The holy trinity of Lord Brahma as the creator, Lord Vishnu as the preserver and Lord Shiva as the destroyer constitutes the central deities of this series and features in its narratives. The volume 1 and 2 of the Brahma Purana has been translated by Bibek Debroy, a renowned economist, scholar and translator. Sometimes referred to as Adi Purana, Brahma Purana oscillates between being a work of geography, and an encyclopaedic work of cosmology, genealogy and mythology.

balloon ride over the ghats in Varanasi

Did you know?

The great poet and saint Kabir got his guru mantra on the ghats of Varanasi; it’s also home to poets Premchand and Tulsidas. The Banares Hindu University (BHU) is the largest residential university of Asia.

The world’s oldest, and continuously lived-in, city, Varanasi, is the place where life and death intertwine, with a living, daily spectacle offered up on the shores of River Ganga lined by ancient edifices, mini-fortresses and temples. The soul of Varanasi is the holy river, which flows by 88 ‘ghats’ or banks – where devotees offer prayers and take a dip in its swiftly moving waters. Also known as Kashi (the City of Lights) – the word Kashi comes from ‘kash’ or light – locals say when the first rays of sunlight hit River Ganga, it forms a Shiv Linga, reiterating that Varanasi was built by Lord Shiva himself to live with Goddess Parvati after their marriage. But beyond the newly-renovated Kashi Vishwanath Mandir and the myriad temples that dot its narrow, bustling lanes, Varanasi is a visitor’s paradise – famous for its silks (the Banarasi weave was born here), street food (kachoris and sweets come to mind), ghats and old havelis that can be explored by foot, via a boat ride or high up from the sky, from a hot air balloon. Cruise above the city A unique way to marvel at this ancient city is to take a hot air balloon ride. In 2021, a special hot air balloon session was arranged by Uttar Pradesh Tourism during Dev Deepawali, a festival

celebrated 15 days after Diwali. Cruising above 1,000 ft with the Ganga undulating below and the ghats beckoning, is a surreal experience. The first ghat you spot from the sky is the white-stepped Scindia Ghat and the Bhonsale Ghat, around which tiny blue boats fan out. Hovering above the water, you can hear the sounds of prayer bells as devotees perform their morning pujas and bathe at the ghats. It seems almost unreal, as the gigantic balloon glides over the winding lanes and old havelis and muffled sounds of a city waking up fill your ears.

Breakfast delights What’s a visit to Varanasi without tasting its world-famous kachoris, specially when they are being freshly fried during breakfast? Sample a hing (asafoetida) kachori at the Nilu Kachodi Bhandar in Kachori Gali (in close proximity to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple). Run by the friendly Nilu bhaiya, this eatery serves hot kachoris with a sweet-sour tamarind chutney. Most eateries still serve breakfast in traditional plates made of dried

leaves and the flavour of the leaf adds a unique dimension to the steaming kachoris! Next it's time to try malaiyo, another winter staple of the city. At Shriji Sweets in Thatheri Bazar, this dessert of sweetened milk foam flavoured with saffron is still made from a secret 100-year-old recipe. Remember, it's only served during winter and until 11 am. Yoga by the river If you want a soulful experience, break your dawn with an early morning yoga session at the ghats – a free session is held daily at 7 am at Assi Ghat – or join the classes at Sri Yoga Mandir on Nagwa Ghat or Yoga Nidhi in the city. Leaving Udaygiri, we climb more steps and scale the hillock of Khandagiri to see more caves. We stumble upon the Khandagiri Cave that is marked as Cave no 5 and houses a chamber. We are told not to miss Ananta Cave, which has four chambers separated by three pillars. The first two caves derive their names from the carvings of parrots - Tatowa Gumpha - and are filled with sculptures, mainly of gandharvas (a class of celestial beings) and nayikas (female performers), and have dwarapalakas at the entrance. The Navamuni Gumpha has nine carvings of Tirthankaras and Yakshis on the walls. From the summit, you can feast your eyes on a splendid panoramic view of Bhubaneswar city sprawled out at a distance. And as you look down at the caves, you can only wonder about the secrets and stories they still hide.

The Lion Rock of Sigiriya

February 2022

Standing tall in the skies is the majestic Sigiriya Fort in Sri Lanka. We dive deeper into the secrets of the 5th-century palace. Words Soumya Gayatri

Rising sharply over the plains of Central Province in Sri Lanka, with its fair share of history and drama, the rock fortress of Sigiriya soars formidably above the surrounding green plains. Once home to a rogue king, this rocky citadel abounds with stories of passion, intrigue and betrayal. In 473 AD, Kashyapa I, the son of King Dhatusena of the Moriyan Dynasty in Sri Lanka, rose to power by killing his father and banishing his half-brother, Mogallana. Kashyapa I then decided to move his capital away from prying eyes. He built an impregnable (or so he thought) castle on a rocky outcrop in Sigiriya that stood at a height of 600 ft (approximately). The castle was built to look like a gigantic crouching lion and was portentous enough to instill fear in Kashyapa I’s enemies. It was called 'Sinhagiri' or the Lion Rock. With a sprawling palace complex on the top, an extensive network of caverns galleries and staircases, a mind-blowing array of ancient water gardens and a mysterious collection of frescoes – Sigiriya rock fortress is nothing short of an

Did you know? You need to climb more than 1,200 steps to reach the top of the Sigiriya rock fortress. These steps pass through several boulder gardens, frescoed caves, pavilions and platforms that are dotted with stunning views of the countryside.

Sigiriya is its exotic collection of frescoes. In a small niche high up on the rock wall, you will see vibrant paintings of numerous ethereal damsels. It is believed that at one point in time, as many as 500 such paintings adorned the western wall of Sigiriya.

It is hard to say for sure who these mysterious maidens were. Some believe they were apsaras (divine beings) meant to shower blessings on mortals. Despite conflicting theories, the Sigiriya nymphs do not cease to charm you with their beauty making it easy to visualise how stunning the western wall would have looked in its heyday.

A palace in the sky Set on an invincible terrain, the rock citadel of Sigiriya was King Kashyapa I’s palace in the sky. The ruins of a royal palace at the summit complete with a throne, a royal bath and several living quarters stand testimony to his imperial lifestyle.

Ancient water gardens Not all of Sigiriya’s treasures lie at the summit. Some of them are located right at the beginning of the climb - in its wellpreserved water gardens, fountains, moats and swimming pools.

As the first Deputy Managing Director and, till very recently, the first woman Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Gita Gopinath has her work cut out to guide the world economy through the Covid-19 crisis.

Featuring in the Financial Times' list of the top 25 influential women globally for 2021 is no mean feat. Named alongside Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Gita Gopinath is often hailed as “one of the world’s outstanding economists”. Among the most prominent voices in global economics today, Gopinath also stands tall as a testament to women empowerment across the world. An Indian-American, she was the first woman Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), serving as the Director of the IMF's Research Department and the Economic Counsellor of the Fund. Very recently, Gopinath, who has served the IMF for three years, was promoted to be the organisation's first Deputy Managing Director. Kristalina Georgieva, IMF's Managing Director has said Gopinath’s contribution to the institution's work has already been exceptional, especially her "intellectual leadership in helping the global economy and the Fund to navigate the twists and turns of the worst economic crisis of our lives". The Pandemic Plan With the Covid-19 pandemic posing a challenge to the Global Economic Order, Gopinath faced a stiff task of moving the global economy forward. While presenting the Pandemic Plan, a road map to blunt the Covid-19 impact, Gopinath elaborated in 2021 that there is need to ensure that 40 per cent of persons in every country are vaccinated by the end-2021; risks related to variants are managed; and lives are saved through testing, therapeutic, and diagnostic. "A top priority for 2022 should be widespread vaccinations everywhere. Around 86 countries have not met the 40 per cent goal for 2021. Needed:

Stating a need for a global fund of around USD 50 billion, she emphasised how that could soften the impact of the pandemic and how a global response was warranted. Speaking at an event of the IMF, she said, "We have the science and we have the technology needed to get shots in arms and to do the testing. We just have to make it available at scale to all parts of the world." Post-Pandemic Challenges Drawing lessons from the pandemic, Gopinath is not averse to the economic concerns around the world and the growing push towards protectionism within some governments.

The Third Year Of The Pandemic Speaking to a news channel in December 2021 on the Omicron variant, Gopinath elaborated on the steps necessary for the global economic recovery. She said, “It is essential to make sure you are doing your vaccinations on a war footing. What we see around the world is that when vaccine cases come down, pressure comes off, people don't think about getting vaccinated. So, getting over vaccine hesitancy through a much higher rate of vaccination is essential.”

Speaking to the Financial Times in November 2020, in what can now be termed the early months of the pandemic, she had stated that a lot would depend upon how this crisis ends. “Suppose, it turns out that in the next half year or so, or in 2021, the pandemic is well under control and the jobs have come back, and people are returning to productive employment. In that case, I believe there will be a political environment to make sure that there is not a shift to protectionism”.

In her conversation, she also stressed the need for an accommodative monetary policy to aid the recovery of economies like India and, lastly, to up the ante when it comes to expenditure on health and education. something but for some reason is not doing anything. That story interests me, and after being a father to two kids, it was very relatable," says the actor. When asked how much his children have changed him as a person, he candidly admits, “I was largely self-oriented till Misha and then Zain happened. Not that I disregarded everyone else earlier but these two changed my entire viewpoint to everything - whether it was shoot schedules, events, shows or even family get-togethers and holidays!" A self-confessed lover of adventure travel, Kapoor says, "All of that 'pack-yourbags-and-get-up-and-go' has taken a backseat and so have the destinations we choose for family travel."

Shahid Kapoor

From being the quintessential chocolate boy hero to buying chocolates for his two kids, Shahid Kapoor has come a long way. The actor insists that his fun or laid-back image was largely for the screen. In real life, he is "quite responsible" by his own admission. This was perhaps one of the reasons why Kapoor also chose to portray the role of a cricketer on a comeback in the much-awaited film Jersey. "I had quite a few flops in the first 15 years of my career that made me develop a hard skin. So when Arjun's (the film's protagonist Arjun Talwar) story was narrated to me, I saw a very subliminal and touching layer of motivation in the character. It is not really at the forefront and seems laid-back. Some people may also misjudge him to be not very motivated. There is internal angst, belief and a need to prove himself throughout. That was interesting. I do not want to see a story about a guy who does not want to do anything. I want to see a story about a guy who wants to do

So, what are the places that he travels to with his family? "For starters, the place has to have moderate climate neither extremely hot nor cold. Secondly, there has to be something to do for everyone. We are a family that is big on entertainment. The beaches are a good idea but we live on one in Mumbai, so that's hardly a change. Udaipur has something for everyone. I used to like it but as a family, it has become one of our favourites now," reveals Kapoor. The father of two toddlers swears by "Rajasthani hospitality and warmth - so essential when you are travelling as a family". Speaking about the virtues of Udaipur, Kapoor has a whole list that "keeps everyone happy and occupied in the city!", adding, "Udaipur, with its stunning palaces, gorgeous lakes, and centuries of culture and history, is undoubtedly one of the best destinations, the world over! I would always avoid 'touristy' places, but with or without crowds, Udaipur is beautiful."

Adorned with natural beauty, magnificent ruins and popular pilgrimage destinations, it is a perfect place for exploring different cultures, contrasts and cuisines. Not insignificantly, the offbeat villages and towns of the state make for a delightful sojourn too. One such town is Kondapalli, an industrial suburb, located just 16 km from Vijayawada (one of Andhra Pradesh's largest cities) in the lap of abundant forests. The fort If you are a history lover, you must plan a tête-à-tête with one of the oldest and bravest sentinels from the 14th century - the Kondapalli Fort, also called the Kondapalli Killa. An architectural marvel, the fort has witnessed several cultural and political shifts in this region.

The fort was built by the Reddy rulers, whose fort-building skills were exemplary. It then came under Qutub Shahis, Asaf Jahis, the Madras Presidency and the British. In its heydays, the fort stood strong with three gates and was protected by a variety of arms and ammunitions. One of the gates, Dargah Darwaza, stands even today and is used as the main entrance to the fort. The fort had been in utter neglect for over three centuries, since the fall of the Qutub Shahi dynasty, and has been renovated by the state tourism department and the Department of Archaeology and Museums Andhra Pradesh. The architectural style of the Kondapalli Fort is uniquely hybrid, reflecting the influence of its many rulers. Green Intentions

The Art of Upcycling As the world moves towards green living and sustainable initiatives that benefit the environment, there are several entrepreneurial ventures that are redefining the term ‘best out of waste’ by upcycling discarded products into utility objects Words Shrabasti Anindita Mallik 64

February 2022

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st Century. With countries around the world working towards a greener route of development, many entrepreneurs in India have taken it upon themselves to script India's green growth stories. Some of these entrepreneurs are working towards finding effective and innovative ways that are contributing not just to environment protection but also providing employment. We take a look at two such ventures that have managed to change the narrative both in terms of curbing the amount of harm caused to mother nature and job creation. Ecokaari - Forging a path towards sustainable development Pioneering the idea of 'best out of waste', Ecokaari, a Pune-based company has been making waves with its vision of upcycling plastic waste into magnificent handcrafted products that are known for their durability.

Nandan Bhat, founder of Ecokaari, started this venture when he sought to find a solution to the growing menace of plastic waste - annually, almost nine million tonnes of plastic waste is generated in India. Ecokaari has managed to combine two visions in one - upcycling plastic waste and promoting the traditional handloom industry. The plastic waste is first collected, then it is washed in biodegradable cleaner and dried. It is later cut into small strips based on its colour and thickness, after which they are spun on a charkha (spinning wheel) into bobbins. These bobbins are then used in a traditional handloom to weave fabrics. These fabrics are used to make yoga mats, tote and duffle bags, wallets, table mats, cutlery kit pouches, and cushion and table covers. While the products are utilitarian and good-looking, the company also helps people from less privileged backgrounds to acquire new skills (thereby giving a boost to Indian handloom) and be financially stable.

Ecokaari's unique process of UPCYCLING uses a traditional Charkha & Handloom to weave a fabric from all waste plastic that's gathered. The entire process is manual, thus creating livelihood opportunities and reviving Indian weaving heritage. For more information, ecokaari.org

Temple waste is collected and brought to Phool facility.

Flowers are segregated by hand and plastics/paper/ idols are weeded out.

Dried petals are powdered and mixed with natural plant resins and a 'secret mix' to make a dough. They are then packed into phool incense boxes with love and care. The dough is hand-rolled to make raw incense sticks and cones and dried.

The dried incense sticks and cones are then dipped in essential oils.

An organic biocullum is sprayed on the flowers to offset the chemical residue.

The green part of the flowers and leaves are mixed with cow dung, 17 different elements and a 'secret mix'.

Flowers are then carefully washed. The water is stored and used in vermicomposting.

Petals of each flower are broken and sun dried.

Dried petals are moulded with natural fungi to make florafoam.

Earthworms are added to eat up the waste and make vermicompost.

Phool - Bringing the fragrance of devotion to your doorstep Ever wondered where the flowers offered in temples ultimately land? This question gave birth to the idea of Phool, a Kanpur-based company founded in 2015 by Ankit Agarwal, whose curiosity was piqued when he visited the Ganga ghat in the city. Seeing how the flowers collected from nearby temples were being dumped in the River Ganga, Agarwal started thinking about ways to recycle them effectively so as to reduce the burden on the river. With this mission, the company started collecting and recycling used flowers and after several tests found the perfect solution - processing the flowers from the temples into such organic products as incense sticks, incense cones, gulaal (powdered colour), vermicompost and several other useful products. Phool is not only finding a solution to the problem of temple waste but also providing

Corporate Social Responsibility

Santas in Blue! As a part of one of IndiGoReach's outreach initiatives during Christmas 2021, our teams across 42 locations reached out to children across communities with goodies such as schools bags, stationeries and other gift items. Keeping Covid-19 safety protocols in mind, these gifts were handed over to our partner organisations, Responsenet and YuvaUnstoppable to be distributed amongst more than 1,400 children. This was one of our ways to bring joy and cheer to our little friends.

Shades on or off? Believe it or not, your window shades play an important role in ensuring your safety. Here's how: 1. Keeping your window shades up during takeoff/ landing helps the cabin crew quickly assess the situation outside and form an exit plan in case of an unforeseen circumstance. 2. Once the doors are opened upon arrival, the cabin crew may ask you to close the window shades to maintain the cabin temperature and ensure your comfort and safety. Please follow your cabin crew’s instructions for a safe flight.
