MENU CARD ON PG 90
A warm welcome aboard! India’s domestic air traffic grew 23.5% in September continuing its two-year run of double digit growth. Nearly 8.23 million passengers flew in September 2016 compared with 6.66 million in September 2015. As per International Air Transport Association (IATA), India will be among the five fastest-growing aviation markets after China and the US by 2035. It also expects India to displace the UK as the third largest aviation market by 2026. During September 2016, GoAir maintained its high passenger load factor of 89.4 per cent. It clocked an on time performance of 88 per cent across networks, which is amongst the best in the industry. GoAir flew 6.9 lakh passengers during the month and consolidated its market share. I am glad to inform you that Hyderabad has become the 23rd destination on our network as we commenced operations this October. This latest addition to GoAir network reflects our phase of growth with a focus on scaling up operations gradually in the coming weeks, while strengthening the value proposition to suit customer demand. In the upcoming winter schedule, we are connecting Mumbai-Port Blair, Kolkata-Bagdogra/Lucknow and Chennai-Kolkata with new flights. Additional frequencies are also being added in routes of Bengaluru-Goa and Delhi-Ranchi/Lucknow. This will give our smart flyers additional flexibility to travel at their preferred time. With the commencement of the festive season, a special inflight menu has been introduced across our network. Our Smart Flyers can also pre-book their meals through our website and savor the choice of specially crafted festive delicacies. Please stay tuned to our website and social media channels for exciting offers and promotions. I wish you a very pleasant flight. We look forward to serving you again.

he call of the open road is a joy the beating heart can barely ignore. To escape the bustle of the capital and to enjoy a drive zipping past endless fields and plains, forests and changing landscapes, is a temptation few can resist. One of the benefits of being in Delhi is that it’s easy to slip away to the Himalayan towns more
frequently. There’s nothing like stopping at wayside dhabas for fresh, piping hot aloo parathas to quell any hunger pangs, or stop at scenic spots for that mandatory selfie. To explore the cities en route and their history, the drive can be stretched to three days, taking a detour to explore the city of Amritsar.

Leaving Delhi in the wee hours of the morning provides you a luxury of driving on relatively traffic-free roads. On NH-1, the first stop is Panipat or Panduprastha, founded by the legendary Pandavas of the epic Mahabharata fame. Pages from history come alive as you conjure images of charging elephants and soldiers swishing swords. Three wars took place here between 1526 and 1761 that changed the fate of our country. Enter the city through its famed Salarjung Gate and visit the 700-yearold Dargah of Abu Ali Shah Qalandar Kala, the Sufi saint. From here, move to the outskirts of Panipat towards Kala Amb, meaning ‘black mango’ derived from a mango tree believed to have turned black due to the gruesome bloodshed that happened here. There is also a mural commemorating the First Battle of Panipat, a spot now cloaked in silence and serenity. Also visit the Tomb of Ibrahim Lodhi and Kabuli Bagh with its lush garden, tank and mosque, named after Babur’s wife Mussammat Kabuli Begum, built to commemorate Babur’s victory over Ibrahim Lodhi. Next stop is Karnal, founded by Karna, yet another legend associated with the Mahabharata. The city that came out of obscurity in 1739, with the victory of Nadir Shah over Mohammad Shah. a saint who is believed to have rescued a Brahmin girl from the clutches of a Hindu king in a battle, and Gurudwara Manji Sahib that commemorates the meeting of Qalander Shah and Guru Nanak, are some of the places to visit. He was supposedly the spiritual guru of Dara Shikoh, the Mughal prince and son of Shah Jehan. An ASI-declared heritage monument, its expansive precincts with several structures look regal even in ruins.
Bhishma Kund where Arjuna is believed to have shot an arrow towards the earth to quench the thirst of Bhishma, the Brahma Sarovar where pilgrims throng to have a holy dip during Somvati Amavasya, Jyotisar – Kurukshetra’s most revered site, housing the Vat or Banyan tree under which Lord Krishna is believed to have delivered the message of the Bhagvad Gita to Arjun, the Sthaneshwar Mandir where the Pandavas prayed to Shiva and sought his blessings for victory in the Battle of Mahabharat, and the Sannihit Sarovar considered the holy abode of Vishnu, are some other places one can visit. On the highway between Kurukshetra and Ambala, make a brief halt at the Temple of Markandeya. In Ambala city, visit Manji Sahib and Panjokhra Sahib Gurudwaras, St Paul’s Church, the city’s oldest church that now lies in ruins due to bombings during the Indo-Pak war of 1965. Enter Amritsar as the first rays of the rising star douses the dome of Harmandir Sahib in its pastel glow. The chorus singing of kirtans is soothing to the senses and despite the continuous flow of pilgrims, there is a kind of tranquility that can best be described as a spiritual feeling defying description. Pay obeisance to the Holy Granth, partake of the prasad and walk through the city’s bustling and colourful lanes. A few hundred meters from the Golden Temple, is the ground of Jallianwala Bagh, a silent ode to hundreds of innocent lives lost to the gunfire of General Dyer on 13 April 1919. The now-serene area, is a tragic reminder of the massacre when hapless victims jumped to their deaths into the well which is situated in a corner of the well manicured garden. A visit to Durgiana Temple – the Golden Temple-look-alike and Dogri War Memorial in the outskirts of Amritsar is a must, while heading towards Bhakra Nangal. DHANUSHKODI, TAMIL NADU Situated in a ghost town, Dhanushkodi Beach narrates the tale of a fateful night when the gushing waves wrapped all its assets and took everything along. Hence, within fraction of a second, this once bubbling town was converted into a deserted island. At present, this beach stands desolate, isolated from all, recalling memories of its golden past when it used to be a bustling fishing hamlet! There was a jetty from where continuous ferry services for passengers and goods, were available between Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Also there were many shops, schools, post offices, customs and port offices and a railway station that made this town alive. As you start walking a little further, you can see ruins of railway tracks, offices, hospitals and church. These ruins bespeak volumes of the tales of destruction caused by the cyclone of 1964, that ravaged this tiny hamlet, turning it into a ghost town.
This beach can be accessed by fourwheeled drive vans that offer a bumpy safari of around 10 km from Mukundarayar Chathiram (located in Rameswaram/ Pamban Dweep on NH-49). A surreal landscape existing here with ruined railway tracks, weather-worn boats and marshes, is sure to give you goosebumps. Also, the confluence of the wild waters of the Indian Ocean and the calmer waters of the Bay of Bengal at Land’s End makes for a mesmerising view. According to legends, Lord Rama built the all-famous Rama Setu (Adam’s Bridge) to Lanka, 30-km from this point. On your way back, vans stop at the small temple which enshrines a porous rock (probably volcanic pumice) and this is believed to be a relic from Rama’s floating bridge.

When the nose ring of goddess misled ships A 3,000-year-old temple of Devi Kanyakumari is situated near Kanyakumari beach, and is dedicated to Goddess Devi Kanyakumari. Here, the Devi’s image is made up of blue stone. Her idol faces the East and her nose ring is set with rubies that shone so bright, they could be seen from a great distance at night. In the past, many ships out at sea, mistook the brightness as the light emitting from the lighthouse and hit against the perilous rocks. Thus, the eastern side gate of the Kumari Amman Temple is kept closed and the entrance to the temple could be made only through the northern gate. The eastern gate is opened on some festivals, when the deity is taken out for the ceremonial bath.

Chowmahalla Palace. It was a great way to explore old Hyderabad beyond Charminar. Hyderabad was ruled by Qutb Shahi, Mughals and Asaf Jahi rulers. The past 400 years have etched the city with many architectural marvels and cultural vibrancy, much of which still exist to this date.
THE HISTORIC FACT The walk commenced at Charminar at 7.30 am. The participants admired the stucco decorations leisurely, meanwhile absorbing the details shared by the guide. The balustrades and balconies offered unique views of the still sleepy market and other heritage buildings below. Often called the Arc de Triomphe of the East, it was completed in 1591 CE. Though there are many versions, the most accepted story behind its construction is an interesting one. Not many know that Charminar is also a mosque. Mohammed Quli Qutub Shahi from the Qutub Shahi dynasty, used to pray at this spot for the eradication of deadly plague that had gripped the city. He built the monument in commemoration of the end of the menace. The four famous clocks in each direction were added in 1889. To the west of Charminar is the kilometer-long Laad Bazaar. During peak hours, you will see many carts and shops selling bangles in Laad bazaar and beyond. Literal meaning of laad is lacquer, the material used to make bangles. Artificial diamonds and colourful stones are often studded on it to give a glossy look. The shops here also sell sarees, itra (perfumes), jewellery, Kalamkari paintings,

silverware and even wedding items. The many old houses atop the shops are a tell tale sign that this market has existed since ancient times. Some of the old buildings have a wooden exterior, with paints peeling off, adding to its antique aura. The bangles made in the many workshops here are also exported to a number of Middle East countries and is also a hit with locals, foreigners and celebrities who visit here. Somewhere on the left is Julukhana Kaman. Now camouflaged by the unorganised shops, this massive gate once served as one of the main entrances to the Chowmahalla Palace.
THE WONDER ZONE The Mecca Masjid nearby is an architectural wonder. With a capacity to host 10,000 pilgrims at a time, it
Architectural wonders and important trade activities near Mehboob Chowk makes it one of the most important landmarks in Old Hyderabad. is not only the largest mosque in Hyderabad but also counts itself as one of the largest mosques in India. Built between 1614 to 1693, the construction was completed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Named after the Grand Mosque in Mecca, it is said that the soil for bricks used in its construction were actually sourced from Mecca. Mehboob Chowk is always buzzing with activities. Even early morning, its streets are full of people. The closed shops and houses speak volumes. The early morning visit helped in observing minute details which is not possible once the streets come alive with shoppers, sellers, tourists and locals going about their daily routine. Mehboob Chowk Clock Tower is nearby and so is the century-old Moti Mahal, once the palace of the Nizam. Moti Mahal, displaying European architectural style was built in 1880. A garden surrounds the
five-storied clock tower, which was built in 1892 by Asman Jah, the erstwhile Prime Minister of Hyderabad. Built in Turkish style, it has 4 clocks facing each direction. The many decorative stuccos add to its beauty. Such architectural wonders and important trade activities in this area makes Mehboob Chowk one of the most important landmarks in Old Hyderabad.
THE GLORIOUS PAST The next stop was Khursheed Jah Baradari. It was built during 1880-1890. It was the residence of Nawab Khursheed Jah Paigah, the maternal grandson of third Nizam of Hyderabad. In its open ground, once stood ponds and gardens. Huge windows make their presence felt on either sides of the eight columns built in the middle. Now in a dilapidated state, the Baradari, in its heyday was once decorated with the finest chandeliers, furnishings, paintings, the works!

Your association with Masterchef India is long. How do you think the show has changed India’s perspective towards food and chefs? I think today’s food scene of India is dramatically changed. Thanks to shows like MasterChef, the viewer is eating out a lot, travelling a lot, experimenting a lot, has more knowledge than what he knew 10 years ago. I think the impact of the show is very significant.

Tell us something about the new season of MasterChef India. I think we have grown together with our viewers. The markets, the information, the cookbooks, the chef’s influence and the mind of home cooks have evolved with time. There is so much more global influences and yet much deeper cuisines and regional research on the show. Sometimes we will bring something new in the challenge and sometimes a very ancient cooking technique or dish becomes our inspiration. We also have contestants from Dubai, New Jersey, San Francisco, London and lot of Indian cities. I am sure this season will change the way cooking is perceived in our society.
How is your chemistry with Chef Kunal Kapur and Zorawar Kalra on set and otherwise? Are you in touch with ex judge Sanjeev Kapoor? Chef Sanjeev Kapoor will always be my mentor and guide. Any time I need information or research or clarity, I pick up my phone and call him. He is my lifeline in so many ways. Kunal is like my younger brother, we have both grown on the show together and appreciate the influence of the platform mutually. He has a heart of gold. I have been inspired by Mr Jiggs Kalra all my life, and Zorawar is not only continuing the legacy but he has also taken it forward in the most sophisticated and honourable way. We all think-breathelive food and on this stage we all decide everything together, mutually and equally. Tell us something about your kitchen art museum. The museum is dedicated to my father (who bought me my first tandoor). It will be one-of-a-kind Kitchen Arts Museum. It’s all about teaching history and our transformation through utensils. I think I went to America at the right time. India was rising and so was the interest in India, as the American food scene was becoming more Indian flavoured. Chef Vikas Khanna with fellow judges on MasterChef India Season 5 Zorawar Kalra, Restaurateur (left) and Chef Kunal Kapoor (right)
A Chef and a Poet I have always loved poetry. My grandfather loved Mirza Ghalib and Rumi and I inherited it from him. My poems are mostly about food, kitchens, memories, home, passion, struggle and hope. I would like to share one titled Universe in the Kitchen! My heart sighs to see rainbow colored flower fields And the sweet-distinct aroma that every flower yields Today I caught the sunlight sleeping on an herb leaf Peacefully nourishing it with affection, full of belief Infinite little dew are resting on the blossoming land Are we too young to know the power of Nature’s hand? Lullaby that birds sing when they are slowly descending Over the orchards that are ripening with music unending Every morsel is intoxicated with the warm winter Sun The mysterious ways these cycles work has just begun Skin of the fruits just feels like the best quality faience Connection of nature to ingredients is like first romance Every creation is so different, so special and so unique
Your journey in America has been inspiring. What is your biggest takeaway? Dignity of labour. That was truly one of my first observations. I worked as a dish washer and the American at the bar was a son of a billionaire who wanted to make it big on his own. I think I went to America at the right time. India was rising and so was the interest in India. Many Americans were travelling and due to boom in IT industry, many Indians were visiting America. This all helped to create interest in Indian cuisine in the West. I was just standing at the right place and the right time as the American food scene was becoming more Indian flavoured. How does writing help you spread your purpose? I think Americans love literature and their respect for a new kind of work is very high. My book Return to the Rivers was very impactful in spreading the culture of Himalayan Cuisine in the US. Literature is a great part of our legacy.
From cumin to apples to squash to turnip to fenugreek As I bring these creations to my kitchen to cook today It feels that every dish is a part of a Thanksgiving day It takes rains, light, soil, seasons, time and lot of care I bring a part of the Universe in every dish I prepare

Chef Neeraj Rawoot, Executive Chef, The Leela Gurgaon, agrees, “Any finger food or any nibble stuff is incomplete without a dip or the sauce accompanying it. It adds flavour, texture and even moisture to the dish.”
Dips must be delicious, yet, easy to prepare, as these are only an accompaniment and not too much time and effort is required for them. Just a bit of chopping, mixing, roasting and tempering is all that one must have to do for a dip.
BASE IS IMPORTANT Cheese, sour cream, yoghurt, tomatoes, vegetables, beans and chickpeas, are typical base ingredients for delectable dips. These are selected to give a moist and creamy texture, characteristic of

a dip. Of course herbs, caramelised onions, garlic, lemon juice, nuts and olive oil, are added to enhance the flavour quotient. Chef Sareen cautions, “Fresh produce and balance of flavours are key as they add character to the dip.” Feta cheese, goat cheese, Parmesan and cream cheese are preferred owing to their textures. Today, however, instead of regular yoghurt, Greek yoghurt is used because of its healthy nature and creamy texture.

without these if the main ingredient has good moisture content. For example, a mole made out of avocado does not require any base. You can go berserk with additives to the base, to regulate the spice, crunch, texture, aroma. FUN WITH FRUITS & VEGGIES Vegetables like tomatoes, jalapenos, eggplant, spinach, pumpkin and beetroot, lend themselves perfectly for dips. These are sometimes pureed after being boiled, or even added raw. However, to get a unique flavour, try roasting the vegetables, before combining them with other ingredients. Harissa, the spicy and aromatic chilli dip with smoked peppers, olive oil, tomatoes, garlic and other spices, staple in North African and Middle Eastern cooking, is gaining popularity in India too. Similarly, the avocado based guacamole is now being given exotic flavour twists by chefs by adding fruits like pineapple, pomegranate and mango, or even edamame, kale and broccoli. With its psychedelic colour, a beet dip is fun to serve with white and pale green vegetables like cauliflower and fennel. A little bit of honey and vinegar amps up the beet flavour. A spinach and white bean dip can prove to be equally exciting. Spinach combines well with cheese to make a luscious dip. Creamy beans and sundried tomatoes offer the perfect texture and flavour combo in a dip. avocado, apples and plums, are the perfect choice for dips. A strawberry rhubarb dip is innovative, as is a zesty orange cream dip. At Park Hyatt Goa, a ripe pineapple is baked and blended with fresh lime and pink salt to make a smoky and sweetish dip.
MEATY DIPS Are dips only vegetarian? Tuna with capers, olives and lemon; smoked salmon dip; Blue cheese, bacon and spinach dip, are some of the exciting non-vegetarian dips. Seafood like prawns and crabs, meats like bacon, chicken, are ingredients that can be paired with others to make a smooth, creamy dip. Chef Rawoot, however, prefers non-smooth, rustic dips. He thus recommends a Pulled Crab Claw meat mixed with sour cream, cracked pepper, onion chives accompanied with fresh Romaine hearts.
HEALTHY OPTIONS Today, with people becoming health conscious, many ingredients are being replaced in dips to give them a healthy twist. Replacing sour cream with Lebanese cheese lebneh, reduces the fat content; using drained Greek yoghurt makes the dip even healthier.

Cream cheese, vanilla extract, orange zest, powdered sugar, orange juice and cream, combine to make a tasty sweet dip. Greek yoghurt, peanut butter, honey and cinnamon, make a creamy and appetising dip. Adults opt for a dip made with cocoa powder, honey, vanilla extract and Greek yoghurt. Chef Rajinder Sareen of Park Hyatt Goa, sums up, “When creating a new dip, one must keep in mind the cuisine it will be paired with and the nature of the dish. For example, if using Indian cuisine as a base, then the seasoning should have similar elements too.”
Greek yoghurt is rich in iodine. Iodine is important for proper thyroid function, which is essential for healthy metabolism.
Avocados are loaded with minerals and vitamins, making it extremely nutritious.
Guacamole is an avocado-based dip, traditionally made by mashing ripe avocados with salt. Other recipes call for inclusion of tomatoes, coriander, lemon, etc.

Marvels of
architecture &
design In the history of humankind, the quest for water led to settlements near coasts, rivers and lakes and to the creation of reservoirs to harvest and store water for daily needs and to tide over times of scarcity. Brinda Gill
W
ells dug into the earth offered access to water from the natural water table or spring waters, and filled with rainwater, providing succour in drier months. Over time, stepwells - wells with a flight of steps to access the water - came to be built. As the water level dipped in summer, a person would walk down a few steps to reach the lower water level, and in the post monsoon months, the water would be more accessible. Stepwells are seen in different parts of India, predominant in the drier regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan, where rainfall is limited to monsoon, long spells of dry months and sparse vegetation necessitated the building of reservoirs for storing water. These stepwells are known by different names - such as baori and baoli in Rajasthan and north India, vav in Gujarat and pushkarini in Karnataka
VARIETY IS KEY Over time, stepwells have evolved into unusual, beautiful and vast underground monuments.
There are interesting variations in stepwells such as in the presence of a temple and religious iconography; their form in terms of shape; number of entrances and staircases; design of staircases (as one long flight with landings or a series of short flights in a geometric pattern); being large and completely open to sky appearing more like ponds or tanks and others being covered in parts; the number of levels; and the degree of ornamentation. Outside the well, the temperatures may be searing, with little shade from vegetation to offer respite from the heat. Yet, within the confines of the stepwell, it was cool, with shaded spaces to relax, and water for drinking. Thus, stepwells became a welcome retreat for women who came to collect water, for travellers and traders, pilgrims and soldiers. Overtime, the commissioning of a stepwell was regarded as a meritorious act as it was considered blessed by the presence of deities and life-giving water. In recent decades, the use of stepped wells has reduced. Some continue to be visited as a water source, many for their sheer beauty, some have been restored, while some lie neglected.

AGRASEN KI BAOLI, DELHI
In a city that traces its origin to ancient times, and one that is dotted with historic monuments, are many wonderful structures that speak of times past. One of the most charming surprises of New Delhi, is Agrasen ki Baoli, located in a narrow lane off Old Hailey Road, near Connaught Place. Walking along the quiet street, one gets an experience of making a discovery as the rectangular stone baoli unexpectedly comes into view. Eighty metres long and 15 metres wide, with a long flight of steps going down to the water level that are flanked by high stone walls with arched niches, the baoli offers a quiet spot in the heart of the capital. With 103 steps, it consists of three levels. It is believed to have been built by Raja Agrasen, who lived at the time of the Mahabharata; its extant architectural style conveys that it probably underwent restoration during the 14th or 15th century CE. Its history, elegance and state of preservation has it credited as one of the finest baolis in the city.

CHAND BAORI, ABHANERI, NEAR JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN
Be prepared to be dazzled by a symphony of geometry, symmetry, linearity and more as you glimpse the mesmerising Chand Baori! Located about 80 km from Jaipur, in front of the Harshat Mata temple dedicated to the goddess of joy, dated to 7-8 th century CE, the large open air baori takes one’s breath away with its play of lines! For it has a fantastic series of landings and double flights of steps along three sides of the baori till the water level; the fourth side has spaces for resting, as does the top-most level. The baori’s details are fantastic: 3,500 steps, descending 20 metres, down thirteen levels... making it one of India’s largest and deepest baori. The baori takes its name from its builder. It was built by King Chanda (8-9 th century CE) and served as a precious source of water and a place for meeting and resting. Its vast dimensions must have caught ample rainwater, gushing down its stonewalls, that added to the ground water ensuring a good water supply for the long dry months.

RANI NI VAV, PATAN, GUJARAT
In a state dotted with a spectrum of stepwells, Rani ni Vav or the Queen’s Stepwell stands out for its magnificence! It was built by Queen Udayamati in the 11th century; at that time Patan was a capital city graced with architecture patronised by the royals. Rani ni Vav is an elaborate complex of seven storeys with beautifully carved columns, brackets and beams. Its walls are lavishly embellished with exquisite sculptures of Lord Vishnu and his incarnations, deities, apsaras,

PUSHKARNI, HAMPI, KARNATAKA
Every stone, at the spectacular erstwhile kingdom of Vijayanagara (1336-1646) at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, from its massive boulder-strewn landscape to its majestic stone architecture and galaxy of monuments, seems to whisper history. Amidst its temples, palaces, bazaars, gateways, stone chariot, stables and more are pushkarinis or sacred stepped tanks built adjoining temples for rituals that were supplied by water, flowing through channels, from the Tungabhadra River. The Krishna temple has an atmospheric pushkarini that captures the aura of Hampi in its setting and construction of stone. It is a serene tank, in an awesome setting, with a pillared arcade on the sides, and steps going down to the water’s edge. In the heart of the shimmering waters is a small structure, with four corner columns and a superstructure, where the idol of the deity would be placed during festivals.

The sculptural beauty, scale of the stepwell, the play of light, and cool deep environs... make the stepwell a magical subterranean world. It is 64 mt long, 20 mt wide and 27 mt deep. It was flooded by the waters of the Saraswati River and silted over for centuries, yet restoration in the mid-1980s rescued it from the sands of time, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Is life simpler without 4 & 8: The other side of the story Individually every number has its massive merits but if it doesn’t get the support of your fadic/destiny number it cannot do much for you. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations, but if you are still struggling and have faced certain problems you should try and understand your state of energies and detangle the web, to create a free path for your future. “A bright star has its own energy, but lighting a lamp in the dark is much more meaningful.” We all are a mix of many numbers, their combinations play us differently and affects us differently. We have to empower these combinations in our fortune, to achieve what is extraordinary, which makes us exemplary individuals, that help themselves and in addition help their families, society, help someone in need who looks unto you. My advice “Knowledge empowers you, and there is nothing more powerful than to understand yourself, your potentials, what holds you back, what drives you forward.” I provide you this knowledge about yourself, though numerology. For the uninitiated, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) defines Demographic dividend, as the economic growth potential that can result from shifts in a population’s age structure, mainly when the share of the working-age population is larger than the non-working-age share of the population. A country with both
Over 600 million people in India, out of a total population of 1.28 billion are below the age of 25 years. But, according to experts, only 10 percent of the Indian workforce is in the organised sector; miniscule working population has any vocational training, compared to the average of 60 to 70 percent in developed countries. Women form less than 20 percent of the workforce and skill set of passing out graduates is not relevant to present day needs of their respective industries. In the words of Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India, “We have an abundance of creative, restless and inquisitive minds. In the networked environment of today, we need the power of youth to realise the full potential of an aspirational India… India may have lagged behind in some high tech innovations but when it comes to developing solutions to everyday problems, we have made a difference.” The present government being led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target to provide skill training to 40.02 crore people by 2022. Naturally, the success of ‘Make in India’ campaign that promises to make India a truly global manufacturing hub and worldclass business destination will be based on the ability to deliver adequately equipped and trained manpower to run businesses manufacturing the state-of-the-art zeroeffect and zero-defect produce for the global markets. But, if only targets were good enough, in 2011 the then government had set a target of training 500 million skilled workers by 2022 taking into account the existing vocational training facilities and realistic demand for skilled workers in the country, as per the then Skills Policy.
FOCUSSING EDUCATION As the government builds industrial corridors, it needs to recognise that it is the classrooms where quality manpower workforce will be created. By giving due emphasis on relevant skills, India can be developed into an attractive business destination and a global powerhouse of skilled workers. The next decade is crucial to take concrete steps in this direction to be able to really reap the demographic dividend. Fortunately, Arun Jaitley, Union Minister for Finance, inaugurating the first ever India International Tourism Investment Summit in New Delhi, assured that the present government is cautious of the earlier episodes of job-less economic growth and all measures will be taken to ensure that this time it is job-enabled economic development. There are two areas of focus that emerge here. Firstly, the organised sector, which needs more industry exposure to improve employability of graduates. Secondly, the unorganised sector, where the maximum potential lies in a country exploding with affordable manpower. India’s education system has long been criticised for its lack of vocational training. According to a report by FICCI, India has around 5.5 million people enrolled in vocational courses, while the number stands at 90 million in China.
WHAT ACADEMIA THINKS At Hero MindMine Summit held recently, a distinguished panel consisting of Pramath Raj Sinha, Founder, Ashoka University; T.V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman, Manipal Global Education; Mihir J Doshi, Managing Director & Country CEO, Credit Suisse, India; Narayanan Ramaswamy, Partner & National Lead for Education, KPMG India and Rajendra Srivastava, Dean, ISB, pondered over India’s preparedness to serve the education needs of its population through indigenous stateof-the-art global educational institutes that could produce the best manpower to ensure that India’s demographic dividend doesn’t turn out to be a demographic disaster. Here, Sinha prompted that the number of students pursuing higher studies abroad continues to surge globally. The growth is considerably high in India, as the country is the second largest contributor globally, in terms of sending its students abroad for studies, after China. Indian students going overseas to study increased 256 per cent from 53,266 in 2000 to 189,629 in 2009. The total current (2014-15) number of Indian students going abroad annually for higher studies is estimated to be in the range of 250,000 – 300,000. While the challenge is massive, Pai added that unless education is made available to all, India may near a situation that is termed as ‘demographic disaster’. Joshi also insisted on bringing focus on job creation, while Ramaswamy added that India should develop a new Ivy League based of its own needs. Experts also underscore the need to reform the existing educational infrastructure to make sure that India puts forth the best case-study of a nation that reaped maximum advantage of the burst in productivity led by its working population, while taking care of its dependent population as well.

About me: My dream is to contribute fully in making the Indian aviation story a global success. Aviation is my passion as it evokes a sense of freedom and enables me to expand my horizon. What makes me happy: I believe happiness is just a pursuit when I can make the most of the present time. My inspiration: I’m a self-motivated person, but my parents have stood by me through all the ups and downs of life. My passion: Freedom with responsibility My motto in life: Never take time for granted. Whatever the current phase is – good or bad times, it is bound to change. GoAir to me is: Just like a library. Open the door to divinity ! Exquisite Pooja Doors from Poompuhar
TESTIMONIAL I was impressed with the excellent handicrafts compositions displayed by Poompuhar at the T3 & T4 international terminals of Chennai Airport. Hence I decided to approach them for my dream pooja door, and was struck by their professionalism and enthusiasm, and decided to go ahead! The door was done in record time, fully teak, traditional and exceptionally appealing to my conservative family. I was totally bowled over by this experience ! In honour and gratitude to their fantastic service, I am posting this testimonial here. Dr. Hemashree Rajesh, Singapore
