A land enriched with history and culture from the days of yore, Patna stands grounded on the southern bank of the holy Ganga with open arms for the avid explorer within you. The ancient city and erstwhile capital of the Magadh kingdom is a vivid reminder of India's rich heritage, and is surrounded by many relics that are symbols of India's magnificent past.

Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya Bodh Gaya, a prominent Buddhist pilgrimage site, approximately 110 kms from Patna, has been rightly acclaimed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is where the revered Mahabodhi temple rests at the bank of the Lilajan River (also known as Phalgu, a tributary of River Ganga) in the Gaya district of Bihar. You will notice a very distinct spiritual atmosphere when you visit the site where the famous Bodhi tree stands under which Lord Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment on the ‘vajrasana’, also known as the ‘diamond throne’. The idea that this is the exact place where such a momentous revelation took place will leave you in awe of the Mahabodhi temple and its history. Although it is one of the four main pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, it welcomes people from all walks of life as the main theme of the shrine is peace and harmony in the world.

Rajgir The town of Rajgir, which literally means ‘abode of the Gods’ or ‘City of the Kings’ is located 93 km towards the southeast of Patna. It is famously known to be the place where Lord Mahavira and Lord Buddha imparted their wisdom to their disciples. A Vishwa Shanti Stupa, which means ‘World Peace Stupa’, with Buddha statues mounted on all four sides, has been commemorated in honour of the Buddhist teachings. A ropeway takes visitors to the stupa, which offers a beautiful view of the town that is surrounded by the Ratnagiri hills and forests. Rajgir is wellknown for the seven hot springs of Saptarshi that all flow into one pool of water called the Brahmakund. It is said that this water body has medicinal properties and is a holy bathing place for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains alike. The Rajgir Wildlife Sanctuary has kept the ecosystem of this place intact and that is why Rajgir is a breath of fresh air.

Did you know? According to historical studies, Nalanda University was founded by famous Gupta emperor Kumaragupta. Prajnavarman and Xuanzang, both claimed him as the laying founder of the university, which is also proved by the seal discovered at the site of ruins of the Nalanda University.

Kesariya (Kesaria) Kesariya is located at a distance of 107 kms from Patna and legend has it that Lord Buddha’s teacher before enlightenment, Alara Kalama, was from Kesariya and that is why it is a significant stop on the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit. The world’s tallest excavated stupa, called the Kesariya Stupa, was discovered in 1998 and it rises to the height of 104 feet. When Lord Buddha came to Kesariya he narrated that he ruled Kesariya as the ‘Chakravarti Raja” in his previous birth. This is why this small town plays an important role in the devotion of Buddhists. Till date, many excavations have been sanctioned and are in progress because each project uncovers new details to throw further light on that glorious period of history. It is amazing that this small town holds such a plethora of cultural knowledge and heritage, and these unexplored gems are truly a delight for the seekers of history, philosophy and of course, spirituality.

Nalanda

32

Nalanda At a distance of 65 kms northeast of Patna, Nalanda is considered to be the world’s first ever residential university (5th to 12th century AD). It is said Lord Buddha had graced this institution himself many times and that is why it was also a hub for scholars from all around the world. The town of Nalanda also houses an archaeological museum, where relics from its ancient glory are preserved and displayed. A renowned Chinese monk deciphered the city’s name to be kept after a serpent but later an archaeologist suggested that Nalanda represents lotus stalks. Whatever the name may really mean, a place like this has so much mystique that one can’t help but wonder what other historical moments may have taken place in this educational wonder. Well equipped with a library full of texts, Nalanda is a philosopher’s delight. A monastic and scholastic wonder, Nalanda is rich with educational values and is an ideal escape from the modern society.

Nature beckons at Dibrugarh Coined the ‘Tea City of India,’ Dibrugarh is a delightful marriage of pristine natural beauty, culture and tradition. A nature lover’s haven, the sprawling tea gardens and the vast forest reserves of Dibrugarh welcome you.

34

January 2022

Dibrugarh, a quaint tea town with lush estates, exhibits a panoply of enchanting flora and fauna that draws us away from the daily hustle and bustle of work and city life. Located on the northern-most tip of Assam, set on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra river, Dibrugarh is surrounded by lush tea estates, some even going back to the British era. Dibrugarh serves as the ideal entry point to Assam’s tea districts. The districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sivasagar collectively account for almost half of India’s Assamese tea crop. A drive around Dibrugarh has on display luxuriant tea plantations bordering every road. The myriad shades of green in a single spread of a tea garden are bewildering.

ON THE BANKS OF THE BRAHMAPUTRA Approximately 450 km east of Guwahati, Dibrugarh is undoubtedly one of the most significant towns in the upper ranges of the Brahmaputra valley as well as the industrial and healthcare centre of the Upper Assam region. Another significant feature of Dibrugarh, and in fact, of most Assamese cities, is River Brahmaputra. Irrespective of where you are, the river bank is not too far away, and the city’s as well as its inhabitants’ destinies seem to be intimately linked with the river. The people of Dibrugarh co-exist peacefully with the Brahmaputra, continually being reminded of the river’s supremacy.

Like most of Assam, the mighty Brahmaputra is the lifeline of Dibrugarh.

35

EXPLORING NATURE IN DIBRUGARH The two main attractions are the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary at Naharkatia and the Jokai Botanical Garden cum Germplasm Centre. What do we expect when we go to such places? We seek refuge and solace in the fact that at the end of the day, Mother Nature is thriving and her arms are always wide open to embrace us as and when we need a break. And well, Dibrugarh has that in abundance! Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary The Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a National Park in 2004 by the government of Assam and is essentially a rainforest sprawled across 575 sq km spanning Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Charaideo, making it the principal stretch of lowland rainforests in India. It prides itself upon its biodiversity because along with being an

36

elephant reserve under Project Elephant, it houses some of the most remarkable animals native to India like royal Bengal tiger, Asiatic elephants, hoolock gibbons, Chinese pangolins, etc. A bird watcher’s delight, this four-layered rainforest offers up to 293 different species of our feathered friends such as the white cheeked hill partridge, khaleej pheasant, white backed vulture and many more. This tropical haven is home to a thick population of the sky-high state tree of Assam, hollong tree, along with ou tenga trees (elephant apple - used for Assamese pickles), uriam trees (scratch posts for the tigers of Assam), etc. Jokai Botanical Gardens As one rainforest leaves you mesmerised, to add further to this experience comes the Jokai Botanical Gardens at the Jokai Reserve

Forest, a mere 12 km from Dibrugarh. This garden is known for the special visits by migratory birds around the year as well as the different sections such as the section hosting a variety of medicinal and aromatic plants; the rainforest specimen plot, the orchid house and the water pond. One of the most captivating things about this garden is that it is the storehouse for the rare and endangered flora of the region and that is why it is called a Germplasm. The idea that a place holds so much significance in preserving components of the ecosystem is enthralling.

The wonders of nature at Dibrugarh leave visitors enchanted not only by the visual beauty of it all but the inner peace that comes from standing amidst a green paradise. Conservation of nature and its inhabitants is a noble stance that this city has imbibed and every bit of the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary and The Jokai Botanical Gardens stands witness to this magnificent deal made with the environment. Dibrugarh’s national parks are a melting pot of rare and exotic species of mammals and wild life coexisting with each other in complete harmony.

If luck’s on your side, you might even see one of the big cats – a royal Bengal tiger or a leopard – or the relatively rare Gangetic river dolphin tumbling around playfully in the water.

What's unique Apart from basking in nature’s therapy, Dibrugarh is also great for indulging in retail therapy especially the coveted Assam silk for which Dibrugarh is renowned. You’ll discover a plethora of silk products and clothing to suit your taste and wallet here. Like most of Assam, the formidable Brahmaputra flows through Dibrugarh but this city also has a remarkable waterway grid that spreads from Sadiyato the Bangladesh border.

Shillong in a verse Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s lesser-known tryst with Shillong is actually one of his most romantic ones. Here’s why

Falling in love with a place and that too enough to leave a piece of your heart there, is a pleasure that no materialistic worldly gains could offer. Rabindranath Tagore was lucky to experience such an untainted adoration of the serene haven that is Shillong, famously known as the Scotland of the East. Aptly and respectfully named ‘Gurudev’ by Mahatma Gandhi (who in turn was called Mahatma by Tagore), Tagore was already the treasured Rabi Babu of Bengal (West Bengal), a renowned global entity, and a Nobel Laureate, when he first visited Shillong in October of 1919 and stayed at Brookside (a bungalow in Riblong, belonging to the assistant commissioner at the time). It was here that he wrote to Lady Ranu Mukherjee; “There is bright sunshine this morning, with a few stray clouds clinging to the hills, as if basking in the sun. They appear too indolent to precipitate into rainfall. There is no similarity between my writing room here and my nook in Santiniketan. This room is fairly large, furnished with a table, sofa, bed and

Did you know? The Brookside Bungalow belonged to the then Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Division. The bungalow was taken over by the Meghalaya government in 1990 and converted into Rabindra Art Gallery. Though much has changed around the Brookside, a eucalyptus still stands tall in the vicinity of the bungalow.

Wind whirls through the great pine trees Every breath kills germs of disease Restores health to the frail and ailing With renewed vigour and virilities... armchair. The windows have glass panes; I can see the tall deodar trees trying to communicate with the clouds. The garden is resplendent with jasmine, chrysanthemum, rose and several unknown varieties of blossoms. I wake up before sunrise and walk along the path bordering the flowers; they are not afraid of my grey beard or flowing robes. They are full of merriment.” This revelation alone resonates with the idea that he felt a sense of belonging and acceptance even though it was his first stay. In another letter, which Tagore wrote to Hitendranath Nandy from Brookside on November 18, 1919, his fascination with the surroundings is vividly expressed: “I am very happy to be in Shillong. It is much better than

42

January 2022

Darjeeling... The place where we are staying is quite isolated and the lanes are quiet, overshadowed by deodar trees and washed by the rippling sound of the Nirjhorini.” It was this connection with the place that inspired his next visit in April 1923 and he stayed through the months of May and June and thus the celebrated ‘Shillong-er Chithi' was penned as an ode to Shillong. This “hillock covered in clusters of clouds” was a much needed breath of fresh air because he writes: “Wind whirls through the great pine trees Every breath kills germs of disease Restores health to the frail and ailing With renewed vigour and virilities…”

It's true A lesser known excerpt from the life of the legendary Rabindranath Tagore, is that his 65th birthday was celebrated in Shillong in 1923 at the home of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy (a freedom fighter and philanthropist who later went on to become the first Chief Minister of West Bengal after India gained independence), which has now become a circuit house.

The picturesque bungalow surrounded by debdaru (deodar) and eucalyptus trees in Shesher Kobita reflects the beauty of Brookside.

He was so smitten by the charms of these hills that when he went back, he wrote one of his most distinguished masterpieces called the ‘Shesher Kobita’ with his beloved Shillong as the major influence for the background of the novel. Out of 17 chapters, 13 have Shillong as the backdrop. The beauty of this roads through pine groves, solitary spaces work of art is that although Tagore does for morning lovers and the picturesque not mention Brookside as the setting of bungalow surrounded by ‘debdaru’ and the narrative, his lucid imageries and utter eucalyptus trees in Shesher Kabita reflect the finesse describe the bungalow surrounded beautiful scenario of the Brookside. by deodar, pine trees and ‘aka-baka-poth’ (winding road) in such a way that if one No wonder Rabindranath Tagore is visits, it is fathomable that it could be no revered the way that he is; an artist’s flair is other place but here. The green gorges, determined by the way he can harness his floating clouds, zig zag paths, narrow gift because the way the essence of a place has been transcribed into tumbling words from a mastermind and penned onto paper, is beyond commendable. Disciples of Tagore can vouch that even today, when they visit Shillong with its winding roads and Brookside IndiGo surrounded by the tall deodars, they can feel to Shillong the magic he left in this fantastical yet very www.goindigo.in real abode.

is a piece of paradise within easy reach!

alia bhatt

has slowly but surely emerged from being just another star kid to holding her own on the big screen. Right from her confident, but tepid debut in Student Of The Year, to the much-awaited Gangubai, the career graph of this effervescent actor has seen a distinct upward trajectory. But the one film in which Bhatt clearly established that she could impress with a subtle sincerity rather than hysterical histrionics was Gauri Shinde's Dear Zindagi, shot extensively in Goa. "I have the calm environs of where we were shooting to thank for. Goa has such a zen-like feel that I just was approaching each day calmly," Bhatt says, recalling her experience of shooting the movie. Adding to her fondness for Goa, Bhatt declares, "I'd been to Goa several times as a child. It was an easy getaway from Mumbai and it remains so even now. Given the choice, I would escape to Goa every weekend for the serenity. It was thanks to Gauri Shinde, that I had the chance to explore Goa and understand it on an emotional level when we were shooting for Dear Zindagi. And I mean the Goa that is not on the touristy map - the Goa in its quaint churches, the villages, the solitude of unexplored beaches - that is the Goa I love!" In fact, Bhatt was never hounded or chased by villagers when she was in Goa. "I'd take off my bicycle or even just walk with a few friends in the crew around the location. And barring a few toothy-smile children, who were easy to befriend, I don't think anybody even recognised me," says Bhatt unassumingly. The actor relates to the laid-back vibe of Goa more than any other place in the world and calls it her "place of calm." Bhatt has very clear favourites from a place "that is more than just its beaches".

briefing The Vibe Here is Life

Bhatt says: "Right from the time the sun rises and colours the waves and the sand, till the time it sets and puts the ocean on fire, the air in Goa smells of the colours of life! I may be overdoing the poetry, but I really do feel that way about Goa. Every single beach here is a lot of fun with friends, but even better to find yourself in the solitude. The entire mood helps you stay upbeat and grateful about life."

Goa

"When I first came to Goa, I recall having bebinca for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I had such a sweet tooth back then, and it showed the way I was! (Laughs). Even now the first thing I do when I land here is go to my secret spot a little off Panjim and stock up on bebinca for my stay here. I am also crazy about a local mixed vegetable stew tempered with tamarind, which is had with brown rice! Then of course the xacuti. It would probably be the last meal I'd want to die after…and live for!"

January 2022

Laid-back days "Most people think of Goa as buzzing with parties. But only a bit of that is true. You can be busy doing nothing in Goa and not feel bad about it. So even if you hit the beach in the day, you can laze under a shack sipping cool drinks and listen to the waves, have extended siestas. Then when the sun sets, you can watch the performers, fire dancers and bob with the music! My favourite thing is to spend days exploring the hidden parts of Goa on a bicycle or scooty."

My mother is literally paranoid about how much boho shopping I do in Goa. I go nuts at the flea markets buying earrings I'll probably only wear once! But I love chatting with the women who make and sell these gypsy necklaces and beady stuff. I end up buying like crazy! [SIC]"

THE GREAT RANN OF KUTCH,

Gujarat

The great Rann of Kutch is a colossal stretch of cracked earth, inland from the sea, that all but promises to stun you with its sheer beauty. The emptiness for kilometres on end is both overwhelming and spectacular at the same time. Dotted with small oasis and shrub forests doubling as abodes for pink flamingos and wild asses. Familial settlements with cylindrical mud huts are the epicentre for the famous Kutchi embroidery, tie and dye, leatherwork, pottery, bell metal craft and the famous Rogan painting by the only surviving artisan family. The area was once a rambling shoal of the Arabian Sea until a continual geological shift shut the connection to the sea. Head to Kutch in Gujarat for the peace and serenity of its vast nothingness that lends it a beauty like none other.

Pachmarhi,

Madhya Pradesh

Famously called Satpura Ki Rani (Queen of Satpura) Pachmarhi is nestled amongst the Satpura Ranges. Snuggled between dense forests and hills, Pachmarhi remains undiscovered for long. Captain James Forsyth finally stumbled upon it in 1857. A rich past and nature’s plenty makes Pachmarhi a popular destination for history zealots. The Pandavas caves are a popular legendary attraction. From mystical sites, flowing waterfalls to scenic vantage points, Pachmarhi has something for everyone. Besides scenic beauty, for the adventurous, like a jeep safari in the Satpura tiger reserve and para-motoring in the heart of Pachmarhi adds an element of thrill to your journey. If ancient architecture is an interest, then Christ Church, a structure from the colonial age should not be missed.

Green Intentions

Travel to care

As responsible tourism becomes the buzzword among travellers, here are a few niche and green properties in India that are promoting the thought.

64

January 2022

New-age and well-informed travellers are becoming aware of the environmental impact of their holidays. This is why premium vacations are increasingly becoming synonymous with responsible travelling. The buzzword in the tourism industry, thus, is conscious or transformative travel. So who is a conscious traveller and what does transformative travel mean? This is a person who seeks a niche experience but without disrupting the ecosystem. We bring you a list of exclusive resorts in India, which are seamlessly blending comfort with conscious responsibility. Be inspired!

The Tamara Kodai, Kodaikanal,

Tamil Nadu Nestled in the green hills of Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, sits Tamara resort, a beautifully restored 200-year old colonial monastery. Staying true to its original design, the property has been restored using recycled materials, like wood from abandoned railway tracks used as flooring. The property employs locally, and makes sure that its guests are sensitised about the beautiful shola forests, which surround it. "Our in-house naturalists guide guests through forest treks, informing them about the natural heritage," says Shruti Shibulal, CEO of Tamara Leisure Experience. Adding: “Travellers are more demanding now – they seek a sense of the place and its people along with an assurance that their visit is benefiting the community.” Green points: The resort uses only solar power for heating and is also completely plastic-free. Only filtered water in glass bottles is used and single-use slippers have given way to reusable sterilised ones.

65

Coco Shambhala, Sindhudurg,

Maharashtra Sindhudurg, on the stunning Konkan coast in Maharashtra, is an undiscovered jewel. And the crowning jewel is Coco Shambhala, a low-emission and low-waste resort. Not just eco-friendly, it involves the local community in its work and profit. A steelframed temporary structure, the four-villa property claims that no JCB or crane was used in its construction. “This was done to reduce our environmental impact and allow us the flexibility to dismantle the houses without leaving any footprint,” says Giles Knapton, the resort's British owner, who is also educating villagers on waste disposal, and sensitising guests about the natural heritage of Sindhudurg. Green points: The property promotes low-impact responsible tourism through measures like non-permanent construction, the use of solar power, natural resources for passive cooling, and furniture made with locally sourced coconut wood. Even the meals served are mostly cooked with local products!

66

January 2022

Coconut Lagoon, Kumarakom,

Kerala Spending time at one of India’s largest inland water bodies, Vembanad lake should be on the list of responsible tourists for sure. While the lake supports a plethora of natural life, the hotel follows the principles of sustainable tourism to help the local population. A solar-powered boat, a biomass digester, and eight acres of onsite rice cultivation are just some of the green measures adopted by this resort. It organises a fortnightly village clean-up and plays a major role in the conservation of the Vechoor cow, the smallest breed of the animal in the world. Green points: The cottages here have been built by local artisans from remnants of 'tharavads' or old mansions of the region. The property also nurtures a piece of "pristine forest" within its boundary.

The Rakkh Resort, Dharamshala,

Himachal Pradesh Head to the foothills of the mighty Himalayas to spend time at this sustainability-aware and experiential resort in Dharamshala. Offering stunning views of the Himalayas, the Rakkh Resort is a serene mountain getaway. Constructed using local materials such as slate, cane and bamboo, this resort works closely with the local municipal corporation to ensure none of the waste generated in and around the locality enters the nearby stream Neugal Khad. “For us, sustainability is about responsible stewardship of the environment," says Rajat Rialch, its founder. Green points: Apart from replacing glass and plastic bottles with healthier copper ones, the resort also grows some of the raw materials for meals.

Corporate Social Responsibility - IndiGoReach

Power to Women (WATER Project) As part of one of our CSR initiatives to empower women, IndiGoReach, in association with Pradan, has implemented the WATER (Women Collectives led Action Towards Environment Rejuvenation) project. The project focuses on capacity building, and enhancing the income of more than 37,000 women in the rural areas of Hazaribagh, Godda and Bokaro districts of Jharkhand through agricultural and allied activities. The project has created opportunities for the women by collectivising and training them. They have also been oriented towards better agricultural practices, usage of financial inclusion programmes and several Government schemes. So far, the project has enabled women to increase their average annual income from approximately INR 59,000 in 2017-18 to INR 89,000 in 202021. The financial gain has empowered these women to raise their voice against domestic violence, child marriage and other social evils, winning them more respect from their families and society. A coffee table book, titled WATER, featuring the success stories of some of these women, was recently launched in Ranchi. While the women have gained the status of role models in their community, we hope their stories as captured in the book, will inspire many more.
