'EDUCATING THE FUTURE GENERATION IS BEHIND EVERY EFFORT WE MAKE' An interview with Dr. Devanshu Patel, President, Parul University Being an MD, what inspired you to become an education evangelist? Every individual has the ability to give back to society in one way or another, but what differs is how we choose to give back. The lake land of KUMAON Some extremely popular, while others hidden from the tourist eye, the Kumaon Valley of Uttarakhand is home to mystical lakes. Here are some of their stories. Words Shahla Siddiqui

28

May 2022

Snuggled in the lap of the world’s loftiest mountain range, the mighty Himalayas, the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand is a tourist hotspot of unparalleled beauty. It is home to some of the most popular hill-stations in India and quite a few secret hideaways. While the Kumaon valley is home to Nainital, which is popularly known as the 'lake district of India' and attracts tourists, thinkers and artists throughout the year, it also has several not-so-known lake destinations that are equally beautiful and captivating. The Immortal Naini Lake The queen of Kumaon, the crescent-shaped Nainital Lake or Naini Lake is a refreshing sight. Perched on the side of a steep mountain and surrounded by a lush valley, this lake has been immortalised by poets and painters! In summer, its green water is dotted by vibrant gondolashaped boats and speeding yachts. In winter, it takes on a mysterious hue as fog descends on its ripple-less surface. It is said that the lake attracted homesick Britishers, who build a colony in Nainital to feel at home. Today, as you walk across this lake town, grand Raj-era bungalows and churches remind you of the imperial times. Nainital also has a legend attached to its name. It is said that Goddess Sati’s eye marks the site of the emerald green lake, making it one of the 64 holy Shaktipeeths in India. The Naina Devi Temple is said to be located on the exact spot where the eye fell. Surrounded by three mountain peaks, this lake is well-known for boating, yachting and other water sports.

Hop on a colourful boat in any of the lake and contribute to the local economy while enjoying a breezy ride. 29

Bet You Knew: The lake district of Nainital has its 'personal rain'. Owing to its location, it receives a quick shower almost every noon. Other than Naini Lake and the surrounding lakes, the district has several other tourist attractions like the tea estates and a tea factory in Ghorakhal; the pilgrim centre Kainchi Dham; pristine Mukteshwar surrounded by fruit orchards, and quaint Kilbury that offers the most dramatic views of the surrounding mountains.

The Expanse of Bhimtal With its exquisite panorama set against green hills, Bhimtal is one of the largest lakes in the Kumaon region. Located in the Nainital district, the astonishingly placid emerald blue water of Bhimtal mirrors the mesmerising greenery of the surrounding hills. Experience an indescribable feeling of calm and tranquillity. About an hour's drive from Pantnagar airport, Bhimtal Lake is larger than the more famous Naini Lake. The lake is home to a rich diversity of aquatic life and migratory birds, the latter visiting it during winter. It is believed that Bhimtal Lake was originally known as Bhimsarovar. During their 12-yearexile, the Pandavas (from the Hindu epic Mahabharata) quenched their thirst with the waters of this lake. The legend goes that Lord

Lake takes Khurpa Taal Situated around 12 km from Nainital, this crystal clear lake is considered ideal for fishing. Sariyataal - Around two km from Khurpa Taal lies Sariyataal. This jade green lake has garnered a lot of attention due to its beauty and serenity. Kamal Taal - One of the most prettiest lakes in Nainital, this lake is situated right next to Naukuchiatal and is carpeted by lotuses.

It is believed that if one can see all the nine corners of Naukuchiatal from one point then one will attain salvation. Bhima (one of the Pandava brothers) had hit the ground with his mace resulting in a spring of underground water that formed this lake. Thus, the name Bhimtal (tal means lake).

The Mystical Sat Tal Sattal or Sat Tal (sat means seven in Hindi), located about 12 km from Bhimtal, is a group of seven interconnected lakes. These are Hanuman Lake, Ram Lake, Sita Lake, Lakshman Lake, Bharat Lake, Garuda Lake and Nal Damyanti Lake. These high-mountain lakes are freshwater-fed and make for dramatic backdrops. Colourful boats plying across the lakes add to the beauty of Sattal. Experience a boat ride through the waterways lined by tall pine trees!

Garud Taal Connected with Sattal, this lake is a paradise for migratory birds.

Legends of Naukuchiatal Naukuchiatal, also known as the ‘lake of nine corners’, is a small lake around four km from Bhimtal. Though this lake is close to Bhimtal, not too many are aware of its existence, thus, it is cocooned in peace. Some of the nine corners of Naukuchiatal are inaccessible or closed to tourists, but the accessible ones offer kaleidoscopic views of the water. Tall trees garland the lake forming a veil. Even if you are standing a few metres away, it will take a pair of trained eyes to spot its sparkling waters! According to local lore, it is believed that if one is able to view all the nine corners of the lake from one point then the person will attain salvation. Boating and birdwatching are quite popular here along with angling, rowing, paddling and yachting.

Pantnagar airport connects the rest of the country to the angelic valley of Kumaon.

In passing In the 1960s, India's first agriculture university, the GB Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, was established in Pantnagar on the pattern of Land Grant Agriculture Universities of the United States. Set in a green expanse, it is one of the largest university campuses in the world and houses Asia's biggest library with over 3,50,000 books and a seating capacity of 1,000 readers! This university town is the gateway to some of the most popular tourist destinations in Uttarakhand. From here, you can explore Nainital, Jim Corbett National Park, Mukteshwar and Ramgarh. The holy town of Purnagiri, built around the popular Purnagiri temple (a Siddha Peeth), is about 96 km away. Pantnagar also hosts the annual All India Kisan Fair and Agro-Industrial Exhibition. The region is also home to fruit orchards, so taste juicy plums and succulent peaches. If you crave something sweet, treat yourself to the delectable gulgule (a deep-fried sweet prepared with whole wheat flour, sugar or jaggery and fennel seeds). And don’t forget to pack some quintessential bal mithai (brown-coloured sweet made with khoya and coated with white sugar balls) on your way back home.

Hyderabad, a melting pot of several cuisines, is where the kulcha was once the official emblem of a dynasty. Words Bindu Gopal Rao

In his book 'Indian Food: A Historical Companion', food scientist, nutritionist and food historian KT Acharya succinctly explains the food of Hyderabad. "The cuisine of Hyderabad represents a superb example of the imaginative use of local ingredients to create a totally new consciousness." Whether it is the ubiquitous kulchas and naans, Hyderabadi kacchi biryani or the haleem – the cuisine and royal heritage of Hyderabad is deeply rooted in history and culture.

Must-try When in Hyderabad, savour some Osmania biscuits with a cup of saffron tea.

Historical Hues As a city that is known to love its food, Hyderabad comes close to no other. In fact, food is rooted in the city’s ethos. So much so that the humble Indian leavened flatbread, kulcha, which is believed to have been invented by the Nizam rulers, was the official symbol of the erstwhile Asaf Jahi dynasty and even appeared on the Hyderabad state flag till it became a part of the Indian subcontinent postIndependence. While the kulcha on the flag theory has been debated, it is said to have originated from when Nizāmu'l-Mulk Āsaf Jāh I, the first Nizam of Hyderabad, went to meet his spiritual guide – the Sufi mystic Hazrat Nizamuddin Aurangabadi – when he was still a courtier. The Nizam was invited by the saint and given kulchas in a yellow cloth and asked to eat as many as he could. The Nizam ate seven kulchas and Hazrat Nizamuddin blessed him saying he would

be the king and that his descendants would rule for seven generations – a prediction that incidentally became true. Food Files The diverse cuisine of Hyderabad boasts a mélange of flavours that have been influenced by its 400-year-old history. Pushpesh Pant, noted food critic and historian, explains, "The city was founded by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 and was a trading centre for diamonds and pearls. Golconda was the predecessor to the city of Hyderabad and many influences have shaped its cuisine. This includes the Vijayanagar empire as well as an IndoIslamic influence that has merged in the city, shaping its extensive and distinctive cuisine." Words Udit Sharma Today, Harmanpreet Kaur is hailed as one of the best batters in world cricket. But when she had started her journey from a small village in Punjab, she wasn't even sure if women could play cricket professionally! Supported by her family, especially her father, Kaur, the eldest of two siblings, chose the cricket bat to forge her own path. As a teenager, the allure of sports charmed her. From spending time in the field playing volleyball, football or cricket, it was only time till the sound of the ball hitting the willow caught her attention. With the continued support of her family, Kaur spent much of her time on the ground learning the art of batting. Her striking skills often reminded people of the young days of her idol, Indian batting legend Virender Sehwag. The Road to the Blue Jersey Kaur slowly paved her way into the domestic circuit during a time when women's cricket in India was going through a major transition. Driven by a lifelong dream of donning the fabled blue jersey and representing India at the world stage, the young Kaur continued to make waves in the domestic circuit. Her performances during the 2008 Challenger Trophy caught the eye of national selectors. It wasn't until 2009 when the then 20-yearold Kaur was roped into the national team to debut against India's traditional archrivals Pakistan. Soon, her performances made her a regular name in the team sheet. Surrounded by big names like Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and Anjum Chopra, and learning from their experiences, she became the youngest woman T20I captain in 2012 at the age of 23, a record till it was broken in 2019 by a then 22-year-old Smriti Mandhana.

AMRITSAR

ISTANBUL

History lesson The Partition Museum in Amritsar, located five minutes away from the Golden Temple, the iconic gurdwara, narrates the story of human turmoil during India's Partition through the voices of its survivors.

The Topkapi Palace Musuem was once an imperial palace and served as the main residence and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman kings. Spread over four courtyards, the palace is dotted with fountains, opulent pavilions and a sprawling harem along with several exhibition halls and a Treasury.

The foodie tales Amritsar is a culinary paradise. The must-tries are kulchas (flatbreads) with fillings of potato or paneer (cottage cheese) that is served with chole (chickpea). Also try fish tikka and the winter special - makki di roti (maize flour flatbreads) and sarson da saag (mustard greens).

Heritage walks

Connect with the history of Amritsar by revisiting the sites of historic importance. A leisurely stroll along the Heritage Street, from the historic Town Hall to the Golden Temple, gives you a sneak-peek into the city's past. This one-kilometre stretch feels like a walk through an open museum.

Sitting across from each other at the Sultanahmet Park, the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are at the core of the city’s heritage. While most visit them during the day, it is best to take a stroll at night. The streets dazzle with lights and you can enjoy the festive atmosphere and the musical fountain.

Shopping galore Phulkari embroidered suits and dupatta, Patiala salwarsuits, juttis, papads (poppadom) and vadi (sun-dried lentil paste savouries), and much more are found in markets across the city. You can also purchase traditional handicrafts.

Though Istanbul is known for its Grand Bazaar, a cobble-stoned street near the historic Galata Tower, Serdar-i Ekrem is probably one of Istanbul’s hippest shopping streets. It is filled with quirky shops, designer boutiques, several hotels and excellent restaurants – a perfect retail stop.

For nature lovers Harike Wetland and Bird Sanctuary is the largest wetland in north India. This man-made wetland spreads into Tarn Taran Sahib, Ferozepur and Kapurthala in Punjab, making it a hotspot for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Winter is the best time to visit.

Once an imperial garden, the Gulhane Park's beauty continues to attract tourists from across the world. Opened to the public in 1912, the park is home to centuries-old walnut and oak trees and the famed colourful flower beds.

Recommendation: Explore the bustling bylanes of old Amritsar on foot or on a bicycle. The 1.4-km-long Istiklal Avenue is the beating heart of Istanbul and is visited by nearly three million people daily.

‘Believe’ is the word that comes to mind when one speaks with one of the finest batsmen in Indian cricket, Suresh Raina. With the word "believe" tattooed on his right bicep, the cricketer believes in his capabilities, his love for family and in the Almighty! Counted among India's finest T20 batsmen, Suresh Raina was a teenage prodigy, who made an impression in world cricket with his powerful game. An attacking left-hander, he was known for his big shots, and was the 12th Indian to make a Test century on debut. An IPL legend, Raina was a part of the Chennai Super Kings and also led Gujarat Lions. In 2020, Raina announced his retirement from international cricket. Though he is not a part of the league this year, he is still popularly known as Mr IPL and is the fourth highest run scorer in the history

of IPL. A family man, Raina is a hands-on father and now that he is not travelling for the game, he is making up for lost time by being with his children - daughter Gracia and son Rio! He says, “The life of a cricketer is so much fun yet so hectic. There have been days when I haven’t gotten a chance to meet my kids at all. So, every moment that I spend with them now is special. When my son Rio was born during the lockdown in 2020, he was the biggest source of happiness in our lives.” Hailing from Muradnagar in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, the NCR boy goes gaga over his love for Dilwalon ki Dilli and the Capital region. “I have been living in Delhi for the past few years and I love how this city has everything. I have so many memories in this city, especially when I had won my first Man of the Match in Faridabad and Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) was there with me," says Raina. The affable player loves travelling. “I have explored many places but Holland holds a special place in my heart as I have my second house in the country. There, I spend some quality time with my family. The time spent there has always been full of fun and good memories,” the player says. He adds, “I am fond of both mountains and beaches. Exploring new places always cheers me up. But as a parent, kids rule while opting for a holiday destination. I feel I need to be there for my kids, totally engaged and involved in their lives. METAVERSE INTO THE PARALLEL WORLD From weddings to fashion shows, metaverse is the latest tech platform everyone is experimenting with. Experts describe it as a digital world that exists parallel to the real world. We delve into the depths and diverse applications of this new-age technology. By G Anurag Rao

64

May 2022

In February 2022, a young couple from Tamil Nadu made news by becoming the first in India to get married on a metaverse platform. But they are not the only ones experimenting with this new technology. Many Indian brands and celebrities have joined the bandwagon. Recently, an Indian jewellery brand launched a new collection through a press conference on metaverse. A company called AjnaLens created a metaverse to virtually teleport their trainees to job sites. Popular Indian singer Daler Mehndi celebrated the Republic Day this year with a special performance on the metaverse. In March, the singer announced the purchase of real estate (which he has named Balle Balle Land) on an Indian metaverse platform, and this April, two Indians launched the world’s leading L1 Metaverse, Metapolis. It seems, metaverse has definitely arrived in India. 'Metaverse' has become the Internet's favourite buzzword of late and in spite of the overwhelming data deluge on the web, the concept of the metaverse continues to be a vaguely defined concept to many. To understand the basics of this technology, it is imperative to know its origin. The word was coined by noted American author Neal Stephenson in his 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash. The author has described the metaverse “as an all-encompassing digital world that exists parallel to the real world”. In simpler terms, the metaverse is a hyper-realistic shared virtual space where one can have interactive and personalised avatars and digital assets, and even make purchases with Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and Blockchain (best known for role in cryptocurrency systems). The metaverse, however, is in no way going to replace the physical world. But it looks to bridge the physical and digital,

thereby aiding in creating new and meaningful ways for people to interact, create and build new economies that can change the world. Today, the Metaverse isn't just a reality, it's the next step towards interacting with the Internet. During the dot-com boom in the 1990s, the Internet was just gaining popularity and every business wanted to be a part of it. What we saw then was rudimentary at best. Since then, we have moved from static websites and emails to instant messengers and interactive and information-based web technologies. These were called Web 1.0 and 2.0. What we now see with the metaverse is called Web 3.0 and we are yet again at the same cusp of explosion as we were back in the 1990s. The metaverse belongs to a whole new layer of web technologies and the primary focus of any Web 3.0 layer is that they are decentralised, private and secure. That’s the fundamental layer the metaverse technology is based on. But there’s more to it! IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES The metaverse was designed to be an immersive experience. The old clunky ways of interfacing through such tieddown devices as a desktop or a laptop are gone, thanks to Virtual Reality (VR). Now, you can experience a truly wireless, immersive experience as if you are at the location. FASHION ON THE METAVERSE Fashion is one of the front runners when it comes to the metaverse. Imagine designers being able to showcase their products and designs in an all-new immersive way while making transactions on the fly. Take, for example, the recently-held New York Fashion Week, where designers had

65

The metaverse is a hyper-realistic shared virtual space where one can have interactive and personalised avatars incorporated elements of the metaverse to the catwalk experience. Designers and brands could experience and make use of avatar-based virtual clothing or create brands that are native to the metaverse. There are so many ways to explore this space and it is just getting started. GAMING ON THE METAVERSE In recent times, gaming has become one of the biggest industries and as per reports, the gaming industry is set to hit a USD 260 billion revenue by 2025. Gaming on the metaverse isn't just immersive anymore, it enables players to socialise and interact with others on a global landscape while being able to earn through various P2E (Play to Earn) methods. For metaverse, gaming is going to be one of its biggest propellers towards going mainstream. EDUCATION ON THE METAVERSE Since the onset of COVID-19, education has taken a big hit globally. Students have been unable to visit their classrooms or interact the way they used to. Sure, video

66

conferencing apps have taken over since then but it isn’t nearly the same experience. The metaverse stands to change that. It enables immersive classrooms, helping teachers educate better. It also helps students to engage and socialise with their peers as if they are right there. There are also some technologies that enable and reward students for attending lectures, keeping them all the more motivated. THE ROAD FORWARD We are already seeing a big jump in the number of multinational brands that are getting involved with various metaverse projects. From fashion to banking – everyone wants a piece of it. All this, just to be ready when the metaverse does finally go mainstream. The race has only just begun. As more people start adapting and participating with the various metaverse ecosystems, we will see a meteoric rise from brands and businesses. HOW THE METAVERSE CAN EASE TRAVEL There’s no denying that the Internet has transformed the world in the past few decades. In the days before the mass usage of the World Wide Web, no one could have imagined the ease of information availability that we enjoy now. And with the gradual usage of metaverse, we are headed for a bigger change. Here’s how the metaverse could change the course of the travel industry in the forthcoming years. By Fossbytes

Take a peek, then decide Picking a travel destination can be challenging, but choosing the right place to stay and planning a detailed itinerary can be even more complex. This is where the metaverse can help. Imagine being able to inspect a hotel room like you’re physically at the location. Or, walking around a city and book marking the sites you would want to visit, before you actually arrive. That’s possible with the metaverse. It can also help in choosing flights and navigating through airports.

Historical Travel Metaverse can help you time-travel to enjoy a historic destination. The metaverse can be used to recreate simulations of landmarks and buildings and let travellers experience a particular time in the past. Industry experts say, metaverse can be used to virtually recreate an event or an era from the past and let people get a real-life and detailed experience of what it must have been like during that time. Once a reality, this will be time-travel at its best!

Making your dreams come true Often, we dream of travelling to a certain destination but can't due to geographical or security challenges. Metaverse can help traverse these problems. Summing up, the metaverse is indeed a very promising concept. Many big tech giants are already investing in the same and all eyes are on Meta (formerly: Facebook) as it is trying the most to invest in virtual reality and the metaverse. Facebook has said it will go from being a social media company to a metaverse company in the next five years or so!
