6E Leader

Dear Valued Customers,

Hope this finds you in good health and high spirits. I joined IndiGo in December 2021 and later took on the role of Chief Financial Officer in March 2022. I am truly privileged to be a part of IndiGo and be able to play a pivotal role in guiding the financial trajectory of our organisation, which today is one of the top ten airlines in the world and the most preferred airline of India. IndiGo's 17-year-plus journey has been characterised by clear vision, customer-centric innovation, and relentless commitment to operational excellence.

and responsible business practices that are aligned to the long-term success of our organisation.

While Value protection is crucial, we remain equally committed to Value Creation. For this, continuous evaluation of new growth opportunities and investments in customer centric innovation is undertaken to create and enhance business value.

As organisational strategies have evolved over time so has the role of the CFO. Amongst many other responsibilities, my role is to ensure financial health and sustainability of the organisation and to act as a key strategic partner. The aviation industry in general is known for myriad external factors impacting its financials and we are tasked with navigating these intricacies, ensuring that our financial strategy remains robust and creates long term value for all our stakeholders.

Stepping into the role of the CFO, we were faced with a situation where we were financially depleted due to the impact of COVID-19. The immediate task at hand was to recover while also simultaneously planning and allocating capital and resources towards future growth post the pandemic.

Reflecting on the last two years, thanks to your continued support and trust, we have come a long way in rebuilding the strength of our balance sheet to become net worth positive again and have also re-couped part of the losses that we incurred during the COVID-19 period. Given the steadfast recovery, we are now aiming for a bigger aspirational goal, which is to double our footprint by the end of this decade.

Under the ambit of our new strategy i.e. Reassure, Develop and Create, the key focus area for the finance department is to protect and create business value along with ensuring that the function remains embedded throughout the organisation to provide key decision support. To Protect value for IndiGo, management of costs and driving operational synergies are the critical elements that enable us to maintain our cost leadership that helps to provide you all with affordable travel options across our unparalleled network of 118 destinations. There is a constant finance-business partnership to ensure that we are diligent in managing our capital and resources and make prudent financial decisions each day.

Additionally, thoughtful safeguards are created in the form of risk management frameworks. These frameworks enable us to identify, assess and proactively mitigate emerging risks. Furthermore, along with ensuring the highest standards of Corporate Governance, we also promote a culture of integrity

As we are looking to further enhance air connectivity in both domestic and international markets and to double our size by the end of this decade, extensive investments in assets, human capital and technology is crucial today. It is also imperative to manage capital allocations judiciously to bolster our positioning and ensure we are ready for our next phase of growth. In this context, we are investing heavily in numerous digital initiatives over the last two years to ensure seamless travel experiences for you. Some of the recent advancements that you might have already experienced is our upgraded website and our new in-house developed chatbot "6E-Skai" that is part of our digital transformation journey. Apart from this, we are also investing in people, processes and infrastructure to serve you in the most efficient manner possible.

The diligent execution of our strategy has yielded positive results for us as we have crossed many milestones in the last few quarters including serving 100 million passengers in 2023 through our nearly 2,000 plus daily flights.

As we further progress on our journey of giving wings to the nation, as a responsible Corporate with established governance and ethical practices, we have also established our long-term commitment to drive sustainable economic, social, and environmental gains for all our stakeholders. We are amongst the lowest CO2 emitting airlines in the world. Our early investments in new generation aircraft helped avoid 1 million+ tons of CO2 emissions in FY 2023. Even during the pandemic, we continued to allocate resources to this cause through our CSR arm — IndiGoReach, to make a positive impact on the environment, restoring heritage, and impacting the lives of underprivileged women and children. Further, as a responsible airline of our nation we executed multiple humanitarian efforts and repatriated thousands of Indians and citizens from our neighboring countries, during times of distress. Going forward, we will continue to prioritise capital and resources towards sustainability and CSR activities.

Blessed are those organisations which have the trust of their customers, passion and unrelenting commitments of their employees and confidence of their investors — IndiGo is fortunate in this regard. I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your continued trust and loyalty to IndiGo. I consider each one of you as the driving force behind our continued success and enabling us to soar towards new heights and across new frontiers. Thank you for choosing IndiGo as your preferred airline and we look forward to continuing to provide you with the best air travel experience.

I joined IndiGo 17 years ago and from the beginning I felt right at home. It has been an enriching journey of learning and self discovery as part of Operations Control Centre. From training recruits to Director of Crew Logistics today, I design efficient processes to deliver hassle-free experiences for the crew. I’m blessed to have been a part of IndiGo’s historic growth, with a strong sense of fulfilment that we have been able to touch lives in so many ways.

Little did I know about the immense opportunities that lay ahead when I joined IndiGo as an Executive-SEP Instructor in 2009. Today, I take pride in holding the position of Director, Regulations and Compliance. I am grateful to IndiGo for the invaluable chance to evolve, learn, and excel beyond my role. My journey stands as a testament to the fact that at IndiGo, the sky is not the limit but just the beginning.

Made in IndiGo

A viation wasn't merely a career choice-it embodied my dreams, independence, and love for travel. When I joined IndiGo in 2007 as a Cabin Crew, I sensed the boundless opportunities within its ambitious growth plans and vision. O ver the years, my role evolved, and today as an A ssociate Director overseeing safety and regulatory compliance, I've been privileged to partake in landmark events like the inaugural of the IOSA audit. Each milestone fills me with pride, igniting a fire to conquer new heights alongside IndiGo, where dreams soar as high as the sky itself.

Inspired by IndiGo’s monumental or der of 100 aircraft, I joined in 2007 as a Trainee Security. Now, as the Airport Manager and C hief Security Officer in Istanbul, I ensure the smooth operation of airport activities. My journey at IndiGo has been a whirlwind of growth and opportunity, all thanks to the unwavering suppor t and camaraderie of it s ever-expanding family. I take pride in being an early believer in IndiGo's potential, witnessing its rise to be one of the most preferred airline in the country.

SET BENCHMARKS TO MAP EXCELLENCE

Setting benchmarks is fundamental to nurturing student success and growth, ultimately shaping meaningful lives.

Dr Manimekalai Mohan, esteemed founder of the SSVM Group of institutions, underscores the importance of clear criteria in guiding students' educational journey. Join us as we explore how benchmarks pave the path to excellence in academics, personal development and societal evolution, leading to a life of purpose and significance.

How do benchmarks and standards serve as pillars for student success and continuous improvement in various aspects of their educational journey?

Benchmarks and setting standards provide students with clear guidelines and expectations, empowering them to set goals and strive for excellence in academics, extracurricular activities and personal development. By offering a roadmap for growth, students can track their progress, identify areas for improvement and continuously evolve to reach their full potential.

What strategies can educators employ to effectively communicate and integrate benchmarks and standards into the learning experience for students of diverse backgrounds and abilities?

Educators can promote inclusivity by tailoring benchmarks to accommodate the diverse needs and abilities of students. This can involve providing differentiated instruction, offering various assessment methods and fostering a supportive learning environment where students feel valued and empowered to succeed regardless of their background or skill level.

How can parents and caregivers reinforce the importance of setting standards and benchmarks in their children's lives beyond the classroom?

Parents play a crucial role in instilling a mindset of excellence and continuous improvement in their children. By setting realistic expectations, providing encouragement and support and modelling a commitment to personal growth, parents can help cultivate a strong work ethic and resilience in their children that will serve them well throughout their lives.

How can the cultivation of a mindset centred around setting standards and benchmarks from a young age benefit future generations and shape the fabric of society?

Instilling a mindset of setting standards and benchmarks from a young age equips future generations with the tools and motivation to excel in all aspects of their lives. As these individuals grow into leaders, innovators and contributors to society, their commitment to excellence will ripple outwards, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and driving positive change in various fields and sectors for generations to come.

In what ways does the establishment of benchmarks connect the journey of student success and the broader evolution of society?

I believe that setting realistic benchmarks and higher standards provide students with clear goals to strive for, paving the way for not only their personal growth but also for societal progress. For instance, Shri M S Swaminathan's leadership in the Green Revolution and Dr Verghese Kurien's innovations in the White Revolution set benchmarks for agricultural and dairy industries, driving transformative change and improving livelihoods. Similarly, when students are encouraged to set and surpass standards, they not only excel individually but also contribute to the collective advancement of society. This underscores the power of benchmarks in shaping both individual success and societal evolution.

GI- A TAG FOR INDIAN HERITAGE

This section is dedicated to relaying insights into how your trip to Darjeeling, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and other regions contribute to the idea of Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

Geographical Indication (GI) tags play a critical role in protecting India's unique heritage of products and promoting sustainable economic development. These tags empower producers, provide assurance to consumers, and instill pride in India's diverse craftsmanship by safeguarding the reputation of products. As India continues to expand its GI portfolio, these tags will contribute to the nation's global recognition.

India has abundant GI-tagged products, including natural, agricultural and handicraft goods. As stated on the Department for Promotion of Industry, and Internal Trade's website, India has 547 registered GI tags. Among the top-performing states are Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra.1 Channa Patna toys from Karnataka and Pashmina shawls from Jammu and Kashmir are examples of India's rich cultural heritage that have received GI tags.

The Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), a World Trade Organization agreement, established an international system for safeguarding GIs, recognizing their unique and protected nature. The TRIPS agreement sets minimum standards for the protection and preservation of GIs. In compliance with this agreement, the Government of India introduced the Geographical Indication (GI) tag system in 1999 to promote and protect traditional products. A GI tag is a special sign used on certain products to indicate that they originate from a specific geographical location and possess qualities exclusively attributable to that place of origin. These tags serve as a tool for protecting the distinctiveness of products. GI tags offer benefits to both producers and consumers. For producers, GI tags provide a unique selling proposition, enabling them to differentiate their products and command premium prices. Additionally,

GI tags foster a sense of community pride. For consumers, GI tags serve as a guarantee of authenticity and quality. They can be confident that products bearing GI tags possess the distinctive characteristics associated with their geographical origin, ensuring a superior consumer experience.

The Government of India has taken several initiatives to promote and protect these unique products. One significant step the government took was to amend the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act in 1999 in 2016. 2 The amendment aimed to strengthen the registration process and streamline the legal framework for GIs. It also introduced provisions for the protection of traditional knowledge associated with GIs. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has also been working to create awareness about GIs and their potential benefits to producers and consumers alike. The ministry has been organizing workshops, seminars and training programs to educate producers about the importance of GIs and the registration process.3

The following provides a glimpse into some of the diverse and distinctive GI products that highlight the incredible heritage of our local artisans. Each GI-tagged item conveys a remarkable legacy of skills, materials and techniques intrinsic to its place of origin:

Lucknow Chikan Craft is a type of handwork skill-based embroidery on white fabric using white thread. It is predominantly executed on fine cotton with untwisted threads of white cotton, rayon or silk and features floral designs. Chikankari is a beautiful art form that includes simple and complex stitches that give it a simple, gentle and delicate effect. The process of creating Chikankari involves five different stages, which are cutting, stitching, printing, embroidery, washing, and finishing. The most used motif is that of a creeper. Individual floral motifs may adorn the entire garment or just one corner.4 The different products manufactured by artisans include Caps, Chapkan, Angrakha, Kurta, KurtaKameez, Applique angrakha, Chikan T-shirt Kurta and Embroidery.

Despite being classified as a black tea, it is less oxidised than most black teas, resulting in a lighter and less astringent taste than Assam tea. When you sip a cup of Darjeeling tea, you'll notice a soft flowery scent and a delicate flavor of apricot and peach. It's a unique and exquisite tea, especially the first flush spring tea, which is considered one of the finest black teas in the world.5 If you're new to loose tea, give Darjeeling a try. The tea may seem a bit confusing initially, but once you understand its three cropping periods - First Flush, Second Flush and Autumnal Flushyou'll have a better appreciation of this beautiful tea.

Kathputli is an age-old craft and a nurtured performing art that is a cultural symbol of Rajasthan. The puppets are made of wood and are created by puppeteers, known as Nats or Bhats. The festival of colours has numerous variants in various parts of India. Here are some of the more unknown Holi celebrations.

BHAGORIA & GAIR, Madhya Pradesh

Another unique Rangpanchami tradition of Madhya Pradesh is Ger (Gair), held in Indore. In the backdrop of the majestic Rajwada palace, with tankers spraying coloured water and people dancing and singing, the festival is a vibrant celebration held five days after Dulendi (Holi).

A kaleidoscope of colours and traditions is how best we can describe Bhagoria, a haat (market) held in the tribal villages of Madhya Pradesh. Celebrated for seven days before Holi, the Bhagoria festival is a popular attraction in the tribal districts of Barwani, Dhar, Alirajpur, Khargone, and Jhabua. Bhagoria is believed to trace back to the era of Raja Bhoj. Two Bhil kings are said to have begun the tradition of organising the fair, which continues to date. Bhagoria has significance among farmers as it commences at the end of the harvesting season.

Women don vibrant ghagras, and some wear peacock feather caps. Men sport traditional attire, unique headgears and some wear ghungroos (bells) at their waist. Both sport silver jewellery. After praying to gods, the revellers dance to the music of drumbeats. Sounds of songs and flute fill the air. Among the many food items on offer is the delicious dal paniya, a lentil dish prepared on charcoal and covered with leaves.

RAHAD RANGPANCHAMI, Nashik

DOLA YATRA, Odisha

Celebrated in the month of Phalgun (mostly March), the multiple-day Dola Yatra festival is based on the tales of Lord Krishna. During this festival, beautifully decorated temple-like palanquins called vimanas, with deities inside, are taken around in processions, as devotees sing songs. The festival ends on the day of Dola Purnima, when people apply colours on one another. A highlight is the milana (get-together) of the palanquins. Fairs, jatra and pala (traditional theatres) are also held during the festival.

A variety of local delicacies are served during this festival, including savouries and sweets.

In Nashik, the celebration of Rangpanchami is marked by a unique centuries-old tradition. Small pit-like structures, called rahad, are cleaned and filled with coloured water. As the festival kicks off, the streets come alive and joyous revellers immerse themselves into the coloured water and drench each other. Coloured water sprinklers are set up along the streets as people can be seen dancing and making merry.

Amidst the festivities, a highlight is the abhushan (jewellery) or phool (flower) mithai (sweet). This delightful sweet resembles a garland of flowers and is made with crystallised syrup and food colours. They are especially popular during Holi.

In the verdant Himalayan landscape of Uttarakhand, Holi is a unique celebration, with music and songs. Clad in traditional attire, people gather together and sing songs. This vibrant festival unfolds in three distinctive forms — Baithaki Holi, Khadi Holi, and Mahila Holi. Baithaki Holi is celebrated mostly in and around Almora, and sees people singing traditional and devotional songs.

BAITHAKI & KHADI HOLI, Uttarakhand

Khadi Holi, which involves people walking through villages singing songs, starts with a unique ritual called cheer bandhan, in which strips of fabric are tied to a pole. Devotional songs are sung during this ritual, and people also apply colours on each other. Mahila Holi primarily involves women in its jubilant festivities. In Rishikesh, Holi celebrations have become popular among tourists.

HOLI HABBA,Karnataka

FUL DOL UTSAV, Gujarat MASAAN HOLI, Uttar Pradesh

Holi Habba, Karnataka

Celebrated over four days, Holi Habba is a vibrant festival in Karnataka's Bagalkot (Bagalkote). The festival kicks off with Kama Dahanam – a bonfire ceremony and is followed by three days of playing with colours.

The spring festival is intrinsically linked to Lord Krishna, a reason why it's celebrated with much pomp and gaiety in Dwarka, Gujarat, which, it is said, was established by the Lord Himself. In the majestic Dwarkadhish Temple, Lord Krishna is offered gulal (natural colour powders) and scented water. Devotees dance, sing and smear colour on each other.

Masaan Holi, Uttar Pradesh

While in Uttar Pradesh, Holi is an extremely popular festival celebrated across the state, especially in Mathura and Vrindavan, Masaan Holi is another unique but not-so-known celebration held in Varanasi. During this, devotees chant Lord Shiva's name and smear each other with bhasma or ash.

Amidst the weathered facades and scattered remnants, glimpses of history emerge. Wandering through these neighbourhoods, you'll stumble upon the breathtakingly ornate Shah-e-Hamdan Mosque, also known as Khanqah-e-Moula. Standing by River Jhelum, this marvel of wooden architecture has endured multiple fires over centuries. Even a glimpse inside will leave you in awe of its exquisite chandeliers, intricately carved hanging bells, and captivating craftsmanship.

While Khanqah-e-Moula captivates with details, the Pathar Mosque and Jamia Masjid mesmerise with their grand scale and geometric precision.

Secrets of a lost civilisation

A lUla in Saudi Arabia is an ancient city with spectacular man-made and natural monuments, which stand as a testimony to 200,000 years of human history.

A timeless mystery unfolds in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, where chiselled by the wind over millions of years, stand massive sandstone cliffs as dramatic figures silhouetted against an azure blue sky. Silent and surreal, the otherworldly setting is almost Martian. This is AlUla, an ancient city that was once a royal capital! A meeting point for civilisations of the Arabian Peninsula, the Mediterranean world, and Asia, AlUla has borne witness to 200,000 years of human memory and was home to the Nabataeans, who wielded much power over the incense and spice trade routes.

Today, this vast and spectacular valley of forbidding red-sandstone cliffs, tombs and ruins, offers a peep into the history of humanity. Often touted as “Mars on Earth”, this upcoming tourism hub is also considered to be the gateway to Saudi Arabia's very own Petra, Mada'in Saleh (Hegra).

The AlUla Old Town was once a key settlement. Tightly packed with streets

forming a defensive wall, it was inhabited until the recent past. Today, it stands as a deserted labyrinth of mud and palm structures with houses, shops and squares. The restored parts are home to cafes, boutiques and alfresco restaurants offering a quaint experience and a peep into the region's history. The place comes alive at night through expert-guided tours. Climb to the top of the 10th-century AlUla Fort to get a fabulous view of the surroundings.

Dadan Tombs

A popular stop is the ancient city of Dadan, which finds a mention in the Hebrew Bible. The flourishing capital of the once powerful Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms, Dadan was strategically positioned on the incense-trading route and was dotted with monuments. Today, out of the many ruins here, the “Lion Tombs” are prominent with spectacular lions carved into rock faces! Experts say the symbolic association of lions with strength and power indicates that the people buried here must have been rich and powerful.

It has the largest concentration of well-preserved Dadanitic and Lihyanite inscriptions anywhere in the world. Local guides say the travellers who passed through Jabal Ikmah carved a record of their journeys on stone, a ritual considered auspicious. The economic, political, and religious lives of these people are revealed in these ancient messages, written in the pre-Nabataean Arabic languages.

Jabal Al-Banat

A little away stands Jabal Al-Banat, a cluster of 29 tombs that, according to the inscriptions, were mostly owned or commissioned by women. It has one of the largest clusters of tombs in the area, with over 100 carved into the rocky outcrops surrounding the ancient city of Hegra.

The astonishing, ancient city of Hegra, is known for more than 100 wellpreserved burial tombs carved from desert rock in which the Nabataean elite were laid to rest. Some chambers carry inscriptions describing the person laid within – perhaps a healer, a military figure, or a leader. It is said to be the largest conserved site of the civilisation of the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan. Hegra’s most iconic structure is

the Tomb of Lihyan, son of Kuza. One of the largest of its kind in Hegra, it is located at some distance from the other tombs in the region, earning it the moniker of "The Lonely Castle". The 22-m tall tomb is sometimes referred to as Qasr Al Farid.

To the east of Hegra is a natural fault in the rocks, which forms a narrow passage filled with stone carvings. Historically, this was a place of worship for Nabataeans. One of the most popular attractions here is a huge rock-cut hall known as the ‘Diwan’, where Nabataeans gathered for rituals, feasting or political discussions. The mountain can be accessed from a passage through the Siq canal, near the Diwan.

After an entire day of treading into the past of humanity, be mesmerised by one of the world's most dramatic sunsets. The desert sand takes on a red hue as the dramatic natural outcrops and monuments stand silhouetted against the sky. Do pause at the outline of a human head, sculpted by wind into a rock. Locally known as the “Face Rock”, it seems as if it is guarding the secrets of the ancient lost land.

Within IndiGo alone, these numbers have always steadily grown, year-on-year to ensure that the women at work are at par with men in every field. The company’s back-to-work model for women, Take off 2.0, which launched in March 2023, is yet another step in the direction to champion 360° empowerment. “Women have always been at the heart of all social change and innovation, through centuries of invention and development, and this continues to be true even within IndiGo. Namma Bengaluru

For actor Deepika Padukone, Bengaluru is a favourite “comfort zone”. The superstar recommends her favourites from the city she calls “mayka”.

DEEPIKA PADUKONE

Whether it's a film dance sequence she is dazzling in or collecting kudos for her acting prowess or promoting her entrepreneurial portfolio, Deepika Padukone does it all with panache and calm. Still rooted to her beliefs and beginnings, the actor considers her superstar status to be more of a responsibility than reward. "It does feel good. But it also means I must focus more on my work as expectations are higher," says Padukone, adding, "success in the film industry, and actually everywhere, is temporary. The spotlight is on me today, but it can be on another actor tomorrow. My mantra is to enjoy the sunshine till it lasts but in a balanced manner. So, I just concentrate on enjoying my work."

This relaxed approach means Padukone follows her instincts in choosing the kind of work she does. "I have been asked if I am under pressure to choose the kind of films I do. But for me, the decision is more to do with the story of the project. I just have to connect with the story," she explains.

By her own admission, enjoying her work has made her a better performer. With characteristic modesty, Padukone says, "I'd like to believe I have become better at what I do. I am comfortable in front of the camera and have made friends with it. I am less nervous about making mistakes. These have contributed immensely to my growth as an actor, and also as a person. I have been blessed

with the opportunity to work with stalwarts and newcomers alike and everyone has enriched me in so many ways. I am enjoying my work more and more with each passing day. Work doesn't feel like 'work' anymore."

Another thing that she enjoys equally is travel. Whether it is holidays with husband Ranveer (actor Ranveer Singh), or her periodic jet-setting trips to her "mayka", Bengaluru, getting out of the “city” (Mumbai) keeps her refreshed. "Bengaluru is and will always be home. It is where my roots are, and where comfort is. The city has become more busy and buzzing, but I still love everything about it," she says with a smile.

As a child, I used to love going for walks at Lalbagh (Lalbagh Botanical Garden) and enjoy the green vistas around Vidhana Soudha (Legislative House). I used to love the flowers. Urbanisation may have reduced the city's green cover, but the gardens are just as beautiful," she insists. Her recommendations are: "Wake up before sunrise, reach Cubbon Park and watch the sunrise from there. It is such a peaceful experience!"

A Foodie's Paradise

Hub Of Culture

"When I was living in Bengaluru, my friends and I used to attend a dance performance or a musical show every week. It is amazing that the city has retained its love for traditional performances," she says, adding, "residents also appreciate live jazz performances by Indian and international artistes. The city's speakeasy bars and social scene is so enriched by these events."

"A lot may have been said about my unusual food choices, but my soul is satiated with the food I have grown up on in Bengaluru. Aside from my mom's kitchen, I feel the best South Indian food ought to be sampled in a few of my favourite places," asserts Padukone, who is a regular at Veena Stores, “a quaint eatery in the Malleshwaram neighbourhood of the city”. “The best time to visit is in the morning for a breakfast of steaming hot, fluffy idlis. I get ravenously hungry by the aroma itself. Do try the sweet pongal and other dishes like bisi bele bath, puliyogare and upma. Wash it all down with their special filter kapi (coffee)," she recommends.

"Whenever I return from Bengaluru, I always pack different types of podi (condiment made of lentils and spices) for my kitchen in Mumbai and also make it a point to bring back Mysore Pak (sweet) for everyone in Mumbai!"

C o-CEO of Archie Comics, Nancy Silberkleit was in Jaipur recently. In a chat, she talks about being overwhelmed with India's love for Archie and his friends.

'India is part of the Archie family'
64 March 2024
AceCorner
Silberkleit was attending the 17th edition of Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Series Jaipur Literature Festival 2024 as a speaker for a session on “Education: Transforming the World”.

It's no surprise that Nancy Silberkleit is a powerful and animated conversationalist! Her eyes light up as she speaks and you can almost see speech bubbles forming above her head! After all, she is the Co-CEO of Archie Comics! But even before she entered the boardroom of the celebrated comic book series, she taught art to children for over 20 years. In the process, she realised the intrinsic potential of visual art to educate young minds. She spoke to us on the sidelines of the Jaipur Literature Festival, 2024.

Archie Comics has been remade on various platforms, including a recently released musical in India, The Archies (by director Zoya Akhtar). Did you get a chance to watch it?

I’ve seen the film six times and keep going back to it! It pops with upbeat choreography and vibrant colours, injecting that 'Zam, Wham, Wow' spark one experiences in the world of Archie Comics! Setting the entire production on India's turf is key and builds a desire to explore the country's beauty. The unspoken reality around gender relationships is beautifully expressed through the main characters, which was deeply touching and moved me to tears! The film is a treasure for Archie Comics and its fans. The viewers walk away with hope, just the way Archie says in the movie: "The grass isn't greener on the other side. The grass is green where you water it!"

The world of Archie Comics continues to fascinate children and millennials alike! What makes it so relevant?

The major appeal of the series among both children and young adults across the globe is that the issues highlighted are extremely relevant. These fictional characters are like ageless and timeless friends to everyone. The characters are drawn to true proportions of the human anatomy, and the fashion and settings are truly relatable!

How have teenage icons like Archie, Betty or Veronica evolved today to become more contemporary?

There is a formula to the Archie Comics storyline that has been followed by our creative team over the past 80 years. You place a group of children in a school setting, throw in a bit of chaos then allow them to figure it out without any adult intervention! Our team of writers and artists also research about what's going on among teenagers. They always keep track of the latest fashion and ongoing global and social issues. I like to think we are as current as The Wall Street Journal!

Which character do you relate to the most?

I love to work, so I always reference Mr. Lodge as my favourite. I guess there is a true correlation there!

Tell us a little about your India experience. I have been coming to India for the past 15 years and this will be my second time in Jaipur! It was here that I got to experience Holi! The colourful festival was so special for me, especially with my background as an art teacher! Holi inspired me to have my talented team write and pencil the story around the holiday, titled 'Celebration Surprise' Some of the pencils were even influenced by my visit to Jaipur! I am thrilled to have been invited to the Jaipur Literature Festival.

"Zoya Akhtar's movie, The Archies has inspired me to explore Ooty! The film is a treasure for Archie Comics and its fans."

What about the audience here?

The audience in India has been so welcoming and I believe they are part of the Archie family! In India, I've seen the audience's facial and body expressions burst with love for Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and their friends! The amazing production by Zoya Akhtar and the cast, The Archies, has pushed me to explore more of India, not just the big cities where I arrive. I want to experience the soul of the country and its natural richness.

What's the next Indian destination on your bucket-list?

y travels to India have been for business. But I have changed my mind now. The Archies has inspired me to explore Ooty!

Within Her is the Power

At IndiGoReach, we firmly believe in the ability of our women in the villages of our country to bring about changes in their own and their families' lives through innovative income enhancement projects

Globally, International Women's Day is marked on March 8th every year. This month we bring to you the story of our didis from Jharkhand who have proved to be ambassadors of "Inspiring Inclusion".

Our CSR intervention “Women-led Actions Towards Environment Rejuvenation," was launched in 2017 to support 37,500 women across Godda, Hazaribagh, and Bokaro districts in Jharkhand.

The program is a result of our partnership with the esteemed organisation, Pradan (Professional Assistance for Development Action).

Through this project, the participants were equipped with

enhanced agricultural techniques, access to financial inclusion programs, and knowledge of government schemes.

These women have emerged as the catalysts for change within their communities thus fostering change at the grass root level.

We are happy to report that more than 60% of the households have an annual income of more than one lakh.

More importantly our lakhpati didis are standing up against issues such as domestic violence, child marriage, gender discrimination etc with courage and resilience. Their unwavering determination has earned them not only respect within their families but also admiration as role models for young women in their communities.

We salute the resilience of women across all walks of life and continue to reach out not just with our planes, but also with our hearts !

Shades on or off?

Believe it or not, your window shades play an important role in ensuring your safety. Here's how:

1. Keeping your window shades up during takeoff/ landing helps the cabin crew quickly assess the situation outside and form an exit plan in case of an unforeseen circumstance.

2. Once the doors are opened upon arrival, the cabin crew may ask you to close the window shades to maintain the cabin temperature and ensure your comfort and safety.

Please follow your cabin crew’s instructions for a safe flight.
