Climate - Cons C ious e nvironmental stewardship

Global climate change, with rising temperatures and extreme rainfall, poses a significant challenge, impacting ecosystems from the Arctic to forests. Iconic species like polar bears face threats, while deforestation worsens water scarcity and humanwildlife conflicts. To tackle these pressing issues, it is imperative to prioritise spreading awareness, especially among children who represent the future guardians of environmental stewardship. Dr Manimekalai Mohan, the Founder of SSVM Group of Institutions shares her insight through this conversation regarding climate change, empowering individuals to become proactive agents of change in safeguarding our planet's future.

how do your group of schools contribute to combating climate change through their sustainable practices?

At SSVM Group of Institutions, sustainability permeates every aspect of our operations, reflecting our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. Solar panels, installed in our campuses within permitted limits, power our electricity needs, while since 2005, they've been the sole source of hot water for our residential students, reducing our carbon footprint. We encourage afforestation efforts, aimed at maximising tree cover and fostering a greener ecosystem. We embrace transportation innovations with

battery-powered and CNG vehicles, prioritising emission reduction. Employing bio-septic tanks and white-painted roofs epitomise our commitment to sustainable water and energy management. Additionally, agroforestry practices and rainwater harvesting underscore our dedication to responsible land use and water conservation. These initiatives inspire students and communities alike to adopt sustainable lifestyles, embodying our proactive stance towards a greener future.

what inspired ssvm Group of institutions to prioritise rainwater harvesting and groundwater conservation?

Our initiatives at SSVM Group of Institutions are deeply rooted in the wisdom of visionary leaders like Jamsetji Tata and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who advocated for sustainable development. Dr Kalam's emphasis on practical solutions, such as artificial rainwater tanks, motivated us to implement rainwater harvesting practices. Recognising the importance of groundwater conservation, we have constructed

13 small tanks in our agri lands to recharge groundwater, aligning with our mission to foster environmental responsibility and resilience.

how is your opinion on over-extraction of groundwater? what measures can communities take to mitigate the negative impacts of groundwater depletion?

The over-extraction of groundwater poses severe threats to ecosystems and biodiversity, leading to habitat degradation and compromised water quality. Sustainable groundwater management practices are essential for protecting vital ecosystems and preserving biodiversity. Communities can mitigate the negative impacts by adopting water conservation practices, such as rainwater harvesting and efficient irrigation techniques. Additionally, promoting water reuse and recycling, along with implementing regulations to limit groundwater extraction, can stabilise groundwater levels. Community-driven initiatives like constructing recharge wells and restoring natural water bodies further contribute to sustainable groundwater management, ensuring water availability for future generations.

how can educational institutions inspire future generations to become environmental stewards?

Educational institutions play a crucial role in inspiring future generations to become environmental stewards. Integrating sustainability into curriculum and campus operations fosters environmental awareness and empowers students. Handson learning through eco-clubs and sustainability projects deepens understanding, while partnerships with local communities enable students to engage in environmental conservation and community impact. Through these efforts, educational institutions can nurture a generation of environmentally conscious leaders committed to creating a sustainable future.

Sunita Srivastava, Vice President- Special Projects

The opportunity to be at the forefront of a new venture like was what excited me when I joined IndiGo in 2005. Since then, I've been a part of many firsts, from spearheading international operations to regional flights. From Flight Operations start-up team to Vice President of Special P rojects, I've grown through challenges and experiences, helping me realise my potential. I'm eager to continue pushing boundaries and achieving new milestones together.

I have always been fascinated with machines, and for me, the aircraft was a marvel that kept me enthralled. In 2006, when I joined IndiGo as a Trainee AM E, I delved deeper into the intricacies of an aircraft . In these 17 years, nothing else gives me more joy than seeing a plane take off and land safely. Today, as an Associate Director of Maintenance, I feel proud and honoured to be a part of an organisation that continues to empower me everyday.

GI- A TAG FOR INDIAN HERITAGE

India is a country that is widely known for its diverse cultures, traditions, and craftsmanship. It is renowned for its unique and exquisite traditional products. From the aromatic Darjeeling tea to the mesmerizing Kancheepuram silk sarees and the delectable Kashmir saffron, these products reflect the distinct skills and heritage of the communities that produce them. These products are protected by geographical indications (GIs), an international system for their safeguarding formulated under the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), a World Trade Organization agreement. The TRIPS agreement establishes minimum standards for the protection and preservation of GIs. 1

The Government of India introduced the Geographical Indication (GI) tag system in 1999, in compliance with the TRIPS agreement, to promote and protect traditional products.

A GI tag is a special sign used on certain products to indicate that they originate from a specific geographical location and possess qualities or characteristics that are exclusively attributable to that place of origin. These tags serve as a valuable tool for protecting the reputation and distinctiveness of products, preventing unauthorized use, and promoting fair competition in the market. India has a vast array of GI-tagged products, including natural, agricultural, handicraft and manufactured goods.

The Intellectual Property of India, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade's (DPIIT) website lists 547 registered GI tags,2 spread across various states and territories. The top-performing states in India, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra, have captured almost 50% of the total GI registrations. GI tags offer a multitude of benefits to both producers and consumers.3

For producers, GI tags provide a unique selling proposition, enabling them to differentiate their products and command premium prices. Additionally, GI tags foster a sense of community pride and promote traditional production methods, ensuring the preservation of local craftsmanship and heritage. For consumers, GI tags serve as a guarantee of authenticity and quality.

Consumers can be confident that products bearing GI tags possess the distinctive characteristics associated with their geographical origin, ensuring a consistent and superior consumer experience. The GI tag for Darjeeling tea has helped increase the export of this product, benefiting the local tea growers and traders. Similarly, the GI tag for Nagpur oranges has helped in creating a brand identity for this product, leading to increased demand and higher revenue for the farmers. The GI tag system has also been successful in curbing the sale of counterfeit products. For instance, the GI tag for Banaras silk has helped in reducing the sale of fake Banaras sarees, which were earlier being sold in large numbers. The tag has also helped in creating awareness among consumers about the authenticity of the product and the importance of supporting local artisans and industries.4

TALKING POINT

Few GI products at a glance in your tourist destinations:

The Pashmina is a luxurious shawl made from the wool of a particular type of goat called the ‘Changthangi’ goat or Capra Hircus, which is native to Kashmir. These goats have developed a special kind of wool to resist extremely low temperatures that can fall as low as -40 degree Celsius in some parts of Kashmir during the winters. In spring, when the temperature rises, the goats shed their wool, which is then used in the making of Pashmina. The word Pashmina is derived from the Persian word ‘pashm’, which means soft wool. Pashmina Shawls are synonymous with opulence, comfort, and sophistication, and are highly coveted by women all over the world.6

Phulkari, an exquisite form of embroidery using beautiful thread work, has withstood the test of time and can now be found on practically anything imaginable. It represents the finest expression of floral grandeur on fabric. The art of storytelling in rural India takes many forms and phulkari embroidery, originating from Punjab, has played a significant role not only in history but also in both classic and contemporary fashion. This embroidery involves a seamless combination of the buttonhole stitch, running stitch, darn stitch and cluster stitches. The cloth used is usually homespun and dyed, making it durable and eliminating the need for a frame to stretch the fabric while

embroidering. Some patterns are so elaborate that the color of the base cloth becomes invisible. In the past, women in Punjabi villages would use silken thread to embroider on handspun fabric to commemorate births and weddings and it was worn during auspicious occasions. However, with the social and economic changes in the lifestyle of Punjabis, women artisans have introduced innovations in design and base fabric, thereby enhancing the marketability of the Phulkari craft.5

Tripura Pineapple is a significant fruit crop in India and ranks sixth in terms of total world production share. In India, the crop is grown widely, with more than eight percent of the total production coming from the country. Pineapple is especially crucial for Tripura, where it serves as one of the most important cash crops. Though the fruit is grown in almost all districts of the state, it is mainly cultivated in West Tripura and North Tripura districts. The agroclimatic conditions of the region are highly suitable for growing the fruit. Many farmers in the area depend on pineapple for their livelihood. The most popular variety of pineapple grown in Tripura is the "Queen" and "Kew." The "Queen" variety has been awarded a GI tag and is considered the best quality of pineapple in the world. In 2018, President Ramnath Kovind declared Tripura's "Queen" pineapple as the "state fruit."7

C oveted and conquered, battle-scarred yet breathtaking, some of India’s most historically significant forts are well off the beaten track. Marking International Day For Monuments and Sites, here are some formidable yet less-visited bastions.

Connect: Fly IndiGo to Khajuraho.

With a riveting history that goes back centuries, Kalinjar is mentioned in the Vedas and the Mahabharata as a place for pilgrimage. Legends associate the waters of Kot Tirth within the fort with healing powers. It is said it was here that Lord Shiva drank the poison that came out after churning the sea.

The windswept hilltop fort exemplifies grand architectural taste. Its serpentine, battlemented walls conceal a rich tapestry of Indian history going back two millennia. The fort had turned back the army of Mahmud Ghaznavi, while Sher Shah Suri was killed while laying siege to Kalinjar. Said to have been built by the Chandelas, it was held successively by various dynasties. As a result, the fort is filled with remains of palaces, pavilions, shrines, stepped tanks and more than anything else, inscriptions, which allow forgotten rulers to tell their stories in their own words.

The ancient Neelkanth Temple is a major attraction. It has a Shiva lingam in blue stone, apart from a huge 18-arm statue.

Kalinjar was the military stronghold of the Chandela dynasty, whose finest legacy is a mere 100 km away in Madhya Pradesh - the famed Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A wider Chandela circuit includes Ajaygarh, Kalinjar’s twin fort, and the temples of Mahoba, famed for its paan (betel leaf).

CHITRADURGA, Karnataka

An invincible fort that was built as per Arthashastra, one of the world’s earliest treatises on political thought and social order, Chitradurga has withstood the ravages of time and enemies for centuries. With seven concentric ramparts, the fort stands as a testimony to the skills of various dynasties, including the Nayakas and the Hoysalas. Built by leveraging the dramatic rocky terrain, the fort is said to be one of the strongest in the region. One of the most moving stories about the fort is connected to a secret entrance. It is said that in the 18th century, when Hyder Ali, father of Tipu Sultan, laid siege to the fort, his men found a secret way in. A woman named Obavva spotted Hyder’s force trying to sneak in. She attacked them with her pestle (locally called onake). In her honour, the place is called Onake Obavvana Kindi.

USP

The fort originally had 19 main entrances, 38 wicket entrances, 35 portholes and four “invisible” entrances! The best-preserved structures within are temples such as Sampige Siddheshwara, Hidimbeshwara, Ekanathamma, Phalguneshvara, Gopalakrishna, Anjaneya, Subbaraya and Basava. A big piece of bone has been kept in the Hidimbeshwara Temple and is said to be the tooth of demon Hidambasura. Equally interesting is the elaborate water management system.

DON'T MISS

Just outside Chitradurga, is the ancient site Chandravalli, which dates back to the Satavahana period and beyond. Excavations have revealed settlements around 3,000 years old. Around 8 km away from the fort is the Jogimatti Wildlife Sanctuary.

Around 30 km away are the rock-cut Masroor temples, dating back to the early 8th-century. Also nearby are popular tourist destinations like Dharamshala, Mcleodganj, Bir-Billing and the unique art village Andretta. The Katoch rulers were also patrons of art, leading to the establishment of the Pahari (Kangra) school of painting.

KANGRA,Himachal Pradesh

One of the largest in the Himalayas, the Kangra Fort has been a part of myth and history for almost four millennia, with the ancient kingdom finding a mention in the works of Sanskrit scholar Panini as well as the Mahabharata. Reputed to have had 21 deep wells filled with priceless treasures, the fort was attacked innumerable times by the army of several rulers, including the Mughals and the British.

Built atop a hill at the confluence of the Banganga River and a stream on three sides, the majestic fort has withstood the test of time and managed to resist countless attacks. The damage, which attackers could not do, was done in a massive earthquake of 1905.

The Katoch rulers, who controlled the fort, are said to have descended from the Trigarta ruler Susharama Chandra, who played an important role in the Mahabharata’s final conflict. Local lore says that the first Katoch ruler was born from a bead of sweat of Goddess Ambika when she wiped her brow during a battle with the demon Raktbeej.

GINGEE,Tamil Nadu

Think of yourself as the commander of a medieval army attacking Gingee. You penetrate the outer wall and assume the wealth of the place is within reach. And then your force is attacked, not from one but three different directions. The Gingee Fort’s most formidable protection comprises three hills of barren, volcanic rock. Any invading force would have been trapped in this triangle, each hill almost an independent citadel. On the plain between the hills, the seven-storied Kalyana Mahal is a stunning structure, surrounded by barracks, a granary, a mosque and other buildings. Dominating the landscape is the Rajagiri Hill, which can be reached via a trek past sculpted remains, pavilions and shrines. The view is stunning as is the sense of isolation.

USP

Clearly visible are the fortified Krishnagiri and Chakkilidrug hills. Also, visit the Venkataramana Temple and the Ranganatha Temple. Over centuries, Gingee has witnessed the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara rulers, Maratha and British in control. Looking down from Rajagiri, one agrees with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who admired it as one of the most impregnable forts of India. Of the legends associated with Gingee, the most popular is that of a Bundela Rajput commander's heroic son Raja De Singh, who died in a battle against the Nawab of Arcot.

Take Note

T he Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project, located adjacent to the Lothian Island, o n the bank of the Saptamukhi Estuary, is the only crocodile project in West Bengal. Naturally, it has emerged as a sought-after tourist destination in the region, enthralling travellers with its natural beauty.

W hile Bhagabatpur is easily accessible through Namkhana, it can also be reached from Sajnekhali.

The Sundarbans is a wholesome destination offering diverse experiences in nature, adventure, history, and culture.

The jungle is home to one of the world's largest wild tiger populations, with these apex predators swimming long distances between the islands, a behaviour unique to this region. The knotty roots of the mangrove swamps remain unmoved in the tidal mudflats, even as tides take away chunks of land that never return. The remoteness and inaccessibility of the islands and villages contribute to making the Sundarbans a wholesome destination offering diverse experiences in nature, adventure, history, and culture.

While the Sundarbans houses various species such as crocodiles, monitor lizards, fish, Hawksbill turtles, Ganges River dolphins, Olive Ridley turtles, wild boars,

deer, monkeys, snakes, and numerous bird species, the tigers steal the spotlight. The Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project is another attraction.

Notable locations include Kalashdeep, Henry's Island and Netidhopani. Henry's Island offers an interesting mix of beach and mangrove forest. For those interested in mangroves and wilderness, boats lead to Sajnekhali and Sudhanyakhali watch towers, and Dobanki Camp. The journey to Dobanki is particularly thrilling. Quiet time at the watch towers can be rewarding with panoramic views and animal sightings.

Explore the Sundarbans on boats along the river channels.

Eat, Pray and Love in Bali

T he mystical allure of ancient Hindu temples, the colourful local art markets, and the healing power of therapeutic black sands – discover the soul of Bali by venturing off the beaten path.

54 April 2024
Outbound

The Hollywood blockbuster Eat Pray Love may have popularised Bali's quaint rural charm, but there are many more secrets to discover in this Indonesian paradise. Beyond the glamour of the sun, sea and sand in this tropical island, lies a unique side of Bali that’s dotted with ornate temples, resplendent palaces and a vibrant visual arts scene. Most tour companies will show you a side of Bali that includes hip beach clubs in Kuta and Seminyak, Instagram-worthy giant swings, picturesque sunsets by the sea, and the cacophonous monkey forest in Ubud. However, it is worth venturing off the beaten track and discovering Bali’s rustic beauty in the glimmering black sands of the northeastern coast, the tranquil charm of lakeside shrines and the never-ending contours of rice terraces.

FLOATING TEMPLES AND OPULENT PALACES

Considered by many as the most beautiful temple in Bali, the majestic Ulun Danu Beratan is a magical sight, seemingly afloat on the crystalline mirror of the Beratan Lake in the caldera of a dormant volcano. Built over 400 years ago, it is said that the temple rises above a sacred site that is even older. Nestled high up in the Bedugul highlands, the temple is almost always enveloped by a gossamer sheet of mist, giving it a surreal aura. The temple's location also holds historical significance, as the Beratan basin has been an important water source in the region and is at the heart of Subak, the intricate system of traditional irrigation that waters the paddy fields of the island. The nearby lush expanse of the Jatiluwih rice terraces is a worthy reminder of the ancient rice-growing culture, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For a deep dive into Bali's cultural heart, head to Ubud. According to legend, noble families from various parts of the island journeyed to Ubud for rejuvenation. This ancient tradition persists today, attracting individuals from around the globe in search of remedies for both physical and spiritual ailments. Visit Puri Saren Agung or the Ubud Palace, an outstanding example of traditional Balinese architecture replete with beautiful stone carvings of flowers, animals and mythical creatures. Not too far away, the Klungkung Royal Palace in Semarapura is another must-see site, with a gilded, Balinese-style ceiling richly illustrated with religious tales and afterlife events.

What else: Bathing in the springs at the sacred water temple, Tirta Empul, is an unparalleled experience.

KECAK DANCE

One of the most unique cultural experiences in Bali is to watch an enthralling Kecak Dance. The dance draws inspiration from the Hindu epic Ramayana and recounts the story of the abduction of Goddess Sita by Ravana and her subsequent rescue by Lord Rama and his army of monkeys.

The setting of the Kecak performance at the time of sunset, accompanied by the rhythmic chanting of the performers and the evocative music of a traditional gamelan orchestra, culminating in a high-energy fire dance, is sure to transport you to a different world.

If you’re visiting the cliffside temple of Uluwatu, it is a good idea to stay back for their mesmerising Kecak show. Scheduled around sunset every day, the Uluwatu Kecak performance is a powerful combination of Balinese dance, music, and traditional aesthetics.

What else: Kecak dance gets its name from the continuous chanting of “Cak! Cak! Cak!”, which is made to resemble a group of raucous monkeys.

BLACK BEACHES

No visit to Bali is ever complete without visiting its gorgeous beaches. However, sand is more than just white in Bali; it is of different hues. Head to the pristine northeastern shores of Bali, where the sand is shimmery black owing to its volcanic origins. It is believed that Bali’s black sands have healing powers and can cure severe pain and cramps. Bali has plenty of black sand beaches, many of which remain hidden gems. Some of the best ones are Amed Beach, Keramas Beach, and Pemuteran Beach. One of the world’s most famous shipwrecks, the USS Liberty Wreck, lies right off the black sand beach of Tulamben, making it a popular diving spot.

What else: Not very far from Bali, on the northeastern fringe of Komodo Island, is the rosy pink beach of Pantai Merah, featuring a surreal pink shoreline against turquoise blue waters. It is also home to the Komodo dragon, one of the world’s largest lizards.

As you turn around, be sure to gaze at the unfathomable beauty of the island’s volcanic craters because that’s where the history of Bali began millions of years ago.

What else: The best time to hike Mount Batur is from April to September. It is also the best time to experience glorious sunrises from the summit. Sunrise treks are popular but a sunset trek is quieter and equally breathtaking.

The photo titled ‘Mom's Love', depicting a lioness protecting her cub, reminds us that the essence of motherhood transcends species. And love is a universal language that knows no boundaries. Australian celebrity chef Sarah Todd takes us on a culinary tour of Goa, like a true-blue Goan. Words Promita Mukherjee

Goaon my plate

SARAH TODD

Who doesn't like the charm of beach paradise Goa? For decades, not just people from different parts of India, but also from across the world have made Goa their home. There is something about its susegad lifestyle, the beaches, backwaters, stunning sunsets, shacks and colourful markets — that continue to draw people towards it.

MasterChef Australia finalist and celebrity chef Sarah Todd couldn't stay immune to the allure of Goa either. So, when she made India her home, she went ahead and opened her first restaurant — Antares Restaurant and Beach Club — in Vagator in Goa, which she calls a “beautiful land of flavours and sunsets”. But that was a decade back, after which she went on to do a six-part TV series called My Restaurant which aired in 156 countries. Her innovative cooking style majorly includes fresh and local produce, which she blends with her signature flavours. The Le Cordon Bleu alumna picked up her unique cooking style during extensive travels across India, and has collaborated with renowned chefs like Heston Blumenthal and Ranveer Brar.

Todd, a self-professed Indophile, has recently launched another restaurant at Vagator, Goa, the Sanctuary Bar and Kitchen. A beautiful dining venue, comprising both indoor and outdoor seating areas, is built amidst the ruins of a 250-year-old Portuguese bungalow.

Todd's Goa story is all about "a carnival of colours, scents and possibilities," which keeps drawing her back to the tiny state. Her favourite places in Goa? "Spots which are more than just places to me; they’re the flavours of my Goa story, each with its distinct aroma, taste, and texture. Whether you’re feasting on a fish at Vinayak Family Restaurant, watching a sunset at Morjim, or finding culinary inspiration at Mapusa Market, Goa captures your heart, just as it did mine," she says, with a twinkle in her eyes.

67

Chase the sunset

Goa

There are a few beaches in Goa, which have captured Todd's heart. The secluded Butterfly beach, “where I can watch the sun paint the sky in hues of goodbye”, the Galgibaga (Turtle) beach, where she goes for sea turtles and tranquil vibes, and then there are the north Goa twin favourites Morjim and Ashvem. "They are where the sunsets weave golden tapestries over the sea. It’s where I go to blend with the horizon," says Todd.

My love affair with Goa is woven through flavours, sunsets, and those little hidden spots where memories are made."

Culinary Muse

"The chaotic charm of Mapusa Market is where I find my muse among aisles of fresh, local ingredients. It never ceases to inspire my next culinary creation," says Todd. Summers, for Todd, are all about juicy local mangoes and tarty kokum Monsoons unleash a plethora of mushrooms and lush amaranth greens. And what about winter?

"That’s when we get all those hearty Goan root veggies. But let’s not forget the all-year-round heroes: Goan sausage and soft poi bread, plus those unique goodies like Tirphal berries," she adds.

Sarah's top 5

Her latest venture – Sanctuary Bar and Kitchen – nestled among a plethora of greens in an old ruined bungalow, is obviously what occupies most of Todd's heart now. "The menu is a heartfelt ode to the local produce, the distinct seasons of Goa, and the culinary techniques that have always captivated me. It is about the essence of Goa that mirrors the rich biodiversity of the region," she says.

Not far away from Sanctuary is Bomras, where chef Bawmra Jap is cooking up a storm in his restaurant, which grows its own greens. "Bomras is where Burmese cuisine meets Goan zest. Every visit feels like uncovering a new layer of flavour. It’s where the essence of simplicity and sophistication blend seamlessly on your plate," recommends Todd.

Local favourites like Vinayak, Anand and Bombil feature prominently on her list. Her recommendations are: the fish thali at Vinayak, and at Bombil, the bombil fry.

Known for her beauty and willingness to stretch beyond the trappings of lighter Bollywood fare, the actor has managed to carve out a niche by choosing movies that highlight her dramatic skills. Whether it is commercial successes such as Border or Biwi No. 1, or dramatically substantial productions such as Maachis, Hu Tu Tu, Virasat, or Cheeni Kum, her talent has been acclaimed by the masses as well as classes. Her performances have been lauded internationally too in films such as Mira Nair's The Namesake (2006) and Ang Lee's stylish Life of Pi (2012).

For now, Tabu is, in her own words, in "a happy space, in fact, the best phase of life." She adds, "I am overwhelmingly grateful that I am able to enjoy the freedom of choice and still get the best work with my most favourite people!" One of them is director Vishal Bhardwaj, whom Tabu considers "family". In 2023, she reunited with Bhardwaj for the Netflix film Khufiya and also collaborated for the first time with his son Aasmaan, in the film Kuttey

Speaking about her trajectory, the actor says, "When you are younger, you want different things in life. I was 16 years old when I started in the industry. At that age, one mostly does things for the charm and the glamour. And I do miss Irrfan

(late actor Irrfan Khan) as his words, 'apne liye jiyo (live for yourself)', keep echoing in my ears! If there is one person that really turned me around purposefully, it was him." This is perhaps the reason why Tabu is doing things the way she wants, and at a pace that she chooses.

Another stereotype Tabu has been challenging constantly is ageing! She confesses that she prefers to age gracefully rather than look unnatural! “This may not sound true but I do nothing for my face. I’m aware that some makeup, hairstyles and even clothes look better on me and those are what I follow."

W HAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW

Tabu's first role as an actress was in the Telugu film Coolie No.1, along with south superstar Venkatesh, which released in 1991.

Tabu's first release in Hindi as a leading lady was Pehla Pehla Pyar, which hit the theatres in 1994. But she got accolade for her role in Vijaypath (1994), opposite Ajay Devgn.

Tabu hails from Hyderabad but is a pure vegetarian. She loves rice with everything and her cheat meal is "hot, crispy samosa". She loves tea as well.
