NURTURING TOMORROW: THE VITAL ROLE OF FAMILY SUPPORT FOR YOUNG MOTHERS
Being a first-time mother is an exciting and at the same time an anxious moment. It comes with overwhelming feelings but with a lot of joy. At this crucial moment of life, a mother-to-be requires absolute family support as it provides the necessary foundation for raising a child. A nurturing family environment offers emotional stability, practical assistance, and guidance, essential for a mother's well-being. When mothers receive support, they are happier and more confident, positively influencing their child's development.
This supportive network enhances the mother's ability to provide care and fosters a secure and loving environment for the child. Ultimately, family support contributes significantly towards nurturing responsible, well-adjusted individuals who contribute positively to society," says Dr. Manimekalai Mohan, an esteemed academician and founder of SSVM Group of Institutions, in this interview.
Can you please discuss the crucial role of family support, particularly for young mothers, in child development, and why family support is vital for young mothers?
Family support is fundamental for young mothers because raising a child is a demanding task that requires emotional, physical, and mental strength. When a family supports a young mother, it alleviates stress and allows her to focus on nurturing her child. This support network can provide the mother with the necessary resources, guidance, and encouragement, creating a positive and stable environment for the child.
Dr. Manimekalai Mohan Founder, SSVM Group of Institutions, Coimbatore, Tamil NaduHow does a supportive family environment impact the well-being of the child?
A supportive family environment profoundly impacts a child's well-being. When mothers receive emotional support and encouragement, they are generally happier and more confident. This positive state of mind is reflected in their parenting, leading to an encouraging and loving atmosphere for the child. Children who grow up feeling loved and secure are more likely to develop strong self-esteem, social skills and resilience. They are also more likely to perform well academically and exhibit responsible behaviour.
Could you elaborate on how a mother's happiness directly influences her child's happiness and development?
Absolutely. A mother's emotional state is closely linked to her child's emotional and psychological development. Happy mothers are more patient, attentive, and engaging, which ensures a secure attachment with their children. This secure attachment is critical for the child's emotional development, as it lays the foundation for healthy relationships in the future. Moreover, a positive home environment encourages children to explore, learn,
and grow, setting them up for long-term success and well-being.
What specific support can family members provide young mothers to help them and their children thrive?
Family members can offer various forms of support, including emotional, practical, and informational support. Emotional support involves listening, reassuring, and being there during difficult times. Practical support includes lending a helping hand in childcare, household chores, or financial assistance. Informational support offers advice on parenting, health care, and education. Open communication and a non-judgmental attitude are also crucial, as they create a trusting environment where the young mother feels valued and understood.
How does this supportive environment contribute to a healthier society and the community's overall progress?
Children who grow up in supportive and collaborative environments are more likely to become responsible and productive citizens. These individuals are more likely to contribute progressively to society. A supportive upbringing fosters better education outcomes, healthier lifestyles, and innovation. When children feel secure and valued, they are more likely to pursue their passions and contribute to societal progress. A thoughtful and compassionate family environment creates a ripple effect that benefits the entire community.
What advice would you give to families to better support young mothers and ensure a positive upbringing for children?
I advise families to prioritise open communication and empathy. Understand the challenges that young mothers face and offer help without judgment. Be proactive in assisting, whether through babysitting, financial support, or simply being there to listen. Encourage and praise the mother's efforts, and remind her of the importance of self-care. Remember, a happy mother leads to a happy and well-adjusted child. Families can create a nurturing environment that sets the stage for the child's future success and wellbeing by working together.

A
fter winning hearts in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi, Taha Shah Badussha opens up about
his
acting journey, highlighting his persistence and the power of second chances.
Words Sharmi Adhikary
Taha Shah Badussha
When Taha Shah Badussha signed up for a three-day role in renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, he had no idea the Netflix series would become his second chance to prove himself in the Hindi film industry. His acting prowess and charming looks convinced Bhansali to cast him as Nawab Tajdar Baloch, a significant character in the series. After the series aired, the admiration and love from the audience caused a tectonic shift in Badussha's life. In a world where going viral is a fame mantra, this Heeramandi star truly broke the Internet. Despite playing a secondary role in a show that focuses on strong women, he has now been christened the real diamond in the ensemble drama, leaving him ecstatic yet humbled.
However, a career in showbiz wasn’t planned for this Abu Dhabi-born actor, who debuted on the silver screen opposite actor Shraddha Kapoor in Yash Raj Film’s Luv Ka The End He was also seen in the film Gippi before appearing in Shadaab Mirza's Barkhaa and
Katrina-Sidharth starrer, Baar Baar Dekho
While he continued working in television series and debuted as a singer in 2022 with the single “Vande Mataram,” it was his collaboration with Bhansali's production house that made him the talk of the town. “I only recall acting for my friends in boarding school to cheer them up. Time away from parents can be difficult, so I’d enact parts from films to make them laugh. I didn’t know that the fun banter would eventually become a career,” says Badussha, who credits his mother for encouraging him to join the New York Film Academy. “I was noncommittal because I was an entrepreneur then. If she hadn’t pushed me, I wouldn’t even know I had the talent. But after joining the institute, I realised this was what I wanted to do,” he adds.
While the work of established actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Akshay Kumar piqued his interest, Badussha honed his acting skills by observing animation films and cartoons. “I noted the expressions of
characters when they were happy, sad, excited, and so on. The way their eyes communicate a mood is mind-blowing. These observations came in handy when performing in front of the camera,” says the actor, who recently made his debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
An adventure seeker with a passion for skydiving, Badussha enjoys visiting museums and theatres to catch up on the latest exhibits, shows, and productions. His last visit to the hills in Himachal was memorable as he experienced snow in its purity. “I don’t just relax during holidays. I love activities like hiking and skydiving, constantly doing something to stay active,” he states.
Discussing versatility in today’s context, he believes an actor’s job doesn’t stop at merely entertaining the audience. "With social media shaping public perception, an actor today cannot just focus on being a marvellous performer; he must also be an entrepreneur and a brand through astute marketing. Gone are the days when work ended with the curtain call and end credits. There’s a larger network to tap outside of the silver screen, and an actor’s responsibilities have increased manifold because he must also influence. After the film is over, how he handles his brand decides his relevance. The space is competitive, but the scope is challenging for someone who wants to be an allrounder,” explains the actor.
With aspirations to work alongside talents like Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon, Badussha holds high regard for contemporaries Ranbir Kapoor, Vikrant Massey, and Vicky Kaushal. He says: “I take each day as it comes. I won’t say I’ve struggled, as the highs and lows are part of an actor’s journey. But fate has given me a second chance, and working with a perfectionist like Sanjay Leela Bhansali has shown me that sky's the limit. Let me savour the joys and gear up for bigger glories now!”

Words Nivi Sri
A mysterious palace in the sky. An ancient architectural wonder, and the magical world of the wild. That's the allure of Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled deep inside the lush forests of Sri Lanka. Perched atop a soaring 370-m granite peak, the remnants of the once-majestic capital erected by King Kassapa (Kasyapa ) I (477–495 AD) command attention. Known as the Lion Rock, this formidable edifice reigns supreme over the surrounding jungle, which also hides mysteries of its own. Just as the Lion Rock stands as a testament to the resilience of nature, so do the forests that lie below, where the smallest of creatures like the Loris co-exist with the mightiest of them - the elephant!
O ne of Sri Lanka’s most acclaimed wildlife research and conservation programmes – the Loris Conservation Project at the Jetwing Vil Uyana – offers the nightly Loris Trail. This is an apt example of how tourism can have a positive impact on the biodiversity and environment of a region.

A different kind of adventure awaits those who dare to venture into the depths of the night, in search of the endangered and elusive Grey Slender Loris, one of the world's smallest primates. Lorises are animals that live in trees and come out at night. During the day, they curl up to sleep. They are known for their big eyes dominating their small heads! They move slowly in the trees and sometimes hang upside down, using their hands to grab food or branches.
While the actual jungle may be off limits after sundown, get a taste of the adventure at a manmade private sanctuary - the protected forest area nestled within the serene surroundings of the luxurious Jetwing Vil Uyana.
A natural paradise, this lush property, with a wetland system, is not only home to otters, fishing cats, crocodiles and birds, but is also among the few sites in Sri Lanka, where the Loris can be spotted. A special area here has been designated as a Loris Conservation Site! Led by a resident naturalist of this luxurious property, small
groups of guests embark on an exclusive night trail, with the hope of catching a glimpse of the elusive nocturnal primate in its natural habitat. As guests walk through the property, with tranquil lakes, verdant paddy fields, and rare, indigenous trees, they're treated to sightings of endemic and migratory birds, their melodious calls blending harmoniously with the rustling of leaves and the gentle lapping of water.
The naturalist advises caution, warning against touching branches and tree trunks, which may harbour poisonous insects or slumbering snakes. With only dim red headlamps illuminating the path ahead, the trail ventures deep into the dark. The forest's night life unfolds - owls hoot from treetops, bats flit through the air, and unseen creatures scurry in the underbrush.
Butterflies sleep peacefully, their delicate wings folded, while a snake coils lazily around a branch. And then, after several false alarms and fleeting glimpses of other creatures, the group finally spots it - a slight movement on a tree branch, followed by the curious face of the mysterious Loris, its large eyes gleaming in the dim light – Yoda from Star Wars comes alive!
For a fleeting moment, time stands still as the group gets to marvel at this miniature creature. But as quickly as it appears, the Loris disappears into the canopy, leaving behind only the echoes of its shrill call.
T HE GATHERING
E ach year, hundreds of wild elephants converge at Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks for “The Gathering”. This migration, spanning June to October, boasts the world's highest concentration of wild Asian elephants. They migrate to the open pastures around the ancient Minneriya reservoir. Here, amidst the lush greenery, watch the elephants as they engage in social activities and playful water antics, resembling a grand family reunion.
In the heart of Sigiriya, where legends intertwine with the whispers of ancient trees, lies a tapestry of wonders waiting to be discovered. Here, amidst the verdant embrace of nature, the night safari is but one thread woven into the rich fabric of adventure. Yet, towering above it all, like a sentinel of time, is the awe-inspiring rock fortress.
The Rock Fortress
An ancient citadel, perched precariously atop a towering monolith, the Lion Rock's weathered facade is a testament to the passage of centuries. From its lofty heights, it surveys the land below, a silent guardian watching over the dense green forests that stretch as far as the eye can see.
But Sigiriya is more than just a fortress; it is a marvel of engineering and ingenuity, its very existence defying logic and reason. As visitors trace the footsteps of kings and conquerors, they are greeted by the remnants of a bygone era - a complex network of water gardens, designed to sustain life in the most unlikely of places.
Legend has it that it was King Kasyapa who first conceived this grand vision, driven by a desire for power and protection. And so, with determination as unyielding as the rock itself, he set about building his legacy upon this lofty perch.
Elephant Kingdom
From the heights of the Lion Rock to the sprawling plains of Minneriya National Park, the journey continues. Here, amidst the dramatic landscape of rolling hills and lush vegetation, a safari to spot the famous elephant is a must. Tourists traverse the rugged terrain in open vehicles tracking the majestic animals; an average sighting of 15 to 20 of them is common. Tourists are often greeted by the sight of a family of elephants, leisurely enjoying their meal of branches and grass. Silently observe from a distance and the safety of the vehicle. Magnificent and serene, the gentle giants sway gracefully as they enjoy their meal. With each powerful sweep of their trunks, they pluck tender shoots from the lush vegetation. The matriarch stands tall and vigilant, her watchful gaze casting a protective aura over the group, while the younger members of the herd frolic playfully.

Hanle, a r emote village in Ladakh, offers one of India's most mesmerising night adventures. Let's take a trip.
Words Obuli ChandranObuli Chandran, Founder & CEO, Mango Education, is a science educator, communicator and an astrophotographer with a passion to nurture students to become researchers, and innovators, promote rational thinking and build scientific temper among the public.
Stardust on my sleeve...if there is any place on Earth where this dream can come true, it has to be Hanle in Ladakh. As the sun sets in this remote village perched high up in the Himalayas, Coldplay's song “A Sky Full of Stars” comes to life, with the blue dome being dotted with hundreds of twinkling specs – gold, silver, red or just a glint of light! As the night darkens, and the last
T he temperatures here are cold throughout the year, with summer being more pleasant. Usually, June to September is an apt time to visit, but even then, thermals and warm jackets are a must. However, the best time for stargazing and astrophotography is between September and March, when the skies are the clearest. But the temperatures are extreme.
T here are many homestays in and around Hanle, where you can enjoy local hospitality and food. Quite a few of them are equipped with telescopes given by the IIA and have trained manpower for night sky observations. These efforts by IIA encourage astro tourism and boost the local economy.
Hanle is also known for its spectacular landscape, with towering Himalayan peaks and a meandering river.
of the kitchen fires go out, the dark sky takes charge. The stars shimmer with a mesmerising brilliance, each one a tiny beacon of light against the infinite expanse. Constellations take shape and stories woven by ancient civilisations come alive, as you lose yourself in this cosmic journey.
Located around 250 km from Leh, Hanle boasts the stark beauty of a high altitude dry and cold desert, hidden in the rain shadow region of the mountains. It also has one of the darkest skies in India and has been attracting astronomy enthusiasts over the years. Now, with the village being declared a part of the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve, the first of its kind in India, its attraction has only increased! A dark sky reserve, like forest reserves demarcated to protect animals and wilderness, safeguards dark skies from the polluting effects of artificial lights. Even if there are habitations around the reserve, they are required to follow a set of rules to maintain minimal to zero light pollution. So, in Hanle, no artificial illumination of any kind, even vehicle lights, is allowed inside the reserve area. Hanle is also home to Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO), a high-altitude astronomy station, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA).
Hanle's sky seems magical, offering surreal experiences. Stars sparkle in every inch, and our home galaxy, the Milky Way, stretches across the dome like a celestial river.

T he three-hour-drive to Umling La pass (one of the world's highest motorable roads) is a must-do too. Make a day trip and return to Hanle by evening.
The density of stars over Hanle is overwhelming, some floating so low that you may be tempted to reach out and grab them!
During the day, explore the 17th-century Hanle monastery, a grand white structure dominating the landscape. Standing atop a mountain, the monastery is brilliantly silhouetted against the stark backdrop of gigantic mountains. With the Hanle River flowing by, the monastery has been an iconic landmark since ancient times.
Hanle is about six hours by road from Leh, a beautiful drive along the majestic Indus River. The usual lunch stop is at Chumathang, where there are eateries by the hot springs. For legendary Australian cricketer Brett Lee, Sydney is the perfect amalgamation of everything that his homeland has to offer.
Words Veenu SinghBRETT LEE
In the realm of cricket, few names resonate with the same electrifying energy and sheer pace as Brett Lee. The former Australian international cricketer is undoubtedly one of the most famous worldwide, having played the game in all three formats. With a career defined by blistering deliveries and remarkable athleticism, the legendary player's impact on the sport is undeniable. Besides being a passionate cricketer, the former fast bowler is equally passionate about travel, seafood and music, not to forget acting. A true globetrotter at heart, his passion for
travel is as dynamic as his bowling action, with journeys that span continents and cultures.
Though the cricketer has several countries and cities on his favourites list, he has a special corner for Australia and Sydney in particular. "I have explored Australia extensively, but Sydney remains my favourite city. It offers the best of everything - wonderful climate, great food, amazing music scene and lots of things to see. I also have a property in Southern Highlands, just a couple of hours from Sydney, which makes it very convenient to go there often."

briefing
Travel, as Lee admits, not only gives him the freedom to discover new destinations and experiences but also offers him a chance to learn about different cultures and get unique opportunities.
India Connect
Brett Lee has been particularly enjoying his visits to India for the last 30 years now, for various reasons. On his recent trip, he was excited in his new role as the Australian avocado ambassador. "We are blessed that Australia offers such a lovely produce of avocados that are not just tasty but very healthy too, and I'm looking forward to showcasing and educating the Indian audience about the same," says Lee, with a hint of pride.
The biggest reason that makes Sydney a top favourite for the cricketer is its harbour. Besides being one of the world’s most beautiful natural harbours, it also boasts unspoiled beaches and picturesque gardens. Some of Australia's biggest attractions, including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Taronga Zoo Sydney, are also a part of the Sydney Harbour.
Where to eat
Food plays an important role for the fast bowler who still looks fit as a fiddle. Among a variety of cuisines offered by Sydney restaurants, he is quite fond of Mr. Wong that serves a modern Cantonese menu - from dim sum to the classic mud crab, with dim lighting and moody jazz adding to the vibe. The restaurant is also known for its great cocktails and serves vegetarian dishes too.
Nightlife
Sydney is also known for its nightlife, so where does Brett Lee prefer to go and unwind? "Honestly, after all these hectic years, I would much rather go and chill in a quiet place, away from the hustle and bustle, but yes, there are times when you need to entertain others. For that, I usually prefer any of the Merivale venues. Merivale is an Australian company that focuses on entertainment and hospitality in Sydney and New South Wales," says Lee.
