WATER WORLD If you haven't experienced a monsoon houseboat trip, your India exploration can't be complete! As rains sweep the country, refreshing and rejuvenating the landscape, here are three houseboat cruises you should try. Words Shrabasti Banerjee

24

July 2022

What more? HIGHLIGHTS Apart from the Dal Lake, houseboats are also docked at the nearby Nigeen Lake and on River Jhelum.

DID YOU KNOW?

Text and images: kashmirhouseboats.net

In a Kashmiri houseboat, the lobby is known as metheab, the kitchen is called bushkan, the corridor is known as dorak and the drawing room is called khot.

Kashmir is stunning throughout the year. But during the rains, it takes on a mysterious hue, specially if you are on a houseboat at the Dal Lake in Srinagar. A stay in these stunning handcarved vessels moored on the lake against the backdrop of the lofty snow-capped Pir Panjal range is the experience of a lifetime. An intrinsic part of Kashmir's legacy, the houseboats typically boast five to six rooms, replete with hand-crafted wood furniture and handwoven local carpets. Food is mostly served on board. Do try a shikara ride across the lake, made more dramatic as dark clouds gather overhead! Dock by a floating restaurant to sip on steaming kahwa (local tea).

Dal Lake

Where: Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. Distance: Around one hour from Srinagar airport. When: Between April and October. Look out for: The floating post office on the lake is said to be the only of its kind in the world. Visit the philately museum and curio shop. 25

What more? HIGHLIGHTS 'Banbibi Jatra' - a musical performance - by locals during the trip, followed by a delicious meal of traditional dishes.

DID YOU KNOW? Sunderbans mangrove forest, one of the largest in the world, houses about 8 species of amphibians, 260 species of birds, and 50 species of reptiles!

The Sundarbans Where: West Bengal.

Distance: Kolkata to Gosaba is about 3 hours by road.

When: Throughout the year.

The home of the royal Bengal tiger; a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a green haven merely a few hours from the bustling city of Kolkata. The Sunderbans is all this and more! Enjoy a cruise through the heart of the vast delta with perhaps the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world. During monsoon, the mangroves look denser and the temperatures are extremely pleasant. From an air conditioned vessel to a regular one - the houseboats here offer modern-day amenities along with the best of regional cuisine and a chance to witness the diverse flora and fauna. If you are a fish lover, this is the season to enjoy a fresh hilsa!

Look out for: Local dwellers and fishermen. And if you are lucky, even a tiger! Text and images: sundarbanhouseboat.co.in

26

July 2022

What more? HIGHLIGHTS Book houseboats from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kasaragod. You can opt for a day cruise as well.

DID YOU KNOW? Champakkulam in the Alappuzha district hosts the annual Champakkulam Boat Race. This year, it is on July 12.

Backwaters Till you actually see one of the gigantic kettuvallams gliding across the palm-lined backwaters of Kerala, it's tough to believe how impressive these traditional-style wooden boats are. Cruising through the heart of rural Kerala, these houseboats offer all modern-day comforts. During monsoon, as the backwaters are refreshed and the shores take on deeper shades of green, a cruise holiday becomes even more exciting. The vessels are moored for a while if the rain gains intensity. Today's houseboats are reworked version of kettuvallams of yore and are built with natural materials like bamboo and areca nut wood for roofing, and coir mats and wooden planks for flooring.

Text: keralatourism.org

Where: Kerala

Distance: Alappuzha is around 2 hours away from Kochi airport. When: Kerala is an all year destination. Look out for: Enjoy Ayurvedic therapies and massages as the houseboats dock. Try local delicacies and refreshments from local boatmen. 27

Meandering in Miao Cradled amidst the majestic Patkai Bum range of Eastern Himalayas, Miao is the best destination to go off the grid. Words Hoihnu Hauzel

It’s 4.30 am and a golden dawn is lighting up the deep blue sky. I am walking down a quiet road in Miao along the banks of River Noa Dehing in Arunachal Pradesh. The air is clean and crisp. Every breath I take feels like tonic. LIFE IN MIAO Life in this sub-division of Arunachal’s Changlang district begins in the wee hours. I bump into Rehena as she sets about opening her dukan (shop). I buy myself some shampoo and coconut oil, and carry on with my little expedition. Soon, I chance upon Kiyang Kharong Singoho, a health assistant, who is on her morning walk. We get chatting. She is curious about where I am from as I am about her. She tells me of the different tribes

Located along the bank of river Noa Dehing or Burhi Dihing, a tributary of the Brahmaputra river in Upper Assam, Miao is the gateway to the famous Namdapha National Park. Considered to be a biodiversity hotspot in the Eastern Himalayas, Namdapha is home to over 1,000 floral and about 1,400 faunal species. As one of the country’s largest national parks, it has within it, the northernmost lowland evergreen rainforests in the world, with its gigantic, awe-inspiring dipterocarp trees. LOSING YOUR HEART TO

While the name Türkiye might be new to the world, it's a nod to how locals have long referred to their homeland. We travel to its capital and offer a fresh glimpse into some of its not-so-known heritage hotspots Words Lee Grewal and Bhanu Uttam When strolling through the streets of Istanbul, its immersive and pristine architecture weaves a beautiful book with spellbinding chapters of the city's 2,500-year-old history. If you have planned to visit Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Basilica Cistern and the Blue Mosque may already be on your 'must-see' list. But the rustic vibes one can enjoy while visiting the Old City or Sultanahmet are unparalleled. Walk the city walls The old walled city of Istanbul sits on the peninsula between Asia and Europe. It’s remarkable to think that a single city can

straddle two continents and the 15th July Martyrs Bridge, connecting the two, is just one of Istanbul’s many notable attractions. . The ancient Roman city walls, stretching from the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn, is a step back in time. These neighbourhoods are dotted with smokey teahouses, verdant courtyard gardens and busy narrow lanes that characterise Constantinople, as Istanbul was earlier known. Often dubbed as the Byzantine Walls, a short stroll through the magnificent long walls will take you to the former imperial palace,

Blachernae (Tekfur Sarayi). The palace once used to house the Byzantine emperor. Its impressive compound draws tourists who come to admire the exquisite Byzantineera mosaics and frescos of the Church of St. Saviour in Chora that served as a museum till 2020. You can also be enthralled with the magnificence and massive size of the Ottoman Mihrimah Mosque. The Grand Bazaar Along cobblestone pathways, follow the footsteps of merchants and traders who have walked the streets of Byzantine for centuries. In the hope of invigorating trade after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, the Grand Bazaar was built in the 15th century. One of the world's oldest marketplaces, the bazaar stood alongside the Sultan’s Palace and quickly grew into a bustling square. them. It’s as fun as it is frantic. Locals say it is a little tailored for the Western shopper, but there are still enough Turkish artefacts and local artisans weaving and telling stories, to make it an authentic Istanbul experience. Take the Spicy Route As the sun dips and the evening lights appear on the skyline, the view from Galata Bridge is spectacular. Crossing this modernday walkway into the historic quarter, the drawbridge is a lively cultural marketplace on its own. Street vendors selling local knick-knacks, floating kitchens, silhouettes of dangling fishing lines all characterise Galata. The old Spice Bazaar rambles around the foot of the bridge and fills your senses with plumes of evocative spices, tea and perfumes. There’s plenty to see in Galata, a must do is the Mevlevi House Museum and Cultural Centre with performances by whirling dervishes. Day tripping to Prince Islands Island-hopping is one of the most restful ways to escape the crowds and soak in the sunshine of the Turkish coastline. Prince Islands is an archipelago of nine islands southeast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. With their horse-drawn carriages, fresh sea air, white-walled buildings and canopies of pink bougainvillea blooms, the islands offer the tranquillity and peace of

The streets of Istanbul’s Old City burst with local flavours, music, wares and crafts that tell stories of the way life used to be. a true coastal holiday. Take a ferry from Bostancı, Kartal and Maltepe (on the Asian side of the city), and Kabataş on the European side. The four islands of Kınalıada, Burgazada, Heybeliada and Büyükada are the most frequently visited. Wondering how the Islands got their names? This is where notable members of the Imperial families were once exiled. Turkish Delight Though it’s easy to get caught in the thrum of the thriving markets, don’t forget to take in the grand architecture and gilt-edged surroundings while you search for a place to eat. There are plenty of cafes pressed tightly together, where the ambience comes from smoky grill plates and strings of eggplant hanging from the roof. Modern courtyard cafes and hole-in-the-wall restaurants fill the air with aromatic Turkish flavours, from kebabs and lahmacuns (a flatbread and meat dish) to kumpir (a style of baked potato) and simit (bread). Our tip? Book a food tour with a local guide to really enjoy the provincial flavours. Off the beaten track The neighbourhood of Balat is one of Istanbul’s best kept secrets. The streets of the Jewish Quarter may be old but they blend Jewish, Greek, Turkish and Latin influences, creating a city that’s as quirky as it is cultural. Rows of candy-coloured terraces line the roads that lead to synagogues, churches

and mosques. Corner cafes with colourful outdoor seating and bright awnings make Balat a welcoming mix of design, colour and personality. Even the central school is known as Red Castle and with its elaborate doors first opening more than 500 years ago, it’s a part of living history. The streets of Istanbul’s Old City burst with local flavours, music, wares and crafts that tell stories of the way life used to be. For travellers wandering these well-worn streets, it’s a tactile mix of cultures, religions and kingdoms. To really see Istanbul today, you need to see where it began.

For people visiting the Bangalore Palace, its Tudor architecture will remind them of Windsor Castle in the UK. Built in 1887, its elaborate wood carvings, vine-covered patterned walls and manicured gardens leave visitors in awe. The works of renowned painters, including Raja Ravi Verma further accentuate the beauty of the palace.

Traveller, communicator and indubitably, an actor, veteran thespian Ashish Vidyarthi encapsulates his soft spot for the city of joy.

ASHISH VIDYARTHI

The National Awardwinning artiste's debut in the performing arts began with the stage. He soon realised that he could foray into films too. "Quickly, I also realised that I could extend my acting prowess in other language films also, apart from Hindi. It subsequently dawned on me that I am capable of playing more than just the antagonist," the actor recalls his journey of self-discovery. A true-blue artist at heart, he resonates with everything culturally creative and artistic. A reason why he holds Kolkata close to his heart. It is no surprise, therefore, that along with several Bengali films in his kitty, Vidyarthi has also worked in several regional features, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. His multitudinous Bangla films strike a colourful chord with the City of Joy, which he frequently visits for work. The actor, who is also a motivational speaker, characterises Kolkata in his distinctive words, "From my very first visit for work, I have developed friendships in the city. People here take a part of Kolkata wherever they go. A place that has its own identity but is not caught up with it." His relationship with the city, however, is not new and dates back to his high school days. For him, Kolkata is not just a travel or bleisure destination, the city shares a more profound and emotional connection with him. "I was in eighth or ninth standard when I had visited this city. I was completely besotted by the dil se charm of the city and my heart throbs for Kolkata. I love the way Bengalis live, eat and everything they do. I enjoy addas and participate in all the cultural hues of the city," says the actor, with a smile.

briefing My Foodie Trails

Kolkata

I love visiting the Coffee House on College Street. What intrigues me is that the place has a history of around 100 years. People are still meeting, eating and chatting there. Generations have changed but the essence remains the same. If you want some more cultural vibe, head towards the Academy of Fine Arts and snack on rolls. The rolls at Flurys (a bakery) are just heavenly. You must also visit BarBQ (restaurant) for some Indian-style Chinese. Mocambo is one fine restaurant where one can enjoy the royal sitting and style of dining. Oh! and I cannot miss mentioning fish fries at Aponjon (a takeaway diner)."

Travel My Way In parallel to his persona, Vidyarthi loves places that have an authentic air to them which are free-spirited, uncaged and wild. A place of concrete is a big no for him. Being an avid traveller, he loves going to such places and not repeating his destinations.

Must-eat in Kolkata

Fav sites One place to which I still feel connected is the Academy of Fine Arts near Nandan. This is the place where I have performed several plays over the years. I still go there, watch plays and meet other theatre enthusiasts over a cup of chaa (tea).

The actor is fond of restaurant Maharaja's breakfast platter kochuri (deep-fried puffy bread with filling) and aloo-r shobji (potato curry), accompanied with sweet jilipi. Try Vidyarthi's favourite toast and "mamlet" (omlette) at Radhu Babu's Tea Shop near Lake Market.

TREKKING WITH A PURPOSE Waste management is mostly considered to be someone else’s job. However, there is a community that enjoys picking trash. Let's meet the ploggers!

The snow-capped Dhauladhar mountains paint a panoramic picture in the backdrop of Himachal Pradesh's popular hill-station Mcleodganj. Nestled amidst a lush green terrain and interspersed with flaming rhododendrons the Buddhist town is a little paradise. It is also a trekkers' hub with several routes crossing through it. The Triund trek, one of the most popular in the Dhauladhar mountains of the Mcleodganj-Dharamshala region, attracts a large number of tourists. This nine-km one-way hike passes through a steep and narrow but well-defined path.

However, one cannot ignore the eyesore as soon as the trek starts. The entire track is laden with trash - from plastic bottles and wafer packets to tin cans and glass pieces. While most trekkers and tourists turn a blind eye to the problem, a local NGO in Dharamshala – Waste Warriors - has come to the rescue of the mountains. Understanding the effects of plastic on the environment and how it defaces the area, members of the NGO conduct plastic clean-up drives every week and encourage trekkers to go plogging.

Be a mindful traveller in the hills •C arry a bag to store the wrappers and plastic packets, and dispose them in trash bins after reaching the city. •D o not throw leftover food in the waste bins as the putrefying odour attracts monkeys, which is not their natural diet. •T ake food only in the quantity that you will consume. •C arry refillable water bottles.

Waste Warriors has been a part of the plogging movement much before it became popular in India, when in 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi set an example by picking up trash during a walk. The NGO invites local residents and school students to participate in these drives to make Mcleodganj a cleaner place. Today, apart from treks and hikes, plogging in Dhauladhar has also become a popular activity, especially for the younger generation. VOLUNTEER FOR A CAUSE The plogging trail to Triund is short but steep. On an average, it takes around eight hours to trek one way while picking up trash from all nooks and crannies. However, the steep climb is well-compensated by the breathtaking views of the Kangra valley and the snowcovered Dhauladhar range. The trash bags are unloaded at a midpoint called the Magic View tea stall. With the trash bags getting heavier and the climb getting tougher, the journey is challenging but as participants say, "extremely satisfying". "A mere glimpse of the pristine Dhauladhar makes all the plogging worthy," most comment. The

next day is spent cleaning the summit and segregating the trash into recyclable and non-recyclable waste. POST-PLOGGING WASTE MANAGEMENT Although it is possible to carry the segregated waste on the return journey, one can hire mules. The recyclable waste goes to recycling plants in Punjab while non-recyclable waste goes to landfill sites.

How to join? Drop an email to know the plogging schedule and reach Waste Warrior’s office in Dharamkot, a small village near Mcleodganj. The staff will orient the visitors on the dos and don'ts and provide grab sticks, bags, gloves and t-shirts. The trek begins from Gallu Devi Temple in Mcleodganj.
