Fernweh
(German): An ache for distant places and missing destinations you have never been to. It is craving for travel!
As we step into a brand-new year, we give in to our travel cravings. In the January issue of Hello 6E, we explore the enchanting world of " fernweh," a German term that encapsulates the profound yearning for far-off places — a sentiment that has become the latest trend in the realm of travel. The pages of this magazine are adorned with tales of wanderlust, beckoning you to explore the uncharted and revel in untold experiences. In our Offbeat section, embark on a journey to three winter destinations that defy the conventional. From the mystical land of red pandas and rhododendrons to a mesmerising coral walk, these off-grid Indian locales are not just local gems but undiscovered havens for many seeking the extraordinary.
In our DoubleTake feature, we present two paradises that demand a closer look. One, a seaside haven in Vietnam, celebrated among the world's top 100 islands. The other, a subtropical dream in Portugal, often referred to as the 'Pearl of the Atlantic.' Our Vignette section transports you to the breathtaking Mount Kinabalu in Borneo. Revered by locals, this well-known mountain peak not only challenges mountaineers but also boasts an extraordinary tapestry of biodiversity.
In AceCorner, we strike a conversation with singer Nick Jonas, who is set to perform live in India. Another celebrity, actor Sobhita Dhulipala, takes us around her town Visakhapatnam. As you flip through these pages, let the spirit of fernweh ignite your imagination and inspire your next great adventure. Happy travels and happy new year! #goIndiGo!

Flight safety is one of the most important aspects for us and for you as a passenger. For us it's not only the slogan of Safety First; we really try to live it in our day-to-day operations. Welcome aboard! Wishing you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR from 6E family on our expanding network both domestically and internationally! As we are entering into the league of the top airlines globally, with reaching 100 million customers in CY 2023. So congratulations to all of you and thanking for choosing IndiGo. A total of 37000+ colleagues are responsible for delivering the services you expect from us. We hope to be a part of your journey every time you think of opening your wings to the sky. Working immensely to fulfill our overarching pillars of work: Hassle free and courteous service, On-time performance and Affordable fares with a comprehensive network. Being responsible for operations is a task which is far reaching and covering many aspects of the company. Just to highlight some areas: Flight safety is one of the most important aspects for us and for you as a passenger. For us it's not only the slogan of Safety First; we really try to live it in our day-to-day operations. The aviation industry is highly regulated when it comes to safety, (safety on flight or safety on ground) both for our passengers and employees. Adherence to safety standards and regulations is a top priority for us. Any safety policy starts with the proper risk assessment of reducing the exposure to risks as much as possible. We also make sure of any circumstantial need for medical assistances on board. Having enough qualified pilots is one of the key responsibilities of operations, in terms of qualifications

criteria to be fulfilled, considering the current prevailing weather situation. We are continuously preparing our pilots for that. Cabin crew is another area where we concentrated a lot of our efforts and I hope you enjoy the efforts of our crew on the flight. We also have embarked on additional features eg. welcoming our passengers under the slogan India by Indigo which has been well received and special wow moments for our passengers. Our AOCS colleagues are fully devoted to making our travel as standardized as possible and for quick turnarounds in efficient way using modern technology and sustainable ground equipment. You must have seen in many airports our 3-door embarkation for faster deplaning of passengers thus making the operations smoother. Our engineers have full commitment in ensuring that our aircraft only departs after thorough checks be it systems or engines. This becomes even more important as we have expanded to wide international markets. All this needs continuous training and preparation of our whole 37000+ 6E members. Training, at ifly, can never stop and we have fulfilled this philosophy even in the Covid period and continue doing it for our holistic customer experience. Our operations control center ensures 24*7 coverage of our operations in all aspects. And, our corporate affairs team ensures that we fulfill all the criteria of a regulated industry efficiently.

Pangolakha, Sikkim
As the mist dissipates, the distant treetops gradually emerge into focus, revealing the opulent tapestry of the Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary. Bathed in the morning sunlight, the dense foliage of ancient oak forests sparkles like nature's jewels. Within this untouched realm, that is home to red pandas and rhododendrons, Pangolakha stands as a testament to the wonders of the natural world. Perched on one edge of Sikkim, this sanctuary seamlessly connects with the Neora Valley National Park in West Bengal and Bhutan's forests, forming a vital ecological zone. The picturesque forest is dotted by high-altitude lakes and adorned with dense bamboo thickets — the latter, a favoured abode of the elusive red panda, Sikkim's state animal. Recently, a Royal Bengal tiger was spotted here, making it one of the highest elevations, where a tiger has been seen in India.
The nearest airport to Pangolakha is Pakyong, around 70 km away.
The quaint Kupup village with its elephant-shaped lake, is around 17 km from here.

Pangolakha is a thriving birding zone. Expect elusive sightings of the blood pheasant, Himalayan monal and many other species of birds. Winter (DecemberJanuary) sees the Red Panda Winter Festival held in Gangtok, Sikkim, where culture, harmony, conservation and ethnic food are celebrated, bringing together both locals and tourists.
With the advent of the warmer season, the forest undergoes a breathtaking transformation, as the radiant colours of blooming rhododendrons overwhelm the once-dominant green. Nearby is Dzuluk (Zuluk) a small hamlet that has become popular for offering stunning views of the eastern Himalayan mountain range, including Mt. Khangchendzonga; best experienced from the Thambi View Point, just 14 km away. Once a transit point to the historic Silk Route from Tibet to India, today, Dzuluk and its nearby forested areas are popular among nature-lovers and birdwatchers.

The Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve, protected by UNESCO, is located on the southwestern tip of Vietnam. It comprises 105 islands, the biggest of which is Phu Quoc Island.

If you want, you can also fly over the turquoise water from Phu Quoc to Hon Thom island in the Hon Thom Cable Car, among the world's longest such rides. Gastronomy Phu Quoc is famous for its piquant peppers and fish sauce, the latter used in almost every dish. Visit the pepper plantations and fish sauce factories scattered around the island to learn how these flavour-charged
products are made. Like the rest of Vietnam, Phu Quoc is a gastronomic heaven. Opt for hyperlocal dishes like Vietnamese paper rolls and crepes bursting with fresh herbs, vegetables and meats. Seafood fresh from the ocean, ripe tropical fruits, aromatic herbs and spices find their way into many of the dishes. Do try salads made with banana flowers, lotus root, pomelo and green mango.

With a breathtaking landscape warmed by the Atlantic sun, crystal-clear waters perfect for a splash and soak, age-old traditions and a burst of local flavours, Madeira is often hailed as the “Island of Eternal Spring”. Island tour The best way to explore the island is in a rented car. Navigating along winding roads, every bend unveils picturesque villages that appear straight out of a postcard. Pause at the charming cafes, indulge in an espresso, and feast your eyes on sweeping views of lush landscapes. A highly recommended pitstop is Cabo Girão, offering a mild adventure where you can stroll on a glass skywalk at the edge of a high cliff — one of the loftiest in Europe. On the northern coast stands the town of Porto da Cruz, a haven for adventure sports enthusiasts. The consistent swell and black sands of Alagoa and Maiata, the two main beaches here, offer excellent conditions for both beginner and intermediatelevel surfing. The quaint Engenho Do Norte, one of the last living testimonies of the historical sugar production on the island, is a mustvisit. Established in 1927, it still operates with machinery from that era to produce sugarcane spirit, or rum! The air carries the rich aroma of aged rum, a testament to the island's time-honoured craft.

Landing Live Singer Nick Jonas has often expressed his enthusiasm about performing in India and finally, it seems he will be crooning in the country. Words Tina Singh

January 2024
He has made charming appearances in Indian attire. We have seen him taking part in Indian festivals and proclaiming his love for paneer and dosa. He has even crooned a Hindi song in an album. But for the first time, popular American singer Nick Jonas is set to perform live in India, cheered on by his wife, Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra (the singer is set to rock the stage at the second edition of Lollapalooza India in January 2024). Here's a quick chat with the charismatic Jonas brother, who is very well aware that he is playfully referred to as jiju (brother-in-law) in India. How is the anticipation of performing in India for the first time like? I have had impromptu singing sessions at friends' and family meet-ups in India, but this is the first time I will be singing in front of an audience. I do have an idea of what gets Indian audiences grooving, but having said that, there is a fair amount of anxiety, anticipation and excitement. I do not want to go wrong or my wife will never forgive me (laughs)! Did Priyanka Chopra have a role in convincing you? I did not need convincing. India has a wonderful audience that knows and understands music. But she did put the idea in my head. And when I was approached by the event organisers, it did not take me long to agree.
my favourite snacks! We try and make samosa at home too, but it just doesn’t taste the same! Priyanka has had such a profound impact on me, and I am so grateful she introduced me to this culture and hand-holds me through everything! I feel so blessed. I have started watching Indian movies and even listening to various types of Indian music. I am amazed by the talent in this country and I love the admiration I receive when I am visiting! It's great to hear the many nicknames I have in India! I am the country's brother-in-law (laughs)! You both are very fond of travelling. Which are the Indian destinations you want to explore? I have been to Rajasthan and Goa, but like a casual tourist. After we got married in Rajasthan, I realised I had only seen it superficially. I was blown away when we returned with families post our wedding. Other than that, it would be a dream-come-true if our schedules can match, and we have enough time to explore the length and breadth of India by road. I would absolutely love to do that. I am hoping to travel a little bit this time when I come.
"I want to enjoy a winter in Punjab, explore the rustic countryside and try sugarcane and jaggery sweets."
Any specific Indian experiences on your bucket list? I want to enjoy a winter in Punjab! I definitely want to explore the rustic countryside and try sugarcane and the sweets made with jaggery.
You have worked with Indian singer King on the music video “Maan Meri Jaan”. What was that experience like? It has been absolutely incredible to see audiences around the world enjoy my collaboration with King. I had so much fun working with him on the song and the video - not only as an artiste but also as a fan of King. He is really talented and extremely easy to work with. I’m so proud of this collaboration and the way it portrays everlasting love.
How has your daughter changed your life? Her arrival has altered every aspect of my life. Life is much more intense now. It’s about trying to be as present as possible and as thoughtful as I can be for my family, but also for other people. I’m so grateful for the responsibility and the wonderful perspective of being a parent. I love the fact that she has multicultural roots and will hopefully, be a citizen of the world that has immense love for everyone! In fact, this is also an aspect of India I like. People are so warm and welcoming. I admire the way Indians embrace and include everyone into their fold.
Besides music, what else do you find charming about India? You mean besides music and my wife!? (laughs) There is just so much to explore, and I know so little about this wonderful country! I love the local food - the rajma and rice, and also kadhi! I would choose jalebi and samosa as
Any more collaborations or work that you are looking forward to with Indian filmmakers or musicians? I would love to, but let's see if they find any potential in me! I would be happy to meet as many people from the industry as I can. That is definitely on my agenda on this trip.

The forest is home to carnivorous pitcher plants, which have a modified leaf for trapping and digesting insects. Several species of these are unique to Mount Kinabalu. Here is the Nepenthes Villosa, or the villose pitcher plant.
The mountain hosts a large variety of animals and birds, including squirrels, wild pigs, monkeys and the unique grey-blue giant earthworm and the coralhued giant red leech. It is said the Kinabalu Park World Heritage property records almost half of all Borneo’s birds, mammals and amphibian species.

Tasting success with Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam films, actor Sobhita Dhulipala became a household name with the web-series Made in Heaven. But the self-confessed nerd in school, says she didn't dream of stardom while growing up in Visakhapatnam. 56

Words Sharmi Adhikary
Sobhita Dhulipala, the actor who has been a rage with her work in films like Raman Raghav 2.0 and Kaalakaandi, and became a household name after starring in the webseries Made in Heaven and The Night Manager. She was also seen in Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2. But while growing up in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh, to a merchant navy engineer father and a school teacher mother, Dhulipala couldn't have imagined that one day she would be one of the most recognised actors in tinsel town. In school, she was a book nerd and a Bharatnatyam dancer apart from dabbling in several extra-curricular activities. The Tenaliborn actress was also the vice-captain of her school. Dhulipala possibly didn’t foresee the fame even when she was flooring judges at beauty pageants. (She won the Femina Miss India Earth 2013 and was Kingfisher Calendar Girl 2014). But do the laurels surprise her? “It’s been both a privilege and pleasure to be able to do what I deeply care about and love - storytelling. I’m glad that the creative risks I’ve taken have been received with love and cheer,” says the actress. When you delve into her repertoire of juggling onscreen characters of different strains, she might come across as a bit like Pramoda Reddy, the character she so flawlessly essayed in Major (the biopic on Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan), the hard worker who doesn’t give up easily. Perhaps it’s her training as an NCC cadet in her school years that geared Dhulipala to do all that she does when she’s not seeking solace in the hills travelling with her backpack. In an industry rife with cut-throat competition, Dhulipala displays an insatiable passion to stand out for the work she commits to. The scripts she chooses are neither runof-the-mill nor harp only on the physical attributes of a good looking individual like her. Instead, the meaty parts she signs allows her to showcase her skills as an actor who feels the pulse of the characters she plays. “My curiosity to explore gives me joy because it feeds my deep-seated desire to remain a student. I’m inspired that there is a story to discover in everyone and everything!” she explains. In this freewheeling conversation, she browses through her memories of Visakhapatnam, a place that instilled in her the creative trait to achieve what she sets her heart on.

The usual hangout spots with my school friends are Rushikonda (R.K.) Beach and Bheemili Beach. The ruins of a fort, armoury and a Dutch cemetery are preserved here. We drive by Rushikonda and keep planning to visit the beautiful Araku Valley.
It is called the 'City of Destiny', isn’t it? Over a period of time, I completely understand why. It’s got beaches, mountains, valleys, and a cinema-loving crowd that loves to live their sweet lives by the coast. It’s a beautiful land of calm and good vibes!
