THE POWER OF POSITIVITY

In an inspiring interview, the founder & Managing Trustee of SSVM Group of Institutions, Coimbatore, Dr Manimekalai Mohan, shares valuable advice on cultivating positivity. Read on for inspiring takeaways:

We all know that a positive attitude helps overall well-being and growth and offers a joyful life. However, sustaining positivity is a challenge.

Can you share your viewpoint?

a delight. They are fearless, selfless, and have a dynamic persona. Through my experience as an edupreneur, I have come across a few inspiring personalities who are always eager to help, serve, share, and sacrifice to benefit others. They have an interesting perspective on life and society. They believe in collective growth and ensure the well-being of everyone around them.

Here’s How You Can Stay Optimistic in 2023 For A Great Year Ahead

The earth has made another orbit around the sun, and it’s time for another new year! We are already three years into the new decade, and how can we all forget how 2020 stumped all of us in the form of Coronavirus? Yet, in the last two to three years, the world has learned and unlearned many things, developed a distinct perspective, accepted countless challenges, and overcame them.

Ever thought about what keeps this world running even in the wake of the greatest fears and doubts? Positivity! Keeping a positive outlook for a lifetime is something every child should learn at an early age. How do we practice it?

Yes. It is only possible to stay optimistic under some circumstances. It is natural to feel disappointed, discouraged, and even depressed if things don’t work out our way. However, by keeping a positive attitude, developing encouraging perspectives, and being optimistic, one can remain hopeful and pragmatic. Make self-regulation and self-control a way of life to gain a grip over emotions.

For children to develop an optimistic outlook on life, what are the essential traits they need to learn? Peace, compassion, love, and cooperation are admirable virtues. Parents, teachers, and society have an immense responsibility to nurture each child, and we should always imbibe these qualities. The most effective way to do it is to lead by example. Remember, kids tend to emulate the behaviour of elders in the family and teachers in school, and they learn from their immediate surroundings. One should practice these qualities before asking a child to know them.

How does staying hopeful or positive help an individual? People with a positive attitude are

What are the powers of a positive person?

For starters, there is nothing extracelestial about it! Individuals with an optimistic outlook on life are very tolerant, adapt quickly to new circumstances, are precise decision makers, non-judgemental, courageous, and they cooperate with patience. They practice all of this with profound humility.

What can one do to overcome feelings of discouragement and disappointment? Can you tell us how to swing back to being happy and positive?

It is natural to feel bogged down but do not let that feeling overpower you. Remember how much you love yourself and how much you believe in yourself while living through tough times. Be open to forgiveness, rely on family and friends for support, and pray often. Remember that success results from intelligent efforts and life is a mirror reflection of what we put into it. Keep your chin up. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

HERE'S TO HAPPINESS

L et’s start the New Year with a smile. And who better to keep the happiness quotient high but stand-up comedians! Four popular Indian entertainers share tips on how to stay happy and which travel destination makes them beam.

24 January 2023
Words Shruti Tomar

Anu Menon

FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION

“I don’t believe in favouritism because I like to explore different countries. But Paris holds a special place in my heart because it was my lifelong dream to watch Rafael Nadal play in the French Open and I got to do that this year. Ticked off my bucket list!”

HOW TO KEEP THE HAPPINESS QUOTIENT HIGH IN 2023?

"Someone once said, 'Be happy with what you have. Be excited about what you want.' I think that's a good mantra to take into the new year."

Anu Menon did her Masters in Drama from London and moved to Mumbai to pursue her first love – the stage. For eight years, she was better known by her alter ego, the bespectacled, Kanjeevaram and gajra-sporting VJ Lola Kutty on Channel V. Her stage credits include Lilette Dubey’s Sammy, Raell Padamsee’s Noises Off, Divya Palat’s A Personal War (that won at the Edinburgh Theatre festival), One on One – Part 1 and 2 by Rage Productions and the play God of Carnage. She does stand-up shows as well, and opened for Brad Sherwood and Colin Mochrie – of the popular US TV show Whose Line is it Anyway fame – on their India tour. Her stand-up special Wonder Menon is the first Indian female special to feature on Amazon Prime Video. She was also a part of Jestination Unknown with actor-comedian Vir Das. Recently, she was seen on Comicstaan S3 as a mentor.

Sahil Shah is one of India’s top comedians and a founding member of India’s premier comedy collective East India Comedy. Describing himself as a “pun master, comedian and occasional time-traveller”, his comedy is observational and filled with smart one-liners. Over the last decade, his stand-up videos have garnered tremendous views. He's done more than 1,500 shows and has performed at the Global Citizen Festival for 80,000 people!

After a sold-out tour of 25 cities across four countries, he created his first stand-up special Childish Behaviour (Amazon Prime Video). He is currently touring with his new show!

FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION

"I visited Andaman and Nicobar Islands for a diving trip and was absolutely blown away. I saw the best sunset of my life and if I ever want to be 'sun-kissed', I hope to be kissed by that sunset, multiple times. Travelling in Andamans is like seeing life in full saturation. The water is bright blue, trees are deep green and the underwater life is so colourful that it looks like a computer screensaver! It's the best place to go off-grid. Nothing screams solitude quite like being cut off from the outside world and being surrounded by natural beauty, and that can be experienced in Andaman.”

Look out for: The Cellular Jail, Chidiya Tapu, Munda Pahad, Viper Island and Jolly Buoy Island.

HOW TO KEEP THE HAPPINESS QUOTIENT HIGH IN

“Once when my family took a trip to Russia, we were stopped by the Russian immigration. They went through our bags and pulled out some tonics (that we had 'picked up' from the lounge); Indian snacks that we had to explain and a lota [small, round water pot] that we could not explain!”

“I have lived with comedy and humour all my life. They are my escape from the pains of reality and are how I make sense of life around me. I learnt to laugh at myself a long time ago. There is an inexplicable thrill that comes from making others laugh. Talking to local people is the best thing about travelling because you get to hear so many amazing stories, and stand-up comedy is all about stories! She is also a beauty and makeup enthusiast and has featured in an advertising campaign for a global skincare and beauty giant, and was the face of a series called Man Up by Rise by TLC.

FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION

“My favourite holiday destination is London because it’s got something for every kind of traveller. I love to take in the sights and sounds of a city through walking, and London is an incredibly walkable city. Each time you visit, there is something new to see. Within India, Rajasthan is a wonderful holiday destination because it’s a beautiful amalgamation of the past and the present.”

HOW TO KEEP THE HAPPINESS QUOTIENT HIGH IN

FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION

“Bangkok is my favourite! Look, I’m a city boy, and while the idea of forest hiking and star gazing from a cave in Coorg sounds very good, deep inside my heart I’m happiest when in a bustling and overcrowded city. I am happy when I hear impatient honking! I love cities like Mumbai, Bangkok, Hong Kong and New York!”

HOW TO KEEP THE HAPPINESS QUOTIENT HIGH IN 2023?

"A few years ago, I went to Disneyland, USA, with my family. We booked a hotel right across the street from Disneyland. But there's a 16-lane-highway in between. Which meant, we needed to hike to a sky walk and then walk back after crossing, a walk of around 3 km. My parents decided to cross the road and jump over the divider. I was literally crying and begging them to stop. But they started screaming at me, 'everything your parents do is embarrassment, no?' Suddenly, a cop pulled up. I was scared of what would happen next but the cop sweetly gave them a lift across the highway to Disneyland. As for me? I had to walk because there was no more space in the car!”

Mumbai boy Raunaq Rajani has been doing stand-up comedy acts for a decade. A finalist on Comicstaan S2, he has been a part of several television shows and has a YouTube show that has got millions of views. Having worked as a writer with East India Comedy, today, he juggles between being a quick-witted comic host, writer and a dog father.

Neela Muniraj

My kids surprised me with a ticket to my first flight!

“I could never be a kid, you know? I was just 8 when I had to start working alongside Amma as a domestic help… Appa was an alcoholic who neglected us. So, it was Amma and I who raised my 4 siblings and ensured that they got to be kids.

Then a decade later, Amma arranged my marriage to Muniraj, which brought a new chapter in my life. He always found ways to make me smile—whether it was bringing home my favourite snacks or taking me for ice-cream dates! In 2 years, our family grew when we had 3 kids.

But then, Muniraj got diagnosed with brain cancer. I was shattered! I had to draw on my inner strength to keep my family together. Once again, I took up domestic work.

For the next year and half, I’d wake up at 4:30 am for work, take Muniraj for his treatment, do a second job and spend nights taking care of him. But no matter how hard I fought, his cancer won. And we were drowning in debt. I thought, ‘I won’t survive this!’ But I wanted to give my kids a better life.

I worked 3 jobs as Amma looked after them. Eventually, they grew up, began earning and got settled. And when they said, ‘Amma, you rest, we’ll take it from here!’ I felt a weight lifting off my shoulders—at 42, I could finally breathe…

For the first time, I began living for myself—I cooked, spent time with my family and even went out! It was more than I’d ever imagined. But my kids and son-in-law had bigger plans for me. One day, they surprised me, saying, ‘We’re taking a flight to Thiruvananthapuram!’ I was awestruck. All my life, it’d been a luxury I couldn't afford to dream of, and now I was about to fly for the first time!

That day, I was bubbling with enthusiasm. Sitting at the window seat, I felt my heart beating fast as the plane took off. I was squeezing my daughter's hand hard… Until I spotted the clouds—I felt like I was in heaven!

Today, at 45, I dare to dream. My kids remind me there will always be days to rejoice. So now, I look forward to the day I take Amma on a flight and see the same joy in her eyes!”

Skyline Elephantine

A mammoth marvel unfolds calmly at the Chandaka Sanctuary along the Eastern Ghats in Odisha.

Chandaka, literally, means moonlight. The evening I arrived at the Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary, it was bathed in the light of the full moon of Buddha Purnima and the Svanir homestay, with its peaceful mural of the Enlightened One, welcomed me with its wild, open arms. Chandaka was also the charioteer of Lord Buddha, and in this case, a guide to a limitless land of natural wisdom and wealth.

The Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Odisha's best-kept secrets. Tucked in a quaint, quiet corner of Bhubaneswar, its gentle yet strong elephants are a reminder to live life at your own pace and fill your heart with nature as you preserve, admire and embody it. The sanctuary is lush green with sal thickets, hillocks, bamboo and a lotus-filled lake, and its serene environs build a landscape of dream for the worldwearied soul.

Equally heartening is how far it has been kept from the holidayers’ hype, summoning only those who are ready to immerse themselves in the hidden wonders of a largely unexplored jungle, which comes with its own whims. Early in the morning, as you arrive at the park gates, there is – inspired by its elephantine residents – no hurry among the foresters. They urge patience as you await your safari; and once the mammoth

jeep embarks on the enchantment, you are ready to be carried afloat the wind. The trail winds over picturesque hillocks bathed in red soil and flanked by kangada, sal, bamboo, teak and siddha trees, and the cool breeze lulls you into a sweet daze.

One is refreshed with the greeting of not just magnificent tuskers but also other beautiful beasts – chital, barking deer, wild boar and langur. If you are lucky, you just may run into a civet, a pangolin, a sloth bear and birds like crested serpent eagle, black-headed oriole, paradise flycatcher or coucal!

The wild tuskers, meandering across the vast Chandaka-Dampara forest corridors, and not always in human sight, are all named and numbered, and the news of their whereabouts, health and other stories spread quick. The local communities and wildlife associates are committed to the task of conservation – treating the giants like children. The woods seem suffused with their spirit – majestic, unperturbed and abundant, embracing of the entire ecosystem as family and communicating through vibrations.

One of the particularly striking surprises is an enormous anthill of human height and in the unmistakable shape of a fairytale palace. Home to the feisty brown fire ants, the

At the end of the safari you arrive at the shore of the Kumarkhunti reservoir, teeming with lush lotuses and flowing into the horizon. The lake, too, is a reflection of the peace of the pachyderm, as was my kind host and the family. I took a few moments to sit on a far lookout; we all soaked in the silence and moments of eternity. In the distance, a bird called, harking us back to reality. But one can never return the same.

The one-acre retreat has only about 10 per cent construction and the rest has been left untouched and is a small forest. L ucerne’s Old Town is a great place to shop for Swiss chocolates, cowbells, Swiss knives as well as the world-famous Swiss watches.

Lucerne, an idyllic lakeside town with an endearing medieval flair, is the perfect getaway to Switzerland’s snow-capped mountains and luxurious alpine resorts. Whether it is skiing down the slopes of scenic Engelberg, snowshoe hiking on the lofty Mt. Pilatus or walking on one of Europe’s highest suspension bridges at Mt. Titlis, Lucerne and its outskirts offer a plethora of adventurous escapades to the intrepid traveller. Add to that an atmospheric old town filled with fairy lights and vivacious carnivals, and you cannot ignore the charm of Lucerne in winters.

Lucerne is a picturesque Swiss city nestled by the shores of an eponymous aqua-blue mountain lake. The city is surrounded by glistening glaciers and towering summits interspersed by chocolate-box villages. The majestic Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Titlis are just a stone’s throw away, making for an easy day trip. Mt. Pilatus is also home to the world's steepest cogwheel railway (it runs from May to November). At the heart of Lucerne is Altstadt (Old Town), packed with colourful homes and cobbled streets, making it one of the prettiest such in Europe.

In winter, Lucerne turns into a fairyland with snowy mountains and sweeping white vistas. This is the best time to head to the world-class ski resorts of Engelberg that are blessed with fabulous pistes and endless descents. Even if you are not into skiing, you will enjoy a ride on the Titlis Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car, and love exploring the intriguing Rhone Glacier Ice Grotto. The thrill of walking on the Titlis Cliff Walk at 10,000 ft is unparalleled! Lucerne from an altitude of almost 7,000 ft. Once you’re up there, enjoy the snowscapes and dig into some delicious fondue at the Pilatus-Kulm restaurant. If you are up for some excitement, try snowshoe hiking on the beginner trails here.

When you are back in the city, be sure to stroll through Old Lucerne’s cobblestone streets that are dotted with beautiful buildings - many with fresco-adorned facades and quaint water fountains. One of these streets will lead you to the poignant Lion Monument that honours the Swiss guardsmen who died in 1792 during the French Revolution.

Head to the waterfront promenade for a leisurely stroll and experience the joy of luxury window shopping. Or opt for a castle tour and marvel at the fairy-tale chateaux surrounding Lake Lucerne.

Perhaps, the most emblematic attraction of Lucerne is the 14th century Kapellbrücke, or the Chapel Bridge, that straddles River Reuss. The bridge, along with the adjoining Water Tower, has a long and eventful past. Today, it is the best place to get a whiff of Lucerne’s history through the unique triangular pictureframes that adorn the bridge’s ceiling. On a cold wintry day, walking through the Kapellbrücke covered with fresh snow feels nothing short of enchanted.

Winter is a time of celebration in Lucerne. While December’s Christmas markets fill the city with the aroma of mulled wine and baked cinnamon cookies, January’s Lilu Light Festival illuminates the whole town with artistic installations and vivid light shows. An evening walk through Lucerne’s winter lights is sure to appeal to your senses. If you are here in February, don’t miss the big fat six-day long Lucerne Carnival that is filled with colours, dance and music.

Spectacular alpine landscapes, a storied history with a rich culture and an amalgam of architectural delights make Lucerne a coveted travel destination. Discover the Old Town’s hidden gems, relish mouthwatering Swiss chocolates and watch a breathtaking sunset by the river. With winter carnivals, balmy summers and golden autumns, this ‘City of Lights’ shines in every season. But in winter, Lucerne casts a magic spell!

Rick Leonardi

Hello, Mr. Spider Man

erican comic book illustrator

Leonardi

Rick Leonardi began his career in 1981 with Marvel Comics' title Thor The soft-spoken artist behind many of Marvel's superheroes, including Spider-Man, X-Men, Cloak and Dagger, New Mutants, Hulk and many more, Leonardi published his first work for DC Comics in the 1980s in The New Teen Titans. Later, he worked on titles like Batman, Birds of Prey, Justice League, Batgirl and many more. He also has worked on such feature film tie-in comics as General Grievous from Star Wars and Superman Returns prequels. He is credited, along with fellow illustrator Mike Zeck, for designing Spider-Man's black-and-white costume. Interestingly, he is credited for influencing the creation of Venom as well!

Leonardi was in India recently, visiting New Delhi for a special session at Comic Con 2022. Here's what he had to say about comics, illustrations and an Indian Spider-Man!

This is the first time you are in India. How would you describe your experience? India is fascinating. Every minute there's something new and unexpected that happens. I had heard a lot about India and its culture, but now that I am here, I can say it's a unique adventure, one, that has to be experienced first-hand. In short, it's a trip!

You have been a comic illustrator for over two decades now. What started this journey?

I've loved comics since I was around six years old. But unlike other children, who would only read them, I started drawing them. As I grew up, I knew I had to work for either Marvel or DC. I really didn't have a backup plan after college.

How did you prepare for this career? As I grew older, I got interested in the fore-bearers of comics - the people who had started the revolution! So, I collected reprints of classic comic books, all the way

back to Winsor McCay (American cartoonist who created Little Nemo in Slumberland), Alexander Raymond (American cartoonist known for creating Flash Gordon) and Harold Foster (Canadian-American cartoonist who created the comic strip Prince Valiant) and so forth. It's unfortunate that most youngsters today are not aware of the legacy of comics.

What cemented your dream of working with comics?

It was a magazine by DC called Star-Spangled War Stories drawn by Joe Kubert (legendary illustrator best known for his work on the DC Comics characters Sgt. Rock and Hawkman). I was absolutely awe-struck by the illustrations and decided that's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life!

How does the process of creating these fantastic superheroes begin?

I stand between the writer and the reader. I transcribe and bring to life for the reader what the writer wants to convey. There are various kinds of techniques and terminology to execute each. A lot of it is derived from and married to cinema. We use a lot of the same kind of terminology as cinematographers do. Simply drawing a picture is not enough. What challenges me is figuring out which picture to draw first.

Fans are hinting that there's going to be a Spider-Man versus Venom soon. Any thoughts on this speculation?

I don't know about what Marvel has in mind. But looking at Marvel's trajectory of Spider-Man's story, it seems possible.

What are you working on next?

I am in contact with the makers of the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Across the

Spider-Verse by Sony that is to be released in 2023. It has multiple Spideys and is the animated cinematic version of the titular character in the comic, Spider-Man 2099 Among its highlights are Spider-Man 2099 (voiced by Oscar Isaac), a pregnant SpiderWoman (voiced by Issa Rae), Peter B. Parker as a father and more.

The trailer of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse shows a glimpse of an Indian version. Your thoughts?

Pavitr Prabhakar, the Spider-Man who resides in India, has an interesting look. But I didn't create him. However, I have worked with Neeraj Menon, the colourist of SpiderMan 2099. He is amazing!

What is the future of comic art?

The future will include Artificial Intelligence. It's going to be interesting to see how a computer can turn a story being narrated into a series of comprehensible illustrations.
