulent Baroque and Renaissance buildings or a melodious night at the opera, and Venice oozes romance from every piazza, bridge and canal.

SWIZZLE YOUR SWISS PASSIONS
J
ust in case you are clueless about exalted romantic experiences, the breathtaking Mount Pilatus, Lucerne’s (Switzerland) highest peak, captivate your senses. At 2,132 m above sea level, feel on top of the world with the love of your life, and let the tranquillity of the mountains provide the perfect backdrop to your relationship. Watch the sunrise and sunset, which gives you numerous opportunities for stunning camerawork that can be preserved for posterity. And never stop filling your palate with some of the most unique dishes drawn from both the world and the local cuisines in a number of upscale restaurants of the historic Hotel Pilatus Kulm (estd 1890). This is one destination away from the din, where you are bound to have an altitudinal surge in your romantic eco-system.
60
WHAT TO DO Take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway to the snow-capped summit or enjoy the amazing views from the gondola or cableway. Relish mountaintop fondue or hot grills from the delectable restaurants or on the terrace, where the views are to die for.

GREEK BLISS
A
destination that should be on the top rungs of the 2015 go-to list for lovebirds, the stunningly beautiful Greek Isles are an eye-opener for those who feel island romance is overrated. From relaxing under the stars or on a perfect sandy beach to being mesmerised by the idyllic sunset view holding each other’s hand or swimming in balmy seas at dusk, embark on an island-hopping trail along the Greek Isles this New Year and rejuvenate your relationship. This beguiling love nest, which has all the trappings of a dream destination, would be incomplete without endless banter with your loved one over good food and drink at the many tavernas (Greek restaurants/cafés ) scattered across the islands. So check out this amazing locale for a fresh take on island romance.
selectcitywalk.com January-February 2015
WHAT TO DO Make a dash for Santorini the most visually stunning of the Greek Isles - for romantic accommodations in the “cave-rock hotels”, which have rooms built into caves found in the wall of the caldera (a steep cliff). Take a short hike over rocks to get cosy with your partner under water while swimming at the Red Beach.

WHAT TO DO Don’t forget to take a romantic stroll through the popular rock garden of Ryoanji, a Zen temple in northwest Kyoto, or shop for titbits at Kitano Tenmangu’s bustling monthly flea market. Also, to capture a panoramic view of cherry blossom-laden Kyoto, seal a fun one-day deal at “Amanohashidate Viewland Kyoto” and go crazy with your partner on rollercoasters, jet-coasters and Ferris wheels or simply dine at the various skyline restaurants to indulge in the view from above. Enjoy warm Japanese hospitality and lavish amenities at “Tawaraya”, one of the finest ryokans (inn) in Japan.
BLOSSOM IN KYOTO
E
xotic and colourful, drenched in peaceful tranquillity, this locale seems like God’s own garden. Featuring the island country’s rich culture and most refined cuisine, well complemented by ancient shrines, temples and majestic palaces, Kyoto is the mirror to “traditional” Japan. But the sight to behold here are the cherry blossoms, which according to Japanese belief is a metaphor for life – an annual reminder that time is precious. So step into this romantic hideout with your partner now - capture breathtaking views from the mountains, unwind at the historic pagodas atop lush green hills or take the most beautiful boat ride along the cherry blossom-lined Okazaki canal. A comfy stay at an authentic “ryokan” (a traditional Japanese inn) completes the romantic holiday.
WHAT TO DO Enjoy some “alone time” by taking pleasant walks among the natural treasures of Vaipahi. A place to stop in the circuit around the isles of Tahiti, The Water Gardens of Vaipahi, offer wonderful views of water, light and exquisite vegetation. Also, depart for the most romantic voyages in the legendary South Pacific aboard luxurious cruise ships, super yachts or freighter passenger liners between the islands of Tahiti.
FORGET REALITY IN TAHITI
I
f gazing with your partner at the endless ocean and the dashing waves or sunbathing and a few occasional dips in the cool ocean water make up our perfect romantic holiday, Tahiti in French Polynesia is the go-to spot for you this New Year. Described by novelist James A Michener as the “most beautiful island in the world”, it is the perfect landscape for the two of you to rekindle the flame of love. Tiny islands, crystal-clear water, quiet, deserted beaches make Tahiti the perfect spot for honeymooners and lovebirds for their moments of romantic bliss. To up the romantic ante and experience the ultimate castaway experience, book an overwater bungalow.

WHAT TO DO If you miss the Piazzale Michelangelo, you will regret taking in the view of the most romantic sunset ever. This arcade offers a sumptuous terrace where you can sit and stare at the Arno river valley and the historical bridges. To heat things up, take a walk in Piazzale Michelangelo gardens, which are abloom with more than 2,500 varieties of rose. Skip the big tourist restaurants and sit by the street at Cacio Vino to enjoy a glass of “Prosecco” with snacks or freshly prepared lasagne. And make sure you stop for a gelato before heading back to your hotel.

FAIRYTALE FLORENCE
W
hile in your quest to head to the perfect love nest, you’d have to be a zombie to not feel amorous in Florence (Italy), a magnetic and out-andout romantic destination in Europe. Many romantic movies have been shot in this picturesque city. From A Room With a View to Light in the Piazza, you can recreate movie scenes with your significant other by visiting some enchanting Florence art galleries, cathedrals and churches that will set both of you in just the right mood for love. Ogle at the frescoes in the numerous museums or sip Chianti (a type of Italian wine) in the outdoor cafes or let a walk by the vineyards inspire and renew your love altogether. What is said about Florence is “return time and again and you still won’t see it all”. So plan your sightseeing when in the city and focus on making memories that will last forever.

A FRENCH-CANADIAN AFFAIR
I
f you are dreaming of a cosier holiday, head to the French-Canadian city of Quebec. Whether it’s the homegrown French language or the colonial architecture or the horse-drawn carriages, Quebec city in Canada seems to be inherently designed with romantic escapes in mind. Sashay down the snow-covered streets of the city, or cuddle up by the fireplaces or snuggle up under a blanket in a horse-drawn “caleche” (a light, low-wheeled carriage) or get epicurean delights with a delectable fondue for two at a first-rate French restaurant and finally retire for a night in romance in a quaint 17th-century “Auberge” (inn), complete with woodbeamed ceilings and exposed brick walls for an otherworldly experience with your beloved.
selectcitywalk.com January-February 2015
WHAT TO DO To take in the views of North America’s most romantic city, cruise through the St Lawrence river or enjoy a walk along the Promenade SamuelDe Champlain with your significant other. Also, dance with Château Frontenac and Old Québec’s 18th-century architecture as a backdrop or float in hot-air balloons drifting over rooftops and the citadel.

BALANCING
ACT
Here’s a sneak-peek into fashion-forward Shraddha Kapoor’s personal beauty regime
I
f there’s one Bollywood diva who is fast ascending the fashion charts, let alone the box office, it has to be the Aashiqui 2 stunner Shraddha Kapoor. She balances the girl-next-door to glamgal looks effortlessly with her personal style. From saris to lehengas, anarkalis and cocktail dresses, or any other ethnic Indian/Western attire, the star kid has been seen experimenting with her look on more than one occasion and has succeeded in impressing fashion gurus around the globe with her sartorial choices.
HAIR CARE SECRETS Kapoor believes in the power of a simple hair-oil massage and gets one done weekly to keep her tresses healthy. She also opts for a deep-tissue head massage every month, as it makes her hair roots stronger, resulting in luscious, beautiful hair. A pack of aloe vera and curd works well for the actor. She also uses hair serum to control frizz and prefers shampoos from The Body Shop and L’Oreal.
MAKEUP MANTRA Less is more is this emerging fashion icon’s mantra when it comes to makeup. She finds “concealing” the most valuable makeup trick, and hence is fond of
66
concealers, as they help mask flaws and make the skin look even. A waterproof kajal, mascara, concealer and a tinted lip balm are Kapoor’s makeup must-haves.
PERSONAL STYLE CHECK This vivacious young actor rocked her look both as the simple Aarohi (in Aashiqui 2) and as the boho-styled Aisha (in Ek Villain). And let’s not miss her latest glammed-up avatar in the Emraan Hashmi-starrer Ungli. But when it comes to her personal fashion or style priority, comfort is the word that rules her taste. She says that if her closet were on fire, she would save her track pants. Even her many public appearances state that she loves her denims and enjoys pairing them with various casual separates.
‘Less is more’ is this emerging fashion icon’s mantra when it comes to make-up Shraddha Kapoor loves to flaunt Steve Madden’s ankle straps. She’s often spotted in one.
DAILY BEAUTY RITUAL While her beauty essentials comprise of kajal, face wash and moisturiser, what tops the list is having lots of water. She makes sure she is well hydrated, stays optimistic at all times and enjoys every moment. She is of the view that dull moments reflect on the face instantly. Kapoor names her mother as her beauty icon and says she admires her the most.

REPUBLIC DAY
A SALUTE How much of Republic Day and the Indian Constitution do we really know? Check out these facts and figures
T
o most of us, January 26 is just another public holiday, a day to stay indoors and enjoy a day off from work. Yes, we know that the Constitution of India officially came into force on this day and that there is a parade that takes place in New Delhi from Rashtrapati Bhawan via India Gate to the Red Fort, but how much about the actual day in 1950 do we know? In a bid to get a modern-day understanding of the mood and tone of our Constitution, let’s try and recreate this very day 66 years back.
68
January-February 2015 selectcitywalk.com
The Constitution of India was handwritten and calligraphed in both English and Hindi- not typeset or printed. The original copies are kept in special heliumfilled cases in the Library of the Parliament of India. The documents were signed by 284 members of the Constituent Assembly (including 15 women) on January 24, 1950.
Republic Day is celebrated for three days, ending on January 29.
The hymn Abide With Me is played on Republic Day as it was Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite song.
The Constituent Assembly took two years, 11 months and 17 days to draft the Constitution after the Drafting Committee submitted it to them.
The national emblem - an adaptation of the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath - was adopted by the government on 26 January, 1950.
Our Constitution has been hailed as one of the best, as it has only seen 94 amendments.
selectcitywalk.com January-February 2015
It was raining outside the Parliament on the day the Constitution was signed, and it was considered a good omen by the people who signed it.
Our Constitution is often called “a bag of borrowings”. The concepts of liberty, equality and fraternity were taken from France; the five-year plan from the USSR; the directive principles (socio-economic rights) from Ireland; and the law on which the Supreme Court functions, from Japan.
Our Constitution is the longest in the world, with 44 articles, 12 schedules and 94 amendments.

CONTEST CORNER
This Christmas, we made our shoppers win big at Select CITYWALK with #SCWCHRISTMASHEIST. Amazing prizes from different brands were on offer for the winners and all shoppers got the chance to get exactly what they wished for from Select CITYWALK! Here is recap of the activities...
#My Favourite Brand An online face-off between 10 brands was conducted where people had to tweet to support their favourite brand and make it win. The supporters of the winning brand were rewarded amazing gift vouchers and the top five tweeters were invited to Select CITYWALK on December 20, 2014 to participate in the next round of the contest. The participants of this round got an opportunity to take home more goodies. Among the participating brands, Chumbak, Burger King, Guess, Krispy Kreme and Da Milano were the winners while Happily Unmarried, Haagen-Dazs, Bebe, Movenpick and Foot Kraft were handed the wooden spoon. The top five tweeps were: @theerailivedin, @ JadduJhappi, @piyusha13, @amit_seliya and @simple_smart20.

#Christmas Hero In another Christmas contest, visitors at Select CITYWALK had to complete the tasks that were flashing on the screens at various places in the mall. The pictures had to be uploaded on our Facebook page with the following tags: #ChristmasHero and #SCWChristmasHeist, after which those people had to show up at the Gratification desk next to the Concierge to collect exciting prizes.
#What I want for Christmas Select CITYWALK turned Santa for its visitors. People had to tweet their wish for Christmas- what they wanted from Select CITYWALK. Wishes for 20 people were fulfilled and some of the gift hampers that they bagged included DSLR Camera, Da Milano bag, Sephora hamper, Sony Xperia smartphone, microwave oven, Steve Madden heels, Christmas dinner at Haagen-Dazs among many others. Sumit (@socialspree) and Shikha (@sshikha_ch) from Delhi wanted just the perfect gift for their friend and husband respectively. We succeeded in bringing a smile on their faces by gifting a Da Milano bag to Sumit and an Escada Perfume to Shikha. Vikrant Sharma (dreamer_vikrant) another Delhite received just the perfect Christmas date with his partner at Haagen-Dazs.
