The State Emblem of India is an adaptation from the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. In the original, there are four lions, standing back to back, on an abacus with a frieze carrying sculptures in high relief of an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull and a lion separated by intervening wheels over a bell-shaped lotus. Carved out of a single block of sandstone, the Capital is crowned by the Wheel of the Law (Dharma Chakra).

Leader
Dear Reader, welcome aboard! I am nearly five years into my IndiGo journey, and during this time, I have had the privilege of leading a remarkably talented and dedicated team with two responsibilities – to plan, execute and manage our network of flight services in India and abroad; and to manage pricing for the inventory of seats on each and every one of these flights in order to maximise demand and revenue. IndiGo was born out of belief in the potential of India. We believe that the most populous nation, a global economic powerhouse and this immense diversity in geography, climate, people and culture is the world's most dynamic and fastest growing travel demand ecosystem. And we believe that it deserves a world class airline network delivered by an airline Made in India. As economic growth spreads across the length and breadth of the country, travel will be driven by a variety of needs – to work, to study, to relax, to visit home and loved ones, to receive treatment, to visit our places of worship, or sometimes just to explore and discover. Our objective is to fulfill this need through our core promises – affordable travel, delivered consistently and efficiently, across an unparalleled network and through a great customer experience. Our team within IndiGo is tasked to identify, evaluate and finalise all such opportunities for network expansion through a mix of entrepreneurial spirit and rigorous datadriven assessment. This leads to a continuously enriched portfolio of new flights, new routes, new destinations and new connectivity. We also believe that efficiency is crucial to deliver affordability to our customers. So, our network is continuously optimised to improve efficiency of how our planes and resources are utilised. Finally, predictive science combines with technology and experience in a group that manages prices offered on all the capacity we make available for sale. This includes fares for non-stop and connecting itineraries, varying across times of day, days of week, seasons of the year and points of origin. This group ensures that the seats that we offer across our domestic and international network are available at prices that meet the twin objectives of affordability to our customers and

Last year has been especially exciting for us in terms of growth and connectivity. We started the year with a little over 1,600 flights per day and had crossed 2,000 daily flights by the end. We opened 16 new destinations, of which six were international locations, taking our total to 118. These included our first foray into the CIS region, Indonesia and Africa. We crossed an equally impressive milestone of over 500 non-stop routes in our network and closed 2023 by becoming the first Indian airline ever to carry 100 million passengers in a single calendar year. With this growth, dear reader, know you are now travelling on a proudly Indian airline that is counted amongst the top 10 in the world. Our team’s ingenuity to design and deploy an airline network of this scale and complexity would have been for naught had it not been down to the outstanding execution and support by our colleagues in operational, commercial and support functions across the network. The effort of more than 30,000 people has led to the materialisation of these achievements. But most important of all, it is you, our customer, that has made this possible. Your patronage has given us confidence to keep pushing further and higher. That IndiGo has achieved this milestone of 100 million passengers at the relatively young age of 17, nearly 15 years earlier than any other airline in the 100 million club globally, just reinforces our belief in the potential of India. What drives me personally, is that this incredible journey for the airline is merely a taste of what is to come. With nearly 1,000 aircraft on order, we are busy preparing for the next phase of the journey for IndiGo. We will continue to push out to new and previously unconnected international locations, bring air connectivity to more cities and towns in India, connect more cities together with non-stop services, add new times of day on existing routes and innovate to deliver pricing and product innovation. While our first 100 million was achieved in record time, our goal is that the next 100 million will be in half that time! So, thank you for flying with us, dear reader. As we continue to grow our presence globally, we hope that you will choose to travel with us many times in the years to come.

TALKING POINT
THE ‘PHOENIX RISE’ MINDSET
E
"Rich Dad Poor Dad" extend their influence beyond financial assets. They actively invest in their children's education, instilling not just monetary knowledge but also shaping their character and mindset. These parents prioritise creating a legacy that transcends material prosperity. Parents can become architects of financial intelligence, weaving a narrative where their children inherit not just financial acumen but also a burning desire to make meaningful contributions to the world.
mbark on a journey with insights from the visionary and educationist Dr Manimekalai Mohan, delving into success mindset and resilience symbolised by 'Phoenix rise’. How can one navigate challenges and setbacks with grace? Navigating challenges with grace involves adopting a mindset akin to the phoenix rising from ashes. Individuals, even with a negative mindset, must recognise adversity as integral to life. Instead of succumbing to setbacks, embracing them as catalysts for growth is crucial. This perspective symbolises resilience, enabling one to rebound stronger after difficulties. The phoenix mindset represents overcoming trials with adaptability and emerging with newfound strength and wisdom, transforming setbacks into stepping stones for personal development and success. How do you define an individual’s success in life? The quote "Being at the top is an attitude" encapsulates the idea that success isn't solely about external achievements; it's deeply rooted in adopting a positive and confident mindset. Success becomes a manifestation of one's attitude, perspective, and the belief in one's

capabilities. It emphasises the profound impact of mindset on achieving goals, highlighting that a positive outlook can be a driving force in reaching the pinnacle of one's endeavours by fostering resilience, determination and confidence. How can parents impart wisdom beyond imparting material wealth and leave a lasting legacy for their children? In the spirit of the phoenix rise mindset, parents embracing the teachings just like mentioned in the book
How do individuals with a powerful mindset handle challenges differently? Individuals with a powerful mindset approach challenges with a distinct perspective that sets them apart from others. They recognise that challenges are temporary, and unlike those who succumb to setbacks, individuals with a powerful mindset use adversity as a springboard for growth. Their trajectory remains on an upward trend, continually reaching greater heights. The metaphor of the phoenix rising captures this transformative process— they emerge from challenges stronger and more resilient than before. It is a guiding force that ensures a continuous ascent, demonstrating the ability to learn, adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. What is your opinion about a steady mindset? The analogy of the tortoise withdrawing its limbs imparts a valuable lesson about maintaining a steady mindset amidst distractions. Like the tortoise that withdraws from all sides, individuals with a steady mindset consciously detach from negative influences and distractions. This intentional withdrawal allows them to focus on what truly matters, cultivates unwavering wisdom and prevents the energy from scattering. This disciplined approach of selective engagement to managing external stimuli ensures that their focus remains steady, contributing to consistent personal and intellectual growth.

I am truly grateful for my transformative journey at IndiGo which began in 2006 as a Cabin Crew. My leaders are my motivation, and each day at IndiGo is full of learning, growth, and opportunities. The experience from a novice to a Senior Manager has turned mere work into my passion. I feel proud of everything I have achieved at IndiGo - my constant support, safe space, and home.
Aviation is my first love and I have been a part of this industry for over 25 years. Joining IndiGo in 2007 as the Airport Manager in Bhubaneswar marked the beginning of an everlasting connection. I have had the opportunity to manage airports and expand the Cabin Grooming vertical, from a small team of 10 to 250. Today, as the Director of AOCS, I feel proud to have been a part of IndiGo’s immense growth. I eagerly look forward to accomplishing more milestones in the future.

Having transitioned from being an ENT surgeon to a pilot, my thrilling journey with IndiGo started as a First Officer in 2011. I grew with IndiGo to become a Captain and now a Type Rated Instructor, training the next generation of pilots on the Airbus A320. I also spearheaded initiatives to enhance awareness on crew fatigue during my tenure in the Flight Safety Department. IndiGo's remarkable growth story and my role in its safety and training initiatives have made this an exhilarating and rewarding journey.
IndiGo is my home and it is here that I experienced the “Power of We”. I joined IndiGo in 2006 as a Lead Cabin Crew and spearheaded the inaugural flight from Singapore to Mumbai in 2011; I have only moved forward from there. As the Senior Manager of IFS Mumbai, I feel honoured to be a part of this exciting journey full of learning. IndiGo has been with me through thick and thin in these 17 years, turned challenges into success stories, and I feel this is just the beginning.

Imagine sleeping in a glass domed-igloo as the magical Northern Lights fill the sky with a technicolour show of dancing green, fuchsia and indigo. Not just a great photo opportunity, the Aurora Borealis can make most of us halt in awe of nature's miracles. But these swirling lights are tricky to spot and are best seen close to the Arctic Circle during winter. Norway offers great viewing opportunities, with the city of Tromsø being one of the most popular. At Tromsø, one can see the Aurora Borealis even when the activity is low. For a more exclusive experience, visit the nearby Lyngenfjord region, where you do not have to head out on a safari to spot the magic. You can watch the Northern Lights from the warmth of your bed. Further away, Alta is one of the best places in Norway to chase the Northern Lights. The city has a public bath including large, open-air tubs, where people can soak while watching the light dance! If you are in the mood for adventure, embark on a Northern Lights safari with a tour operator. Enthusiasts can also go hiking, skiing or join a whale or wildlife tour. Scientists say 2024 will offer some of the best sightings of the Northern Lights, as the sun will be reaching the peak of its approximately 11-yearcycle known as “solar maximum.” Enjoy the lights till April.

Picture wind-swept plateaus of rolling green punctuated by crystalline lakes, blending into dramatic canyons, where tales of antiquity echo through the lingering imprints of ancient footsteps. While Kazakhstan's riches have transformed its cities into shimmering urban hubs, it's beyond the cityscapes that the true essence of this land can be discovered. The call of the wild leads you to the vast Steppe,

Along the undulating emerald plateau flow meandering rivers, where ancient caravans stopped on their way from Europe and Central Asia to China and India. Even today, in summer, livestock farmers set up camp, reminiscent of an age-old practice.
and into the humble village homes, where warm hospitality is a way of life. While most tourist brochures will lead you to Almaty, make this bustling city your base to discover the untouched wilderness surrounding it. An ideal way to explore the country is by renting a 4WD (four-wheeldrive) car – it can take you to places you wouldn't get to otherwise. Ride with cattle herders and wild horses, along the banks

Naldehra, Himachal Pradesh Located in the hilly terrain of Himachal Pradesh, and about 22 km from Shimla, the Naldehra Golf Club is one of India's oldest golf courses. The par-69, 18-hole course features 16 greens and 18 tees, and the layout is a reminder of the sloping glades of Scotland's highlands. Nestled in a dense canopy of deodar trees, the classic course is designed over a long, sloping glade and is regarded as one of the most challenging in the country. Naldehra is also renowned for its greens, cleverly-placed bunkers, and undulating fairways, which provide a rewarding round of golf for players of all skill levels. It is said that in the early 1900s, when Shimla was India's summer capital, Lord Curzon,
the-then Viceroy, was a frequent visitor to this forested area. The place's enduring appeal and its striking resemblance to the Scottish landscape inspired Lord Curzon to lay the foundation of a golf course on the hillsides surrounding the massive glade. The idea was put into action as the course took shape on natural topography, which has remained untouched to this day. He even named his third daughter Alexandra Naldehra after this scenic spot. The course is maintained by Himachal Tourism.
Note this: The course offers accommodation nearby and has a multi-cuisine restaurant for fine-dining. Visit nearby temples and the Mahasu peak. There are several hiking trails to explore as well. A trip to Shimla is a must.

The layout of this 18-hole course features a striking contrast between a parkland backdrop and Scottish links-style design.
Note this: MDGC offers comfortable accommodation, world-class amenities, and unparalleled convenience in the form of beautifully-appointed rooms, a well-stocked bar, and a multi-cuisine restaurant. The flavourful fire-roasted meat, a local delicacy, is to die for!

Epic Money Matters
58
February 2024
Ankur Warikoo Most of us know him as a digital content creator, but Ankur Warikoo has been successfully straddling multiple roles, from entrepreneur to public speaker and author, making him a role model for many youngsters. The 43-year-old internet sensation, whose life lessons might populate your Instagram feed, believes that the best way to communicate with the Gen Z is by speaking their lingo. That's what he does in his third book, Make Epic Money, in which Warikoo simplifies concepts for those who are seeking ways to manage money better. Here are excerpts from a quick chat. From the corporate world to content creation and then writing a book— what keeps you inspired? Honestly, I am fascinated by life, which, on one hand, looks so purposeless (we are born, we live and then die, to be forgotten soon) and yet, the purpose can be defined every moment by how we live it. As a content creator, is it challenging to maintain consistency while ensuring that the audience is able to relate? Not when you do what you love. I do not have to pretend to be someone else when I create content. If I fumble, I do not edit those parts. If I do not know the answer to any question, I admit it. If I make a mistake, I apologise. When you are authentically yourself, consistency is a natural outcome. You have often said you turn your failures into content. What's the biggest lesson you've learnt? That this too shall pass. Whatever you are feeling right now – high or low – will change. Whatever you are going through will fade away. Always remember that emotions are transient and so are the moments of low. What makes your new book relatable and yet different from other books on moneymanagement? Most books on handling money tend to be complicated, technical and end up intimidating more than being helpful. When I sat down to write Make Epic Money, the question I asked was – what will a book on money for Gen Z Indians look like? The answer was 'certainly not like the previous books.' This one is easy to read, doesn't include jargons, and is in a language that
the audience can relate to. It is written from the lens of the money mistakes that I have made; not from a point of expertise. In your book, you mention that money gives us freedom. Should we rethink the idea that money cannot buy us happiness? Money can, definitely, not buy us happiness. But it can buy most things that make us happy. The distinction is: are you running after money, or have you gone beyond money? Those who chase financial success and make it the sole objective of their life, are mostly miserable. Those who respect money, appreciate it and use it for their comfort, health, safety, and well-being, are mostly happy. What is one of the commonest 'epic' mistakes we make when it comes to money management? Thinking that it’s too late to start. It's never too late to start taking money-management seriously. I started taking money seriously when I was 40 years old! And at 43, I have financially retired. If I could do it at 40, anyone can do it at any age!
"Those who respect money and use it for their comfort, health, safety, and well-being, are mostly happy."
How does one save money for that long-awaited international trip to a dream destination? First, decide when and where you want to go, how much it would cost to go there today and hence, how much it would cost to go there when you wish to (accounting for inflation). Save at least 20 per cent of your monthly income; ideally 30 per cent. Use the rest to pay for your needs and to enjoy in the present. Finally, you can invest this 20 per cent into a monthly mutual fund SIP, so that you hit the number in the time period possible. What's your favourite travel destination? My family and I love going back to the mountains in Uttarakhand and Goa's beaches. Outside of India, we loved Italy and Australia. How do you like to travel — savour experiences or tick off your bucket list? Absolutely savour! We like to stay at one place for long, take walking tours, meet locals, eat local food, and experience life as close to a native as we can. Our photographs are not of monuments or destinations but of the place and its vibe.
