A warm welcome aboard! The year 2015 was a momentous year for Indian Aviation. India’s domestic airlines carried 81.09 million passengers in calendar 2015, as against 67.4 million in the previous year, registering a growth of 20.3 per cent. According to International Air Transport Association, currently India is the ninth-largest civil aviation market in the world, with a market size of around $16 billion. GoAir looks forward in contributing significantly to the India aviation growth story. During December, domestic airlines registered 19.7 per cent growth compared to the corresponding month in the previous year. GoAir continued its performance with healthy load factor and best on time performance of 81 per cent despite the fog season. We have also improved our market share during December. We are strengthening our domestic network in the upcoming Summer Schedule effective end of March 2016. GoAir will be the first airline to directly connect Mumbai - Leh and Bengaluru - Port Blair in the wake of growing demand on these sectors. Daily direct connectivity between Bengaluru, Patna and Ranchi is also a part of the summer schedule. We are also in process of improving flight timings in select sectors to ensure a better flying experience. I wish you a very pleasant flight and we look forward to serving you again.

NEW CRITERIA FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Under its new Comprehensive Sustainable Tourism Criteria for India (STCI) guidelines, tourism companies in the hotel and tour operations sectors, including those in ‘beach, backwater, lake and river areas’, will be provided with a series of measures

to ensure their operations are sustainable. Hotels, at the project stage, are required to incorporate various eco-friendly measures including sewage treatment, rainwater harvesting systems, waste management systems, pollution control, the introduction

of non-chloro-fluoro carbon (CFC)-emitting equipment for refrigeration & air conditioning, and measures for energy & water conservation. In the same way, operational hotels, should be ‘sustainable and energy-efficient’, and conform to local culture and design.

A MAKEOVER OF RAJASTHAN TOURISM Rajasthan Tourism has launched a global campaign with an all new look to promote Rajasthan as an ideal travel destination for any time of the year and to spread awareness about the lesser-known destinations of the state. The new website tourism.rajasthan.gov. in opens with attractive

photographs of the most picturesque spots. It also provides a better user experience with the most useful links easily available on the home page. While sections like Discover, Experience, and Plan help travellers create their itinerary, other links share popular experiences that the state offers.

ECO-TOURISM ON RISE India’s first planned ecotourism destination Thenmala is situated about 72 km from Thiruvananthapuram, in Kollam district. It shares its resources with the famous Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary at the foothills of the Western Ghats. Thenmala

TIPS

KOCHI TO MUNNAR

Best time to travel is in the morning. Avoid driving post sunset, as the road has quite a few hairpin turns that may be risky when the fog moves in.

In search of paradise, embark on a road trip to Munnar from Kochi. While the city satiates your shopping urges, Munnar offers a place to enjoy nature at its best, walk through rolling hills of tea gardens and watch the fog form a hazy shroud over the hills.

ROUTE Almost three and a half hours away from Kochi, take NH-49 to reach Munnar. Though the road is smooth, it may get narrow at some places and there are quite a few hairpin turns. Once you cross the Neryamangalam Bridge, the road is flanked with trees on both sides, accompanying you till Adimali. Almost 8 km from Munnar, one can see tea plantations with a beautiful panoramic view of the Western Ghats.

PIT STOPS Kerala exudes immense natural beauty, and at Valara, you can spend some time to enjoy the milky waterfalls. You can shop for some fragrant spices, and even refuel at some of the many restaurants here.

aipur is popular on every traveller’s map and it rightly should be. A gateway to Rajasthan and its many treasures, the city is an amalgamation of urban bustle, vibrant people and stunning cityscapes. However, even in this chaos lies a sense of elegance and rhythm, making a trip to the city quite eventful.

LOST IN TIME The princely state is known for its magnificent forts, and Amber Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions. Perched on a hill almost 11 km away from the city, this fort was built in the 16th century and constructed in red sandstone and marble. The fort

is massive with extravagant durbar halls and courtyards that were once filled with palace officials and royalty. One of the prettiest parts of the palace is the Sheesh mahal or the glass palace. Every inch of the palace from wall to ceiling is ornate and decorated in glass pieces. Not far from this grandeur, on the Hill of Eagles or Cheel ka Teela of the Aravalli range, is a fort built in 1726 to protect Amber Fort. Named after king Jai Singh II, Jaigadh Fort is another marvelous piece of architecture that stands proud and a clear 400 m above Amber Fort. The rugged and highly fortified fort has tall thick walls built from red sandstone, signature to the region. Though it may be less popular than its neighbour, come here to

In the heart of the city is the iconic Hawa Mahal, replete with its famed blushcoloured, honey combed facade that may seem a tad overwhelming at first. The fivestorey palace at Badi Choupad (a big square) is in the midst of a market, surrounded by bustling streets, shops and numerous tourists. The palace was built in such a way that its high walls have many small windows or jharokhas with intricate lattice work. The women of the palace used these windows to look out onto the streets and watch the humdrum of daily life.

T R A V E L

D I A R Y

TIME TO SPLURGE Jaipur is a treasure trove for trinkets, silver jewellery, and brightly-coloured bandhani (tie-n-dye) fabrics with intricate work. It is what you call a shopper’s paradise and a visit to this city must include a trip to the local markets. While MI road is considered trendy and a great tourist attraction, the real heart of shopping lies in markets such as Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar. Take an auto rickshaw ride to one of these markets and spend the day exploring as various streets entwine. Whispers of

As you submit to its silence and space, the vast salt desert that is the Little Rann of Kutch, slowly shares its secrets. Brinda Gill

he Little Rann of Kutch - being smaller than the Great Rann of Kutch that stretches to its north and northwest - covers almost 5,000 sq km. According to one explanation, the region was once a shallow part of the Arabian Sea. And then a geological uplift cut off its link with the sea and left most of it just above sea-level. The occurrence also left the soil seeped with salt, the land with a distinct topography, and the region with a unique rhythm of life. Adding to this fascinating rhythm is the wildlife sanctuary’s strategic location of being on the migratory route of birds flying from the Middle East and Central Asia, to escape the winter there, as well as being a destination for many flocks. Birders tell of spotting thousands of birds and mixed flocks at the larger water bodies. They speak of a bird count of over 250 species at the Rann that includes resident and migratory, from the small to the large, seed eating to birds of prey, terrestrial and water birds.

ASIATIC WILD ASS AND MORE The Little Rann of Kutch is home to the endangered Asiatic Wild Ass. Standing strong and sturdy, a bit horse-like, of brown body with a brown chestnut mane running along its back, white underparts and muzzle, its colours drew from the salt desert. Their trot showed off their strength and grace, conveying their reputation of being one of the sturdiest animals being able to withstand high and low temperatures, and sustaining themselves with scrub grass and vegetation. Buoyed by the sighting, a sense of expectation set in. A dark stretch of furrowed earth suggested that Common Cranes had been at work for they forage on tubers of dried sedge, a family of flowering plants under the earth, their stout bills assisting them in their task. Moving on, they appeared, their colours blending into the landscape. True to the parental attributes credited to them, they were a group of three, two parents with their juvenile.

as disarming as it is humble. “It is people like you, honestly. When I see fans, the way they come to me, crowd around my house every Sunday, I feel as though I owe you something. I have to do it for so many well-wishers. Any challenge to my limited ability as an actor does get me anxious. This is a better way to address one’s insecurities and enhance our creativity rather than allowing them to weigh you down,” says Mr Bachchan. It is perhaps this attitude borrowing a verse from his father’s poem - “Mann ka ho to achcha, na ho to aur bhi achcha” - that makes him a real Big B. Unmindful of all criticism - of trying too hard, choosing gimmicky roles or acting bizarre, selling his name for products - he refuses to slow down. “I thank God

EXPERIMENTING IS KEY “When you attain a certain age, you’re obviously not going to get the main lead. So there are character roles. It is up to you to decide whether you want to go into a character role category or not. I want to continue working, and I’m happy doing character roles,” adds the actor who carved another niche hitherto unknown of in Hindi cinema - that of a mature leading man. And much like whatever he did, these character roles were unconventional too. Some have even been outrageous, to the extent of being bizarre. But Bachchan pulled them off without any reference. “Sometimes you do tend to repeat what has succeeded or what has been appreciated. I was getting these opportunities and I wanted to keep working. But you know, at 72, you can’t look at some kind of image that you have to maintain. I am doing what I enjoy and that makes me very happy and definitely blessed,” quips the superstar, while adding, “I’m at a stage where the responsibility of being the leading man, or a film’s success is

Okay, people didn’t like some of my films such as Nishabd or Aladin or Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag and trashed it but I am absolutely fine with that. I didn’t mind doing those roles because they tested my creativity and I enjoyed doing them.” Where there were praises, there was criticism too. Criticism has been part of his life, and overlooking it has become habit. After all, wasn’t he initially criticised for being too tall, criticised for his baritone (even rejected by Ameen Sayani in a radio audition!). In fact, his wife was extremely critical of the chartbusting Mere Angne Mein from Laawaris. “Well Jaya was repulsed by that song. She saw the rushes and unmindful of who was present there, she burst out saying - how can you do this? How can you be so crass? She has not even seen the film till date.” According to Amitabh, Shweta and Abhishek, his children, are his severest critics, who analyse everything right from his appearance, to his dancing whenever any film releases. The strongest criticism from the family came before he agreed to be on TV for the first time. “I was at a stage where I wasn’t doing much. My work was not being

appreciated. My films were not doing well. I just looked at it as another opportunity,” says the actor. Amitabh Bachchan was taken to England to see a recording of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire with Chris Tarrant who was doing it at the BBC’s legendary Elstree Studios, and once he had said yes, he was all set to create TV history.

In his recent film Wazir with Farhan Akhtar, he essays the role of Panditji, a chess master confined to a wheelchair - for which he lived with that device for three months to get into the skin of the character. He also recorded a duet with co-actor Farhan Akhtar. Titled Atrangi Yaari, the song speaks about their unusual friendship in the film. “I am blessed that these intelligent minds consider me worthy of their films and instil in me the will to keep on working,” says the actor.

OVERCOMING FEARS “There is always this apprehension and anxiety that I may lose everything - simply because nothing is permanent. I think the eventuality of that should never be forgotten. There is always going to be a risk; if you are aware of that risk and the fact that it could happen at the drop of a hat, perhaps that is what drives you to not fall into that situation again,” confesses the actor. This philosophy reflects in his blogs as well - another habit that the superstar diligently adheres to - of writing a blog entry every single day. And his take on life reflects in this post, written on the eve of his birthday - “Struggles and uncertainties, successes and disappointments, accusations and controversies, ill health and months in hospital, all such a vivid kaleidoscope of moments, events, images simply unbelievable and unimaginable...”

While shooting for Mukul Anand’s Khuda Gawah, Najibullah, the then president of Afghanistan, provided Amitabh with half the country’s air force for his protection. Khuda Gawah became one of the most watched Indian films in Afghanistan. During the making of this film, Amitabh, who plays a Pathan, developed blisters on his face due to the constant application and removal of his fake beard.

HIGH MODERNISM Reflecting innovation, abstraction – to quite an extent – intellectualism, radical theories and ideas, this era was dominated by the body of works by artists such as KK Hebbar, GR Santosh, and Gogi Saroj Pal, among others.

THE BARODA SCHOOL AND GROUP 1890 Formed with the fervent desire to forge a native but contemporary language of art, this group included Ambadas, Jyoti Bhatt, Jeram Patel, J Swaminathan, GM Sheikh and Vivan Sundaram.

Towards the end of the fifties, many painters and sculptors in the school of Arts and Crafts joined hands in search of what amounted to a new way of life in contemporary art. It has been regarded as one of the most important art movements.

Sculptors broke away from the naturalism and portraiture of colonial art and experimented with different materials and techniques to lend a more personal and reflective quality to their work. TANTRA Works by artists such as Biren De, Sohan Qadri, PT Reddy and GR Santosh, highlight the neo-tantra movement. The deep awareness and consciousness appearing in many of these artists’ paintings, highlight their transcendent imagery.

SCULPTURES SK Bakre

GROUP 1890 was a short-lived group of 12 artists in Baroda, who tried to intervene in what they perceived to be a lagging national modernist art movement. They emphasised the presence of a numen, or essence of an internal reality, in their work.

Sohan Qadri

The Progressive Artists Group was founded in Bombay after Independence and comprised six radical artists working to establish new cultural identities and a modernist art culture in India. The group worked in opposition to the colonial, academic standard as well as the revivalist art movement established by the Bengal School.

It is a stone of unconditional love and peace that opens the heart chakra to all forms of love, that is, self-love, family love, pet love, and romantic love. brings deep inner healing and self-love. Rose quartz is calming, reassuring, and excellent for use in trauma or crisis. In your existing relationships, it will restore trust and harmony, and encourage unconditional love.

WONDERFUL PROPERTIES Little is known about this beautiful stone that has been used in jewellery as a pink colored stone. Healing emotionally, rose quartz brings forgiveness,

compassion, kindness and tolerance. It improves one’s self-esteem and sense of self-worth. It balances emotions and heals emotional wounds and traumas of the past, bringing peace and calm. Rose quartz has been used since ages in healing to benefit the heart, the circulatory system, infertility, headaches, kidney disease, migraines, vertigo, sinus problems, throat problems, depression, addictions, for slowing signs of aging, reducing wrinkles and for weight loss. It is also helpful for supporting brain functions and increasing intellect. Rose quartz is said to soothe burn-pain and blistering and helps smoothen the complexion. It is also said to be helpful in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dementia.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Rose quartz gently draws off negative energy and replaces it with loving vibes. It strengthens your emotional status and sensitivity and aids the acceptance of necessary change. It helps one to

express emotions and heartache in a verbally acceptable manner and clears off emotional conditioning that no longer serves life’s purpose; it soothes internalised pain and heals deprivation. Over time, with prolonged exposure to the stone, it gradually removes fears, resentment and anger. For maximum healing benefits, wear this stone close to your body, especially over the heart, as it is the stone for the heart. If you are not comfortable wearing a stone, you can also place the rose quartz stone in the form of a pyramid, cube, globe, ball, cylinder or any sculpture/artifact on the heart, thymus, or in the relationship corner (Feng Shui south west) of bedrooms. Sit with a rose quartz in meditation when your mind is feeling disturbed, it will help calm you down emotionally and bring inner peace. Holding a rose quartz and repeating positive affirmations lead to self direction; the stone connects to your mind and soul, and reminds you of your intentions. Once you have set your heart free, your heart feels lighter and you have an overwhelming feeling of peace.

KNOW THE STONE

When choosing a rose quartz pendant or ring, do hold it in your hand and only buy the one you personally connect with. Impurities and cracks or too many formations are not a good sign of stone purity. Chipped corners and cracks in the stone are not good signs from healing point of view, as visually, it sends messages to the brain of imperfect energy. Do not use stones that have been used by other people without purifying them, as the residual energy of the user may affect you adversely. It can be purified in soft running river water to clean and can be recharged under full moonlight.

In Feng Shui, one can find many carvings in rose quartz - from mandarin ducks to hearts, wealth pots and gourds (wu lou), usually tied by a red string and completed as a tassel with the mystic knot pattern. One can also place one of these stones in each corner of the bedroom, or on your bedside or under your pillow. This will allow the energy to resonate out into the area where you are sleeping.

Book shelf IN THE SHADOWS OF DEATH By Sourabh Mukherjee Price: `195 Published by: Srishti Publishers

IS YOUR CHILD READY TO FACE THE WORLD?

A whodunit novel with several twists, the book has elements of romance, corporate scandals, and suspense with a strong emotional undercurrent. A psychological thriller in the true sense of the phrase, the story delves deep into the psyche of its characters. The novel explores the city of Kolkata in a way few contemporary novels have attempted. The City of Joy is not just a backdrop but another resplendent character in the novel.

By Dr Anupam Sibal Published by: Penguin Books India

The thought of being a father, of shouldering the responsibility of fatherhood can be extremely daunting, especially during rapidly changing times. Academics, extracurricular activities and numerous gadgets make heavy demands on children’s time, and often, it gets difficult to communicate with them. As a father, paediatrician and Group Medical Director of Apollo Hospitals Group, Dr Anupam Sibal shares his approach to effectively establishing a connection with children, and shouldering the responsibility of fatherhood. The foreward, penned by Amitabh Bachchan, says, “There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings.” Dr Sibal discusses the importance of gratitude, compassion, forgiveness, integrity, humility among others, and provides examples from the lives of great men and women.

TRAIN TO BOMBAY By Jaina Sanga Price: `225 Published by: Amaryllis Set in Mumbai, the seven stories in this collection are subtle and evocative, and draw a cast of characters that captivates and unnerves. Through prose that is serene, a grand narrative of the city is created, one that is brutal yet tender, intimate yet expansive, exotic yet familiar. Taken together, the stories create a literary portrait of a city that is familiar yet confounding.

NUMEROLOGY SANDHIYA MEHHTA Numerologist and Vastu Consultant

Sandhiya Mehta is a Ace Numerologist, vast expert and now a worldwide brand who represents success and growth, for herself and for people she counsels. She has expanded the numerological field with her research and knowledge, and with advanced experiences has helped her to help every human soul in return, to guide them to their enchanting dreams, gain power over their fortunes and to come alive. With an aura of bright lights and her charismatic personality, she has achieved of what many dream. She is in the field for more than thirty years, and in this journey has helped and exchanged energies and ideas, guided people to lead better lives, has received dozens of honours and recognitions, like ‘The Nari Ratna award, Indira Gandhi Priyadarshani Award, Rastriya Ratan award, Mahila Shiromani award, 4p Brand recognitions, ‘The Global Indian Leaders excellence award and many more such appreciations. ————Nume Numerology is the most accurate predictive science, and has evolved from the ages of people counting stars as numerical references to today where we add up all the calculations and we have an outcome that guides you to the events in your life, and stay prepared for them.“To a person who seeks success, my system will bring success, happiness and prosperity. And to those who are already successful it will bring sustainability, positive reinforcements, further success and introduce to a new and higher perspective and lifestyle.” The Journey to my methods “I am someone who has evolved, and with every step of my life have just tried to be better in what I love, I don't just predict your future, I communicate, consult and help you empower your energies.” Every person is having an energy, a combination and each combination is different, hence they have only certain types of energy and lack other ones. This is what makes us human, that we can’t be perfect but we have to strive to be. My exclusive research and study of missing numbers in your birth graph helps me to determine what are the strong energies that I can see in you and uplift the missing energies to suit to your dreams and ambitions. With my years or research and extremely positive results, I help these missing energies in your graph. Its like providing nutrition to a body, by way of simple remedies and self improvement tools that I have developed by myself.

Advertorial

Spotlight: Do not be afraid to know your future in 2016 When we consult for your future, we wont just discuss the negatives, we all evaluate your positives and the forces you can trust. This helps everyone to know a certain degree of their energies, and helps you work with them to channelize them into right direction. I suggest don't be afraid, take a plunge and be aware about yourself. As they say, “Buddha wasn't enlightened, he was aware” The curious case of 4 & 8 “In my research, nearly 70% people are connected to these numbers, and this loop then influences your further generations too.’ One usually guards themselves because we have all heard a lot about disappointments and delays, sorrows and hardships of 4 & 8 and with 7 they form a trio of these energies. But I see them powerful steroids, to be handled carefully. Then I will channelize it to positive planning and maximise your fortune’s profits. Feel blessed if you belong to them, we will empower your life and, learn through 4 & 8 and reap more fruits of your hard work than you would have previously did. Handle your energies well, because only in the right hands they will empower with 4 & 8.

Follow us for daily predictions:

@SandhiyaMehta

Sandhiya.Mehhta

Is life simpler without 4 & 8: The other side of the story Individually every number has its massive merits but if it doesn’t get the support of your fadic/destiny number it cannot do much for you. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations, but if you are still struggling and have faced certain problems you should try and understand your state of energies and detangle the web, to create a free path for your future. “A bright star has its own energy, but lighting a lamp in the dark is much more meaningful.” We all are a mix of many numbers, their combinations play us differently and affects us differently. We have to empower these combinations in our fortune, to achieve what is extraordinary, which makes us exemplary individuals, that help themselves and in addition help their families, society, help someone in need who looks unto you. “We have seen the sunrise, but to feel the warmth of it we have to wake up every day.” And every one of us should strive to be more than what we can be, I do so, so should you. And let My Numerology help you and prepare you for this serene but extraordinary life. My advice “Knowledge empowers you, and there is nothing more powerful than to understand yourself, your potentials, what holds you back, what drives you forward.” I provide you this knowledge about yourself, though numerology. Knowledge about finances, career, turnaround years, lucky dates, months, years, things that help you have a strong backup plan for everything in life. “No mantra, fasting, name changes singularly guarantees you anything. Ultimately its you who has to foresee the future, and I help you to do so.” Follow a simplistic solution that I call Sandhiya Meh Mehhta’s remedy system, and we will work on your energies and align them in the right direction The Success road ahead There is a Buddhist saying, “You yourself must strive; the Buddha’s just point the way.” There are no criteria to evaluate what the results of the remedies are; I just believe in helping who believe in the power of universe. If you believe in yourself and the universe let me just show you a direction, you yourself will lead on the right path and achieve the results within no desired time. I have received tremendous positive feedbacks to have faith in the universe myself. “I am not god; I just understand my field of work and use it to help people, guide them and provide them with some efficient ways to be happy, peaceful, ever-glorious and a good part of our society & I continue to achieve results with all my clients."- Sandhiya Mehhta.

QUALITY EDUCATION It’s that time of the year again when students are buried in their notes, examinations are being scheduled, and both parents and children get flustered over college admissions. Fret not. We help you with a simple checklist that will push you in the appropriate direction.

C

hoosing one college or university over the other mainly depends on the course you wish to pursue. Obviously, an engineering student would benefit best when studying in an engineering-specific college, over pursuing a generic course in a university. As industries are growing in India with leaps and bounds, it has become necessary to work towards achieving quality higher education, that helps students to cross the boundary from academics to the professional stream effortlessly.

Placement: This is a very important factor. Most students, other than those pursuing an academic-specific course, opt for colleges and universities that provide a guaranteed placement opportunity. A better education leads to better job opportunities, and placements are a sure shot confirmation of securing a job easily. Top institutes are able to attract top notch companies, and this is beneficial to both students and future employers. Thus, placement cells and counselling centres help students make their mind up while taking the final leap.

Fee structure: Only an appropriate fee structure will compel you to finally fill that college form. Do check for availability of scholarships that may provide an extra edge for you. Alternatively, you may check for educational loans to help you make your dreams come true.

Essentials such as a well-stocked library, laboratories, classrooms, nearby hostel facilities and PG residences, etc., are important to keep a note of while choosing your college. In addition, recreational activities, hosting of festivals help in the overall development of the student.

not land you your dream job, but a well-placed internship may tip the scales. Many colleges even include internships in their final GPA, ensuring students go out into the field and practically apply the various concepts they are taught in the classroom. Work experience counts a lot more, and when in sync with your degree, will make you sought after not just after completing college, but even years later. Tips, practices and nuances of the industry when picked up on the field add immense mileage to your resume.

Location: When studying in a different city, one must note the location of the college, hostel facilities and the availability of basic amenities. Even when studying in the same city, it is often better to find hostel facilities closer to your college, so time will not be spent needlessly in travel, to and fro.

Curriculum: When putting together your Faculty: Based on the course you are in, having a faculty that complements that course is essential, wherein not just credentials matter but they must enable students to view the larger picture and work towards an analytical learning method. Moreover, apart from the regular faculty, a strong group of visiting faculty is also important. Be it industry stakeholders, alumni, corporate honchos or top professionals in the industry, visiting faculty helps students understand ground

Infrastructure: This is an essential aspect, as a sound infrastructure helps students mould themselves accordingly. Check for relevance of topics mentioned, scope for further specialisation & research, relevance in the international scenario, employability skills, etc. Investing two to five years for higher education is a serious issue and a decision that must not be taken lightly. Students and parents must do their research well in advance, as this helps in focussing on asking the right questions during interviews.
