IN DUBLIN'S FAIR CITY

Ireland's iconic capital is a perfect blend of heritage and happiness, and Dubliners are the happiest when it's summer. So, let's toast with a Guinness and enjoy the Summer Solstice fest. Words Lee Grewal and Bhanu Uttam 26
June 2022
Along the paved streets of Dublin, the bustling crowd fills street-sides. Beneath a pink stretch of evening sky, live music floats from Grafton Street and travellers fill the market places, cafes and corner pubs. It’s summertime in Ireland’s capital and the city is alive with the celebration of summer solstice. The solstice, or the longest day of the year, falls on June 21 and the festival is the perfect way to experience Dublin and its surrounding regions. In a country where rainfall is a part of the backdrop, the onset of the warmer months brings humour and cheer. “Craic”, as they say in Ireland, when the locals brush off the bleak winter and welcome the fun of long days and chilled out evenings, which is why summer solstice is so revered. Through the skyline of terraces and steeples, stars pin in the fading light and this 7,000-year-old city seldom looks so beautiful. Top of the morning Dublin’s checklist of fame is long and its offering of things to do are plenty. Fortunately, it’s an easy city to get around on foot and two to three days will allow you to take in its richness. During the height of summer, with the temperature at a pleasant 20 degrees Centigrade, you can spend the day exploring the ancient and medieval monuments that have shaped Dublin. Owing to the literary genius of such noted authors as Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, Jonathan Swift and more, Dublin boasts a thriving creative arts scene and is listed by UNESCO as a City of Literature. Dublin’s heritage peeps from every corner with dramatic churches and cathedrals that are hallmarks of the cityscape. The Trinity College's Old Library is the University of Dublin’s most famous attraction and keeper of the 9th-century Book of Kells manuscript. Even more impressive are the tall oak shelves that line the walls, the pristine lawns and the grand 16th-century design of the college.

The Irish love for a sip is well known and Dublin is home to the world’s best distilleries. At the Irish Whiskey Museum, you’ll get to blend your own bottle and take home your own taste of Irish history. The Teeling Whiskey distillery is owned by the Teeling family that has been distilling whiskey since 1782. In 2012, the current generation of Teeling whiskey makers, opened the new Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Dublin, just down the road from where the original family distillery once stood! Also with a long-standing history that’s grown to be a part of Irish culture is the Guinness Storehouse, named after Guinness, Ireland's most iconic beer. You start at the base of the world's largest pint glass and journey up the building's seven floors to reach Gravity Bar that overlooks Dublin’s vibrant city centre. DIVING DEEPER INTO
Maldives Go beyond the famed beaches to explore a quaint world of offbeat experiences. Words Manjulika Pramod
A tropical paradise. A haven of beaches. A dreamy honeymoon destination and an adventure sports hub. Maldives is all this and a lot more. There is much more to this tourist paradise than its brilliant blue sea framed by pristine white sand. Step inside the islands to discover a quaint world of traditional villages and laid-back experiences. This tropical paradise lives up to all expectations of breathtaking Pinterest pictures and drop-dead gorgeous Instagrammable
videos and in retrospect, offers a culturally immersive experience. The 26 natural, ringlike atolls extending over 90,000 sqkm of the Indian Ocean are as precious as gems, each one unique in itself. Most of them are isolated from each other and it is practically impossible to visit all of them. While there are incredible activities to enjoy on the plush island resorts but for a wholesome experience, getting introduced to a Maldivian way of life is what one must look out for. But first, comes Male.
33
Experiences
To see the oldest dockyard (boatyard/port), visit Gulhi island. Another traditional fishing island, it is also one of the least populated in Maldives. Gulhi is a small and quiet island where you can soak in the laidback local life and traditions. Walk along its serene beaches and try its shallow water that can be ideal for snorkelling and swimming. Try a cooling mudbath at Fuvahmulah island. It exfoliates your skin, eases muscle tension and relieves body aches.

Located in Kaafu Atoll, Male is Maldives' vibrant capital, maybe one of the smallest capitals in the world – about six sq km across! As Maldives' economic hub, it is a blend of colourful buildings and tranquil turquoise sea. It's the perfect place to meet local residents and experience the rich Maldivian culture. Home to the erstwhile rulers of this island nation, this is where you will find architectural highlights and bustling markets. Male can be easily explored on foot. Plan a walking trip to visit the Grand Friday Mosque, Islamic Centre, Victory Monument, Rasfannu beach, Rasrani Bageecha,
National Museum, Tsunami Monument, Presidential Jetty and the Republic Square. On the way, look out for eclectic street art and don’t miss the shopping street Majeedhee Magu. When you tire, take a break at any local tea shop for some hedhikaa (short eats) and sai (tea). If soccer runs in your veins then try meeting young football fans at the Galolhu Football Stadium in Male. The stadium is not only home to the Maldives national football team but also to the teams of the Dhivehi Premier League. You might catch New Radiant S.C., one of the most successful teams in the league, in action.
Located in Kaafu atoll, Male is Maldives' vibrant capital, maybe one of the smallest capitals in the world – about six sq km!
Secrets of Maldives Maldives' best-kept secrets, however, are hidden in its islands. After you have had your fill of shopping and lounging by the sea in Male, explore the nearby fishing villages, local islands and the lesser-developed atolls. One of the closest is Maafushi Island (maa means big and fushi stands for island) with a stunning coastline. Close to the international airport, this island is best for an entire day of jet-skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, sailing, banana boat riding or canoeing. Maafushi was once home to a thriving community of fisherfolks. Today, it's mainly a tourist paradise with a vast
stretch of white sand, a breathtaking expanse of the Indian Ocean and a pristine blue sky. The local community still engages in fishing and you can experience what a fisherman's life must be like with a sunset fishing cruise. Venture out to sea during the golden dusk, soak in the idyllic views of the Maldives and use the handline fishing technique to make a catch. A barbeque dinner is served as a part of the experience! Around five km away from Maafushi stands Guraidhoo, another fishing island but quiet and more quaint with a soothing old-world charm. If exploring off-beat Maldives is what your heart desires, this is where you should stay! With lesser number of tourists, Guraidhoo offers a slice of

Maldives' village life, as authentic as possible. A 30-minute walk through palm-lined sandy paths will take you around the village. You can explore it at your own pace but it's always better to hire a local guide. You can rent a dhoni (local boat) and sail out to the sea to try snorkelling. The best way to enjoy this island is to travel without an itinerary. Walk, swim, laze on the beach and enjoy siestas! Must-eat in Maldives While Maldives offers all types of global cuisines, you must try the local delicacies. One of the most sumptuous is addu bendi, a dessert prepared with grated coconut, golden syrup and jasmine water, and wrapped in dry banana leaf. An authentic Maldivian dinner mostly includes seafood and tropical vegetables with such staples as roshi (roti), bai (rice), kattala curry (sweet potato), mas huni (salad) and ala (yam). The fish preparations can include garudiya (tuna soup), emperor fish and rihaakuru (tuna paste cooked in coconut milk)

Rima Das' legacy goes beyond the Oscars. The two-time National Award-winning filmmaker is on a journey of narrating poignant tales from her home state Assam. With two internationallyacclaimed films in her kitty, Rima Das is a name to reckon with. Her way of depicting chronicles is no less than visual poetry. Her stories talk about the rustic village life of Assam and the native characters. Her stories go back to her roots in Assam and set evocative chords. Das has several feathers in her cap - writer, director, producer, editor and cinematographer - all of which have helped her carve a niche in the arena of motion pictures. Das was born in a humble family in Kalardiya, around 50 km from Guwahati. The cultural fabric of Kalardiya also had its share in shaping her persona and films. The Chosen Path Das always wished to make realistic and experimental films. The works of Wong Kar Wai, Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkvosky, Satyajit Ray and Quentin Tarantino, among others, kept the fire of filmmaking burning inside her. Akin to her scripted characters, nothing could stop the acclaimed filmmaker from following her heart. This Cotton College (Guwahati) graduate's
aspirations led her to Mumbai in 2003. However, breaking into the business was no cakewalk. Her mother tongue became a barrier for her in the city of dreams but that did not deter the cinematic powerhouse from making it large. To make ends meet, she did a few advertising films, modelling assignments and even roles in daily soaps. It was only after her first short film Pratha (2009), that she found herself in a stable position and bought her first camera. But the flop of her second film Man with Binoculars (2016) devastated her to an extent where she could not help but cry her heart out in the middle of a road. “I have heard people say negative things about my film. But there will always be people who will say both positive and negative things. One has to be sensible enough to take something from both. When Man with Binoculars didn’t do well, ...I was devastated. One day, I even cried in the middle of the road. But I did not give up. I kept trying. Filmmaking is a journey. Some people are lucky, they get instant success but for others it’s a process,” Das had said in an interview. As per Das, although the film didn't do well, it was screened at some

strapped, the film was nowhere to be a commercial success. In fact, the film did not have any full-fledged production unit either. It was only a woman from Assam who was rigging into different production avatars! "Both Village Rockstars and Bulbul Can Sing portray strong women characters at their heart. It feels nice to see that critics and audience alike have welcomed such stories. It also shows us that it doesn't matter whether the film is directed by a male or female filmmaker. I would be happy to see more and more women in the industry shine and also open windows for fellow women."
of the most prestigious film festivals, including the Mumbai Film Festival and the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, Estonia. The film narrated the story of an old man from Assam who feels that his ageing is adversely affecting his kith and kin. And in this course, he starts discovering himself and sets himself free from others, metaphorically. The Success Story Her second feature film, Village Rockstar, depicts the poignant story of a teenage girl. The film hit the screens in 2017 and the rest is history. It was India’s official entry to the 91st Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The success train did not stop here. The film went on to bag the National Film awards for Best Director and Best Editing in 2018. Set in Majuli, Assam, the coming-of-age movie - with no big names, no stellar starcast, not even a professional actor - connected with the crowd instantly. This film had no promotions or any media interviews. Completely boot-

The very next year Das continued her journey with her third feature film, Bulbul Can Sing. This film also bagged a National Award. The film struck a chord with latent human emotions. The film depicts the storey of Bulbul, a teenage girl, from rural Assam and how as she is about to discover her teen life, a tragedy with her best friend leaves her in shock. Despite the hindering situations, Das' main characters are always buoyant and find simpler coherent ways to achieve their goals. The Movie Crusader The cinematic wizard believes that her lack of formal training has helped her give an edge to her way of storytelling, thus putting her home state’s aspirations on the global map. She is currently working on a script with actor Tillotama Shome. Be it Dhunu in Village Rockstars, who aspires to have her own music band breaking the shackles of puberty, or Bulbul in Bulbul Can Sing, who accepts her sexuality with pride – Das' films speak of poignant stories of childhood and their ‘nothing can hold back’ dreams like her own.

RICKY KEJ
For Bengaluru lad Ricky Kej, who won his second Grammy Award in 2022 for his new album Divine Tides, music is his soul's language! For this album, Kej collaborated with Stewart Copeland, founder and drummer of the UK-based rock band The Police. Born in North Carolina, the US, this musical genius has lived in Bengaluru since he was eight years old. He won his first Grammy in 2015 for his album Winds of Samsara. With his second Grammy, he joins the elite group that includes the who's who of the music industry - Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Zakir Hussain and AR Rahman to
name a few. Kej has always been interested in music, ever since his younger days. While most of his classmates would be glued to their favourite cartoons and video games, he used to be hooked to his music system. He would dissect songs that he heard to try and find out the musical instruments used, the musicians who played them etc. In the process, he learnt a lot about different instruments, styles of music and cultures. Talking about his hometown, which has shaped his music, he says, "Growing up in Bengaluru, I was exposed to classical Hindustani music, Carnatic music and global music. Recently, I composed a documentary called Wild Karnataka. It showcases the rich biodiversity of my home state Karnataka." He adds, "I was eight years old when my parents moved to Bengaluru. I instantly fell in love with this city due to the interesting mix of people who live here, the greenery, the weather, the food, the culture, the history and so much more." Talking fondly about his first musical performance in the tech hub, the virtuoso says, "One of the first major shows that I did in Bengaluru was at my alma mater, Bishop Cotton Boys' School in 2015 for the then President of India Pranab Mukherjee and for an audience of almost 13,000. It was an extremely special experience to perform in front of such a dignitary and my home crowd!"

From religious and cultural celebrations to performing arts and practical purposes, masks have been used around the world since antiquity.

Words Bindu Gopal Rao From invoking deities to warding off evil spirits and from hiding one's identity to storytelling performances, masks have been used across the world for centuries.
Masks
In India, masks play an integral part in rituals and performance arts representing characters from mythologies. “With early references from the Indus valley civilisation, around 2500 BC, the zoomorphic (terracotta) masks still find a place in several religious performances in India. In the folk theatre-based performances of such Hindu epics as Ramayana and Mahabharata, masks are worn to accentuate the fundamental nature of a character,” explains Kiran Mohan, art curator and author.

Northeast Nuances In Northeast India, masks are a popular part of traditions. In Assam, traditional maskmaking is still practiced in various parts, including Majuli, an island on Brahmaputra river. Traditionally three types of masks are made - mukha (face masks), lotokai mukha (to move lips, eyes, hands etc) and bor mukha (life-size or even larger). “Local craft is a major source of livelihood. Most masks are made from bamboo, fabric and clay, and dried in the sun. Once dry, they are painted in bright colours,” explains Smriti Sangal, visual artist and co-founder of Culture Chauraha, an organisation working towards preservation of arts. Some masks from the Northeast are inspired by Buddhism and used for the traditional dance or cham ceremony. In Arunachal Pradesh, communities have a distinct repertoire of masks. Some of these rare masks are made from wood.

Bengal Beauty In West Bengal’s Purulia district, the larger-thanlife chhau masks are used in the eponymous folk dance. The craft of making chhau masks dates back to the rule of king Madan Mohan Singh Deo of Baghmundi. Chhau masks are made from paper pulp, cloth and clay. Master artisan, Bhim Sutradhar says, “The masks used in chhau dance performances are used to depict popular mythological characters like Lord Rama and Ravana, Goddess Durga and asuras, along with Goddess Kali, Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kartikeya, Lord Krishna and many more. While the mask serves as the base, feathers, decorations and ornaments that surround the face can extend to almost two feet away from the mask. Making the mask has different stages and once it is completely sun-dried, the facial features, including the eyes, nose and ears are created. After this, natural colours are used to paint the mask and it is decorated with beads and sequins.”
Karnataka Kaleidoscope In Karnataka, masks are used as one of the main elements of traditional theatre, especially in Yakshagana, a folk dance form popular in coastal Karnataka, which combines dance, music, song, dialogues and colourful costumes. In this, artistes decorate their faces with big dramatic eyes, bright makeup and ornate headdresses. Another folk dance form that uses masks is Bhoota Kola or Bhootha Aradhane performed in parts of Karnataka. A form of spirit worship, in this, men wear ornate metal masks as they embody a bhoota (holy spirit) and dance around a plinth with a sword in hand. Traditionally, after the Bhoota Kola (ceremony), the masks are often kept in temples, where they are worshipped as representations of the spirits.

Japanese Joy In Japan, Tengu masks are used in Noh stage plays and some Shinto festivals. Characterised by a long, red nose, they are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. The Oni masks that are usually red in colour and angry-looking with long and sharp teeth are a part of the beanthrowing festival, Setsubun. The Kitsune masks or fox masks are worn in some Shinto festivals, while the Hyottoko mask, which has a childlike, comical expression with a round mouth skewed to one side, is used by dancers enacting the role of a clown. Okame or Otafuku is the female half of the Hyottoko. Kyogen is the comic relief in the intermission of the serious Noh theatre and both see the usage of masks. The Men-yoroi, or armoured masks traditionally worn by warriors, are now part of exhibitions in museums.
Vivacious Vietnam Masks are an intrinsic part of Vietnamese culture and tradition. In the north, the Kim Mun Lanten community use masks decorated with bright paper strips during ceremonies to impersonate and help one's own spirits. There are also masks carved from both soft and hard wood, and decorated with tufts of goat hair. Central Vietnam theatre hat boi or hat tuong sees the use of colourful masks too. Papier mache masks are used during the Mid-Autumn Festival while theatre masks are made from bamboo and coconut. A traditional folk mask does not use more than four colours and maintain the balance between the positive and negative elements.

The summer sun is hitting hard but some artists are busy in the hamlets of West Bengal and Odisha in eastern India weaving baskets with the local sabai grass! While the men are occupied in harvesting the sabai (a wild perennial grass), the women are tending towards the production of traditional merchandise made from the grass that is found in abundance in these areas and is now bringing about an economic revolution. A transformation is underway that is reforming the art of sabai grass basketry to suit the tastes of modern customers and making it easily available across the world. Traditionally, sabai grass items, mostly utilitarian ones like baskets, are sold by village retailers locally. Some of them have
showcased the products at exhibitions and fairs. However, over the last few years ,e-commerce ventures have been offering a much bigger platform to the rural artisans to sell their products. Apart from the beauty of the handmade products, what appeals to a global customer is that they are natural and ethically produced following methods that have been passed down through generations.
History While there is not much documented information about the origin of crafts made from sabai grass, lore says it has existed for hundreds of years. Locally known as babui, it is believed that the British army found the grass sturdy and used it to make ropes to pull heavy artillery.

The production process of sabai crafts is extremely ethical and the end products are ecologically sustainable
The craft of basket weaving has been popular in the Indian subcontinent as a form of livelihood for rural communities. However, with few takers over the years due to the inundation of plastic counterparts, the traditional use of grass products in the kitchen and as a decorative object has reduced. But today, with rising eco-consciousness and design innovations, the demand for these traditional craft products is on the rise.
Production Process
Sabai grass grows in the forest fringed districts of Mayurbhanj in Odisha, Bankura and Purulia in West Bengal. The grass is harvested in the months of May and June, and may get extended till September. Although sabai grows naturally, it is now also being cultivated for largescale commercial purposes. Once the grass is harvested, it is sun-dried and stored in bundles. These bundles are dyed by soaking them in boiling water mixed with natural vegetable dye. They are sun-dried once again and twisted into ropes. The grass is then hand-braided to make different patterns that lead to the production of merchandise.
66
June 2022
Green at heart
The production process of sabai crafts is extremely ethical, thus, making the end products ecologically sustainable. The craft is energy negative as it does not require any machinery for production or drying. The process does not create any wastage either. Small trimmings discarded during shaping of the ropes and braids to make final products can be composted. All in all, this is one of the most eco-friendly manufacturing processes with no carbon footprint.
Products and Utility
Sabai grass products are handy for day-today usage. They serve multiple purposes, including but not limited to storage in the kitchen, bathroom, or otherwise used for decoration, and textile fibre. Planters, mats, table runners, storage baskets, fruit baskets, coasters, handbags, wall decor, furniture and many other durable utility products are made. Artists are continuously brainstorming with designers to create innovative and unique products that have long-term utility and can fit the millennials' taste. They are trying to make this craft diverse by giving it an edge over the traditional designs while keeping it affordable.
